Billionaire Lachlan Murdoch Buys 68-Year-Old Superyacht

When your superyacht's also your tinnie...

Lachlan Murdoch, heir to the Murdoch media empire, has reportedly purchased a fully refurbished, 43-metre long yacht for a cool $30 million ($22.5 million USD). 

The freshly re-done 1954 motor yacht, Istros , was sold over a month ago. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that their sources say Istros will be motoring into Sydney Harbour in the near future, where it will be docked nearby the Murdoch’s $100 million ($75 million USD) Bellevue Hill Estate called Le Manoir. 

News of the sale comes as Murdoch awaits the delivery of his 60-metre, $150 million sailing yacht which is still under construction at the Royal Huisman Shipyard in Amsterdam — which means that the Istros is essentially the Murdoch family’s very, very expensive ‘tinnie.’ 

The delicately refurbished 68-year-old ‘tinnie’ comes with 5 staterooms that can accommodate up to 10 guests, state of the art satellite TV technology as well as a fully stocked private bar and lounge area on the top deck. That’s quite the cruise-about.

The two new ships will pair extremely well with the family’s new Point Piper ‘boat shed,’ which Lachlan and his wife Sarah Murdoch reportedly paid a staggering $37 million for, granting it the official title of “ Australia’s most expensive boat shed .”

When the family relocated from Los Angeles to Sydney over a year ago, there was no certainty around how long they would be living in Australia, however The Sydney Morning Herald has now officially confirmed that the Murdochs have officially settled down in Australia, claiming that the election of Democratic President Joe Biden was a major factor behind the move. 

Lachlan Murdoch will maintain his position as the Executive Chairman and CEO of Fox Corporation, a conservative media outlet in the United States. The move probably won’t bother Lachlan too much, as he continues to jet back and forth between the US on his $90 million private jet.

Murdoch's superyacht 'Sarissa' arrives

Dutch carbon-fibre performance sloop with cockpit swimming pool.

Lachlan and Sarah Murdoch’s stunning new carbon-fibre superyacht Sarissa has arrived in Sydney in time for summer. Designed by Bill Tripp and built by Dutch yard Vitters, the cutting-edge yacht was two years in the making and is the largest carbon-fibre sloop built to date in the Netherlands.

Vitters Shipyard's website describes  Sarissa as a spectacular 42.6 m carbon globetrotter and performance sloop with a fully modern hull shape, sail plan, and foils. 

Hydraulic sailing and deck systems are said to provide improved reaction speed, load and stiffness to safely facilitate the sailing performance this modern and technical yacht was designed for.

Other custom technical features are an in-house developed hydraulic steering system with rudder feedback, as well as a unique system of back stays and running stays to operate both her cruising and racing sail configurations. The yacht has a lifting keel.

The mainsheet has been placed on an arch spanning the cockpit to keep the deck clear, while the aft cockpit can be transformed into a swimming pool for the kids.

Sarissa's design was guided by close client input and involvement, says Vitters, adding that the yacht will be used to sail all over the world with the family in tow and will take part in the established superyacht regattas.

The layout and deck plan emphasise a clean and modern look, while the family friendly layout below decks boasts a full-beam after stateroom, three guests cabins and three crew cabins.

The stunning interior is by Rhoades Young Design Ltd using a combination of limed oak, dark Italian walnut, Indian rosewood, carbon, dark leather and brushed stainless steel.

Finished in swordfish blue Alexseal paint, with a Ribling 555 tender in the 'garage', the 163 tonne Sarissa has a 56m carbon mast and will be hard to miss moored at Wooloomooloo in Sydney’s CBD.

Meantime, father Rupert reportedly listed his 184ft yacht Rosehearty , built by Perini Navi in Italy in 2006, for sale in September this year for $29.7 million. This followed his divorce from wife Wendi Deng.

Lachlan Murdoch is one step closer to adding a new $150million superyacht to his collection of luxury vessels.

The News Corp heir is set to receive the superyacht after patiently waiting five years for it to be developed and finally constructed by  Dutch company Royal Huisman.

The superyacht has been shrouded in secrecy and was dubbed Project 404 and cost at least $150million.

Mr Murdoch's lavish expenditure comes despite the media giant dealing with two massive lawsuits.

The first is a $2.4billion defamation lawsuit brought against Fox News Network and its parent company Fox Corp over its coverage of unfounded US vote rigging claims.

The second is against Crikey where Lachlan claims a column falsely suggested he 'illegally conspired with Donald Trump to incite' the deadly January 2021 Capitol riot.

The 51-year-old does not appear too overwhelmed with the legal matters at hand as he awaits the delivery of his fourth superyacht. 

The 59.7m sailing yacht has been half a decade in development with details of its construction kept largely in the dark.

Photos of the vessel were published by The Superyacht Times  and shed more light on the final appearance of the superyacht.

The vessel was designed by UK based company Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design and is currently waiting to be launched from Vollenhove shipyard in the Netherlands.

The vessel features a 'reversed bow' and 'sleek profile with powerful hull lines' along with an ultra-luxurious interior design by French company Studio Liaigre. 

The company also  fits out homes and boats for the world's ultra-rich families. 

It has room for 12 guests and 10 staff, will have an al fresco dining area, a wet bar and multiple entertaining areas. 

But that's not all.

According to Royal Huisman, the 'unique and truly inspiring yacht' will house 'an expansive, lavish beach club', which is a luxury open-air pool and seating.

There is also a 'huge transom opening' that allows guests to access an 'expansive beach club area'. 

'Sarissa' is written across the stern of the boat and shares the same name as a $30million vessel that is part of collection.

Mr Murdoch is an enthusiastic sailor, having raced his 24-metre sail yacht Swan 82, Ipixuna at Hamilton Island in early 2021, and entered the Sydney to Hobart in 1997. 

Fox News Network and its parent company Fox Corp have been hit by a $2.4billion defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems.

The firm, which is one of the largest providers of electronic vote counting machines in the US, is claiming that its business was harmed by falsehoods aired by Fox News based on Donald Trump's lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

In a sworn deposition ahead of the trial, Rupert Murdoch acknowledged some of the network's stars endorsed the false claims that the election was stolen.

But he denied all of Fox backed Trump's baseless claims of widespread fraud after his election defeat.

Fox News denies defamation - saying the hosts' words were taken out of context.

The case has potential ramifications for a separate lawsuit being brought by Murdoch's eldest son, Lachlan against Australian news website, Crikey.

He is suing over a column he claims falsely suggested he 'illegally conspired with Donald Trump to incite' the deadly January 2021 US Capitol riot.

T he Murdoch name holds some serious power. Rupert Murdoch created the entertainment giant Fox and News Corp.  and with that comes a lot of wealth, and he hasn't been shy in sharing it with his six children. In particular, his eldest son, Lachlan Murdoch, knows a thing or two about spending his and his family's money, as he lives an extravagant life.

Lachlan grew up followingin his father's footsteps, ready to become a businessman. By 1997, Lachlan was the deputy chief operating officer at News Corp., per Business Insider . Although he left the family business in 2005, he later returned to the entertainment giant. In 2014, he took on the role of executive co-chairman of 21st Century Fox and News Corp. After Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019 for a $71.3 billion payout, Lachlan took on a new position, becoming the chief executive of Fox Corp. Amid the Disney deal, Rupert acquired $12 billion, and gave his children $2 million each!

Lachlan is rolling in dough — from his jobs to the money he's received from his father. Although it's unclear how much the businessman is worth, his reported total compensation for 2022 was $21.7 million, per Business Insider. And that number is sure to climb! In what seemed like a real-life episode of HBO's "Succession," Lachlan was named his father's successor . Lachlan's bringing home the big bucks, and he spends it like no other!

Lachlan Murdoch Has Multiple Home Sweet Homes

For Lachlan Murdoch, the saying "home sweet home" should be plural. With how wealthy he is, it's no surprise the businessman loves splurging on a nice residence. In 2017, Murdoch purchased a winter wonderland in Aspen, Colorado, per Mansion Global . With more than 13,000 square-feet, six bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a guest house, there's truly no reason to leave! It comes complete with a home theater, gym, and for wine lovers, a full cellar. All these amenities didn't come cheap, either. According to the outlet, Murdoch paid $29 million for the estate. But he must have felt he was getting a good deal because the listing price was originally $44 million.

While his Colorado home sounds incredible, it's not the only property the businessman owns. In 2019, Murdoch set a new record for the "largest residential real estate transaction in California history," per Los Angeles Magazine . The chairman purchased $150 million worth of real estate! His purchase included the French-style home featured in the sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies," formally known as the Chartwell estate, along with the home of late President Ronald Reagan. The Chartwell estate offers 11 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, per CNBC . The 25,000-square-foot home has a 40-car parking garage, beautiful gardens and secret tunnels. With all these extravagant homes, Murdoch and his family will never find themselves without shelter!

Lachlan Murdoch Is A Yacht Enthusiast

They say work hard, play hard, and Lachlan Murdoch definitely fits this to a tee. While he is all about his and his family's business, he also likes spending money on some lavish objects . One thing the businessman is into is yachts and they cost a pretty penny. According to the  Daily Mail , Murdoch has long been a part of the boating world and is a yacht enthusiast. In 2022, he made a $30 million superyacht purchase! At 42 meters, the yacht can host up to nine guests in 5 different cabins. Complete with a dining space and lounge area on the top deck. This $30 million purchase is a mere fraction of the $150 million yacht the businessman purchased in 2019.

Details about building the $150 million superyacht remained under wraps for years. However, Superyacht Times shared a rare glimpse into Murdoch's purchase in 2023. The boat, called Sarissa, is nearly 60 meters long and fits up to 12 guests, as well as 12 cabin members! The top of the boat has classic wooden flooring with sleek black furniture, perfect for entertaining guests. But the businessman has yet to set sail on the superyacht as it is still being built, per the  Daily Mail . However, Murdoch clearly doesn't mind waiting for perfection, especially if it's costing him $150 million!

Media heir Lachlan Murdoch just made a huge splash Down Under, buying a boat shed on the coast of Australia for about $29.8 million ($38 million in Australian dollars).

The mammoth sale was first reported by the Sydney Morning Herald and confirmed to The Times by a person close to the deal.

Murdoch — a son of billionaire Rupert Murdoch who serves as co-chairman of News Corp. and executive chairman of the Fox Corp. — is no stranger to huge real estate transactions. In 2019, he paid $150 million for the “Beverly Hillbillies” mansion in Bel-Air , which ranks as the second-priciest home sale in California history.

His new boat shed is much humbler than the Bel-Air mega-mansion. Clad in green shingles, the modest structure sits on 131 feet of waterfront in Point Piper, a small suburb of Sydney that regularly ranks as one of the country’s most expensive communities.

The reason for the eye-popping price tag? The depth of the bay, reported Forbes Global Properties when the shed first surfaced for sale earlier this year. Point Piper offers unusually deep water, which makes it much easier for the ultra-wealthy to moor their mega-yachts.

Murdoch’s place takes advantage of the setting with two boat docks and four moorings, as well as a swimming pool surrounded by flat, grassy lawns. The listing, which was held by Private Property Global’s Ken Jacobs, describes it as a “privately-owned marina facility attached to a residential property.”

A two-story structure sits at the center of the half-acre property. On the main level, a wood workshop with stained-glass windows offers space to store and work on boats. Above that, there’s an apartment with white walls, hardwood floors and picture windows overlooking the bay.

Vaulted ceilings top an open-concept space with a living room, dining area and wood kitchen. Elsewhere are two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Murdoch and his wife, model and TV host Sarah Murdoch, sold their previous home in Point Piper for about $14.55 million USD in 2005, according to the Sydney Morning Herald . Four years ago, they shelled out $29 million for a modern lodge on 45 acres in Aspen, Colo.

Lachlan Murdoch is the third of Rupert Murdoch’s six children and the elder of two sons. In the process of Rupert handing off his vast media empire , Lachlan was named News Corp.’s co-chairman in 2014 and Fox Corp.’s chairman and CEO in 2019. Forbes puts the Murdoch family’s net worth at $23.2 billion.
