Up-Close and Personal

Exploring Antarctica is a life-changing experience and it’s even better when you cultivate personal moments with the environment and your fellow travelers. With fewer than 200 guests on every expedition, it’s easy to connect with like-minded explorers in an intimate atmosphere. Gather at Water’s Edge, sitting just 30 feet above the sea’s surface, with a craft cocktail or beer in hand and watch a whale breach the surface. Cruise amid the ice floes on a Zodiac safari and feel a sense of wonder overcome you as Gentoo penguins swim alongside.

Otherworldly Horizons

The dome observation lounge.

Offering 270-degree and overhead views, The Dome offers the perfect perspective of Antarctica from every angle. Take in the sight of glaciers and icebergs from all around as you swap stories of adventures with your companions. Rugged peaks along the landscape inspire a sense of discovery that leaves you eager to step on shore and explore the Seventh Continent for yourself.

Balcony Vistas

Every accommodation comes with complimentary binoculars to use on board. From your private balcony, look to the skies to find the black-browed albatross, considered the “Prince of the Clouds,” or keep an eye out for snow petrels. It’s easy to appreciate the view of the White Continent coming closer as our polar-class yachts approach landing, bringing you to exciting adventures.

Adventure On Board to On Shore

From the mud room, zip up your parka and lace on your boots to disembark the ship and board your Zodiac, launching you into adventures ashore and in the water. The mud room is more than storage for your exploring gear. It’s where paddling, kayaking and standup paddling excursions commence. It’s the transitional space between ship and shore, where every expedition landing begins and where you return to share your stories.

Relive Your Encounters

After a full day of trekking glacier paths, consciously interacting with the environment and becoming acquainted with the wildlife, the mud room welcomes you back. Drop off your gear and head straight to Après Sea – which may even start in the mud room with Mud Slingers – to toast and brag about your impressive experiences.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ICE & POLAR CLASS HULLS

Updated: Aug 24, 2022

Wednesday 29 June, 2022

Many expedition yachts feature steel hulls that are designed to break through polar ice. When considering an expedition yacht for purchase or explorer yacht new build construction, its important to consider the capability of the yacht in extreme environments.

Ice class simply refers to the notation assigned by a classification society to denote the level of strengthening the yacht has received. However, this has resulted in various classification societies using different grading scales. Lloyds Register for instance uses 4 grades; 1AS, 1A, 1B and 1C whilst the American Bureau of Shipping has 5 grades; A5, A0, B0, C0 and D0.

Polar class however is an attempt to harmonise these various rules by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), and complement the IMO Guidelines for Ships Operating in Arctic Ice Covered Waters .

There are 7 grades within the IACS Polar Class:

It’s worth noting that the yacht manufacturer’s and classification societies may still be using their own Ice Class classifications, and is something to watch out for when considering an expedition yacht for sale or charter.

For any further information on expeditions yachts for charter or sale, classification societies or yachts charter to Antarctica or the Arctic Circle, speak to your yacht broker specialists at SWM Yachts.

The vessel will be the first purpose-built expedition yacht compliant with the new Polar Code standards, and will be capable of operating in extreme polar and tropical environments.

Damen has partnered with Eyos Expeditions, who not only contributed to the operational design of the yacht, but will also plan the expeditions on the yacht. Dutch yacht builder Amels will be responsible for sales and marketing of the expeditions.

The super yacht will reach even the most remote destinations, and will provide up to 40 days of luxury service to all passengers without a port of call. It is scheduled to be launched for service in 2017.

SeaXplorer 65 design details

SeaXplorer 65 is based on Damen’s patented Sea Axe hull design. Designed for both ice and seaway, the vessel features a polar-class double-acting hull, and uses its stern instead of bow to break through the ice.

The hull design enables the yacht to effortlessly cut through the waves, providing minimal discomfort to passengers.

The yacht’s icebreaking performance was tested at the Hamburg Ship Model basin, where the optimised stern was tested for breaking through roughly 1m-thick first-year ice.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, a subsidiary of The Travel Corporation (TTC) launched its new cruise ship SS Maria Theresa, which was named after the Habsburg dynasty’s only female ruler Maria Theresa.

The ship is designed as per the International Maritime Organization’s (IMOs) polar-code standards, which from 2017 mandates that all yachts intending to explore polar regions obtain a Polar Code certificate, which would be recognised through touch IACS polar-class design and construction requirements.

According to Polar Code standards, the yacht is of Category B/first year ice to 70cm and classified by Lloyd’s register as Polar Class 6. The national authorities classified it as a Large Yacht code 3.

The SeaXplorer 65 has an overall length of 65m, moulded beam of 14m and draught of 4m, and weighs approximately 2,000 gross tonnage. It will accommodate 12 guests and 20 crew / expedition staff.

The exterior design for the vessel was provided by Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture. Passengers will have the option to choose a leading designers work for the interior of their accommodation.

Deck details of SeaXplorer 65

The super yacht will comprise four decks, a lower deck, main deck, upper deck and bridge deck, plus a sun deck, which will offer a 360° panoramic view.

The lower deck will feature crew cabins, a crew lounge and mess, an engine room, fuel storage tanks, a laundry and a store for provisions, expedition gear and waste management. The main deck will feature a main galley, crew cabins, guest gym, dive store with recompression chamber, guest boarding gates, spa area, and a toy store.

The luxury decks will provide sun beds and loungers, a swimming pool with underwater lighting, and the Sun Deck Jacuzzi. The lower deck will feature a wellness centre with a hamam, steam room, sauna with rain shower, and fully-equipped gym.

The crow’s nest is 20m above the water level, approximately the height of a seven-storey building, and will offer luxurious panoramic views.

Engine and propulsion

The engine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems will be compliant with the new IMO Tier 3 rules. The yacht will cruise at a speed of 15kt, and will have a propulsion power of 3,500kW.

Environmental impact

The super yacht will sail for long periods in zero-discharge mode, and will be equipped with exhaust gas soot filters to reduce environmental impact.

Waste heat will be recovered for efficient air-conditioning, heating, potable water, and pool heating. Waste will be properly managed with large holding tanks, plastics disposal, refuse separation, a glass crusher, a compactor, a cooled garbage store, and an onboard incinerator. The fuel storage tanks will be double-skinned as a precautionary measure to avoid spills.

NOTE TO U.S. CUSTOMS & BORDER PROTECTION

Due to the international and fluid nature of the yachting business and the fact there is no global central industry listing service to which all charter yachts subscribe it is impossible to ascertain a truly up-to-date view of the market. We are a news and information service and not always informed when yachts leave the charter market, or when they are recently sold and renamed it is not clear if they are still for charter. Whilst we use our best endeavors to maintain accurate information, the existence of a listing on this website should in no way supersede official documentation supplied by representatives of a yacht.

Polar Class 6

Step back in time to a golden age of exploration and explore Scott's Hut, frozen in a time deep into Antarctic waters for over a hundred years.

Breaking the ice

With a Polar Class 6 rating, a strengthened hull, and machinery developed to meet the requirements of polar expeditions, Sea Hawk can enter 80cm-thick first year ice and be stable with up to 100 tons of ice accretion.

REINFORCED HULL The reinforced hull has thicker plates and narrower frame spacing at the bow and around the waterline to protect against ice interaction.

ICE-FRIENDLY HULL SHAPE The hull is designed for safe navigation in polar waters, pushing through smaller pieces of ice or breaking through thicker ice.

OVERSIZED PROPELLERS & MACHINERY All yacht machinery has been developed to meet the requirements of ice interaction and polar expeditions.

HIGHLY MANOEUVRABLE Our yachts are designed with Becker rudders and strong side thrusters for efficient operation and manoeuvrability. Extendable azimuthing propellers also provide extra manoeuvrability and dynamic positioning.

This Insane Superyacht Concept Is 384 Feet of Exploration with a Helipad, Hangar, and a Submarine Garage

384-foot Alexis polar-explorer yacht from Goliath

Designer Steve Kozloff, creator of the Goliath polar-explorer series , recently unveiled its most impressive member yet. The Alexis design blends grace and bulk across six decks. The 384-foot behemoth looks like the ultimate expedition yacht, or even a sizable research vessel, designed to explore the ends of the earth .

The California-based Kozloff incorporated a lot of luxury into the polar-class hull, including features like a swimming pool on the bow and another for the owner’s private use on the stern. And Alexis not only has a certified helipad, but also a 3,000-square-foot hangar, with enough space for four small helicopters . Kozloff designed the landing pad so that the boat’s fleet of aircraft could take off and land in all conditions, and then be safely stored in the hangar out of the elements. Having different types of helicopters turns the yacht into a base for exploring remote, out-of-the-way land destinations that cannot be reached any other way.

Kozloff’s laser-focused attention to detail makes Alexis more than just the usual explorer concept. The two pools, for instance, have hard retractable covers so the pools do not have to be drained. That’s a detail that many superyacht crews, who have to drain thousands of gallons from superyacht pools before traveling, will appreciate.

Other features include heated handrails and doors to mitigate icing problems while visiting cold regions. The ice-class hull is even designed for breaking through moderate ice. Alexis also has an unusually large tender garage that holds two submarines , multiple tenders, and many other water toys. Plus, there are four “freefall” lifeboats that can be launched in all conditions.

Inside the intrepid, go-anywhere exterior are not one, but three master suites, and luxury accommodations for up to 20 guests. The exterior spaces forward are designed for guest use, featuring a handsome stair-step series of decks amidships that culminate in an outdoor sky bar on the top deck. The swim platform at the stern of the yacht is a special place for the owner to enjoy private and immediate access to the water.

If Alexis is ever built, it promises to be one of the most magnificent explorer yachts ever, a vessel that can travel anywhere without skimping on the luxuries that make yachting special.

“Nansen Explorer can go to places others can’t. She has a combination of a strong ice class and a large commercially certified heli deck that can accommodate an expedition helicopter (and will soon support two!). Together, these open up new destinations and opportunities for us, like early spring heli skiing in Greenland. Nansen is a perfect cross between a rugged commercial ship and a yacht. She has the power and grit of a ship accustomed to working deep into the ice, and a bridge team deeply experienced in polar operations. Yet with only 12 guests onboard, she offers the intimacy and personalized nature that you’d find on yachts. Most importantly, Nansen Explorer has a real soul– from working scientific missions to heli-ski trips in Greenland to Antarctic charters, the ship has a purpose and mission. There is really nothing out there quite like her, with this unique mix of capabilities (ice, helicopter, etc.) and service. Joining Nansen Explorer brings you on more than just a yacht charter- she brings you on a true adventure.” – Ben Lyons, EYOS CEO

Nasen Explorer| Expedition Super Yacht

“Nansen Explorer is the perfect launchpad for polar adventures. Strong, stable, adaptable, and capable she is perfectly at home in any high-latitude environment. This is where adventures are made, memories are created and enduring friendships are forged. Every voyage creates a unique story, one that can only be told by those privileged to be in that moment.“ Rob McCallum, EYOS Co-founder

Nasen Explorer| Expedition Super Yacht

“Whether chartered as a support vessel or sailing solo on expedition, Nansen Explorer is an absolute dream for polar region operations. Spending days traveling through sea ice in search of polar bears or emperor penguins is no easy feat; Nansen Explorer does it with style. While her rugged exterior blends well with the remote environments she is often found in, her interior warmth and level of service easily exude a laid-back home-away-from-home vibe. There’s nothing quite like strolling around the lounge in your slippers, spiked hot chocolate in hand, watching the polar landscape go by. For those who like to take polar exploration to the next level: zodiacs, kayaks, a helicopter, and your expedition team await.” – Moira Le Patourel, EYOS Expedition Leader

Nasen Explorer | Expedition Super Yacht

Nansen Explorer is a brilliant platform for exploration and adventure. Fun is at her core and the onboard team’s experience and passion for discovery ensure each expedition is unforgettable. Whether heli skiing in Greenland, diving below the surface in Antarctica or spotting Polar Bears in Arctic Svalbard, the vessel provides a platform for endless experience. – Tamsin Vaughan, EYOS Client Director

THE FORMIDABLE G10 POLAR CLASS EXPEDITION YACHT

The Goliath Series releases another Steve Kozloff expedition yacht design concept - The 53 meter G10 polar class expedition yacht.

polar class expedition yacht

Designed to accommodate 14 guests for extended periods of time in the remotest locations on earth, the G10 medium sized explorer yacht is a purpose-built steel hulled motor yacht with an ice class hull (PC2). Her steel hull has the strength to endure the intensity of driving through moderate multi-year ice conditions. Undoubtedly, making her one of the most formidable yachts of her size.

With the advent of hand-held remote controls, azipods, and bow thrusters, the G10

is designed for minimal crew for a more private cruising experience offering an extreme range of 22,000nm, equating to a 90-day endurance at 10kts.

polar class expedition yacht

The water ballast system can adjust the draft from 15 ft. to as little as 10 ft., enabling the G10 to operate closer to shore. A generous 30 ft. of freeboard at the bow offers a drier on-deck experience in heavy seas.

The 3,462 sq. ft. aircraft hangar can accommodate four small or three medium helicopters. A hangar is a necessity in long-term harsh condition voyages, and a very

useful feature for visiting guests with helicopter. The large flight deck makes air operations possible in harsher conditions. The four externally stored free fall life boats can accommodate the entire crew and guests.

It’s for the ultimate seafaring sports fan — and history buff.

A lavish superyacht designed to resemble a centuries-old galleon — and featuring full-sized basketball, tennis and handball courts — is being pitched by a California ship designer.

Steve Kozloff’s The Galleon involves eight decks boasting hoards of extravagant goodies that can be custom-arranged for buyers — who are wealthy enough to foot its roughly $750 million price tag.

The striking nearly 525-foot luxury ship, complete with four massive sails, could hold up to 200 guests and 150 crewmembers, Kozloff said.

“I liked the style of the Old World galleons, especially the glass work at the stern,’’ the ship designer told The Post on Tuesday. “I wanted to imitate that feature.

Illustration of The Galleon.

“Plus, I want to encourage the cruise industry to be more green,’’ he said of the yacht, which would have a hybrid diesel-electric engine in addition to its sails.

polar class expedition yacht

The ship’s planned features include the sports facilities, plus a pair of swimming pools and two “lazy rivers.”

It also includes a helipad and 4,500-square-foot hanger for high-flying guests, not to mention room for six speedboats, four submarines and other smaller watercraft.

Illustration of The Galleon.

Additional onboard entertainment could be found at the ship’s cafe, bar and restaurant.

Kozloff said the price depends on how far buyers want to plunk down on the yacht’s interior furnishings, adding that it would take about $750 million for it to be “properly outfitted.” He said the masts alone cost around $140 million.

The Galleon is considered an “explorer’’ yacht, meaning it could cruise the world at more than 20 mph with a steel hull able to cut through ice floes.

Illustration of The Galleon.

Its length is 70 feet less than the world’s longest yacht, the Azzam, which is reportedly owned by royals from the United Arab Emirates.

DAMEN launches its first SeaXplorer

The polar class luxury expedition yacht is scheduled to be handed to owners in 2020….

Image for article DAMEN launches its first SeaXplorer

The DAMEN SeaXplorer range was introduced to the market in 2015 following a collaborative approach to the project that included the creation of a team of experts including the SeaXplorer design team, the Damen Research Laboratory , Azure Yacht Design and EYOS Expeditions , providing hundreds of operational design features based on their expedition experience.

DAMEN has now launched its first SeaXplorer luxury expedition yacht, having recently emerged from her building hall in the Netherlands. The 62m custom-designed yacht is scheduled to be handed over to her owners in 2020, and will be the first delivery from the DAMEN SeaXplorer range offered by yacht builder AMELS and DAMEN.

At The Superyacht Forum 2019 , where we will be ‘ Building for the Next Generation ’, our workshops will consider how each sector will prepare for superyacht owners of the future. One of the key points to consider for our delegates and our array of panellists and speakers will be how these next-gen owners will use their vessels compared to current and historic owners. As found with the 62m SeaXplorer, the yacht is Polar Class and has expedition facilities for 30 days of autonomy, enabling the owner with vast itinerary options and allowing for dynamic use of the vessel beyond the Med.

She also benefits from a fully certified helideck and helicopter hangar, as well as two large tender garages and a dive store, while a Siemens BlueDrive system with three variable speed generator sets and DV bus generates the power onboard. In combination with electrical propulsion motors and a battery pack, the yacht has an economical and environmentally conscious configuration – another increasingly key factor for future owners.

Featuring a customised design with naval architecture completed by Damen’s in-house design team, the 62m expedition yacht displays exterior lines by Azure Yacht Design. Carlo Torre from Monaco Yacht Temptation was chosen by the owners to execute the interior design, while the Fraser technical team have supervised the build.

The outfitting of the DAMEN SeaXplorer took place at the Vlissingen East Yard, near to the yacht builder’s Vlissingen City yard where AMELS yachts are completed.

Nansen Polar Expeditions Launches New Polar Travel Company

polar class expedition yacht

Nansen Polar Expeditions is an expedition yacht charter company which bridges the gap between adventure expedition tours, yacht charter and wildlife conservation, and the company is shaping up to be the preferred platform for polar travel.

Their website name and motto “We Follow Heroes” was inspired by Norwegian explorer and scientist Fridtjof Nansen, highlighting a strong synergy with the origin of the Scandinavian company.

Skilled in delivering high-end hospitality and managing logistics to exotic locations, the Nansen Polar Expeditions team excels at coordinating private cruises and have been expert advisors for filming in remote polar regions for world-class productions including Frozen Planet 2, Blue Planet 2 and The Penguin King.

The founders have expert knowledge of remote regions, with over 30 years of operational experience demonstrating a valuable testimony to their backgrounds in expedition guiding, wildlife photography, biology, engineering and operations.

The company’s proven expertise already sees them fielding global enquires from film, science and ocean research trips, with discussions about upcoming projects already underway. Nansen Expeditions will offer private charters as well as cater for these trips specifically targeted at film, television and research crews.

Nansen Polar Expeditions have now launched a new yacht expedition company to support film production in polar regions. The team have recently concluded the refurb of an ice class B vessel that was previously owned by the Norwegian government. The rugged yet luxurious vessel, MS Villa, blends all the facilities and attribute of a working vessel with an expedition platform. The boat is an ice-strengthened ship (ice class B) with modern navigational equipment, ample dry deck space for protection of film/photography production gear and there’s spacious guest accommodation onboard.

MY Villa

Nansen Polar Expeditions is set to be the preferred industry provider of exclusive polar expeditions with a maximum number of 12 passengers per trip.

Their first expedition is scheduled to depart in August 2020 from Svalbard in Norway. More info: https://wefollowheroes.com

polar class expedition yacht

A $1 Billion Superyacht with Airplane Hangar and Submarine

The Goliath Series , a firm specializing in polar-class expedition yachts, drafted one of the most over-the-top watercraft ever rendered. The 215-meter/705-foot-long superyacht G-Quest is designed to tackle humanitarian and research objectives in total luxury. Most of the superyacht’s space is devoted to accommodating oceanographic and medical research, green propulsion experimentation, and medical intervention.

Among its most ambitious features is a 6,500-foot aircraft hangar designed to house two Sikorsky S-92 VIP helicopters, various smaller helicopters, and an electric VTOL craft for transporting personnel. A separate hangar at midship stores two Cessna Caravan Seaplanes, selected for their ability to transport resupply across long distances.

The 215-meter/705-foot-long superyacht G-Quest is designed to tackle humanitarian and research objectives in total luxury.

The G-Quest’s tenders aren’t limited to aircraft. Kozloff has also dedicated garage space for six fully electric Candela hydrofoil “flying boats,” an electric ship-to-shore landing craft for transporting vehicles and freight, a U-Worx Research submarine , two SUVs (one of which is a Nimbl exploration vehicle), and three Taiga Orcas —that model made headlines as the “world’s first electric jet ski” in 2022.

Aside from a full-fledged fleet of vehicles capable of traversing land, air, and sea, the G-Quest superyacht boasts some unabashedly imaginative accommodations, including its oceanographic laboratory, medical laboratory, dive center with compression chamber, MRI and X-ray imaging center, ophthalmology department, dentist’s suite, robotic surgery operating rooms, and 20 hospital beds.

On the luxury side, there’s a 3,000-square-foot owner’s suite with panoramic views at the bow, a large spa, and pool on the flybridge, a basketball court above the flybridge, another pool with a shaded lounge area above the aft hangar, a dining room at the stern, and a solarium with a second dining area at the bow, plus a beach club with a full bar. The three upper decks are reserved for the owner and guests, offering 18 VIP cabins and a primary suite with a private balcony and pool. It also boasts five-star amenities like a beach club, Turkish bath, three heated pools, yoga studio, and a 20-person theater.

A total of 26 owner’s guests will reside on the three upper decks, while an operating crew of 150, including doctors, scientists, pilots, nurses, and research engineers, will live in unspecified quarters.

Even the propulsion system is ambitious. The designer imagined rotating azimuth thrusters powered by batteries charged by “green fuels of the future”—hydrogen, methanol, and biodiesel are all on the table for this superyacht.
