We visited with a group of 14 for a special occasion. We were very disappointed by the experience. The service was slow and inefficient e.g. did not take drinks orders for everyone, missed some drinks, no topping up of drinks, difficulty getting anyone’s attention, no... recommendations to have sides (when mains small) etc etc. the portions were very small and food was not memorable. The kids fish and chips were brought out first which was appreciated. Kids menus had colouring in but no pens / crayons brought out which caused a few meltdowns. There were some but had to wander the restaurant to find ourselves. Location was good and decor nice but a bit mixed with people dressed up for a dining experience and other people wandering around barefoot in wetsuits to use the toilets. I guess when you are spending a fair amount on the food and drinks, I would expect more of a positive experience and not leaving disappointed. I did email the restaurant directly afterwards to outline my concerns but have not heard back. Just an acknowledgement would have been good! Anyway my first negative review ever but hope it helps them to improve. More

We have had coffee, lunch and drinks on a number of occasions here. The food is reasonable, if not light on portions relative to the prices. However, the over-riding impression is one of very disorganised service. They have a "system" whereby no one specific waitperson... is allocated to the table. As a result, on our various visits, we have had three people in quick succession all asking for our orders, not knowing they have already been placed. At the other end of the spectrum, we have been ignored for around 15 minutes when waitstaff have been clearly available, and when finally catching a waiter's attention, his manner was very curt. Embarrassing, as we had guests with us. Based on other aspects of this establishment, such as the table settings with fresh flowers, the lovely environment with outdoor tables, genuine friendliness and engagement from almost all the staff, we expected a more professional, organised system of service. We hope this can be addressed with some urgency, as we otherwise enjoy it, especially the location and outlook over the harbour. More

What a wonderful location. Great views and a plus being lots of parking. A warm welcome but you could only describe the service as amateur. The food was good..ish but certainly fully priced in fact probably over priced. My wife thought her salmon fillet at... $30 was rather small. My burrata was large but not very tasty. More

Such a beautiful location, but the food and Service are terrible! We don’t mind paying 15% surcharge on a Public Holiday, but we do then expect a reasonable service. The coffee’s we ordered finally arrived just before the food. The eggs and bacon were well... below average and looked totally unappetizing. The eggs were served on two huge slices of Sourdough, barely toasted, no butter, the Bacon was steamed and very fatty. Pancakes were OK but nothing great. Will not go back. More

6 of us went for lunch at noon. we were offered coffees 15 minutes after arriving and notified of the additions to the menu. We did not order coffee! Service was non existent, portions minute and over priced. One $28 measly pie with half a... spoon of mushy peas, no chips or salad, the pie was no better than a $5.00 Big Ben Pie. Small glass of ginger beer $6.00 which is $1.50 in the supermarket per bottle! It took ages for the meal to be served, when there was only a few tables occupied. Not worth the time to write any more. Prices overly expensive for lack of service and quantity. Never again! Side order arrived after all had finished the meal, it was sent back. No wonder there were so few customers. More

This is a new eatery and one worth trying. The location is spectacular, a lovely spacious feel, altho very noisy, so may be an issue for someone with hearing problems. The food was delicious, altho the portion sizes are small - I was fine, but... for hungry chaps definitely not enough, especially at the prices. Lovely staff, although maybe need a little more knowledge on some of the dishes, not their fault I would say, but the training given by management. We went in the evening, I would also like to try a brunch during the day and have the opportunity to sit outside. More

Great location, lovely outlook. Orders the corn fritters which was ok only. Also three small slices of gluten free bread $9 and no butter, a tad on the high side, when we buy a loaf of the same for $10. Coffee was lovely. Service ok.... Would we return? Probably not, shame really. More

Friendly service but very disappointing food. Very few options for vegetarians. The risotto was literally a plate of rice and peas-this was returned to the kitchen and refunded. Fish and chips very average. Such a shame we’d heard good things about this place -but we... won’t be returning. More

Been 2 days in a row as the location is so good. Yesterday had breakfast and not once in 45 minutes do we get any proactive service. Had to get our own water, menus and then get up to find someone to order food and... coffee. Today we ordered coffee and 35 minutes later after chasing twice we got told they lost out order. More

First time there as a local. Was worried about the average reviews everywhere which I think are very unfair hence this review. Beautiful location - lovely views would be great place to take tourists for lunch. It’s quite pricey although I saw a lot of... tables having the $72 platter between them which looked like excellent value and would feed 4 adults easy. We shared the mussel croquettes for entree which was a large delicious dish and would be sufficient as a small main. Then I had fish and chips at $29 which was delicious teraki and husband had market fish / snapper - at $39 which he refused to share. Pricey but yum. Apparently is happy hour at 3pm. Service was perfect. I recommend this place. If money is an issue get the platter, sit outside with a couple of beers More

This is a great position, especially on a fine day. Right by waters edge. Top atmosphere. Arrived around 11:30 am to find nearly all of the unoccupied tables had "reserved" sign on them. Staff of little assistance in finding suitable seating. And, as other reviewers... have commented, had to fetch our own water and menus. Slow to take orders too. Good selections from menus for breakfast (to 12 noon) and lunch (from 12 noon). However, although it was almost noon when orders taken, wait staff couldn't cope with us ordering from the lunch menu. Most peculiar. The mushroom dish and the banana pancake were great. Coffees ok but served in 'tiny' cups. Would return but maybe book in advance with timing to suit menu preference. More

We chose Akarana Eatery for a special occasion. The view is superb, the food was very good but the service was really poor and made for a frustrating experience which rather spoilt our happy occasion. Off-hand, dis-interested, sour-faced waiters set the mood followed by lost... orders in ‘the system’, forgotten requests for simple things like salt and the grumpy manner just kept coming. It was embarrassing for my guests and it was unpleasant and uncomfortable. It is one of the best locations in Auckland and I’m not sure I will ever bother coming back. It’s not cheap but you get friendlier and more efficient service in a cheap pub! More

The view and location are stunning. The restaurant and service really let this place down. 45 min wait for our meals, no water offered. Cold fish and chips (although edible) for $36, lemon was rotten and dried out so I asked for some fresh- a... slice (not a wedge) was brought to me in the serving staff's hand. Chicken was overcooked and dry. After our meals no dessert or coffee was offered for over 15 mins so we left and went elsewhere. Could be great but offering food at high end prices you would expect top notch food and service. More

Booked for a table of 4 for lunch. As noted by other reviewers (wished I had read the reviews before we went!) the service was non-existant. In fact the lack of attention was just rude. Food was average - slices for dessert were lacking in... taste. We nearly walked out as we waited over 50mins to get any service. By the end of our lunch we wished we had! I gave them the benefit of the doubt thinking that the lack of service may be due to the Covid19 situation and the requirement for social distancing, but reading these reviews it is clear that this is a common theme. Despite the fantastic location, we will not be back. More

As per the title, the location is lovely, although watch out for ridiculous parking charges, look for the free parking just outside. The food is nice, not fantastic, but nice. The restaurant has tiled or concrete floors and Gard walls so the sound can get... loud quite easily. When its busy (and they often have functions) it is very noisy. There is a lovely area outside to eat and kids can play there too. Prices are reasonable, maybe a little on the high side. Overall worth a visit and I hope as the business gets feedback they will deal with some of the suggestions listed by others on improvements they can make regarding the service. More

There is a great view from this place. A number of people suppose that the staff is terrific here. The professional service is a big benefit of this spot. You will pay reasonable prices for your meal. The peaceful atmosphere has been highlighed by the guests. But this restaurant hasn't gained a high rating from Google users.

New Opening: Nic Watt's Akarana Eatery Is Okahu Bay's New Waterfront Dining Destination

Chef and restaurateur Nic Watt is set to open another crowd-pleasing eatery and this time it's all about the sea.

Perched on the picturesque waterfront location of Okahu Bay, Akarana Eatery has been inspired by Nic's love of seafood and boating. And with the stunning views out to Waitemata Harbour Nic says they're Auckland's best it will be a hard-to-beat spot in summer.

The all-day eatery and bar will be open to the public from September 7 and is part of the first phase opening of the Hyundai Marine Sports Centre, a new facility and home of the historic Royal Akarana Yacht Club.

So while you're out for a paddleboard or a sail, the well-seasoned team will be whipping up a menu described as "fresh, seasonal, and approachable".

Seven days a week, the 153-seat eatery will dish out Allpress coffee, Kohu Rd icecream, and a selection of grab-and-go items from freshly baked croissants to baguettes as well as an a la carte menu with a strong seafood lean, with fish and chips, freshly shucked oysters, clams and tua tuas, and whole roasted Kaipara Harbour flounder cooked in the woodfired oven.

A lamb shank pie will cater to meatier cravings, alongside a children's menu of pizzas and mini-mains to keep ankle biters quiet.

The eatery is pushing sustainability, so there are taps for both wine and beer in an effort to reduce the number of bottles used. Nic and the team have also sourced top-quality, sustainable New Zealand seafood for the menu.

"To be able to do something so close to the Waitemata harbour and focus on the provenance of the seafood was, for me, really special," Nic says.

"It’s also an opportunity to showcase some of my childhood being a third-generation boatie. You can literally see and taste the salt water within a few metres from where you will be dining."

Celebrated chef Nic Watt and the Royal Akarana Yacht Club have partnered at the Hyundai Marine Sports Centre on the shores of Okahu Bay, Auckland  to open Akarana Eatery.

Situated on the water’s edge with circling views of the Waitemata Harbour, Akarana Eatery has been developed as part of the Hyundai Marine Sports Centre, the new home of the historic Royal Akarana Yacht Club.

The all-day eatery and bar opened to the public on September 7 in the first opening phase of the new sports centre.  The new facility aims to provide the wider community with the opportunity to actively participate or spectate in a wide range of marine based activities.

Akarana Eatery brings together fresh, seasonal and approachable dining inspired by its nautical surroundings. It offers a relaxed menu to cater for all occasions available from breakfast through to dinner. For seven days a week, the 153-seat eatery allows diners to grab a coffee, ice-cream, or selection of counter items – from sweet pastries and savoury items to freshly made baguettes – as well as a seasonal à la carte menu that keeps it simple with classics such as fresh-cut fish & chips, a selection of shucked oysters, clams or tua tua, through to house-made lamb shank pies. The centrally located wood fired oven will serve pizza, roasted whole Kaipara Harbour flounder to share, as well as wood roasted arrow squid with garlic, lemon and parsley butter, and a kids focused menu is also available.

Importantly, sustainability is at the heart of Akarana Eatery. With a focus on reducing bottles used in the restaurant industry and consistent with the Hyundai Marine Centre’s commitment to sustainability, taps for both wine and beer have been installed. Nic Watt and the team have also sourced top-quality and sustainable New Zealand seafood for the menu.

Considered one of New Zealand’s leading internationally-acclaimed chefs, Nic Watt’s career has gone from strength to strength. With a background working with international restaurant groups Zuma and Roka, Nic Watt has made a name for himself in New Zealand following the success of celebrated Auckland restaurant, MASU, as well as multiple other restaurants. Chef Nic Watt said of his latest venture: “The Royal Akarana Yacht Club is a premier sailing club and the all-new Hyundai Marine Sports Centre is arguably the top waterfront location in Auckland, perched overlooking the Waitemata Harbour towards Rangitoto.”

Royal Akarana Yacht Club

Established in 1895, Royal Akarana Yacht Club is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most accomplished yachts clubs in both keel boat and dinghy sailing classes.

It is considered the home of blue water sailing and hosts an array of other marine-based activities including a successful Sailing Academy for kids and adults which has created world champion sailors. 

The new Hyundai Marine Sports Centre opened in September 2019 and provides purpose built sailing, marine sports, marine education and hospitality facilities including a waterfront cafe and bar. It was the perfect location for the 2019 Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 world championships.

The club sails and caters for Optimists, O'pen Skiff, RS Feva, 420, 12ft skiff, 18ft Skiff, M-Class, 29er, 49er, and Flying Fifteen classes.  Keelboats are accommodated in racing and cruising divisions with an emphasis on passage, coastal and offshore events.

WATERFRONT VENTURE

Nic Watt and the Royal Akarana Yacht Club have partnered to open the Akarana Eatery. Located in Okahu Bay’s waterfront, and situated right on the water’s edge, Akarana Eatery has been developed as a part of the Hyundai Marine Sports Centre.

The eatery will open as a part of the first phase of the Marine Sports Centre’s opening, a centre that is designed to encourage the community to participate in more aquatic activities.

The Akarana Eatery menu is fresh and seasonal and offers a range of selections for any dining occasion. It will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, for seven days a week, and offers 153 seats for diners. In addition to an a la carte menu, the woodfired pizza oven will be serving up fresh pizzas, with the counter offerings including pastries, savouries and fresh sandwiches.

In addition to the food offerings, the Akarana Eatery will also serve beer and wine on tap, as a part of the restaurant’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

“The eater has been designed as a relaxed destination that is not only perfect for sun-drenched Auckland days, but a destination to be enjoyed with family and friends, and on to show-off to international guests the City of Sails,” said Nic Watt. “I come from a long boating lineage and have grown up on the Waitemata Harbour, so this is a location that is very special to me. Akarana Eatery brings to life my love of being out on the harbour and celebrates the abundance of fresh seafood we have access to in New Zealand.”

“I have endeavoured to bring my food philosophy strongly to the table at Akarana Eatery to ensure that every dish is stand-alone, packed with flavour, always focusing on enhancing the natural essence of the hero ingredient and allowing the food to speak for itself.”

The Marine Sports Centre’s function facility is set to open in November, with additional openings planned for early 2020.
