  • Hatteras Yachts

by David Pascoe

A long with Bertram and Hinckley, Hatteras has the distinction of being one of the first three production fiberglass boat builders to start up in around 1960. Oddly enough all three survive today, although Bertram may yet go by the wayside. The company was started in 1959 by North Carolina knitting mill owner Willis Slane who, as word has it, just wanted to build a good strong boat for himself for fishing the outer banks. What followed is one of the unparalleled success stories of the fiberglass boat building industry.

Oddly enough, of the three major startups in around 1960 - Bertram, Hinckely and Hatteras - the former are know for producing boat hulls that almost never blister. Hatteras should have applied for a patent on the blistering process, for they were one of the worst offenders. Most likely this is because Hatteras has always painted their boats and has used low quality gelcoats that are prone to blistering, as well as lower quality resins, for gel coat alone does not account for the problem.

For the most part, Hatteras built balsa cored boats. In earlier years, up through about 1980, the hulls were solid glass, and then cored hull sides appeared. Decks and house tops have always been balsa cored. In fact, were it not for Hatteras, Baltec would probably not be in business today. If you want to know how good balsa is as a core material, try to find a Hatteras with a core problem. Out of thousands of boats produced, there are only a few. And speaking of balsa, if you've ever noticed that Hatteras yachts are notably quieter inside than most others, that's because of the wonderful acoustic properties of balsa.

When it comes to building good quality, consistent and reasonably priced motor yachts, no one had been able to hold a candle to Hatteras. Unlike Bertram, Hatteras recognized that wives often controlled the checkbook in the family, and didn't make the mistake of forgetting this important marketing factor like Bertram did. Thus, when the recession of '89 struck, Hatteras was at least poised to survive it, whereas Bertram had locked themselves into the sport fishing market exclusively, with their ugly formica interiors, and manly appointments. Thus, they went down with the end of the free-spending era of the 1980's. But were it not for the parent company's deep pockets, even Hatteras probably wouldn't have survived, for large boat sales were almost nonexistent for three long years.

Yet Hatteras has since abandoned a major part of the market that they had filled for so long, the medium size sport fisherman and motor yachts of a type that was renowned for their sea keeping abilities, having been designed by the famous designer Jack Hargrave. Two prominent examples of which are the 45 Convertible and 43 motor yacht. Today, the smallest boat they make is a fifty footer priced at well over one million dollars. And with Bertram not gaining much attention in the mid size range either, the days when we had a few good quality, rugged offshore type boats to choose from are over. All we are left with is an aging fleet of older Hatterai and Bertrams. The Bertram fleet once consisted of 21, 25, 26, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38, 42, 43, and 46 foot models. All that's left is are outrageously priced 36 and 39 footers which are rarely seen on the waterfront these days.

Unfortunately, no one has rushed in to fill the void created by the withdrawal of these two companies. Oh, sure a few have tried, but the most recent offerings don't even come close to duplicating these legends. So why did Hatteras abandon this market? Or why isn't Bertram doing well with their three boats under 50 feet? In a word, cost and lower profit margins.

To produce boats of this quality today simply costs more than the market will bear. Plus, they probably can't compete with the lower cost price leaders since fewer and fewer people are willing to pay the freight for better quality. Boats have gotten too fancy as people demand more and more amenities, more plush interiors, more appliances, electronics and whatnot. When you add up the cost of all this, and factor in the additional cost factor of substantially higher quality structures and systems, it's not hard to see how good quality boats quickly exceed the reach of most of those who desire them.

But, there is an additional factor as well, which is that the design of a good sea boat is not amenable to the creation of the vast interior spaces that people want today. Boat owners willingly sacrifice sea keeping ability for interior space. Mom takes one look at any good sea boat and says, "But it's so small inside! That Sea Ray was twice as big." Yeah, Mom, it is. but you can't shove a wide flat surface against an oncoming wave and not end up getting splattered against a bulkhead. There's no way you're going to take a Sea Ray to sea as you would a Hatteras.  Mom doesn't want to go to sea anyway. She'd prefer to stay lashed to the dock, close to the swimming pool and tennis courts. And that's why we don't have any more 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 53, 43, 45, 46, or 48 foot Hatterases anymore. People want floating condos, and the market will always give them what they want so long as enough of them want it. But there aren't enough people that want good sea boats.

So, until people decide either that they're tired of beating their brains out in floating condos, or get tired of staying tied to the dock, or just puttering around in protected waters, or they stop demanding the utmost in luxury, (I'm not holding my breath) the days of the middle class Hatteras are over.

Sad, but very true.

Hatteras Yachts: Your Resource Guide To Buying A New Boat

By Rob Bowman | Posted On Dec 27, 2018 Updated On Jun 03, 2020

For the last 60 years, Hatteras Yachts has been "obsessively over-building" every model simply because this is in the DNA of the company. It is a result of living in a part of the world that can produce some of the angriest seas around, namely Cape Hatteras to which they attribute their name. The Hatteras factory was built in New Bern, North Carolina right off of the Atlantic Coast and near some of the most turbulent offshore waters on the Eastern Seaboard. It was the vision of Willis Slane, the founder of Hatteras Yachts, to design and construct a yacht that would be uncompromising in its build, unrelenting in its performance, and unmatched in its craftsmanship. The rough Cape Hatteras seas were often too much for Slane's wooden boat to handle safely offshore. Each vessel would need to be built to such standards if it were to challenge the open ocean in search of billfish. Willis Slane, who had a strong passion for big game fishing, hired the young Jack Hargrave to create a boat that was both functional for fishing and family cruising, but also durable enough to withstand the angry seas off of Cape Hatteras.

The first Hatteras built was aptly named Knit Wits and was called a "Convertible", due to the open-air, upper helm station and its ability to transform into a family-friendly cruising boat. Knit Wits was important not just for Hatteras, but also for the entire boating industry as it challenged other boat builders to improve their designs.

Today, Hatteras Yachts is one of the most iconic sportfish and motor yacht builders in the world with models from 45 to over 100 feet. Hatteras even recently resurrected Cabo Yachts with a new design for one of the most popular models ever built, the 41 Open Express .

In this Hatteras Yachts resource guide for new owners, we will touch on the available models being offered by Hatteras, what makes a Hatteras special, a look at the pre-owned Hatteras market, and tips on what to expect as the owner of one. The team at United Yacht Sales has spent hours at the Hatteras factory learning about the product and have the expertise to help you find the right model for your needs. Give us a call today at (609) 780-0309 to start your journey on owning a new or pre-owned Hatteras today.

What makes a Hatteras Yacht special?

" People think we are crazy because our boats are a little bit heavier, but it's the strongest, most durable hull in the industry ." - Lucas Harth, Hatteras Construction Manager

Hatteras was special from day 1 considering the first boat they ever built was the first fiberglass boat over 40 feet ever to be designed. Decades later, Hatteras continues to be a trend-setter with the launch of the brand new GT65 Carolina . The GT65 will be the industry's first hull to be infused with the stringer system to make on single part, resulting in reduced weight and an even stronger hull. It's this commitment to hull design and construction that makes each Hatteras special. Today, Hatteras is one of the only boat builders in the world that uses a solid fiberglass bottom. Competing manufacturers substitute a core or wood bottom to reduce cost, but at the same this this decreases its overall strength and durability. While a Hatteras may be slightly heavier than similar models built elsewhere (The Hatteras GT59 at 59'9" weighs 89,000lbs while the Viking 58C at 58' 11" weighs just over 80,000lbs) the comfort at cruising speed, and even at WOT, is noticeable. Additionally, the new models are designed with a convex and modified-v hull shape as well as double chine and side "step-outs". This gives each Hatteras the best performance possible under any sea condition and ensures that everyone on board will stay dry and comfortable. The interior space also benefits from this as it gives more volume to each living space inside. Hatteras' commitment to building a boat worthy of battling the waters off of Cape Hatteras is apparent in every sportfish and motor yacht they build.

Video: The Hatteras Experience

Construction and design aren't the only reasons Hatteras has separated itself from the competition. They have also invested heavily in the owner's experience. Recently, Hatteras launched a complete ship management control system called Hattcon  in select models. This yacht automation system has been fully integrated into a proprietary new interface that allows you to control everything from lighting on board, video streaming, AC & heat regulation, and all of the boat's montoring systems right through an app downloaded on your apple device. The new system was recently integrated into the Hatteras M90 Panacera , making it the new standard in yachting when paired with Hatteras' seakeeping abilities and high-quality fit and finishes. Below is an example of what some of the Hattcon interfaces look like:

You've Decided You Want To Buy A Hatteras Yacht. What's Next?

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a new or slightly used Hatteras Yacht. What size should you get and what is your budget? Will there be a boat in stock or do I need to order one? If I order one, how long will that take? Do I need a captain or can I drive it myself? The best advice we can possibly give you at this stage of the process is to consult with an experienced United Yacht broker who knows the Hatteras market and can guide you through the process of determining what the best fit is for your needs. A thorough consultation about all of the steps in the process, what you need to determine you want as the buyer, and what decisions need to be made to help the factory execute on their commitment will help you feel more confident and comfortable with this important investment you are making for your lifestyle.

1.) Where can I physically get on to a Hatteras and learn about the different models? Boat Shows are a great place to spend time with an authorized factory representative and crawl on board each of the different models. Hatteras typically brings almost all of their new boat models to the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in November and the Miami Boat Show in February. Regional shows like the Palm Beach Show tend to have some new models there, but not as many as the major shows. If you're serious about owning a Hatteras, this is truly the best way to get to know the boats. There are also factory tours where you can meet your United sales professional at the factory to see how each boat is built, meet with the design team, tour the wood-working facility, and see the different phases of production. Finally, the "Hatteras Club" is held once per year, generally at the end of Summer in South Florida. Potential owners are invited to this exclusive event for two days of sea trials, tours of each model, and introductions to the Hatteras team.

2.) How financially strong is Hatteras as a company? It's no secret that Hatteras struggled through the economic recession from 2008 through 2011 like many other boat builders. It was in the wake of this event that Hatteras and Cabo were purchased from Brunswick Corporation by Versa Capital Management in 2013. Versa, based in Philadelphia, is a private equity investment firm with over $1 billion in assets which includes companies like Eastern Mountain Sports and Bob's Stores. Versa has injected Hatteras with enough capital to invest in new models (the Hatteras GT59 is a great example which will debut at the upcoming Miami Yacht Show) and build stock boats without waiting on customer orders. In other words, Hatteras Yachts has the financial backing to continue building the highest quality sportfishing and motor yachts for a very long time.

3.) I already own a boat and I need to sell it before I purchase a Hatteras. What do I do? You have three options - trade it in, sell it yourself, or list it with a professional yacht broker . The Hatteras factory has taken trades in the past and would need to evaluate your boat. Typically the trade in value you receive on a boat, no matter what company you work with, is going to be less money than if you sold it outright. Selling it yourself will recoup the most money but will be hard to do without access to putting it on the industry MLS database and Yachtworld. Selling it yourself is also a commitment in time as potential buyers will want to see it and sea trial it, sometimes multiple times. Hiring a professional United Yacht broker to list and sell your yacht means that your boat has access to the largest network of boat buyers and sellers in the world. With more than 150 brokers worldwide, no other firm has the number of team members we do that work together to sell your yacht . With our custom marketing program to help sell your existing boat quickly and for the highest price possible, you will be enjoying your new Hatteras in no time.

4.) Do I need to hire a captain? This is a conversation that your United Yacht broker will have with you. Whether or not you need a licensed captain depends on what Hatteras model you choose and the experience you have behind the helm. The new Cabo 41 Express or the Hatteras GT45X are greatly entry-level sportfishing boats that are perfect for an owner/operator. Once you move up to some of the larger motor yachts like the M75 Panacera or a bigger convertible like the GT70 , a captain and crew may become a necessity. Captains can also be hired to professionally maintain your Hatteras from making sure it gets necessary service, cleaning it regularly, running the engines consistently, and keeping it in optimal shape. This makes it easier to sell when you're ready and can demand more of an asking price on the open market. United brokers typically have relationships with captains that can benefit our customers when one is needed. There are also web services like Boat Captain's Directory for example that can help you find a captain, however they will not have been vetted by our team.

5.) Why are new Hatteras Yachts so expensive? Hatteras Yachts are among the highest quality, best built boats in the industry and are not a lower tier brand. There is more that goes into the construction of a Hatteras along with the premium components on board that demand and deserve a higher price tag. From the vinylester resin infusion process to the high-level of quality control that goes into each vessel, there is simply more time and more expensive materials than less expensive competitive brands that don't deliver the same experience as a Hatteras. We recommend watching the BoatTest video called " Hatteras Yachts - Why So Expensive ".

What Hatteras Model Should I Choose?nbsp;

Which Hatteras Model To Choose

The first question you need to ask yourself when trying to decide what Hatteras you want to buy is whether or not you want to fish. The Hatteras GT series is widely known as some of the best sport fishing yachts built today and compete in the major Billfishing tournaments. While the Hatteras sportfish can also be used for pleasure cruising due to their spacious interior accommodations, the Hatteras motor yacht Panacera series is for the more traditional yachtsman that values entertaining and extended cruising on board their yacht.

Hatteras Sportfish :

As mentioned earlier, the Hatteras GT45X is the entry-level model for the brand which also has three variations: the GT45X Open , the GT45X Flybridge , and the GT45X Sport Tower . Each option is powered with twin Cat C-12.9 diesel engines with the option to increase your horsepower to 850 MHP for an exhilarating performance. Hatteras builds five additional models from the GT 54 up to the GT70 which is the flagship model of the sportfishing series. The newest models are the GT 59 and GT65 Carolina , both of which benefit from the patented Hatteras hull design and reach speeds in excess of 40 knots.

Hatteras Motor Yachts :

Hatteras may have started with building high-quality sportfishermen, but they have also become one of the top motor yacht builders in America today. The Panacera series begins at 60-feet with the M60 which Hatteras describes as "sleek, sporty, and deceptively spacious". The fully-fiberglass hull is stronger than normal thus providing more available space and larger windows for the interior of the yacht. The Hatteras M75 and M90 Panacera complete the model series in spectacular fashion. Each model features a stunning moon roof, massive flybridge space for entertaining, multiple relaxation zones, and accommodations that rival any competitive brand. Hatteras also recently announced plans to build a 105' Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht which will be their largest resin-infused hull ever built.

The latest motor yacht model from the iconic builder, the M98 Panacera , might only be 100-feet in length overall, but she was designed like a superyacht. Offered in either an open flybridge, partially enclosed skylounge, or fully enclosed bridge, the personalization options are seemingly endless. Built for both cruising and formal entertaining, the outdoor social spaces rival any luxury European yacht while the Hatteras fully fiberglass hull performs tremendously. There are multiple propulsion options as well from CAT and MTU from 1,600 BHP to 2,600 BHP diesel engines.

Power & Motor Yacht Test The Hatteras M90 Panacera

Hatteras Yachts M90 Panacera Model Series

Why does Hatteras use Caterpillar engines for their new models? From the GT45X to the M90 Panacera, every Hatteras is powered by a Caterpillar (CAT) engine . It's widely known that CAT marine engines set the standard for quality, reliability and performance even under strenuous decisions. With Hatteras having a slightly heavier hull than the competition, it was important for Hatteras designers to still be able to reach certain speeds at cruise and WOT. The new GT59 for example is powered with twin CAT C-32A diesel engines which offer the option to increase horsepower to 1,622 MHP. Even though she weighs 89,000 pounds, the GT59 is still able to attain a top speed over 40 knots. So, performance is important to Hatteras which was a main reason for choosing Cat to power each boat, but the after-service focus on the customer is what also sets CAT apart. CAT Concierge Service puts their marine engine professionals literally a phone call away for general maintenance and service questions as well as factory access to get issues fixed quickly. The extended service coverage offered by CAT also gives Hatteras owners peace of mind when it comes to the unknown maintenance issues that could potentially arise.

Here is a video walk-around on the CAT C-32A engines that power the GT59 and other models:

Hatteras Yachts

Hatteras yachts for sale.

A leader in design and manufacture of fiberglass yachts, Hatteras started production in 1960. Two main styles offered convertible sportfisherman or aft cabin motor yachts, with models stating at 40ft. The market demanded larger yachts and Hatteras was able to meet that demand with the largest fiberglass vessel built at the time.

First at 50ft then growing to 90ft+ convertibles on the market today. Hatteras is known for their engineering and production of the highest quality yachts on the markets today. These yachts are a classic with many still in use today, most have been refitted more than once, each time updating the interior and systems to match the current day and technology.

White River Marine Group Acquires Legendary Boat Builder Hatteras

Company announces expansion of Hatteras with iconic MAKO and Ranger Saltwater boat brands to relocate to modernized state-of-the-art coastal manufacturing center

hatteras yachts about

Passion for fishing drives vision to establish New Bern, N.C. as “the saltwater sportfishing boat building capital of the world.”

NEW BERN, NC – Noted angler and conservationist Johnny Morris, who founded and grew both Bass Pro Shops and White River Marine Group to become North America’s premier outdoor and conservation company, today announced plans for a significant expansion of its saltwater manufacturing footprint with the acquisition of Hatteras Inc. The legendary maker of saltwater fishing boats is based in New Bern, North Carolina, a premier location for saltwater fishing.

hatteras yachts about

Hatteras leapt to the forefront of the sportfishing industry more than 60 years ago, with ruggedly built saltwater boats that earned a reputation for high-performance. Just how impactful is the influence of Hatteras Yachts on the offshore boating landscape? Transformational. When Willis Slane, Hatteras’ founder, built the 41’ Knit Wits in 1959, it was the world’s first fiberglass boat over 40-feet in length.

From the groundbreaking hull number one, Hatteras has earned a reputation for industry-leading performance, innovation and seaworthiness. Engineered to stand up to the unforgiving conditions of North Carolina, Hatteras Yachts can be found all over the world. The brand’s trademark lies not only in technical innovation, but in the effortless blending of luxury with performance.

Today, it continues to build exceptional yachts and quality sportfishing boats. The White River Marine Group provides an incredible platform to usher in the next era of the historic brand.

The brand will become part of the White River Marine Group, the world’s largest boat manufacturer. The family of brands includes TRACKER BOATS, the No. 1 fishing boat in America for the past 45 years; ASCEND, the world’s best-selling kayaks; and other leading brands including MAKO, Ranger, Triton, Tahoe, Nitro and others.

The addition will shift the focus of the company’s saltwater manufacturing from the Midwest to the Atlantic seashore, closer to the saltwater market and a thriving community of craftsmen and women. The company will continue to support and grow Hatteras, as well as relocate production of iconic saltwater boat brands MAKO and Ranger Saltwater to New Bern, which is poised to become the new world capital for offshore angling and boating.

hatteras yachts about

While White River plans to continue to produce a limited number of exceptional Hatteras yachts, the primary focus will be devoted to building the next generation of the very finest sportfishing boats ever made. Uniting the Bass Pro Shops family of brands with Hatteras Yachts promises good things for the offshore sportfishing industry.

Bass Pro Shops has long been a leader in conservation across North America. The company’s heritage is defined by not simply supporting conservation, but actively driving it.

Plans call for a major investment to modernize the Hatteras facility and establish a state-of-the-art coastal manufacturing center generating hundreds of new jobs. Consistent with Bass Pro’s reputation for turning shopping for outdoor gear into an experiential adventure, the plant will offer customers demo rides on the Atlantic Ocean and opportunities to tour the factory. It will also serve as an R&D center for sea-trialing and product development across all three brands.

The move frees up capacity at existing manufacturing plants in Miami, Oklahoma and Flippin, Arkansas for additional freshwater boat production, with zero job losses anticipated.

Driven by passion for fishing

Boating and fishing have been at the heart of Bass Pro Shops since its founding in 1972, when avid young angler Johnny Morris started selling bait and tackle in 8 square feet in the back of his father’s liquor store in Springfield, Missouri.

Six years later, Morris revolutionized the marine industry when he introduced the world’s first “fish ready” professionally rigged and nationally marketed boat, motor and trailer package, the Bass Tracker. For the first time, fishermen could buy quality fishing boats “factory direct” at tremendous savings, allowing thousands of families to access the water for the first time. In Hatteras, Morris identified the same qualities responsible for Bass Pro’s growth and success – pride, quality and craftsmanship.

“We are inspired by the many similarities between the pride and passion of the master boat builders from our home in the Ozarks and the legendary boat builders of North Carolina and the New Bern area in particular. Both share the same genuine commitment to American craftsmanship, with scores of family members working together and generations of highly experienced boat builders taking pride in what they do,” said Johnny. “We’re committed to support Hatteras in staying true to its roots as a legendary saltwater brand built by a passion for fishing while expanding our operations to better serve all those who love the sea.”

Passion for offshore angling

Morris himself has long been familiar with Hatteras and offshore angling off the coast of North Carolina. On March 3, 1995, while fishing sunken World War II ships 25 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras not far from New Bern, Morris caught and released what was, at the time, a single day record 31 giant bluefin tuna, estimated to weigh more than 12,000 pounds, on rod and reel.

To honor the legacy of dear friend and North Carolina conservation hero Eddie Bridges, Johnny Morris also announced a $1 million conservation pledge focused on the coastal area, to be paid over 5 years .

Mr. Bridges, who was scheduled to attend today’s announcement ceremonies, passed away earlier this week. Eddie leaves behind a lasting impact in North Carolina, having established the North Carolina Wildlife Endowment Fund and not-for-profit North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Foundation.

The pledge awards several significant grants to conservation organizations actively working to advance wildlife and habitat conservation in North Carolina. The grants are funded in part by the not-for-profit Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, which unites millions of passionate sportsmen and women by inviting them to round up their purchases to join the company’s efforts as partners in conservation.

First year commitments include:

  • $100,000 to the North Carolina Wildlife Habitat Foundation : As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, the Foundation assists in the acquisition, management and protection of wildlife habitat within the state of North Carolina and promote conservation education for the benefit of future generations.
  • $50,000 to the University of Maine for a North Carolina-based Atlantic bluefin tuna satellite tagging project . One of the most sought-after gamefish in the world, the research project will assess the status of the Atlantic bluefin tuna population and set management and conservation goals to ensure the long-term sustainability of the species.
  • $50,000 to the International Game Fish Association for a rigorous Marlin satellite tagging project . As the world’s largest citizen science billfish conservation project of its kind, the research is designed to better understand population connectivity on a global level to help ensure long-term conservation.

Committed to Conserving Marine Fisheries: The grants reflect Johnny’s steadfast commitment to positively impact marine fisheries. He previously co-chaired the Morris-Deal Commission on Saltwater Recreational Fisheries Management, leading to the congressional reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act in June 2015, advancing key saltwater recreational fishing priorities across the nation’s marine fisheries.

Several prominent conservation leaders from around the state and nation were on-hand to participate in the announcement including:

  • Jeff Angers, President, Center for Sportfishing Policy
  • Jason Schratwieser, President, International Game Fish Association
  • Ellen Peel, President, Billfish Foundation
  • Kyle Briggs, Deputy Director, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission
  • Teena Koury, Vice Chairman, North Carolina Habitat Foundation
  • Gordon Myers, Retired Director, North Carolina Resources Commission
  • Walt Golet, Ph.D, Professor, University of Maine School of Marine Sciences

“This is not just a business investment for us,” said Morris. “It’s at the heart of who we are. Fishing, boating and conservation have been lifelong shared passions in our company, and we are grateful to our team members and independent dealer network members for their boundless enthusiasm and support. We are honored to be a part of the New Bern community. Our goal is to grow operations in North Carolina and expand upon the legendary foundation of the Hatteras brand and its incredible people.”

Morris added, “We love the passion for fishing and commitment to craftsmanship found in New Bern. We’re very grateful to Governor Cooper and his team, as well as community officials and leaders including Craven County Manager Jack Veit and Craven County Board of Commissioners Chairperson Jason Jones for their genuine welcoming spirit and their leadership in supporting our vision to invest in this incredible community.”

Committed to North Carolina : The New Bern facility is an opportunity to strengthen Bass Pro Shops’ 22-year history in the state, which began with the opening of the company’s Outdoor World store in Concord, North Carolina in 1999. A longstanding friendship between Johnny and North Carolina-based racing legend Richard Childress has resulted in a significant partnership promoting iconic outdoor brands to a global audience through major NASCAR sponsorships.

ABOUT HATTERAS YACHTS

Hatteras Yachts was born out of the treacherous waters that surround Cape Hatteras. For centuries, this fabled part of the mighty Atlantic has been subjected to the worst of nature’s wrath. It was here that Willis Slane was inspired to construct a yacht that would thrive in the fabled Graveyard of the Atlantic.

More than 50 years later, Hatteras Yachts is still the foremost leader in the construction of fiberglass yachts. Attention to detail, innovative thinking and impeccable quality have kept generations of customers coming back to Hatteras to fulfill their next yachting dream.

Hatteras Yachts is proud to present its entire fleet of sportfishing convertibles and motor yachts. They are not simply yachts, but our life’s pursuit.

THE HATTERAS ADVANTAGES

Performance.

From the moment you fire up the engines and cut through your first wave, the Hatteras Advantage is apparent. As our naval architects and engineers know, deep V-design hulls have a tendency to roll and incur high hull resistance. Flat-bottom hulls offer less resistance but pound in normal sea conditions. Thus, Hatteras has developed a series of convex and modified-V hulls that provide the best of both designs. These hulls deliver a sharp entry and a soft, stable ride – the renowned “Hatteras ride”. Further, most Hatteras hulls feature a double chine with hull side “step-outs” to help reduce spray while increasing the beam above the waterline. The benefits – a dryer ride and more interior space.

Hatteras also uses in-house designed 6- and 7-bladed nibral propellers custom built to our specifications. These propellers are dynamically balanced to effectively match the boat’s weight, speed, horsepower and reduction gear. Using large blade area ratios, the propeller’s load is distributed over a greater prop area. This reduces cavitation, vibration and noise and, at the same time, improves fuel economy and performance.

Hatteras engineers specify deep gear ratios combined with larger propellers to obtain optimum performance. There are many advantages to turning a larger propeller slower:

U sing advanced propulsion theories, Hatteras has also incorporated propeller tunnels into the hull bottom design. Tunnels allow the shaft angle to be reduced, which aids in the boat’s efficiency. This reduces the overall draft and allows the use of larger propellers to achieve the performance benefits above.

Only Hatteras provides the deep gear ratios needed to deliver the high performance you demand under full-load and real-world sea conditions – with the renowned Hatteras ride.

Custom Electrical Systems

The electrical panel isn’t something that most boaters get over-excited about unless they’re aboard a CABO. Each of our electrical systems is built by master marine electricians who are at the top of their game.

Closed, the electrical panel displays all switched electrical systems, with the components clearly labeled and backlit, allowing visual review and fingertip control. Opened, the clarity of the layout becomes even more evident; divided into AC and DC units, all wires are neatly bundled and labeled, and follow perfectly parallel lines. The CABO electrical system is just one more example of the superior quality found in our highly respected yachts.

The Legacy of Hatteras Yachts

Designs that inspire.

Hatteras engineers never stop looking for new ways to achieve higher performance standards without sacrificing the safety or integrity of our yachts. In the process, we have developed numerous effective innovations that have benefited not just our customers, but the entire boating industry.

HULL TUNNELS

Early hull tunnels were really little more than “blisters” used to add propeller tip clearance under the hull. But in the late 1980s, Hatteras became the first production fiberglass builder of 50-foot-plus yachts to use true tunnels that actually penetrated the plane of the hull. In the years since, we have continued to lead in tunnel design by applying military technology that is now available to the public, providing our boat owners with the best handling and efficiency possible.

FULL RESIN-INFUSED HULLS

Hatteras has been using resin-infusion technology to create strong and lightweight decks, bulkheads, and other boat parts for years. But in 2008, we became the first yacht manufacturer to offer a fully resin-infused hull, on our 60 Convertible. The technology has since spread throughout our sportfishing and cruising lines. Resin infusion saves significant weight and adds stiffness while still providing the world-class ride our owners expect. It also means a much cleaner operation that virtually eliminates airborne pollutants, benefiting all boaters and non-boaters alike.

DEEP GEARS, LARGE SHAFTS &

Big propellers.

It is more efficient to move a large mass slowly than it is to move a small mass quickly. Hatteras applied this principle in the mid-1980s when it unveiled a 48 Convertible that featured a reduction gear of 2:1. Large-diameter, 2.5-inch, high-strength alloy shafts delivered additional torque to the propellers, making Hatteras the first pleasure craft company to use this approach to propulsion design. It is an approach that is only now being fully appreciated (and replicated) by the rest of the industry.

MULTI-BLADE PROPELLERS

Hatteras became the first yacht manufacturer to use five-bladed propellers when we convinced Rolla to design its first pair in 1985. The propellers helped our engineers significantly reduce engine vibration and increase efficiencies due to the additional blade area. We’ve continued our leading role in this area with the development of six-bladed (1995) and seven-bladed (2000) props. An eight-bladed propeller is currently in development and promises our customers even better performance.

QUICK-DISCONNECTS

In 1980, Hatteras engineers developed and patented the quick-disconnect device for fast and easy fluid transfers, including oil change for gears, engines, and generators; waste oil pump-out; clean oil addition; fresh and saltwater wash-downs; and dockside hookup. Other builders use renditions of the device in limited applications, but we remain the only major yacht manufacturer to use the original stainless-steel version throughout our vessels.

ELECTRICAL CODES

Few boat builders commit such time, energy, and expense to electrical safety as Hatteras does. While many competitors cite ABYC standards, few actually meet those standards throughout their electrical systems. Hatteras not only meets the standards, but helped author them, resulting in more safety and reliability for our owners.

Every customer is unique and no one understands that better than Reel Torque Yachts. This is because we don’t just sell yachts, but make it a point to understand our customer’s particular needs and applications before making any recommendations.

Kusler Yachts provides insight and updates on the acquisition of Hatteras Yachts.

The White River Marine Group, part of the Bass Pro Shops family of brands, purchased Hatteras Yachts and facility in New Bern, North Carolina. The White River Marine Group is the world’s largest boating manufacturer. Its holdings include lines: Ranger, Mako, Tracker, and a number of others.

The White River Marine Group boasts a long history of boating innovation. Its origin lies in the 1978 when Johnny Morris introduced the Bass Tracker. The Tracker was bass fishing’s first every ready-to-fish boat, motor and trailer package.  The company’s platform and history of innovation are well suited to ushering in the next era of Hatteras.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced the purchase in the Hatteras New Bern, N.C. plant standing in front of the 40’ fiberglass NitWits, the first Hatteras ever built more than 60 years ago.

Image 4406:

The company will make a significant investment in New Bern, creating its first coastal manufacturing site and adding Hatteras to its portfolio of well-known brands.

“Boat and marine manufacturing requires specialized and experienced workers, and White River Marine knows our state can deliver the people they need to successfully expand their business in New Bern,” said Governor Cooper.

White River Marine Group White River Marine Group (WRMG), an affiliate of Missouri-based Bass Pro Shops, is the world’s largest manufacturer of boats. Founded by noted angler and conservationist Johnny Morris, WRMG builds legendary performance boat brands like TRACKER, the No. 1 fishing boat in America for the past 45 years in terms of units sold, and ASCEND, the world’s best-selling kayaks. Other leading brands include MAKO, Ranger, Nitro, Triton, Tahoe, Sun Tracker and Regency pontoon boats.

The expansion will shift the focus of the company’s saltwater manufacturing from the Midwest to the sea, closer to the saltwater market and a thriving community of craftsmen and women. The company will continue to support and grow Hatteras, as well as relocate production of iconic saltwater boat brands MAKO and Ranger Saltwater to New Bern, which is a premier location for saltwater fishing.

Major Investment in Hatteras Manufacturing Plans call for a major investment to modernize the Hatteras facility and establish a state-of-the-art coastal manufacturing center generating hundreds of new jobs.

Morris is a big fan of the area and has spent many days fishing in the Outer Banks for big tuna and marlin. The local sportfishing culture is a major inspiration for the company to relocate its saltwater manufacturing.

Morris is a Long-Time Fan of Hatteras Yachts “With Hatteras’ rich heritage of craftsmanship and access to some of the world’s best offshore angling, our aim is to help solidify New Bern as the world’s capital for saltwater gamefish and boat building,” said noted conservationist and avid angler Johnny Morris, who founded and grew both Bass Pro Shops and White River Marine Group to become North America’s premier outdoor and conservation company.

“We love the passion for fishing and commitment to craftsmanship found in New Bern. We’re very grateful to Governor Cooper and his team, as well as local officials and leaders including Craven County Manager Jack Veit and Craven County Board of Commissioners Chairperson Jason Jones for their genuine welcoming spirit and their leadership in supporting our vision to invest in this incredible angling community.”

“The marine trades are an important part of North Carolina’s heritage,” said North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “It’s great to see a company with the leadership and reputation of White River Marine choose our state for this important expansion of their company.”

The regional economy will benefit from a more than $22 million payroll impact each and every year.

North Carolina Sugar White River Marine Group’s project in North Carolina will be facilitated by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee earlier today. Over the course of the 12-year term of this grant, the project is estimated to grow the state’s economy by $1.17 billion. Using a formula that takes into account the new tax revenues generated by the new jobs, the JDIG agreement authorizes the potential reimbursement to the company of up to $5,441,400, spread over 12 years. State payments only occur following performance verification by the departments of Commerce and Revenue that the company has met its incremental job creation and investment targets. JDIG projects result in positive net tax revenue to the state treasury, even after taking into consideration the grant’s reimbursement payments to a given company.

White River Marine’s JDIG agreement could also move as much as $604,600 into a fund that helps rural communities across the state attract business in the future. When companies select a site located in a Tier 2 county such as Craven, their JDIG agreements move some of the new tax revenue into the state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account. Local communities in more economically challenged areas of the state use grants from the Utility Account to build public infrastructure projects, which can improve a community’s ability to attract companies to their regions.

“It’s great to see the next chapter open for this important manufacturing site in our region,” said N.C. Representative Steve Tyson. “White River Marine Group is the number one company in their industry, and we welcome the new jobs and investment they’re bringing to New Bern and Craven County.”

“Great economic development announcements don’t happen by themselves,” said N.C. Senator Norman Sanderson. “I’m proud of the many community partners that worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help us reach this achievement. All of us will continue to support the company as they put down roots and grow here.”

Partnering with the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. on this project were the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Community College System, the North Carolina Department of Revenue, Craven County, the Craven 100 Alliance, North Carolina’s Southeast, and the Craven County Economic Development Department.

Everything Hatteras from Sportfish to Motor Yacht

Designed to be the ultimate escape from the drudgery of life on land, Hatteras yachts pile on amenities such as generous windows and skylights, sweeping staircases, expansive decks with swim platforms. Whether you are looking for a Hatteras Sportfish or Motor Yacht we have the yacht for you. Take this moment to find your next yacht.

The Hatteras Yachts story began in 1959 in New Bern, North Carolina, when founder and marlin fisherman Willis Slane envisioned a fishing vessel that could withstand the unforgiving waters off Cape Hatteras. Just one year later, during an era when the wooden boat was still king, the company introduced the Hatteras 41 Convertible, the first all-fiberglass sportfishing boat available in the 40-foot range. What followed was innovation upon innovation and a remarkable legacy of superior craftsmanship, engineering, and attention to detail that remain the brand’s hallmarks 60 years later. Even the smallest of Hatteras Yachts’ sportfishing boats offer amenities often reserved for luxury yachts. From their helms outfitted with state-of-the-art electronics to their deceptively spacious, bright interiors, the GT, convertible, yacht fisherman, and flybridge models serve up plenty of room to wage war on your choice of catch while entertaining friends and fellow anglers. Outriggers, rod holders, outdoor grills, plenty of storage, and spacious lounge areas are available up top, while well-equipped galleys and comfortable accommodations populate below-deck areas.
