Not your traditional blue blazer club, EYC is built on activity, on the water and ashore. Our members are involved in a diverse range of boating activities, supported by social events and strong camaraderie. Known for our million-dollar view of the Severn River and Annapolis, EYC also is recognized in the Chesapeake Bay region and beyond as a club capable of managing major championship regattas, Friday night Beer Can races, and everything in between, as well as providing great social networking for cruising, parties, and charity events. It’s all about life on the water, and all about fun.

EASTPORT YACHT CLUB  BECOMES NSHOF FOUNDING MEMBER

During the year 2009, the membership of the Eastport Yacht Club will celebrate the twenty-ninth anniversary of its birth. Although the idea of an Eastport Yacht Club had been discussed since at least the early 1970’s, the actual organization was the result of the informal Friday night social gatherings at the offices of Kaufman & Ladd, Naval Architects on Severn Avenue in the Eastport section of Annapolis, Maryland, U.S.A. During the spring of 1980, eleven of the regulars at these gatherings formed a steering committee with the intention of forming the Eastport Yacht Club.

This steering committee consisting of Robert L. Allen, Eugene Ambo, Thomas Bell-Wright, John Crummey, T. Ross Glover, Jeffrey S. Goldring, Frederick Hecklinger, F. Michael Kaufman, Glenn D. Klakring, Robert A. Ladd, And Ivon Paulin met weekly at the offices of Kaufman & Ladd under the chairmanship of Mike Kaufman to go through the formal process of creating the yacht club.

By October, two hundred persons had been selected who were considered as appropriate for the charter membership and invitations were sent out. No restrictions concerning race, creed, or sex were considered in the selection of these charter members. The number of invitations was limited by the number of persons who perhaps could fit into the upstairs of Marmaduke’s Pub where the first meeting of the charter members convened on October 13, 1980.

The idea of the club was received with true enthusiasm. It was determined by vote that a permanent clubhouse was to be sought after, although there were some persons who, understandably, suggested caution because of the cost of such a venture. The burgee that had been created by the steering committee was accepted.

The burgee pattern was intended to represent the Eastport Bridge in an open position. While continuing to seek a permanent clubhouse, the EYC found temporary quarters on the fourth floor of a building at Annapolis City Marina on Severn Avenue in Eastport that opened on November 6, 1983.

The search for a suitable property continued and on April 23, 1989 the membership approved the purchase of the present site, and after much creative financing, the new clubhouse was opened for use on October 3, 1992. An additional section adjoining the present site was acquired during June, 1999 and in 2004 arrangements were made to acquire the Paape property which is next beyond that towards Severn Avenue. During the spring of 2006, the program of expanding and rebuilding the marina was completed. Various committees are active at planning the continuing development of our expanding properties.

All members are encouraged to volunteer and serve on committees so that EYC will continue to develop by the membership and for membership. The Eastport Yacht Club has accomplished a great deal since its creation twenty-nine years ago and is now responsible for many events, many of which are noted in the letter from our Commodore. During 2004, the membership voted to increase the voting membership from 500 to 600. Eastport Yacht Club has become a vital part of our community while continuing to be a fun place to be.

General Information

The idea of EYC was sparked in the 1970’s and informed by Friday night social gatherings. By spring of 1980, a steering committee was formed with the goal of actually establishing the yacht club.

Located at Sycamore Point in Eastport, EYC is across the Severn River from the Naval Academy and overlooks the Annapolis skyline and Bay Bridge. EYC currently allows 660 memberships and requires written endorsement from two members: a sponsor and endorser.

Eastport Yacht Club Becomes “Home Yacht Club” of Pride of Baltimore II in New Partnership

eastport yacht club logo

It’s a partnership that’s never been done before. The Pride of Baltimore II , a tall ship ambassador for Chesapeake Bay history that travels far and wide, will now fly the Eastport Yacht Club’s (EYC) burgee. And the two organizations are planning future education programs together.

The Annapolis club has just become the first “home yacht club” of Pride II . On Friday, EYC hosted the privateer for Maryland Day festivities and a legislative reception at the club (complete with cannon salutes). The two swapped an EYC burgee (which measures at least 5′ by 8′, but looks relatively small up the ship’s mast) for a Pride II pennant, which now hangs in a place of honor over the club’s bar.

eastport yacht club logo

EYC Commodore Mark Jones tells Bay Bulletin that during planning for the legislative reception, he’d asked Pride of Baltimore Chair President and CEO Jayson Williams whether the ship had a home yacht club. “Well, no,” he’d responded. “We hadn’t really thought about it.”

That led to a two-hour conversation in which the two realized a partnership held a lot of potential. The yacht club, which prides itself on being built by watermen and maritime workers rather than aristocrats, advocates for marine trades jobs and educational experiences for kids in Annapolis. Pride of Baltimore Inc. does the same thing in Charm City.

eastport yacht club logo

In a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two groups laid out goals that are aspirational rather than contractual. The goals include partnering in education, STEM, and maritime careers. Pride of Baltimore has committed to sponsor one of EYC Foundation’s maritime scholarships. For its part, the yacht club will support Pride’s Spring Sailabration on April 28, donating yacht club experiences for the Commissioning Week Blue Angels air show and 4th of July fireworks.

The Pride II will compete in the EYC-hosted Annapolis to Bermuda race June 3 before heading out on their Great Lakes tour. See the ship’s 2022 schedule here . As an honorary EYC member, Pride II Captain Jan Miles can take advantage of reciprocity with various yacht clubs outside a 50-mile radius when the ship comes into other ports.

Annapolis Holiday Tradition Shines Bright with Eastport Yacht Club’s Christmas Lights Parade

Club News , Featured News , Station News ,

eastport yacht club logo

In what has become a signature event of the Annapolis Holiday Season, the Eastport Yacht Club's Christmas Lights Parade illuminated the waters with a spectacular display of festively adorned boats. This annual extravaganza, a testament to community spirit, featured 51 boats bedecked in holiday lights and decorations.

The tradition began with a couple residing on a boat docked in Spa Creek, at the heart of Annapolis on the Eastport side. Transforming their boat into a festive spectacle, they invited friends for a harbor cruise complete with Christmas carols. As the years passed, more boats joined the festive procession, leading to the formation of the Eastport Yacht Club. Over time, the event evolved into an official club function, complete with a spirited competition among members for the most creatively decorated boat.

The City of Annapolis embraced the Christmas Lights Parade, making it an integral part of the holiday festivities. The event has since grown in scale and popularity, attracting participants and spectators alike.

Notably, the driving force behind the Christmas Lights Parade is a couple who has dedicated over 25 years to its organization – Tom and Trudy Stalder, now proud members of the Storm Trysail Club (STC). Their commitment extends beyond the parade itself, involving year-round efforts in securing sponsors, collaborating with charities, and coordinating with various government agencies, including the Department of Natural Resources and the Coast Guard.

The logistical challenges are numerous, from ensuring the safety of participants to coordinating the opening of the drawbridge across Spa Creek for prime viewing. Steering boats with limited visibility amidst a sea of twinkling lights presents its own set of challenges, making the effort a year-round labor of love for the Stalders.

Jeff Goldring, Chesapeake Station Captain of the Storm Trysail Club, expressed great pride and pleasure in welcoming Tom and Trudy Stalder as members of STC. The connection between the sailing community and the Christmas Lights Parade highlights the vibrant and diverse interests of its members.

As a poignant footnote, Goldring shared a personal connection to boat parades, revealing that his wife Carol's father, Fran Schuster, played a pivotal role in initiating the boat parade in Ft. Lauderdale in 1965. Much like the Annapolis tradition, the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Parade has evolved into a massive spectacle featuring predominantly commercially sponsored and professionally decorated yachts, reflecting the enduring appeal of these luminous celebrations on the water.

Hey everyone I’m Katy Nastro this is the Beat, the only sailing webseries taking you on, offshore and well wherever the wind may take us. This episode of the Beat will warm your heart as we highlight the Chesapeake region accessible boating program or known to many as CRAB. CRAB’s mission is to help physically and developmentally disabled individuals get out on the water and enjoy sailing at any age. So come along with us through historic Annapolis and enjoy CRAB. So tell us a little bit about CRAB. It’s a local organization Chesapeake Bay and the whole purpose is to get sailors who normally would not be able to get on the water themselves. Out on boats that suit their needs and it’s it’s great we have four boats that have been competing for years in here and anybody who thinks these guys aren’t competitive is mistaken and they need to come out and race against them. it’s it’s a great event. it’s a great way to do something with my limitations and I can do just fine, I’ll sail and I’m competitive and it’s real fun for this for this they have a tiller extension which allows me to do full range of everything to do this is the freedom to get out and on the water and I can do it. Katy you picked the best weekend to be here we have the boatyard bar & grill regatta to benefit crab which is an excellent pursuit start race we got able-bodied and disabled sailors racing against each other on the same same race course it’s awesome and we have some really little kids out there and right up to guys and girls in their 70s and 80s. Loki, tell us about the regatta today it was a great day great weather great wind and a ton of boats so it was a lot of fun so neat to see the CRAB boats out there as well and kind of dicing it up with them to is really neat to see that. Well I’m a lifelong sailor I got injured when I was in college my junior year and then I stopped sailing for a number of years. It was a sport that was not being done at all for disabled people and I moved to the Annapolis area in 2003 and started sailing a lot with CRAB then it’s it’s a great regatta because we get boats from all over the place all sorts of different types of boats we have all sorts of levels of racers and people are just here have fun and recognize and support CRAB. It is so much more important to me to support the local people that are quadriplegics have no legs or want to get out on the bay that is so local so important that is why we do the CRAB regatta every year. Once a month crab hosts a sale free event where they invite any disabled people their families caregivers and friends to experience the joy of sailing newcomers and old comers who have sailed with CRAB in the past are all encouraged to come down and enjoy the wind and water. It just it’s a chance to get people out sailing who normally don’t have that opportunity and you know we have people with physical disabilities we also get people with intellectual disabilities as well as we work with the Annapolis police with at-risk youth so we get a little bit of everything. It’s good days you see people come back they’re just so happy you know we’ve had people comment that you know there’s just something they didn’t think they’d ever be able to do again. So Pricilla how long have you been participating in CRAB this other words I think three Wow and you’re how old now 12 so you’ve been doing it for a long time your old pro what’s so great about CRAB? tell us a little bit about the program. Well it helps you experience what happens on a boat. Yeah no it’s it’s awesome to just be out on the water and just feel free right? Yes! It just feels good to work with them and and see the people that thought they couldn’t go sailing at all and there they are out on the water again taking control of the boat and control of something besides their wheelchairs. What do you think about CRAB? it’s phenomenal I’ve told a lot of people about it because we have a lot of friends that are autistic like our son it’s fabulous and it’s very helpful and you know it makes their their day it makes them happy. it’s we’ve got the specially equipped boats and we get people from all over the area we do spinnaker non spinnaker all sorts of one design classes and everybody just loves it in a party which is important is awesome and it’s a great fundraiser for CRAB. Alright that’s it for this episode of the Beat. I hope you guys all enjoyed it and check us out at us sailling.org to see where we’re going next. Check you later.

Ryan Sneddon

Like many things in Annapolis, our best holiday tradition involves the water. It’s the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade and here’s exactly what you need to know to enjoy it.

eastport yacht club logo

First Things First: The Basics

The 2023 Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade is December 9 from 6–8 PM. All of the action either happens in the harbor or down Spa Creek & Ego Alley.

eastport yacht club logo

Where can I watch?

Any of the pins on the map above are good options. Most of the street end parks are quite small so stake out your spot early.

Best viewing points

Spa creek bridge.

This is the best vantage point but fully exposed to the wind so it can be mighty cold. But you can see both fleets and get a close up when they switch places.

This is as close as you can get to the boats without being on one. Get here early if you want to see every little detail of how the displays are constructed.

Get a great view of all the boats as they circle around the harbor. You can get a higher vantage point if you join the We Care and Friends fundraiser on Watermark’s Harbor Queen. In lieu of tickets, bring a monetary donation, toy, blanket, clothing, or non-perishable food item to get in.

Other viewing options

If you have friends with homes or offices on the water, time to get them an early Christmas present and hope for an invite.

The Choptank is also a great option but space is limited and last year there was a private party on the entire second floor.

Where do I park?

The official parking garage of the parade is the garage at Park Place – 100 Westgate Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401 . The free circulator shuttle will run downtown.

Other options include:

  • Hillman Garage . Cost: not free. Likelihood of spot: low
  • Gotts Court Garage . Cost: not free. Likelihood of spot: medium
  • Calvert Street Garage . Cost: free on weekends. Likelihood of spot: high
  • Knighton Garage . Cost: not free. Likelihood of spot: medium
  • Street parking . Cost: not free. Likelihood of spot: low

Remember that you get 1 hour free in the Hillman Garage and two hours in meter spots by using the code ParkDTA on the ParkMobile app until New Year’s Day.

Impacting Communities Through Sailing

Eastport Yacht Club

We are an aacps: business/community partnership | 2020 business partner of the year nominee, recognized for their support of aacps by stem office.

The Eastport Yacht Club (EYC) Foundation has been a partner with Anne Arundel County Public Schools for ten years. Over those years the foundation has played a key role in helping to provide students with amazing and unique opportunities at every level, including elementary school, middle school, high school, and beyond. In a country filled with Yacht clubs and Marine and Maritime businesses, you will find few that strive to have a community impact that rivals the EYC Foundation. The EYC Foundation’s mission is to bring boating, education, and community together.

The STEM through Sailing and Boating program is offered to fifth grade students and provides students with engaging experiences in various modules connected to recreation and career standards in boating. Students who have access to the water by proximity but lack the network or economic means to experience being on a boat are able to use this experience to grow their knowledge of skills and standards required to pursue this as an interest or passion. It is the goal to encourage students to realize the possibilities of a career or community connection through marine and maritime opportunities. When asked about the partnership, the Principal of Eastport Elementary School shared, “Eastport’s fifth grade students were thrilled to experience your wonderful STEM through the Sailing and Boating program. The knowledge and insight they gained in their research during this trip will remain with them and hopefully instill a lifelong interest in the Chesapeake Bay and its abundant resources.” In addition, a student from Georgetown East Elementary said, “I was always afraid to go on a boat, but now I know about all the safety requirements. Once I was on the sail boat I could see how the simple machines worked! I can’t wait to tell my parents about it!”The EYC Foundation participates in the Adaptive Sailing Program run by Parks and Rec, demonstrating that everyone can enjoy the water.

The EYC Foundation also provides scholarships for students to learn how to sail through their Junior Sailing Scholarship program and for students to pursue educational or career aspirations through the Marine and Maritime Scholarship Program. One recent scholarship recipient shared, “This scholarship will help me pursue my educational goals in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.” Another opportunity is Community Grants open to anyone who meets the requirements of aligning the use of money to an educational component, for kids ages 5-18, location of envisioned program on waterways in Anne Arundel County, and collaborating with other groups or organizations.

Providing opportunities to help educate, inspire, and support students in the Marine and Maritime fields the EYC Foundation and AACPS collaborate on the Career Expo. This brings to life these opportunities for students. One student, from Lindale Middle School said, “I never realized how many jobs are related to the water!”

The EYC Foundation provides these amazing programs by restlessly raising money. These opportunities and experiences come at a cost. The foundation does a tremendous job of fundraising, pursuing grants, and soliciting donations. The members give their time, knowledge, and skills to continue implementing their mission with the goal of increasing their impact each year.

After a year’s hiatus due to COVID-19, the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade , a longtime Annapolis holiday favorite, will return from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

As the yacht club’s website describes it: “Every year on the second Saturday in December … boats suddenly appear out of the cold winter night illuminated with thousands of colored lights and crewed by jolly revelers.”

The parade, which takes place in the Annapolis Harbor and Spa Creek, was first organized in the late 1970s. It grew slowly each year, and in 1983 the yacht club formalized the parade.

Tom Stalder and Trudy Miller Stalder are co-chairs of the event and are hoping for good weather this year. Stalder has been involved in the parade since 1987 and Miller Stalder for more than 20 years. She became co-chair three years ago.

Stalder said they have more boats and sponsors than in years past and the interest in the parade has become overwhelming for the couple. Forty-one boats signed up for this year’s parade.

“We meet monthly and it is a [year’s] worth of planning to put this together,” Miller Stalder said. “October and November are pressure months with the push to the parade.”

Last year, they planned until late October. Then it was decided the parade couldn’t happen because of the ongoing pandemic. She said it was a difficult decision, but one they had to make.

Miller Stalder said she felt great when she found out this year’s parade would take place.

“We started planning [in] January and we just hoped this pandemic would be slowed down enough for us to have this parade,” she said. “People are just more excited to get out this year to have fun.”

The couple splits responsibilities when it comes to planning. Stalder takes care of all the on-the-water things, including permits and having the Coast Guard shut down the harbor. Miller Stalder oversees sponsorships, public relations and more.

“There [are] a lot of dangers out there, with the cold water, backlights from the city and lights on the [boats,]” Stalder said. “It is a challenging task for skippers and we have a mandatory meeting for them to attend.”

Many of the boat owners have been telling Stalder they are excited to get out on the water for the parade. He calls the parade a gift to the city that keeps on giving every year.

One of Miller Stalder’s favorite parts of the event is the parade-themed Christmas cards, designed each year by an artist and sold to the public. This year, Barbara Brower, an Annapolis artist, won the competition to design the cards. So far, 1,200 cards have been sold.

EYC Foundation seeks to support exceptional students that have a passion for the maritime world, a love of life on the water, a respect for the marine environment and a dream of a lifetime career in the industry.

Today’s successful Marine & Maritime Scholarship program was designed to enhance EYCF’s Career Expo mission. Wheras the Expo is about helping students discover the countless possibilities for careers in the industry, the scholarship program is about supporting students that have made their decision and are on their way to making those careers happen.

Originally known as MAST (MArine Skills Training) Scholarships, the program was launched in 2015. That first year, 5 students were each awarded $700 per semester. Eight years later, in 2023 the program grew to 12 students that were initially promised $2000 for the school year. Thanks to a generous donation from a Friend of the Foundation, EYCF was able to surprise recipients with news that their second semester award doubled to $2000.

Scholarship recipients that have completed their schooling and certifications are thriving all over the word today.
