'Far ahead of his time': Renowned Kiwi boat designer Ron Given dies

z

A boat designer ahead of his time and a perennial student determined to perfect his craft – even in his final days.

That’s how friends and loved ones have described Ron Given, one of the country’s most famous boat designers, who died on Sunday in Noumea - two days before his 86th birthday.

Given had been living in New Caledonia off and on since 2020, shortly after being diagnosed with metastatic melanoma – a decade after undergoing successful treatment for skin cancer.

"Immunotherapy treatment gave him three more years but, in February, the  disease came back and no more could be offered medically,” Given's wife Andr ée said.

“Everything was arranged to get palliative care at our apartment. Ron died peacefully around midday Sunday, surrounded by his Noumea family and the week before, his son Victor and daughter Tracey came to see him.”

Tributes have been pouring in for Given, designer of the Paper Tiger catamaran which – with more than 6000 registered worldwide – is considered the country’s most successful “off the beach boat”.

Retired boatbuilder and good friend Craig Partridge said the industry has lost one of its leading figures.

“He was a brilliant designer and, in some ways, underrated. I don't believe there's been any other designer in the world that had that many boats built off the design,” Partridge said.

At the time of his death, Given was designing a 16m motor catamaran for a Tauranga-based client.

“Ron kept telling the doctors to get on with it because he needed to get home and get back to his project. That was the kind of guy he was, committed to the industry and to his craft to the very end.”

From an engineering background and with a love for motocross, Given designed his first boat as a 24-year-old in 1961 – driven by a desire to perfect what he believed was “the boat of the future”.

“He was far ahead of his time, one of our most talented yacht designers and obviously one of our best multi-hull designers,” said decorated Olympic sailing coach Grant Beck.

“He was extraordinarily clever and never offered a complex solution to a problem. He always found a simple solution.”

Given’s work received high praise in several countries.

“The New Caledonians have phenomenal respect for Ron and, in some ways, he is more appreciated there than he is over here - because he has so many boats over there, doing enormous miles.

“And he had a great sense of humour – he was the only person I know who was fully French and fully Kiwi and managed to pick up the worst from both cultures,” Beck laughed.

Given would spend many hours studying literature and designs and developed a particular interest in safety as he became more involved in coastal and offshore racing.

David Austin, the leading medical practitioner behind the  annual Dr Dave's Offshore Medical Course , knew Given for over 15 years.

“ He was a fantastic guy, innovative, well ahead of his time and one of those people who was always interested in listening to people's ideas and adopting them,” Austin said.

“Some designers you find are fixed in their ideas, but Ron was always keen to help and to listen to other people and take on new ideas.”

Given was also a keen yachtie and competed nationally and internationally  - always designing and building his own boats and logging thousands of sea miles delivering his catamarans to offshore clients.

One of the most recent trips perfectly captured Given's passion for his work.

"Ron, myself and another guy were delivering one of his 11m power cats to Maré Island and Ron spent half the time on the bow, looking out the window  at the wave action," Partridge said.

"That was Ron – his mind always working stuff out. Always learning.”

Given is also survived by  stepdaughters  Samantha and Caroline, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A ceremony will be held in Noumea on Thursday (March 16) and further arrangements will be made to honour his life in Auckland at a later date.

Celebration of The Life of Ron Given - 6th May 2023

ron given catamaran

Vale Ron Given

It is with sadness  that we acknowledge and honour the passing of Ron Given, on 12 March 2023, in Noumea, aged 85.  Ron, a marine designer, was the inspiration behind the Paper Tiger and it's creation 55 years ago.

Tributes to Ron's life can be found on our History page and on YNZ website .

Ron was present at the Paper Tiger Nationals in Maraetai in 2013. At that time the interest in catamaran sailing was high as the first AC72 catamarans were training off Maraetai. He was intereviewed by TV One and that interview is shared here.

We were also fortunate to have Ron and his wife come over from Noumea for the 50th Anniversary Celebrations in New Plymouth in January 2018, along with several legends of the Class. It was an unforgetable catchup.

A beautiful sea-worthy vessel, designed by the legendary kiwi Ron Given

A beautiful sea-worthy vessel, designed by the legendary kiwi Ron Given and built by NZ boat-builder Neil Strong. Master blaster is safe, strong, and fast - A Kiwi icon of the sea. Master Blaster has been thoughtfully designed to utilise every inch of space. At 6.5m beam, the interior contains 6 cabins, comfortably sleeping 10 people, a full galley that would rival a domestic kitchen, massive saloon and dining area, head with shower and of course ample storage. The exterior Aft boasts a large and comfortable cockpit making Master Blaster a great cruiser for entertaining. Additionally, there is a wooden deck which serves as a swimming platform, fishing and trawling station, outdoor shower and BBQing. The bow of the vessel has the signature catamaran tramps but unlike others, Master Blaster has a wooden deck for relaxing and entertaining - another example of optimised space. Master Blaster is simple to operate and navigate. All lines come back to the sheltered helm. Both the head sail and main sail are on furlers making it super easy to raise, return and trim sails with the automatic winch. Next to the steering wheel is a brand-new navigation station, kitted out with Garmin chart plotter, instrument displays, VHF radio and autopilot. This gives accurate and real-time data, making your voyage safe and stress-free. Master Blaster has two 35HP Stern drive engines. The engine with the most hours has done no more than 1400. Engines start first time every time, have been well maintained, with a lot of life left in them. Master Blaster is GOP - an extremely strong and safe way to build a boat. Launched in 1978, she has been completely refitted and upgraded to bring her up to spec with any modern-day catamaran."

Ron Given 42

In English:

The actual owner works closely during a year with the naval architect Ron Given to optimize the initial design. The cockpit is extended one meter to accommodate a big freezer, two bait lockers, a combat chair and other equipment for game fishing. The living area allows the crew to sleep comfortably in three double cabins, one large head and a very well-equipped galley. Her construction is confined to Life Style Yachts in New Zealand and “Poe Miti” head towards New Caledonia in 2013. Since then she’s constantly improved and cared for and in March 2022 two brand new Yanmar 250hp are installed, powerful, economical and still under warranty. The boat is equipped and certified by Veritas in Category B (<200nm from a shelter) and the combination of her great fuel capacity, her water maker and solar panels will give you great opportunities to explore far away destinations. Her recent marine survey confirms her excellent condition.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Paper Tiger

Paper Tiger insignia

Paper Tiger is a 13 ′ 11 ″ / 4.3 m catamaran sailboat designed by Ron Given and built by Formula Sailcraft starting in 1967.

Drawing of Paper Tiger

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originated in New Zealand and soon spread to Australia. Designed for the for the amateur builder using plywood. A fiberglass version was introduced in the mid 1970’s. Class is still active (2010). Plans and completed boats are still available.

Cables Length II is one of those classic, strong, bluewater performance catamarans that arise from Southern Ocean builders and designers. She was not built for the comfort cat, trader trade, but custom crafted for a serious, deep-water voyager who wanted a high quality, New Zealand built yacht that could take the punishment of the massive seas and heavy winds he would encounter sailing in and around New Zealand. Cables Length ll is neither a super twitchy, fragile, rocket ship-type performance cat or a fat-hulled barge meant mostly to sit at anchor. She is instead a balanced attack for the needs of a liveaboard sailor who wants both good performance, strength, and a measure of comfort at anchor that cannot be found on feather-weights. She is, in short, a truly exceptional offshore cruising catamaran for the discriminating yachtsman who really loves to sail and enjoys putting some serious miles beneath his daggerboards.  Configured during construction as a comfortable and safe live aboard, capable of single handed passage making, Cables Length lll was designed by Ron Givens, so she is Kiwi to the core: NZ designed, NZ built, and launched in December 2001.      Sadly, the owner of this fine yacht has passed away and we are selling her for the estate holders. She is a very well know in Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand where she often sailed. She has been professionally maintained, fully refitted, and is in excellent condition. She could not be replaced for anything under 1.2 million U.S. dollars given the quality of her construction. She is currently lying in Whangarei, NZ, with both NZ Duty & GST Paid. This exclusive listing of The Multihull Company can be shown with advance appointment only, so please contact us early enough so we can organize properly. Right now she is on the hard and we will have to recommission her for survey and sea trials. If you have any specific questions, just give us a call or email or skype us.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Three escaped inmates from the eastern Caribbean island of Grenada were charged in the killing of a U.S. couple whose catamaran they hijacked, police said Thursday.

Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; Atiba Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Trevon Robertson, a 23-year-old unemployed man, were charged with capital murder, escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus also was charged with one count of rape, according to a statement from the Royal Grenada Police Force.

The men appeared in court on Thursday and were ordered held in prison until their hearing in late March.

They were accused of escaping from a police holding cell on Feb. 18 and hijacking a catamaran owned by Ralph Henry and Kathy Brandel while they were aboard. Authorities said they believe the couple was thrown overboard as the suspects sailed to nearby St. Vincent, where they were arrested on Feb. 21.

The three men were ordered deported from St. Vincent on Monday.

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association described Hendry and Brandel as “veteran cruisers” who participated in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and had planned to spend the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

Their bodies have not been found.

Grenada Prison Escapees Are Charged With Murder of American Couple

The couple, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada.

A catamaran with the name “Simplicity” written on its hull sits on blue water on a sunny day. It is flying the American flag.

Three men who had escaped from a prison in Grenada and were accused of hijacking an American couple’s yacht to flee have been charged with their murder, the police said on Thursday.

The couple, Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathy Brandel, 71, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada . They had been spending the winter cruising in the Caribbean in their catamaran called Simplicity, which was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Feb. 21.

There was no indication in the latest police statement that the bodies of the couple had been recovered as of Thursday.

Trevon Robertson, 23; Atiba Stanisclaus, 25; and Ron Mitchell, 30, face two counts of “capital murder by intentionally causing the death of Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said.

The authorities from police forces in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have given different ages and name spellings for the escapees.

The men were also charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping; Mr. Stanisclaus is also facing a rape charge, the police said, but no details were offered on those accusations. The three men made their first court appearance on Thursday, and are due back on March 27. The Royal Grenada Police Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The police had said in a statement released on Feb. 22 that three men who escaped from a prison in Grenada on Feb. 18 and made their way to St. Vincent using a yacht that had been docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

The prisoners were recaptured on Feb. 21, the same day that the couple’s yacht was found. At the time, the police said they were “currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process.”

At a news conference on Feb. 26 , Commissioner Don McKenzie of the Royal Grenada Police Force that “information suggests that, while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants.”

During a Feb. 26 news conference , Junior Simmons, superintendent of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, said the joint investigation into the disappearance with Grenada police was ongoing, and he said the couple was presumed dead.

The investigation revealed that while sailing from Grenada, “the suspects committed several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple,” he said.

The couple, who were married for 27 years, were “veteran cruisers,” according to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , a nonprofit that brings together a community of sailors engaged in long-distance cruising on their boats. The couple were longtime members, the organization said in a statement, and “they both contributed to building the S.D.S.A.”

In a joint family statement posted on the association’s website on Feb. 27, Nick Buro, the son of Ms. Brandel, and Bryan Hendry, the son of Mr. Hendry, said that “if we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of,” the message said. “Sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family — that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts.”
