After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. I thought that I would drop you a line to say how very pleased we were with the help and support we got from Kostas and Josiane in Ancasta Badalona. We always felt that they were working for us, not just to make a sale. Greetings from Gibraltar. I just want to thank you all for such an amazing job getting Starseeker to handover in Gibraltar on 2nd August. I must admit that it was a bit of an emotional day for me because not only is the boat fabulous, but everyone has been so professional and helpful along the journey since I placed the order back in July 2022.  It has been a big learning curve for me as it is the first time I have ever bought a boat, let alone a new one.  What I have realised is that everyone involved is like a big family, and that it really matters that clients are delighted on handover. I really liked the little surprises on the day too.  At the commissioning meeting with Chris & Veronica I did comment about my love of a cuppa, and I was delighted to find a pack of Yorkshire Tea with cups ready for me to brew up. Batfish V is well constructed, Italian designed and built performance cruiser/racer from Studio Vallicelli and Comar Yachts. The brokers say this design is rare to the UK market, and ideally suited for club/offshore racing, or family cruising. Launched in 2007 and with just three owners from new (the first being the UK importer), this yacht well specified and has had lots of recent updates and maintenance.

She has a spacious and comfortable cruising interior comprising three double cabins and two heads, a spacious saloon and galley, making her ideal for shorthanded cruising/racing or family sailing.

For Sale: Hallberg-Rassy 46

SwiftSure Yachts is advertising the Hallberg-Rassy 46 Allura for sale at an asking price of $420,000. The 2003 build is lying in Portland, Maine, at the Maine Yacht Center, where showings are available by appointment.

Allura is built for short-handed coastal and ocean cruising. There is redundancy in key functions for reliability, along with pushbutton conveniences in the hydraulic main and genoa furling, powered winches, bow thruster, hydraulic vang and backstay.

For comfort on board, features include a hard dodger, full cockpit enclosure, air conditioning, dual forced air diesel heaters, a fridge and freezer, and a Spectra watermaker. The interior is finished in warm satin mahogany with off-white port coverings. 

According to SwiftSure’s team, the sailboat’s electronics were recently upgraded. There’s now a with Furuno multifunction display in the cockpit, along with Raymarine instruments, AIS, VHF radio and redundant autopilots. Powering the electronics is an electrical system with an 8 kw genset, 12- and 24-volt alternators, battery chargers, a shore power transformer to accommodate 110 or 220 volts, and a bank of AGM house batteries.

Also noteworthy is Allura ’s history as a proven cruising platform. The original owner had the yacht delivered to Seattle and then cruised the Pacific Northwest for three years. Then, Allura sailed to New England. The current owner bought the yacht in 2008 and has used her during summers in New England, with the yacht being stowed inside for all but one winter (when Allura was stored outside, fully covered, during the pandemic). 

The current owner also prepared the yacht for a trans-Atlantic trip that had to be canceled during the pandemic, but the yacht remains ready to undertake ocean passages and long-distance itineraries.

Some additional key features aboard Allura include a 2019 Highfield RIB that’s 10 feet long with an 8-horsepower Yamaha engine, and redundant autopilot drives. The brokerage house says there’s an extensive maintenance history and lists the boat in “very good condition.” 

“I can’t say enough about Hallberg-Rassy 46s in general,” the broker noted. “It’s tough to imagine a finer bluewater cruising sailboat. I’ve have had the pleasure of logging thousands of miles, delivering Hallberg-Rassy 46s in Sweden, up and down both coasts of the U.S., and in Mexico. This is far and away one of the nicest bluewater cruising boats available.”

What kind of equipment is in the galley? Allura has a Force Ten stove and oven with three burners; a Xintex propane solenoid switch with a fume-detection alarm; an Ewave microwave oven and a Hela turbo cabin fan.

Several reports have suggested at least two people have died after being parachutes carrying air dropped aid failed to open. 

Turkey news agency Anadolu shared a video of the rapidly falling packages earlier today. 

It said several people had been killed and injured by the deliveries. 

Medical sources told the outlet that the wounded had been transferred to al Shifa hospital and the Baptist hospital in northern Gaza.

Al Jazeera said there had been reports of at least five fatalities. 

Sky News has verified footage of the incident but has not been able to confirm the number of fatalities. 

In the last 24 hours, at least three people have starved to death in Gaza as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. 

Three-year-old Ahmed Wael Ahl died of hunger and dehydration, as did a 15-year-old child in Al-Shifa Medical Complex, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said,

 A 72-year-old man died from malnutrition and dehydration in Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, it added. 

The rights group warned the number of deaths was showing a "notable increase" among children and the elderly. 

As of last night, the official number of hunger and malnutrition related deaths in Gaza stood at 20, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run enclave. 

However, the organisation said the figure only accounted for the fatalities that occur inside hospitals, all of which are partially operational and difficult to reach due to road destruction and fuel shortages. 

"The truly tragic situation lies within the remaining destroyed neighbourhoods throughout the Gaza Strip, where tens of thousands of people live in extremely harsh conditions due to unprecedented levels of famine," it said. 

"These people risk their lives with every attempt to travel to Israeli checkpoints, where aid trucks sporadically arrive, given that Israeli army forces have deliberately and repeatedly targeted those trying to secure aid for themselves and their families.

"Starving individuals are also risking their lives by going to agricultural lands in dangerous border areas in an attempt to obtain some of the remaining crops." 

UN representatives have accused Israel of destroying Gaza's food system as part of a broader "starvation campaign", and some have suggested people trying to fish have been fired on. 

The situation has become an issue on global attention with several countries including the UK, US and the UAE increasing efforts to get aid into Gaza. 

As we have been reporting throughout the day, countries have committed to creating a maritime corridor to assist and the US has said it will build a temporary port for deliveries - you can read more about this in our 11.53 post. 

Aid has been dropped using parachutes from an aircraft flying over the Gaza.

The delivery came after US President Joe Biden announced that the military will set up a temporary port off the region's Mediterranean coast to support deliveries.

Efforts to ramp up aid deliveries have jumped dramatically as frustration in the United States and Europe over Israel's conduct in the war grows. 

Aid flow into Gaza has dropped sharply since the Israel-Hamas war began five months ago.

Over the past days, trucks carrying products including food, bottled water, cooking oil and flour have been moving from Egypt through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings.

Mr Biden's announcement of the seaport plan underscored how the United States is having to go around Israel, its main Middle East ally, to get aid into Gaza, including through airdrops that started last week.

It comes as concerns over a potential famine continue to rise, with the region's health ministry reporting at least 20 people have died from malnutrition and dehydration at the north’s Kamal Adwan and Shifa hospitals. 

Earlier today, the UK and the European Commission announced plans to create a maritime corridor to help aid reach Gaza. 

The project will be carried out with the help of several other countries, and comes after the US said it would build a temporary port in the besieged region to help aid efforts.

What is it aiming to do?

The corridor will aim to deliver "much-needed additional amounts of humanitarian assistance by sea", the countries announced in a joint statement. 

"The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with innocent Palestinian families and children desperate for basic necessities," it added.

"This maritime corridor can - and must - be part of a sustained effort to increase the flow of humanitarian aid and commercial commodities into Gaza through all possible routes." 

How will it work?

While we don't know the specifics of the route or how it will operate, we do know Cyprus will be responsible for establishing the mechanism for securely shipping the aid from its land to Gaza via the sea. 

The model will work in coordination with the UN's senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag. 

He has been charged with "facilitating, coordinating, monitoring, and verifying the flow of aid" into the besieged region, the statement said. 

"The dedicated efforts of the UAE to mobilize support for the Initiative will result in the initial shipment of food by sea to the people of Gaza," it added.

What happens next? 

The countries said Cyprus would soon convene senior officials to discuss how to accelerate the maritime channel, "supplementing land and air routes, including from Egypt and Jordan". 

"The delivery of humanitarian assistance directly to Gaza by sea will be complex, and our nations will continue to assess and adjust our efforts to ensure we deliver aid as effectively as possible," they added. 

Finland will send seven soldiers to participate in crisis management operations in the Red Sea, its prime minister's office has said. 

A maximum of five of the soldiers will take part in a European Union's Naval Force operation. 

The other two will participate in the US-led military operation called Prosperity Guardian.

"The soldiers work in operations staff positions," it added. 

A ship carrying humanitarian aid will head to Gaza today, the European Commission president has said. 

Ursula von der Leyen said the ship, belonging to Spain's Open Arms charity, will make a pilot voyage to test the recently announced maritime corridor - you can read about this in our 10.23am post. 

It has been waiting at Cyprus's port of Larnaca for permission to deliver food aid from World Central Kitchen, a US charity founded by celebrity chef Jose Andres, she added. 

She said the EU, together with the US, the United Arab Emirates and other involved partner countries were launching the sea corridor to deliver large quantities of aid. 

Efforts to dramatically ramp up deliveries have signalled growing frustration across Europe and the United States with Israel's conduct in the war.

Yesterday, US President Joe Biden announced a plan to open an offshore port to help deliver aid. 

Israel accuses Hamas of commandeering some aid deliveries.

Iran's military and security leaders have been "increasingly discussing" the need to expand their presence around the Red Sea, a leading US thinktank has said. 

In its latest update on the situation in the Middle East, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said Iran would probably use an expanding military presence to threaten commercial traffic. 

It has been supporting Houthi attacks on global commerce in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden for months. 

It comes after a senior military adviser to the Iranian supreme leader Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy and Aerospace Force should "focus" on the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea earlier this week. 

"Iran has invested in recent years in building surface vessels that are capable of hosting fast attack craft, drones, helicopters, and missiles," the ISW said. 

"These vessels would not likely survive conventional engagements against the US Navy or other modern militaries—but they are optimized for the sort of commerce raiding that has long been a feature of Iranian regional strategy." 

Europe will help to launch a maritime corridor in Gaza in a bid to get more aid into the region, the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said. 

Her announcement comes after the US confirmed it will build a port in the besieged region, and the UK said it was assisting in creating a maritime corridor with the country and other partners. 

Speaking in Cyprus, Ms von der Leyen said Gaza was facing a "humanitarian catastrophe" and Europe "stands by the innocent civilians". 

She said she was hopeful the corridor will open this Saturday or Sunday. 

"I am very glad to see that an initial pilot operation will be launched today," she added.

In Rafah, Palestinians have been inspecting the site of an Israeli strike. 

A house was reduced to rubble in the attack, with people sifting through piles of debris. 

The southern Gaza city has been the site of numerous attacks in recent months, despite it being home to hundreds of thousands of people who have fled from the north in an attempt to seek safety. 

The UK will help open a "maritime corridor" to help aid get into Gaza, the foreign secretary has announced. 

Lord Cameron said the country will work alongside the US and other partners to open the route to tackle the "desperate humanitarian need" in the region. 

"We continue to urge Israel to allow more trucks into Gaza as the fastest way to get aid to those who need it," he added. 

The US previously announced it would build a port in the besieged region to help get aid into the area. 

Officials said it will be built to allow more shipments of food, medicine and other essential items - but it will take weeks to complete.

The operation will not require American troops on the ground, with one official noting the military has "unique capabilities" and can do things from "just offshore."
