• wpcf_mainimg_description: MARAE, pronounced Mar-eye 108' Pilothouse Sloop, "Best Sailing Yacht", International Superyacht Design Award, 2004 The name Marae has origins from the native Maori tribe in New Zealand meaning a special meeting place for family and friends. With Marae's New Zealand construction by Alloy Yachts, the name is a natural fit. This elegant yacht must be seen to fully appreciate her but in the interim the following description must suffice. On deck Marae has a private aft cockpit with collapsible spray hood and direct access to the master stateroom. This cockpit area is equipped with large cushions for lounging. A fold out stern section provides comfortable steps and a sturdy swim platform. Moving forward are the port and starboard steering stations, followed by a covered center cockpit with U-shaped sofas to port and starboard and hi-lo table for dinner or cocktails. These areas can be converted to lounging pads. Side windows slide open and a removable aft Isenglass curtain protects against the elements. A protected helm station is located to starboard. Captive winches keep the teak decks free of clutter. The interior woodwork on MARAE consists of stained walnut and is complemented by luxurious fabrics and crisp white linens, down duvets and down pillows in the staterooms. The upper saloon has a full wet bar with stools and a leather U-shaped sofa with coffee table that converts into a comfortable lounging area with panoramic views. Main saloon with comfortable sofas, coffee table and dining table seating six is located below, galley and crew areas are forward of the saloon and guest accommodations aft of the saloon. The master stateroom is full width aft with private access to the aft deck. Centerline queen size bed, office and en suite bath room. Roomy stall shower with built in seat. Private staircase from the master stateroom to the aft cockpit. Double guest cabin with en suite bath room, stall shower and built in shower seat. Twin guest cabin with Pullman berth and en suite bath room and stall shower. <p align="center">Go to Friendly MARAE Website: <a target="_blank" Luxury Sailing Yacht MARAE charter brief: MARAE (32.9m / 108’), formerly Paraiso, is a custom-built luxury sailing sloop, launched by the New Zealand based Shipyard Alloy Yachts back in 2004. Most recently refitted in 2009 and 2014, she is primarily an elegant sailing yacht with friendly and experienced crew, which offers both luxury accommodation as well as stylish family sailing holidays and adventurous holiday experience. Designed by Ted Fontaine Design Group she combines traditional, classic design with modern facilities, clean lines and open deck spaces with two cockpit areas. MARAE features all the latest sailing gear, communications and entertainment systems on board and is always kept in excellent, yacht charter ready condition. MARAE's super yacht crew of up to four are usually offering luxury crewed charter itineraries around the New England and Maine regions of USA throughout the summer and the East CARIBBEAN during the season in the winter months. Tip: Super yacht MARAE has a flexible draught which can go down from her usual 7.5m draft, she can raise it to only 2.15m. This raising centre board enables the yacht to access shallower anchorages which many other yachts in this range may have to avoid.

Sailing Yachts - MARAE

About Luxury Sailing Yacht MARAE: MARAE is a luxury sailing yacht offered for yacht charters in the Mediterranean during summer months and the East Caribbean in the winter yacht charter season. This very elegant super sail yacht must be seen to fully appreciate her, and in terms of yacht charter she is a great value. Having won the ‘’Best Sailing Yacht’’ award at the International Superyacht Design Award in 2004 as the best 108’ Pilothouse Sloop, this MCA and Lloyds registered boat is a genuinely unique yacht charter proposition in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. The name Marae, pronounced as ‘Mar-eye’, has origins in the native New Zealand Maori tribe and it means a special meeting place for family and friends. As Alloy Yachts are New Zealand based shipyard, the name is a genuinely natural fit. One of the best features of the yacht is a private aft cockpit on deck, which has a collapsible sprayhood, providing direct access to the master suite down below. The cockpit area is equipped with large cushions for lounging and it can also comfortably seat all guests for lovely al-fresco meals and panoramic views of the surrounding coastline during any of your super yacht charter cruises and whatever yacht charter itinerary is chosen. At the stern, a fold-out section provides comfortable steps and a useful swim platform for easy access to the water. Moving forward from the stern are the port and starboard steering stations, followed by one of MARAE's best features - a deck salon with a U-shaped sofa to port, an L-shaped one to starboard and hi-lo table for meals and cocktails. Side windows slide open and a removable aft Isenglass curtain protects against the elements. Very useful captive winches keep MARAE's sweeping teak decks free of clutter, while the protected helm station is located to starboard. In the interior of MARAE, stained walnut woodwork used throughout is complemented by luxurious fabrics and crisp white bed linens, Down duvets and Down pillows in the staterooms. The upper saloon has a full wet bar with stools and a leather U-shaped sofa surrounding a coffee table that converts into a comfortable lounging area. The views from here also great, thus the area is the best alternative to the outside areas on deck. The main saloon has richly upholstered sofas with deep cushions, a coffee table and dining table with seating for six. About super yacht crew on board of SY MARAE: Captain Frank Ficken is a US captain and has extensive sailing experience in the Caribbean as well as the Mediterranean. He is very easy going and particularly happy to allow clients to help sail MARAE whenever this is possible or when the clients are keen to switch from enjoying their luxury yacht charter experience for an adventurous sailing. His wife Sue is chef on board and as Frank, she also worked on board large yachts before joining Marael. She is very flexible in her cooking style and likes to create unique, imaginative meals to suit different clients on board. Her desserts are a treat and her provisioning experience in all major yacht charter ports, second to none. Dyland and Renee complet the crew of four on board of this yacht, and both are experienced first mate sailors/engineer (Dyland) and Stewardess (Renee) who are on board of luxury yachts for a number of years now.

Accommodation: Luxury Sailing Yacht MARAE can accommodate up to 6+1 guests in 3 luxuriously appointed cabins. The guests will have a total of 2 double cabin and 1 twin cabins. The master stateroom is located aft and across full width of the yacht, with private access to the aft deck. The suite features centreline queen-size bed, office and en suite bath room. The Surprise of His Life

 • By Kim Kavin
 • Updated: April 2, 2016

The box was wrapped in beautiful paper and waiting on the table when the father walked through the door. His wife and their adult children knew what was inside. They had kept it a secret for months. They gathered around, trying to hide their grins as they wished him a happy 60th birthday. The family held its collective breath as he opened the lid. A person they loved dearly was about to realize his lifelong dream.

The first thing the father saw was an 11-by-14 glossy photo. He picked it up and swooned over the lovely, traditional lines of the 108-foot Alloy Marae . Then he saw the Marae ball cap and polo shirt, both in his size. They were atop a bed of brochures for the cruising grounds in and around Newport, Rhode Island.

“You bought me a yacht?” he shrieked, turning wide-eyed to his wife while mentally calculating the family finances.

“He took a deep breath to realize we only chartered it for a couple of days, which was a much different financial investment,” she recalls with a laugh. “And then he started to look through everything, and he was so excited. He went right to the computer and started to look at Narragansett Bay, to understand whether he could get to Block Island, what would we do, where would we go. He spent the next five weeks making notes about everything, being very methodical about what he wanted to accomplish.”

Marae, at a lowest weekly base rate of $54,000 in New England, was a larger sailing yacht than she had planned for the family’s first-ever charter. But when she’d called Nicholson Yachts and told the broker that her husband stood 6-foot-5 — and that one son was 6-foot-4 while another was nearly 6-foot-10 — the broker advised skipping the smaller options.

And so the family found themselves walking up the dock the first night of their charter, trying to spot the yacht’s mast against the nighttime stars.

“The mast was illuminated in the dark sky. We originally thought it was a cell tower,” the wife says. “We had no idea the yacht was going to be as big as she was. We just could not believe how much space there was — and again, we’re talking about very big people.”

They didn’t even notice the weather. Capt. Frank Ficken had changed the pickup spot to the Hinckley facility in Portsmouth because winds in the 30s were blowing out of the north. Narragansett Bay already had gust-driven 2-footers rolling through the scenic anchorage off Goat Island in Newport. He wanted to ease the first-time sailors in slowly, until they could get used to being aboard.

The family didn’t realize that sleeping tied to the dock that night probably saved them a good deal of motion sickness. They instead were thrilled to cast off in the next morning’s daylight, when they could see everything happening all around them.

“The first morning, we weren’t sailing very fast, just moving along nicely, but the boat was pretty stable,” Ficken recalls. “We didn’t bury the rail or anything. We were probably doing 7 or 8 knots when we probably could’ve been doing 12 if we’d been with the owner. The next day, we put up a little more sail, then more the next day. At that point, we were sailing like they were lifelong sailors. They were driving the boat, we buried the rail — they had a blast.”

Ficken pointed the bow toward Block Island, which offered smaller crowds than Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket during the holiday weekend. When the family arrived, they rented bicycles. The wife had thought that seeing the island would be the best part of the trip.

“We were out there for about two hours, and we looked at each other and said, ‘What the hell are we doing this for?’” she recalls. “We turned around and went back to use the toys on the boat, the rafts, the paddleboards — we just wanted to be on the boat.”

Ficken remembers that same moment, only from the children’s point of view. He watched them as they watched their parents acting like teenagers, taking advantage of every water toy Marae carries.

“They couldn’t believe their mom was riding on the inflatable tube behind the tender,” Ficken says. “The sons were on the aft deck, watching and saying, ‘What are the odds that we would ever see mom doing that? One in a million?’ They couldn’t believe the fun she was having.”

The wife, being a first-time charterer, hadn’t asked for a birthday party for her husband. “I am not familiar with what goes on,” she says, “and I didn’t want to ask for any special acknowledgment.”

Nonetheless, chef Sue Ficken (Frank’s wife) and Marae’s crew arranged for balloons, happy birthday signs and, of course, a cake: Black Forest double-chocolate with imported black cherries, shaved chocolate and buttercream frosting.

“The presentation on the tabletop — I could go on for an hour,” the wife says. “We were transformed out of ourselves when we were on that boat. The five of us were someplace else.”

They enjoyed that feeling underway too, as they got comfortable with the motion of the yacht through the water. Experienced sailors can forget how it feels the first time you catch a good gust, look out toward the horizon and realize it’s just you, the yacht and the elements.

For this family, that moment was every bit as awe-inspiring as the husband and wife had always dreamed it would be.

“There’s a tactile experience of watching those sails unfurl, the light that comes through, the fresh air in your hair, the boat moving,” the wife says. “You feel so small against the grandeur of an unfurled sail. You’re looking up, and you just cannot believe you’re in the middle of this. If you’re not a person who is used to this, and this is new for you, you think, ‘I’ve done everything. I’ve gotten on jets. I’ve gone on cruises. I’ve been all over the world.’ You think nothing can really surprise you until you stand there and feel all that going on around you. There is nothing like it. I’ve had a very blessed life. I’ve had a lot of amazing experiences. Nothing can compare to the feeling of standing on that boat and sailing along.”

While the family’s finances don’t allow for this type of experience every year, she’s already saving to surprise her husband and family with another go. One day aboard, she heard the captain say in passing that Maine has a beautiful coastline.

The comment is stuck in her mind, she says, because one thing she learned as a first-time charterer is to trust the experts. Get the bigger yacht if your sons are tall. Trust that the crew will make your husband’s birthday amazing. Don’t dream of far-flung places when something stunning is waiting to be explored close to home.

“I figure, you only go around one time. We’re going to do it,” she says. “My kids are still talking about it, and my husband — it will always be etched in our hearts as one of the most extraordinary experiences of our lives.”

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

marae yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

marae yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

marae yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

marae yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

marae yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

marae yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

marae yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Hello! Thank you for your feedback! We are looking forward to visiting again!

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More

The luxurious atmosphere of this place, the view and the location make it quite outstanding. We had dinner here with friends and the dishes were amazing, accompanied by a chilled bottle of Chablis, it really made me feel as if it was a part of... the classic Russian movie. More
