Fairline Yachts History

Fairline Yachts

The story of Fairline Yachts history begins with Jack Newington’s purchase of a cluster of disused gravel pits next to the River Nene, a tidal river in the east of England. Newington flooded the pits, creating the Oundle Marina complete with a chandlery, an under-cover boat storage area, and a fleet of small rental boats. Newington offered boat repairs and by 1967, customer demand led to the launch of the first Fairline boat, a handcrafted 19′ fiberglass river cruiser. When Jack retired four years later, his son Sam took over. The former RAF pilot put his Columbia University MBA to good use, expertly guiding Fairline Yachts and overseeing its expansion for the next 25 years.

Fairline Yachts grew rapidly over the next two decades under Sam’s leadership. The company launched the Phantom 32 in 1974, the first of a popular line-up of family cruising boats appreciated for their advanced design. Other successful launches followed, leading up to the first Targa in 1985, which proved to be a benchmark in boat style. Fairline’s popularity continued to grow until the sheer volume of sales of their exceptional vessels necessitated expansion to an additional production site.

Fairline entered the ‘large yacht’ market in 1991 with the introduction of their innovative and stylish Squadron series. To cater to customers wishing to customize these larger luxury models, Fairline created an exclusive Yacht Division to meet their every need. The exceptional performance and opulent living spaces of Fairline’s motor yachts have caused the vessels to be eagerly sought by discriminating customers seeking the very best of British craftsmanship. Fairline Yachts continues to be an exceptionally successful and innovative company, with a global dealer network, U.S. subsidiary company, and devoted following of satisfied owners.

Fairline Yachts shipyard changes ownership again

Squadron 50 by Fairline Yachts

British yacht builder Fairline Yachts is being acquired again, less than a year after the last deal. The new owner wants to accelerate the internationalization of its sales of high-end motorboats.

Hanover Investors acquires Fairline Yachts

Fairline Yachts changed ownership on June 14, 2021. Less than a year after it took over as majority shareholder of the British shipyard in July 2020, the RiverRock fund sold its stake to London-based investment fund Hanover Investors. The amount of the transaction has not been made public. It thus takes control of the high-end motorboat manufacturer founded in 1967 in Oundle, Northampshire. It has a worldwide network of 50 dealers.

Accelerating the internationalization of the British shipyard

Fairline Yachts managing director Peter McNulty welcomes the arrival of the new shareholder, which he sees as recognition of the value of the British yachting business. On this occasion, Jason Carley, a partner in the Hanover Investors fund and previously a member of Fairline Yachts' management between July 2020 and March 2021, returns to the shipyard's side. "It's a recognition of the great work done by the team here at Fairline that a company of the caliber of Hanover Investors has decided to support us. They have an excellent track record of working with companies through their global vision to integrate both investment and operations, with a particular focus on companies that are in the process of internationalizing. While we have a strong international footprint, with Hanover on board, I know we can go much further and faster," said Peter McNulty.

The spirit of adventure drives everything we do. Success, perfection, and the ultimate in luxurious experiences are all destinations we are heading for. And it has always been that way. Our reputation for making class-leading, iconic hand-built motor yachts is world renowned. But there’s a restless energy within us. One that is driving us further into the distance, to find joy and excitement in new ways and on new horizons. More beautiful experiences. More thrilling experiences. Join us.

Where it all began. Jack Newington acquires an assortment of disused gravel pits by the River Nene, as well as the land between the main lake and the road. By cutting a route through from the lake to the river, and erecting workshops, offices, a chandlery shop and slipway, he transformed the area into Oundle Marina.

Birth of Fairline. The launch of the Fairline 19, the first Fairline to ever be built. The river cruiser blended handcrafted techniques with the latest GRP boat construction practises of the time, and set the pace of the brand.

Launch of Phantom 32. Awarding Fairline long-standing credibility, the seven-berth boat remained in production for seven years, and gave its name to the long line-up of ‘family’ cruising boats that followed with such success over the next three decades.

Launch of Fairline 40, a flagship boat that remained in production for a record 11 years.

Turbo 36 launched to huge acclaim. A well-designed aft-cabin layout led the versatile model to become one of Fairline’s enduringly popular boat.

Launch of the very first Targa. An integral part of the Fairline story, the Targa 33 set the benchmark for the modern express cruiser. Fairline continues to grow apace, with new production sites at Weldon, Corby and Nene Valley, Oundle, and international recognition.

Fairline wins the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement – a major milestone in the company’s history. Pictured are Sam and Briony Newington proudly receiving this coveted and much deserved award.

Launch of the Squadron range. Establishing Fairline within the ‘large yacht’ market, the Squadron series first began with the innovative and stylish Squadron 62. The range fast became a Fairline classic, and the now-renowned flybridge models combine well-proven design features with precision marine engineering.

HRH Prince Andrew, The Duke of York opens a new, purpose built 60,000 square foot factory in Oundle to supply increased capacity from strong export sales.

The 10,000th Fairline leaves the yard, a Squadron 65. Fairline completes two of its most ambitious programmes to date: the construction of the major new production facility, Nene Valley II, and the launch of its stunning flagship yacht, the Squadron 74.

Introduction of GRAN TURISMO versions of the larger Targa models, incorporating the innovative powered retractable hardtop. Whether in OPEN form or GRAN TURISMO, Targa set the Fairline tone for sophisticated design and bold exploration.

Fairline celebrates 40 years with an impressive clutch of trophies: in the UK’s IPC Marine Awards, the Targa 38 and the Squadron 68 win MOTORBOAT OF THE YEAR in their respective categories, with the Phantom 48 being highly commended. The Targa 38 also wins EUROPEAN MOTORBOAT OF THE YEAR, the industry’s leading award.

Fairline wins the Queen’s Award for Enterprise – the world’s most prestigious award for International Trade.

Fairline’s 12,000th boat is built – a Squadron 55.

Launch of the 48 series. The innovative design incorporates both resin infusion technology and a new monocoque deck construction, as well as a unique hull designed exclusively for IPS technology.

Fairline begins work with celebrated Italian designer Alberto Mancini and Dutch naval architects, Vripack launching a new Fairline era. A collaboration uniting British craftsmanship, Italian style and Dutch engineering.

Fairline’s 50th anniversary was celebrated in style across the world. One of the largest customer events took place in Mallorca, where 50 Fairline’s came together to create the largest flotilla of its kind.

September saw the launch of the Targa 63 GTO – the first of the Alberto Mancini-designed Fairline yachts. With its fluent lines and sleek design this new model promptly won acclaim at the 2017 World Yacht Trophies winning the award for ‘Best Exterior Design’.

A busy year for Fairline Yachts that began with the high-profile sponsorship of champion racing driver Rick Parfitt Jr and ended with the new Targa 43 Open winning a World Yacht Trophie for Best Exterior Design. Not to mention acres of positive press coverage for this great new addition to the ever-expanding Fairline product range.

On her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the new Squadron 68 wins the accolade of Best Interior Design at the World Yacht Trophies – the Oscars of the yachting industry. This win, against some very stiff competition, makes a hat-trick of wins for Fairline Yachts at this prestigious annual event.

The sleek and sporty F//LINE 33 beat tough competition to take the crown in the hotly contested “Superboats” category at the 2020 Motorboat of the Year Awards. Described as an “extremely hard category to judge” by the panel from Motorboat & Yachting magazine.

Renowned Italian yacht designer, Alberto Mancini – who designed the F//LINE 33 in partnership with the Fairline Yachts Design Studio said, “I put my heart and soul into every boat I design, regardless of the size. This is such a huge honour for me and for Fairline.”

Fairline To Debut Two New Yachts

  • By Yachting Staff
  • December 11, 2023

Fairline Targa 40

British yacht builder Fairline says it will have the global debut of its Targa 40 and the European debut of its Squadron 58 at Boot Düsseldorf in January.

The Fairline Targa 40 creates a new entry point for the builder’s Targa series, which also includes 45- and 50-foot models. Fairline says the Targa 40 takes design cues from its predecessor, the Targa 38, with a modern feel and multifunction livability. The family-size express cruiser is notable for its flowing profile, enhanced by hull-side glass, which visually lowers the exterior look. The Targa 40’s sheerline seemingly streaks aft, indicating the yacht’s potential mid-30-knot performance. The beam expands admiships helping optimize interior volume and the two-stateroom layout, before tapering aft and resolving at the SUV-like cockpit arrangement.

To that end, the Targa 40’s cockpit has a foldout deck to starboard, increasing usable deck real estate. A sun pad here can be adjusted several ways to create seating facing aft as well as towards the foldout deck. C-shape seating to port wraps around a table for alfresco meals. Like the other seating spaces, the backrests can be adjusted to create aft-facing seating to keep an eye on swimmers or just take in a sunset with friends. To port, there is also a garage with tender stowage.

Fairline Targa 40

The bridge deck’s two-seat helm station with Garmin displays is to starboard and there is guest seating to port. A hardtop with retractable canvas can open the main deck to the sun and breeze when desired.

Belowdecks, the Targa 40 has an owners’ stateroom forward with access to the single head with shower, taking full advantage of the yacht’s 13-foot beam. Abaft the owners’ space is a guest stateroom with twin berths for kids or guests. There is also a U-shaped dinette to starboard and a galley with two-burner electric cooktop, sink and more. All of the spaces belowdecks have water views out the hull-side windows.

Power for the Fairline Targa 40 is either twin 340 hp Volvo Penta D6 diesels or twin 380 hp Volvo Penta D6 diesels paired to sterndrives. Projected top hop is 32 knots and 36 knots, respectively.

Fairline Squadron 58

The Fairline Squadron 58 fits into the middle of the builer’s flybridge series, which also includes the Squadron 50 and Squadron 68 .

Like the Targa 40, the Squadron 58 is aimed at maximizing available real estate and increasing it where it can.

For instance, the Squadron 58 has hydraulic foldout decks to port and starboard. This setup lets owners place two stools into the port side deck, and with the window down it creates an inside-outside bar area connecting it to the aft galley. To starboard, the balcony creates a seating area for morning coffee with a book. The cockpit has U-shaped seating on centerline with views aft through the glass balustrade. It’s a modular seating arrangement so, like the Targa 40, they can be adjusted to change views. Teak steps flanking the cockpit lead to the yacht’s beach club, which has an extendable teak swim platform, where sun pads can be added or owners can use the space for swimming or to launch the tender and water toys.

The Squadron 58 has two twin-seat helm stations, both located to starboard. On The flybridge, there is guest seating across from the helm as well as U-shaped seating with a table. On the main deck, there is guest seating abaft the helm as well as dinette to port.

Fairline Squadron 58

Accommodations on the Squadron 58 include a three-stateroom layout with a full-beam owners’ space amidships, a forepeak VIP and a third guest stateroom with twins abaft and to starboard of the VIP. The standard layout includes a two-head arrangement. There is a dayhead option, which places the third head all the way aft. There is also a crew-cabin option, although most buyers will be owner-operators.

Power for the Fairline Squadron 58 is either twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels or twin 1,000 hp D13 diesels, both in a conventional straight-shaft configuration. Fairline reports top hops of about 31 and 32 knots, respectively.

Why A Fairline Yacht Should Be Your Choice of Yacht

Though there are over 200 yacht building companies in the world, few have as enviable a reputation as Fairline . This British manufacturer of luxury motor yachts was the brainchild of Jack Newington who started the company in 1963 in Northamptonshire.

Since its inception, Fairline has become renowned for its high-speed line of iconic hand-built motor yachts. Combining British craftsmanship with Italian elegance, Fairline yachts are famed for their contemporary styling, reliable construction, and adaptable innovation. Anywhere you find Fairline yachts for sale , you are becoming a part of its long-standing heritage built on a passion for adventure.

The brand has won several awards over the years, including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade and for boat design at the 2018 Cannes Boat Show where it carried the Best Exterior Design trophy in the 14-18m category for its Targa 43 Open. The latter award in particular speaks to the design prowess of the brand that has been proven to be of the highest quality.

If you are looking to invest in a yacht, then you have several good reasons to want to make it a Fairline yacht.

British Craftsmanship

Fairline Targa 65

Manufacturing and fabrication are taken very seriously. The quality of workmanship and resulting durability and reliability of the design is unmistakable. British craftsmanship in just about every industry is known to simply be one of the best. The crafted products are meticulously made with great thought and care.

Fairline Yachts are made to this same exacting standard that results in vessels that are stronger, safer, and more durable than what you would get from most other markets. Even with some changing ownership over the years, the quality standards and brand loyalty from its customers have remained consistent. To ensure this high standard is maintained throughout its production line, Fairline continues to manufacture its yachts out of its Oundle manufacturing facility in Northamptonshire to date.

F line 33

The Fairline brand is a longstanding one. Well over 50 years old, the brand has steadily evolved in its use of technology and styling to deliver better high-performance yachts to the market every time. From navigation to engines, the company is continually looking at ways to improve their yachts without having to sacrifice the qualities that make Fairline popular.

Whatever the company does not build in-house comes from other world-class manufacturers as evidenced by the Volvo Penta engines in its F//Line 33 cruisers and Caterpillar engines in its Phantom line. In a bid to cater to an even bigger market, the company is also working on producing even larger yachts at its new manufacturing facility at Fairline Marine Park in Southampton.

Fairline F Line 33

Fairline has always considered the comfort and elegance of its yachts to be very important. By partnering with famed yacht designer Alberto Mancini, the brand has proven its commitment to aesthetics and functionality. In both the exterior and interior designs, you can see the attention paid to ensuring proportionality and elegance. Qualities that may have contributed to their trophy win at the 2018 Cannes Boat Show.

Fairline Squadron 68 Evoque

The company has launched numerous boat models over the years, with the most familiar lines today being the Squadron and Targa range. The Squadron are larger superyacht vessels ranging from 13 to 24 metres, while the Targa range is sportier with lighter and smaller vessels ranging between 12 to 19 metres.

The F//LINE 33 dayboat is a more recent addition from 2019 that offers a classic yet sleek express cruiser ideal for short trips with family or a few friends. Precision engineering and speed are hallmarks of this powerful model that comes in both petrol and diesel options. Inspired by the Targa, the Phantom is a luxury option whose features of a sportsbridge, spacious galley, and integrated garage for a tender make it ideally suited for lengthier jaunts loaded with the amenities needed by thrill-seekers.

This variety in terms of size, style, performance, and luxury options means that no matter what you are looking for in a small to medium-sized yacht, you will likely find it within this brand. When it comes to budget, the durable craftsmanship of Fairline means that the brand is well represented in the pre-owned market , allowing even bargain hunters the opportunity to join the club at a lesser price.

When choosing to invest in such a high-value item that you are likely to enjoy the use for many years to come, you need to ensure the manufacturer is not only sound but also offers good support, at the very least for the duration of the warranty. Yachts are high performance and precision engineered vessels, maintenance and repair should be carefully undertaken.

Thankfully, Fairline does offer good customer support with after-sales services that aid yacht owners in accessing genuine spare parts when they need them. They do also offer boat servicing at their facilities, which are in the UK. For clients and their vessels that are located further away, there are many affiliated dealers that can help with accessing suitable parts and qualified engineers.

The company also supports the Fairline Owners Club which has a membership of over 3,500 yacht owners from over 10 countries. Clients can also directly get in touch with the company through phone, email, mail, online contact form, and social media. Their social media handles appear to be active and worth a follow if you want to keep updated on all things Fairline-related.
