As you gaze at the dramatic main entrance of the 72-metre Feadship Utopia , you’ll sense that perfection is indeed attainable in the super yacht world. Delivered in 2018 by Rossinavi, UTOPIA IV is the harmonious balance of a luxurious superyacht and a high-performance sport yacht. UTOPIA IV is available for charter in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and New England.

Fitted with four MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines that provide power to four Rolls Royce hydro jets, UTOPIA IV effortlessly glides through the water with a cruising speed of 24 knots while achieving impressive top speeds. Considering her size, this performance is quite remarkable.

With an exterior featuring coupe-like design cues of long handsome lines coupled with a slender silhouette, her interior is sleek and wide and can sleep 12 guests across six spacious suites. The tastefully appointed interior blends minimalism with sophisticated European taste sourced from haute couture brands Hermes and Armani.

The forward-facing owner’s suite has a commanding view provided by floor-to-ceiling windows and features a grand bathroom with a double shower and jacuzzi. The master suite also contains a sitting room, office, and private balcony.

Q&A with the Owner of Utopia IV on Building a Dream

Having built an empire, JR Ridinger the owner of the latest launched Utopia IV by Rossinavi, built his latest superyacht dream with entertainment, business and family in mind. With such a sentiment, the process of merging design, function and aesthetic couldn't have come together more perfectly following previous fleet members such as Utopia I, II and III. We find out how the latest legend of them all, the Rossinavi built Utopia IV, made every asking dream a reality.

Congratulations Loren and JR on bringing 63-metre Project Vector to the water. How has your journey working with Rossinavi and Enrico Gobbi to bring this vision to life?

Thank you very much, that's a great question. I never built a yacht before and never really considered it as an option because I had heard too many shipyard nightmares. We had scoured the marketplace to find a vessel that met our requirements for a new yacht that would have more space for entertaining as well as our rapidly expanding family.

Thankfully, I was forward-looking/thinking as yachting has become a lifestyle that serves us well personally, socially and businesswise. We knew that we wanted more space and speed, a shallow draft, a metal hull and the most modern technology. We looked for a year and no broker could find the match.  We started doing a personal search and came across this revolutionary new concept. At first, I was skeptical and was sure that there was something wrong with it from what I know about yacht/marine architecture and engineering. On top of that she was pricey and over our number at the time. Loren (my wife) got on the phone with Claudia Rossi (the owner and CEO -- Claudio's - daughter) and they somehow made the deal work!

After we had a meeting of the minds on the basic deal the Rossinavi team came to Miami for a few days and we all worked through details. They were absolutely fabulous and we consummated the agreement. More importantly, we broke bread at a favorite Italian restaurant and became friends anchored in mutual respect as well as partners in the project.

Enrico Gobbi (Team For Design) is simply a genius -- so easy to work with and has made this yacht into a masterpiece of art and design!

You chose a fitting name for this stunning Rossinavi boat, what was the thinking behind naming Utopia IV?

We all aspire to live in a perfect world, Utopia. Utopia I was a 105 ft. Hatteras Yacht extension followed by Utopia II (a 116 ft. classic canoe stern Feadship). Utopia III regrettably is for sale because you cannot have 2 "girlfriends" at once! She is a magnificent 150 ft. Trinity, built in the heyday of Trinities - when Trinity built yachts right under the commercial registration and flagging requirements so you got the most boat for the money, lots of speed and a shallow draft. There are so many incredible memories left aboard. She is kind of a legend in her own time and has been impeccably cared for ( www.TheUtopia3.com )

That being said, nothing can equal the new Utopia IV (Rossinavi Vector)!

She has a stunning balance and an incredibly sleek exterior, how involved were you in her creation?

Thank you!  We very much knew what we were looking for, which made it really efficient to work with the Rossinavi team on exterior design and our stringent requirements.  I thoroughly researched Rossinavi's work and reputation as I performed a good amount of due diligence because they are a relatively new pedigree. They had recently won awards at the Monaco Boat Show, they were known to pay all of their contractors on time and they had a great reputation all the way back prior to Rossinavi's inception to when they were just metal fabricators and hull builders.  Everything they did was solid.

My concerns about what appeared to be impossible engineering/design/marine architecture were promptly resolved by learning that this new paradigm was already being used by the U.S. Navy; the technology and engineering has become commercially available in the last several years. It is absolutely revolutionary and leading the parade!

We are yet to have a glimpse inside, could you tell us the kind of style you have gone for with your interiors? Are there any stand out features?

Custom interior design can make or break a yacht's appeal. Our experience with this in the past has been frustrating, complicated, compromised and expensive (over budget).  This time, however, the process of selecting custom options was surprisingly an exception to that. Gobbi got to know us and some of our projects and we made it clear that we loved his basic concept for the yacht. He worked closely with Loren, was fast and exceeded our expectations. We are still pinching ourselves.  He really cares.

The entire design of the yacht is Italian sleek and sexy -- inspired by Italian auto lines and elegance. We loved the minimalistic design that already existed. Enrico and Loren hit it off and Loren is already a bit of an interior designer in her own right having decorated our seven homes around the world. Enrico is simply a genius and, fortunately, we shared the same vision. This has not been our experience with other designers or interior decorators.  His attention to quality and detail is impressive and he doesn't miss anything. His passion for this project would be hard to equal and he did it with us, but as if it were his own. His fingerprint or signature is on this masterpiece. He also is cost conscious without compromising the elements or quality of the design. The most amazing thing about this process is that it was the first project in our lives that was easy, gorgeous, on-time and within budget.  

If you had to describe Utopia IV in three words what would they be?

Sleek, sexy & Italian!

Report finds inadequate lookout led to Utopia IV collision with tanker

An accident report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has found that the collision between 63 metre superyacht Utopia IV and a gas tanker was caused by the crew not maintaining a lookout.

The two vessels collided on December 23, 2021, approximately 15 miles north-northwest of New Providence Island. Utopia IV was carrying seven charter guests and 12 crewmembers at the time and was making passage to Bimini Island when she hit the stern of the 49 metre steel tanker Tropic Breeze at 10pm. The force of the collision pierced the stern of the tanker, which caused it to sink to a depth of 2,000 metres and its crew to abandon ship.

The report details that Utopia IV was travelling at 20 knots when she struck Tropic Breeze. The captain was not in the wheelhouse when the incident occurred having left 12 minutes prior to check on the guests. According to the report, the bosun, who was left in the wheelhouse, was not certified as mate or captain and therefore was not allowed by regulations to perform watchstanding duties by himself. It is also understood that the bosun was multitasking and logging navigation data "and therefore was distracted from performing effective lookout duties", the report detailed. 

The tanker was travelling at a speed of five knots and carrying a cargo of marine gas oil and liquid petroleum gas. The captain of Tropic Breeze had also left the wheelhouse to use the restroom prior to the incident.

None of the watchstanders on Utopia IV or Tropic Breeze reported seeing the other vessel on radar, which is set to a three-mile radius, while visibility was understood to be "good" in spite of bow spray reported to have been collecting on the windshield of Utopia IV . The report determined that, given the relative speed of both vessels, it was likely that none of the watchstanders had looked at the radar in the 12 minutes before the collision or completed a visual assessment of the surroundings. 

CCTV in the galley of Utopia IV captured the moment of the collision. Equipment and several of the yacht's crew were thrown to the deck or into bulkheads; three crew sustained minor injuries. Utopia IV ’s captain was in the main dining area and was thrown into the forward bulkhead and door frame. 

The chief engineer of Tropic Breeze investigated the damage and discovered that the engine room was flooding rapidly. The captain made a VHF distress call and decided to abandon the vessel; a liferaft was launched. Meanwhile, Utopia IV ’s chief engineer restarted the yacht’s engines, which had shut down after the collision, and a distress call was made from the wheelhouse. The yacht attempted to rescue the crew from the tanker but sea swells prevented them from boarding. The tanker crew were eventually rescued by a passing motor yacht, Amara , which heard the distress calls and diverted its course to assist.

Utopia IV ’s chief stewardess told investigators she saw the Tropic Breeze ’s navigation lights illuminated following the collision. According to the Utopia IV’ s crew, the Utopia IV ’s lights were all on.

As well as damage to both vessels, 156,500 gallons of marine gas oil was lost with the tanker. The accident resulted in nearly $7.9 million in damages, the report revealed. 

As Utopia IV approached Tropic Breeze from directly astern, the yacht (as the overtaking vessel) was required by 72 COLREGS to give way to the tanker. However, as the watchstanders on both Utopia IV and Tropic Breeze failed to maintain a proper lookout, both were unable to identify the risk of collision and respond suitably. The report said: "Although the Utopia IV bore responsibility as the overtaking vessel to manoeuvre away from the tank vessel, once the yacht’s intentions were unclear and a close-quarters situation had developed, the tank vessel should have taken action." 

NTSB investigators concluded that the probable cause of the collision was Utopia IV ’s wheelhouse crew not maintaining a proper lookout and therefore not identifying the vessel they were overtaking, but with contribution from Tropic Breeze’s bridge team also not maintaining a proper lookout.

“A proper lookout by suitably trained crewmembers is required by the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 and is essential in determining the risk of collision,” the report said. “The effective use of all available resources by a bridge team, including visual scanning, radars, electronic charts, and an automatic identification system, increases collective situational awareness and contributes to a safe navigation watch. Operators and crews should ensure that vessel bridge teams are staffed with certificated/credentialed mariners who are familiar with all bridge navigation equipment and able to independently take immediate action.” ​

The owners of the vessel had previously said in a statement that they were "terribly saddened" by the incident.

The motor yacht UTOPIA III is a superyacht of spacious proportions. This 46 m (150 ft) luxury yacht was the work of by Trinity Yachts in 1999. UTOPIA III used to be named the project or yacht name Lady Linda; Bellini. Superyacht UTOPIA III is a sumptuous yacht that is able to sleep as many as 10 guests on board and has around 9 crew. The naval architecture office which delivered this yacht's design for this ship is Paragon Design and Trinity. Dee Robinson/Victory Lane Enterprises was responsible for the overall interior design.

New Build & Yacht Design of Luxury Yacht UTOPIA III

The yacht's general design work came from Paragon Design and Trinity. The formal naval architect plans are the creation of Paragon Design. Motor Yacht UTOPIA III received her stylish interior designing from the interior design company of Dee Robinson/Victory Lane Enterprises. Created by Trinity Yachts this yacht was fabricated in the known yacht building country the United States. She was officially launched in New Orleans LA in 1999 before being transferred to the owner. Her core hull was constructed with aluminium. The motor yacht main superstructure is made for the most part using aluminium. With a beam of 8.5 metres / 27.9 ft UTOPIA III has fairly large interior. She has a fairly shallow draught of 2.13m (7ft). She had refit improvement and modification carried out in 2008.

This yacht subsumes twin efficient MTU diesel engine(s) and can reach a exhilarant maximum limit speed of approximately 23 knots. The engine of the ship creates 1800 horse power (or 1656 kilowatts). Her total HP is 4500 HP and her total Kilowatts are 3311. UTOPIA III is propelled by twin screw propellers. As for the yacht’s stabalisers she uses Koopnautic. Concerning bow thruster maneuverability she utilises Abt. UTOPIA III has a/an spirited cruise speed is 20 knots which makes a range of 6500.

Characteristics of Utopian Architecture

Utopia is derived from the Greek ou-topos “no place” or “nowhere”. A utopian society is an idealistic one with no problems, issues, or end in sight. This style aims to reinvent the style of living of the masses by the creation of a perfect place. 

Utopia was a term coined by Thomas More in 1516, in his book of the same name. Utopia lends people an illusion of perfection . Imagine a world where no hardships exist, where everything is as ideal as can be. It is as unfathomable as a world without water. The existence of Utopia is seen only in science fiction and modern fantasy. This genre of books and films provide us with a fresh perspective on life and lifestyle.

The conception of this form of society in architecture was through ideas and notions of a self-sufficient, independent, cohesive plan. There is no clear definition of physical characteristics or common design elements across the range of utopian designs. This allows freedom of thought and expression in the workings of society. The planning and layout have little or no restrictions and facilitates a comfortable style of living. It prioritizes comfort and happiness over fulfilling planning guidelines and rigid structural systems.

Utopian architecture focuses on the social, economic, and political upliftment of the urban fabric. The most important aspect is equality and communal peace. Structures and spaces have unrestricted development without compromising the limit of resources. Rather than consumerism and economic status, the needs and requirements of the users are fulfilled. Technological and scientific developments drive the expansion and growth of urbanities. Banalities like going to work at a 9 to 5 job, endless commutes to work, and staring at screens throughout the day are no longer a part of life. The mundaneness of everyday life is gone and every human being is encouraged to strive for fulfillment over monetary compensation. Inspired by abstract works of art, fictional manuscripts, and movies, this style of architecture waxes poetic against the cruelties and injustices of the world. As the countries wage wars against each other and suffer from civil strife, the formation of a utopian society can see the end of it.

The buildings are planned systematically and hierarchically to attain a higher goal. Collectively, utopian architecture works towards the betterment of society as a whole. Early utopian designers were known as Futurists. They aspired to form a society driven forth by technological advances with the progression of time. Aesthetics were put on the back burner while practicality and utilities were given importance.

Other designs looked toward the formulation of aerial, arboreal habitats where transit was the spine of the city, with each structure acting as a transit hub. Buildings had external pedestrian walkways, roads, rail networks, and bridges. This facilitated vertical and horizontal movement without going back to the ground level. This allowed for better productivity and lesser resources to be used, along with more ground space for nature to flourish. Ultimately this was the most practical and had high probabilities of fruition in case of establishment of space colonies.

However, some conceptual works also saw glorification and embellishment, thereby prioritizing aesthetics and shiny new materials. The focus shifted from the need for a cohesive community. It also instills the beliefs and ideals of a few into the masses. There is a stigma of brainwash and individuality in the form of leadership as there needs to be a clear judiciary to make it permanent.

The redistribution of resources – financial and otherwise- will ensure a balanced community. Blurring the lines socioeconomically will abolish the discrimination between people. The terms ‘the haves’ and the ‘have-nots’ will cease to exist. Driven primarily by emotion and intellect, the architecture will be targeted to engage the mind and hearts of the users. The physical aspects will be focused on visual pleasure. Utopian works capture the eyes of the public due to their unique and outlandish visual impact.

Modern renderings by 21st-century architects see the utilization of extreme climatic zones and oceans as an expansion of existing landforms. These townships will be self-sustainable and self-sufficient. They focus more on the replenishment of natural resources and fossil fuels. Agrarian housing typologies will be revived to encourage agriculture within the city. Entire cities will go off-the-grid and will no longer share resources with neighboring cities.

However, the self-reliability of townships will make them introverted. The isolation of a particular utopia will in turn create discords among its kind as a whole. Unless this new breed of design is implemented on a global or universal scale, the social ideals of a few futurists will destroy the lives of the millions within the utopian society. 

Architecture is meant to be lived in and is rooted in the experience of the user. Utopia is an idealization of life as a whole. The longevity and sustenance of this form of architecture are incalculable. The unpredictability of utopian societies gives rise to doubts and hesitance to make it a permanent way of life. The unpredictability of life is what makes it unique and liveable. With the loss of individuality and restrictions, the architecture will reach new heights, literally and figuratively.
