Yacht Prices
When it comes to buying a luxury yacht, there’s a lot to know about yacht pricing. Here at Worth Avenue Yachts, our team of brokers will help you with everything you need to know, but here’s a general yacht pricing guide to get you started on your yacht-buying journey.
Luxury yacht prices, like the yachts themselves, differ enormously. According to 2014 sales data , the average yacht price for a second-hand yacht for sale is €7.9 million ($8.4 million), but prices of super yachts can start at around $1.5 million for a small or older yacht and rise to a $600 million, which is how much Azzam, the largest yacht in the world at 590 feet cost to build.
The size of the yacht and age of the yacht are the obvious starting points for yacht pricing, but many other factors also come into account. The yacht builder, or ‘brand’, can have an extraordinary impact on the asking price- for example, a 200 foot yacht from two different yacht builders can easily see a difference in pricing of around 20 million dollars. Yacht brands also differ in how they hold their value or depreciate relatively rapidly- this is where the wide industry knowledge of your yacht broker will be of enormous value to you when considering what the resale value should be.
Also affecting price is whether something is completely custom-built, semi-custom, or chosen from an existing identical range. As the global fleet of superyachts is growing rapidly, with over 10,000 yachts afloat today, there are increasingly good deals to be found on second-hand yachts as existing yacht owners upgrade. You’ll also often find sharp reductions in second-hand yacht pricing announced in the lead-up to yacht shows, making these yachting events a great time to shop around, view lots of different boats and get a good deal.
In the US, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the largest event of this kind, while the Monaco Yacht Show is the flagship yacht show of the Mediterranean. There are many other yacht shows around the world; see our events page for details. Yacht pricing is also affected by global economic fortunes: the yachting industry is now rebounding after the financial crisis but there are still some excellent bargains out there.
The yacht designer’s name- exterior and interior- also affects yacht pricing tremendously: yachts by certain designers such as Bannenberg & Rowell and Espen Oeino will generally attract much higher prices than lesser-known designers. The yacht’s history will also affect resale value accordingly- yachts which have been well-maintained and lightly used will obviously hold a higher second-hand value. The range of the yacht (i.e., how big its fuel tanks are so the distance it can travel) also affects pricing, as does the brand of machinery, electronics and AV systems the yacht carries.
A yacht’s flag registry and tax status will also affect yacht pricing- some yachts will be advertised as ‘tax paid’, representing a good deal for some. Additionally, there are some tax restrictions affecting yacht purchases in certain countries. For instance, in the US a bill has just been introduced to end the prohibitive import taxation on US buyers buying foreign-flagged yachts located in US waters, and that will be watched with interest as it will positively influence yacht pricing for US buyers if it passes.
As you can see, many factors can influence yacht pricing, and it is constantly in flux due to economic and legislative factors. Your yacht broker is up-to-date with industry knowledge and where to find the good deals, so get in touch with a yacht broker at Worth Avenue Yachts to find out more about yacht pricing, alternatively fill in this contact form and we will be in contact shortly.

Which Superyacht is Right for You?
The type of superyachts best suited for you depends on the on-water experience you want. You may want power and speed, ensuring a motor-powered superyacht is right for you. Alternatively, you may want to feel the wind pushing you across the water, so a sailing yacht is best suited for your needs. In either respect, the most popular superyachts feature incredible amenities, top performance and exceptional design that allows them to retain their value for resale or charter.
When choosing the ideal superyacht, you – with the help of your broker – will weigh various options and features, including style, type of yacht, build pedigree, crew layout, facilities, décor and more. Whether you are looking for a large, modern motor yacht or a classically styled gentlemen’s yacht, Northrop & Johnson has a wide selection of superyacht types available for sale.
When buying or building a yacht, remember: first and foremost, your yacht is for you and your family or friends to use. What type of experience and use are you looking for in your ownership? Are you interested in a new or used yacht? Custom built or semi-custom? How are you planning to use your yacht? If you are planning to charter your yacht to help offset some of the running costs, then factor in the charterer, but remember, a yacht is very personal and you must consider your own needs as a priority.
Types of Superyachts
The type of yacht will shape the experience for the owner. The most popular superyachts (be they sail or motor) have a combination of elements that make them strong across the board both during ownership and in resale value and charter success. From the style and type of yacht and the build pedigree to the crew layout, the facilities and even the décor, there are many factors that, when combined, influence the enjoyment of yacht ownership. Whether you are looking for a large, modern motor yacht or a classically styled gentlemen’s yacht, Northrop & Johnson has a wide selection of superyacht types available for sale. When buying or building a yacht, remember that first and foremost your yacht is for you and your family or friends to use. What type of experience and use are you looking for in your ownership? Delivered in 2018 by the Rossinavi shipyard, the UTOPIA IV yacht is a harmonious balance of luxurious superyacht and high-performance sport yacht. Fitted with four MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines that provide power to four Rolls Royce hydro jets, motor yacht UTOPIA IV effortlessly glides through the water with a cruising speed of 20 knots while achieving impressive top speeds. Considering her size, this performance is quite remarkable.
With an exterior featuring coupe-like design cues of long handsome lines coupled with a slender silhouette characteristic of Rossinavi yachts, her interior is sleek and wide and can sleep 12 guests across six spacious suites. The tastefully appointed interior blends minimalism with sophisticated European taste sourced from haute couture brands Hermes and Armani. The forward-facing owner’s suite has a commanding view provided by floor-to-ceiling windows and features a grand bathroom with a double shower and jacuzzi. The master suite of this 63-meter Rossinavi superyacht also contains a sitting room, office, and private balcony.
A notable feature of the UTOPIA IV yacht is her impressive stern beach club. The transom folds down to add 754 square feet of swim platform to the bar and relaxation area inside the vessel. Light filters down above the bar from the ceiling through the glass-bottom pool on the main deck above.
In 2019, the Rossinavi UTOPIA IV yacht was the winner of the World Superyachts Award “2019 Semi-Displacement or Planing Motor Yachts – 40m and above” and the winner of the International Superyacht Society Awards of “2019 Best Power 40m – 65m.”
UTOPIA IV underwent a major refit in 2022 which included a full paint job, completion of her 5-year survey, and service of all major machinery including engines, jet drives, and generators. She represents an incredible opportunity to own a world-class, late-model Rossinavi pedigree sport yacht without waiting several years for the delivery of a new vessel. The UTOPIA IV yacht is U.S. duty paid and viewings can be arranged by qualified clients by appointment.

How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.
SELECT SIZE ⇩
Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.
How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.
40 Foot Yacht Cost
A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.
Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.
A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.
The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.
The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.
Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.
Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.
You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.
For sailboat prices specifically, check out this article .
Our Pick: Viking 42 Convertible: Cruise and Fish (2014)
Price: $895,000
- Cushioned seats
- Underwater lights
- Flybridge fiberglass hard-top
- Recent engine and service
- Joystick control
- Cockpit shade with poles, freezer, and step-up box
- Custom chairs
- Coach roof overhang to provide shade
- home theater setup
- Freshwater wash area
- Cockpit freezer and drink box
- Forward-facing viewing windows in deckhouse
Here’s a great example of a yacht with differing ages and year models. It has twin diesel engines, 600 hp each, and cruise at 35 mph (pretty fast!).
Yacht Price Examples for Three Other 40-50 Foot
- 42-foot Grand Banks 42 Classic; trawler-cruiser style yacht; twin diesel, 350 hp each, cruising speed is 13 mph. Price: $370,000 for 2004; $124,500 for 1986; older ones for less
- 45-foot Sea Ray 450 Sundancer or Sedan Bridge; single or twin diesel, about 1,000 hp total; cruising speed about 26 mph Price: $472,000 for 2012 twin-engine
- 41-foot Back Cove Downeast; single diesel 715 hp; cruising speed is 26 mph Price: $619,000 for 2016
50 Foot Yacht Cost
50-foot yachts are normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.
They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.
The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.
Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.
Our Pick: Hatteras GT54 Convertible Sportfish
The price for the 2017 model of this used yacht starts at $2,249,000.
This yacht is 53′ 10″ long and weighs 75,000 pounds! It has twin diesel engines, 1,300 hp each, cruising speed of 35 mph.
It has a 1200-gallon fuel capacity with three staterooms. It sleeps up to 6 people, so it is perfect for entertaining without being so large to the point where maintenance becomes very difficult. It is known for its great propulsion rates and is very smooth and agile.
It specializes as a fishing boat but allows plenty of room for guests. In addition to the three staterooms, it has a large salon deck, a spacious galley, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.
Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 50 Foot
- 51-foot Azimut Magellano 50; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 425 hp each, cruising speed 16 mph Price: $670,760 for 2013
- 52-foot Carver C52 Command Bridge; twin diesel engines, 600 hp each; cruising speed 18- 26 mph Price: $1,149,000 for 2017; $1,750,00 for 2021 with bow thrusters, gyro-stabilizer
How much is a large yacht? Let’s step up to 60 foot.
60 Foot Yacht Cost
Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.
This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.
If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.
This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.
Here are some examples:
Our Pick: Hatteras M60
The average base price for this model is around $2,995,000.
The Hatteras M60 is great for someone who wants the luxury of a larger yacht but still wants to be an owner-operator. The deck’s layout below and above is spacious, with a large salon and a full master suite. It can be customized to order with hardwood floors or specific carpeting and amenities like TVs, a bar, a full kitchen, etc. It is a motor yacht, meant for pleasure cruising.
It has twin diesel engines, 1135 hp each; cruising speed is 28 mph.
Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 60 Foot
- 64-foot Schaefer 640; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 625 hp each; cruising speed 25 mph Price: $1,299,000 for 2017
- 60-foot Sunreef 62 Sailing Catamaran; twin diesel engines 110 hp each; cruising speed 10 mph Price: $990,000 for 2009
70 Foot Yacht Cost
We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.
This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!
As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.
When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.
With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.
Here are some great options for this size:
Our Pick: Hatteras GT70 Convertible Sportfish
The 2017 GT70 model runs around $4,500,000, but keep in mind the extra costs of maintenance, furnishing, and a cabin crew to help it run. It’s great for a long vacation and far-away destinations.
The GT70 convertible sportfish is known for its speed and agility, and high propulsion power. It has twin diesel engines, 1900 hp each; cruising speed over 30 mph.
It is 70′ 6″ with 2,140-gallon fuel capacity. The inside is lavish, with a galley, a huge salon, and five staterooms.
Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 70 Foot
- 75-foot Hatteras Motor Yacht; sport cruiser; twin diesel, 1800 hp each; cruising speed 28 mph. Price: $4,375,000 for 2017
- 74-foot Ocean Alexander Motoryacht; twin diesel, 1150 hp each; cruising speed 24 mph. Price: $1,895,000 for 2011
100 Foot Yacht Costs (and up):
You are officially in the superyacht range.
These yachts come in all styles and shapes, allowing for cruising along coastlines or focusing on watercraft and speed boating.
Since this is likely the peak size boat for practical use, you can expect a lot of additional costs for hiring a crew, maintenance, docking, as well as stocking your boat full of amenities.
You’re likely to spend the bulk of your costs furnishing this size boat as bigger yachts typically are sold without furniture. The previous owner will want to hold on to designer furniture and other expensive interior.
Check out these great examples of 100-foot yachts .
Our Pick: 143′ 04″ Virtus 44
This model cost around $20,189,000.
This mega yacht is anyone’s dream.
It is home to a fully integrated beach club with room for a pool deck, floor-to-ceiling windows in the main salon, a hot tub on the top deck, five staterooms, an 8-person crew, and room to sleep ten guests.
It has room for water toys and other gadgets, with a layout that keeps them purposefully hidden from the outside world. It has a 12-knot cruising speed and 16-knot max speed,
Other 100+ Feet Yachts Price Examples
- 98′ 5″ AB 100 Price: $8,843,260 for 2018
- 161′ 04″ Acico Nassima Price: $17,933,000 for 2012
How Much is Yacht Insurance?
Insurance on a yacht is around 1% of the purchase price per year. It can go higher if you have lots of expensive designer furniture. This can add up over the years. It’s often cheaper to insure a sailing yacht but the price range is still within the 0.7-1.3%.
What Other Expenses Do Yacht Owners Face?
Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.
How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?
A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.
The world’s largest private vessel belongs to the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Azzam. It is 590 feet long and costs $600 million to build!
It is outliers like these that increase the price average for yacht owners, perhaps scaring potential owners when they start their research.
As a luxury yacht price guide, however, we need to look at averages.
Currently, the average superyacht costs $275 million. This does not even account for maintenance costs, either.
Superyachts are large and luxurious, needing a professional crew to help them run. They are designed to emphasize comfort, speed, and longer expeditions – depending on the yacht builders.
They might have:
- swimming pools,
- water toys,
- diving and fishing poles,
- fully furnished rooms,
- helicopter landing pads,
- and smaller support vessels
Just to name a few amenities. They are truly the epitome of the elite.
What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?
The normal yacht length starts at around 23 feet, and can extend hundreds of feet. If the boat meets 23 feet, it can be considered a yacht.
A boat does not need luxury features to be considered a yacht.
It can be minimal and stripped of the “extra” stuff to fall into the yacht category, so long as it meets the size and length criteria.
11 Things to Consider Before You Purchase
When making this purchase, the yacht size you buy needs to reflect what you hope to get out of the vessel.
Some important questions to ask yourself before you buy are:
- What does your perfect day on the water look like?
- How long will your average day on the water be?
- Will it be more boating/watercraft focused or long cruise focused?
- Will you use the yacht for fishing?
- Will you be on the yacht every day of the week or just on weekends?
- How many people do you hope to fit on the yacht?
- Do you plan to stay on the yacht overnight?
- Where will you dock the yacht?
- How much boating experience do you have?
- How fast do you want the yacht to go?
- How important is it to have extra amenities like furnished rooms, water toys, electronics, etc.?
These questions will guide you to understand the size you really need and will be able to realistically maintain versus what your most ideal yacht would look like.
When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?
At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew.
A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.
Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.
If you don’t know much about boats and navigation, you will need more help to use your vessel.
Hopefully, this comprehensive guide gives you a good starting point as you begin your yacht price research process.
Important Things to Consider As Well
Although there are many factors to consider when understanding a yacht’s prices, it is an exciting purchase nonetheless and should be enjoyed as much as possible.
At the end of your research, you’ll be the owner of a beautiful yacht you can use for leisure, cruising, sports craft, fishing, or all of the above.
Although this article is a good starting point, we would also recommend getting in touch with a yacht broker who can help you find your best fit , model, year, and the price is given your personal budget.
They are great sources of knowledge in addition to personal research.
Make sure you are as patient as possible in this process to make sure you are covering all your bases, but most importantly, enjoy the process!
Here’s How Much Yachts Cost on Average:
Yachts start around $300,000 for smaller 40-foot models and can go as high as several hundred million dollars for superyachts.
These are the main contributing factors to the price of a yacht:
- The size of the yacht
- The age of the yacht
- The brand and type of yacht
In general, the larger the yacht is, the more important the quality of the build becomes.
Also, potential owners need to understand the cruising speed and propulsion of different yachts.
The yacht type is also broken down into two categories:
- Mediterranean Style Open style expresses yacht with maximum space for sun, little-to-no shade on the deck.
- Hard-top express Semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space on deck for the operator
- Flybridge yachts
An express yacht is often referred to interchangeably as an express cruiser or sports cruiser .
It has a single deck above the hull with a living space below.
They are much sleeker, too.
A flybridge yacht is often referred to as a sedan bridge or sport bridge, and it is typically used for fishing. It has additional space above the main deck.
Since the flybridge area has more space on the second deck, the main deck is normally made up of enclosed spaces and rooms.
It can have an open-air layout but can also have a hard-top.

Test / X-Yacht 4° price list, a list of options to customize your yacht
The X-Yachts 4° is a powerful cruiser. Via the very complete option list, it is possible to configure it as a very comfortable cruiser for cruising or to opt for regatta type options to go play between 3 buoys.
A standard price already very complete
With some of its standard equipment: large hull windows, forward sail compartment, self-steering jib, luxurious woodwork, 200-litre fuel tank or the complete navigation package, including even hot water, included in the standard basic price of 257,500 euros excluding VAT, you can enjoy an excellent cruiser, very fast and meticulously manufactured.
Comfort options
To make it ultra comfortable, you'll have to choose from a nice list of options dedicated to ease of manoeuvring and relaxation on board, such as a furling boom, electric winches or the pivoting transom. A complete boat can cost around 450,000 euros excluding VAT.
Options for the regatta
But if the race demon catches up with you, you can take advantage of the basic equipment: a high-performance hull and hull stiffness, a lead keel bulb, a Rod rig, a folding propeller and an ergonomic deck plan. Then, it's up to you to sharpen it by drawing on the top-of-the-range technical equipment selected by the yard: Axxon carbon masts and booms, winches and genoa sheet rail, code 0 rigging as well as sails and sophisticated electronics.
By taking care to keep some others away such as teak decks, the 40 HP engine or the rear platform to avoid some undesirable kilos when racing. Thus equipped you will no longer be far from an ocean racer as long as you take the move with 3 cabins. It will cost you approximately the same amount as for a cruise configuration.
Unless you have a versatile solution between cruising and regattas to attract your friends to the courses on the weekends, while satisfying your lady for the holidays.
What about the competition?
In price ranges and of similar construction quality, the Grand Soleil 39 offers a peak bed and a second bathroom in the forward cabin, but does not offer a sail hold. The Dehler 38 a little cheaper, is doing well with a clever layout and a very nice finish, but is slightly less voluminous. Just like the Italia 11.98 whose cursor tilts to the side of the banana courses, is definitely more sporty and less accommodating. Finally, the Solaris 37, which is a real 38', has an even higher quality finish at an even higher price, but remains more cruising style.

Inflation data from CPI report shows sharper price gains: What it means for Fed rate cuts.
Rising gasoline costs kept inflation elevated in February, underscoring that the road to more modest consumer price increases following a pandemic-induced spike may continue to be bumpy.
The climb in fuel costs and rent offset flat food prices.
Overall prices rose 3.2% from a year earlier, slightly up from 3.1% in January, according to the Labor Department’s consumer price index. On a monthly basis, costs increased 0.4% following a 0.3% gain the previous month.
What is the core inflation rate right now?
Core prices, which exclude volatile food and energy items and are watched more closely by the Federal Reserve, increased 0.4% after a similar rise in January. That still lowered the annual increase from 3.9% to 3.8%, the smallest since May 2021.

Are inflation rates going down?
Since hitting a 40-year high of 9.1% in June 2022, inflation has slowed substantially. But after swift progress in the fall, price increases have become more volatile.
Many goods, such as used cars, furniture and appliances, have gotten cheaper in the past year as pandemic-related supply chain snags have resolved. But the cost of services, such as rent, car insurance and transportation keep advancing, in part, because of sharply rising employee wages.
By the end of the year, Barclays expects overall inflation to slow modestly to 2.9% while the core reading drifts down to 3.1% – both still notably above the Fed’s 2% goal.
Will the Fed lower interest rates in 2024?
Fed Chair Jerome Powell told Congress last week that the central bank will likely trim its key interest rate this year but not until officials see more evidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward the Fed’s target. Since March 2022, the Fed has hiked its benchmark short-term rate from near zero to a 22-year high of 5% to 5.25% to corral inflation, though officials have paused since July.
In the past couple of months, futures markets have pushed out their forecast for the first Fed rate decrease from March to June and are now predicting four rate cuts this year, down from six.
Tuesday's index report could prompt Fed officials to wait a bit longer, depending on inflation's course over the next few months.
"While we thought a May rate cut was on the table, it is increasingly likely that the (Fed) waits at least until June" before starting to lower rates, says Nationwide Chief Economist Kathy Bostjancic.
'I haven't seen it get any better'
Pat Baldwin, of Detroit, says she and her husband will fork over $418 for two round-trip train tickets to Chicago during the Thanksgiving holiday this year, more than double the pre-pandemic price tag.
“It’s like astronomical,” says Baldwin, who is in her late 50s.
They’ll still take the trip, which will coincide with her husband’s birthday. But to offset the cost, they’ll forgo their traditional Christmas train ride to a small Michigan town.
While many Americans have notched big raises in recent years, finally helping them keep up with inflation, Baldwin says her pay has gone up every other year and lagged inflation.
“I haven’t seen it get any better,” says Baldwin, a program director for a foundation that develops classes and other activities for seniors.
Baldwin says she regularly makes trade-offs. Instead of buying hamburger or chicken at the grocery store, she waits until a protein is on sale and then stocks her refrigerator. Last fall, she had her eye on a $99 pair of dress shoes online but bided her time until they were discounted to $39 and then bought four pairs.
To save electricity, she now washes the couple's clothes every three weeks instead of weekly and sometimes substitutes candles for lights.
Why are gas prices climbing again?
Gasoline prices rose 3.8% in February after four straight monthly declines. As spring draws closer, demand is rising and producers are switching to more expensive summer blends.
Will food prices go down in 2024?
Grocery prices were unchanged, lowering the annual increase to just 1% – the smallest since June 2021 – and providing consumers some relief from hefty price gains experienced over much of the past two years. The cost of commodities such as wheat, corn and soybeans generally have come down amid increased global production.
But the picture was mixed last month. Bread prices edged down 0.5%, pork fell 0.8% and chicken declined 1.3%.
But egg prices leaped 5.8% amid another avian flu outbreak, breakfast cereal rose 2%, and fish was up 0.4%.
Some good news: Restaurant bills inched up just 0.1% after a flurry of sharper increases tied to big employee wage hikes in response to labor shortages.
Why is rent so high in the US right now?
Rent remains the biggest contributor to inflation, rising 0.5% in February after several smaller gains. That nudged down the annual rise to a still elevated 5.8% from 6.5%. Economists expect rent increases to moderate, based on new leases, but that has filtered through to existing leases far more gradually than anticipated.
The price of some other services also kept climbing in February. Airline fares jumped 3.6%. Car insurance rose nearly 1% and is up 20.6% over the past year. And car repair costs increased 0.4%.
And while goods prices generally have been softening, some costs rose unexpectedly last month. Used car prices increased by 0.5% and apparel, by 0.6%. Other products continued their descent amid improved supply chains, with furniture and bedding prices slipping 0.7% and appliances sliding 0.9%.
Among voters, Democrats are more upbeat about the economy
Inflation has been a major worry for many Americans, but a growing number have recently begun to feel more positive about the economy according to a poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College.
The survey, taken in late February, found 26% of registered voters nationwide felt the economy was good or excellent, a six percentage point jump from July. The increased optimism was most common among older Democrats.
President Joe Biden still faces significant backlash over inflation from voters, and a slower-than-anticipated return to normal price increases could hurt his reelection chances.
In a statement after the release of Tuesday's index report, Biden said, "Inflation is down two-thirds from its peak and annual core inflation is the lowest since May 2021. Wages are rising faster than prices over the last year and since the pandemic."
However, he added, "As I said in my State of the Union, we have more to do to lower costs and give the middle class a fair shot." He said the federal budget he proposed Monday would address inflation by lowering prescription drug costs and rent, among other measures.
Biden’s top economic adviser said the question of affordability will be a top priority for the president.
“It is going to center on health care. It's going to center on housing. If you look in terms of the sources of affordability challenges, health care and housing are two of the biggest," Lael Brainard, director of the National Economic Council, told USA TODAY on Tuesday. "Of course, the president also is going to continue focusing on inflation at the grocery store where actually we saw prices being flat over the month.”
It's unclear how much Biden will benefit at the ballot box from improved inflation numbers. For example, although grocery prices overall have risen modestly in the past year, voters want lower prices at stores, says Gabriel Mathy, an economic professor at American University.
"As Trump was president in a period of low inflation before the pandemic, voters may feel some nostalgia for the prices we saw when he was president," Mathy added.
And most voters' perceptions of the economy are influenced more by their partisan leanings than objective economic data, says Todd Belt, director of the political management program at George Washington University.
But Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics, says Biden's argument for reelection will strengthen among independent voters if inflation numbers continue to improve in coming months.

11 charts that show how covid changed the U.S. economy
After a pandemic-fueled roller coaster, the U.S. economy is finally steadying.
Four years ago this week, the first wave of what would grow to be 20 million job losses set in, although most Americans were more terrified of catching a new, very transmissible, and sometimes fatal, virus. Toilet paper was nowhere to be found, but at least it was cheaper than it is now, along with most groceries.
In the months to follow, the pandemic recession was largely recognized by global and political leaders as a severe economic trauma. And the swift and almost miraculous recovery of the U.S. economy has been the envy of the world .
The one lasting challenge for the U.S. economy that permeates nearly every benchmark of economic health is inflation. Price increases are finally easing, but not before taking a toll on all Americans, shaping how they feel about everything.
A new normal has settled into the U.S. economy — one that nobody could have predicted four years ago. Here’s what it looks like now, in 11 charts.
1. Unemployment
The labor market imploded as layoffs spiked at the beginning of the pandemic, fueling sky-high unemployment, as many businesses closed or dramatically slowed operations.
In the years that followed, the labor market defied expectations with a vigorous recovery, thanks in large part to consumers opening up their wallets in different ways. The economy added 275,000 jobs last month — extending the longest stretch of an unemployment rate below 4 percent since the 1960s. Still, not all industries have been affected equally. While the health-care industry has steadily grown over the past four years, to accommodate those who got sick during the pandemic and also the growing aging population, the tech industry has shed tens of thousands of workers, after overstaffing to accommodate users flocking online in 2020.
The unemployment rate is expected to climb slightly in 2024 as high interest rates slow business expansion. But data shows that employers are staying committed to investing in their workforces, especially as the Federal Reserve is expected to lower rates, which makes business loans cheaper.
Many Americans got large pay increases after the pandemic, when employers were having to one-up each other to find and keep workers. For a while, those wage gains were wiped out by decade-high inflation: Workers were getting larger paychecks, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with rising prices.
That’s starting to change, as worker shortages are no longer plaguing employers and the costs of running a business settle down. Wage growth is outpacing inflation again, which means workers are back to seeing steady gains in their spending power.
With sudden lockdowns forcing Americans to cancel plans and stay home, families were able to save an eye-popping 32 percent of their incomes in April 2020, an all-time high.
More savings spikes followed, as government stimulus checks and enhanced unemployment benefits made their way into bank accounts. But as the world reopened — and people resumed spending on dining out, travel, concerts and other things that were previously off-limits — savings rates have leveled off. Americans are also increasingly dip into rainy-day funds to pay more for necessities, including groceries, housing, education and health care. In fact, Americans are now generally saving less of their incomes than they were before the pandemic.
4. Credit card debt
As Americans drastically pulled back on spending early in the pandemic, they relied less on loans and credit cards. A mix of stimulus money and other measures, like a pause on student loan repayments, helped keep indebtedness low for a while, even as the economy opened back up.
But now, debt loads are swinging higher again as families try to keep up with rising prices. Total household debt reached a record $17.5 trillion at the end of 2023, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. And, in a worrisome sign for the economy, delinquency rates on mortgages, car loans and credit cards are all rising, too.
5. Immigrant visas
When the pandemic hit, the State Department cut back on processing visas except in certain cases, such as those for emergency and “mission critical” situations, with more limited services starting again in July 2020.
That led to a precipitous drop in the number of immigrant visas approved during the early months of the pandemic. It took years, but the agency caught up to its previous rate — and said it reduced its overall backlog by 15 percent last year.
A lack of foreign-born workers in the United States hamstrung employers back in 2021 and 2022. But their return to the U.S. labor force, due to both legal and illegal immigration, helped propel economic growth in 2023 beyond expectations.
6. Groceries
Grocery prices began their ascent early in the pandemic, when supply chain disruptions and labor shortages collided with a sudden rise in demand, as Americans hunkered down at home.
Since then, a mix of factors, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, extreme weather related to climate change and a massive Avian flu outbreak, have kept costs elevated. Overall, grocery prices are up 25 percent from four years ago.
However, there’s good news: Those increases have started to level off. Rice, milk, meat and fruit have all gotten cheaper this year. Economists generally expect grocery inflation to keep cooling — which means prices will stabilize, though in a healthy economy they’re unlikely to drop back down to pre-pandemic levels.
7. Gas prices
Gas prices dipped during the beginning of the pandemic, as people stayed home and business operations slowed. But skyrocketing prices hit American’s wallets in 2022 — caused in part by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Prices have eased in recent months, due in part to increased oil production in North America. The United States is producing more oil than any country ever has.
“The global refining picture continues to improve, providing more capacity and peace of mind that record-setting prices will stay away from the pump in 2024,” wrote GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, in an annual fuel price report. Analysts don’t expect major spikes in gas prices this year, beyond expected seasonal waves.
8. Home prices
The pandemic set off a home-buying frenzy. Americans were stuck at home, hankering for more space — and had the extra cash to buy their first homes or upgrade to larger ones.
It also helped that rock-bottom interest rates made it cheap to borrow. The result was a stunning 48 percent surge in home prices that lifted the average U.S. sales price to over $552,000.
But lately, demand has cooled, thanks to a mix of high prices and rising borrowing costs, as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to curb inflation. That’s helped bring down average home prices by 11 percent from their 2022 peak.
Home builders are catching on that consumers want more affordable houses, driving a shift toward construction of smaller new homes with lower price tags.
9. New restaurant openings
Many restaurants were forced to close during the pandemic. Others shifted to takeout food and to-go cocktails but still had to cut staff. When things opened up again, diners rushed into restaurants but the industry took a while to get back on track, due to labor shortages and rising prices for everything.
Now, optimism has returned. Restaurant openings last year saw a nearly 2 percent bump over 2019, according to data from Yelp, which tracks restaurant openings by calculating new listings on its site. “In 2024, we expect to see this positive momentum continue,” said Cliff Cate, Yelp’s vice president and general manager, restaurants. And restaurants aren’t the only new businesses in town: For the first time since the onset of the pandemic, overall business openings last year in every U.S. state beat out pre-pandemic numbers, according to Yelp.
10. Air travel
Air travel plummeted during the early months of the pandemic, as people sheltered in place and borders closed around the world.
It rebounded faster than many expected as passengers exercised their pent-up demand to travel.
But the recovery came with challenges caused by staffing changes and industry shifts . When covid hit, airlines encouraged some staff to take early retirement or voluntary separation packages, leading to senior staff departures. That left airlines with less experienced staff, and sometimes a shortage of workers — issues that have led to delays for travelers and potential safety challenges, according to some industry leaders.
11. Consumer sentiment
Mass uncertainty early in the pandemic caused consumer sentiment to dip, as measured by the closely watched survey by the University of Michigan. Another drop in sentiment followed during peak inflation prices. But consumers are finally feeling better about the economy.
The number has been improving in part because of easing inflation rates. Consumers seem to feel that inflation will “continue on a favorable trajectory,” Joanne Hsu, an economist at the University of Michigan and director of its consumer surveys, wrote about the February consumer sentiment numbers.

Players Championship prize money payout: Here's how much money each golfer earned at TPC Sawgrass
Jared C. Tilton
Money, money, money. For better or worse, it’s the underlying subplot regarding the uncertain future of men’s professional golf. And if you pay attention to social media, for worse seems to be far outweighing for better these days. If there is a tipping point regarding how much golf fans care about how much tour pros are making in tournaments, it feels like that point has likely passed.
That said, you can’t ignore that this week at the 50th anniversary of the Players Championship, the 144 golfers in the field were playing for A LOT of money. It’s just a fact; the overall purse up for grabs at TPC Sawgrass was $25 million, the most of any event on the PGA Tour. And the prize money payout for the winner, Scottie Scheffler, was also a record amount, with $4.5 million going to the last man standing. Scheffler shot a final-round 64 to end at 20 under par and win in back-to-back weeks—following his Arnold Palmer Invitational win last Sunday—and for the first time in tournament history, back-to-back years, following his 2023 Players title. Brian Harman, Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark tied for second a shot back. Clark's birdie attempt on the 72nd hole was halfway in the hole, but rimmed out in dramatic fashion.
The prize money payout has grown substantially in a short period of time. As we have noted previously , when Rory McIlroy won the Players just five years ago, he claimed a then-record $2.25 million for his victory. But now a solo fifth place finish this week earns you $1.025 million.
Indulge us for our annual review of just how much the prize money has risen—again for better or worse—at this championship over the years. It's seems only appropriate to revisit given the golden anniversary being celebrated this year.

2024 Players Championship purse, prize money: Payout, Scottie Scheffler's winner's share from $25 million pool
Big stakes and big money were on the line this week at the pga tour's flagship event.
The 2024 Players Championship represents the biggest non-major tournament on the PGA Tour schedule, and as such, it appropriately offers the biggest purse. With an event of this magnitude, it is only right the payday matches the stakes as a total of $25 million will be up for grabs this week at TPC Sawgrass.
The largest prize pool of the season, the purse at the Players Championship also shelled out the largest winner's check of the young year: $4.5 million. It marks the second straight season that this structure will be in place, and Scottie Scheffler has claimed both winner's shares as he became the first golfer to go back-to-back at The Players Championship with a come-from-behind victory on Sunday.
In fact, Scheffler has collected $8.5 million for just 14 days of work over the last two weeks thanks to his $4 million winner's check from the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a signature PGA Tour event, last week. Certainly good work if you can get it.
Each of the top 35 finishers at The Players Championship collected six-figure sums with those inside the top 13 cashing more than $500,000 and those inside the top five clearing $1 million. While only Scheffler raised trophy at week's end, the Players champion was hardly be the only winner at the PGA Tour's flagship event.
Let's take a look at the payout list for the 2024 Players Championship for the top 65 players who make the weekend at TPC Sawgrass.
