EAST SIDE — A day-long open house for local boaters of all experience levels this weekend in East Side aims to be an accessible, fun draw for newbies to the nautical world, organizers said.

Yachtapalooza takes place 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Crowley’s Yacht Yard , 3434 E. 95th St.

The free, indoor event celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. It features free seminars and demonstrations, a pig roast, live music, a flea market Friday and Saturday and a three-day sale on nautical items from Boater’s Closet Friday-Sunday.

Organizers hope to draw 1,000 current and future mariners out to this year’s event, said Nick Fugate, sales manager at Crowley’s Yacht Yard.

Yachtapalooza will also include a boat showcase by Nautical Donations , Crowley’s charitable arm, featuring several rehabbed, budget-friendly boats for sale.

Proceeds from the boat sales will support nonprofits like the Chicago Maritime Society and the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation, Fugate said.

The Chicago Boat Show dropped its sailing portion in recent years and is planning a move to the suburbs next year , so this weekend “is probably the closest thing to a sailboat show that we’ve got in Chicago,” said Charles Szymanski, a Yachtapalooza organizer and president of the nonprofit Rainbow Races .

With a few dozen vendors and free seminars on topics like marine pumps and toilets, splicing line and rope, and applying epoxy and varnish, Yachtapalooza offers “anything you would need” to maintain a boat, Fugate said.

The seminars give attendees “the chance to use the products, put their hands on them and feel them, and learn a little more than watching a powerpoint on a screen,” he said.

The event is “the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to get into sailing, [with] questions about sailing or [wanting] to check out a sailboat for the first time,” Szymanski said.

sailor yacht club & sailing school

Rainbow Races is one of Yachtapalooza’s featured vendors, and its members will host one of the day’s seminars. The group aims to erase barriers marginalized groups may face in getting into sailing, Szymanski said.

It’s the only U.S. Sailing-sanctioned, LGBTQ+ sailing school in the country, and the only LGBTQ+ sailing organization in the Midwest, he said.

Rainbow Races’ first day of sailing school begins May 18. The group is offering a $50 early-bird discount on sailing classes through the end of April with the discount code “hydra50.” To register, click here .

The sailing world struggles with homophobia, misogyny, elitism and other forms of discrimination prevalent in other sports, Szymanski said. Rainbow Races creates a safe community around the sport which tries to counter those problems, he said.

Despite its issues, due to the collaborative nature of sailing, it’s also “probably the most friendly sports arena I’ve experienced,” Szymanski said.

“Sailing is a true team sport,” he said. “You have to trust your crewmates with your life, and you also have to support each other.

“Sailors are aware if we don’t evolve, we die … If the wind changes, you have to change with it.”

sailor yacht club & sailing school

Chicago’s sailing community is robust, particularly with groups like the Park District, local yacht clubs and Rainbow Races encouraging new people to explore the sport, Fugate said.

But with a massive lake as Chicago’s backyard and “a very strong maritime history” in the city, the community could definitely stand to grow, Szymanski said.

Yachtapalooza is a free “casual meeting of the minds” that can help spread the joy of sailing and boating and change a misperception that the community is only for the ultra-rich, Szymanski said.

Million-dollar yachts “are great to look at and to dream about, but when you get down to it, Chicago is a blue-collar city,” Szymanski said. “A lot of the folks trying to buy boats are probably younger and more [budget-conscious]. It makes this a really unique opportunity to bring people in, in a very casual, unencumbered way.”

Muskegon Yacht Club Sailing School Welcomes You

re MYC Junior Sailing Program was established in 1989, providing the unique opportunity for hundreds of children and adults to learn an exciting and challenging new skill, one that can bring a lifetime of enjoyment and personal development.

Learning to sail develops physical coordination, balance, and confidence in one’s abilities. Additionally, sailing is a mentally stimulating activity that requires strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. These skills will not only serve children and adults well in their sailing adventures but can also transfer over to other aspects of life, such as work, school, and personal relationships. Moreover, sailing instills a strong connection to the natural environment and fosters an appreciation for the beauty and power of the water.

Beginner Sailor

Sailors just starting out,  that have had a few weeks of sailing school, or are looking for a refresher would benefit from this class.

Our beginner sailors, ages 6 to 18, will learn water safety, sailing terminology, names and functions of boat parts, and points of sail.  Students will learn to rig the boat themselves.  Students will experience steering the boat, adjusting sails, and learning to sail both upwind and downwind with time on-the-water.

There is nothing like sailing for learning life lessons.  To learn to sail teaches both teamwork and independence, engineering and physics, history, and the power of the wind.  Students will experience the amazing adventure that sailing can give.

Experienced Sailor

Our experienced sailor sailing course will cover more sailing techniques and strategies for children ages 8 to 18 with previous sailing experience who are comfortable navigating a sailboat on their own.  Along with teaching the STEAM principles of sailing, lessons will cover boat handling and navigation, rigging, sail shape, and an introduction to speed  strategy.

The course is designed to provide a challenging and engaging experience for experienced sailors, while also helping them to develop new skills and strategies to enhance their sailing performance.

Applications Open for the 2024 Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup

sailor yacht club & sailing school

The Rose Cup is an invitational event open to sailors who have reached their 16th birthday but not their 21st birthday during the calendar year in which the event is held (i.e., must be born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008). The Championship features world-class coaching and serves as an outstanding training ground for young sailors who are passionate about match racing and focused on competing at the next level.

“We are very pleased to see the competitive group of applicants we have received to date and welcome additional applications for everyone interested,” said Ryan Davidson, USYMRC Committee Chair. “This years event at Corinthian Yacht Club is not one you will want to miss!”

Applications submitted by April 1 will receive preference. Request an invitation here:  https://form.jotform.com/240095124431143 . Competitors are asked to provide their top three match and fleet racing accomplishments over the past three years, and to write briefly about their experience racing on a 3-4 person keelboat.

Teams consist of crews of four, with at least one male and one female and a maximum crew weight of 660 pounds. Teams may be composed of members from different yacht clubs or sailing associations.

The Rose Cup started as an invitational youth match racing event in 2010. It was founded by members of Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California, and the Newport-Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association. Its mission is to assist in the promotion of youth match racing in the United States and improve the quality of US competitors in national and international competition.

Thanks primarily to the efforts of US Sailing Match Racing Committee Vice-Chair and five-time US Match Racing Champion, Dave Perry, US Sailing made the event one of its three match racing championships, and it officially became the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship in 2015.

Eight Bells: Sally Helme

Published on March 21st, 2024 by Assoc Editor -->

Sally Helme, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away on March 20, 2024 at the age of 70. Sally, a remarkable figure whose unwavering commitment to advancing women’s participation in sailing has left an enduring legacy. Sally was more than a sailor; she was a visionary leader who championed equality, empowerment and excellence.

Her journey began as a spirited young woman from Shelter Island sailing for her college team at Princeton; but it was her subsequent involvement that truly set her apart as she earned coveted seats on numerous boards and committees dedicated to promoting sailing.

As the first female publisher in the sailing industry, Sally’s tenure at two widely read and respected sailing magazines reshaped the narrative. She believed in the power of representation, advocating for positive depictions of women – captains, crew and adventurers – across glossy pages. Through captivating photos and insightful articles, she illuminated the challenges, triumphs and sheer joy of life on the water.

In 1994, she joined the New York Times Magazine Group as Associate Publisher. Her responsibilities spanned two iconic sailing titles: Cruising World and Sailing World Magazines. Under her leadership, these publications became essential reading for sailors worldwide. By 1998, she had ascended to the position of Publisher for both titles, a role she would hold for more than two decades.

sailor yacht club & sailing school

Sally’s influence extended beyond print; it rippled across regattas and events. As Group Publisher, she oversaw not only Cruising World and Sailing World, but also the National Offshore One Design (NOOD) regattas, an integral part of the sailing calendar. In 2020, Sally transitioned to the esteemed role of Publisher Emeritus under the Bonnier Group.

Sally, who has served on the boards of Sail Newport and US Sailing, was a founding member of International Women in Boating, a marine industry professional-development organization for women. She also worked with Offshore Sailing School CEO Doris Colgate to create and sponsor NWSA’s Take the Helm series of women’s educational and networking events. A past President of Sail America, she was also a Vice President of Marine Marketers of America.

Sally understood that sailing wasn’t just about wind and tides; it was about freedom, confidence and the bonds forged under open skies. As a past president of Sail America, she tirelessly advocated for sailing-related products and services. Her impact reverberated through organizations like Sail Newport and US Sailing, where her wisdom and passion guided decisions that shaped our maritime landscape. As a true leader within the National Sailing Hall of Fame for more than 15 years, Sally tirelessly worked to honor the legacy of sailing’s pioneers, reminding us that the skills learned on the water carry into life lessons for all.

Sally was an important leader in the marine industry and the sport of sailing, her spirit, her resilience and her unwavering belief in the transformative power of sailing will be remembered. Sally leaves behind a wake of inspiration, urging us all to hoist our sails, embrace the horizon and navigate life’s currents with courage and grace. She will be missed.

Fundraiser planned for gladstone sailing school.

GLADSTONE — The Spring Social, held annually by the Gladstone Lions Club and this year in conjunction with the Bay de Noc Lions Club, is set to raise funds for the Gladstone Sail School. The event will take place Saturday, April 20, at the Terrace Bluff Country Club.

Troy Drebenstedt, now a seasonal employee with the City of Gladstone Parks and Recreation Department, was responsible for reviving the sailing program that had been conducted in Gladstone years ago.

“It was a staple of the community for decades,” said Drebenstedt.

When he moved to the area five years ago, he began inquiring about the Gladstone Sail School he’d heard about so that his own children and nieces and nephews might benefit. He found that it had been “mothballed for about a decade,” as he put it, and was handed the dusty reins — or in this case, lines.

Drebenstedt said that the boats dedicated to the purpose were from the 1970s and falling apart. Those were used for the first year of the restored school’s inaugural class of eight kids. “We’ve been making a concerted effort over the last three years to improve the program,” Drebenstedt explained.

The second year, a little bit of funding allowed for the purchase of a couple used boats from a school out in Boston. Drebenstedt and his wife personally drove out to Massachusetts to collect them.

Just last year, three more boats were donated by Alex Sundstrom, a member of the Escanaba Yacht Club.

In just the short amount of time since Drebenstedt committed to raising the Gladstone Sail School back off the ground, the program has expanded. The first year, just a general, basic course was offered. Now, said Drebenstedt, they’ve been able to branch out into multiple classes, made possible by the newer, larger boats and increased community interest. Students who took part in classes three years in a row have been able to move up to instruct an intermediate-level course, and a member of the community who raced collegiately teaches “advanced sailing skills, tactics and techniques for sail racing,” Drebenstedt reported.

Near the end of the season two years ago, John Lindberg took students out for a ride on Cathexis, his 45-foot catamaran built by the late Irving DeRoeck, a businessman, sailor and boatbuilder from Gladstone. Last year, kids from the Gladstone Sail School again joined Lindberg aboard Cathexis in the Frostbite Race — the last Escanaba Yacht Club sailing race of the year, held in September.

The number of participants in the program more than quadrupled in just a few years. 2023 brought 30 kids and six parents to the Gladstone Sail School.

The course fee is set to be reasonable, and a scholarship is available for those who might have trouble meeting it. To make classes family-friendly, rates are in place for one person, two people, and three or more.

“We really want this to be inclusive to everybody,” Drebenstedt said, adding that the aim is to continue the school’s growth and improvement.

“Our drive this year is to get funding for a new sail shed where we can store our equipment but also use it as a classroom. We’re also looking at upgrading a lot of our equipment to make sailing more accessible for people with cognitive or physical handicaps,” he said.

To this end, the Lions Clubs of Gladstone and Bay de Noc has designated the Gladstone Sail School the recipient of funds raised at this year’s Spring Social, which is sponsored by Baybank and Upper Peninsula State Bank.

The fundraiser kicks off at the Terrace Bluff Country Club at 7 p.m. on April 20, with a $15 admission collected upon entry. Once inside, guests may choose to take part in 50/50 raffles, a silent auction, bucket raffles, and two separate $20 card raffles for firearms. A performance by the Jam Band begins at 8 p.m.

For more information about the Spring Social or the Lions Clubs, interested parties may contact Bill Sjoquist at (906)280-3740.

When details about this year’s courses become available, they will be on the City of Gladstone’s Parks and Recreation page, and sign-up sheets will be distributed at local schools.

Best Summer Weekend

Sailing is a very social sport and attracts great people. You will have fun, meet other sailors and discover new friends.

Our student instructor ratio is 4 to 1. And we normally teach between 5 and 10 boats every weekend. So you will be part of a group of 20 to 40 students who are all learning to sail. At the end of each day, we encourage you to hang out and have a cold drink. This is when you can really savor the sailing vibe, meet more people and develop a great love for this sport.

After graduating from Basic Sailing, you will be ready for your next steps. One of the best options is to join Manhattan Yacht Club. This will connect you with the harbor’s largest group of sailors and you will have something to do every weekend for the rest of the summer. MYC has great cruising and racing programs, plus a floating clubhouse in the harbor.

You can also sign up for advanced courses such as Basic Coastal Cruising. Then in winter, you can join your fellow graduates at “Manhattan Caribbean Week” which is one week of fun, sun and sailing in the British Virgin Islands.

It all starts with you here and now. Just sign up before the course you want sells out.

Our Locations

In summer, we teach in New York Harbor. You will be sailing in front of the Statue of Liberty and skyline of Manhattan. Bring your camera for some super-cool selfies.

We have 2 summer meet-up locations where students connect with their instructors.

  • Jersey City MEET UP – This is our headquarters and home of the Manhattan Yacht Club, the largest sailing organization in New York Harbor. Our fleet is based at Liberty Harbor Marina. We have beautiful decks overlooking the water, plus picnic tables, grass, flagpoles, games, tents, BBQs & a sailing atmosphere where you can relax with new friends before and after sailing.
  • Manhattan MEET UP – Our second meet-up location is in Lower Manhattan at the Occulus. This is where you meet one of our instructors who will escort you across the river on the PATH where you will discover huge marinas filled with sailboats. This is NY Harbor’s sailing capital! It’s an easy and short 8 minute walk from the PATH station to the Manhattan Yacht Club.

In winter, we teach in the Caribbean with most classes in the British Virgin Islands. This is where you can enroll in higher level courses such as Basic Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Chartering and Catamaran Chartering.
