Corsair Cruze 970

corsair trimaran vietnam

Since 1985 the Corsair 31 has been a familiar trimaran on the racing and cruising scene. At yards in Australia and California, 303 of that model were built, with subtle design tweaks over the years. This year, the Corsair Cruze 970 replaces the 31 — and it’s all for the better.

Longer amas, as well as bows that are more plumb and hull forms with less rocker, add 20 percent more buoyancy to this boat, while retaining similar beam dimensions. The result is a more stable platform. The keel and rudder for the original 31 had been optimized for boat speeds between 3 and 10 knots. Incorporating the lessons from those 300 boats, today’s 970 features much thinner, higher-aspect-ratio foils that are optimized for speeds in the teens and higher. (A note to those who haven’t sailed Corsairs before: Those boat speeds are real. Try it!)

Living spaces, both inside and out, are improved in the 970. Boat of the Year judge Mark Schrader was a dealer for Corsair years ago and raced the boats many miles. “They’ve added two very comfortable park benches in the cockpit,” he said of the 970. On the 31, he said, “there wasn’t really any place for more than four people to sit, stand or do anything without hugging each other.” The 31 was offered with either an aft cabin or an aft cockpit arrangement; the 970 deftly manages to make space for both, while also adding headroom in the cabin. Using careful building techniques, including vacuum bagging, Corsair has added more furniture in the cabin yet kept the weight the same.

corsair trimaran vietnam

As with other Corsairs, the amas of the 970 can be folded inboard for trailering. The well-refined mechanisms for doing so are the same as in the previous versions.

We sailed the 970 in light air. With the screacher up in 8 to 10 knots of breeze, we posted 6.6 knots just above 60 degrees apparent, then cracked off and made 7.6 knots. Steve Marsh, a Florida-based Corsair dealer, said you can sail 15 degrees closer to the wind with the blade jib. Propulsion on the boat we sailed is a Yamaha 9.9-horsepower outboard on the transom, with a steering arm affixed to the 970’s tiller and remote engine controls in the cockpit. The 970 offers no inboard option.

Several years ago Australia-based Seawind Yachts purchased the Corsair brand. These days both lines are built at a single factory in Vietnam. The construction quality is quite good — better than the California-built 31s, observed Schrader. The company offers a five-year warranty on the structure, as well as manufacturers’ warranties on installed hardware.

Schrader summed up the pleasures of this boat: “You can park it on the beach. You can run around on the trampolines. You can get into a foot and a half of water. It’s your platform to go park in some little lagoon somewhere.”

And yet, all that idyllic parking doesn’t account for even half the fun. Because in getting there, you’ll learn what boat speeds of 20-plus knots feel like.

The shipyard in Ho Chi Minh City is presenting a current successor to the successful F-27 series (450 boats built) and the Corsair 28 (300 boats built). The nine-meter-long hull format is particularly attractive for trimarans with flexible outriggers because, given the maximum size, the width can just be reduced to a roadworthy dimension of 2.50 meters. The new Corsair 880 is positioned as a current and exciting competitor to the also trailerable Dragonfly 28 from Denmark (test in YACHT 14/2009).

The main difference between the two brands: With the Corsair Marine trimarans, the side hulls are folded in via hinges in the beams, close to or even under the central hull - a system that has proven itself in the test of numerous Corsair models. With the Dragonflys, the swimmers are swiveled backwards parallel to the central fuselage using an equally sophisticated mechanism.

Compared to its predecessor and sister models, the Corsair 880 now comes with significantly more voluminous side hulls and bows in the wavepiercer style. The construction of Perus Yacht Design should provide more buoyancy for more stable sailing properties, at the same time the hulls will go better through the waves. The sword in the central fuselage can be completely raised, and the rudder system is only attached aft. This makes it possible to take the Corsair 880 straight to the beach. In addition, the trimaran lies as deep as possible on the trailer, which makes road transport easier and also makes it easier to get in and out via the ramp.

Corsair 880

With a width of just 2.5 meters and a weight of 1.6 tons, the Corsair 880 can be easily transported on the road

The Corsair 880 will be available in two versions. The standard boat comes with a rotating carbon fiber mast and a self-tacking jib, and a carbon fiber bowsprit is attached for a gennaker or Code Zero. In the simple version, the 880 will cost around 124,000 euros (according to the current exchange rate to the US dollar, including 19 percent VAT). The Sport variant provides for a rig (also made of carbon) that is almost two meters higher with significantly more sail area, and the boat is equipped with a briefly overlapping genu. And the bowsprit will also be longer, which allows the use of even larger and more powerful additional sails. The sporty version of the Corsair 880 is announced for a price of around 140,000 euros.

In the saloon, the table will be lowered and, together with the sofa on the port side, can be converted into a double bunk. Two people can also sleep in the foredeck, and another single berth is built in under the cockpit floor aft. A small kitchen module and a separate wet room ensure that it is suitable for touring.

holmi! Corsair 880

Apparently, the shipyard in Vietnam is already working on the prototype for the new Corsair 880. The first ship should then come to Europe in autumn 2019. The first presentation will take place in January 2020 at the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf.

The current situation at Corsair Marine

Covid-19 status in vietnam.

As of Aug 3, Vietnam’s Ministry of Health documented a total of 165.339 cases of COVID-19 and 100.293 cases in Ho Chi Minh City (where we are located) with an increase over 3,000 cases per day. However, 46.965 of the total patients have recovered and have been discharged from hospitals. Since 9 th of July, Ho Chi Minh city has been put under strict lockdown where all residents are to remain at home except when seeking medical care, working in essential industries, or purchasing essential goods. Nonessential gatherings are limited to two people, public transportation is suspended. Then the Government decided to extend the restriction from 18 July on 16 southern localities including Ho Chi Minh city and the Mekong Delta region under this strict social distancing measures for another two weeks.

As of today 3rd Aug 2021, 6,959,197  vaccine doses have been administered. Vietnam aims to secure 150 million doses of vaccines to immunize 75 percent of its population by the end of 2021. (ref: https://tiemchungcovid19.gov.vn/ – Government portal for Covid-19 vaccine information)

While Vietnam survived 2020 with very few COVID cases and fatalities, the last few months has seen the DELTA variant enter the country and spread rapidly through the community. With many of the worlds developed nations are now recovering from the COVID pandemic, a very slow vaccine rollout in Vietnam now has the nation reacting to the very issue that many of our friends abroad were faced with over the last 12 months. Recent tightening of intercity travel has forced us to close our gates to transiting visitors and staff. We have erected on site accommodations to accommodate 30% of our team who had volunteered to continue working on priority projects to ensure we stay ahead of customer orders and prevent delays where possible. The good news, is that by doing so we were able to focus on boats near completion and ship a further 3 Corsairs before further restrictions have required us to put a pause on production whilst the city is under full lockdown. Ho Chi Minh City People Committee has announced that the whole city will be 70% vaccinated before the end of the month. In doing so, we should be back to work with a partially vaccinated workforce, within the next few weeks.

corsair trimaran vietnam

In the past weeks, whilst operating under these conditions, three boats (Corsair 760, Corsair 880 and Corsair 970) were shipped to the US, both caught up right with  schedule and were able to meet their booked shipment thanks to the dedicated team who have volunteered to remain on site for the duration of this lockdown.

Supply Chain

We were fortunate to have been well stocked with materials prior to the outbreak in 2020, and swift procedural adjustments have enabled our team to continue to supply boats on time despite the supply teams workload expanding tenfold. This has us ordering much larger volumes of equipment far in advance of ideal requirements. An engine for example would currently need to be ordered 9 months prior installation in order to be installed on time without delay.

Whilst our stock levels and forward orders are carefully monitored and are well within required levels at this stage we are aware that any new part orders shall be delivered with longer lead times that we would typically expect to see. We are therefore asking all owners with boats under construction to finalise all options choices 6 months before start of construction to enable us to forward plan and ensure all goods are delivered on time so we can continue to deliver your boats on schedule .

Our Customer Service team is now all working remotely, remaining on call and are standing by to help with any inquiries or requests for support.

Thus for the 14th Seawind Pittwater Regatta, the company was able to present the 101st Seawind 1160 hull, and above all, the first to have been entirely built in Vietnam.   This relocation of the production has allowed the builder to drastically reduce its production costs and thus offer a more competitive sale price on the world market. The Seawind 1160 is now being offered at 413,537 US$ exc. taxes (ex-builder). In 2010, Seawind bought out Corsair Marine, to find a solution to the rapid rise in production costs, partly due to the strong value of the Australian dollar compared to the US dollar and the euro. Corsair Marine was itself obliged to leave the USA for Vietnam for the same reasons, 6 years ago now…

Rapido Trimarans

The Vision behind the Rapido

Rapido 60, Romanza, by Jaz Knowles.

Have you ever had a consuming passion for anything?

Co founder of Rapido Triamarans, Paul Koch, certainly does.

While trimarans may be a niche market, it is a market that he has essentially devoted his whole working life to developing.

Paul owned and operated OSTAC (Ocean Sailing Trimarans and Catamarans) Yachts from 1986 to 2008 and then the trimaran company, Corsair Marine from 1994 to 2010. Pioneer Paul , renowned for his passion and vision, has been credited with driving many innovations in the multihull industry – especially  in building production trimarans.

But Paul had always been convinced that there was a missing segment in the sailing market: an ocean-cruising trimaran that was owner-operated, powerful enough to accelerate out of any potential trouble – and could be safely crewed by two. Enter the concept for the  world’s fastest production cruising trimaran , the Rapido 60. Armed with the concept, Paul approached his friend, Pete Melvin, from world-acclaimed naval architects, Morrelli & Melvin Design and Engineering . Their brief was to develop the design and engineering for the Rapido 60.

The Mission

Rapido is committed “To build the world’s best ocean-cruising trimarans".

The Designers – Morrelli & Melvin

Romanza Morrelli Melvin Rapido 60

Rapido Trimarans believes  Morrelli & Melvin Design and Engineering is the best qualified and most professional multihull design/engineering company in the world (for a glimpse of the technology they use, click here ).

Morelli & Melvin don’t just sit in the design office. They actually sail and build boats.

Combined with their developmental work on cutting edge technology behind  America’s Cup  campaigns and other world famous projects, we believe they have the perfect balance of technical knowledge and hands-on experience.

Morrelli & Melvin also make use of the latest technology to develop the most efficient designs that include:

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Velocity Prediction Program (VPP)

To read more about this sophisticated technology, click here .

The Builder – Triac Composites

Triac Composites' logo

It was established in Vietnam in 2014 by Paul and co founder, Richard Eyre to build the Rapidos. Importantly, Triac would deliberately diversify its revenue stream by opening itself up to the marine industry more generally as well as non marine.

While Triac Composites are specialists in building sailing boats it is also true that we are specialists in working with composites, irrespective of the industry in which they are used.

Composites are especially well suited to the marine industry because they are light, super strong, non corrosive in salty environments and can be moulded into virtually any shape. These qualities are highly sought after throughout the marine sector more generally as well as other industries.

Accordingly, as Triac Composites’ production capability has increased (eg Kuka Robot , autoclave, CNC machine, labour etc), our order book has become quite varied and robust.

Examples of our composite work includes:

  • Composite plugs and molds
  • Composite superstructures for European ferries
  • Outsourced composite boats (commercial and leisure)
  • Mining equipment
  • Architectural facades
  • Train interiors

Triac Composites has an international management team and technical staff. We employ nearly 100 local staff – many of whom have been with Paul since he first opened a composites manufacturing plant in Vietnam back in 2006.

Holiday in Vietnam and visit factory

Prior to Covid-19, Vietnam had been enjoying stellar growth in its international tourism sector. In 2019, more than 18 million visitors travelled to Vietnam which set a new record.

HCMC, Vietnam, where Triac Composites is based.

In January 2020, Google named one of the towns in Vietnam (Danang) as 2020’s Top Trending Travel Destination .

What we are finding is that a number of our international clients would like to visit our factory in Ho Chi Minh City   (HCMC), Vietnam – and then go for a little holiday in this fantastic country.

Our modern factory (40 minutes from HCMC’s District 1), facilities, equipment and talented staff have impressed each of our visitors.

Visas for Vietnam Please note, many nationalities will need a visa to enter Vietnam which must be organised in advance. For further information, please visit the Government’s e visa portal .

 Rapido Catamarans' Founders

corsair trimaran vietnam

Paul Koch and James Sganzerla, arguably, have built more composite multihulls than any other boat builder in the world. We estimate that they have built more than 1,500 multihulls since 1986 when  Paul established OSTAC (Ocean Sailing Trimarans and Catamarans) in Australia.

Paul owned OSTAC until 2008 but it was when he took the reins of Corsair Marine in 1994 over in the USA that the production really started to pick up. Understanding the economics of building boats for an increasingly cost-conscious market, the two of them relocated Corsair Marine's entire business to Vietnam in 2006.

In 2010, they sold Corsair Marine to focus on the launch of Rapido Trimarans and Triac Composites in Vietnam. Rapido Trimarans would focus on a range of Trimarans, spearheaded by the Rapido 60 (see video below) . The hallmarks of the Rapido 60 was that she would be the world's fastest production cruising trimaran!

Triac Composites would be the builder of the trimarans - and Triac Composites would also source composite work from industries outside of marine.

Richard Eyre, a life long sailor, trimaran owner, lawyer and investment banker also played a founding role in the establishment of the company. Richard brought many years of corporate knowledge and good governance to this internationally owned and managed company.

Richard Eyre and Paul Koch.jpg

Co founders, Richard Eyre and Paul Koch.

 Rapido Catamarans' time

In 2019, the founders surveyed the boaties in the market.

Like others, these boaties are often time poor. They are unable to afford the luxury of being dependent on the vagaries of the wind to serve their needs. They need the certainty of guaranteed performance at the turn of a key. But that doesn't mean they are prepared to accept a fuel-guzzling boat with its environmental and financial costs. They want to enjoy the water and have that sense of satisfaction in harvesting energy efficiently.

And so, the idea of Rapido Catamarans was born.

Firstly, we continue to believe that multihulls offer numerous advantages over the multihull as per the Cats Vs Mono page on this website.

We also think that having spent three decades building wind-powered composite boats that sail across oceans, we know something about building boats that are lightweight yet structurally sound. These are key ingredients for achieving greater efficiency from the same engine (hydro, solar or conventional) without compromising safety.

But, we also need an efficient hull design...

The Designer

corsair trimaran vietnam

As a boat builder, we rely heavily on the designer to deliver a design that we                                                                            can breathe life into. And with  Albatross Marine Design  (AMD), we have                                                                                    found such a designer.

AMD is a Thailand-based design office, founded by Dr. Albert Nazarov in early 2006, that has grown rapidly and now provides services to clients globally.

With its extensive investment in the latest available design software and testing equipment it is, without doubt, one of the most advanced design offices in the world.

The scope of AMD's design services includes:

Design and styling

Interior design

Naval architecture

Engineering

Research and consultancy

Construction supervision

Trials and testing

AMD's achievements in the field of small craft design include the Gold Prize 2019 for the European Product Design Award for the F100 water taxi design. The f100 is a smaller version of Rapido Catamarans' RC12m .

About Corsair Marine

Corsair Marine International is a sailboat builder that specializes in trailerable trimarans.

Originally located in San Diego, California, the company was founded in 1984 by John Walton (son of Sam Walton, founder of the retail giant, Wal Mart) to build and market the Corsair F-27 trailerable trimaran designed by Ian Farrier. Over the next decade, new designs were added and the company expanded to offer a full range of folding trimarans from 24ft through to 37ft.

The popularity of these amazing designs continued to grow – both in the United States and beyond with Dealers appointed worldwide.

In 2006, the company relocated its headquarters and production facilities from San Diego, California to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Chosen for its central location, political stability, booming economy and large pool of talented labor, a number of key staff relocated to Vietnam from California to facilitate the migration of the business and the setting up and running of the factory.

In 2011 the brand was acquired by Australian company Seawind Group Holdings, Pty Ltd. Who also build the SEAWIND range of cruising catamarans. This is an ideal combination bringing the high tech construction techniques to the Seawind range of catamarans and the interior and cruising design capability to the Corsair range of trimarans, all built in the Ho Chi Minh factory. The merits of this blend of skills can now be seen in all the Corsair models but especially in the new Corsair 880 model.

Folding System

AWARD WINNING DESIGN

Corsair Trimarans have received acclaim and awards across the globe, and are the resounding choice of demanding sailors. That’s not just because they are fast: these are folding trimarans that deliver ease-of-use, but without sacrificing on performance – effortless performance. With a rich 30-year tradition as a world leader in high quality multihull manufacturing, Corsairs models have evolved and perfected the art of safety at high speed and appeal on every level. Suited to day sailing, family cruising, and racing, there are now more than 2500 Corsairs launched. We are pleased to present you with the current range of Corsair trimarans – from the 6-metre Pulse 600, to the legendary Corsair 37, and now the all-new Corsair 880, which represents the pinnacle of trimaran design…

FUN TO SAIL

Speed, acceleration, and manoeuvrability make Corsairs especially fun to sail. Perfectly balanced, the helm on a Corsair is always light and responsive – tacking is dingy-like and can even be done using only the sails, with the kick-up rudder out of the water. Continuous 360 degree turns are possible, helm hard over, without having to touch the sheets. On a reach, acceleration and speeds are exhilarating, especially when using the roller furling screechers.

ANYONE CAN OPERATE

Corsairs provide enjoyable family cruising. A priority of their design was to deliver maximum roominess in cabin and cockpit, with ease of handling and of course, safety – that effortless speed is a bonus! Boat speed often equals true wind velocity, and in a Corsair speeds of 15knots are common place and exceeding 20 knots is possible. This allows cruisers to bring many more destinations within range. Corsairs point as high as most monohulls, and tack easily with no tendency to get caught in irons. Lifting rudders, daggerboards, and tilting engines also means shallow harbours and drying moorings are easy to explore, further adding to your cruising possibilities. Corsairs are well-rounded and versatile.
