The village of Woods Hole at the southwest tip of Falmouth was a whaling and fishing community before it became known for marine research and tourism. The village developed into a scientific community in the late 19th century when Spencer Baird, first US Fish Commissioner established a summer research center in Woods Hole. It is currently the site of several government organizations such as NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center that started the community in 1871, the US Coast Guard, and the US Geological Survey. Several private marine institutions were also founded in Woods Hole, such as the renowned Wood’s Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Woods Hole Research Center, and the Sea Education Association, among others. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute is also known for discovering the Titanic in 1985 while on a secret military mission. The Woods Hole Science Aquarium is a small public aquarium established in 1885, making it America’s oldest marine aquarium. The aquarium’s missions as envisioned by founder Spencer Baird, were to support fisheries research and to educate the public about marine life and marine science; in the late 20th century, conservation was added. It displays about 140 marine animal species located in northeast and mid-Atlantic waters. The Aquarium is occasionally home to rescued seals, though currently there are none. Woods Hole Science Aquarium is owned by the Federal government and operated by NOAA Fisheries.

Falmouth’s photogenic Nobska Lighthouse is also located in Woods Hole. This landmark stands at the southern tip of the Cape, as an iconic symbol of Falmouth. The historic lighthouse tower has been completely restored and the former lighthouse keeper’s house is being transformed into a museum open to the public, thanks to civic groups like Friends of Nobska, Falmouth Community Preservation Fund, Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund and many other donors. The Woods Hole Yacht Club was formed in 1896 to encourage yachting. The Yacht Club’s low-key, diverse community shares a love of the ocean, boating and racing. The historic Woods Hole Golf Course was built in 1899, and expanded to 18 holes in 1919. Much of Woods Hole encircles the enclosed harbor of Eel Pond; a drawbridge located at the harbor’s mouth allows boat traffic to come and go. The Woods Hole Strait is known for a serious tidal current; be sure to check tides before approaching the harbor. Moorings are available for transient rental in Great Harbor and Eel Pond through local vendors including Woods Hole Marine and Woods Hole Yacht Club. Woods Hole Marine can accommodate vessels up to 50-ft and features 30amp/110v service, fresh water, trash service, and mechanics on staff. Transient slips are first come/first served during season—call ahead. Woods Hole Yacht Club is a private marina that can accommodate vessels to 65-ft; dock depth is 6-ft. The marina offers fresh water, restrooms and showers. Dock & Dine is available for small boats (under 16-ft), that can tie-up at the Landfall Restaurant, between Eel Pond harbor entrance and the Steamship Authority docks. Larger boats can take a spot along the bulkhead in Eel Pond entrance or check with Woods Hole Marine for transient slips. Other eateries in the area are Captain Kidd’s, The Fishmongers Café, and Pie in the Sky.

Main Street Falmouth is packed with dining options, including ethnic choices like Indian and Thai. Tree-lined, pedestrian-friendly streets lead to the historic Village Green which is surrounded by majestic homes in Colonial and Federalist style architecture that were once owned by wealthy sea captains of whaling and fishing days. The streets are lined with shops, galleries, restaurants, ice-cream, candy, and souvenir specialty shops and amusements for kids. Falmouth is today both “hip” and historical. The Farmer’s Brewery & Tasting Room features Bad Martha Beer from Martha’s Vineyard, the latest Cape Cod craft beer. Falmouth Road Race, established in 1973 and held annually in August, is a 7-mile running racecourse traditionally from the drawbridge in Woods Hole, past Nobska Light and along the iconic Surf Drive Beach through Falmouth Harbor to finish by the ball field at Falmouth Heights.

Though not a marathon (it’s only 7-miles) Falmouth Road Race has gained respect as a top American racing event. Another great fitness attraction is the Shining Sea Bikeway. The town of Falmouth purchased the right-of-way of the old New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad route that ran from Buzzards Bay through North and West Falmouth, around Woods Hole and into Falmouth station. The town tore up the tracks and opened the 3.3-mile Shining Sea Bikeway in 1975. In 2009, a new 7.9-mile section was added, extending the Bikeway to North Falmouth. The Bikeway also features a Bike Fix-it Station, complete with tools. The Bikeway is also frequented by runners and inline skaters during the summer season.
