Description

The J/133 is the largest model in the long production line of J/Boats. It is a boat for those who want to get maximum space and comfort on Board while retaining all the usual J/Boats racing qualities. Characteristically, one of the options of the interior layout of a yacht involves a "prestigious" dvojkotva layout with two individual latrines (there are, of course, and the more familiar version with three cabins). Very sharp bow waterline in combination with flat-bottomed stern allow the boat to easily reach the surfing mode, moving with high speeds. It is well balanced rudder and a lack of desire to go to the drive in the gusts allow you to control the boat literally with the fingertips.

By the time the spray had settled in the wake of the 2004 Boat of the Year contest, it was clear to me that among the growing fleet of sailboats being offered for the dual purposes of racing and cruising, the J/133 was definitely the showstopper. Even though I spend much more time cruising than racing, I like boats that are meant to sail efficiently, and I found in the J/133, a big sister to the popular J/105, technology and simplicity elegantly blended in pursuit of harnessing a breeze.

The J/133 is light and responsive. It has a fine entry, a flat canoe body, and modest beam that trims down to an even leaner waterplane. The well-matched bulb keel and spade rudder deliver forgiving steering characteristics as well as surprising tracking ability for appendages with such high-aspect ratios. Even as we noticed some binding in the rudderstock bearing on the prototype boat, the J/Boat team was already in the process of fixing the problem.

TPI Inc., which builds the J/133, was among the first production boatbuilders to implement resin-infusion laminating techniques, and it employs its patented SCRIMP system in the manufacture of many large composite structures in addition to boats. The big plus for the boat buyer isn’t just the precision repeatability that such a process makes possible; the infused resin also fills the slots in the balsa core, reducing the incidence of voids and producing a laminate that’s more resistant to water damage.

I like the layout below, which blends the requirements of a sea boat with those of a comfortable coastal cruiser. The modest beam and easy-to-navigate cabin sole give the accommodations a sailboat feel, the U-shaped galley to starboard is anything but minimal, and the adjacent nav station to port is a main feature of the saloon rather than an afterthought. The two settees that flank the cabin table need only lee cloths to make them excellent sea berths, while the cabins forward and aft offer double berths for times when the boat’s on an even keel.

Lifting cabin-sole boards, peering into the bilge, and looking in lockers, I found evidence of sound engineering practices and adherence to the systems-installation guidelines of the American Boat & Yacht Council.

A fast, agile, big-mainsail sloop, like other high-performance Js, the J/133 has a retractable sprit. It’s both simple to use and a real turbo boost for those cruising in areas like Long Island Sound and Chesapeake Bay during light, summertime conditions. An asymmetric spinnaker is easier to handle than a conventional chute and ups the performance and fun factors for a shorthanded crew.

Navtec rod rigging is standard, as is the Hall Spars carbon-fiber mast that’s less than 65 feet tall, allowing the boat to duck into the Intracoastal Waterway. A shoal-draft alternative to the standard 7.5-foot keel will make that option more appealing and ease the boat’s passage in other shallow-water cruising grounds.

The few weaknesses I discovered can probably be addressed through modifications at the builder’s or with after-purchase add-ons. The boat we sailed lacked a bow roller, necessary for efficient anchor deployment and retrieval on a plumb-stem boat such as this, and, proving the J/133’s raceboat inclinations, the toerail didn’t extend aft of the mast. Anyone with extended racing or cruising ambitions should bear in mind the limited tankage–50 gallons each of fuel and water.

Strong enough to go offshore but also fast and fun in all-too-common light air, the J/133 should appeal to those who both race and cruise with smaller crews and shorter time frames. Its comfortable accommodations provide the amenities and privacy to make fast, efficient, performance cruising a real pleasure for two couples.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

43m Pershing fast motor yacht Chorusline for sale

The 43.3-metre fast motor yacht Chorusline is newly listed for sale with Charles Carveles of Edmiston .

Delivered from the renowned Italian builder of fast yachts, Pershing , in 2019, this Pershing 140 is constructed of aluminium and was fully repainted in 2023. Her design is by Fulvio De Simoni with interior by Italprojects and naval architecture by Ferretti Engineering Department.

Chorusline is described by the broker as "like new" as she has only ever been used as a dayboat and her beds never slept in.

Accommodation for a party of 10 guests is arranged over four cabins, comprising a master suite, a double cabin and two twins with additional Pullman berths. There are quarters for a crew of seven in four cabins.

Presently, the main-deck owner's suite is used as an entertainment space with a dining room, bar and cinema room, connected to the saloon. Four 2,600hp engines, with less than 700 hours on them, give the 380GT low-draft, yacht for sale a top speed of 38 knots and the ability to accelerate from rest to 35 knots in under a minute.
