MILAN — Italian financial police has seized a Russian-owned superyacht valued at $578 million in the port of Trieste as part of seizures of oligarch wealth to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the war on Ukraine.

The “Sy A” yacht was identified by Italian police as belonging to billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, who made a fortune in fertilizer production and coal energy. It was seized Friday evening.

143m Nobiskrug superyacht Sailing Yacht A "arrested" in Trieste

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The 143 metre Nobiskrug superyacht Sailing Yacht A has been "arrested" in Trieste by local authorities following new economic sanctions by the European Union against Russia.

The news was confirmed on March 12 by Ferdinando Giugliano, media advisor to Italy’s prime minister, who announced that the Guardia di Finanza had boarded the vessel while it lay in a dry dock in the Port of Trieste.

The sail-assisted motor yacht was commissioned in 2011 by Russian industrialist Andrey Melnichenko, who was named by EU officials in the latest wave of economic sanctions targeting key players in the agricultural, pharmaceutical and telecommunications industries that provide significant revenue to the Russian Federation.

However, Alex Andreev, a spokesman for Melnichenko, told BOAT International that the sanctions were "baseless" and "unjustified". "Andrey Melnichenko is an international self-made businessman, entrepreneur and investor in children's education. He has no relation to the tragic events in Ukraine. He has no political affiliations. There is no justification whatsoever for placing him on the EU sanctions list."

He added: "To draw a parallel between attending a meeting through membership in a business council, just as dozens of businesspeople from both Russia and Europe have done in the past, and undermining or threatening a country is absurd and nonsensical. We will be disputing these baseless and unjustified sanctions and believe that the rule of law and common sense will prevail."

Melnichenko is the founder of major fertiliser producer EuroChem Group as well as coal producer SUEK. On March 9 he resigned as a member of the board and non-executive director of both companies. Andreev confirmed that both EuroChem Group and SUEK are "100% privately owned and not affiliated with any government."

Sailing Yacht A is in the port undergoing planned improvement works on the boom of its forward mast and additional "fine-tuning to improve its navigation and save even more fuel, using the most innovative environmental technology developed for the vessel", the spokesman confirmed.

The news follows a handful of arrests in Europe that began with the confiscation of motor yacht Amore Vero in La Ciotat, followed by the arrest of motor yachts Lady M and Lena lying in Imperia and Sanremo respectively.

A £530 million mega yacht owned by Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko was seized on Friday by Italian authorities.

The vessel, called “SY A”, was in storage at the northeastern port of Trieste , a statement from Italy ’s financial police said.

Mr Melnichenko was one of a number of Russian elites recently sanctioned by the EU over close supposed links to the Kremlin, in response to Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine .

In announcing its decision the EU said Mr Melnichenko - who owns fertilizer producer EuroChem Group and coal company SUEK - was among a group of 36 businesspeople who met with Mr Putin and other officials on February 24 to discuss the impact of economic sanctions by the EU and EU.

The EU Council decision said: “The fact that he was invited to attend this meeting shows that he is a member of the closest circle of Vladimir Putin and that he is supporting or implementing actions or policies which undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, as well as stability and security in Ukraine.

“It also shows that he is one of the leading businesspersons involved in economic sectors providing a substantial source of revenue to the government of Russia, which is responsible for annexation of Crimea and destabilization of Ukraine.”

The businessman is worth approximately £8.4billion ($11 billion) - making him the eight richest man in Russia, according to Forbes.

The 143m (469ft) long superyacht was constructed by German shipbuilder Nobiskrug and features a host of amenities, including an underwater observation pod and hybrid diesel-electric propulsion.

Andrey and Aleksandra Melnichenko

European countries have responded rapidly to seize assets from Russian oligarchs and have already taken a number of the sailing vessels.

Italian authorities have taken Lena belonging to Gennady Timchenko, in the port of San Remo and the Lady M owned by Alexei Mordashov in nearby Imperia.

And French customs officials seized the yacht of Rosneft boss Igor Sechin, before it attempted to flee a French Riviera port.

A number of superyachts owned by Russian billionaires appeared to have found temporary haven in the Maldives, a luxury holiday destination, that crucially does not have an extradition treaty with the US or EU.

A superyacht owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko has been seized by Italian police.

The $578 million Sailing Yacht A – which is the world’s biggest sailing yacht, according to the Italian government – has been sequestered at the northern port of Trieste, the government said.

The seizure was confirmed by the prime minister's office on Saturday, a few days after the businessman was placed on an EU sanctions list following Russia's invasion of Ukraine .

The vessel, which is 143 metres high, was designed by Philippe Starck and built by Nobiskrug in Germany.

Mr Melnichenko owns major fertiliser producer EuroChem Group and coal company SUEK.

Last week, Italian police seized villas and yachts worth $156 million from five high-profile Russians who have been placed on the sanctions list.

The police operations were part of a co-ordinated drive by western states to penalise wealthy Russians linked to President Vladimir Putin.

The UK expanded its sanctions regime against seven Russian oligarchs on Thursday over their links to Mr Putin.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was the most high-profile name on the list, as the UK government imposed asset freezes and a travel ban on the billionaire.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said: "With their close links to Putin they are complicit in his aggression. The blood of the Ukrainian people is on their hands. They should hang their heads in shame."

A magnificent sight unfolded this morning at the Seadock industrial port in Trieste, as the inaugural launch of a series of maxi yachts, crafted by CNB, a renowned shipyard based in Ancona, for the Cantieri delle Marche, took place.

Seeking expanded production facilities, CNB has partnered with Seadock, a subsidiary of the Samer Group, to construct the raw hull of a 30.40-meter maxi yacht. After six months of meticulous craftsmanship, the vessel graced the waters, propelled by Seadock’s facilities, destined for completion in Ancona.

In a strategic move, Seadock, backed by the Samer Group, has allocated a generous space of 2,000 square meters, including 1,100 covered, to accommodate CNB’s endeavor. This collaboration signifies more than just a maritime feat; it’s a testament to the synergy between public and private sectors driving Trieste’s maritime prowess.

“This launch exemplifies our relentless commitment to fostering maritime excellence, a vital asset for Trieste, Monfalcone, and the broader national port industry,” remarked Zeno D’Agostino, President of the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority.

The Trieste operation has also birthed a ripple effect, generating approximately 50 specialized jobs. Within Seadock’s confines, craftsmen meticulously crafted the raw hull, marking a milestone in Trieste’s shipbuilding legacy. The vessel now embarks on the next leg of its journey to Ancona, where it will undergo transformation into a nautical masterpiece.

Enrico Samer, speaking on behalf of the Samer Group, underscored Seadock’s pivotal role in facilitating Italy’s maritime prominence. “Seadock’s expansion mirrors our nation’s robust shipbuilding industry, a beacon of resilience in today’s economic landscape,” he remarked.

As the first of many, the unveiling of this maxi yacht heralds a new era of maritime innovation, with Seadock poised to continue its partnership with CNB in crafting yet another masterpiece in the months to come.

Trieste (Triest in German, Trst in Slovenian and Croatian) is a city in North-East Italy that was once a very influential and powerful centre of politics, literature, music, art and culture under Austrian-Hungarian dominion.

Today, Trieste is often forgotten as tourists head off to bigger Italian cities like Rome, Milan, and Trieste's archrival Venice. But those tourists miss out on a very charming and underestimated city, with a quiet and lovely almost Eastern European atmosphere, several pubs and cafes, some stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view. It was also, for a while, the residence of the famous Irish writer, James Joyce. Click on the above button to find out more...

As the poet Umberto Saba wrote: “Trieste has an unsociable grace. Located between the sea and the mountains of Carso, beautiful and fascinating, she does not like to show off, although she conquers her visitor at first sight.”

Tergeste, as Trieste was named during the Roman era, is to be discovered on foot, to fully taste her richness and to breathe, through her streets, buildings and monuments, her 2000-year-old history.
