Neo 570c: the super test of Neo Yachts’ flagship

Minimal Logo

A very special sea trial for the Neo 570c, the latest addition from NeoYachts.

Neo-570c-upwind

Paolo Semeraro was certainly thinking of this when he designed the new Neo 570c which, as you will understand from reading this article, is a boat that can easily switch between being built as a pure racer or as a comfortable cruiser-racer.

A very special boat then, which we could not resist testing at sea.

Neo 570c Sea Trial

I had the chance to test this wonderful boat on two occasions: the first in a club regatta with very little wind, and the second on a very windy test day. A truly unrepeatable opportunity, which allows us to describe her in both situations.

In very light wind

Neo-570c-light-wind

On board are just four sailors and a crew of skiers and golfers (this is the formula for the VGS Cup) who have no sailing experience whatsoever. Carbonita, this is the name of the Neo 570c on which we are sailing, is now in racing version (square-top mainsail, running backstay and without a jib furler), so we will have to decide how best to be organised for manoeuvring. A quick glance at Antonio Latini, the skipper, and we opt for a white-sail regatta (so to speak of course), the best solution to avoid getting into trouble.

The wind increases a little and is around 4 knots of true, just enough to give the start, we hoist the genoa and begin to familiarize ourselves with the Neo 570c. We bear away, we trim for speeds and Carbonita sets off immediately, accelerating and creating her apparent. We are already sailing at over 5.5 knots, much faster than the true wind, despite the fact that the 105% jib at the bow isn’t exactly the best in these breezes.

At five minutes we approach the starting line and begin to figure out where to start, a luxury few of us can afford because while we are sailing fast, the other boats are struggling to move. It’s a bit surreal, as if the wind was only there for us.

Neo-570c-sailing-upwind

But there is none for anyone, not only are we faster, but we also make a hell of an angle and so, as the windex at the masthead points in an almost unnatural direction, we pull away little by little from the rest of the fleet.

The wind picks up a bit, it gusts up to 7/8 knots and we sail over 9 while I explain to the crew how to set up in the toe-rail. The Neo 570c, even under gusts, always has controlled reactions, never nervous, with a really excellent overall balance.

Our direct competitor, on the other hand, hoists a black gennaker as big as a football field and goes down great, it will be hard to resist in the two sides of reach that today’s course provides, it’s a long way to go, and in the worst conditions for us. But evidently this is not enough because the Neo 570c manages to conquer the line of honour with a lead of over 4 minutes!

In short with little wind we sail really fast aboard the Neo 570c, I can only imagine what it would be like if we had a light genoa and gennaker …

In strong (and gusty) wind

Luca-DAmbrosio-The-International-Yachting-Media

There were plenty of people on board, flocking from all over Italy (and beyond) to test the Neo 570c . As many as 18 people on board (yes, you read that right) who, quite simply, once on board almost disappear. Carbonita has room for everyone, which is an important pro, both in racing and cruising.

We hoist the mainsail directly by reefing and, thanks to today’s quieter furling configuration, we unfurl the jib, bear away and set off like a rocket in that miracle of strong wind and flat water that only the north wind in Liguria can provide.

I expected Carbonita to be fast, but I didn’t expect her to be balanced and easy to handle, even in these conditions. And yet, at practically all speeds and even upwind, all it takes is a touch of the wheel to get a corresponding course change, as if there were only 10 knots of wind.

Neo-Yachts

Pushing out to sea the wind increases and settles between 22 and 25 knots. The waves are clearly perceivable, they are dry, steep and try to make things difficult for Carbonita , which, however, does not give a damn and continues on her way. The boat remains resoundingly dry as the splashes are pushed back out.

In these somewhat ‘bad’ conditions, it becomes evident and visible, especially when the boat is heeling, how the bow flare makes the air converge on the base of the jib which, with this expedient, receives clean air and yields decidedly more than usual.

Another effect, resulting from the adoption of this design, is that going to the bow to adjust the base of the jib becomes much safer than usual.

We all take turns at the helm, competing to see who can pass 13 knots. The atmosphere on board is, despite the conditions, relaxed and serene. A miracle only made possible by this amazing Neo 570c.

But is this boat for racing or cruising? The answer is clearly painted on the faces of all those who are enjoying this fantastic day, competitive owners or Sunday boaters, all united by a single emotion, the pure enjoyment of (very) fast and safe sailing, within everyone’s reach. A balance that is truly difficult to achieve but which, with the Neo 570c, Paolo Semeraro has succeeded in achieving.

What if Neo 570 was mine? How would I configure her?

sailboat

If this boat were mine it would certainly be dedicated to long navigation, and therefore to cruising. I’d want it to be fast but easy to handle with a super small crew, i.e. alone, which is how I usually sail.

I would certainly renounce the square-top mainsail in favour of a furling in the boom and opt for a split backstay (instead of the running), hydraulically adjustable.

I would also give up the 2.55-metre bowsprit in favour of a more manageable one, comfortably reachable from the bow, where I would set up the attachment to rig a rollable Code 0.

Lastly, I would use a fixed jib furler (which I would like to be identical to the one I tested) and a flying forestay to be fitted only when needed, for the foresail, when the wind is really strong.

This way I would have a boat that, while still being a missile, would give great excitement in pure cruising, thus allowing me to go sailing all the time, relegating the use of the engine to just manoeuvring in and out of ports.

Then, with a boat like that and maybe adding a gennaker, I’d immediately run to sign up for the Roma x 2 !!!

First look: NEO 570c

Carkeek and Neo Yachts have joined forces to produce a new cruiser / racer, the NEO 570c, with similar performance characteristics as a TP52

neo yachts

Product Overview

If you design and build a boat to look this wickedly fast, you better hope it performs. And it seems Shaun Carkeek and Neo Yachts have done everything they can to try to achieve just that by producing an 11.5 tonne 57-footer which has half that weight hanging in the bulb 4m below the surface! Their brief to produce a repeatable cruiser racer with the same speed, power and performance as a TP52, yet with a habitable cruising interior, always ensured this would be a fascinating project.

Paolo Semeraro, the head of Neo Yachts and Banks Sails, reports that the 570c has already performed very well in the light airs first trials. “Making 10.2 knots upwind is quite easy as well as reading 12.5 knots under code zero in less than 10 knots true wind speed.” He also says that the inclusion of water ballast on this first model really helps when sailing short-handed.

Semeraro stresses that, despite the fanatical attention to weight during construction, this boat is equipped for cruising, including comforts such as aircon, watermaker, bow thruster, induction cooking and a garage for a 3.3m tender. Yet it offers “performances in some cases higher than a TP52 for a very similar handicap.”

neo yachts

saloon with table forward shows plenty of room in this stripped out two-cabin version.

Some (not I), may find Carkeek’s distinctive and heavily chamfered forward sections too aggressive. The camber shape takes a chine from the lower stem all the way aft to form a chisel shape, which looks menacing when seen from bow on. But the success the South African designer found with the virtually untouchable stealth bomber-style Fast 40 Rán VII has ensured this has become a signature trend. We’ve seen the iconic shape now spin off onto projects such as the CF-520 (Oystercatcher XXXV being the first example) and the M72 in build at Mylius.

Nevertheless, this Neo 570c is the first production-style yacht to back up these looks with a seriously lightweight performance build. The full Gurit prepreg carbon hull is cured at 70ºC. The keel lifts to 2.8m, but also ensures low slung ballast when lowered to 4.2m, so it can offset 184m2 of upwind sail area – or over 400m2 with the A-sail set. The rig is made from hi modulus carbon, the hydraulics are by Cariboni.

The sailing photos and 3D imagery show a fastidiously flush deck, which includes mere bumps for coamings so it’s hard to envisage much cruising comfort. But the deck plan makes it easy to transform between racing and cruising modes, thanks to high speed electric winches and traveller and removable tables.

The flare to the aft quarters suits such a cool, angular design, while plinths for the runner and mainsheet rise vertically from the 45º angled deck. Transverse jib tracks leading right inboard allow for scything upwind sheeting angles.

Owners can choose varying degrees of interior fit out and comfort, including a stripped-out two cabin layout with open forepeak or a three cabin version with full owner’s suite forward.

“Although the 57ft size is calculated to be a corrected time winner in Mediterranean offshore races… from the same mould we can build a 60-footer (with different deck) to allow a third bathroom and racing in the minimaxi class,” Semeraro explains.

Neo 430 ROMA is a cruiser/racer oriented for IRC rule both to osshore and inshore races , but can peform well also in ORCi  and PHRF.

The dimension overall of 43 feet can be utilized  also in the new  Super 12 Class in Australia.

This is an all round design both in light and and stronger winds.

The hull shape came from the experience of the Neo 400+ and 350 past designs  refined with CFD analysis  design and enginnering, great attention to the distribution of the volumes  of the canoe body to have a boat always balanced and easy to sail.

The hull is wide with the maximum beam that arrives up to the trasoom to maximize the righting moment from the crew  weight

CYD compared the previous yachts and their design benefits to discover the latest hull and exterior. This yacht will be an all-rounder sailing well up wind and down wind in any wind conditions.

Below the water line the hull is characterised with narrow low wetted surface  hull shape  and a round section shape with the intention to achive low drag , expecially at low speed.

Outside the water in her bow, there is plenty of volume to create positive lift for increased performance in downwind and beam reach sailing.

The side of the design has a chine, used previously in other Neo designs by CYD.

This has a structural function and reduces windage.

From the maximum beam to the transom the yacht does not become narrower.

his is adventageous for upwind sailing as the crew can create a higher righting moment with their weight on the rail.

The deck house has a typical Ceccarelli design, as the 350 and 400+, with sleek lines and a full integration of deck to superstructure.

Internally the Neo 430 ROMA has two options.

One more orientated to racing and will be for the hull 02 actaully in construction for an Australian owner ,  and the other for cruising lifestyle more mediterranean style that will be for the hull 01  for an owner of north Adriatic .

The yacht is constructed solely from female mould for the hull and deck, laminated and infused with epoxy to maintain strength and stiffness. The construction also conforms to all ISO category A and OSR special regulations.

ROMA has 3 possible configurations for her appendages.

A twin rudder system and lifting keel  that can reduce the draft  to only 1.60 mt.  with the keel up.

The lifting  keel  and the hydraulic  system has been enginnered  and build by Cariboni

This configuration allows the depth to be reduced from -3.00 M to -1.60M which is highly advantegous when mooring in shallower bays around the Adriatic for example.

The  draft of 3.00 Mt. gave an high righting moment that associated to the light dspl and high sail area  will  be a pure  very  fast cruisr that can reach up to 20 knots .

She can also have another version  with  single spade rudder of high aspect ratio with a fixed keel with a torpedo bulb, built in high strength steel. This option has a draft of -2.85M. The final appendage option is orientated to offshore racing as it is built with twin rudders and the fixed keel and torpedo bulb.

Three Neo 430 ROMA's are now in construction with twi order in place .

One for the European market and two to be exported globally.

Once again this CYD have completed all naval architecture, engineering, interior and exterior design for this model the concept has been done together with Paolo Semeraro  the boss of  Neo Yachts

The name  ROME  was chosen by Semeraro  as a tribute to Italy and their legacy in quality design.

Neo 570: As fast as it is stylish…

  • Advertorial

neo yachts

The design studio behind the unbearably foxy Fast40 Rán 7 has teamed up with an Italian shipyard which is already legendary when it comes to good looks.

Is there a production monohull under 60ft LOA with a full cruising interior and all mod-cons that can match the pace and performance of a TP52? Not yet, but there probably will be. Paolo Semeraro, the former Olympian, America’s Cup sailor, master sailmaker and now owner-director of the Neo Yachts shipyard in Bari, Italy, is on a mission to make it happen.

The design brief for the Neo 570, already in build and due to launch next year, reads like a yachtsman’s quest for the Holy Grail. It calls for a boat that can keep up with Quantum and Azzura on most points of sail and in any wind conditions but has shallow enough draught to get in and out of normal yacht harbours.

Not only that, it must be competitive in both short-handed and fully crewed racing, yet easy enough to handle that an experienced amateur sailor can use it for family cruising. It must have a fully fitted interior, air conditioning, a big fridge-freezer, water maker, anchor-handling system and tender garage.

Musto

Other requirements include RCD Category A (Ocean) certification and the ability to convert from cruising mode to stripped-out racer in few hours, removing some of the furniture, swapping a pinhead mainsail for a fathead one and a fixed backstay for a pair of runners, without a dedicated shore crew or special tools.

It sounds like a flight of fancy but Semeraro has a track record of achieving the almost impossible. ‘The story starts back in 2014 when I built a full carbon cruiser-racer 40-footer that could make high speeds (26kts recorded) and used it to win the Middle Sea Race,’ he says. ‘We elongated the prototype to make the Neo 400+, which is actually 42ft long and sold three of them.

‘Last year we launched the Neo 350 and sold two of those, one of which was 5th overall in the 2019 ORCì World Championships just a week after her launch. On the delivery trip the same 350, with a full cruising interior, was already achieving 18kts of boatspeed in 18 kts of true wind. And now we have started the big-boat project, the Neo 570. The first boat has been sold already.’

When Semeraro approached Shaun Carkeek, head of Carkeek Design Partners, to design a 52ft racer-cruiser with similar performance and handicap to the latest TP52s, Carkeek said it was impossible. ‘So it became a 55-footer and then a 57, which is the minimum size if you want all the relevant systems onboard – and the maximum size for the handicap,’ Semeraro says.

His idea was to push the concept of a racer-cruiser to the absolute limit, building it entirely out of prepreg carbon, including all interior doors and furniture. ‘We added a few things to enhance comfort onboard but the displacement and weight distribution remain comparable to a pure race boat,’ he says. ‘That was not easy; we had to consider every single component.’

Why did he choose the Carkeek design office? ‘We wanted fresh ideas from a relatively new name. Shaun Carkeek is a young guy… but already with a proven track record and relevant experience,’ Semeraro says. ‘For example, I was impressed with the performance of his Fast 40 design, RAN and his track record in the Fast 40 class is excellent: every new boat has been significantly faster than the last one.’

Semeraro admits that it has been a demanding project. ‘It took a whole year just to define,’ he says. ‘We faced some significant “constructive discussions” with Carkeek, but the great thing about him is that he is unafraid to innovate. He is a man who fights for his ideas, for what he believes in – and that’s what we like. I am accustomed to being the one who wants to push the design to its limits, with others pulling me back. But in this project the designer and the owner of hull number one have been pushing even more. It’s been me who is applying the brakes. The owner is 35 years old, the designer is 45; at 57 I am the old guy.’

Why not build a 60-footer?

‘We didn’t because it would weigh three or four tons more and would not have the same weight/performance characteristics,’ Semeraro explains. ‘And with modern hull shapes, you really don’t need the extra space. They are so wide that it’s easy to fit two very big aft cabins into the hull, with plenty of space for a technical area and tanks between them.’

He says many shipyards tend to build yachts bigger than they need to be ‘because they get more money for doing essentially the same job. But why is it that large racing yachts so rarely win a race on corrected time? We researched the outcomes of major IRC/ORC events. In more than 80 per cent of those regattas, the winning boat was a TP52. For those who want to enter the mini-maxi class, we have the solution’, he says.

A typical custom build project of this type has a budget of around €3m and only half of that goes into the hull.

‘My philosophy is different,’ Semeraro says. ‘I think it’s important to put most of the money into the boat’s hull and structures because that’s the permanent part, the base construction. For the Neo 570, 70 per cent of the budget goes into the hull.’ It makes sense to use a full carbon mould even though it costs twice as much, he explains.

‘It allows us to use the absolute minimum amount of fairing compound. It’s very important to eliminate as much passive weight as possible. You only have to remove 40kg of filler, and you have saved enough weight to fit a watermaker. Using pre-preg makes the boat’s weight more predictable as well as lighter and ensures that there is no elongation whatsoever between the boat and the mould.’

Weight distribution is also crucial. All of the systems will be in the lower part of the boat; the rudder is three metres forward from the transom and there is nothing behind it apart from the tender garage, which will be empty while racing. All previous Neo Yachts have precisely hit their design weight, which is extremely rare in boatbuilding.

‘It’s usually a problem with the mentality of the boatyard and the designer,’ Semeraro says. ‘We include all of the options before calculating the boat’s design weight – the tender garage, the fridge freezer, the anchor, the air conditioning and so on.’

It’s important to remember that this design isn’t just a radical oneoff. It’s intended for series production with semi-custom layout, rig, keel and equipment options. ‘We’re planning to build just a few of these boats per year,’ Semeraro says. ‘It’s impossible to produce good boats if you build too many.’

neo yachts

The first Neo 570 will have 450 litres of water ballast, to be used only for short-handed ocean racing. There are three different interior layout options (cruiser, cruiser-racer and racer) and two keels, lifting or canting. ‘Hull number one will be the cruiser-racer version with two master cabins, two bathrooms with separate shower and front open space,’ Semeraro says. ‘And a 4.2m deep lifting keel. TP52s have a draught of 3.8m; this bigger boat needs the extra righting moment.’

Despite offering a canting keel option, Semeraro isn’t convinced that it will be much faster unless a specific type of offshore/ocean racing use is the programme. ‘If you analyse racing results you will find that about 85 per cent of the time, a fixed deep keel is actually faster on corrected time,’ he says. ‘Compare the performance of the Cookson 50 – which is a very good boat – against a TP52.’

The lifting keel option is a musthave for cruising, needed to get into most normal yacht harbours and many anchorages.

‘You’d definitely need the lifting keel version if you wanted to cruise the Caribbean,’ Semeraro says. Some keel systems can do both – cant and lift – but he reckons they aren’t suitable for this super-lightweight boat. ‘The weight of the combined system would negate all the benefit of the canting keel,’ he says, at least on this size of yacht.

neo yachts

What sort of owner wants a boat like this? Semeraro says there’s plenty of demand from customers who are tired of sailing long distances in totally stripped-out, uncomfortable boats. ‘We’re going for younger (in mentality) owners aged 40 to 60 who want both adrenaline and pleasure,’ he says. The sort of owners who will go to St Tropez with a professional crew, then spend a week cruising with their family. If they buy a TP52, they’ll need another boat for cruising.’

The design will have to prove itself on the race circuit but one thing’s for sure: with a passage planning speed of 12 knots or more, the Neo 570 will massively extend your cruising range. As Semeraro says, ‘You can sail overnight from Italy to Croatia or Greece and be there early in the morning for the first choice of fresh fish from the fishermen’.

The way we use boats has changed in the past years. Accompanied by advanced technologies and in-depth studies NEO has been designed from the ground up by close cooperation with J&J Design. In order to make it equally attractive for different markets and climates we designed NEO to be available in three basic versions: Coupe, Hard Top and Open. Open and Hard Top share the same deck arrangements with generous social area aft and in the bow whereas Coupe offers remarkable salon area with excellent 360 visibility, fully functional galley equipped with full height fridge/freezer combo and an innovative access to the bow sun-pad. Following the signature features that represent the Greenline Yachts DNA, NEO is all about comfort and convenience onboard, be that only for a few hour joyride with friends, or on a longer cruise with your loved ones.

NEO is defined by it’s unique bathing platform which is the largest platform ever introduced on any outboard engine powered boat. It features a unique hydraulic lifting mechanism for the platform, which is surrounding the engines making it much larger than on any competitor in the outboard class. The adaptable stairs connecting the platform and the cockpit are integrated into the platform itself ensuring a safe and comfortable passage at any height of the platform. The cockpit features a generous U-shaped seating area with a wet bar making it a perfect place to relax or entertain your friends and family. The helmsman’s position features a comfortable bench with room enough for two guests and helmsman to enjoy the ride and appreciate the visibility and ergonomics of the dashboard. In addition to the cockpit entertaining area, there is an intimate U shaped bow lounge area just above the cabin accessible via a unique passage through the windshield to port. Following the Greenline Yachts One Level Living concept there is only one step to overcome from the cockpit to the bow also making it safe and effortless to bring up the mooring line in case of stern-to Mediterranean docking. Greenline NEO can host up to unprecedented 16 guests, 11 of which are able to face forward during navigation which represents a uniquely comfortable and safe feeling while piercing through the waves.

NEO Coupe features a full size cabin down below with an “island” double berth or optional Greenline’s signature “scissor” berths together with surprisingly spacious head compartment and ample wardrobe and storage space. Open and Hard Top versions also share the cabin layout with the separate toilet compartment and a V-shaped settee with a table that can be transformed into a double berth. Choosing from broad range of interior upholstery fabric options and colors including furniture wood each NEO can be an individual of its own and a pride and joy of it’s owner.

We are Dymph and Wim Bijnen, the proud owners of Greenline 40 named Dymple. We made some changes to the boat – the blue hull, extra teak on the sun deck and on the benches in the cockpit gives this boat more cachet. For this summer a trip is planned to the Olympics in London where there is a big Sail Parade on the Thames to London.

As we owned lots of boats before we know it’s impossible to design and built a new boat without any problems, however Greenline/Seaway pursued in getting the boat right! We have never seen service like this before, big compliments to Seaway and Nova yachting. We are now the proud owners of this wonderful hybrid. As we use the boat in the northern part of the Netherlands it’s awesome to sail electric through parts were there are only lots of birds, the silence is amazing. What we also love is just anchor somewhere in the middle of nature without worrying about shore-power and still have all the luxury like we were at home. In short; we love the setup of this hybrid! It’s quiet, full of luxury and very versatile. Love it! Greenline 33, too awesome.

We are very happy with our Greenline 40. It gives a new dimension for family navigation. The boat is comfortable and really easy to handle.

Jon and Anne Fleming live on the Gold Coast. They have owned a Greenline Hybrid 40 since 2013 and clocked up over 1000NM in the first year. The couple have owned a lot of boats over the years – we asked them why they chose the Greenline this time.

“We wanted to sometimes travel without noise. We chose the hybrid version of the Greenline for that reason and often use it when the tide is in our favour – and it’s terrific – both effective and efficient. We live on the Gold Coast and go away for a day or 2 at a time heading to South Stradbroke Island and Jumpinpin. The Greenline is very comfortable for overnight trips away with everything we want – we often say it’s just like an apartment. We love the large galley and great fridge. We also love the full size beds in the main cabin – it’s easy to divide them in the in day time and push them together in seconds at night.

Easter in Mooloolaba

For Easter we went to Mooloolaba which is around 80 miles from us. It was quite rough off the northern top of Moreton Island but we were reasonably comfortable on board and the boat handled the conditions beautifully. We had 4 adults and 2 children on board for the long weekend. We had a fantastic time – dropping the stern down to enjoy the water and indoor-outdoor living. I guess for us the Greenline stood out from the crowd. We wanted plenty of shade, walk around decks, single level living and a swim platform. We also love the overall visibility and the fact that we can sit in the cabin and watch TV. The living space is really well thought out. We are absolutely thrilled with boat and our experience with eyachts has been very good. They attend to everything straightaway and are a pleasure to deal with.”

John Bossi had his eye on the Greenline for months. After several boat shows, lots of reading and research, he made a shared decision with his wife, Jo. The couple finally settled on the Greenline 33 Hybrid over their second choice, a catamaran. In his own words, John shares with us what his family loves about the Greenline 33…

Why the Greenline 33? “At first the attraction was the styling. The Greenline has a unique look for the market…it’s retro but modern. The combination of design and material like the beautiful woods give it a great look. I’m also impressed with its phenomenal value for money just in the purchase price. That’s on top of the savings you gain from its hybrid engine and solar power features.”

Where has the Greenline taken you? “Mainly day trips on Sydney Harbour and an overnight at Cockle Bay. We had it offshore in a 2 to 3 meter swell and it exceeded my expectations. The Greenline is gentle and plows through waves easily. It’s a supremely seaworthy yacht. The steering is relaxed and doesn’t roll as much as some of our past boats. There is none of the slamming you get on a planning hull. We look forward to doing some coastal cruising and more overnights in the future.”

How’s life aboard? “We love it! We have 3 children and lots of friends and family we like to entertain. I’m Italian and my wife loves to cook big meals – its our way of relaxing, creating memories with our favourite people. The Greenline is a perfect fit for our lifestyle – it’s truly an entertainers’ boat.” The Greenline has a great layout with a seamless flow from inside to out. I’m always involved in what’s happening when I’m driving. Again, in my other boats, I was on the flybridge talking down to everyone below. We also had our Christmas party on board. I invited the staff from my dental practice to a restaurant for what they thought was lunch and showed up in the Greenline. They were ecstatic! With 10 guests on board we had a blast cruising Sydney Harbour on a beautiful summer day.”

Any surprises on the Greenline? “One night we docked off Cockle Bay for dinner thinking it would be a great way to avoid driving late at night. We went back to the boat around midnight when we realized the party on Cockle Bay was just getting started! Surprisingly, as soon as we shut the door our world went silent for a great night of sleep! I had no idea the sound insulation was that good.”

What would you like potential Greenline owners to know? “It’s an extremely versatile boat. The brochures indicates this, but it wasn’t until going to 3 boat shows and owning one myself that I realised what that meant. There are actually 5 saloon configurations we use when we have guests aboard (see photos below).

1. Dining with L shaped and side seating 2. Coffee Table seating 3. Comfortable helms seat for two 4. Open Saloon using coffee table as a serving table or seat on bathing platform 5. Guest berths with a double and single bed

Each configuration takes seconds to arrange. Also the bed in the owner’s cabin is so easy to convert – again seconds. Having two entrances into the bathroom is a really nice privacy feature. The engines are also easy to access.”

How was eyachts ? “Working with Dan Jones was great… there were never problems, only solutions. I found that across the board with everyone I was in contact with at eyachts. I’ve made a lot of purchases from dental equipment to motorcycles. I have never experienced a standard set so high across an organisation. I love the espresso machine that Dan gave me as a purchase gift – perfect for an Italian. It was very thoughtful and a great ending to a wonderful experience.”

Our names are Ron and Andrena Williams. We purchased our Greenline 33 about 5 months ago through a wonderful agent; Richard Wardenburg and his lovely wife Suzy, from Auckland NZ. We have really enjoyed this boat, it is ideal for our situation in The Marlborough Sounds, S.I. of New-Zealand. The Marlborough Sounds has 1,500 km`s of coastal waterways, with variable winds and seas flat, to quite rough at times. Greenline travels well and, no-one experiences motion sickness on this boat. It is ergonomically excellent, with the extended deck area enabling us to partake in more activities, more easily, such as divine, swimming. The cost per hour to “run” at 5.7litres of diesel, is envied by other boat users. PS: My wife has a fear of water and boats but has gotten quite confident on our Greenline 33.

Despite the acceptance of hybrid technology in cars, similar technology in boats still raises a few eyebrows, but there is no reason why it has any less promise in marine applications. Indeed, it may well be the future of powered boating and Slovenian boat builder Greenline is leading the way.

Hull shape and Hybrid propulsion are reducing the fuel consumption and environmental impact as well as increasing the comfort and quality of life on board.

The Greenline 33 is not only the big surprise of the year but arguably the most significant new boat of the decade.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

neo yachts

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.
