First look: Ice 54, the new speedy cruiser/racer

  • Toby Hodges
  • May 31, 2021

Toby Hodges takes a look at the latest offering from Ice Yachts, the Ice 54, which the builders state will have the performance characteristics of a 60 footer.

ice yacht 54

This enticing picture shows the latest Ice Yachts project looking as cool as its name suggests. The Milan yard boasts its Ice Yachts Ice 54 has the space and pace of a 60-footer with the handling of a 50-footer.

The new cruiser-racer Ice 54 is inspired by the Ice 52 , ten of which have been built. Umberto Felci’s design uses a similar ‘scimitar-style’ bow and maintains the sharp family look but improves on living space, principally by increasing freeboard by 6cm.

Plenty of space is given to the cockpit seating and table area. The bathing platform both extends the cockpit and provides access to the tender garage, which can accommodate an inflated dinghy up to 2.8m.

A nice touch with the layout is the option to position the heads either forward or aft of the berth in the owner’s forward cabin. And the island in the galley provides a bracing point, plus extra stowage and worksurface area.

A carbon rig (available with taller mast option) sets 160m2 of upwind sail area. This, for a displacement under 13 tonnes, 5 tonnes of which is in the bulb, all points to keen performance. Multiple keel variations are offered including a lifting version, which can reduce draught to 2.3m.

Having visited the yard and sailed the 52 and 60, I can vouch that the sandwich composite hull and decks, vacuum-infused with epoxy, makes for stiff structures. Price ex VAT: €650,000. www.iceyachts.it

Minnesota’s Pat Heppert, who designed the C Skeeter cab-forward DRIFTER, has been in touch with Jansen during the project.

I admire David Janzen’s infectious enthusiasm and the extreme commitment to following an extreme dream and making it a reality. Truly impressive effort, and done on an average man’s budget. Follow your own path, and be your own hero. Can’t wait to see the smile on his face after that first sail that makes it all worthwhile. Pat

Vallicelli 80

The vessel in question is a Sailing Yacht, with a hull length of 23.80 meters with a fixed keel, rigged as a CUTTER. It is constructed in composite material and offers fast and comfortable navigation.

This yacht is the third example of this model designed by Vallicelli, built to ensure long and comfortable cruises with absolute safety and comfort, boasting high daily averages in distance, even with a reduced crew.

Like all boats made by CN YACHT 2000, now Ice Yachts, they stand out for their attention to detail. In fact, the yacht has been developed externally based on what we consider a fundamental requirement for the owner of a yacht of this size and class.

The aft cockpit is technical, dedicated to the vessel’s operation and fulfilling all vital functions for sailing or motoring, capable of accommodating four to five people.

Its deck salon makes life below light and airy, with light finishes allowing ample natural light to enter. It has a practical layout with space for six guests and a large crew accommodation aft.

The ICE 62 is an elegant luxury-sport-cruiser above 18 meters in length designed by Felci Studio and constructed in the ICE YACHTS shipyard in Salvirola.

The hull and deck in hybrid carbon and fiberglass are laminated on a female mold using an infusion method, while the carbon structural elements are laminated on installation and under vacuum. The yacht’s lines are by Umberto Felci, and are a development of his work on the Felci 61, a project designed to compete in the Mini Maxis, where they have enjoyed great success.

CEO of the yard Marco Malgara says that “The Ice 62 is an example of what we mean by a ‘grand luxe’ yacht – refined interiors combined with a personality suited to racing. If I had to describe her features, I’d mention her lines, her prestigious appeal, and her seaworthiness and performance, under sail and engine power. The Ice 62 is a special craft that can handle full canvas at wind speeds of up to 28 knots. We’ve verified this first hand!”

And sail area on the Ice 62 means 216 square metres of mainsail and genoa on a carbon mast. The same material is used for the boom and telescopic bowsprit. There is a lifting keel that allows the yacht to enter even extremely shallow waters, with a draught ranging from 4 metres to just 2.50 metres. The deck is clean and uncluttered, with a dual helm followed by a generous open space, the guest cockpit furnished with a table.

The interiors are centered on the large saloon – and here, the raised level of the floor and long side windows of the deckhouse provide passengers with a perfect view of the surrounding environment. The saloon, which offers a dining area to port and a sofa with a skipper table to starboard, provides access aft to two double cabins and ensuite bathrooms. Forward of the saloon lies a third skipper

cabin opposite the galley to starboard and then comes the owner’s suite with a double bed. Two couchettes in a V-layout for the crew complete the interiors for this four-cabin version.

The simple interior design of the first Ice 62 is enhanced by the use of attractive woods & leather in structures and finishes, as well as high-end equipment and fittings. “That’s why we’ve called this model a luxury-sport-cruiser,” Malgara concludes. “It’s a sporty boat that offers guests the interiors of a luxury yacht.”

The ICE Yacht shipyard is proud to present the ICE66rs. The first model in a series born from collaboration with the top names in the nautical industry: Farr Yacht design for the hull and naval architecture and Micheletti + Partners for the interior and exterior styling.

“Nothing less than the best” is the shipyard’s slogan for this new line: “We wanted to work with the best designers in the market to ensure a light, fast, competitive, and comfortable boat. The top in the market to bring the Made in Italy of the shipyard to an international level. This line is not meant to replace the existing production but will complement it, targeting an audience that appreciates the solidity and performance of ICE Yachts but seeks a more futuristic design.” These are the statements of ICE Yachts CEO Marco Malgara.

The boat, in its first version, will have a sandwich construction of glass carbon with a full carbon deck that combines the rigidity of carbon with the natural ability to absorb vibrations (and thus noise). A full carbon model is already in the works for speed enthusiasts. The mast, strictly made of carbon, will support a generous sail plan.

The keel blade, constructed with a double Weldox structure and the lead bulb milled with numerical control, will ensure the strength and robustness necessary to withstand the loads imposed by the large sail plan.

The carbon rudder with a forged autoclave 7 bar axis, designed with cutting-edge technology, allows for impressive control even in a heeled or subjected to high aerodynamic loads, always keeping safety in mind, both in design and construction.

“Finally, we have measured ourselves with a beautiful yacht for racing and fast cruising! After two years of full immersion in the sophistication of the America’s Cup and racing, we were able to dedicate ourselves to excellence in a ‘market’ project, for sailing and sea enthusiasts, for those who do not want to compromise on performance while making all-around use of their boat. Technologies and materials have made huge progress and allow us to create lightweight and extremely robust objects that provide comfort and silence, as well as durability. ICE’s SIX.SIX is a step-change for racing-cruising.”

The waterlines have been designed with the intention of taking the speed and seaworthiness qualities that the shipyard’s customers are used to, to a new level. The hull is derived from racing with a slightly reversed bow, as seen on the OR65 and has always been a hallmark of the shipyard. The maximum beam moved towards the stern, the powerful hull, and the significant righting moment allow this boat to aspire to compete with pure racers. The 3.35m draft has been judged the best compromise between performance and accessibility to the main Mediterranean ports.

The spacious garage, a record in its category and almost on par with that of an 80-foot yacht, is designed to accommodate a tender that is up to 3 meters in width, transversely!

ICE 52RS-54

ICE 54 is the new a fast cruiser dedicated to passionate and competent owners who seek enjoyment and strong emotions at the helm. It is built with highly innovative materials, and advanced construction techniques that belong in a league of their own in all that regards performance, comfort on board, and the ability to withstand even the most challenging conditions of the sea. The ICE 54 is excellent for demanding cruises and regattas. The design is inspired by the shapes of the model ICE 52, with the same qualities that made it a successful boat with over 10 examples sold, adding some changes to increase comfort and liveability both during navigation and at anchor. In fact, ICE 54 has a freeboard increased by 6 cm that allows the generation of a wide interior. Therefore, ICE 54 joins the ICE 52 production, enhancing the characteristics of comfort, luxury, and habitability. The slightly reverse bow and the large stern, trademarks of the shipyard, come from the regatta boat ICE 33.

Additionally, the hydrodynamics are nothing less than impressive. The water lines allow the ICE 54 to glide at very high speeds due to its max beam of 4.65m and the carefully studied appendages that grant the yacht excellent upwind capabilities. The ICE 54 shows no problem in taking on the wind coming from extremely narrow angles. The advanced technologies used in the construction process and the elevated skills of the artisans who have great experience and expertise in their field guarantee a high level of performance. This avantgarde project is realized in cooperation with Felci Yacht Design.

ICE 62-62 Targa

The ICE YACHTS boat-yard presents in the market the new ICE 62, an innovative fast cruiser dedicated to passionate and competent owners that seek enjoyment and strong emotions at the helm. Built with highly innovative materials and advanced construction techniques, the ICE 62 is in a league of it’s own in regards to performance, design, comfort onboard and ability to take on even the toughest conditions at sea. Excellent for demanding cruises and regattas. Derived from the powerful lines of the ICE 62 targa, with a mix of contents taken from our 60 ‘and 70’. The project has been realized by Felci Yacht Design and the production is done in the historic site of Yacht 2000, construction yard that has had over thirty years of experience and has completed more than 80 prestigious maxi-yachts. The hydrodynamics are nothing less than impressive. The water lines allow the ICE 62 to glide at very high speeds due to its max beam of 5.20 m and the carefully studied appendages also grant great upwind capabilities. The ICE 62 shows no problem in taking on wind coming from extremely narrow angles.

Great performances are guaranteed by the advanced technologies used in construction. These are the qualities that have allowed the famous shipyard to win the most important offshore races such as: ARC Atlantic Rally, Giraglia, L’Antigua, Sailing Week, 500x 2 and many others, however the ICE 62 also offers wonderful and relaxing family cruisers at the same time. Years of experience in advanced composite and offshore sailing led us to select the best materials and the most refined construction techniques. Ice Yachts are entirely manufactured in our facilities in order to ensure the highest quality. Everything, from the laying of the carbon skin to tightening the last bolt, is carefully checked by our experts. Hull and deck of the boat are laminated with a sandwich infusion technique using a glass-carbon fiber composite material, with an epoxy resin and PVC foam core with different density and thickness. The use of 3-step infusion process (infusion on the outer skin, vacuum bonded core, infusion on the inner skin) has been chosen because it allows to obtain an optimal control of the laminate.

The localized reinforcements are made with unidirectional and biaxial carbon fiber beams. The structures (bulkheads and floors) are either longitudinal, or traverse. Made of glass-carbon fiber with PVC foam cores at various densities, all entirely vacuum sandwich laminated in epoxy. The chainplates of shrouds, forestay and backstay are composite and steel made.

TECHNICAL DATA TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS

The boat weighs 19 tons, 25% less than the average boat in the same category. Has almost 220m2 of sail surface when going upwind and great stability thanks to the shape and the weigh/keel ratio. Hull and deck of the boat are laminated with a sandwich infusion technique using a glass-carbon fiber composite material and PVC foam core with different density and thickness, which has been chosen as it allows to sustain several strains.

The localized reinforcements are made with unidirectional and biaxial carbon fiber be ams. The structures (bulkheads and floors) are either longitudinal or traverse and are made of glass-carbon fiber with PVC foam cores at various densities all entirely vacuum sandwich laminated in epoxy. The chainplates of shrouds, forestay and backstay are composite and steel made.

Offered in two versions, the interiors are our interpretation of how the enjoyment of living on board and the italian style can be combined making it pleasurable to spend a long time off shore. AII the cabins are comfortable and refined, with the right ventilation and complete with large lockers to stow personal belongings. AII this executed in a clean and modern style with extensive use of solid wood. The design of the furniture and the orientation of the wood veneer provide a luxurious and refined interior but without loosing the typical offshore elements. The fin made of high-performance Weldox steel and the numerically controlled offer the advantage of reducing the weight of the ballast in percentage terms and therefore of decreasing the total displacement of the boat, with the same righting moment. Characteristic in both versions is the forward owner’s cabin, which is very spacious and has a wide shower that faces directly into the cabin.

The deck takes from the recent projects of Felci Yacht Design, combining simplicity and style with technology and efficiency. The steering wheel is in a forward position for an optimal view and the sails and direct control over the mainsheet even when the boat is leaned. The large area at stern is clear of equipment and can be fitted with cushions for extra comfort. The transom can be opened to offer a comfortable support for sea bathing and provides access to a large garage where it is possible to stow a 10,82 ft tender without deflating it. The cockpit is purposely oversize and it is characterized by large benches and backrests, plus the possibility of having a dining table.

The wide but discrete windows of the coachroof along with the large portholes provide unrivaled interior lighting, giving it a pleasant brightness. The low freeboards make the hull elegant and slender, the large windows on the sides, along with those coachroof provide a remarkable brightness to the interior, with point of view at different levels.

The boat deck is completely clean and it is equipped with electric roller-furler jib, fitted below the deck and fixed bowsprit with anchor and gennaker tack.

ICE 70-70RS

The gaze as soon as you get on board is lost from the cockpit towards the bow with large spaces and an order that give the boat an incredible exclusivity. Stylistically, the deck is characterized by a squared, flat and slender deckhouse, with large double-layer glass windows, from which the light that illuminates the entire “raised” living room diffuses. The large cockpit stems from a thorough ergonomic and functional study, deep enough to provide safety and equipment, rationally arranged to facilitate the crew and helmsman. The primary winches and the ones of the mainsail are set back and easily accessible. The mainsail halyard runs below deck back to the cockpit and can be operated remaining di- rectly at the wheel. The hydraulic rams that tunes the backstay are folded into the garage. The primary goal was to achieve a visual cleaning of the deck.

The opening stern gives access to the large garage, where you can stow the 3 meters sails and numerous objects needed on board; the stern platform, flush on the water, allows an easy descent to the sea. The aft gangway is hydraulic and retractable.

The wood veneers used in the furnishing of this first model is natural teak, the first message of how classic and nautical tradition can be combined with modernity. The inserts that cover the vertical elements and create a continuum in all living spaces are in natural leather. We chose to play with the shades of beige and white for the fabrics, with some nuances for the seats and sofas, thus diversifying the two living areas: that of the lighter living area, that of the TV, a darker gradation, to give to this place of relaxation greater intimacy.

Even the objects are cured, always in the classicism philosophy in a modern key. The half-hull model, as well as the design lamp from Flos are combined in harmony with a contemporary work.

The teak floor, with dark wengé staves, slides longitudinally from stern to bow, stylistically binding all environments. The aft area, organized with the captain’s cabin, communicating with the kitchen area, is completely independent in order to guarantee considerable privacy for the owner and his guests. The bow is a dedicated area to the master cabin, large and elegant with a master bathroom complete with shower and sauna all covered in teak and with a study where you can retreat in absolute tranquillity, and to the guest area consisting of a cabin with double bed and large wardrobes and a dedicated bathroom.

The cockpit benches are wide and made even more comfortable by the possibility of fixing water repellent cushions made “by design”, which can be removable and easily stowed in the garage, which also has two entrances from the cockpit.

In the cockpit, the general cleaning, the two aft lockers for the storage of the life rafts, the retractable toe rail, and the completely hidden recessed mainsail travel represent unique elements.

Always taking into account the mixed classic and hi-tech materials, the carbon rudder columns, and the new instruments pods, which are specifically designed and shaped in order to follow the guidelines of the deckhouse, allow to ergonomically locate all the electronic components that are now an integral part of every modern yacht.

It is interesting to consider all the machinery, such as the main engine, the bow, and stern thruster, the anchor and mooring winch, all the hydraulic rams, including the one that operates the lifting keel, and the full deck lighting system can be operated from the console.

Ice Yachts : how quality boats are built

Minimal Logo

Carbon fibre has played a key role in the technical evolution that yachting has undergone in recent years. This is well known by Ice Yachts, the Italian boatyard that has exploited carbon fibre as a key element in the construction of its hulls, decks and advanced structures. It is in fact a lightweight and resistant material that has led to revolutionary innovations in boat construction.

When analyzing the production techniques used for Ice Yachts’ products, the ‘ one-step ‘ lamination of the hull and deck, the in-situ lay-up and lamination of the structures, the internal lamination and closing of the structural rings during the joining of the hull and deck, and the use of home-made moulds or those commissioned from specialized companies stand out. These aspects are apparently very technical and specific, but it is important to know them in order to understand the quality that sets Ice Yachts’ units apart from the competition.

Ice Yachts’ secrets: ‘one-step’ lamination and in-situ construction

One of the main features of the ‘one-step’ lamination used by Ice Yachts is the possibility of fabricating both the hull and deck in a single vacuum step. This means that the carbon fibre layers and PVC cores are positioned and laminated simultaneously, reducing the risk of delamination and ensuring better adhesion between the two parts of the boat. This technique contributes to the overall strength of the boat . Moreover, the ‘one-step’ lamination process used by Ice Yachts greatly simplifies production and reduces construction time , enabling greater yard efficiency and shorter delivery times.

In-situ construction of structures is also an innovative technique in the production of carbon fibre hulls, decks and structures. This process, of which Ice Yachts was a forerunner, has revolutionized the way boats are built: unlike traditional off-site construction of structures, in-situ construction allows for greater precision and a perfect fit of the parts, offering surprisingly better results in terms of structural solidity, weight reduction and performance. These features are common to all Ice Yachts’ boats and enable the shipyard to guarantee the best possible quality standards.

hull

Union by internal lamination and closing of structural rings

Another key production step at Ice Yachts is the joining of hull and deck through internal lamination. This means that layers of carbon fibre are applied to the inside of the boat, creating an extremely solid structural connection between the two parts and allowing for greater continuity of the reinforcement structures, whose lamination continues from the hull to the deck, creating a structural ring that makes the entire boat stronger.

ice-yachts-hull

In-house and numerically controlled moulds

A central element in composite lamination is the manufacture of moulds. Ice Yachts tends to make its moulds in-house or, if greater precision is required, through companies specializing in numerical control. This approach, combined with 3D modelling carried out by in-house professionals, allows for greater customization , as the moulds can be adapted to the specific needs of the boat.

ice-yachts-52

The precision of numerical control makes it possible to create highly detailed moulds that fit perfectly to the desired shapes. This flexibility is crucial for the creation of high-end boats such as those of Ice Yachts, where design and performance are the priority.

shipyard

These techniques certainly help Ice Yachts in achieving its mission, which is to position itself as a world leader in the segment of custom and semi-custom yachts between 60 and 80 feet. To achieve this goal, Ice Yachts is currently working on the production of 9 boats: ICE 53 ST (hull no.1), ICE 66 RS (hulls no. 1 and 2), ICE 62 (hull no.7), ICE 54 (hulls no. 18 and 19), ICE 70 (hulls no. 5 and 6) and ICE 80 (hull no. 1). We are sure that, at this pace and with these innovative techniques, many more will follow.

ice yacht 54

The ICE YACHTS shipyard comes to the market with the new ICE 54, a fast cruiser dedicated to passionate and competent owners who seek strong emotions and fun at the helm, only possible through great build quality and the use of innovative materials. ICE 54 represents a new generation, a state-of-the-art yacht in which performance, on-board comfort and high seamanship coexist, excellent for both demanding cruising and participation in regattas and sailing competitions: the prototype of a perfect fast cruiser.

Ice 54 Brochure

The design of the ICE 54 is derived from the forms of the ICE 52 model, of which all the qualities that have made it a successful boat with more than 10 examples built are replicated, modifying some features to increase comfort and livability both under sail and at anchor. In fact, ICE 54 has an increased freeboard of 6 cm and an increased hull length of almost 2 feet, allowing it to generate very large interior volumes for a boat of its size. So ICE 54 complements the production of ICE 52 by enhancing its characteristics of comfort, luxury and interior habitability. Scimitar bow and smile stern, trademarks of the shipyard, are derived directly from the ICE 33 racer, launched by the shipyard in June 2014 and a true racer in all the regattas in which it participates.

ice yacht 54

On the hydrodynamic side, the water lines and appendages promise great performance, both at going upwind at tight angles and gliding very fast at carrying gaits thanks to a significant maximum beam of 4.65 meters and flat, powerful stern sections. The avant-garde design is created by Felci Yacht Design.

Ice 54 – Interior

The highlight of the ICE 54 is the spacious and comfortable interior offered to the customer, who has the choice of various layouts, lots of finishing materials and endless details. The large spaces in the forward master cabin make it possible to have a maxi bed, conveniently accessible from either side, just like at home. Special attention was also paid to the layout of the kitchen, which is innovative: equipped with a comfortable island that creates a pleasant feeling of continuity with the living area of the dinette.

ice yacht 54

Aft, the volumes allow for an extra-sized bathroom with a separate shower stall that serves the two twin guest cabins. Air conditioning is standard. Wide and bright lacquered surfaces revisit the typical concept of interior style by seeking, always in maximum functionality, that modern essentiality that makes them absolutely in step with the times. A kitchen with modern lines equipped with a home-style wall-mounted maxifridge and a state-of-the-art island, equipped with a dishwasher as standard, providing ample countertop space. A space with attention to detail and aesthetics that is not just a simple functional space but an environment with an important visual impact, for a domestic interpretation of the kitchen even in a boat.

The Porsche of sailboats, discover the world-first Ice 54

Milano Yachting Week

ice yacht 54

It is called the Ice 54 , is produced by the Italian shipyard Ice Yachts and is the evolution of one of the most successful boats in the “premium” sailing yacht segment in recent years, the ICE 52, of which it is the worthy heir.

ice yacht 54

As Marco Malgara, owner of the shipyard at the entrance to the Ice Yachts booth , tells in the interview, the new 54 is more “cool” and chic than the 52, with much more roominess in the aft guest cabins, greater height below deck, better sailing performance, especially upwind.

ice yacht 54

Listen to the interview and learn the technical secrets of this groundbreaking innovation.

The Ice 54 promises to be even before testing, thanks to the water lines of Felci Yachts ‘ designers, not only among the highest volume boats in its segment, but also one of the fastest. It is an evolution of the 52 hull that won races such as the Palermo – Monte Carlo and the Middle Sea Race! And on board it had air conditioner, electric winches, etc.

Ice Yachts, a success like Porsches

You will also discover, by visiting the booth , the other new models of Ice Yachts and, above all, the reasons that make it one of the successes of Italian yachting, immediately recognizable from others. Like Porsche’s automotive range: sporty, eye-catching but also comfortable, with a look that doesn’t go out of style. As are the Ice among sailboats.

And if you would like to elaborate with a site manager or book a visit through an email, in the booth you will find a one-click contact activation button.

Turbo multihulls: a new generation of performance cruiser

  • Sam Fortescue
  • May 12, 2022

A new breed of luxury fast multihulls are seducing wealthy sailors with a need for speed, Sam Fortescue reports on the rise and rise of this latest breed

ice yacht 54

“People sail for fun, and no one has yet convinced me that it’s more fun to go slow than it is to go fast,” said visionary multihull designer Dick Newick in the last century. “We all want high performance with comfort and low cost. Since the three cannot be combined in one vessel, priorities must be established and compromises made.”

Now, Newick may belong to another generation, but his observation is as true today as it has ever been. This time round, though, buyers have the money to park the cost issue. A new cohort of boatbuilders like Gunboat, HH and Kinetic are mining a rich (if narrow) seam of demand for high-end cats that go like rocketships and offer genuine comfort, if not outright luxury.

Gunboat is the trailblazer here. Launched in 2002, the now iconic brand weathered stormy waters before being taken over and moved to France by the Grand Large Yachting group (which also includes Outremer).

Its range has now stabilised at 68ft, 72ft and 80ft – much larger than it typically built in the past. But it has reached the size limit for this business model, according to managing partner Benoit Lebizay. “Beyond 80ft, you go into full custom,” he says.

HH Catamarans emerged 10 years later, building boats from 44ft to 88ft in Xiamen, China, with the same contractor that once used to build Gunboats. And Kinetic is more recent still, with construction in South Africa and design by the renowned Simonis Voogd.

ice yacht 54

Kinetic’s KC62 is built for speed, yet with ease and real comfort. Photo: Dale Staples

“When we started, we had to make a real threshold decision,” says Kinetic founder Bob Hayward. “Are we trying to make this a hull-flying lightship that’s a bit of a spartan cruiser, or are we really a fast performance cruiser that you race?”

Research among Gunboat skippers convinced him of the latter, because the market was commissioning boats with lots of bells and whistles. “Once you start putting the creature comforts on board, they come out heavier than the lightship aspiration,” he adds.

Kinetic has launched one 54-footer and a 62, with three more boats in the pipeline for delivery this year. “I definitely think this is a growing market, but not a mass market,” Hayward adds. “The more these boats get out there, and people see how accessible they can be, I think they’ll grow even further.” You only have to be overhauled once by a fast cat to understand the appeal.

Lebizay at Gunboat takes a similar view. “We remain niche players,” he says. “I’m not talking about building 20 boats per year – five or six is about as much as we can do. But the more we splash boats, the more we create momentum in the more experienced part of the fleet.”

Olivier Racoupeau has drawn more than his fair share of two-hulled boats over the years, but he says the market is changing. “We see a significant improvement in the number of requests for performance cats,” he tells me.

ice yacht 54

The Gunboat 68 is appealing and fast yet supremely comfortable. Photo: Michel Dupre

“In the past, they were looking for the volume and the lifestyle – more like performance cruisers. Now we see people coming to us to have much more fun sailing. They want to have daggerboards to improve the performance and are happy to keep the volume and the length of the hull reasonable.”

All about the kilos

Like every catamaran in this performance category, Gunboats are built in a high-quality carbon layup to maximise strength and stiffness while minimising weight. That means vacuum infusing prepreg materials for a precise and even distribution of the epoxy resin throughout the structure of the hull.

ice yacht 54

Looking into a little HH66 luxury. Photo: Billy Black

“We take technology from the racing end of sailing and from aircraft,” says Lebizay. “The furniture on board is in Nomex with veneer on top – the same design as the builder of the Falcon planes. It’s like a 5-star hotel room, but a fraction of the weight.”

The result is boats that will exceed wind speed in light airs and top out at 25 or 30-plus knots. If your yacht can manage 6 knots in a five-knot zephyr, it’s going to keep you sailing some 80% of the time, and long before a production cat has even removed the sail cover.

It’s a principle starkly illustrated by the all-carbon speed machine that is the Ice Cat 67. “In 5 knots of wind you can do 7 knots with the Code 0,” says Ice Yachts founder Marco Malgara with audible satisfaction. “And in 20 knots you can do 15-16 knots. It’s an amazing feeling.”

There are two 67s in the water and a new 72 is in build. Like most of these performance cats, Ice’s boats use lifting daggerboards to provide lateral stability and better windward ability – the 67 can manage 35° true wind angle. It takes the draught from a go-anywhere 95cm down to a hardcore 3m.

ice yacht 54

Ice Yachts has form with its 67, but this new 72 in build is a much bolder, more contemporary and powerful design with a stunning interior

“It’s a fully automated system and you have a joystick so you can control it wherever you are,” says Malgara.

Kinetic cats have Antal line drivers to hoist and lower centreplates, which pivot aft into the hulls. There’s also an option for faster daggerboards and even curved C-boards. Just like the furling boom and self-tacking jib, the key to this system is simplicity for short-handed sailing .

It’s true of the HH cats, too, with their captive winches, hydraulics and smart deck planning. “I can be off the mooring, sails up and doing 20 knots within four minutes,” says highly experienced HH commissioning manager Chris Bailet of the HH66 .

Although you won’t necessarily find it in the handbook, some of these boats allow you to fly a hull for a real buzz if you feel so inclined. “I love the challenge of keeping the boat with the windward hull flying,” says serial boat-owner Irvine Laidlaw of his Gunboat 68 , Highland Fling 17 .

ice yacht 54

Beating Comanche? Tosca’s owner enjoying a bucket list moment at the Transatlantic start. Photo: PKC Media/Tosca

It’s a feature that veteran ocean racer Alex Thomson was more reluctant to employ during his recent RORC Transatlantic Race on the Gunboat 68 Tosca . They aimed for a heel angle of 10-13°, no more, and used the UpsideUp warning system to see when they had to ease the sheets.

“Occasionally there was air under the hull, but that wasn’t the objective for us,” says Thomson.

HH catamarans are also equipped with UpsideUp, and it’s one of the first systems that owners are taught to use. “We can have the mainsheets on a release based on the angle of heel, pitch and cap shroud loads,” says Bailet. “Anything on a hydraulic, like the mainsheet, or captive reels like a staysail, can ease. The lines on the winches are not eased on the system, however. You’ve got to have at least a little bit of awareness.”

More than the speed

Of all these brands, Kinetic is probably the closest to the cruising end of the spectrum. Its cats have a coachroof-stepped mast, for instance. “That requires extra infrastructure and with it some weight, but it buys us a bigger salon and a forward cockpit that doubles as a leisure zone,” says Hayward. “We did things like the drop-down swim platform – that costs us 80kg in weight.”

Technology can mitigate to some extent. So, the large 360° windows on the KC62 are glazed with chemically-strengthened glass. This provides better protection than standard glass, but measures 10mm thickness instead of 16mm. “That saves us around 200kg,” adds Hayward.

Comfortable double cabins with plenty of clothes stowage and en-suite shower rooms are standard features on all these boats, as are saloons lined with lavish upholstery and peppered with designer tables and stools for comfy lounging. In terms of the finish, expect lots of bare hull with a smattering of fine veneer cabinetry, plenty of glass and the latest appliances.

ice yacht 54

HH88 in build has an enclosed flybridge. HH is in talks with another client about a custom 115

Where the boats differ is in the details. The Kinetic 54 has helm stations on each quarter, and another one inside, plus a cosy forward cockpit with access from the saloon. “Once you’ve had a forward cockpit, you’ll never go back,” enthuses KC54 owner Randy Smith. “We’re constantly walking through it for mooring and anchoring, and it lets the wind blow through more than any porthole could.”

The Ice Cat 72 is big enough to have dedicated crew quarters with its own access, and you can decide whether you want a well-specced galley in the saloon, or down in a hull. It can be totally customised, but the feel is everything you’d associate with luxury Italian design.

“We aim to unhinge the traditional concept that associates the boat with a sea lifestyle,” comments design partner Lucio Micheletti.

ice yacht 54

With its internal helm station, the Gunboat 68 frees up a lot of aft real estate for sophisticated lounging. There’s space for up to six cabins, including a big master, and a forward cockpit. The 80 offers more of everything, while the new 72V is something of a gamble for the brand – a fast boat which has a flybridge. It’s streamlined compared to production cats, but there’s room enough up top for a bank of flexible sofa/sunbeds, a low table and a flybridge helm station.

Flexible platform

Meanwhile, HH prefers twin bulkhead helming positions on its standard HH66 layout, although its customisation programme runs to other options. The fifth hull in the series has MOD70 -style steering from a bucket seat out on the starboard quarter, with a wheel in the saloon for protected helming. Either way, there’s a forward working cockpit for handling lines.

ice yacht 54

With low volumes and high prices, serious customisation is the name of the game. Fastidious attention to boat weight means that clients’ choices can be fully costed out in terms of speed. “Each yacht is unique and offers the ability to shift the pendulum toward comfort or performance,” says Seth Hynes, president at HH. “The larger you go, the more you can achieve both.”

To illustrate the point, there is an HH60 currently being built with hydraulic J-boards and a rotating carbon mast. In a neighbouring bay is the first HH88 , which will have an enclosed flybridge with a hot-tub that can be drained into a tank positioned low down in the boat.

ice yacht 54

Meanwhile, Gunboat is embarking on the build of a fully pre-preg 80 for Irvine Laidlaw, pushing performance even further. “The 68 is an excellent boat, but it is not a full-on racer,” says Laidlow. “Cruisers do not understand the massive difference between a racer and cruiser, with tremendous emphasis on weight and performance. I have zero interest in dishwashers, hydraulic bathing platforms and flat screen TVs.”

It’s a tricky balance to walk for Gunboat, which does not see itself as a pure racing brand. But it is proving a useful challenge. “The more sophisticated the client, the more demanding they are, pushing us into exploring new avenues,” says Lebizay.

ice yacht 54

Gunboat and Kinetic favour forward cockpit for views and ventilation.

“On 80-1, the brief is to be able to lift the centreboards at 20 knots boat speed. They have at least 5m in the water, and the side force is in tens of tonnes. It tells you what kind of system we need to develop.”

Who is buying these boats?

If technology is one of the drivers behind the performance cat scene, so is money – lots of it. A Gunboat 80 or an HH88 will set you back north of $10m, so it is not a proposition for your average yachtie looking for a bit more of a thrill.

Buyers are often seasoned racers, according to Lebizay at Gunboat. “Most of these guys have had maxi programmes or other racing programmes. One of our owners was the owner of a SailGP team; another one has a GC32 team and another, a Volvo 70 programme.”

They’re looking for the benefits of the boats’ comfort without sacrificing much speed. Irvine Laidlaw, now 79 years old, sums up his move from monohulls succinctly: “I felt that, getting older, that moving around in a large racing monohull was getting too difficult. I helm but like to take 10 minutes off in every hour to keep me fresh.”

ice yacht 54

The first of the new HH60s is for a colourful Frenchman

Then there are owners like Randy Smith, who experienced the frustration of production catamarans, while loving the comfort. “In less than 10 knots of wind, or closer than 70°, we couldn’t sail. We had a big, comfortable cruising boat, but it was no good for sailing. That’s what started this search. We wanted centreboards and better sail area, but we didn’t care if it was made out of carbon.”

Buyers of the sub-60ft catamarans generally want the privacy that an owner-operator setup can provide. “These are guys that have the money to do bigger boats, but they don’t want anyone else on board,” says Bailet at HH. They range from sports stars to successful business leaders, but they all have something in common, he says: “There’s no compromise. They’re not going to get a slow boat. Most of those guys [opt for] a forward cockpit, with the wind in your hair like driving a Nacra 18, having a rip.”
