As we begin 2024, we thought it a good opportunity to look back at 2023 to see how the industry faired and whether there have been any changes to salary, tips, and working conditions.

The good news is that things have got better! Since the pandemic, the Superyacht industry has seen significant growth the industry has grown significantly over the last couple of years .

As the number of Superyachts being built increases, so does the demand for crew; there has never been a better time to enter the industry.

Typically, the entry-level salary for a Deckhand and Steward/ess ranges between €2,000 and €3,500, rising to €4,000+ for more senior roles. A Captain can make €10,000+ per month, depending on the size of the Superyacht!

Moreover, as you’ll be living onboard the yacht, there are no living expenses to worry about. Your meals are prepared by the Chef onboard, too, and you rarely need to buy groceries or toiletries.

We can’t talk about Superyacht Salary without mentioning tips. The majority of Superyacht owners charter their yachts as the ultimate holiday experience! A Superyacht does not come cheap, with some chartering for One Million per week! Guests normally leave a tip and around 10% of the charter fee, which is shared equally among the crew. It is not unheard of for a Deckhand or Steward/ess to receive a €5,000 tip after a week’s trip!

How much do you make working on a Superyacht?

In short, your salary will depend on the role you work in on the Superyacht, in conjunction with its size; however, the average salary is €2,500 per month (most boats pay in Euros rather than pounds).

Several other factors will determine Superyacht crew salary, too, including previous experience, qualifications, and extra skills (such as Dinghy Instructor, Carpenter, and Divemaster, to name a few).

Whether the yacht is chartered or privately owned will all contribute to your monthly pay packet; your basic salary will be the same whether you work on a charter yacht or a private boat, though on a charter, you will generally receive tips; this usually around 10% of your monthly salary, or it can range between €1,500 to €5,000+ .

Due to needing a firm understanding of working on deck, the First Officer normally starts their career as a Deckhand and progresses from there.

Superyacht Bosun salary – €3,200 to €5,000+

Otherwise known as the Senior Deckhand, the Bosun is the ‘line manager’ of all Deckhands on the boat. The responsibilities of the Bosun are to manage and maintain the exterior of the yacht to the highest order.

Because of the demands of the lifestyle, compensation is good and you have minimal living expenses on board.

Benefits and Time Off

Because so many jobs are seasonal and may occur in different countries and locations, benefits offered to yacht crew vary widely. But it is not uncommon for crew to be offered health and accident insurance and a flight to the vessel. Living on board, you’ll get food, rooming (usually shared), basic toiletries, uniforms, and laundry. Yachts with a longer view may offer additional training to long-term prospects.

Most crew jobs have an employment contract that meets the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC). Training & Certificates

Two key certifications are required for yacht crew. Employers look for the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers) and the ENG1 (Seafarer Medical Certificate). Insurers generally require crew to have these two certifications or the equivalent.

The ENG1 isn’t a class. It’s a medical exam to ensure that the crew is physically fit to serve at sea and has no underlying conditions that may arise far from help. It’s best for prospective crew to secure the ENG1 before investing more time and money training.

STCW is a week-long class on the basics of onboard safety. This includes hands-on modules covering personal survival, fire safety, first aid and CPR, accident prevention, and security awareness. It needs to be refreshed every five years.

Shared, Hybrid, and Crossover Jobs

Larger vessels will have more defined duties and specific areas of responsibility. But smaller yachts may want the crew to have different roles in different situations. For example, a hybrid job description may read “3rd Engineer/Steward” and describe a role in engineering when the boat is empty but on inside crew when passengers are on board.

When hiring or seeking jobs be prepared to look for creative crossover skill sets to meet the needs of the vessel.

Extra Skills and Duties

Any extra skills outside the regular duties makes crew more attractive. From stewards who can teach yoga, give massages or play cocktail piano to deck crew who know how to water ski, SCUBA dive, or fish, anything that crew can bring to enhance the passenger experience adds value to the employee.

Deckhands (deck) are going to be involved in painting, sanding, and varnish jobs anywhere on the boat.

The deck crew handles most of the exterior operations of the yacht, and runs it. Deck hands and crew keep the boat looking clean and shiny, and handling most vessel operations. This includes driving and operating the yacht, navigation, running all launches and ship’s craft, handling lines, and all maintenance and painting, washing, and shining.

2-Interior (or Inside)

Inside crew are primarily the stewards and housekeepers. Larger vessels will have a dedicated housekeeping staff separate from the stewards, but smaller vessels may not.

Stewards keep the interior clean, do all housekeeping, laundry, food and beverage service, cabin preparation, and anything else needed for the comfort of the passengers.

3-Engineering

Below decks, the engineering department ensures the safe and smooth running of all the ship’s machinery and electronics. Engineers are engine and systems specialists, and there will usually be a dedicated electronics expert. Most engineer jobs require professional training and certification.

Fine dining is a hallmark of the yachting experience, and a full-time galley crew prepares all meals for passengers and crew. The head chef plans the menus and provisions the boat, while junior chefs assist the head chef with meal preparation and keeping the galley spotless.

Yacht Job and Department Details

Departments are all organized in a hierarchy, with a department head reporting to the Captain. The clear chain of command makes for smooth operations, with all communications going up and down ranks. Junior staff will occasionally take instructions from other divisions as all crew is expected to help as needed. A captain or department head may organize staff differently, so reporting structures listed are guidelines only.

All salary ranges are monthly figures and are ranges based on yacht size and crew experience. Senior jobs on larger yachts have more responsibility than the same job title on yachts with smaller crews. Experienced crew are very desirable and can expect more pay for their positions.

Listed responsibilities are not exhaustive, and different yachts may allocate some jobs to different positions.

The Captain

The captain of the vessel is the overall decision maker for the yacht in all situations, including the safety of the vessel. The owner should leave the Captain responsible for operational decisions about hiring and staff and operating the ship. To become a captain requires years of experience and training, and a broad set of skills including yacht operations, personnel management, budgeting and finance. The captain works directly with the owner and owner’s representative, if the captain is not also acting as the representative.

On an organization chart, the Captain is usually placed in the deck division, but the Captain is always the senior-most crew on the yacht and all division heads report to the Captain.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for all navigation and running the yacht.
  • Senior decision maker on all crew hiring.
  • Manage repairs, refits, and yard work.
  • Manage budgets and accounting. On larger yachts, this task ends more on the Purser, but the captain is always responsible.
  • Ensure all paperwork, clearances, and legal requirements are completed.
  • Primary contact with the owner or charter parties.

Reports to: The yacht owner

Salary Range: $6,000 to $22,000

The deckhands handle all the outside responsibilities of the ship, including cleaning and maintenance of the yacht and all the ship’s vessels and toys on board. Deck crew will have significant contact with passengers in this role, operating launches and delivering guests to and from shore and handling the toys.

All deck crew have watch responsibilities on passage, and daily responsibilities keeping the yacht pristine and clean. They will also do line handling and secure the yacht.

Deck department : Chief Mate/First Officer

The Chief Mate or First Officer is the second in command of the vessel, and left in charge when the Captain is not on board. The first mate has the requisite skills to stand in for the captain and run the yacht if needed and usually acts as the division head of the deck team.

The seamanship skills needed are similar to the Captain’s position.

  • Primary safety officer for the yacht and all passengers and crew.
  • Supervise and manage all operations on deck.
  • Bridge watches on passage.
  • Passage planning and navigation.

There may be additional mates on larger vessels, these 2nd, 3rd, etc. mates have similar responsibilities on rotation. But the first mate is senior and always second in command.

Reports to: Captain

Salary Range: $4,000 to $9,500 (First mate)

Second and more junior mates may earn $2,000 to $4,000

Deck department : Bosun

The Bosun is the senior deckhand and manages the junior hands on board. This will usually be the most experienced hand on board.

  • Organizing all operations on deck.
  • Coordinating the use, storing and launching of the ship’s boats, toys, and equipment.
  • Managing the passerelle, watching passenger safety.
  • Contact point for guest service on boats, toys, and trips to shore.

Reports to: First mate

Salary Range: $3,000 to $5,000

Deck department : Deckhands

Deckhands are constantly busy with maintenance, cleaning, polishing, and assisting guests as needed. They will assist other departments as needed or given special duties.

  • Daily cleaning of the yacht’s exterior.
  • Painting, varnishing, polishing.
  • Line handling.
  • Launching and operating dinghies and tenders.
  • Repairs and carpentry.
  • Helping guests as needed – everything from handling baggage and gear to embarking and disembarking.

Reports to: Bosun

Salary range: $1,300 to $3,000

Though every position on a yacht is service-oriented, the interior or inside crew provides the primary customer service. They will interact the most with the passengers daily, and they’re directly responsible for the quality of their experience on board.

Interior department : the Purser

The purser is the chief financial officer of the yacht and handles all the financial operations on board. Accounting, purchasing, payroll and hiring, and all money matters end up with the Purser. This is a senior staff position, and may be the interior department head. Smaller yachts may eliminate the purser’s job and add it to the captain’s and other senior staff duties.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Accounting and bookkeeping for all financial transactions.
  • Human resources and payroll.
  • Handling logistics for all departments related to purchasing.
  • Managing contracts.
  • Event coordination, including off yacht bookings and payments.
  • Primary administration of the boat’s business paperwork.
  • Inventory and supply management.

Salary Range: $4,000 to $8,000

Interior department : The Chief Steward/ess

The chief steward or stewardess has primary responsibility for all service roles inside. Food and drink service, cabin preparation, and anything to do with helping the passengers be more comfortable and enjoy their stay. The chief steward will be inside crew with several years of experience.

The chief steward manages the interior staff, setting and enforcing vessel service standards. The chief steward ensures the crew delivers a five-star hospitality experience.

Chief Steward Responsibilities:

  • Scheduling and training junior crew for meal and drink service and cabin preparation.
  • Primary contact with guests for meals and drinks.
  • Sommelier and wine service.
  • Coordinate with the galley for meals and presentation.
  • Decorate the interior, from flower arrangement to table settings.
  • Arrange onshore activities and outings.

Reports to: Captain or Purser, depending on the yacht

Salary Range: $4,000 to $8,500

Stewards/Stewardesses

The stewards and stewardesses are the primary guest service staff. They will work closely with guests and passengers, and have daily contact with them as they meet most of their needs while on board.

Steward Responsibilities:

  • Food and drink service.
  • Room preparation and turndown service.
  • Cleaning, polishing, housekeeping, and inside maintenance.
  • Cabin detailing.
  • Laundry, pressing, and folding.
  • Help with outings, trips, debarkations.

Reports to: Chief Steward

Salary Range: $1,500 to $4,500

Housekeeping

Larger yachts may have a dedicated housekeeping and laundry staff. This will be part of the inside crew, under either the purser or the head steward. There may be a senior housekeeper, if there are more than one housekeeping crew on board.

Responsibilities are the cleaning and laundry portions of the steward’s job, and a laundry steward may spend most of her time inside the ship’s laundry.

An experienced Head of Housekeeping may earn from $4,500 to $7,000, while a Laundry Steward typically earns from $2,500 to $3,500.

Food service requirements on any yacht are high. Whether it’s a privately owned vessel or a charter, the expectations are always for top tier food service, with a variety of meals planned for the requirements of every passenger. Chefs and cooks prepare all meals on board for passengers and crew, but sometimes other interior crew may help with prep work or cleanup.

Smaller yachts have smaller galley crews, but the largest vessels may have an executive chef and several sous chefs. All chef positions require formal culinary training and experience, but cook positions are often entry level. Promotion from cook to chef is unusual without additional training.

Galley department : the Head / Executive Chef

On larger yachts, an Executive Chef will run the entire galley with the help of sous chefs and cooks. With an Executive Chef, there’s an expectation that the food and menus will be on a level with Michelin star-rated restaurants.

The executive chef brings a thorough understanding of food preparation and presentation, and moves food preparation past creative up to artistic. Job responsibilities are similar to a chef, but the job demands and the required experience and education are much higher.

Salary range: $7,000 to $11,000

The chef has overall responsibility for all meals on the yacht, from provisioning in remote places to hygiene and good safety. If there’s only one chef, she’s the head of the galley crew. Finding the best provisions in far away locations and making the best of local food availability is a major part of the job.

  • Planning a delicious and varied menu for passengers.
  • Sourcing all food and arranging transport to the yacht.
  • Maintaining and operating within the galley budget.
  • Preparing passenger meals with professional presentation and style.
  • Cleaning and maintaining galley and galley equipment.
  • Deliver menus and meals on time, while running an organized and spotless galley.

Galley department : Sous Chef

The sous chefs assist the chef in all aspects of running the galley, and may have independent assignments to plan and guest and crew meals. While not primarily responsible for provisioning, the sous chef will help with food selection, menu preparation, and planning. A sous chef must have formal culinary training.

Reports to: Head chef

Salary Range: $3,500 – $6,000.

Galley department : The Cook

Cooks may be entry-level positions or experienced, but do not require formal gastronomy education. They will assist the chef and sous chefs, cooking meals and dishes for guests and crew, helping with provisioning, and keeping the galley neat.

  • Assist with provisioning and buying high-quality food from local sources.
  • Follow all food handling and safety guidelines.
  • Assist the head chef as needed, taking direction and guidance.
  • Prepare guest and crew meals as required.
  • Staying on top of galley inventories and supplies.

Salary Range: $2,500 to $3,500

Engineering

The engineering department keeps the yacht and all its systems working. Whether it’s the engines, electronics, air conditioning, or the plumbing – it’s up to engineering to keep it running.

There is considerable overlap with commercial shipping in the engineering field, as many of the same skills apply. And there is a broader range of qualifications and grades based on the size and power of the vessel. Job ratings may be set by required experience based on tonnage of ship or power of engines, with corresponding levels of pay and responsibility.

Unlike commercial shipping, engineers may get involved in other aspects of running the yacht, like helping with docking and water sports with mechanical toys.

Engineering certifications, training, ratings, experience and licensing are critical to hiring competent engineers, and for engineering crew it’s an important facet of career advancement. This is important for Chief and 2nd Engineers, which are often broken out by MCA (U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency) rating or other international equivalent.

MCA ratings for engineers Commercial and Private Yachts over 24m are:

Y4: Less than 200 Gross Tons and less than 1,500 kW engine power Y3: Less than 500 GT and 3,000 kW Y2: Less than 3,000 GT and 3,000 kW Y1: Less than 3,000 GT and 9,000 kW

There is also an unlimited rating for merchant vessels larger than the Y1 category. For discussing salary and responsibilities, we will include all ratings in one position description, but pay scales with the size of the yacht and any required higher ratings.

Chief Engineer

The chief engineer manages all aspects of keeping the yacht and its systems running. The chief engineer manages all the engineering staff, and directs all maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting and upgrades. This is a management position, but requires extensive hands-on technical experience and knowledge. Chief engineers on large yachts hold an MCA Y1 or Y2, smaller boats will have a lower rated chief and a smaller staff. Check  Jooble.org  to find abroad marine engineer vacancies.

  • Provisioning, shopping, and stocking.
  • Preparing passenger and crew meals.
  • Following instructions and cooking under the direction of others.
  • Galley cleaning.
  • Follow food safety and storage procedures.
  • Food pre-preparation.

Salary Range: $6,000 to $15,000

2nd Engineer

The second engineer is also a highly skilled position requiring a rating or license and several years of experience. This senior level engineer also needs knowledge of how to troubleshoot and maintain all yacht systems.

  • Maintain and manage all engineering operations.
  • Hire, train and supervise all engineers.
  • Project manage all upgrades and retrofits, including managing budgets, contracts, and suppliers.
  • Coordinate maintenance schedule for the entire yacht around the usage and seasonal schedules.
  • Maintain costs and accounting for engineering operations.
  • Design and handle all safety operations.
  • Set and maintain standards for operations and cleanliness in the engine room.

Reports to: Chief engineer

Salary Range: $5,500 – $10,000

OOW (Officer of the Watch) Engineer

The OOW is a junior engineering position, but still licensed. There are two categories of OOW – MEOL (Marine Engine Operator License) and the more junior AEC (Assistant Engine Course). The overall responsibilities are similar, working to support the senior engineers and handle independent assignments. The AEC rating is entry level for licensed crew, but has training and certification.

  • Support the chief in all projects.
  • Maintain a clean, safe engine room.
  • Perform all maintenance, troubleshooting and repair tasks as needed.
  • Support motorized water sports.
  • Occasionally assist with other vessel operations, like line handling.

Reports to: Chief Engineer

Salary Range, MEOL: $4,500 to $6,000 Salary Range, AEC: $2,500 to $3,500

Electronics/Technology Officer (ETO)

The ETO takes responsibility for all audio-visual and information technology on board. Ensuring passengers have access to the internet, movies, television, and music is a primary responsibility. This position carries a fair amount of passenger interaction, and an ETO needs good troubleshooting skills to go with customer service skills.

  • Ensure all audio/visual and entertainment systems are always available for passengers.
  • Assist passengers with personal technology and ship systems as needed.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and upgrades of the network, information, and A/V systems around passenger schedules.
  • Assist other engineers as needed, especially with electronic systems.
  • Contribute as needed with other departments for boat and passenger operations.

Salary Range: $4,000 to $9,000

Junior Engineer

This is a lower or entry level position for someone with engineering skills but without formal licensing or certification. The junior engineer will help with safety and cleanliness, and assist in any engineering tasks as needed. The ability to solve problems and fix things opens this spot for anyone capable and willing to do the job.

  • Help with cleaning, maintenance, and safety functions.
  • Help anywhere needed on the yacht.
  • Assist senior engineers as needed, taking direction and following instructions exactly.
  • Constantly develop skills.

It’s no secret that the impressive yacht crew salaries attract most people into the exclusive yachting world.

Junior deckhands or stewardesses can earn starting salaries of $3000 per month. With a few years of experience and some courses to back you up, this amount moves up towards $4000-$4500 per month!

In order to compile this superyacht crew salary guideline, I have taken 10 of the top yachting platforms and used all of their data, combined with my personal experience, to reach an average salary expectation for each position.

Yacht Captain Salary

  • 20m-30m: $4000-$7500
  • 30m-40m: $5500-$9500
  • 40m-50m: $8000-$15000
  • 50m-70m: $13000-$19000
  • 70m+: $16500+

Requirements of a Yacht Captain

  • Years of experience needed: 3-5 years of experience as Chief Officer/Mate and more than 5 years of experience as a Captain for larger yachts
  • Minimum level of Qualification: 200ton licence which allows you to drive vessels below 200tons

The Captain has the highest level of responsibility onboard the yacht and hence they earn the most out of all the yacht crew salaries.

Captains are accountable for the overall safety of the yacht, crew members and guests.

They also handle daily operations of the yacht, guests, and owner liaison. They deal with management companies, port control, budgets, human resources, and many more tasks and logistics that make the job demanding and stressful.

On top of this, Captains are required to hold high levels of certifications depending on the size of the yacht they are driving.

Yacht Captain salaries can sky rocket with higher levels of qualifications.

If you are looking to become a Yacht Captain one day I recommend looking into the courses required so you can get started with licenses and sea time. It takes time to get there, but when you do it will be worth it.

Chief Officer Yacht Salary

  • 30m-40m: $4000-$6000
  • 40m-50m: $4500-$7500
  • 50m-70m: $5500-$9000
  • 70m+: $8000+

Requirements of a Chief Officer

  • Years of experience needed: 3-5 Years
  • Minimum level of qualification: Officer of the Watch

The Chief Officer is second in command to the Captain and is responsible for carrying out the Captain’s standing orders.

On smaller yachts, the Chief Officer is referred to as the Mate.

The Chief Officer is responsible for carrying out the safety duties onboard and assisting in the bridge with paperwork and navigational planning.

The Chief Officer is also responsible for leading and managing their deck team, ensuring crew are following their duties as well as managing the water sports and guest activities.

The salary of a Chief Officer depends heavily on the license held.

Bosun Yacht Salary

  • Years of experience needed: 2-3 years
  • Minimum level of qualification: Yacht Master Offshore
  • A yacht Bosun salary can vary between $4000 and $6000.

Responsibilities of a Bosun

The Bosun is essentially the Lead Deckhand onboard. A lead deckhand salary on a larger vessel will be similar to that of a bosun salary on a smaller vessel.

This is an opportunity to step up from being a deckhand and gain some experience in a leadership role. This position is in place for larger yachts so that when the Officer is busy with bridge duties, someone is in charge on deck.

Yacht Deckhand Salary

Years of experience needed: 0

  • Minimum level of qualification: None needed, however Power Boat Level 2 and Yacht Master offshore will put you at a great advantage
  • Entry-level yacht crew salaries start at $3000 and can go as high as $4000/$4500.

Responsibilities of a Deckhand

A Deckhand is an entry-level role on a yacht.

You need to spend a few years (or less) as a Deckhand in order to learn and gain experience so that you can step up in the ranks and obtain your licenses.

This role will be very hands-on in maintaining the exterior of the yacht. Duties will include cleaning, polishing, varnishing, sanding, caulking, and any other maintenance work required.

Chief Steward / Chief Stewardess Salary

  • 30m-40m :$4500-$5500
  • 40m-50m :$5000-$7000
  • 50m-70m- $5500-$8000
  • 70m+: $7500+

Responsibilities of a Chief Stewardess/Steward

  • Years of experience needed: 3-5 years
  • Minimum level of qualification: Depending on the size of the vessel you may need courses such as Food Hygiene and Safety, Silver Service, WSET, or a Purser course

The Chief Stewardess or Steward is responsible for all the interior operations of the yacht .

They are responsible for managing the interior team, and ensuring the interior of the yacht is maintained to the highest standards. Besides cleaning and laundry schedules , this also includes provisioning for crew and guests, budgeting, accounting, and training of junior crew.

  • Minimum level of qualification: Depending on the size of the vessel you may need courses such as Food Hygiene and Safety and Silver Service
  • Salaries start at $3000 and go up to $6000

Responsibilities of a Steward or Stewardess

A Stewardess/Steward is an entry-level position working within the interior of the yacht.

There are rankings within the interior (2nd, 3rd, 4th Steward/Stewardesses). As you spend more time in the industry, you will be promoted to higher ranks, and with that will come a better salary and more responsibility.

This role covers a range of tasks, including but not limited to housekeeping, laundry, bartending, table scaping, floral arrangements, serving, and hosting guests.

Engineer Yacht Salary

  • 20m-30m: $4000-$5000
  • 30m-40m: $4500-$6500
  • 40m-50m: $6000-$8000
  • 50m-70m: $7500-$11000
  • 70m+: $9000+

Requirements of an Engineer

  • Years of experience needed: 2-4 years in an engineering role onboard as Deck/Engineer or relevant land-based experience
  • Minimum level of qualification: AEC

The Engineer onboard is responsible for all mechanical functioning and maintenance of the vessel. This is a very technical role that can pay well as you gain experience and obtain your licensing.

Yacht Chef Salary

  • 20m-30m: $4000 – $5000
  • 40m-50m: $5500 – $75000
  • 50m-70m: $6500-$9500

Requirements of a Yacht Chef

  • Years of experience needed: 3-5 years depending on previous experience
  • Minimum level of qualification: Food Hygiene and Safety Level 2

The Chef is responsible for feeding the crew 2 to 3 healthy and sustainable meals a day. They are of course required to prepare meals for guests when onboard to the highest of standards.

In their day-to-day tasks, they will be responsible for their own provisioning of the galley, maintaining stocks, cleanliness, and hygiene of the galley.

The salary of the Yacht Chef varies depending on qualifications and experience.

Yacht Crew Salaries for Private vs Charter Yachts

There are two types of super yachts that require crew: Private and Charter yachts. The salaries for yacht crew differ slightly between the two.

Private Yacht

A private boat is owned by a single person or family who uses the yacht for their own purposes. They don’t charter it out and you can expect to have the same guests onboard for the duration of your contract.

The benefit of these programs is that you get to know your guests well so you may find it easier to manage their wants and needs.

You may also benefit from traveling to off-the-beaten-track locations as I have!

For yacht crew working on these private boats, you will usually not receive charter tips.

Charter Yacht

A charter boat is one that gets chartered out by guests. This operates as a business and also means you will have different guests for every trip. 

If you work on a charter boat you can expect to receive charter tips at the end of each charter. These are usually 10%-20% of the charter fee!

Considering these tips can be anywhere from $2000-$5000 per week depending on the size of the yacht, charter boats offer great earning potential and can skyrocket your salary as a yachtie.

2022 marked a significant shift in the yachting industry, as the effects of Covid-19 began to wane. One key trend that emerged was the extension of scheduled or rotational leave to positions outside of the engine room and the bridge. Flexibility with regards to leave has become a key factor for all departments and allows for a larger pool of candidates who are fully committed to the yacht, its programme and owner.

Yacht Captain Salaries

Both the Deck/Bosun's and the Interior/Galley Departments have witnessed a steady trend towards increased leave packages. Senior Stews, for example, now seek a minimum of 90 days leave, and 95% of Chief Stews look for full rotation. Stew Head of Departments have come to realize the benefits of scheduled or rotational leave, a perk that was once reserved for Engineers or Officer/Captains Departments. Additionally, and in order to compete with the larger yachts, an important number of yachts under 70metres are now also considering increased leave packages to secure top crew. It's important to note that the salaries listed in the report are median range salaries and can vary based on factors such as job-specific skills, professional qualifications, and experience.

If you have ever binge-watched Below Deck, or daydreamed about working on a luxury yacht, you may have thought to yourself, “I wonder what they make?”. Many people across the world have jumped at the opportunity to rub elbows with the world’s elite while working aboard the most luxurious ships in the world.

If you have wondered what the salaries are for workers on a yacht, and want to take the next step toward a great mix of freedom and pay, joining a luxury yacht crew might be for you.

Crew jobs on yachts can be some of the most rewarding careers available, but they are also challenging. It is important to know what to expect when applying for a crew job. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect to find when applying for a yacht crew job.

Yacht Staff Departments

To understand the yacht crew job descriptions better, you have to understand the different departments in a yacht. These departments include:

  • Deck – passage delivery, safety, outdoor guest activities, and exterior maintenance.
  • Interior – guest wellbeing, housekeeping, accounting, activities.
  • Engineering – smooth running of the yacht and safety.
  • Galley – stock control, hygiene, food preparation, galley maintenance.

On any yacht, the captain is at the top of the hierarchy. They are responsible for reporting to the vessel’s owner via a representative or directly. Below are the job descriptions for yacht crew members in these departments.

Salaries will vary depending on the size, type, location, and use of the yacht. The crew’s experience and qualifications will also play a role in determining their salary.

Deck Department Roles

The captain’s job description includes: keeping the vessel safe and secure, ensuring that all crew members are doing their job, and reporting any safety concerns. Typically, this person will also be in charge of hiring other deck officers for specific duties. Depending on various factors, the captain could be paid $4,200 to $15,800 per month.

Although this an extremely high pay rate, it requires decades of experience typically. Being in charge of the safety of passengers, crew members and potentially a $50 million yacht is serious business!

Chief Officer/First Mate

Chief officers’ responsibilities include supervising the crew’s daily activities, maintaining duties and duties lists, and overseeing crew pay. This is also the person who will be in charge of hiring other crew members and managing the activities or watersports the guests would like to participate in. Typically, this person will make around $3,100 to $14,200 per month.

Second Mate

The second mate’s job description includes: being in charge of navigating the yacht and overseeing any repairs that may be needed. Typically, this person will make around $3,100 to $8,400 per month.

The third mate’s responsibilities include: handling deck chores and maintenance for the yacht. The salary is $2,600 to $6,300 monthly.

A bosun is in charge of safety and security, supervising diving operations and monitoring all deck equipment. They will also maintain the diving records whenever necessary. This person will make around $2,600 to $6,300 monthly.

Interior Department

A purser is responsible for hiring, training, and caring for all crew members. They are sent out to find candidates and supervise their performance in port and during sea trips. They are responsible for every operation in this department. Typical salaries go from $5,200 to $9,400 monthly.

Chief Steward

The chief steward is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising all crew members in the interior department. They will set up work schedules, determine pay scales and enforce penalties if they are not followed. Typical salaries go from $4,800 to $8,800 monthly.

The steward is in charge of the kitchen, taking orders and keeping track of all supplies. They unpack and pack the guest’s luggage and remain on standby at all times in case anything happens. Salaries go from $3,100 to $6,800 monthly.

Engineering Positions

Chief engineer.

He or she is in charge of the engine room and is responsible for ensuring it is operating smoothly. The chief engineer is responsible for providing services to all the other positions on board if needed. They will make around $6,300 to $15,600 monthly.

Second Engineer

As the second in command to the chief engineer, this person will be in charge of all engine room duties and services that need to be done. Salaries are typically around $3,200 to $10,500 per month.

ETO Officer

An ETO officer will oversee all electrical and electronic equipment, including everything from the GPS to the yacht’s peripheral devices, lighting, and communications equipment.

They will be in charge of setting up the systems, testing them during repairs, checking their functionality, and identifying any problems. Salaries are around $4,300 to $8,500 monthly.

Galley Positions

The head chef is in charge of all the food preparation and storage. All food preparation is under the direction of this chef. They are trained professionals who ensure that strict hygiene standards and food safety are maintained. Salaries go from $6,300 to $10,500 monthly.

The sous chef is in charge of food preparation and operations and preparing all menus at the direction of the head chef. They prepare, cook, and serve all food items that the guests require while on board. Salaries go from $3,700 to $8,400 monthly.

Galley Staff

There is a galley staff who works in the galley. Galley staff will be responsible for washing dishes, cooking, cleaning, serving food, and preparing daily menus. Salaries go from $2,500 to $4,300 monthly.

In our biggest salary survey yet, we have uncovered detailed insights into Superyacht Captain salary and leave packages.

Almost 300 Captains responded across a range of yacht sizes from sub-30m to 100m+. In addition to average pay and leave, pay rise and bonus activity, the 20+ page report also compares Captain and Chief Officer experience, ticket level, longevity onboard and comparisons to our 2020 and 2022 survey findings.

Some top-level statistics are:

  • Every yacht bracket has seen a salary rise since 2020 and 2022.
  • Full rotation is also increasing and becoming more prevalent on sub-50m yachts, with an 11% decline overall in Captains with less than 59 days leave.
  • Two-fifths of Captains receive an annual pay rise, although this is not part of their contract.
  • 38% receive a 13th-month bonus, but random and unpredictable bonuses are more commonplace.
  • 70% of Captains have Master 3000.
  • Exactly half of the Captains who responded have more than 10 years’ experience in the role and 32% were Chief Officers for 3 to 5 years prior.
  • A third have been Captains on their current yacht for more than 3 years.
  • Flight allowance improves with yacht size, with 49% of Captains receiving Business Class flights as part of their package.
  • The average age at which respondents first became Captain is 32.5 years old.

The full report contains a comprehensive analysis of salaries and leave in each yacht size bracket and also compares full time with rotational roles, as well as explores any correlation between experience and type of ticket.

Simon Ladbrooke, Captain Consultant at Quay Crew, commented:

“In our most detailed salary report to date, we have gained an insight into the real-time compensation Captains receive, broken down by yacht size and with several other comparables too.

“A key takeaway this year is that, despite a slight decline in salaries between 2020 and 2022, the average monthly pay is now higher across all size brackets, representing a median 6.75% increase.

“Time for time rotation has also grown in popularity on all sized yachts, with the exception of <39m yachts which are all full-time at the moment.

“By gathering Chief Officer experience as well as longevity on their current yacht, we can surmise that onboard promotion is on the rise. The average age that someone becomes Captain is now older and the number of years of experience as Chief Officer is higher, suggesting the transition is also taking longer.

“This is undoubtedly down to there being more competition amongst candidates and it being more difficult to make that initial step up.

“Yet, almost three-quarters say it took them less than 6 months to get their first Captain role. This could be, along with the extensive CO experience demonstrated in this survey, largely down to onboard promotion.

Having said that, we were very surprised at this statistic as it doesn’t match at all with our experience. Often, Chief Officers are looking for several years before they finally get their opportunity. It’s something we definitely want to explore further in another survey.”

How Well Do Yacht Jobs Really Pay?

They define the phrase "working for the man".

Depending on position, yacht crew can get anywhere from $2,000 – $15,000 per month. Interested? I thought you would be. Let's go into the juicy details.

As we pointed out in part 1, working on a yacht is not easy. They work very long days, often from 10 to 16 hours each. So just how much do they make on average? Below we have a list of the most common positions onboard.

Each yacht crew has a salary range, with the lower salaries going to less experienced crew and on smaller yachts, and the higher range going to more experience and more years in the yachting industry. Remember this is just an average as each crewmember works out their own salary. Some make more, others make less.

Junior and 1st or 2nd year steward : Has 2 years or less of experience. 2,000 – 4,000 per month.

Chief Stewardess : Has about 5 or more years of experience, the chief stewardess is in charge of the guests satisfaction. Must be organized. 3,000 – 7,000 per month.

Cook : The Cook is at the bottom of the kitchen totem pole, working very long hours on prep and cooking to the guests desires. A great job for a recent culinary school grad. 3,000 – 5,000 per month.

Head Chef : The Head chef runs the kitchen just as they would in a regular restaurant. This position must have at least 3-5 years experience in fine dining environment and provisioning. 5,000 – 10,000 per month

Deckhand : Usually a new person with less than 2 years of experience. 2,000 – 3,500 per month

Deckhand / Engineer: This position is a combination of the two and requires some experience and certification working on yachts. 3,000 and up

Mate : The captains right hand man or woman, they often have several years experience and have worked their way up. 3,000 – 7,000 per month

Purser : Usually found on the larger ships, this position must be good with money and accounting. They have to be very organized as well. 5,000 – 8,000 per month

First or second officer : They are Next in charge after the captain. They have more experience and it shows by how much they make. They also have certifications and are licensed. 7,000 – 10,000 per month.

Captain : The Captain has made a career of the ocean and lots of quality experience. They know how to work in any situation and are excellent leaders. 7,000 – 10,000 per month.

Senior Master : This one has the most experience and usually works on only the largest of yachts. He has knowledge of the waters the world over and are very strong leaders. 9,000 – 15,000 per month.

Salary for yacht crew is also dependent on how big the yacht is and how much experience the person has. And let us not forget how salary also has to do with how well the owners and guests like your service. In the yachting world you have to be well liked to ensure you will keep getting work in the future.

Now if you want to know how to land a job in Yachts and don't have any contacts, I would recommend doing your research before going straight to a well respected yacht crewing agency. Just be prepared a serious lifestyle change and have fun.

There are currently over 15,000 yachts in the world large enough to require professional, qualified yacht crew and as a result this industry is growing rapidly each year.

A career in yachting can be rewarding, exciting and a wonderful opportunity to travel the world and explore new horizons!

Wherever there is water, you have the potential to go. Traditionally the yachting industry in the Mediterranean runs from April until September and from November to April in the States & Caribbean. Having said that, the possibilities are endless with many yachts circumnavigating the world.

Yachting is an eye opening, ultimately fun industry that demands hard work, perfection and attention to detail. We work with yacht crew every day and have a deep insight into what new crew should do to make the most of their career. Here are our top ten tips for starting out.

You cannot work on board a luxury yacht without getting your basic qualifications first. Bluewater offers a full range of crew training courses for those just starting in the industry:

Certain times of year are more favourable for new crew looking to join the industry. If you are going to Antibes or Palma, we advise end of March/April. Fort Lauderdale is different in that it is sunny most of the year, however there is a peak recruitment season around November each year.

In every yachting hub you will find english speaking bars and cafes filled with yacht crew. Make sure you go and explore to build your network within yachting. Although global, it is a small industry so make sure to present yourself professionally.

Finding your first position in yachting is the hardest. Make sure you are dock walking, looking for day work opportunities and handing out your CV. You may find that one day's work leads to a permanent role or other job interviews.

Read websites, follow yachting news, learn from other crew who were in your 'deck shoes' a few years ago. Good examples of yachting websites & magazines are:

Apply for jobs, manage your course bookings and sign up for events.

You can buy pay as you go SIM cards either in newsagents or specialised telephone shops around the Mediterranean. This will help to save you money when job hunting!

Captains check Facebook and Twitter pages before interviews. Make sure any public images of you are professional and will not reduce your chances of employment. Once employed be sure to avoid any posts about your yachts, current location and inappropriate images.

A smart, professional appearance will win over shorts and a beach top.

The most important aspect when you are looking for work is to make sure your CV is up to date, well written and includes any relevant experience that you might have.

It is best to emphasize any hospitality experience or customer service skills you may have had, such as waitressing, hostessing, silver service, bartending, cooking, nanny/au-pairing, babysitting, flower arranging, cleaning and/or laundry experience.

Should you wish to join the engineering department, make sure you include all mechanical experience and qualifications, including all work done in refrigeration, air conditioning, work with engines, and any electrical work, electronics or AV/IT.

The most important aspect to include is any recreational sailing experience you may have had. If you are also qualified or experienced in woodwork or carpentry, have painting, polishing, varnishing know-how, then that is also great. In addition any diving, sailing, fishing, any water sports background are all fantastic skills that are easily transferable.

We deal with a great multitude of chef positions, ranging from crew chef to head chef. Most positions will require some form of culinary training, however some crew succeed in entering this department through the stew/cook route on a smaller yacht.

When filling in your online profile with us, make sure to only select positions that you are qualified to do onboard. Selecting more than 3-4 positions on your profile can confuse potential employers and effect our search results.

A great place to start your travel and work abroad adventures is to find a yacht job and get paid to sail the world.

For most of us, traveling around the world on a luxury yacht is a dream. This life is usually reserved for the rich and famous. But it doesn’t have to be. Did you know you could find yourself island hopping in the Caribbean, Mediterranean or Pacific by getting yourself a yacht job? Yes, you could be the one waking up to beautiful sunrises in far flung places on a daily basis while yacht crewing. And you don’t have to be knowledgeable about sailing or well-connected in the yachting community either to find a job. In this post I’ll break down the different types of yacht jobs, the pros and cons of them, how much they pay and how to find a position crewing aboard a yacht. Are you ready to get paid to sail the world?

What is a Yacht?

First of all, what is a yacht? Good question, and when I tried to find a definition the words that continued to arise were ‘a yacht is a craft used for pleasure and sport’. The name comes from the Dutch word jaght which is a fast, light sailing vessel. It seems when the English King Charles II was carried by ‘jacht’ from The Netherlands back to England, the word came to mean a vessel in which important people were carried. And that impression of a yacht exists still today, that yachts are a luxury vessel designed for recreation, relaxation and comfort only for the rich and famous. But can I just point out, that I know many people who have worked hard, saved, and bought themselves a yacht to travel the world.

Types of Yachts

There are different types of yachts. You will here the names cruisers, superyachts and mega yachts throughout this post. These days you can classify a yacht as either a sailing yacht (wind powered) or a motor-powered yacht. To define the names even more:

  • A yacht less than 12 metres long is usually referred to as a cabin cruiser.
  • Superyachts are usually more than 24 metres (131 feet) long.
  • A mega yacht tends to be anything longer than 50 metres (164 feet).

No matter the type of yacht, they don’t sail themselves.  

Types of Yacht Jobs

It takes a wide variety of people to keep a yacht running smoothly. Firstly, the vessel needs looking after. It will need cleaning, maintaining and crew and deck hands for sailing. Then the people onboard need looking after. This is where cooks, cleaners, massage therapists and nannies come into play. Superyachts are like mini hotels and there is room for many workers to look after their guests, including, but not limited to hair stylist, yoga guru and beauty therapist to name a few.

Types of jobs on yachts can range and are determined by the size of the vessel. Smaller cruisers maybe owned by one person, couple or family and they might want an all round crew member to help them sail. Then you have the superyachts and mega yachts which have room for many people and they require all sorts of staff. I have classified the jobs into three areas as follows:

Catching a Lift – Travel and Work Your Passage

Travel and Work Your Passage

Where ever there is open water you will find some kind of sea vessel. The best way to find a lift is to frequent yacht clubs where yachts are moored and speak to the captains and/or leave your details on the noticeboard. If successful in obtaining a lift you will probably have to share costs towards your passage unless you are part of the paid crew. Popular places to catch a lift from/to include:

  • Sydney for the Whitsundays in Queensland, Australia or to New Zealand;
  • Darwin, Australia for Asia;
  • Auckland Harbour for the Pacific and the USA;
  • Balboa (Pacific Ocean end) or Port of Cristobal (Atlantic Ocean end) of the Panama Canal;
  • any of the Caribbean Islands, particularly Antigua (English Harbour), Jamaica (Montego Bay) and the Isle of Martinique;
  • Gibraltar: at the mouth of the Mediterranean, this is often a stop-off point for yachts to pick up supplies after crossing the Atlantic;
  • Nice and Monte Carlo in the South of France for the Mediterranean;
  • Any of the Greek Islands

Many yachts spend the Northern Hemisphere Summer (June-August) sailing around the Mediterranean, then cross the Atlantic Ocean (which can take around six weeks) for the Caribbean where they island hop between September and April. Many also head to the Southern Hemisphere Summer (December-February) and enjoy summer and many yacht races there.

Deliver a Yacht

There can be long distances involved with sailing and some owners prefer not to do the hard yards of sailing between countries. They prefer to spend their time anchored up in the company of family and friends or day-hopping along different coastlines. For those gruelling trips between continents that make up a large part of the circumnavigation more help is required – and this is where you come in. You can sail the yacht to its destination.

On-board Positions on Superyachts and Mega Yachts

As I’ve said, yachts range in size and some of the larger yachts can take many people. These larger yachts require crew to help the yacht function and the number of crew required will depend on the size of the yacht. Positions can range from the Captain, deckhand, mates and engineers to crew looking after the guests, ie. chef, steward, bartender, etc. to crew providing activities such as a dive instructor, fitness instructor or masseuse. These yachts are often moored in spectacular harbours at glitzy marinas of St. Tropez, Monte Carlo, Miami or Nassau to name a few.  

How Much Do Yacht Jobs Pay?

Having a job on a super yacht or mega yacht can be lucrative. As well as being paid to work, you employer is providing meals and accommodation. And as you are at sea, you will be able to save a lot of your wage. There are many variants to work out your wage including your qualification and experience, where the yacht is based and whether it is private or charter. However, here is a rough guide of what you can expect to earn weekly in US dollars:

Deckhand Jobs: $2700 Steward: $3000 Chef: $4000 Engineer: $5000 1st Officer: $6000 Captain: $7000

On top of these salaries, you can add tips, of which can vary.

Having a job on a small yacht with one other person or a family your wage might be a lot less as the yacht is smaller and your duties will vary. You may be pitching in as an ‘all rounder’, meaning you will be doing some sailing and maybe some cooking. Some really small yacht owners may even ask for you to contribute for costs of the sail. For instance, the owner may want to move the yacht from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. They might want you to help out with the food cost. But hey, this can be worth it particularly as you don’t have to ‘buy the boat’. Other times, you will be working for your passage.

Pros and Cons of Travelling and Working Abroad on a Yacht

Pros of yacht jobs.

  • You get to travel around the world to exotic locations. Or be moored in a spectacular harbour.
  • Get paid to live aboard the yacht. Though on the smaller yachts, you may be asked to contribute to costs.
  • Accommodation and Food is included so you will save money not having to pay for these.
  • Meet new people.
  • Learn new skills which you can use elsewhere.
  • Have wonderful experiences.
  • It is a great travel and work abroad job.

Cons of Yacht Jobs

  • You may encounter rough seas, get sea sick or need to dodge pirates.
  • Need to be tolerant and patient with some incredibly rich and rude people.
  • The working hours can be very long and sometimes erratic depending on the guests wishes.
  • Work can be very hard and you may need to be ‘on hand’ at all times.
  • Living quarters can vary and you may have to share.
  • Once on the boat, you are on, you cannot get to dry land when you want. Ensure you are comfortable with being in close quarters with the same people, for days, even weeks on end. If you don’t get on with work mates, it will be a very long experience.
  • Work can be seasonal.
  • You will be away from family and friends.

What Qualifications and Skills are Required to Work on a Yacht?

The qualifications and skills required to work on a yacht will depend on the position you are applying for. A chef will need different qualifications and skills to a deck hand. As would the Captain to the housekeeping person. There are two basic certifications that everyone should have in order to work at sea.

STCW 2010 (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers)

If you are wanting to find yacht jobs on commercial or charters, then you will need a STCW certificate. This is the qualification required around the world if you want to work on a yacht than is longer than 79 feet (25 metres). This would be a super yacht or mega yacht size. Not all smaller private yacht owners require this qualification but it is preferred. During the STCW course, you will learn about personal safety and accident prevention as well as fire fighting, personal survival (using life jacket and inflatable rafts and some basic first aid. It is very important you know how to be safe aboard a yacht as your life and other people’s lives, may depend on it in an emergency. The course takes about a week and can cost around $1000. This may seem a lot, but with the certification, yacht jobs open up to you.

ENG 1 Seafarer Medical Certificate

The next thing you will need after obtaining the STCW 2010 is an ENG 1 Seafarer Medical Certificate. This is a mandatory certificate stating that you are fit and healthy to work aboard a ship. You will need to find an MCA-approved doctor to carry out the examination to issue the certificate which should cost around $120.

Guests on your number one priority when working on a yacht

All the following skills are very useful to aid you securing a yacht job. They aren’t mandatory but the more skills you have, the better the jobs available to you. Ensure to list them on your CV.

Some jobs on yachts require a qualification, they include:

  • Diving Instructor
  • Massage therapist
  • Hairdresser / Beautician
  • Sailing licences

Skills and Experience that are very helpful to get a job on a yacht include:

  • Being able to speak other languages
  • Have high-end establishment hospitality experience
  • Good people skills and a high level of tolerance and patience
  • Be hard working with great organisational skills
  • Water sport experience

Never Sailed Before?

Don’t worry too much if you have never sailed before. Depending on the size of the yacht you may not need to have worked on a yacht previously. Plus it depends on the job you will be doing. On the bigger super and mega yachts if you are joining as a chef, you won’t need to worry about learning what a deck hand does, unless you are required to be a deck hand also!

For smaller yachts where you might be sailing with one person or a family who requires someone to help them sail their yacht you may need to have sailing experience. You can gain sailing experience through yacht clubs around the world as most of them offer introductory sailing classes. And these clubs are often thrilled to have new members join their weekend courses and races. Doing this will definitely give you some skills and the confidence to start your yacht crewing career. There is no quicker way to learn to sail than having a captain screaming at you while you slip about the bow! But after a couple of months you should be jibing the spinnaker pole like an old sat!

If you are unable to do a course at the very least learn the basics of boating. This should include how to tie real knots as your life will occasionally depend on the quality of your knots.

How to Find a Position on a Yacht

There are two main ways to secure a position on a yacht: Through an online yacht jobs staff agency and by connecting with the yachting community.

Online Yacht Jobs Staff Agencies

You will find many yacht job agencies based all around the world. Most agencies allow you to register your details into an online portal. This will entail uploading your CV into their system. Most will then contact you, or you them to be matched with the ‘Yacht’ looking for staff. Don’t just rely on using online agencies, many of them have a physical office and if you are in their part of the world, it is wise to contact them directly by phone to organise an in-person appointment for you to visit the office. The more agencies you register with, the better your chances of securing a position.

Most agencies will require you to add details into an online portal and upload your resume (CV). The quality of agencies varies, and it’s essential to do your due diligence before accepting a position.

Connect with the Yachting Community

If you have a marina nearby I highly suggest you connect with the yachting community there. You never know who you might meet at a yacht club that needs crew for their yacht. If you can’t wait around at the bar waiting to meet people, ask if you can leave an ad on the noticeboard. And tell the bar person you are looking for work because they are often a font of information and know who is doing what.

TIP : When looking for a yacht job dress the part. Dress to impress. Ensure you are showered, your hair is neat and tidy and your clothes are ironed. Be neat and tidy and maybe cover tattoos and take out any piercings. You will need to comply with dress standards of the vessel so until you know what that is, dress to impress.

Yacht jobs are not as glamorous as they are made out to be, in fact, they are often hard work. However, they can also be an amazing experience. I think waking up in a sunny tropical exotic location is much better than waking up to a cold and wet day at home! So is working on a yacht right for you? Yacht engineer salary and job description

According to  an article  published in 2021 from MTU, engineering jobs are once again one of the highest paying careers on the market, and for great reason!

Engineers endure years of intense studying to achieve their degree, making them among the most responsible and hard-working individuals in the job market. One of the many benefits of an engineering career is that you are not confined to a cubical setting. Have you ever considered working on a yacht?

But what does a yacht engineer do, and how much does a yacht engineer make? 

Guests board yachts to take them to exciting destinations and see corners of the world that others only dream of. Read on to learn why yacht engineers are one of the most sought after positions on the market today!

Yacht Engineer positions

Before determining how much a yacht engineer makes, it is necessary to break down and understand the qualifications and responsibilities of the different types of engineers. 

Also, it is crucial to remember that the pay of each yacht engineer position will vary based on several factors, including vessel and engine size, itinerary other requirements linked to the safe manning of the yacht. 

We aren’t really used to this, right? Many career fields on land have general pay scales that you can use to compare positions, say, in different cities or with competing companies. 

At sea, the numerous factors involved make it difficult to pinpoint an exact yacht engineer salary that will apply to every position. However, this article will provide you with the latest figures and research to give you an accurate idea of what to expect. 

This way, you can plug in your own numbers and have a reasonably precise idea of how much dough you’ll be reeling in per month. 

Without further ado, let’s jump right into the most common yacht engineering positions you would find sized on any vessel.  

Chief Engineer 

If the captain of a yacht is considered the brain, think of the Chief Engineer as the heart.

Much like our brains, Captains ensure that every aspect of the operation is working seamlessly and coherently to ensure smooth sailing.

Similar to how brains need blood and oxygen to ensure smooth running, Captains need their Chief Engineer to help oversee mechanical operations and keep the vessel running in tip-top shape. 

The Chief Engineer reports directly to the Captain and, depending on the yacht size may also lead his team of engineers below. Regardless of the size, it is the Chief Engineer’s responsibility to ensure the vessel is up to industry standards in regards to all maritime regulations.

A failing grade may result in the detainment of the vessel, which is probably one of the worst things that could happen, especially with guests on board who are dreaming of their next destination. Engineers must be able to see problems before they arise. Proactivity is key!

The Chief Engineer aboard a yacht helps to keep things running efficiently, and on smaller vessels, their responsibilities will also include those of the Second Engineer. 

Second Engineer 

As their name suggests, Second Engineers are typically second in command. They report directly to the Chief Engineer. In certain instances, it may be necessary for them to step in as acting or temporary Chief Engineer. They must be familiar with and able to adequately perform the same duties. 

On larger vessels, the Second Engineer may be the main supervisor for any Junior crew members under them, such as a Third or Fourth Engineer. 

The day-to-day requirements of Second Engineers can vary, so this position is full of excitement and new schedules! 

Therefore, all Engineers must be flexible. They could spend hours working in the engine room on one day, then spend all day the next helping out with difficult guest situations. 

Yacht Engineers spend the majority of their day working to prevent issues before they happen. Active thinkers who can quickly assess difficult situations to find the best solution possible are great candidates for yacht engineering positions. 

Both Chief and Second Engineers could be hired for permanent positions, on a rotational contract, or even on a temporary basis to cover for leave or a crossing or yard period for example. But what does that mean for your salary?

How Does a Rotational Contract Affect Pay?

In short, you will be paid less if you are in a rotating position as opposed to being permanently hired in the same role. However, many crew members would argue that the benefits of being on a rotation far outweigh the difference in pay.

It’s no surprise that working on a yacht can provide its fair share of challenges, especially in regards to one’s personal life. Being out at sea decreases your time with family and friends. 

Rotational contracts are typically 2:2, or 3:3meaning one month at sea then one month on land (or three months at sea, etc). Increasingly we are seeing 10 weeks on/off rotation so that crew are not always working the same months of each year. This is often the preferred option because it provides you with the best of both worlds: you’re able to have a well-paid job, while also cherishing irreplaceable family time. 

Most yachts over 50m now offer full rotations for the chief engineer, and increasing for the second engineer positions. This is good news for the industry, as the engineers can transition entirely behind the scenes. Guests aboard the yacht will have no idea that the new team is in place, and that is crucial to a smooth transition!

This rotation also dramatically decreases the number of crewmembers who burnout from being at sea for so long. In the long run, rotating crews are often beneficial because they lessen the need to go through the hiring process every six to twelve months if permanent crew members decide to head back to land. This can be costly in every sense of the word.

How Much Does a Yacht Engineer Make?

Above 50m, the Chief Engineer contracts are generally Rotational . The breakdown of their salary per month is below:

On yachts above 50m, crew may be offered Permanent Second Engineer   or Rotational Second Engineers  contracts. The average monthly salary for yachts from 50-90m for Permanent Second Engineers  is as follows:

Finally, the average monthly salary for  Rotational Second Engineers  on vessels above 60m is as follows:

Necessary Background Experience

The ideal Yacht Engineer should have experience working on a charter at sea. Similar sized vessels to the open position will probably be preferred and set candidates apart from the competition. 

They ought to display high levels of attention to detail and problem solving, as well as being able to plan and maintain an organized and efficient workspace. 

Being prepared for any possible scenario is the backbone of a successful yacht engineer. Situations often arise that will need to be handled with poise and efficiency, and the best applicant will have experience keeping a level-head in these tough scenarios.

There are various pathways open to become a marine engineer. You can either complete an engineering cadetship through your national Martime School or go down the more specific yachting career path. In this case the MCA in the UK and the USCG in the USA are the better known ones.

It's Equal Pay Day. Women earn 84 cents for every dollar men make — or even less

Equal Pay Day has come around again, and it feels a little like Groundhog Day.

Despite the annual reminder about how far into the new year women have to work to earn as much as men made the previous year, the wage gap remains persistent.

Women working full time, year-round earn 84 cents for every dollar men make, inching up from 83.7 cents last year, according to the latest numbers from the Census Bureau .

But that amount falls to 78 cents when you include seasonal and part-time workers, who account for roughly a third of women in the U.S. workforce, according to the National Partnership for Women & Families . That results in a difference of $11,450 in earnings over the course of a year, based on median annual pay, the group found. For women of color, the pay gap is even bigger.

"Women's labor force participation is the highest it has been in decades, and the gender pay gap is the narrowest it has ever been on record. Yet, despite this progress, the fight for equal pay continues," stated President Biden in a proclamation released Monday by the White House ahead of Equal Pay Day.

Education doesn't level the playing field.

It's not a matter of education, the National Partnership for Women & Families found through its analysis of Census Bureau data. Women with master's degrees earn 72 cents for every dollar earned by men with the same degree, and they earn less than men with bachelor's degrees. Women with associate's degrees earn less than men with only high school diplomas.

Half of respondents to a 2022 Pew Research Center survey said they believe a major reason for the enduring wage gap is that employers treat women and men differently. More than 40% pointed to women making different choices about work and family.

Narrowing the gap

Meanwhile, the White House has focused attention on yet another driver of the gender pay gap: the differences in the types of jobs and sectors where men and women typically work. The Biden administration has moved to narrow that gap through a number of initiatives, including encouraging employers in high-demand fields like construction to recruit more women, as well as requiring semiconductor chip manufacturers that want federal grants to ensure child care is accessible and affordable.

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Brittany Davila, a 34-year-old executive assistant who was a teacher for seven years before quitting. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

My teaching journey started with someone believing in my capability and not allowing me to settle.

After I'd failed the teaching certification exam for the sixth time, I thought, "I'm not doing this anymore, it's not worth it." But the principal of a school I was tutoring at reached out and said she wanted to get me into the classroom. She put me on an emergency permit, which made me eligible to teach for a short time before I got my official certification.

When she told me that I'd be teaching third grade , I remember thinking, "It's time for me to finally fulfill a dream that I've longed for." And thankfully, I ended up passing the certification exam on my seventh try.

It was everything I expected and more. I got to decorate my classroom the way I'd always dreamed of and establish a learning environment that I'd been imagining and observing from other teachers.

I realized very quickly that I had a way with children who had more behavioral issues . I had one student who was in the foster care system and came to school with dirty clothes and no food and kept his head down. Three weeks into my class, his head was up, and he was getting fed.

Those were the interactions that kept me going and allowed me to serve at the level I desired.

Deciding to leave teaching

In my seventh year of teaching, my peers voted for me to be our school's representative for the district's Teacher of the Year award. I was chosen as one of six finalists.

I realized I'd hit all of the goals I'd set for myself, and I thought about leaving teaching. My son had been diagnosed with autism , and I wanted to spend more time with him. I was also a leader within my church and had other dreams I didn't have time to fulfill, such as writing a children's book about autism for my son.

Talking with my husband, I said, "I think I've come to the end of it." Just because you're good at something doesn't mean you have to keep doing it.

Transitioning out of teaching was a challenge because I'd thought it was something I could do for the rest of my life. Now I was realizing that maybe I had the ability to do something else — but figuring out what was a little bit challenging.

I looked online to see if there was something I could do while I was at home and came across a video about being a virtual assistant .

I applied with a platform called Belay. I had to submit a résumé, cover letter, and sample email to a client, answer a lot of short-answer questions, and create a video highlighting my strengths and weaknesses.

It was a big shift. As a teacher, I'd been talking mostly to eight-year-olds, so I didn't have to be so professional and so corporate. But now, I'm helping run a business, and there's a lot of pressure. I had to quickly learn the language my clients were speaking .

I watched YouTube videos and corporate TikTok influencers , tuned in to Belay webinars, and learned from other executive assistants as well as my clients. I've only been in this for nine months, so I've made mistakes, but it's about learning and realizing there's room for growth.

I find it a little tougher than being a teacher; I taught for long enough that it felt natural to me. Working as a virtual assistant does not come naturally to me.

I'd thought the job was mostly just scheduling and taking calls for clients, but there are so many other moving parts. I have to create systems and processes based on my clients and their personalities. I also edit and upload podcasts, make social media content and graphics, and help out however else is needed.

Sometimes I wish it were streamlined and I just had one specific job, but when I take a step back, I realize that I'm growing.

I make about 25% less each month than I was making as a teacher

I have two clients — one who's a life coach and another who works in finance.

Back when I only had one client, I was just working about three hours a day. But now that I have two, my day is pretty full: I wake up around 5:30 a.m. and work until about 7 a.m., then get my son ready for his therapy, and get back to Belay around 8 a.m. Then, I work until I go pick up my son from therapy around 3:30 p.m.

As a teacher, I was making around $60,000 a year, or about $5,000 a month. As a virtual assistant, I make between $21 and $30 an hour. With the income I bring in from both of my clients, I make about $3,700 a month — about 25% less than what I was making as a teacher.

Being a virtual assistant gives me flexibility

The benefits outweigh the financial considerations: I have the flexibility to be there for my son, to do ministry full-time in the church that my husband and I run, and to really pursue the other dreams I want for my life. I just finished my first children's book, and I'm working on another book about my battle with anxiety. My dream is to be a life coach and help people to fulfill their dreams.

Working in education, you can get boxed in. And if you leave teaching , you're seen as betraying the field. But in the corporate world, people leave all the time, and no one says anything — actually, people congratulate them.

When I left teaching, I knew some people thought, "Well, then you only did it for yourself." And that's not true. Purpose looks different for everybody, and it's a matter of doing what you're called to do. Sometimes, and in different seasons, that can look different.

Lowe’s jobs & what they pay: Customer service, sales, cashier & more

L owe’s, America’s more-than-century-old hardware chain and the official home improvement sponsor of the NFL, employs around 300,000 individuals across over 2,000 stores in the U.S. Due to its size and nationwide prolificacy, the blue-clad big-box chain has become a popular option for job-seekers across the country, many of whom wonder how Lowe’s starting wages compare to those of its competitors.

So, how much do new Lowe’s employees make across the five types of entry-level positions offered by the chain’s stores? What benefits come with the job? And how does working there compare to working for the chain’s larger, richer, and younger competitor — The Home Depot?

How much does Lowe’s pay? Starting wages for entry-level jobs

In general, starting wages for new employees in entry-level roles at Lowe’s retail stores range from $14 to $25.90 per hour depending on store location, experience, and department.

Lowe’s careers site only lists starting pay ranges for job openings in California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, and Washington, as these states require employers to do so. Starting wages vary significantly between stores, and positions in cities with higher costs of living typically offer higher starting pay.

The pay ranges below are based on job postings for open roles in the above states as of early 2024.

Sales specialist: $17–$24.60

Sales specialists at Lowe’s are primarily responsible for customer experience. As the name implies, each specialist “specializes” in a particular area of the store, like appliances, flooring, millwork, or ProServices (see FAQ for more on this department).

Sales specialists are experts in their department and are tasked with greeting browsing customers, asking them about their needs, helping them find appropriate products, and explaining those products in depth as they relate to the customer’s project. Sales specialists may also be tasked with maintaining the cleanliness and safety of their section.

  • Starting pay range: $17–$24.60 per hour
  • Possible shifts: Opening, day, closing (FT & PT)
  • Requirements: High school diploma or GED and one year of external experience in customer-facing sales (or six months of Lowe's retail experience)

Customer service associate: $14–$18

Customer service associates are Lowe’s frontline workers. They typically support a particular department, like windows and walls, flooring, tool rental, live nursery, or others.

Employees in customer service roles are responsible for greeting customers, helping them find what they need, and assisting them with things like price checks and loading/unloading large or unwieldy merchandise while supporting their department with cleaning and stocking during downtime. They also use store computers and smart devices to process orders and invoices.

  • Starting pay range: When this article was published, Lowe’s had no open positions listed on its careers site in any of the states that mandate starting wage ranges be included in job postings. Indeed pegged the average wage for customer service associates at $14.57 per hour (within a possible range of $7.35–$23.35), while Glassdoor put the average at $16 (within a likely range of $14–$18).
  • Requirements: Six months experience with computers and smart devices and the ability to use common retail technology

Merchandising service associate: $16–$25.90

While Lowe’s merchandising service associates may interact with customers from time to time, the bulk of their time is spent doing more labor-intensive work. These employees are responsible for maintaining and adjusting the pallet-rack shelving used throughout most of the store, creating and maintaining product displays according to planograms (visual merchandising diagrams) provided by Lowe’s corporate, creating and maintaining signage, and identifying and removing damaged merchandise.

In some cases, merchandising service associates may use heavy machines like lifts and order pickers in their work, but certification and experience with heavy machinery are not required prior to hiring. Many merchandising shifts occur when stores are closed and involve preparing the store’s stock and displays for the following day, so overnight shifts are common.

  • Starting pay range: $16–$25.90 per hour (most jobs fall on the lower end of this range)
  • Possible shifts: Overnight, weekend, opening, day, closing (FT & PT)
  • Requirements: Basic reading, writing, arithmetic, and computer skills; overnight and weekend availability

Cashier: $14.50–$22.20

Cashiers at Lowe’s are expected to provide friendly and helpful customer service while efficiently scanning and bagging customer merchandise. Cashiers must maintain a clean and safe checkout area, answer any questions customers may have during the checkout process, and call on free associates to help customers carry merchandise and load their cars.

  • Starting pay range: $14.50–$22.20 (most jobs start at between $15.50 and 17.50)
  • Requirements: Six months experience with computer systems and retail technology

Receiver/stocker: $14.50–$21.00

Receivers and stockers at Lowe’s have one of the more physical jobs in the store. They are responsible for clearing receiving areas prior to incoming shipments, unloading shipments from trucks as they arrive, restocking merchandise in the store, and keeping overstock organized.

Receivers and stockers spend the bulk of their shifts on their feet doing physical tasks and may handle hazardous materials or use machinery, so attention to detail and the proper implementation of safety procedures are of the utmost importance.

  • Starting pay range: $14.50–$21.00 (most starting wages skew toward the lower end of this range)
  • Possible shifts: Overnight, opening, day, closing (FT & PT)
  • Requirements: Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills; the ability to work on one’s feet and handle heavy lifting

Lowe’s and Home Depot are the two largest home improvement chains in the world, so it makes sense that prospective employees might want to compare the two before deciding where to pursue a career.

Home Depot ranks far higher (#59) on Forbes’ 2023 list of the world’s best employers than Lowe’s(#323). Home Depot also instituted a company-wide minimum wage of $15 per hour in February of 2023, while Lowe’s does not offer a company-wide minimum wage, and jobs in the $13–$14 per hour range are not uncommon in some areas.

Additionally, Home Depot may be the better choice for those seeking long-term growth and career advancement, as Home Depot beats Lowe’s in terms of many important financial metrics — including total sales, profitability, and cash flow — despite having existed for less than half as long. Home Depot also has more total stores and employees and processed almost twice as many unique transactions as Lowe’s in 2022 .

Lowe’s used to do business in Canada, Mexico, and Australia, but its foreign branches have all closed or been sold to other brands, while The Home Depot still maintains stores in Canada and Mexico.

Despite all this, Lowe’s has racked up quite a few accolades as an employer. CHICAGO (AP) — Not even education can close the pay gap that persists between women and men, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report .

Whether women earn a post-secondary certificate or graduate from a top-tier university, they still make about 71 cents on the dollar compared with men at the same education level, Census Bureau research found .

That difference is coming into stark view on Equal Pay Day , and in spite of the fact that women comprise more than half of college-educated workers and participate in the labor force at record rates .

Rather than comparing full-time working men to full-time working women, the Feb. 22 Census Bureau report juxtaposes men and women with the same education caliber: graduates of certificate degree programs and those who hold bachelor’s degrees from the most selective universities, explained economist Kendall Houghton, a co-author of the research. The report also includes graduates who may have opted out of the labor force, such as women taking on child care responsibilities.

“The main point here is that there’s a substantial gap at every single level,” added Census Bureau economist and co-author Ariel Binder.

Field of study, choice of occupation and hours account for much of the discrepancy, but not all. Field of study, for instance, contributes to the pay gap much more for top graduates (24.6%), but for less selective degree holders accounted for only a sliver (3.8%). And the number of hours and weeks worked affect the pay gap more for certificate earners (26.4%) than selective bachelor’s degree earners (11.3%), suggesting there is a bigger gender difference in work participation for certificate holders, Binder said.

At the same time, about 31% of the gap for each education level remains unexplained, suggesting less easily measured factors such as gender stereotypes and discrimination may be at play.

Chantel Adams says she isn’t surprised that the gender pay gap persists even among men and women with the same level and quality of education, or that the gap is wider for Black and Hispanic women.

A senior marketing executive who holds an MBA from University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, Adams said her qualifications aren’t enough to counteract the headwinds she faces in her career as a Black woman.

Despite taking on extra responsibilities and an undisputedly strong performance, Adams said she was turned down for a promotion because she was told that “I was so articulate and sharp that it was intimidating to some people.”

“I have nearly $300,000 of post-high school education. It would be surprising if I weren’t articulate and sharp,” said Adams, who is based in Durham, North Carolina.

She said her peers at the company — one of whom did not have an MBA — were promoted while she was held back two years in a row.

“It’s unreasonable and unfair to hold someone’s strengths against them,” Adams said. “I would consider that as something that is race-based.”

Broadly, younger women are closer to wage parity with younger men, according to Carolina Aragao, who researches social and demographic trends at Pew Research Center. But the gap widens between the ages of 35 and 44, which coincides with when women are most likely to have a child at home.

“That does not play out the same way for men,” Aragao said, adding that there is actually an opposite phenomenon known as the fatherhood premium , in which fathers tend to earn more than other workers, including men without children at home.

Despite women making vast gains in C-suite and high-earning industry representation, wage gap improvement has stalled for about 20 years , Aragao said. Uneven child care and household responsibilities, falling college wage premiums , and overrepresentation in lower-paying occupations are all contributors to why the pay gap stubbornly remains.

For Adams, the best strategy to overcome them has been to keep changing jobs — six times in 10 years, across multiple states in her case.

“I knew that I needed to be intentional and move with urgency as I navigated my career in order to work against that headwind,” she said. “When those opportunities were not afforded me within one company, I’ve gone elsewhere.”

Adams said job coaching, mentorship, and support from Forte Foundation, a nonprofit focused on women’s advancement, have been instrumental to her success, while salary transparency laws — and even salary transparency within social circles — could help alleviate the significant pay gap challenges women of color face.

But corporate diversity initiatives have been subject to a growing list of lawsuits ever since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in college admissions. Adams said she worries that without affirmative action, corporate racial diversity could decrease, too.

“The big question that is looming over my head and probably many other executive leaders is: What does that do to the pipeline of diverse candidates that we may or may not have 10 years from now?” Adams said.
