Reviews (7)

Exceptional location. Well designed interior. Wonderful views of the skies and the estuary from all angles.

Top Deck is a great property and it has the best views in Walberswick. Comfortable beds and sofas, excellent kitchen and dining facilities. Situated next to the river and with a view of the sea, we watched the Southwold Sailing Club yachts and cruisers go out of the harbour entrance for their races on the sea. The village has two pubs for food (booking may be required!) and there are other small business providing excellent take away pizzas and delicious snacks and drinks. Top Deck has everything you will need for a lovely holiday. I can thoroughly recommend it.

Mrs Millard

'Top Deck' did not disappoint in any way. The most important feature was the wonderful view of the Blyth, the dunes and the sea. The weather was dry and sunny but if it had been dreary we could still have enjoyed the aspect. We love Cape Cod and couldn't help but make comparisons.....why go all the way to New England when Walberswick is so close?

An exquisite location and house topped with 2 days of sunshine. The decor of the house is fantastic and the facilities were top notch. You have to treat yourself once in a while and that is what we did! Sean, (Stayed May 2023)
Such a lovely break in a gorgeous place. The boat house decor made me think my own interior choices at home! There was nothing nicer than having a glass of wine with the fire on in the evenings. Once we found the quooker tap after looking for a kettle for half an hour we were happy with everything. The only negative was for the amount of bedrooms it really need another toilet and walk in shower. We loved it and want to return. Thank you! Karen, (Stayed April 2023)
Excellent property in stunning location, everything you could need is provided incl wood for the burner tea coffee even a bottle of milk! Highly recommend this well thought about property, high standard very clean and most importantly very enjoyable Peter, (Stayed November 2022)

In our view, one of the best houses in Walberswick - beautiful views and location for the river, beach, walks, the village and Southwold (walking via the bridge or taking the ferry). The house was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We used the canoe many times for lovely, peaceful trips down the river. We had an idyllic week. Lauren, (Stayed August 2022)
We are returning guests. We love the location, the boat house is beautifully furnished, lots of hot water and minutes from the beach. The Anchor Pub in the village is excellent. Karen, (Stayed July 2021)

One of the best places I’ve ever stayed. Sit back and watch that view in total comfort. Hop on the ferry to get your fresh fish (with obligatory glass of wine and chips) and walk back VIA the marshes and beaches. Heavenly. Cannot recommend enough. David, (Stayed April 2021)
We had the most amazing time, the location is just amazing and the house inside is idyllic. For a house by the sea with superb views you cannot beat this, would certainly recommend. Robert, (Stayed August 2019)
The Boat House is fabulous. Stylish, spacious, clean, well equipped. Lots of white fluffy towels, crisp good quality bedlinen and comfy beds! Wonderful views towards Southwold and the harbour. The wood burner was ready to use and there was plenty more logs in a basket. A great place to stay anytime of the year Karen, (Stayed April 2019)

A Guide to Walberswick in Suffolk, England

Walberswick England - Two Traveling Texans

Walberswick is an adorable little village on the Suffolk Coast in England.  It may not be as popular as nearby Southwold or Aldeburgh , but it might be the relaxing day out that you need.  Spend some time on Walberswick Beach, then see what else the historic village has to offer.  The main street has old shops and pretty cottages with picture perfect gardens.  Don’t miss St. Andrews where you can see ruins along with a working church.

In this Walberswick guide, I will tell you more about the things to do in Walberswick and how to get there.

Relax on Walberswick Beach

Give walberswick crabbing a try, visit walberswick church, take a break at walberswick tea room, have a pint or bite at one of the walberswick pubs, take the walberswick ferry to southwold, go on a blyth river trip, how to get to walberswick from london, where to stay in walberswick, is visiting walberswick worth it, expert tips for visiting walberswick, things to do in walberswick.

Most people probably think of the beach when they think of Walberswick because it is on the Suffolk Coast.  That’s the reason I first visited, but I’m glad I explore a bit more.  It has a special charm and interesting history.  Here are my suggestions for what to do when you visit Walberswick.

From the parking lot, you will walk across a bridge and over the dunes to get to the beach. Walberswick Beach is a mix of sand and stones.    There are no brightly colored beach huts, just some brown fisherman’s huts set back from the beach.  You can see the Southwold Lighthouse.

Walberswick Beach - Two Traveling Texans

We went on a Saturday afternoon in August.  It wasn’t too crowded but the weather wasn’t ideal.  It was a bit chilly and windy. I wished we had a windbreak like this one .  We didn’t let that stop us, we had a relaxing picnic. Some people even swam in the sea!  The water is shallow so it’s ideal for swimming as long as you don’t mind the cold water. Keep in mind there are no lifeguards though.

Walberswick Beach is also a great place to build a sand castle or fly a kite.  It would also be a pretty place for a walk. Dogs are allowed on the beach and we saw several when we were there.

**If you want to be prepared for your day at the beach, be sure to grab our printable beach packing list .

Crabbing in Walberswick is a popular past-time and it is the home of “The British Open Crabbing Championship”. The annual contest is open to all ages and the person catching the largest crab within 90 minutes is the winner!  Hooks and nets are not allowed and the crabs are released back into the sea once the winner is announced.

Bridge filled with people crabbing in Walberswick - Two Traveling Texans

When we were in Walberswick, it was hard to cross the bridge to get to the beach because it was full of people crabbing.  I was impressed that most people had caught at least one.  Apparently, all you need is a bucket , a weighted piece of string , and some bacon for bait! ( Click here to see crabbing kits available on Amazon ).  I am going to have to try it next time.  Before you go crabbing, please watch this video which explains the dos and don’ts of crabbing.

Kids will love crabbing too.  For more child-friendly ideas, check out this list of fun things to do in Suffolk with kids .

I was impressed with how many crabs there were! - Walberswick Crabbing - Two Traveling Texans

The Walberswick Church, St. Andrew’s, is unusual because the church is built on top of the ruins of the previous church.  It’s fascinating to visit because you see the features from the medieval church in the current church. On select days, you are allowed to climb the tower.

The ruins have been recently restored.  You are encouraged to explore the ruins and get a sense of how grand the previous church was before it was taken down.  You can even picnic among the ruins if you like. They also have special events in the ruins and inside the Church.

History of the Churches in Walberswick

There actually have been three churches in Walberswick.  At the time of the Doomsday book (1086 AD), there were two: one on the site where St. Andrew’s currently sits and one about 400 yards away.

During medieval times, the port of Walberswick was thriving, like many other Suffolk villages. The merchant class poured their money into the church.  Money was also coming in from the nearby Blythburgh Monastery .

In 1426 a beautiful 95-foot tall tower was added to the St. Andrew’s church. It became a landmark for sailors traveling along the coast. Then in 1493 the entire church, except for the tower, was rebuilt on a grand scale, to equal the imposing churches at nearby Blythburgh and Southwold. By the turn of the 16th century, St Andrew’s was one of the most impressive parish churches in England.

St. Andrews Church - Walberswick - Two Traveling Texans

Unfortunately for Walberswick, the prosperity of the port did not last. The river began to silt up and the harbor suffered.  When the church lost its income from tithes after the dissolution of the Monasteries the villagers were not able to maintain their grand church.  Church property was also damaged by Puritans.

In 1690 the villagers got permission to pull down the medieval church and build a smaller new church within its ruins. The villagers had to sell lead from the church roof and three of the four bells to raise the money they needed. Thankfully, the villagers were required to spare the striking 15th-century tower, which still stands at the west end of the new church.  The ruins of the medieval building are at the east end.

Inside St. Andrews

The “new” church is well worth exploring in its own right. It is tucked into what was once the south aisle and re-uses the medieval aisle wall. It also retains the large 15th-century porch and quire.  In one of the south windows, fragments of medieval glass have been gathered together to create a mosaic. It reminded me a bit of the window in Winchester Cathedral , but on a smaller scale.  You can also see the damage that the Puritans did on the Font.

Russell in the doorway of the ruins of the old Walberswick Church. - Two Traveling Texans

The Church Ruins

Standing in the ruins, you can imagine the grandeur of the previous church.  Look up at the tower and notice the line showing where the roof once lay. The two rows of windows show that the church was once two stories.  You can still see the checkerboard flushwork on the back on the wall of the current church. Some doorways are still intact too. The floor is all gone and has been replaced with grass.

The best way to get a perspective of these ruins is from the air.  Check out our drone video and you can see that these ruins are impressive.

The Tea Shed is located just a stone’s throw from the village green.  They have a great selection of teas and cakes. You can stop in for a cream tea or a light lunch.  Take advantage of the pretty garden if the weather is warm.

Every village in England needs to have a pub! Walberswick has two.  You can choose from the Anchor or the Bell .  Both pubs look charming.   Russell took me to the Bell because he prefers its atmosphere.  Next time, I will have to try the Anchor.

The Anchor is located close to St. Andrews.  They have a wide range of beers, including Adnams, cider, organic soft drinks and 100 delicious wines.  Their food is sourced locally as much as possible and they feature different specials daily. They have a front terrace perfect for those warm summer days.

The Bell Inn is located on the village green close to the sand dunes (and parking lots).  It’s 600 years old and part of the Adnam’s pub family. This is a traditional English pub with character.  There is plenty of space inside but if it’s a nice day, relax in their large garden. Their food menu also features local specialties

Russell's favorite pub in Walberswick is the Bell Inn. - Pubs in Walberswick - Two Traveling Texans

If you would like to go to Southwold from Walberswick, there is a ferry that can take you on certain days during the summer holiday season and other school holiday times.   I think “ferry” is a bit generous considering it is actually a rowboat that can only hold up to 12 people.  Still, for only £1, it’s not a bad deal. The ferry crosses the River Blyth so it’s not a long ride.

If you rather not go on the ferry, you can also walk to Southwold on the Bailey Footbridge.

The owners of the Walberswick Ferry also run boat trips (select days in the spring and summer) on the River Blyth through Walberswick Nature Reserve – an Area of Outstanding National Beauty.  You will see many different types of birds, and you may see other wildlife or even a seal. Your skipper will also tell you about the changing coastline and the fishing industry in Suffolk. Tickets for the boat tours cost £10 for adults and £5 for children.

The best way to get to Walberswick is to drive.  From London, it is 117 miles and will take around 2 ½ hours.  There are two “pay and display” parking lots at the end of town. Both are only a short walk to the beach.

Public transportation options are limited.  The best way would be to take a train from London Liverpool Street Station to Darsham and then take a taxi 7 miles to Walberswick.  Once you get to Walberswick, everything is within walking distance. You will need to arrange for a taxi to take you back to the train station.

Note that you will have to switch trains in Ipswich.  The train ride will take around 2 hours. If you do decide to go this route, book your train ticket in advance for the best price.   Click here to check schedules and pricing .

Since we are based in Norwich, it’s easy for us to visit Walberswick as a day trip.  If you want to spend a weekend or longer, you will need a place to stay.  Since it’s a somewhat rural location, an AirBnb might be your best option.

Walberswick is a charming village.  It’s not easy to get to but it is worth a visit.  I went for a relaxing beach and found the village had much more to offer.  I will definitely be back!

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

It is a nice place to gather specially at the lounge The service and staff very good I like the river view The food is almost like all restaurants in Russia they serve different cuisine. Staring Russian appetizer till Asian dishes Presentation and taste amazing... I consider it overpriced little bit More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More

The luxurious atmosphere of this place, the view and the location make it quite outstanding. We had dinner here with friends and the dishes were amazing, accompanied by a chilled bottle of Chablis, it really made me feel as if it was a part of... the classic Russian movie. More
