Gipsy: Otam Yachts’ first foray into the slow lane

Do you ever get the feeling that a yacht’s layout is so familiar, you could move around with your eyes closed? That would not be the case with the 35 metre  Otam yacht Gipsy . The semi-displacement yacht built at an Italian yard known for composite speedsters is not your “ordinary Otam” or superyacht for that matter.

In the 1980s, Otam built hulls for the adrenaline-loving clients of Magnum and then launched its own line of fast boats. Refreshingly retro in their linear design, the yachts within the Millennium series share a fondness for the 50s (knots that is). Gianfranco Zanoni, CEO since 2009, has set several speed records in offshore racing.

One of the Otams to attract attention in recent years is the raven-colored Crazy Too , an 18 metre tender to a superyacht delivered in 2014 with a top speed somewhere in the neighbourhood of 55 knots.  Mr. Brown , a 25 metre powerhouse built in composite, burst onto the scene in 2015. She reached 54 knots in sea trials, leaving the yard wanting to squeeze a couple more knots out of her four MTUs and surface drives.

The yard is currently building the fourth Otam 80. She has two MTU engines versus four, Arnesons by Twin Disc and an extra skylight to lighten up the forward cabin. One of the challenges the yard has set for itself is to attain low decibel levels — 50 decibels at 50 knots.

Gipsy , the first aluminium boat to be built at Otam, is literally a change of pace. An industrialist who likes classic rally cars, the client was an experienced boater looking to build for the first time. He set the hull’s maximum length to fit his slip (just a little under 35 metres). He also wanted space to entertain, as well as privacy. His personal preference was toward a trawler-like style. Otam, meantime, while excited to venture into a different market and more than willing to accommodate a close client, wasn’t quite ready to let go of the brand’s fundamentals.

Resolving that puzzle on Gipsy fell to an immensely talented designer with more than 250 yachts to his credit, Florence-based Tommaso Spadolini . Born into a family of architects and an early sailor, Spadolini began working on boats with his father before graduating from architecture school, and he’s never looked back. In recent years, his designs have included the Rossinavi-built superyacht Numptia (now High Power III ) and the superbly understated Aslec 4 .

The first meeting, at Otam’s office in 2014, resulted in preliminary sketches and a rough layout for the boat that would become Gipsy . Then, Spadolini requested to meet the owner at his home. “This is very important because many things can be learned about the personality, the character and the style of the client,” says the designer, who gleaned valuable information from seeing the owner’s expansive and pristine garage and contemporary, uncluttered villa.

He came out of this encounter with a clear goal for the yacht’s interior, “modern with a touch of ‘design culture.’” He translated this idea into the pleasing décor on board Gipsy , which is luxurious in a discreet way — no bling, jarring colours or surfaces refracting light in unnatural ways.

“The interior common denominator is the use of light or bleached wood coupled with tapestry in pastel shades of gray and dove-white. Throughout Gipsy , contemporary art is integrated with the interior design; since the yacht is lived on year-round, a lot of storage space is obtained behind each piece of fixed furniture,” explains the designer, who has fondness for wood, in part, because of its historical place in the nautical world.

The wood on Gipsy is oak, treated in different ways: a more “warm and silky” finish for the guest areas and a bit more rustic in the working spaces (for the sake of longevity). The buttery feel of leather adds to the muted atmosphere, from sofas and chairs to wall panels by Poltrona Frau. Light fixtures from Cantalupi illuminate key areas; mini cascades of white light dripping on interior steps are a delightful and practical detail.

From the aft deck, stairs lead straight up to a side deck. The natural inclination is to continue ahead to another set of stairs about midway along the superstructure on the starboard side. Climb these, and you find yourself on Gipsy’s spacious superyacht sundeck . A mast at the centre conceals a day head, while seating is dispersed forward and aft. Anchored by a small round Jacuzzi, the deck is a lovely spot in the sunshine.

Without noticing it, you have bypassed the owner’s deck . Spadolini has carved out a suite that encompasses a bright bedroom, dressing room, bathroom and a terrace looking aft on the upper deck. It’s located just behind Gipsy’s wheelhouse, which overlooks a lounge area forward. A banquette in the bridge welcomes the owner, who loves to observe nighttime navigation. Among other accessories to navigation is a FLIR night-vision camera.

Two decks below are four comfortable guest suites, arranged fore and aft of an attractive foyer. The main deck on Gipsy is about entertaining, with a dining space aft and an inviting main salon. A huge and elegant galley with Miele appliances, treated with saltwater-resistant coating, has several large freezers/refrigerators along a pantry space that buffers the galley from the salon. Farther forward is a full-beam dining area that seats 12 comfortably. Six big portholes open for fresh air.

The crew, accommodated forward on the lower deck in beautifully finished cabins, has easy access to all decks via a second set of pathways. Somewhat disorienting at first, Gipsy ’s layout follows impeccable logic.

The exterior styling is a compromise, between the client’s desire and the yard’s mandate to keep a certain air de famille , but it’s a successful one. Gipsy , painted in her two-tone livery of white and grey Awlgrip, is appealing. “The exterior reflects the concept of simple lines. By raising the gunwales just a little bit, the use of handrails is limited only to the aft main-deck cockpit. This adds to the rigorous design that makes this yacht look much bigger and timeless,” the designer says.

The hull design by naval architect Umberto Tagliavini included tunnels aft to reduce the draft. Powered with two Caterpillar engines, Gipsy has a range of around 2,000 nautical miles at 12 to 13 knots. She can reach 20 knots and do so silently.

Accustomed as it is to dampen noise and vibrations on fast boats, the yard has applied the same rigorous techniques to keep the ride comfortable and quiet — roughly 7.6 tons of sound-absorbing materials went into Gipsy . As the stateroom on the upper deck is prone to more movement, the yard opted for ABT-Trac’s electric fin stabilisers.

With this convincing new addition, Otam becomes an option among a small group of yards willing and able to build mid-size custom yachts in aluminium. And what Gipsy says about them is, yes, they can!

The new OTAM SD35 offers a unique amount of living space onboard. Her aluminum construction allows the yard, in close collaboration with the client, to create a unique version that reflects personal taste both in interior layouts and exterior lines, both of which have been assigned to Tommaso Spadolini, the famous international yacht design office.

In addition the SD35 has a displacement of 295 GT, at the maximum limit of the category, offering superior volumes for the 300 GT category.

The interiors, again unique and full-custom built like a bespoke suit, are another OTAM strength since ever. And with her 295 GRT displacement, therefore under 300 GRT “limit”, the yacht offers remarkable larger volumes than any other competitor in her category. With OTAM’s hull number one in the Custom Range – m/y “GIPSY” – the client was very adamant that the layout would totally reflect his personal approach to life at sea.

The main deck is completely dedicated to her guest’s daily activities, and their leisure or business/corporate entertainment. The large spaces available include a nearly 40 square meter main salon with movie theater and a full beam dining area forward. The main deck also hosts the service areas, with a fully furnished galley and a 25 square meter pantry with separate access for the crew guaranteeing the best quality of life for the owner and his guests. The four VIP cabins with twin and double beds and relative en-suites baths are on the lower deck, in an area connected by a hallway to the crew’s quarters. Here too crew access is carefully located without infringing on guest privacy in order to guarantee highest standard of service on board and the slightest interaction with members of crew. Crew quarter is equipped with 4 cabins and washrooms, the laundry and storerooms. The full owner’s upper deck, offering exclusive views and complete privacy, was expressly requested by the client, re-launching a popular concept among experienced owners who desire exclusivity and a more intimate relation with the sea.The layout also includes day-heads on each deck. Guests therefore don’t have to return to their cabins, and the owner can host a considerable number of guests respecting complete privacy for both him and his family’s cabins and living areas.

In regards to performance, the new OTAM SD35, exploiting the yard’s engineering capabilities enhanced by the successful experience designing and building the Millennium Line, together with their long standing partner Naval Architect Umberto Tagliavini, has designed a very efficient semi-displacement hull that will give the OTAM SD35 a top speed of 20 knots and a considerable range of over 2,000 nautical miles at 11 knots.

In designing the OTAM Custom Range special attention was paid to limiting her draft. The hull below the waterline features semi-tunnels that make the SD35 a very versatile yacht, perfect for a comfortable cruise in international waters like U.S. and the Caribbean, where a limited draft becomes a key factor to consider.

The new Otam Custom Range SD35 superyacht GIPSY , measuring 35 metres is nearing completion. GIPSY is a semi-displacement aluminium motor yacht and is scheduled for a world debut at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show in September.

GIPSY spreads over three decks with a 7,8-metre beam and is being built for an experienced Italian owner who was looking for a fully custom aluminium yacht, made-to-measure according to his wishes and respecting his lifestyle.

The hull and superstructure have been finished, together with all paint jobs. The propulsion and generators have also been installed while the interior is also nearing completion.

GIPSY is scheduled to be launched in early June after which she will get ready for her world-premiere at the 2016 MYS.

The new OTAM SD35 provides the customer with a one-of-a-kind amount of living space. The aluminium construction provides flexibility when it comes to personalising the interior layouts and exterior lines, both of which, have been assigned to the renowned international design office, Spadolini .

The interiors are fully customised with the yacht offering remarkable larger volumes than any other competitor in her category.

The Owner of GIPSY was adamant that the layout would completely reflect his personal approach to the life at sea. The main deck is entirely dedicated to guests’ activities, leisure or business/corporate entertainment. The vast spaces aboard include an almost 40 square metre main saloon with a movie theatre and a full beam dining area forward. The main deck also boasts service areas with a fully-equipped galley and a 25-square metre pantry with separate access fro the crew.

Otam Gispy awarded in Austria

Gipsy – first unit of the semi-displacement aluminum Otam Custom Range – has been named as “best naval architecture for semi-displacement yachts” at the ShowBoats Design Awards 2017 on Sunday the 6 th of February at the award ceremony held in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Gianfranco Zanoni – Otam Yachts CEO refers: “We really wish to thank and dedicate this important achievement to the Owner of M/Y Gipsy and his family. It has been an amazing experience for Otam shipyard to build such a different product translating the full owner detailed vision and way of living the sea into a real product.We wish to share this satisfaction together with our internal Team of direct Workers and last but not least with Mr Umberto Tagliavini from Marine Design Studio, with Mr Tommaso Spadolini for the important cooperation. Otam Custom Range is currently working on different new opportunities exploring different Products developed together with high customization oriented buyers. A warm and special thank goes to the ShowBoat Design Award Team for the time and passion dedicated to Otam and the new Otam Custom Range.”

This 2017 SBD Awards celebrates the creative talents behind the most innovative, elegant and inspiring new yacht designs from the boards of the world’s leading yacht design studios.

The 2017 edition rewarded SD 35m M/Y Gipsy with the prize for the Best Naval Architecture (semi-displacement Motor Yachts category) which is intended to recognize naval architects whose design for a qualifying motor yacht combines efficient hydrodynamics with elegance in a hull that properly meets its intended purpose, particularly in respect of performance, seaworthiness, range and economy.

The real “mantra” for Otam Yachts that built his production and reputation – of over 63 years of history – on yachts with exceptional seaworthiness, efficiency and powerboating based performances.

The yard receives this award with immense pride as a recognition not just for the yacht itself, but for the great passion and efforts made since the beginning of 1954.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
