Diving and Sailing in the Bahamas

Juliet is a charming 100′ Liveaboard Schooner primarily based in Miami running week-long diving trips to the Bahamas every spring, summer, and fall. In the winter look for us in Puerto Rico for our semi-annual Mona Island trips, or in St. Croix where we are based December through early March.

Liveaboard Diving

Voted #1 US-Based Scuba Diving Liveaboard by Sport Diver Magazine. 104′ vessel, 12 passengers, and five friendly and experienced crew members to anticipate your every need. Come see what all the fuss is about.

Multiple Destinations

One week at your choice of four destinations: Bahamas and Florida Keys from downtown Miami April to November, or meet us in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands each winter.

Travel in Comfort

We’re constantly improving accommodations. Six private cabins, 2 ensuite cabins have private heads and showers for extra privacy and 4 standard cabins have plenty of storage and space to stretch out.

For over 15 years & counting…

Juliet Sailing and Diving was founded in 2003 by Captain John Beltramo, who had explored the Bahamas since the early 90s. He had been diving all over the world, and chose to base a scuba diving liveaboard company in the Bahamas because there is something special here. Sold in 2016 to long-time crew member and captain, Liza Hash, Juliet still runs primarily out of Miami, providing trips to the Bahamas in the Bimini area where there is an abundance of fish life and beautiful dive sites. Here we find some of the most breathtaking reefs along the eastern edge of the Santaren Channel – when the weather cooperates, that’s where you’ll find us.

Customer Testimonials

The four crew members on Juliet this past week are some of the most wonderful people I have had the honor to meet! Their care and concern for each of us as individuals made for a very pleasant experience! We cannot wait to see them all again

I had an incredible time, and I can truly say it was the best dive trip I have ever been on.

Crew went above and beyond to make the trip an enjoyable and memorable one.

The diving was awesome and was a fantastic experience, I look forward to doing again.

The time I spent on the Juliet was fantastic. The Captain and crew did everything within reason to make the trip safe and enjoyable. I highly recommend to anyone to charter with the Juliet where ever she is berthed.

What makes these trips is the crew and I simply cannot say enough good things about [them]. They went way beyond reasonable to provide a first rate experience. There was never any question about safety or how things were being done. Overall a fabulous experience.

The crew? were fantastic. They were engaging, fun, communicated well, and set excellent boundaries and expectations in professional and respectful ways. I can?t say enough about how great the trip was.

Crew was fantastic! Friendly, informative, helpful, interactive, low key! The briefings were great, fun learning sessions. Good mix of down time, diving and fun. Good variety of diving, great group of seasoned divers, excellent food!

What an amazing trip! The food was amazing, and I always leave feeling recharged and content. The crew is professional, but also makes me feel like family. Cannot wait until the next time I get to dive with you!

In the 20+ years I?ve been going on diving trips around Florida and the Caribbean?.. this by far was one of the best trips ever!

The crew is very down to earth, ?the dive sites are ?amazing, ?and the accommodations are just right. It is a trip I always enjoy!

Penny Sailing Lesson Snorkeling

Captain Jenn is not only an award-winning ASA instructor, but one of the most unique characters you will ever meet, and never forget. Every day starts with a theme song and a quote of the day in addition to a healthy delicious breakfast against the majestic sea and sky of the keys. Lunch and dinner are healthy, delicious surprises. Her laughter and singing invite you into her world, deeply rooted in the pleasure and delight of nature. She delights in ocean life and I'm sure the creatures all know it. We spotted pods of dolphin five times throughout our week, one of which swam along with our boat. An unforgettable moment. Jenn will teach you not only sailing but its deep joy. We made a friend for life.

Chas and family sailing lessons

Our trip was absolutely incredible. Her knowledge, love of teaching and passion for sailing really came through. She provided a wonderful balance between my strong desire to log lots of sailing, my wife's desire to relax and active engagement with our 8 year old. It was our families "trip of a lifetime" and not only did we enjoy the food and friendship, but we now are comfortable with new sailing skills that can open us tremendous possibilities.

Liveaboard Diving in Virgin Islands

With crystal clear waters, numerous reefs, immense coral, and famous wrecks, the British Virgin Islands are a scuba divers paradise.

Liveaboards in the Virgin Islands are offered on the Cuan Law, a sailing trimaran with all the things a diver needs on board. Virgin Island liveaboards take in the scenery of the beautiful Caribbean Islands whilst allowing you to visit wrecks and reefs a plenty. You will not be disappointed by everything liveaboard diving in the Virgin Islands has to offer. A sun bathing hotspot set sail in Virgin Islands to enjoy the life at sea. You will have the chance to visit the islands to shop and see the sights of these old Dutch and British Virgin islands whilst on your dive liveaboard. Scuba diving in the Virgin Islands you will find large schools of tropical fish, incredible reefs and some brilliant wrecks. The Coral gardens here will impress you and you will find lobster, turtles, moray eels, goliath grouper and Nurse sharks under water on your Virgin Islands tour. Your opportunity to take in famous ship wrecks is here on your Virgin Islands cruise.

Make sure you remember your camera for this spectacular dive cruise. The best Virgin Islands liveaboards have plenty of diving, relaxing and time to enjoy life on board. On a liveaboard tour in Virgin Islands you can expect 3 dives per day including morning, afternoon and night dives. Sailing in the Virgin Islands will allow you the opportunity to relax and enjoy your live aboard. Throughout the rest of your time you will have options to kayak, snorkel, Hobie Cat sailing or even add more dives. A bell rings to announce another dive and all divers gather to be thoroughly breifed on what to expect from the dive site. With only 20 divers on board the biggest Trimaran in the world there is plenty of space to get ready to dive and relax between dives. You will enjoy a cabin room with luxury facilities as well as other spaces to chill out, sleep or socialise. Each day you will be well fed from buffet style options so eat as much of what you like when you like.

Dive Sites and Areas of Virgin Islands

Wreck of the Rhone Probably the greatest dive tour option on a Virgin Islands itinerary. RMS Rhone has been a dive spot since 1975. Lots of parts of this ship are still surprisingly intact including a 15 ft propellor. You get a feel for the sheer size of the ship as you descend towards it. A favourite for many not just wreck enthusiasts.

Wreck of the Chikuzen This Korean refrigerator vessel was based in St. Maarten and is 246 foot. It used to service Japanese fishing fleets. In 1981 when warned to remove the ship before a hurricane the owners decided a great way to solve the problem was set it alight and send it adrift. This caused chaos and the Marina Cay area was under threat so tugboats tried to remove the ship eventuating in the attempt causing huge problems. Finally it sunk and now is an artificial reef for divers to enjoy.

Round Rock A lack of current on the British Virgin Islands means comfort on simple drift dives like this. Round Rock Drift is an underwater swim in the gap between two sets of exposed rocks. Large boulders here are covered in encrusted corals, soft corals and sponges. Schools of Bar Jacks, Brown Chromis and Creole Wrasse make their homes here.

The Blinders This dive tour takes you round gigantic boulders at 35 feet deep. They are heaped everywhere you look on this dive, covered in soft and fire corals and on the bottom sponges and orange cup corals. Many swim throughs on this dive and interesting overhangs offer you up snappers and squirrelfish. If you're lucky watch a Nurse shark swim by, or a Hawksbill Turtle.

Enjoy your liveaboard boats in the Virgin Islands year round. Here you can expect surface temperatures of 24-32 degrees celsius and water temperatures at around 24 - 27 degrees celsius. You will enjoy 18- 30 meters visibility. All in all making for great dive safari conditions. Check the conditions carefully to plan your wetsuit choices, whilst most should be good in a shorty others may need a 5mm full suit in these waters.

Tips For Travellers

The currency at the Virgin Islands is the US dollar. You will need to remember your travel adapters for American plug types (110V) if you wish to charge the all important camera so you can take your memories away with you. Visa requirements will differ for different passport holders please check with your government's website for updates on this. Sun cream is all important when BVI diving, the temperatures may not feel too hot but when on deck you will need to keep yourself protected.

How To Get There & Ports Of Departure

Liveaboard boats in the Virgin Islands depart from Tortula. This port can be reached by flights through San Juan, Puerto Rico. Direct flights to San Juan are available from many U.S. cities. A less expensive option is to fly to St Thomas and take the short ferry (1 hour) across to Tortula.

Considerations

Luxury liveaboard options here cost in the region of $400 per person per day including marine park fees, port taxes and fuel charges. Dive equipment, Nitox, travel insurance and gratuities are not included. It is a place to visit as a beginner diver as well as some sites for the more experienced divers needing a challenge. You can customise your trip to include enhancing your skills with tailor made teaching packages available onboard. When visiting British Virgin Islands you will need passports with at least 6 months validity on entry, a spare page for a stamp and you must check with your home country's government website about visa requirements.

Wonderful diving, great food on the island, and beautiful landscapes make this a Caribbean gem to dive and stay at.

It was good. Not my favorite diving destination but we did see some rare gems like octopus, seahorses, and spotted Eagle rays. Some dives were boring with lower visibility but most were good with a few amazing dives on the Rhône wreck.

Diving Virgin Islands in February on the BVI Aggressor

  • 8.4 Very good

Reef not as vibrant as in some other areas of the Caribbean. Not as much marine life.

Diving Virgin Islands in August on the BVI Aggressor

Absolutely beautiful views, sunsets, and diving

It was warm easy diving. Lots of coral sea fans and fish. Not a lot of sharks. We did see a few at carrot shoal on the last day but they were small.

It was the worst Diving that I’ve done in a long time. If I’m being very honest, the conditions were rotten, but the Sea Life wasn’t much and the coral was bleached out. The conditions were horrible, but the staff made it as good as could be.

We’re here to help, 24/7.

Live Aboard Charters: Multi-Days & Nights

How to charter a luxury yacht for multi-days or a “live aboard”.

Our Cabo Yacht Life Live Aboard yacht charters guide below outlines the process of chartering a luxury yacht and details the costs involved. Yachts can be booked for several days and nights with 5-star service standards. It should cover everything you need to know about luxury yacht charter. However, if you have any further questions, please  contact us.

How Do I Charter a Live Aboard Yacht?

There are a few key steps you need to follow when thinking about booking luxury Live Aboard yacht charters:

  • Think about where you want to go around Los Cabos, La Paz, or Baja California Sur.
  • Narrow down your requirements. What is your budget? How many people do you want to invite? Do you want adventure, romance or both?
  • Get an idea of the type of yachts you like.
  • Let the VIP booking expert find you the most suitable yachts, and pick your favorite.
  • Start planning: the booking professional will arrange your itinerary and any other details.

How Much Does It Cost for Live Aboard Yacht Charters?

You’ll usually see two rates for charter yachts: the high season and low season rate. But that’s not all that you need to budget for. You need to factor in:

  • The running costs of the charter, which usually ends up being 25-30% of the charter depending on your group and itinerary.
  • It’s called the Advanced Provisioning Allowance.
  • IVA or local cruising taxes, that can vary from 0% to 22%.
  • Delivery costs and/or redelivery cost, if you want to charter the vessel away from her home port area of Cabo San Lucas or far from current bookings in place. This doesn’t always apply, so check with our VIP Live Aboard professional at [email protected] .
  • A security deposit. This is mainly requested if an event is part of Live Aboard yacht charters standard. However, depending on the make-up of the group, we will require this on the contract due to high demand.
  • A crew tip is offered at your discretion but in planning the overall cost, this is something to consider. We explain tips in more detail below.

What is the Advanced Provisioning Allowance?

Advanced provisioning allowance (APA) is the extra fee that you pay in advance to cover the cost of provisions for Live Aboard yacht charters. It helps to think of the advanced provisioning allowance as like opening a petty cash account for your captain and chef, because it’s the simplest way of tracking charter expenses while you’re on board.

The APA allows the Captain and Crew to fully prepare and customize the experience to exactly how you want to live on board. A “preference sheet” will be prepared in detail between you and your bookings professional and sent to the Captain in good time for him to prepare the yacht for your arrival.

The captain will oversee all the purchases made before and during your charter. He will be responsible for ensuring the crew stay within budget and will provide receipts and expense accounts upon request. All expenses will be charged at cost and at the end of your charter you’ll receive an itemized breakdown of all expenditures.

FAQs: Live Aboard Yacht Charters Etiquette

How should I interact with the crew?

The crew are valued employees, ensuring Live Aboard yacht charters are run safely, operates smoothly and that service levels are optimized for you and your guests.

Can I invite friends on the yacht?

You’re encouraged to entertain guests during your charter, but please let the bookings expert know if you’re thinking about inviting friends on board. If you give the crew plenty of time to plan, you’ll have the very best experience.

Can I hold a party on board?

Some of our Live Aboard yacht charters are able to hold events on board, but they will need to adhere to regulations as to how many guests can be there at any one time. The yacht may request a security deposit, in case of any damage caused during the charter.

The number of guests for events varies with the size of yacht, flag registry rules, insurance levels and our company’s comfort level.

Can I bring staff in addition to my guests to stay on board?

Any essential staff such as nannies or physicians may be accommodated if the yacht has suitable cabins available for them. This is requested on a case-by-case basis. The yacht crew will ensure that the staff are given any necessary safety training and advise them on how service works on the yacht.

FAQs: Helpful Advice

Can I bring my pet?

Our Live Aboard yacht charters are not set up to accommodate pets on any charters.

What happens while the crew clean?

The crew are very skilled at making sure everything is shipshape. However, they always appreciate it when guests take their morning coffee on the sundeck, for example, as it gives them a chance to make sure your stateroom is made up and ready.

What happens if I have a problem?

Every member of the crew wants you to have the very best experience. But if you have any questions or concerns, a quick chat with the Captain is the best thing to do.

Are any areas off-limits?

Please don’t enter the crew areas without permission. The Captain or host/hostess will give you a safety briefing upon embarkation, which will go over how to stay safe on board. For your own safety, take the time to familiarize yourself with all the information provided about lifejackets and the lifeboat drill.

Do I have to take my shoes off?

Please make sure you’re barefoot or wearing socks during the charter or bring slippers. Decks are notoriously fragile and dents and scuffs on the well-polished wood or stains on carpets are a big no-no. Similarly, street shoes can damage a yacht’s antique carpets or custom flooring. Our crews will provide a shoe basket at the end of the gangway to keep your favorite shoes safe.

What luggage should I use?

Soft luggage that can be easily folded up and stowed away is the best option for packing. That’s because although guest staterooms are beautifully designed, storage is always an issue. Hardshell luggage is difficult to store at the best of times.

FAQs: Advance Provisioning Allowance

Where and when do I need to pay the APA?

The APA of 30% is due at the same time as your final charter payment, so roughly one month before you set sail. The transfer is made directly to Cabo Yacht Life so you’re in the best of hands. Your Live Aboard yacht charters bookings professional will provide all the necessary bank details ahead of time.

What happens if the APA doesn’t cover all expenses?

Live Aboard yacht charters cost estimation is fairly accurate, but there’s always a chance that you might decide to blow the budget while at sea. Should your outgoings exceed the initial payment, you can top up the APA in cash while you’re on board, or by wire transfer to the Cabo Yacht Life U.S. bank account or other payment options. The captain will keep you updated throughout the trip, and if there are any outstanding costs, you’ll need to settle up before disembarking.

What if we don’t use the full APA?

If there’s any credit remaining on the APA account at the end of the charter, the captain will communicate with the bookings and accounting departments to issue a refund. You will receive the outstanding balance after you leave the yacht by wire transfer or your preferred method within five working days after the charter.

Does the APA apply to all Live Aboard charters?

Yes. When it comes to luxury Live Aboard yacht charters, the APA is usually applied as standard. Simple and straightforward, the APA is the easiest way to keep track of your outgoings while at sea.

“Absolute Perfection!” From start to finish, our experience with this organization was absolutely perfect. They were professional, polite, friendly, accommodating and they facilitated an  amazing   experience ! We booked a 4 hour sunset trip to the arch, and surrounding areas for 5 people. With 4 young women, you can only imagine how many photos we wanted to take. Janett assisted us by taking SO many wonderful photos, telling us how to pose, capturing our best angles and all the while supplying us with the perfect drinks to keep the party going! Captain Juan was a gentleman, and clearly knew how to navigate to the best spots around. They had a stand up paddle board for us to use, as well as different things to float on in the water. Janett provided us with some excellent food that kept us energized for all the fun! The entire trip with Cabo Yacht Life was a delight, and for any future trips I may take to Cabo, they would be my go to activity! — Trip Advisor, 5-stars
“Amazing charter experience!” From the moment I inquired until we stepped off the boat I received the most amazing service. Joseph was so accommodating especially because there was a hurricane on my initial charter date. He made sure to communicate after the storm and made sure to get us out on the boat the next day, safely might I add. When we got to the boat the experience was so amazing. Eva and Juan were both so friendly and attentive. Eva took some amazing pictures of my friends and I. Unfortunately, several of us became motion sick however, they immediately accommodated us and made sure we were good. The boat was clean and I still enjoyed myself. Eva even used her phone for the music we liked to ensure I as the birthday girl could use my phone for pictures and videos. I would highly recommend you use them for your private charter needs. — Trip Advisor, 5-stars

13 cheapest liveaboard sailboats that are good, key features of a good liveaboard sailboat, classic liveaboard sailboat models, affordable liveaboard sailboats.

When looking for an affordable yet reliable liveaboard sailboat , there are several important features to consider. These can greatly affect your overall experience and satisfaction with your chosen boat.

Layout and space : On a liveaboard sailboat, space and layout are crucial. You'll want a boat that offers efficient use of space, a comfortable living area, a functional galley, and adequate storage. Generally, 25 to 35 feet in length is the ideal size range for a liveaboard.

Sailing performance : Even if you plan to live aboard primarily , sailing performance should still be a priority. Consider its ability to handle light winds, heavy winds, and everything in between. Your boat should be able to handle various sea conditions and be easily maneuvered. It should be versatile enough for various wind conditions and sea states.

Hull design : The hull design of your sailboat will affect its stability and performance in the water. Look for a design that offers a good balance between comfort, safety, and speed. A full-keel or modified full-keel design provides stability and tracking in rough seas, while a fin keel offers better maneuverability in tight spaces like harbors and marinas.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

liveaboard sailboat vacations

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

liveaboard sailboat vacations

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

liveaboard sailboat vacations

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

liveaboard sailboat vacations

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

liveaboard sailboat vacations

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

liveaboard sailboat vacations

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

liveaboard sailboat vacations

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Ny skipper cole brauer overcame broken ribs, deteriorating boat to become first us woman to sail solo around the world.

She sailed her way into the history books.

A 29-year-old skipper from New York has become the first US woman to sail solo around the world.

Cole Brauer, from Long Island, tearfully reunited with her family in A Coruña, Spain, on Thursday after a gruelling 30,000-mile journey that took 130 days.

The 5-foot-2 trailblazer placed second out of 16 in the daring Global Solo Challenge, which kicked off in October off the coast of the port city, located in northwestern Spain.

“I can’t believe it guys. I sailed around the world,” Brauer said as she approached the finish line in an Instagram live video. “That’s crazy. That’s absolutely crazy. This is awesome. Let’s just do it again. Let’s keep going!”

She was the only woman in the event and also the youngest competitor. She sailed into A Coruña to a cheering crowd just a day before International Women’s Day on March 8.

Cole Brauer, a skipper from New York, completed a solo trip around the world on her sailboat.

“It would be amazing if there was just one girl that saw me and said, ‘Oh, I can do that too,’” Brauer  told NBC  of her history-making effort. More than half of the other competitors has dropped out as of Thursday.

Brauer’s  sailing profile on Global Solo Challenge’s website  said her goal has always been to be “the First American Woman to Race Around the World.”

“With this goal, I hope to show that this very male-dominated sport and community can become more open and less ‘traditional,'” it reads.

The East Hampton native didn’t even take up sailing until she decamped to the University of Hawai’i for college in 2014, her profile explained.

liveaboard sailboat vacations

“I grew up on a nature preserve, wandering through the tall grass of the creek and playing in the mud watching the tide come in,” she said of her childhood in Suffolk County.

“When I moved to Hawaii for university, all I wanted was to get out on the water. Feel at home. Accessing the sailing community in Hawaii was the logical step,” she added.

Brauer turned pro after college, and started seriously chasing the idea of a round-the-world race after her mentor, Tim Fetsch, sent her a book by record-setting female skipper Dame Ellen MacArthur.

By the time she set sail on her global adventure on Oct. 29, Brauer was already a record-setter: Last summer, she became the first woman to win the Bermuda One-Two race, the Providence Journal reported at the time.

Brauer is the first US woman to accomplish the feat.

Brauer documented the treacherous Global Solo Challenge for her 459,000 Instagram followers from aboard her beloved 40-foot monohull racing boat, First Light.

Like her pint-sized, 100-pound owner, First Light has a quicksilver edge – and is only large enough to typically hold a one- or two-person crew.

The race path took Brauer down the western coast of Africa before she sailed into the Southern Ocean in early December, where she’d cement second place in the challenge.

She often showed fans her peaceful mornings and on-board workout sessions in the Atlantic Ocean.

“Cole wants to prove you can go around the world and watch Netflix every once in a while, and wear your pajamas,” her media manager, Lydia Mullan,  told the New York Times  of the realistic look at boat life.

Brauer finished the challenge in second place.

“As for her mental health, she’s really creating a space in her routine for herself, to create that joy she hasn’t seen in other sailors,” Mullan added.

But even Brauer’s tenacious outlook at times gave way for the hardships of living at sea.

In December, she suffered a rib injury when she was violently thrown across her boat because of broaching — when a boat unintentionally changes direction toward the wind — in the rough waters near Africa.

Despite the injury, Brauer said she had no other choice but to power through the pain and keep sailing.

“There’s no option at that point. You’re so far away from land that there’s no one who can rescue you or come and grab you,” she told the “Today” show Thursday. “You kind of just need to keep moving along and keep doing everything.”

Brauer’s grit during the journey recalled her time in Hawaii, when she borrowed from her background as a varsity soccer player, track and field runner, and cheerleader to thrive on the UH team — all while juggling her studies in nutrition science and a full-time job.

“It’s more strategy than anything,” she told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in May 2016, when she captained the four-time national championship-qualifying team.

Brauer told NBC on Sunday that solo sailors “have to be able to do everything.”

“You have to be able to get up even when you’re so exhausted and you have to be able to fix everything on the boat.”

Brauer took on the challenge on her boat, "First Light," which battled rough waves throughout the journey.

She reached the Pacific Ocean on December 29 and traveled past the southernmost point of South America and back into the Atlantic on January 27.

As she missed the holidays back home, Brauer decorated First Light with decorations fit for the occasion — pumpkins and ghosts for Halloween, a small felt Christmas tree, and broke out a dress and champagne for New Year’s Day.

Brauer also told the outlet that she started to feel the boat “deteriorating” and “starting to break down” as she made her final push through the Atlantic.

She then deliberately slowed her arrival time near the finish line to coordinate with the “first light” — when light is first seen in the morning — in honor of her boat’s namesake.

“I’m glad that out of all times, I’m coming in at first light,” Brauer said. “It’s only necessary.”

As she crossed the finish line, Brauer held two flares above her head to signal an end to her over four-month-long campaign.

“Amazing finish!!!! So stoked! Thank you to everyone that came together and made this process possible,” she wrote on Instagram.

Following her second-place finish, Brauer received a fresh cappuccino and croissant, the breakfast she had been craving for months while at sea, she said.

French skipper Philippe Delamare, who started the race a month before Brauer, won the Global Solo Challenge on Feb. 24. Start dates were staggered based on performance characteristics.

A highlight of Brauer’s return to dry land will be reuniting with her mom, dad, and younger sister.

“They think I’m nuts,” Brauer told the Providence Journal of her parents’ response to her big sailing dream.

“I think that they’re much more proud of me now, especially because they’re starting to realize that this 10-year adventure I’ve been on isn’t just me gallivanting around the world…not really fulfilling what my mind and body was made to do, which is what my parents always wanted me to do,” she added.

Now, Brauer is joining a storied lineage of esteemed female skippers who came before her.

Polish skipper Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz was the first woman to sail solo around the world, traveling almost 36,000 miles from 1976 to 1978.

British sailor Ellen MacArthur became the fastest solo sailor to sail around the world in 2005 when she traveled over 31,000 miles in 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes 33 seconds.

Brauer hopes to serve as the same inspiration as the sailing pioneers.

“I push so much harder when someone is like, ‘you can’t do that.’ And I’m like, ‘OK, watch me,’” she told NBC. “It would be amazing if there was one other girl who saw me and said, “Oh, I can do that too.”

Americans whose yacht was hijacked in Grenada were likely thrown overboard and died, police say

Two Americans are presumed dead after they vanished from their yacht in Grenada , leaving behind evidence of a bloody struggle, police in nearby St. Vincent and the Grenadines said Monday.

While loved ones of Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry are hopeful that the American retirees and sailing enthusiasts could still turn up alive, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Superintendent Junior Simmons offered a more somber assessment.

"Based on the investigation thus far, it is presumed that Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel are deceased," Simmons said in a video statement Monday afternoon .

Kathy Brandel, front left, and Ralph Hendry, front right, with family.

Hours earlier, police in Grenada said there's still hope to find the couple.

But Royal Grenada Police Commissioner Don McKenzie also said he's offering “condolences” to the family of the two American boaters, who were most likely “disposed of” at sea by escaped prisoners. McKenzie said there's a “low probability” Brandel and Henry might be alive.

Three accused criminals escaped from jail on Feb. 18 before they "commandeered" the couple's boat, called Simplicity, and headed north, McKenzie said. Police have said the escapees boarded the boat while it was docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

"They headed to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Information suggests that while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants," McKenzie told reporters.

Asked whether investigators have an idea where the "missing" Americans might be, McKenzie flat-out said, "No."

"We have nothing conclusive to say that the individuals are dead," he added. "We still hold out hope that, in spite of what might be a low probability, they will turn up alive somewhere, that they're alive."

Simmons in St. Vincent and the Grenadines left little doubt of his opinion in the probe “into the disappearance and presumed death of two United States citizens ... Ralph Hendry and his common law wife Kathy Brandel.”

In an interview that aired Monday on NBC Nightly News, Rob Maher, a friend of the couple who acted as their emergency contact, said that the situation was “like a bad Hollywood movie.”

“It’s hard to think of their last moments with the idea that they might have been thrown overboard alive. It’s difficult to conceive for a friend,” he added.

Couple's sons are in the Caribbean

The couple’s sons called the pair’s disappearance “the rarest of the rare occurrences.”

Brandel’s son, Nick Buro, and Hendry’s son, Bryan Hendry, told NBC Washington that they first learned the couple were missing after U.S. consular officials in Barbados contacted them.

A good Samaritan who found the pair’s abandoned boat contacted the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , whose flag was flying on the mast, and word made it to the two sons, too.

They said they were told the couple vanished after three men escaped from police custody Feb. 18 and boarded their boat in Grenada the next day, Buro said.

Buro said they were told an “altercation of violence took place" on the boat, adding that there was evidence of the violence and that the couple’s possessions were "strewn around all over." Items had also been stolen.

McKenzie said, "What I can say to the family is my condolences and we are still hoping for what I consider a positive outcome, which is we still have the hope that our worst-case scenario will not be a reality."

The scene on the couple's boat was "consistent with signs of violence," Simmons in St. Vincent and the Grenadines said.

"Several items were strewn on the deck and in the cabin, and a red substance that resembled blood was seen on board," he said. "There was no discovery of bodies on board the yacht."

The escapees were caught by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday and are in custody there, according to Buro and officials.

Police told Buro that they have questioned the suspects multiple times, and he said the family expects charges soon.

Buro and Hendry are in the Caribbean and have been speaking with authorities, including the St. Vincent and the Grenadines police and coast guard, and they expressed their appreciation.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department said it is aware of the reports involving two citizens missing in the vicinity of Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines but did not identify the couple. The official added that U.S. authorities are coordinating with local law enforcement officials as they carry out their search efforts.

“We are monitoring the situation and seeking additional information,” the spokesperson said. “The Department of State has no higher priority than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad. We stand ready to provide appropriate assistance to U.S. citizens in need and to their families.”

Life on the water

The couple met in Virginia and have been married for 27 years. They raised the boys together in the state, where they lived until 2013, selling their home in Alexandria to trade it in for Simplicity and life on the water.

"They wanted to see the world. They wanted to experience life. They wanted to see what the world had to offer outside of their small window of living in one place and being mobile and being able to have a different adventure every day — that’s like the definition of living," Buro said.

Buro said that the family has always been close and that they talk often. He considers Ralph Hendry his father and Bryan Hendry his brother, and he said he knows Hendry feels the same way about him and Brandel.

The couple “lived with a sense of wonder and love,” Hendry said.

“They loved immersing themselves in different cultures and meeting people and spreading their love wherever they could,” he said.

Buro echoed his stepbrother’s sentiments.

“You’ll never meet more beautiful people than Kathy and Ralph,” Buro said. “They were there for people when they needed it most, and I just, they’re my inspiration for everything, and I can’t express how much I love them, and I know everybody else who knows them feels the same way.”

The couple had been planning the trip down to Grenada — their first to the Caribbean island — for “years and years and years, training themselves, preparing the boat, preparing themselves ... to make the trip,” Hendry said.

It was going to be a “very long trip, not to be taken lightly,” and the couple felt they had “prepared themselves adequately,” Hendry said.

They made the voyage down with the Salty Dawg Sailing Association, and everyone arrived safely, Buro said.

Bob Osborn, the association's president, said the situation was upsetting and tragic.

“In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this,” he said in a statement.

Yacht 'was their home'

Buro thinks his mother and stepfather could still be alive.

“We still think there’s a chance that they’re out there," he said. Because the investigation continues and St. Vincent and the Grenadines police were "quick to apprehend the suspects and are searching," there is hope.

"We still hope that they are OK and that we can bring them back," Buro said.

He said that the entire situation "is something that is completely unexpected" and that they are trying to understand the "senseless act of violence against two people that were just living their lives in their home."

Buro said the couple worked hard on their dream and had become seasoned sailors. Simplicity “was their home,” he said.

He said the couple’s top priorities were always safety and security, “to make sure everything they did was safe and was going to keep them safe.”

“To have that turn out in a way where something out of their control took that away from them is what’s so horrific about this and so sad, because they were just, this is just something that they’ve always wanted to do, and they did it, and it’s just, it breaks our hearts,” Buro said.
