The S&S, Swan 48s are in a class of their own. Now more than 40 years old their design endures and they are considered one of the classic sailboats ever designed and built.

KARA MIA has been fortunate to be the recipient of a number of very caring owners including the preset one. The teak decks were replaced some time ago and have plenty of thickness left in them. The engine was replaced, so too were the navigation electronics. The interior wood work is still in top condition and the upholstery has recently been replaced.

KARA MIA is in full commission and ready to sail the oceans of the world.

GENERAL ARRANGEMENT

Sleeps a total of 8. 2 in each of the 2 sleeping cabins. 2 in the 2 pilot bunks in the main saloon and 2 more on the settees in the saloon. Varnished, hand rubbed, Burmese teak over marine ply furniture below deck. Varnished, hand rubbed, teak and holly over marine ply cabin sole throughout. Laminated teak door jams and fiddle rails. Vinyl over boards headliner.

FORWARD CABIN

2 x single lifting wooden bunk beds, 1 each side. Storage under each bunk. Access to chain locker forward. Steps located on aft bulkhead from cabin to deck level. Sliding hatch over. Hanging locker aft to starboard. Cockpit table stored in overhead.

FORWARD HEAD

RIG AND SAILS

UK mainsail with 3 reefs (2011). UK, 150% roller Genoa (2011). Spare mainsail by Hood (2004) which is lightly used and also in very good condition. Spinnaker, blue and white, (approximately 15 years old) very lightly used. 3 additional roller genoas from 100% to 130% which are in average to good condition 4 storm sails which attach to the baby stay halyard. Most old except 1 of them (2011) has barely been used. Then there is a trysail which is about 20 years old, believed to be never used.

In 1972 this Swan 48 was delivered, new, to a New York owner and she was then named KATE.

During the 1970s and early 80s she was based in the British Virgin Islands.

In the 80s she was sold to her second owner and was then called ORACLE. ORACLE returned to New England and was kept at the New York Yacht Club.

In the late 1980s she was bought by her third owner, renaming her SPECTRA. This owner was also based in New York but was of Turkish origin. In 1995 SPECTRA was sailed to Turkey. She was kept there until 2003 when the present owner bought this boat. During that period he used the boat for his summer holidays in Turkey and Greece. Here a significant refit took place in 2010 before sailing to the Caribbean.

There are records of the boat competing in the New York to Bermuda race frequently throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

Herreshoff Refit Underway at G&B

After winning the 2014 North American Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge for Best Overall “Vintage Division” the 1905 Herreshoff NY 30 CARA MIA’s owner Alfred Slanetz has commissioned Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railroad (G&B) in Vineyard Haven, MA to undertake a thorough refit this Winter season.

Reprinted from G&B – “We enjoy the opportunity for a fun winter project such as this. “Cara Mia” will receive some deck repairs and re-canvasing, and we will address some mast partner issues. After removing the house, coamings, and deck hardware, the lack of deck camber became very apparent. The ends of the boat were close to the correct camber, but the mid- 2/3rds were as much as an 1-1/4″ low. Camber template across the cockpit area side deck.”

“The decision was made to remove the fir deck and replace all the deck beams reproducing the correct camber from the original Nathanael Herreshoff drawing. Having this sort access allows us to more easily replace the stem and breasthook, transom, and lodging knees which all have had several repairs affixed through the years and are currently soft. The vertical grain fir deck will be re-used as it was replaced earlier and is good condition. The stem and all deck beams are shaped and ready for installation. The transom has been removed and the new one is being laminated into shape.”

“The existing stem had been repaired a number of times with a lot of fasteners, and was rotting from the top down. The breast hook situated behind the stem will be replaced as well.”

Historical:

Eighteen Herreshoff New York 30s were designed and built by the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. in the winter of 1905 for members of the NY Yacht Club. As testament to the longevity of this design, today twelve of the original eighteen boats are still being raced, sailed, restored and enjoyed by there owners.

IF you are in the market for a 40-50 foot motor yacht then this 2018 42 Azimut should be a must see. The boat is powered by twin Cummins QSB 6.9s, one engine just was completely replaced with transferable warranty and the other has 350 hrs with a recent 1k hr service. The boat has many options including a Xenta joystick, upgraded stereo system, and a hydraulic swim platform just to name a few. The seller also just replaced all the upholstery, ceramic coated it, and did a recent bottom job. This includes your username, name, email address, address, telephone and mobile number, as well as your company name and affiliation (if applicable). After you log in to your new MarineTraffic account, we kindly ask you to reset your password for added security. Of course, you will continue to be able to use your FleetMon account for the time being (we will let you know the next steps about this at a later date).

Rest assured, all your subscriptions, whether monthly or yearly, will be matched accordingly. Your My Fleets and Tags, along with your Credit Points, will also be transferred to your new MarineTraffic account. Additionally, we will assist you in smoothly transferring your My Zones.

With your new MarineTraffic account, you will have access to all its features and services during the remaining duration of your FleetMon subscription. If your contract with FleetMon has already expired, there's no need to worry. We are offering a free trial period of two months, allowing you to experience and explore all the fantastic features MarineTraffic has to offer before deciding on a suitable subscription plan. If you encounter any issues or have any questions, contact our support team directly. They will be more than happy to assist you with your new MarineTraffic account.

We would also like to express our appreciation to the photo community for the incredible photos you have contributed over the past few years. Your contributions are invaluable, and we want to ensure that your efforts are preserved. Therefore, we kindly ask you not to transfer the photos manually. DUBOIS/FITZROY SAILING YACHT MIA CARA FOR SALE WITH NORTHROP & JOHNSON

The remarkable 127-foot (38.8m) sailing superyacht MIA CARA is now listed for sale with Northrop & Johnson Yacht Broker Bill Titus. The yacht is priced at $7,250,000.

Built by Fitzroy Yachts and designed by Dubois in 2006, MIA CARA was designed for both day-sailing and world exploration. This powerful and beautiful sailing yacht features exterior styling by Dubious Naval Architecture; Redman Whitely Dixon Ltd is responsible for her comfortable and lavish interior spaces. Functionality reigns supreme aboard MIA CARA but refined style, safety and comfort all were high on the priority list during her build.

Ten guests are accommodated aboard MIA CARA in four impressive staterooms. The aft master suite is outfitted with a king berth, a vanity, large closet, an en-suite bath and a settee. The VIP with a queen berth, desk and seating, twin guest stateroom and double stateroom all are also located on the lower deck and all have en-suite bathrooms. Guests can access the accommodations via the lower salon.

The interior of MIA CARA is simply stunning. An elegant atmosphere is courtesy of satin-varnished English walnut and sumptuous furnishings. The upper salon area features formal indoor dining at a large walnut table that is flanked by large windows to provide guests with impressive views as they enjoy their meals. Forward of this space is the yacht’s navigation, but with the push of a button, the instrumentation disappears to create a buffet. The upper salon also offers a full-service bar. MIA CARA’s lower salon is welcoming and the ideal place for relaxing while aboard. It is adorned with built-in seating a large coffee table and a sofa. The space is further enhanced by hull portlights that provide ample ambient lighting and views. The yacht’s galley is located forward of the lower salon and is fully outfitted with the latest culinary kit, much to the delight of the yacht’s chef.

On deck, MIA CARA has a variety of spaces for guests to enjoy open-air dining and socializing. A deck dining salon is covered by a hardtop and features built-in seating. A variety of lounges and sunpads are available on deck for guests to enjoy and accessing the water is a breeze thanks to the yacht’s drop-down swim platform.

Our Great Loop Experience

IVY Yacht Club, Peoria (Aug 13-15)

Today it will be Ottawa to Peoria on the Illinois River – and to The IVY Club (The Illinois Valley Yacht Club).

The river was abundant with white pelicans, ducks, geese and gulls.

After our experience at Starved Rock Marina in 2016 (shallow and rustic), we decided to boat right on by it this time.  But we had to stop at Starved Rock Lock.  The lock master was kind enough to let us lock through and tie off to “River Eagle”.

We were asked to tie off to a rusty old mooring cell and allow the tow to enter the lock first.  While waiting, an eagle swooped down in front of our boat to catch a fish and a blue heron was fishing on the shoreline.

We were able to pull in to his port and tie off.

Santa was not happy about the close proximity to the barge and tow boat!

We pass many little towns and communities on the riverbanks.

The flying Asian carp were very active, just as in our last journey through this part of the river.  Only this time a very large one jumped aboard – to his chagrin!  The commotion in the cockpit scared the bejeebers out of Karen and Ron!

There were four other looper boats at IVY,  “Coconuts”, “Miss Daisy”, “Michigan Girl”,  and one we didn’t get to meet.  Karen and Sandy got docktails started.

We joined Sandy and Bru for a scenic tour of Peoria Heights in their rental car.  We toured downtown and ran some errands.  Peoria is the international headquarters of Caterpillar which brings an upscale community to Grandview Drive on the  river.

…and had dinner in a historic Presbyterian church – turned restaurant and micro-brewery – “Obed & Isaac’s”.

The interior architecture was majestic.

…..including the restrooms with grandiose marble archways and statues!

Back at home (The IVY Club), we enjoyed the all you can eat taco bar, the free candy jar in the bar, and our last dinner in the club.

And Steve, the bartender, made us go-cups of Brandy Alexanders frozen with ice cream – for us to enjoy our next night “on anchor”.  We had to hide them from Bru!
