Second Amels 80 Superyacht Sold and Under Construction

Dutch shipyard Amels revealed some exciting news over the extended Christmas period; the second 80m superyacht from its Limited Editions Amels 80 series has been sold and is now under construction. Highlighting a new generation of Amels superyachts, the second vessel from the popular new model is scheduled for delivery to her owner in 2026.

Combining sustainability with ‘sophisticated elegance’, the latest model from the esteemed Dutch shipyard is the epitome of forward-thinking yacht building. First revealed to the market in March 2022, the new and impressive Amels 80 line of superyachts features an eye-catching yet timeless exterior design from esteemed yacht designer Espen Øino; presenting both a ‘modern’ and ‘dynamic’ yacht. 

Each 80m vessel is equipped with a luxurious 200m2 sun deck, a waterside beach club which includes wellness and spa facilities, as well as a lavish dedicated owner's deck. Alongside its ability to carry a wide array of water toys and tenders and accommodate up to 14 guests and a crew of 21, each Amels 80 yacht is impressively fitted with Hybrid by Amels technology, allowing it to cruise silently, comfortably and sustainably at speeds of up to seven knots on electric propulsion. 

As the second superyacht sold from the largest Limited Editions series to date, the Amels 8002 will feature a custom interior design by American design studio JQB Design. Renowned for its work on the interiors of Lurssen Yachts’ iconic 126m OCTOPUS alongside several other award-winning superyachts, the American studio prides itself on creating one-of-a-kind private marine retreats and is aiming to deliver a completely unique vision to this new Amels build. Aside from the work done by Øino, JQB will also contribute to aspects of the yacht's exterior.

As with all Limited Editions superyachts and in line with the established Amels build concept, the Amels 8002 has already begun construction at the Dutch shipyard, on track for its 2026 delivery date. The build of the first Amels 80 , Amels 8001, is also well underway and she is expected for delivery to her owner in Spring 2025.

Best Amels Yachts for Sale

Founded in 1918, the Amels shipyard has become one of the most successful large yacht builders in the world. Amels builds are among some of the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. Part of the Damen Group of shipbuilding companies, the shipyard is based in the Dutch town of Vlissingen, the third busiest port in Holland. The island town is known for its shipbuilding and has launched all manner of vessels from naval ships to submarines and transatlantic liners.

Drawing on the town’s heritage and skilled artisans from the area, Amels reputation for flawless quality is down to the highly-skilled team of experts in design, engineering and the highest caliber of craftsmen. Amels is a Dutch shipbuilding brand of true excellence and will continue to succeed, pushing the boundaries of greatness.

Amels Heritage

Amels was first established as a family boat-building business by founder Kees Amels. Located in a small yard in Makkum, northern Holland, the Amels yard went on to deliver around 100 vessels during the first half of the 20thcentury, specializing in wooden fishing boats and steel tugboats up to 65 feet (20m) in length. The second half of the 20thcentury saw Kees son, Wiebe Amels, move the yard with the view to building larger commercial vessels and coasters. The yard, which was located on the outside of the Ijssellake-dike on the Makkumerwaard, went on to become one of Holland’s largest shipyards. Seeing the private yacht sector taking shape during the late 1970s, Wiebe went on to diversify Amels’ shipbuilding skills to specialize in the build of high-value luxury yachts. In 1982 Amels launched the 158-foot (48m) motor yacht KATALINA, and the next decade saw several notable luxury yachts coming from the Amels yard.

In 1991, the Damen Shipyards Group purchased Amels, bringing the brand into its portfolio and keeping the name that had by then become synonymous with luxury yacht building. The shipyard remained in Makkum for the next 14 years, before moving to its current operating yard in Vlissingen at the Royal Schelde yard, which is now the largest yacht-building facility in Holland. From its two shipyards in Vlissingen, Amel’s offers both ship-building and refit services. In conjunction with Damen, Amels also builds yacht support vessels. The two shipyards include extensive, climate-controlled covered dry docks capable of housing yachts up to 650 feet (200m).

To Date, Amels has Delivered More Than 60 Superyachts, Including Many Ground-Breaking Designs

The Amels Superyacht Fleet

To date, Amels has delivered more than 60 superyachts, including many ground-breaking designs. Amels offers both fully custom-built yachts and semi-custom builds. In 2005, they introduced the Amels semi-custom “Limited Edition” series of superyachts to satisfy the needs of clients looking for high quality builds with a short delivery time. “Although they may be built on a platform, the client is involved in the design elements from the very beginning of the build so that each and every build has its own unique identity,” says Northrop & Johnson broker Joe Foggia. The Amels 220 and Amels 242 are the most successful of the Limited Edition models.

Amels largest yacht to date is the 272-foot (83m) HERE COMES THE SUN, designed by Tim Heywood with interior design by Andrew Winch, which launched in 2016. The 188-foot (57.7m) VOLPINI 2, the first Amels 188 from the Limited Edition range, is the world’s first Tier III-compliant new build and the first yacht with Amels Hybrid Power in the Amels Limited Edition range. Designed by Tim Heywood with an interior by Reymond Langton, VOLPINI 2 was delivered to a repeat client in 2018. Launched in 2018, the 180-foot (55m) HALO is a beautiful showcase of the advantages that Amel’s Limited Edition offering brings with a smooth, short delivery and her superb design by Tim Heywood with an interior by Laura Sessa. The 204-foot (62.4m) Amels Limited Edition SEA & US, designed by Tim Heywood with interior design by Andrew Winch, is the latest successful launch from the yard’s Limited Edition 199 range. Burgess sells the first Amels 80.

During the Monaco Yacht Show 2022, Damen Yachting confirmed the sale of the first Amels 80, with Burgess representing the buyer. This all-new 80m (261ft) Amels Limited Editions is scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Burgess represented the new owner in the purchase of this brand new Amels design, which was unveiled to the industry earlier this year. ‘We are delighted to have worked as a team here at Burgess to provide our client with a seamless experience,’ says Sales Broker Kevin Kramer.

‘After sourcing the right new build, the team has now been instructed to provide technical services and act as the project manager for the entire build process. I know our Technical Services team is delighted to be working with Amels, Espen Øino and Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design again.’

The newly formed New Build Sales team draws on the talent and experience found across Burgess’ 360 offering, in this instance the Technical Services and Brokerage teams. Ed Beckett of New Build Sales was involved in the transaction and highlighted the difference our multi-disciplinary strength makes. ‘The value of Technical Services' expertise in reviewing the spec and contract as part of the sale coordinated by our Brokerage team is really what separates Burgess from other brokerage firms.’

The Amels 80, which features exterior design by Espen Oeino and custom interiors by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, is a modern and dynamic yacht which incorporates over a century of yacht building experience. Her features include an impressive 200sqm (2,153 sqft) sun deck with jacuzzi, sit-up bar and dining and ‘winter-garden’ dining on the bridge deck aft.

On the lower deck, dappled with natural light through the 6.5m (21.4ft) glass-bottomed main deck aft pool, is a cleverly designed sea-level beach club that opens on three sides and includes a lounge, bar and wellness spa.

She also has a dedicated owner’s deck with floor-to-ceiling- glass windows, stowage for 11.5m (37ft) and 8.5m (27ft) tenders and plenty of toys, as well as a foredeck touch-and-go helipad. She also features state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion, a top speed of 16.5 knots and a transatlantic range of 5,000nm.

Exterior designer Espen Øino says ‘The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she departs the yard. She is a big ship, full of features, with an impressive interior volume of 2,175GT. She is everything you expect from an 80m yacht and more. There is a sense of scale, but nothing is wasted.’

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, who created the interior design concept that the owner has chosen, added ‘The Amels 80 marks the first collaboration between Sinot and Amels. This project provides us with the opportunity to develop something truly unique. You will feel at home from the moment you step on board.’

If you’ve been long awaiting catching a glimpse of Amels ‘  Aurora Borealis , well, we’ve got news. The spectacular, 220-foot superyacht , which launched in April , just arrived at the docks in Antibes, France, from Amels’ shipyard in Vlissingen, Netherlands. Now that the much-anticipated offering has been completed, it’s yours for the taking through Fraser Yachts for €87.5 million—about $94 million at the current exchange rate.

And the timing couldn’t be better. The vessel is a spacious, summertime dream in the making, with 6,458 square feet of deck space. Aurora Borealis ‘ sundeck has a hot tub and indoor gym perched atop, as well as a swim platform.

The interiors, meanwhile, promise to be just as jaw-dropping. Aurora Borealis has its own beach club waiting just behind a transom door to the lower deck, as well as a spa with relaxation area and steam room. Four en suite guest cabins also occupy this lower space.

The owner loved the Limited Editions exterior styling by award-winning yacht designer Tim Heywood, which is what drew them to the Amels 220 in the first place. And another industry vet ensured the furnishings were up to snuff: Andrew Winch of the eponymous London-based Winch Design firm.

Of course, with so much space, you’ll want to have a guest or two around. Aurora Borealis has seven staterooms, with large windows to take in the views of the Mediterranean and beyond. Fraser promises these can collectively accommodate up to 14 guests. And the main-deck master suite is a real thing of beauty, with an office, sitting area, bedroom and bathroom with tub and walk-in shower. If that makes any friends staying with you jealous, there are also two VIP staterooms with full-height windows and sitting areas on the bridge deck.

It’ll also get you where you need to go. A couple of Caterpillar 3516C engines give the yacht a top speed of 17 knots and a cruise speed of 12.5, with a range of 5,000 nautical miles while cruising at 12 knots. A tender garage houses two boats, the yacht’s Pasco limo tender and others.
