Understand [ edit ]
Founded in 1716 as a fortress on the Imperial Russia's expanding southern frontier, by 1850s Omsk grew to become the capital of Western Siberia and parts of Central Asia . The construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the late 1890s brought a rapid development boom, culminating in an extravagant 1910s World Fair, around the time of which Omsk acquired much of its neoclassical architectural heritage. Largely due to its strategic importance as the gateway to Siberia and the Russian Far East , Admiral Kolchak of the anti-Soviet White Army chose Omsk as his base and "capital of Russia" in 1918–1919.
Today, Omsk is Russia's seventh largest city with a population of over 1.5 million. An Omsk visit is one of the highlights of a trip to Siberia for the city's attractive and bustling 19th century center, and its numerous cultural opportunities. Literature lovers will find a special interest in Omsk, as it was Dostoevsky's home during the majority of his exile from Saint Petersburg .

The city center around Lyubinsky prospekt is easily walkable and is best explored on foot. In autumn 2017 Lenin St south of the River Om is being dug up and is difficult to walk along, but businesses there and the cathedral remain open.
By taxi [ edit ]
Taxis are plentiful and there are several taxi companies operating in Omsk.
See [ edit ]
The historical part of town is centered on Lyubinsky prospekt, near the confluence of the Om and Irtysh rivers. It is lined with century-old buildings of former merchant salons, residences, and larger commercial, government and religious establishments. The area now has some of the poshest shopping and the best nightlife in the city.
Ulica Krasnyh Zor' (aka Nikol'skij prospekt) leads from the Cossacks' cathedral to a few blocks of historical carved-wood houses. This street can give an idea what Omsk and Siberia used to be like for centuries before industrialization. Unfortunately, these houses are not yet protected as cultural heritage landmarks and may eventually be demolished.

Buy [ edit ]
Omsk is rich in shopping. There is a big difference between the rich and the poor in the city, and this is visible in its shopping malls. While there are shops with extremely cheap goods, there are also modern, upscale malls where every shop is very expensive; a simple shirt at one of these stores could be £100, for example, and a handbag £200. Nevertheless, Omsk offers some great shops with lots of goods.

Omsk is a convenient hub for several regional attractions. Distances are large and locals will consider a city 700km away to be 'nearby'. However, trains are reliable.
- Tobolsk and Tomsk are the oldest cities of Siberia. Because the main transportation arteries originally bypassed them, the towns stayed small, avoiding the typical Soviet development, and retaining their unique picturesque characters. They are reachable by overnight train, or, in the case of Tobolsk , by speed jet boat along the Irtysh River (10-12 hours). Irregular boats also operate to Khanty-Mansiysk and Salekhard , within the Arctic Circle , a 2783 km journey taking six days (see timetable ). This is the best way to see the West Siberian terrain, grand rivers, and rural lifestyle. For some towns, this boat is the only access to the outside world.
- Barnaul (16 hours by train or a 1½ hour flight) is the gateway to the Altai mountains and national parks.
- Kazakhstan is accessible by train - Petropavlovsk (4 hours), Astana (12 hours), or bus - Pavlodar (8 hours).

Omsk Engine Design Bureau (OMKB / OEDB)
The OJSC Omsk Aircraft Engine Design Bureau was founded in 1957 upon partnership with the Central Institute for Aviation Motors (CIAM). It was unknown in the West until 1988, when it was given responsibility for the design of the TV-O-100 turboshaft engine. This design bureau is also commonly referred to as Mars or Omsk MKB Mars.
On the basis of Experimental-Design Bureau-19 by the Order of the Ministry of Aircraft Industry No. 544 dd. 15.10.56 the State Union Experimental-Design Bureau-29 (EDB-29) was established. It continued the development of ASh-82T and Sh-82V piston engines and the development of small-size gas turbine engines. Two ASh-82T engines were installed on the IL-14 airplane, and the ASh-82V engine was installed on the Mi-4 helicopter. Both aircrafts were one of the best in their class. During a serial production of the engines their warranty service life was increased up to 1500 hours for Ash-82T and 1200 hours for Ash-82V by the efforts of the EDB personnel.
The Omsk Engine Design Bureau (Omskoe mashinostroitel'noe KB OMKB / OEDB) started work on development of small-size turbine engines as early as 1957. At present the OEDB is a leading authority on small-size turbine engines. The first development (1957-1958) accomplished in cooperation with the Central Institute of Aircraft Engine Production (TsIAM) was the 300-hp GTD-1 turbine engine intended to be used as a power unit. This work has allowed to the Omsk Engine Design Bureau (OEDB) specialists to receive necessary experience in gas turbine engine production. The first 100-hour lengthy tests of the GTD-1 engine are successfully conducted. The GTD-1 was supposed to be used as power unit.
The year 1960 saw the first test of the GTD-3 and the first flight of the KA-25 helicopter of marine basing with the GTD-3. Development of engine and reduction gearbox began in the OEDB in November 1957. Original developments, unknown in a domestic air engine building, such as axial-centrifugal compressor, are introduced into an engine design. After realization of the first flight tests there was found out necessity of engine boosting up to power of 900 hp.
The serial production of helicopter engines has been going on for more than 20 years, while their operation is continuing for more than 25 years.
The work on that engine gave the Bureau specialists the opportunity to gain the experience required for creation of turbine engines and in 1965 the GTD-5 engine was developed. This engine and its modification, the GTD-5M, are continued to be manufactured at the present time and are used as ground power sources.
Operations of helicopters in marine conditions indicated the increased corrosion of compressor blades. By efforts of the EDB specialists the given problem has been decided by introduction of blades manufactured of titanium alloy. In 1973 series production of the 1100-hp GTD-3M engines is started. The warranty service life of engines is developed up to 500 h. Serially the engine was manufactured till 1985. The Ka-25 antisubmarine helicopters had been equipped the «Moscow» antisubmarine cruiser.
Tests of the «Object 167» tank with the GTD-3TU engine were conducted in 1963.
In 1967 Production Association named after P.I. Baranov has started series production of the GTD-5M engine. On the basis of experience received by the GTD-1 development, the OEDB specialists have started development of the GTD-5 (GTD-40) new gas turbine engine of the small power made under the single-shaft scheme and intended for the drive of the 20-kW S-20 radio-frequency generator on a 2P24 product. In the following for the 40-kW S-40 generator drive on the «Cube» 2P25 product the development of the GTD-5M engine realized. Activities on operational development of the engine proceeded till 80th years. In 1980 to the engine the warranty service life of 2250 h has been established and the specified life - 3250 h. Series production of engines proceeded till 1991.
In 1968, under the Ministry offer, the OEDB design department started development of the TVD-10M engine for «SKAT» marine motorboats. In the beginning of 1970 the preliminary design of the TVD-10M engine has been developed. The engine of next generation in the same power category became the 940-hp TVD-10 turboprop engine developed in 1970 for the Be-30 airplane for local airlines.
Laid at development of the TVD-10 engine the high technological level of design solutions made it possible to produce a number of its modifications: VD-10 - for air cushion vehicles; TVD-10B - for the An-28 airplane operated on local airlines; TVD-20 - for the An-3 single-engined agricultural aircraft, and also modification of this engine for the An-38 airplane. The VSU-10 auxiliary power plant - for IL-86 and IL-96-300 airbuses.
In 1971 the State Commission signed «Act about successful realization of lengthy tests of the TVD-10M engine». The series manufacturing and overhaul of the TVD-10M engines was made by the OEDB. Engines of our manufacture were successfully maintained a long time on cross-country boats of the Navy.
In 1974, under joint Decision of Ministry of Aviation Industry (MAI) - Ministry of Civil Aviation (MCA) modernization of the An-2 series airplane in the An-3 has been made by replacement of the ASh-62IR reciprocating engine on the TVD-20 turboprop engine. In 1975 under the Contract with Aeronautical Scientific and Technical Complex named after O.K. Antonov, activities on development of the TVD-10B engine for the An-28 airplane for local airlines started.
In 1976 the OEDB was entrusted with the development of an auxiliary power plant for the IL-86 airbus. Design departments per 1977-1978 release design documentation on the VSU-10 engine. The auxiliary power plant is a derivative of the TVD-20 engine. There are manufactured units and mounted test rigs for tests of air by-pass mechanism and end seals. Manufacturing of prime equipment and experimental units of the engine is started. In December, 1980 the VSU-10 engine underwent state official tests, but in 1981 there were still conducted capacious verifying and lengthy tests on four rigs in the OEDB and OEPA named after P.I. Baranov in maintenance of State official tests of the engine. By results of the large done work in January, 1982 the «Act by results of the State 300-hour rig tests of the VSU-10 auxiliary gas-turbine engine intended for an engine start-up and a supply of airborne systems by the electric power and compressed air on the IL-86 airplane» was authorized.
In 1973 , OKB-29 was on the verge of disbanding. Management of the plant imeni P.I.Baranova complained to MAP about the lack of production space and skilled workers. Since the plant P.I. Baranova and the OKB-29 were located on the same territory, it was supposed to pick up the production area and the personnel of the OKB-29. As a result, MAP decided to transfer production space, thousands of specialists (workers, designers, technologists) and a number of machine tools and equipment to the Omsk Motor-Building Plant named after P.I. Baranova.
From the complete elimination of the OKB-29, only the fact that the Navy needed to supply the TVD-10M engines for the Skat air cushion ships, and the plant P. I. Baranova refused the proposal of MAP for the development and production of this engine.
In March 1973, Vladimir Glushenkov left Omsk for Kaluga, having worked as the permanent head of the OKB-29 from 1956 to 1973. Since March 1973, the temporary execution of the duties of the head of the company was entrusted to Lev Usherenko, who was at that time the first deputy chief designer. MAP and the Omsk Regional Party Committee began to select candidates for the post of head of the OKB-29. One of the main contenders was Vladimir Sosnin, the former head of production at the time. Still, they all agreed that a person from the same team should be appointed as a leader, as a result of which in November 1973, the aviation industry minister Peter Dementyev signed an order on appointment to the position of chief designer (head of the OKB-29) Victor Stepanovich Pashchenko.
The whole of 1973 and the beginning of 1974 went to the solution of conflict issues regarding the transfer to the plant to them. PI Baranov specialists, equipment and production space. The plant management prepared and approved in the MAP a list of workers, designers and technologists who were supposed to go to the plant. Naturally, these were the best specialists who had worked in the OKB-29 for many years. For many of them, the transfer from the OKB-29 to the plant was very painful, so after a while many of them began to return to the OKB-29 in various ways.
It was more difficult with the issue of production areas - earlier, at the disposal of OKB-29 there was building No. 94, where the mechanical and assembly shops were located. The new assembly shop was identified in case No. 55, which was ill-adapted for this purpose, in which at the time of the transfer the roof was in disrepair. An interesting fact is that building number 94 after the transfer to the plant was empty for over a year. Gradually, a production site was developed on the outskirts of the city. In this difficult period for the OKB-29, PO Polet offered a large production building to replace the OKB-29 recreation center in the village of Black bow However, after a thorough discussion of the proposal, the OKB-29 management decided to refuse, retaining excellent rest conditions for its employees.
In the future, the management of the plant. PI Baranova made every effort to turn the OKB-29 into a simple division of the plant, providing only the maintenance of engines in mass production, preventing all attempts to disassemble new products.
But, despite the difficulties and hardships, the reputation of OKB-29 as an organization capable of creating small-sized gas turbine engines has been preserved. Thus, in the period from 1973 to 1976 , a small-sized turbo starter with a power of 100 hp was developed. - Product 17. At the end of the development, the turbo starter was transferred to the plant. V. Ya. Klimova for mastering production.
The 940-hp TVD-10 turboprop engine developed in 1970 for the Be-30 short-haul airplane became an engine of the next (after the GTD-3) generation in the same power category. In 1979 the An-28 airplane with the TVD-10B engines took part in Paris Air Show. The high technological level of the design solutions laid at the basis of the TVD-10 engine made it possible to produce a number of its modifications: TVD-10M - a turboprop engine for air cushion vehicles (its versions are sustainer and lift engines). The engine is adapted for operation in marine climate conditions; TVD-10B - a turboprop engine for the An-28 airplane operalion local airlines. PZL-10W - a turboshaft engi: for the W-3 SOKOL helicopu The engine was developed 1 Polish specialists at the WS1 Zbeshuv plant on the basis the TVD-10B engine licem documentation with the OEDB specialists associated as consultants; TVD-20 - a turboprop engine for the An-3 single-engine a ricultural aircraft; VSU-10 - an auxiliary turbii engine for the IL-86, IL-96-300, AN-218 airbuses.
In 1992 the OEDB the overhaul of the TVD-10B engines was made and proceeded to the present time. In 1994 work on the TVD-10B engine application on the «Gratch» single-engined airplane developed by "MiG" were carried out. For this time the OEDB has produced and put to the Customer six engines. From 1997-1998 the OEDB specialists executed a great volume of work on re-equipment of the An-2 first airplane in An-3. The OEDB has transmitted to the Production association "Polyot" a power plant of the An-3 airplane for use of units of this installation (engine mount, aircraft air intake, oil system, etc.) to the equipment of the first airplane. The action mockup of the TVD-20 engine is put for fulfilment of adjustment and test of systems on operating engine.
Works on development of the TVD-20-01B engine modifications connected to the installation of the BUK-20 electronic unit on the An-3 airplane are carried out. 3 dead as Ohio tornadoes prompt mass casualty response in Logan County
Gov. mike dewine: 'the indian lake community will come back'.
At least three people are dead as a result of a series of severe storms that ravaged Ohio on Thursday night, spawning a series of 20 tornado warnings across the state and knocking out power to thousands. For the second time in as many weeks , storms and likely tornadoes tore through Ohio.
Authorities in Logan County are dealing with a mass casualty incident where at least three people died in tornado that struck a trailer park near Indian Lake , located about 70 miles northwest of Columbus. The National Weather Service confirmed as of 2 p.m. Friday that at least four tornadoes touched down across Ohio.
Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds said the number of deaths could increase as rescue efforts continue.
"It's one hell of a mess up there," Dodds said. "It looks like a war zone."
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine: 'There's an awful lot of damage'
Dodds said there were areas where first responders could not search overnight because of debris and downed power lines that made it unsafe. He said there is anticipation that there may be more people found dead during searches that will continue Friday morning.
Dodds said there are areas where a single home may have remained untouched while everything around it has been leveled.
"The power of this thing is just amazing. It hopped around but when you look at it, it's just amazing."
Officials including Gov. DeWine, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, Senate President Matt Huffman and others held a news conference at around 3:30 Friday to give an update on the recovery.
DeWine drove through the Indian Lake area before the press conference to talk with home owners and those impacted by the storms.
"There's an awful lot of damage," he said.
DeWine said the Indian Lake community will rebound from the tragedy.
"The Indian Lake community will come back. That's the message I got from everybody," DeWine said at Indian Lake High School.
State Rep. Jon Cross, R-Findlay, who represents part of the area, said lawmakers have to work with the governor to get the community back open.
"This is a community that relies on tourism," Cross said. "We have devastated businesses that lost everything. We need to get these businesses back open.
Ohio's emergency operations center activated Thursday night during the severe weather and continues to coordinate damage assessment and clean-up efforts with local, state and federal agencies.
“Fran and I are deeply saddened by those impacted by the tornadoes and severe storms,” DeWine said in a statement issued shortly before noon. “We share the grief of the families who lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. Ohioans will come together as they always do with resilience and compassion as we support and rebuild our communities.”
Indian Lake residents assess Ohio tornado damage
Indian Lake resident Blaine Schmitt was working outside his home last night when his wife called him.
She warned him about the tornado and told him to get into the bathtub. He gathered his dog and friend, Greg McDougle, and hunkered down in the bathroom.
Over the next few minutes, the tornado swept through Schmitt's home, shredding the front wall and scattering debris in his yard.
"It sounded like a freight train literally went through the living room," Schmitt said.
Luckily, Schmitt and McDougle managed to get through the storm unscathed.
"I thank God that I'm alive and that my kids weren't here. It was very emotional when I first got here, and it's been emotional ever since then. But I pray every day and it paid off," Schmitt said.
McDougle used to live next door with his father. He sold the home two years ago, and it was being renovated when the storm hit. Now, all that remains is scattered debris, a single flattened wall, and the foundation.
"This is what's left. No one was living here, and thank God for that," McDougle said.
Logan County resident describes tornadoes: 'It's a noise you'll never forget'
As storms approached Logan County late Thursday, Loretta Kinney told her goddaughter Lucy there was nothing to be afraid of.
Kinney and her brother walked Lucy home and by the time they returned to their own house, Kinney said she realized just how wrong she was. The two headed down to the basement and waited out a storm and likely tornadoes that rolled across the Midwest and the Indian Lake region about 70 miles northwest of Columbus.
By the time they'd emerge, Kinney would come to find out that at least three people had died and homes and businesses around the county had been ripped apart.
"Just the noise. When they say you hear a train, it's a noise you'll never forget," Kinney said. "Then to come up and see it, it is so surreal. Even though I'm standing here and looking at everything it doesn't seem real."
Shelter opens for Indian Lake storm victims
The Logan County Emergency Management Agency said it's opened a shelter for victims of Thursday night's storm at the Church of God located at 1000 E Brown Ave.
The United Way of Logan County also established a relief fund where monetary donations can be made to assist residents who have been impacted by the storms.
Donations can be made online to the Indian Lake Tornado Relief Fund at www.uwlogan.org and 100% of donations will go to help community members recover in both the short and long-term from the storms.
Possible tornado strikes Lakeview, Indian Lake: 'People's homes are destroyed'
Columbus Dispatch Photographer Doral Chenoweth arrived in the area before midnight and reported finding extensive damage, including a destroyed trailer park with tractor trailers and RVs overturned and large trees uprooted. In Lakeview, the library and a government building were damaged.
"Every building in Lakeview and every building here has some form of damage," he said, from a spot near Lakeview. "People's homes are destroyed."
The Logan EMA confirmed for The Dispatch that a trailer park in the Indian Lake area just north of Lakeview was struck by a tornado or at least very high winds that have caused extensive damage. The community also reported having a shortage of ambulances.
An NWS spokesman said he couldn't confirm that a tornado struck the community but said there was "reports of a lot of damage there." The NWS will send investigators out Friday to confirm the tornadoes as it did last month when nine were confirmed across Ohio .
Thursday's Ohio storms were part of a larger system that pushed through the Midwest beginning in the afternoon and into the evening.
The Indiana State Police said there are “many significant injuries” after a tornado tore through the community of Winchester, AP reported.
“There have been many, many significant injuries, but I don’t know the number. I don’t know where they are. I don’t know what those injuries are,” Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter told reporters just before midnight Thursday. “There’s a lot that we don’t know yet.”
The National Weather Service in Wilmington and Cleveland issued 20 tornado warnings based on a review of social media posts. That does not include multiple thunderstorms and other alerts.
Indian Lake volunteers continue search for people impacted by storms
Emergency personnel conducted "grid searches" Friday morning in the impacted areas where the storm struck, the sheriff said.
Grid searches are methodical searches using a grid pattern to ensure that all areas can be checked without duplicating efforts and minimizing the risk of missing an area.
The sheriff said there are areas that first responders are able to access during the daylight that were not accessible Thursday night because of downed power lines and concerns about gas leaks. Those areas are now being searched. Crews are also researching areas that were searched Thursday night to ensure that no one who needed medical assistance was missed.
While there has been a "plethora" of volunteers who have arrived on the scene, Dodds said volunteers are more likely to be necessary as the searches conclude and the clean-up effort begins.
The Central Ohio Strike Team mobilized Friday morning to go to the Indian Lake area to help with the ongoing emergency response. The strike team, one of five regional teams across the state that are specially trained to respond when there are large-scale disasters, includes firefighters from every agency in Franklin County.
The members of the strike team receive special training on how to do search and rescue operations in the event of structure collapses, as well as how to do rescue operations in confined spaces and machinery extractions.
AEP transmission towers toppled in Delaware County
AEP Ohio confirmed that the storms toppled six transmission towers near Olentangy Berlin High School. As of 9:15 a.m. Friday, the number of customers without power had risen to more than 13,000.
Photos posted by the utility company on social media show the tower on its side. The tower fell into other power lines in the area.
AEP issued a statement Friday afternoon saying more than 30 power lines came down in the storm, as well as six transmission towers in Delaware County.
The utility company said the goal is to have power restored to as many customers as possible on Friday, however, some customers who get their power from the high-voltage transmission towers could face a potential multi-day outage. AEP said as more information is gathered throughout Friday afternoon, those affected customers will receive an automated phone call.
Specks and tatters of insulation lined sidewalks and the sides of houses at the Pine of Berlin Station, a subdivision near Berlin Middle School. Debris from inside houses — books, crayons, a broken pair of child’s glasses — were scattered in the grass.
“Someone else’s roof is in my kitchen,” said Katie Sprinkle, who weathered the storm with her husband and two kids, ages 9 and 11. The storm terrified her 9-year-old daughter.
“Pray loud, mom,” she said her daughter told her.
The kids wore bike helmets to protect themselves from falling debris, and her husband placed an overturned canoe over them. The family could hear windows breaking in the wind. It sounded like an explosion, Sprinkle said.
Delaware County road closures due to Thursday's storms
Several major traffic routes in Delaware County remained closed as of 7 a.m. Friday because of debris in the roadway. Ohio 315, closed between Hyatts Road and U.S. 23, is expected to remain closed at least through morning rush hour.
The Delaware County Sheriff's office is asking that people avoid the area where the aftermath of the storms are and avoid sightseeing. There are continued concerns about live wires and large trees in the roads.
In a post on Facebook Friday morning, the Delaware County Sheriff's office said crews have been working throughout the night to try and clear roadways but there are areas where debris continues to block roads.
The sheriff's office asked for additional travel time and patience from drivers, as well as willingness to take alternate routes.
The sheriff's office said that as of 5 a.m. Friday, a number of roads remained impassable. Those roads included:
- Portions of Berlin Station Road near Glenn Parkway, between Kingsbury and Braumiller, between Piatt and Dale Ford
- Portions of Bunty Station east of Liberty Road
- Africa Road north of Cheshire
- Portions of Rome Corners
- Portions of Walnut Road and Piatt Road
- Portions of Ohio 3
Tornado warnings from Thursday night's deadly tornadoes
Storms hit indiana, kentucky and northern, central and southern ohio.
At least three confirmed tornadoes touched down Thursday afternoon in southern Indiana and north-central Kentucky Thursday, leaving dozens of structures damaged or destroyed, The Louisville Courier-Journal reported .
Tornadoes were confirmed near Hanover and Marion in Indiana and near Milton in Kentucky. As for Ohio, officials have said it's too early to say just how widespread the storms were, or whether any confirmed tornadoes touched down.
Meteorologist Steve Harbenach of the National Weather Service in Wilmington said there have been several radar confirmations of possible tornadoes across Ohio, but added "we really have no idea right now how many tornadoes we had."
"There have been numerous areas where we've had reports of damage," he added. "It's going to take a while for us to sort through that. it's going to take multiple days for us to sort through this to see what happened."
An X user who was driving from Lima and passing through Logan took pictures of the extensive damage. In the post on X, he said authorities told him that he had missed a tornado "by about 2 minutes." He could not confirm if there were any casualties but said that a large section of U.S. Route 33 northwest of Marysville would remain closed as authorities assessed the damage.
Tornado watches remained in effect until midnight in dozens of Ohio counties, including Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Hocking, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, Union, Ross, Butler, Clinton, Hamilton, Warren, Champaign, Clark, Drake, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby.
Severe thunderstorm warnings remained in effect for Franklin and Madison counties until 11 p.m. Thursday.
