I have a NY consultation client with limited sailing experience looking at a used Brenta 38. I have done some research and it looks like a good boat for him to use as a daysailer. He can sail it under main alone until he gets comfy with the the big rig. It has in boom furling so reefing should be easy. Sail controls are push button automated. I have concerns with the winch system and how reliable it is, primarily the main halyard. I also have concerns about the stability of the boat and the comfort of the cockpit. His crew will be his two young daughters. It's a very cool looking boat that should have performance he can grow into. But, I do not want to suggest he buy a boat that will intimidate him immediately. He's a very smart guy, very willing to take a J World or Colgate racing course and is attracted to high performance. His current boat is a Doughdish. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

The boat is beautiful. I have friends that have sailed on one. I'll get them to comment.

After seeing the way the one that was at Manhasset Bay Fall Series was sailed, It might be foresail or at least it should be. I'm with barepoles get a laser

  • Thread starter

Suggesting a Laser does me no good. Taking your two daughters out for a sail on Laser is not my style and I would not suggest it to my client. He already has a small boat and wants to move up. He is willing to tke some sailing lessons to help get up to speed but he is intent on something on the exotic side and he likes the idea of a comfy daysailer. I have suggested Hinkley, Morris, Sabre and Alerion but he is drawn to the Brenta. He likes exotic cars. He knows he will be overpowered much of the time but he can sail with main alone or even a reefed main until he builds up his confidence. I'm looking for an alternative to the Brenta. I'm looking for hard reasons he should avoid the Brenta. I'm open to alternatives that would give him the sense of an exotic, performance oriented boat that can be sailed short handed. Maybe the Alerion is the sensible solution. Problem is he is not into sensible solutions. Yet. Espo: I suspect that is the Brenta for sale.

Not that I am a big J-boat fan but the new j95 sounds like a fit or even the j100. Crosscurrent33 , Esse 850 with the teak deck gives it a slick look. 38ft is a big step up.

austin1972

My dig on the Brenta is that it's pretty big for him, and what happens when all the fancy electronic stuff fails with his daughters on board? A Seacart would be cooler.

SemiSalt

Bob, you know as well as anyone that we humans often take a liking to something for no apparent or rational reason, and once we do, we are resistant to dropping it. If the man has decided that he wants the Brenta, chances are that's what he is going to end up with. Just to be argumentative, I was thinking about narrow boats the other day, and hence the JS9000/Admiralty 30. Especially, I was noting how all mention seems to have dropped off SA, and pondering whether it just wasn't a real good boat, or it was too specialized, or whether a good idea was ruined by the legal (and illegal) issues that came to surround it. I sort of suspect that the very narrow boat is reinvented every few decades. There was one called the "Monomaran" from somewhere in New England in the 1960's. Anyway, it might fit the letter of intent here, but more likely you will add it to your list of "considered and rejected."

If the Doughdish has left him with a taste for Herreshoff, you might look up a Buzzards Bay 25.

someoldsalt

Sounds like a guy the Brenta would be perfect for-the boats sort of are what they I believe (I have not sailed one but know people who have), super sexy, easy to sail with complex systems. I would think that if the guy had a good and capable BN/Captain, that it might be an ideal choice for someone who can afford Italiano style and is willing to learn-but there are lots of systems that need to work perfectly if he is going to enjoy his new toy. Come to think of it, depending on where the boat will live and the wages involved...

I saw the boat at Stamford Danish race. With the square topped main, even in light air (less than 9 apparent all race) it was still healed. One concern would be could a single individual even hoist, let alone reef, the main in windy conditions and tend to kids also? In addition as it has an open transom, too much sail area in that main and handling that appeared to be similar for a high performance dingy, another concern would be that if something goes wrong, it could accelerate out of control quickly, especially with small children. How about something like the 36 foot Sabre Spirit daysailor. It looks great, appears to be fairly fast ( PHRF around 90) and has some amenities, like an enclosed head, which based upon feedback from some non-sailing wives seems to rank high on their list of requirements? Bob K

I have sailed the Esse 850. It is a great sailing sexy italian daysailor that you should take a hard look at. Umberto Felci is a great designer and I think he may even have a bigger Esse in the works if the 850 is too small.

I checked and he already has a esse 990 in production and there is one for sale in annapolis on yachtworld. Very cool boat. http://uk.yachtworld.com/core/listing/boat...=75331&url=

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

an old photo of a small boat being launched into the water with a crane

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

two men, one on a mobility scooter, are on a boardwalk with water and a small boat behind them

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

a picture of a scrap book with photos of a boat and cursive writing

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

a black and white photo of a little boat in sail on a river

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."
