The house of the old Juan Díaz hacienda is a colonial work that has stood the test of time. Built on a hill top, overlooking the valley, streams and the sea horizon, its history goes back to the seventeenth century when the governor of the Province of Vene-zuela at the time, Captain Sancho de Alquiza, granted the Caraballeda lands for development in 1608. Granted to Juan Díaz, along with those of Hacienda Suárez (now occupied by El Palmar and Caribe developments), they were used for growing and produ-cing sugar cane, with Hacienda Díaz being one of the largest and most powerful in the eastern coastal region. At the foot of the mountain, overlooking the valley and the crops, the colonial house was built with a uniform and symmetrical rectangular layout, with a central courtyard surrounded by corridors that serve the inside spaces, decorated with period furniture. The high gabled roofs are built with wild cane and covered with clay tiles, while the rhythmic and orderly openings give meaning to the structure. In 1946, the Sosa Báez family, the last owners to work it as an agricultural farm, associated with Bernardo Siso and Carlos Heny to form Compañía Anónima Urbanización Caribe, whose urban plan was designed by Manuel Mujica Millán. The lands were later sold to Caraballeda Golf & Yacht Club Association, which transformed the former hacienda into the only golf, social and sports club of the central coast.

Caraballeda honra la historia del Golf en Venezuela

En el marco de la celebración de los 100 Años del inicio de la práctica de este deporte en Las Barrancas en 1917, destacamos uno de los clubes de golf que ilustran la vida del golf nacional, como lo es el Caraballeda Golf & Yatch Club, abierto en 1953

Caracas, Venezuela, 14 de Noviembre 2017 (www.revistafairway.com).- En el marco de la celebración de los 100 Años del inicio de la práctica del Golf en Venezuela, lo cual tuvo lugar en Las Barrancas en 1917 (Antímano), queremos traer al presenta algo de la historia de uno de los clubes de golf más emblemáticos del país, el Caraballeda Golf & Yatch Club , abierto al público en 1953 se distingue no sólo por la historia indígena y colonial que le antecede, significado y origen, sino por el rol que su ubicación y concepción le ha tocado desempeñar en su historia contemporánea, y su enfoque pionero en el turismo de golf nacional y en El Caribe.

Históricamente, el Caraballeda Golf & Yatch Club le ha servido a los habitantes de la capital del país, Caracas, como a los temporadistas que religiosa o periódicamente han pasado por el frente, pero también ha sido fuente de buenos caddies que luego se han convertido buenos profesores y/o jugadores. Se trata de una de las canchas pioneras del país, por ser uno de esos clubes iniciados por los que hicieron el Golf en Venezuela, dirigentes amantes del golf con una visión muy clara de las perspectivas de esta disciplina deportiva, no sólo en el área competitiva, sino en el aspecto turístico, porque estos mismos jugadores se intercambiaban sedes para competencias con Puerto Rico, Trinidad, trayendo señoras y familias enteras para el disfrute de golf y turismo.

Todo comenzó mucho antes, pero por el año 1946, cuando los señores Bernardo Siso y Carlos Heny, integrantes de la Directiva de la Urbanizadora “Caribe” con el propósito urbanístico de crear y promover clubes y centros sociales, concibieron la idea de fundar un club social destinado a fomentar el golf y el yacht club, para lo cual en 1947 convocaron a una reunión a un grupo de deportistas, casi todos jugadores de golf, y se nombró a un Comité Organizador, integrado por Luís Vaamonde Santana, John P. Phelps, Reinaldo Herrera Uslar, Alfredo A. Behrens, Eugenio A. Méndez y Casiano Vaamonde para todo lo referente al Club, el financiamiento de los terrenos, y la compra de la antigua casa de la Hacienda “Juan Díaz” para sede social, firmado el 17 de abril de 1948.

El 24 de agosto de 1951 se inició la construcción del campo de golf con planos levantados por el arquitecto paisajista John R. Van Kleek, así como encargado de la preparación y acondicionamiento necesario, conjuntamente con la Comisión designada que integraron los Sres. Samuel Knight, Carlos Siso Paván y Alfredo A. Behrens. Una vez abierto al público en 1953, comenzó a tener actividad con torneos internos, como Abiertos y Oficiales, y se otorgaron, entre otros trofeos, la Copa Siso, ofrecida por Don Bernardo Siso, como la Copa Fin de Año, donada por el Club. Posteriormente, tanto en el terremoto de 1967, como en el deslave de 1999, la cancha de golf sirvió de refugio temporal, cumpliendo con un rol social inesperado pero sumamente útil y estratégico para el rescate de los damnificados.

Sobre la casa colonial, según el bien recordado historiador de arte colonial don Carlos Manuel Möller, “… tales características pueden observarse en la casa de la hacienda Juan Díaz, posiblemente construida toda en una misma época, tal vez a fines del siglo XVII ,” por guardar “ en efecto, alguna relación arquitectónica en sus columnas [octagonales] con el palacio Arzobispal de Caracas ,” y más adelante completa, la casa “era una construcción sencilla, sin pretensiones decorativas, como todas las casa de hacienda de la época colonial; su encanto residía en la adaptación al paisaje, la armonía en la escala, en lo funcional de los ambientes y muy principalmente, lo que el crítico de arte John Ruskin llama, “ la honradez de los materiales .”

Hoy en día, el Caraballeda Golf & Yacht Club , afiliada a la Federación Venezolana de Golf (FVG), posee una cancha semi-privada, la cual no sólo sirve a la población de socios plenamente, sino que adicionalmente, recibe jugadores que visitan el litoral central durante las temporadas de vacaciones y/o fines de semana, así como ha recibido turistas que arriban al país vía aérea o vía acuática, por intermedio de cruceros del Caribe o turistas de pesca que gustan de combinar estas dos actividades, todos quienes han podido disfrutar de las escénicos hoyos de golf, como sus históricas instalaciones de la casa club, hoy un verdadero baluarte nacional, y un inmejorable instrumento para el fomento del turismo deportivo y del talento Olímpico en el Litoral Central.

La última novedad en el Caraballeda Golf & Yacht Club es su Escuela de Golf con cerca de 20 niños y niñas de la zona apoyado por la Fundación Caraballeda, luego de la visita del Programa PAR de la Federación Venezolana de Golf (FVG) en el 2015, ya que producto de este esfuerzo se les dio un formato de enseñanza a los profesores actuales liderados por el veterano César Pacheco, como se aprovechó para estimular aún más a los participantes con implementos más acordes a sus niveles de juego, así como se ha estado recuperando la cancha, particularmente con el fairway del Hoyo 1 y Hoyo 18, extrayendo las piedras, arando y mezclándola con tierra fértil, reactivando los sistemas de riego y preparando para sembrando grama nueva.

En el Caraballeda GY&C es uno de los clubes más importantes por su histórica trayectoria, donde hay más de 200 empleados que laboran allí y dependen de la Fundación Caraballeda, uno de los clubes de golf más antiguos del país, pilar del turismo regional, nacional y del Caribe, como parte importante en el desarrollo de nuevas promesas de golf en el Litoral para el logro de medallas en los Juegos Panamericanos 2015 y Olímpicas en RÍO 2016, donde muy bien nos representó el oriental Jhonattan VEGAS, héroe nacional de este deporte que viniendo de origen humilde es hoy uno de los más importantes atletas de esta disciplina a nivel mundial.
