- Boat Reviews
During initial sail trials in England last winter, the boat proved to be very quick out of the blocks and capable of high sustained speeds on all angles. Since then the new 122 has shone in regattas on both sides of the Atlantic. Since the Paris introduction, more than 45 boats have been ordered.
The boat has many unique und useful features on deck, including the carbon fiber sprit for flying an asymmetrical spinnaker, a carbon fiber Hall Spars mast, a “dock box” seat in the transom that can be removed when lightening ship for race days, and the extra-large destroyer wheel, which makes steering from both sides of the cockpit a breeze.
Down below, owners can have a two-cabin, two head arrangement or a three-cabin, one head plan. With either choice, the saloon remains the same with a large nav station and chart table, a very useful U-shaped galley and bench settees on either side of a large centerline table.
J/Boats has long set a standard for high quality, high performance, dual-purpose boats that really claim a lot of silver at the major racing events and provide warm, comfortable accommodations for the family cruises in between events. And their boats are blue-water capable, a point underscored by the recent victory in the Transpac by a J/125.
Specifications: LOA 40’0”; LWL 34’7”; Beam 11’11”; Draft 7’4”; Displacement 14,800 lbs.; Sail Area 865 sq. ft.

Quick Look: J/122
- By Jeremy McGeary
- Updated: September 12, 2007
J Boats introduced the J/122 at the Paris Boat Show last December, for two very good reasons. Paris delivers a heckuva cool atmosphere in which to make a debut and the boat was built in the J/Europe factory in Les Sables d’Olonne, a popular and prominent sailing venue on France’s west coast.
In the mold of its siblings, the J/122 is a high-performance, sprit boat designed to be easy to sail, competitive on the racecourse, and capable of taking the family for a summer cruise. In appearance and proportions it is all J, moderate in beam by current standards and sporting a low, lean profile.
Accommodations are simple, traditional in layout, and complete in that all components-cabins, saloon, head, galley, and chart table-are of adequate if not generous proportions.
As have all its antecedents, the J/122 reflects J Boats’ current thinking on how to get the most fun sailing.

J/122E is a 39 ′ 11 ″ / 12.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Rod Johnstone and built by J Boats and J Composites starting in 2014.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
J/122E (built in France) has same hull and rig as the J/122, but with updated deck, coach roof, interior and port lights added. 3 different keel options available.

For Sunday, we will be doing some mast wiring work between 09-1100 with Bill. If you can come early to help (two trips up the mast) that would be great. We picked up some J122 Zig Zag Sails to check out between 1100-1500 as well as our recut Code 75. From Zig Zag we will got a Code Zero, A1, A2, a lite Jib and M/H jib. So some batten stuffing prep also required. We also toured Zig Zag and got to see their new bottom paint job. We have beer and Dark & Stormy. Please bring your own lunches. Good discussion with Bruce Berriman today about inspection and did get to fly the Code 55. Kevin Farrar recut the luff and leech so flies much nicer.

The Slow-Motion TikTok Bill
The bill that could ban TikTok is in for a slog.
After sailing through the House of Representatives last week, the bill’s momentum is slowing in the Senate. It’s too soon to tell whether Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer , the Senate majority leader, will bring the bill to the floor for a vote. Even before that, Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell , whose Commerce Committee could next vote on the bill, has also been working on her own TikTok legislation. Any changes to the original bill would require a new House vote to pass.
Gridlock would mark a reprieve for TikTok. It was caught off guard earlier this month by how quickly a bill that would give ByteDance less than six months to divest the app in the U.S., or face a ban, was moving, we reported . More broadly, TikTok’s current position is the result of years of misplaced priorities, my colleagues Juro Osawa, Jing Yang and I reported yesterday. Over the past few years, TikTok focused on its negotiations with CFIUS—an interagency panel looking into ByteDance’s 2017 purchase of the Musical.ly app, which ByteDance then merged into TikTok—and its $1.5 billion proposal to safeguard U.S. user data known as Project Texas.
Naples man, Bonita Springs woman die in Little Hickory Bay boat crash in North Naples
Two Southwest Florida residents died on Friday in a boat crash that remains under investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
John C. Moulder and Judy M. Eaton, both 71, suffered fatal injuries when the 21' Cobia Open Bay boat they were on crashed into the mangrove trees near Little Hickory Bay, Florida Fish and Wildlife said in a statement.
Moulder was from Naples and Eaton was from Bonita Springs.
Moulder and Eaton were the only occupants of the boat and no other vessels were involved in the crash, Florida Fish and Wildlife said.
Eaton was found in the trees and pronounced dead at the scene, while Moulder died from his injuries in a local hospital after being recovered from the water.
Collier had no boating death s in 2021 or 2022, according to the most recent statistical report released by Florida Fish and Wildlife.
Authorities have not released any further information as the investigation continues.
