Flotilla holidays & yacht charters from Poros, Greece

Whatever type of sailing holiday or yacht charter you opt for, Poros is the ideal starting point. A quiet quay with local eating establishments, traditional fishermen as your neighbours, the occasional ferry and easy access to your chosen sailing area and Athens airport.

Spare yourself the nightmare of starting your sailing holiday from one of Athens’ noisy coastal ports such as Kalamaki or Lavrio. Enjoy the beginning and end of your sailing holiday by wandering the quayside restaurants & bars of Poros or shopping in the winding streets. You even save yourself the long beat back north to an Athens base against the Meltemi . In Poros, your sailing holiday starts the moment you step off the ferry.

Rod Heikell’s West Aegean pilot guide describes Poros by saying; “The approach to the town is one of the most attractive in Greece...” and goes on, “...it has something else other than the appearance of a little Greek Venice, it has a sensuality, a calm, and what can only be described as a conviviality...” . But Rod Heikell is not alone, Lawrence Durrell , described it as “the happiest place I have ever known” and in her “Greek Odyssey” television series, Joanna Lumley reveals how her love affair with Greece started with a chance visit to Poros; “It was just enchanting...the best holiday ever” . What better place to start and end your sailing holiday!

Whichever way you look at it, Poros is a great place to start and end your sailing holiday and well worth the extra hour of travel. Greek Sails are also the only yacht charter company in Poros, so if you are being offered a sailing holiday with a “Saronic fleet” and from a Poros base, it will be with us; there is no other yacht base here.

Sailing Holidays in Greece

Experience the magic of sailing in the Ionian Islands on your sailing holidays in Greece. The Ionian Sea, with its roots in Greek mythology and its border with Albania to the north, welcomes you to explore its fantastic beaches and picturesque ports and marinas.

The Ionian Islands, including Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos, create an ideal backdrop for your sailing adventure. This “other Greece” offers a unique charm, distinct from the Aegean islands, running parallel to the western Greek mainland coast.

For those who are seeking to charter a sailing yacht in Greece, the Ionian Sea is a true gem. With fairways shielded from strong winds and numerous secluded anchorages, some accessible only by yacht, it’s not just a haven for classic bareboat yacht charters but also a perfect destination for flotilla holidays. Whether you’re a novice, a family with children, or an experienced sailor, the Ionian Sea promises a memorable experience.

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Customer reviews.

We are frequent charterers and have sailed in the Med for the past 43 year. I have not only chartered but for many years ran the operations of a major charter company. I can safely say that it is not very often that one comes across a charter company as efficient and flexible as SEVEN Sailing .Spiros and his team were quite outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. Changes of charter dates, plans and island excursions were all handled swiftly and with courtesy. There is a lot to be said for using a company where the owners are hands on – something the mega charter companies lose with size. The boat was in excellent condition for age and we had no problems with her whatsoever. We have no hesitation in recommending Spiros and SEVEN Sailing.

Thank you for arranging a flotilla holiday that met all expectations and that will be fondly remembered. An efficient and personal service that resulted in a wonderful week of sailing in the Ionian. Good organisation and communication along with glorious conditions ensured our family flotilla experience was a big success. Our thanks to Spiros for arranging everything for us.

I would like to inform our satisfaction about the week we spended with catamaran odysseas. The boat was in excellent condtons and the places we visited very nice..Certainly we’ll back in this area supported by your organization

Thank you so much

Sailing Holidays in Greece: The Ultimate Guide

Photo of Vedant Darji

Greece is a sailor’s paradise with over 6000 islands and islets scattered across sailors ‘ seas. Whether you’re an experienced captain or just looking to try a sailing vacation for the first time, chartering a boat allows you to cruise between snow-white villages and historic sites at a pace dictated by winds and whims alone. From idyllic routes in the Ionian Islands to island-hopping Cyclades favorites like Santorini and Mykonos, we cover everything you need to know to plan your perfect luxury sailing holidays in Greece below.

When is the Best Time to Visit Greece for Sailing?

With relatively mild weather much of the year, Greece offers ample wind for avid sailors nearly year-round. But the ideal conditions for leisurely cruising between islands are mid-May and early October.

During these sunny Mediterranean months, daily temperatures range comfortably between mid-20Cs and 30Cs. Meltemi winds regularly whip up to 35 knots across the Aegean Sea, allowing you to harness the breeze without unpredictable storm risks at the peak of summer.

If you prefer cooler weather, late September to early October brings average highs in the mid-20s Celsius and fewer crowds. It makes for exceptionally comfortable open water sailing between many Greek Islands with minimal waves.

No matter when you visit, you can always count on bright blue skies to unfurl your sails under during sailing holidays in Greece!

Top Sailing Destinations in Greece

From history-filled islands in the Saronic Gulf perfect for newbie sailors to vibrant hotspots in the Cyclades, deciding where to drop anchor along GGreece’s15,000km coastline can be challenging.

To help inspire the route for your sailing getaway, we cover favorite sailing playgrounds across the Greek waters below.

Ionian Islands

With sheltered bays and light winds, the Ionian is ideal for beginner and relaxed sailors. Base yourself out of sleepy Paxos to drift between olive grove-dotted islands like Antipaxos, Meganisi, and Kalamos, where quaint fishing villages offer front-row seats to fiery sunsets over the sea.

More experienced sailors can island-hop between Kefalonia, Ithaca, and Lefkada – backdrops to HHomer’sOdyssey dotted with dozens of secluded coves ideal for crossing between or staying put for a night.

Cyclades Islands

As the quintessential Greek island-hopping destination, the picture-perfect Cyclades attract partying yachties and solitude-seeking sailors alike. Start from vibrant Mykonos before heading to palm-fringed beaches on Paros and Antiparos, where tavernas beckon you ashore.

Continue south through the islands of Amorgos, Ios, Sikinos, and Folegandros, where whitewashed villages spill down cliffsides to the sea before ending at SSantorini’svolcanic caldera glowing red under the setting sun. With opportunities to drop anchor at a new stunning harbor every night, sailing the Cyclades tops bucket lists for good reason.

Dodecanese Islands

From the iconic windmills of Mykonos to the fairytale-like towns of Rhodes, the nearby Dodecanese Islands offer both must-see Greek highlights alongside off-the-radar spots waiting to be discovered by sailors. Linosa, Agathonisi, and Patmos bring opportunities for pulls into quiet coves and sleepy fishing hamlets between better-known islands like Kos, Kalymnos, and Nisyros, dotted with hot springs and lava flows.

With harbor towns and uninhabited islets to explore, sailors can easily craft two-week adventures hopping across these southern Greek jewels by boat.

Saronic Gulf

Just a quick sail from Athens, the Saronic Gulf brings newbies ideal conditions close to civilization. Base from lavish Porto Heli and drift between Hydra, Spetses, and Poros – islands studded with neoclassical mansions and trendy beach clubs frequented by Athenian weekenders. With short distances between landfalls, you can easily sail during the day before enjoying vibrant island nightlife after dusk.

More off-the-beaten-path gems like Agistri and Angistri also allow opportunities to find hidden swimming coves and experience village life untainted by mainstream tourism crowds. With a bit of everything to experience, the Saronic Gulf is one of the most convenient, varied places for Greek island sailing escapes.

Length of Sailing Holidays in Greece

Most bareboat and crewed catamaran charter companies offer short weekend jaunts between 4 to 7 nights and options for longer adventures spanning 7 to 14 days. It allows you to explore the Greek Islands at a pace that best suits your style and schedule.

Newcomers to sailing holidays often opt for one-week charters, offering adequate time to relax into life at sea while island hopping between 2 to 4 destinations at a comfortable pace. It allows stops at a few highlight islands to swim offshore, sample authentic Greek cuisine dockside, and perhaps enjoy on-land activities like wine tours or hiking without rushed itineraries.

More experienced sailors often extend to 10-14 day trips to link top bucket list islands into figure 8 routes ending at your original starting point harbor. On 2 week sailing holidays in Greece, you can easily island-hop through main Cyclades hot spots and smaller Dodecanese Islands or circle Sicily-sized Crete, stopping at a new stunning village or beach every night.

Splitting longer charters across crew mates with on-off options also makes completing the ultimate island hopping adventures over 2 weeks more affordable by yachting.

No matter the length you choose for your sailing holidays in Greece, finding a route to satisfy every interest and seafaring skill level is easily achievable with endless anchors to drop across aquamarine bays!

Booking Your Sailing Holiday: Choosing a Charter Company & Boat

From sleek sailboats to expansive catamarans equipped with all the comforts of a luxury villa, selecting the ideal boat for your Greece sailing adventure tops the preparation list. Carefully compare offerings across charter companies when booking to get the features and space best suited for your group, budget, and style.

Most vessels accommodate between 4 and 12 passengers across convertible saloon sofas and cabin berths equipped with private ensuite heads and showers. Larger catamarans often feature multiple alfresco lounge spaces, shaded dining nooks, and even water toys from stand-up paddleboards to inflatable unicorns to take your island hopping up a notch!

When selecting your charter operator, look for professional Hellenic Yacht Charter Association members who exceed stringent requirements for quality, safety, and transparency. Before booking, please don’t be shy about asking questions about the age and upgrades of their vessels and inspecting onboard amenities to have smooth sailing all week.

Established sailing specialists like Niriides Yacht Charter receive rave reviews for their exceptional personalized service and armadas of modern yachts vetted to excel across the Ionian, Saronic Gulf, and Cyclades. They also offer route planning assistance and provisioning coordination so you can fully relax into the captain’s role once aboard.

Luxury outfitters like Black Tomato also curate exceptional bespoke catamaran escapes around the Greek Islands, with private chefs, watersports instruction, and guided land excursions. This lets anyone ease into sailing holidays in Greece without prior on-water experience but with ultimate comfort across your custom odyssey.

Provisioning Tips for Sailing Holidays in Greece

While sampling authentic Greek specialties ashore definitely ranks as a top highlight of sailing holidays in Greece, providing boats with supplies to whip up casual onboard fare is also part of the fun!

Most charter companies offer add-on provisioning packages or put clients directly in touch with Greece-based providers like Easy Yacht Provisioning. They expertly stock boats based on detailed order forms you fill out beforehand covering preferences across categories like:

Top 5 Routes for 10-Day Sailing Holidays in Greece

Ready to start mapping out an iconic island-hopping route for your sailing getaway? To inspire your trip planning, we cover dream-worthy 10-day ways awash in top bucket list sights and glittering hidden gems below. We don’t think you should blame us for this when these itineraries have you daydreaming of the Greek seas for months to come!

1. Athens to Ionian Islands Loop

Explore hotspots near Athens before sailing to the idyllic Ionian Sea on this 10-night route. After kicking off your sailing holidays from Greece’s vibrant capital, continue to the island quintet of Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Agistri, and the ancient ruins on Aegina in the Saronic Gulf. Next, set sail for the olive grove-dotted Ionian Islands like Paxos, Antipaxos, Meganisi, and finally Kefalonia – backdrops for an OOdysseus’adventures and home to dozens of pristine swimming coves. Wrap up by island hopping up the mainland on your return to Athens.

2. Cyclades 10-Day Highlights Hop

No sailing holidays in Greece would be complete without weaving together critical pearls of the Cyclades like Mykonos, Paros, and Santorini. This relaxed route through the heart of the Aegean allows you to tick off top bucket list islands while leaving time for open-water relaxation, swimming stops, and absorbing endless island sunsets.

Start by exploring Mykonos and nearby Delos before heading to the palm-lined beaches of Paros and Antiparos. Continue south through volcanic Naxos, making the iconic shot of the windmills a must before wrapping up with an ending worthy of the Greek gods soaking in SSantorini’scrimson sunsets over the sea from your private catamaran.

3. Crete and Surrounding Islands Loop

For ancient sites and culture immersion, sail clockwise around Crete – the most significant island dotted with palm-lined beaches, vineyards, and Minoan and Venetian rule relics. After picking up your catamaran in Heraklion, stop to explore the ruins of the Palace of Knossos before drifting south to the white sand of Elafonissi and Preveli Beaches tucked at the ends of crevices slicing inland.

Sail east along CCrete’s southern coast for rocky coves and rustic harbors before ferrying to exotic Chrisi – an uninhabited red sand bar offshore. Stop for a soak in the natural hot springs of Santorini and Nisyros after crossing the Sea of Crete back north or overnight under the glow of the sleeping volcano on Kos. With must-see landmarks and off-radar spots, Crete makes the ultimate island for your modern Odyssey by private yacht charter.

4. Dodecanese Islands Hopping Adventure

Sail between the iconic windmills of Mykonos and the fairy tale-esque towns of Rhodes on a cruise through the Dodecanese Islands. Start by exploring hidden caves and monasteries on Patmos in northeast Greece. Next, please go south through Kalymnos and its sponge-diving villages, followed by the volcanic thermal springs on Kos.

Continue west to Nisyros to glimpse smoking craters before angling back north through islands like Leros, Agathonisi, and Lipsi, dotted with fishing hamlets rarely seen by other travelers. Wrap up by exploring medieval walls and cobblestone laneways of Rhodes town – where the Colossus, an original Wonder of the Ancient World, once straddled its harbor in mythic times.

5. The Ionian Sea to the Cyclades

Begin your adventures sailing the sheltered bays of Kefalonia – rumored to be Odysseus kingdom in Homeric times – ringed by pastel villages and olive groves. Wind your way south through Ithaca, Meganisi, and finally, Lefkada, where white cliffs plunge into the shallow aquamarine offshore. Then, sail onward to explore the uninhabited beauties of Skorpios Island, once owned by Onassis.

Continue past Paxos and Antipaxos onto Corfu, soaking up Venetian influences in mansion-lined harbors before crossing towards Parianos. From here, thread between Paros and Antiparos to marvel at iconic Cycladic windmills and sugar cube architecture. Cap off your adventures by reveling in the MMykonos’ all-night party atmosphere to celebrate completing your modern epic, crossing the best of the Ionian Sea to the Aegean Sea by private yacht charter!

Wrapping Up Your Sailing Holidays in Greece

We hope this sailing guide has inspired you to set sail on your own Odyssey, exploring azure coves and snow-white villages scattered across the Greek seas. From one-week to two-week adventures, crossing these mythic waters by private catamaran or sailboat allows you to immerse yourself in island life at an unrushed pace dictated by winds alone.

With countless routes, Cruising shoulders with celebrities in the Saronic Gulf, dancing under the stars in Mykonos, or finding your hidden Ionian cove feels like a dream. But the most challenging part is deciding your ideal adventure to make those sailing holiday dreams a reality. Exploring famous and off-the-radar hidden gems and compiling the ultimate island-hopping route is half the fun of planning sailing holidays in Greece!

We just don’t think you should blame us for this when you get bitten by the sailing bug, and this fantastic European sailing destination will stay on your wander list for repeat adventures among glittering Greek Islands for years to come. We promise that gazing out over earthy olive groves backed by whitewashed villages fading into the distant sea never gets old from the captain’s seat of your private yacht!

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Explore the sun-baked cyclades islands with their dazzling whitewashed hilltop villages..

The Cyclades in the central Aegean Sea are the archetypal Greek islands, with charming whitewashed houses, windmills, churches with bright blue domes, ancient ruins and small tavernas with traditional food and wine.

On a yacht charter holiday you can visit Paros, Naxos and Mykonos, popular tourist islands with sandy beaches and a lively nightlife. Santorini (Thira) has one of the most spectacular landscapes in Greece as the island is the exposed rim of a submerged volcanic crater. As a contrast Kea, Skiathos, Kithnos, Serifos and Amorgos are much simpler with unspoilt small fishing harbours and protected anchorages - charming island to discover and still very genuine places to visit on your holiday.

This sailing holiday is great for more experienced sailors who want plenty of wind, longer passages and more challenging sailing itineraries. Distances between the islands in the Aegean are longer so you will spend much of the day sailing. Great sailing for serious sailors!

Suggested Sailing Itineraries

Suggested 1 week sailing itinerary from paros, day 1 : paroika.

Embark at Paroika, the main harbour on Paros.

DAY 2 : Folegrandos (30nm)

An enchanting little island in the Cyclades, with an authentic character and spectacular landscape. Th main harbour of Karavostasi is a traditional Greek fishing harbour.

DAY 3 : Santorini (21nm)

Santorini (also called Thira) was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world and what remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera. Moor in the new marina and visit the stunning town of Thira overlooking the volcano crater to enjoy the sunset and local wine.

DAY 4 : Ios (15nm)

A "party island" famed for its nightlife but the harbour front is not noisy - most of the action is in the town, a steep walk up the hill. Apart from fun, the island has many beautiful beaches and peaceful anchorages.

DAY 5 : Naxos(40m)

The largest of the Cyclades islands with many sandy beaches. Naxos Town is the capital and main harbour and has a lovely waterfront with elegant Venetian architecture.

DAY 6 : Naoussa, Paros (28nm)

Paros is one of the most popular islands with lovely sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, traditional villages with whitewashed houses in narrow paved alleys contrasted with the many colourful bougainvilleas. Naoussa is a lovely anchorage with a cosmopolitan town and plenty of tavernas.

DAY 7 : Paroika (6nm)

  • 3 Cabin Yachts
  • 4+ Cabin Yachts

Please note: Prices may be subject to change. Compulsory and Optional extras will be added to your quote.

A sailing holiday in the Cyclades will suit more experienced skippers as the passages between the islands can be exposed. In general the sailing conditions are more demanding than in other areas of Greece and involve longer passages.

The best times to sail in the Cyclades are May/June and September/October when you are less likely to be affected by the prevailing  meltemi  wind from the north which blows strongest in July and August at Force 5-6 and may reach Force 7-8. The  meltemi  can blow for 1 day or it can blow for 1 week continuously. In the Spring and Autumn the wind strength is less, around Force 3-4. Summer temperatures reach 25-27ºC.

There are many sailing itinerary options available in the Cyclades so you can plan your itinerary to best suit your sailing experience and the weather forecast. Your itinerary in this area must be flexible to cope with wind conditions, it is always a good idea to keep an extra day or so in hand to allow for adverse weather on the return leg.

We have rated this destination a 'Level 2-3'  (levels info)  and you will need an ICC qualification for bareboat charters in the Cyclades. You should be Coastal Skipper standard with plenty of skippering experience.

You can see all of the bases we offer in Greece along with the level ratings  here  so that you can find the most suitable destination for you. If you are at all unsure about a destination then please get in touch and our sales team will be more than happy to make their recommendations for you.
