$50m superyacht glaze visits top end on trip around the world.

A SUPERYACHT worth more than $50 million has anchored off Darwin to refuel and resupply before heading to the Kimberley.

The superyacht Glaze is moored off Darwin Harbour. PICTURE: Patrina Malone

Don't miss out on the headlines from Northern Territory. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Glaze is a 50m luxury vessel with a jacuzzi, bar, five cabins and jet skis.

The swanky boat motored into Top End waters last week and is due to depart on Thursday.

Andrew and Stuart French, from Palmerston Shipping and Logistics, acted as the ship’s agent while it was in Darwin.

“( Glaze ) is a foreign vessel that’s travelling the world,” Stuart said. “Generally, with a yacht like this, the captain and the crew will sail the ship from port to port and the owner will fly in for a week or two.”

Stuart said in their job as agent they helped with the logistics of customs, AQIS, refuelling and resupplying.

“We’re here to make their life easy,” he said.

“We don’t speak to the owners – we deal with the ship’s captain or manager.”

Stuart said Palmerston Shipping and Logistics had looked after about 30 luxury vessels in the past six years but only three in the past year.

“Darwin should do more to cater for these yachts,” he said. “We’d like to see more superyacht berthings to attract more to Darwin – we need a floating pontoon like Cairns and Brisbane have.”

Superyachts hit Melbourne

Four superyachts visit melbourne docklands and owners and crews come away smiling.

Melbourne has played host to four superyachts recently at the Melbourne Superyacht Marina which is Victoria's premiere superyacht destination. The four big boats were Glaze, Silver Cloud, Texas, and Vegas. Located at Melbourne Docklands, the Superyacht Marina is in a magnificent location, only walking distance from the vibrant Melbourne shopping precinct. The attraction of Melbourne for superyachts is the fact it is right in the heart of everything. You can take a tender to the Tennis, to the Cricket, to the Melbourne Cup and of course the Melbourne Grand Prix is only a few minutes away.

Melbourne is renowned for its wine and food culture which, it is understood, these visiting superyacht guests have taken advantage of.

Melbourne Superyacht Marina is managed by the City of Melbourne Docklands Waterways and provides a broad range of facilities for visiting boats with dedicated superyacht berthing for vessels up to 65m, private, secure, gated berthing, single and three-phase power up to 100 Amperes / 415 Volts, telephone lines, fresh water, security and sewage pump-out at each berth, waste disposal management and a fantastic marina lounge a short walk away with showers, TV, kitchenette and free internet for crew use.

Maryanne Edwards of Superyacht Australia said: "It is exciting for Melbourne to play host to four superyachts at the same time. Melbourne is starting to attract a lot of enquiry from superyachts regarding marina facilities and with a growing event base, Melbourne may soon see more vessels heading that way.

"The economic return to Melbourne from these four superyachts was estimated to be over a quarter of a million dollars, a huge boost to Docklands and the businesses servicing this industry sector," she added.

Victoria is certainly delivering on the promise with Captain Carl Brandes from MY Glaze commenting: "After reviewing the marinas of the Port of Melbourne it was the obvious choice to position the yacht in Victoria Harbour, Docklands. The marina facilities are world class and ideally located close to the city, safe and protected from weather and the personnel are very attentive and courteous.

"The dock itself is perfectly suited for securing superyachts safely with appropriate size bollards and fendering. The dock is clean and well presented for guest arrivals and departures, with good vehicle access for guest transfers. All our requests were received well, handled quickly and professionally, ensuring the success of our time in Melbourne.

"In-fact everyone that we have dealt with in Melbourne have been fantastic and very helpful. We have enjoyed our stay and we all look forward to our next visit," Mr Brandes concluded. Kimberley Coast in the spotlight

The voyager's award at this year's world superyacht awards went to 49-metre motor yacht glaze, exploring the vast and ancient splendour of wa's kimberley coast..

Written by AIMEX-Superyacht Australia Photography by Tourism WA

18 May 2017

The winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2017 were announced at a glittering ceremony held at Palazzo Vecchio in the beautiful city of Florence Italy on Saturday night 13 May.

The three finalists in this year’s Voyager’s category were all incredible journeys making the judges’ task of selecting a winner not easy.

But a winner had to be selected and the judges decided the meticulously planned cruise by the 49-metre Glaze , which is currently engaged on a circumnavigation with the owners and their young family stood out from the rest.

The segment of their world cruise in Australia between Wyndham and Broome, where they visited the remote, spectacular and extremely rugged coastline known as The Kimberleys showcased a unique part of the world and confirms Australia’s place as a new and exciting destination for the global superyacht fleet.

thumb img

This adventure-packed cruise explored the region’s many inlets and rivers, mostly poorly or totally uncharted, and included many sightings of crocodiles and sharks, as well as experiences such as dipping their yacht’s bows in waterfalls tumbling down the vertical red cliffs, whirlpools, tidal rapids, and visits to Aboriginal cave art, and even the well-preserved remains of a DC3 aircraft downed in WWII. This voyage will surely be an inspiration to all who follow.

“Just to attend the World Superyacht Awards 2017 representing MY Glaze as an incredible experience, not to mention being nominated as a finalist for the prestigious Voyager’s Award, for our Australian, Kimberley Adventure,” stated Captain Carl Brandes.

“My wife and I found ourselves standing amongst industry greats, people that we have only seen in the media, people that have shaped this extravagant industry to what we know it as today.

“These awards are recognised as the pinnacle of achievement. Some say they are the Oscars of the luxurious Superyacht Industry. The competition was fierce and the other finalists were very deserving of the award. When they announced the winner, it took a few seconds to sink in. My wife Melanie and I were honoured to accept the Neptune award on behalf of everyone involved with Glaze and the Australian Kimberley Region.

“Winning this award was also unexpected recognition for the passionate lengths all the Glaze crew go to, to be able to deliver life experiences to our owners and guests.

“Obviously none of this could be achieved without the vision, passion and enthusiasm that our owners have for their yacht, and for discovering these seldom explored areas.

“Cruising Australia has been like nowhere else around the world, we have been so privileged to have experienced so much, taken advantage of Australia’s year round cruising season. I can only highly recommend Australia and the Pacific Islands to any Owners and Captains, to see this spectacular region for yourself.”

This win for Australia comes at a time when Superyacht Australia are lobbying for the Federal government to remove the restrictions on foreign flagged superyachts wanting to visit and charter in Australia. A recent independent economic impact study clearly shows the huge value in terms of jobs and revenue for the Australian economy if this barrier is removed.

At a time when the federal government is looking for new revenue streams it would appear this is a huge opportunity. The superyacht industry would be a boom for regional Australia and this is one industry sector that has invested heavily in infrastructure to support and drive future growth. The government has prioritised removing red tape, driving the tourism dollar and creating jobs for regional Australia. The superyacht industry is a new industry sector that would provide regional Australia with the boost they need particularly post Cyclone Debbie.

thumb img

This recognition for Australia will be a bonus for Tourism Australia who have recently seen the potential for this industry sector supporting several industry famils to bring high end tourism operators and charter brokers to Australia to experience the spectacular cruising destinations Australia can offer.

Organised by Sydney-based charter broker, Ocean Alliance on 42-metre superyacht Anda , this initiative brings international media, brokers and luxury travel agents to Australia to experience what Australia has to offer both in cruising destinations and capability to service the global superyacht fleet.

High profile Queensland and international businesses have also been quick to back the first ever Australian Superyacht Rendezvous being staged at Gold Coast City Marina, 19 and 20 May in a bid to tap into economic potential of the estimated 20 billion Euro global superyacht industry.

The Australian Superyacht Rendezvous – aimed at showcasing the economic and tourism potential of superyachts in Australia – has attracted the support of some of the biggest names in the marine industry and will include a yacht hop event by day for tourism and events industry professionals followed by an invitation only glamour evening party for business, industry and media and will conclude with a superyacht crew party on the final day.

Trent Gay the organiser of the event stated: “This win by Glaze confirms our investment in putting on an event such as this. We know Australia has some of the world’s best cruising grounds. While this win will attract the high end global tourism market to experience what Australia and the Kimberley region has to offer, it will also pique the interest of Australians looking for a unique experience.

“This weekend we are providing an amazing opportunity for this particular sector of the tourism market to come and have tours around the best yachts Australia has on offer.”

MaryAnne Edwards CEO of Superyacht Australia said “Congratulations have to go to Carl Brandes and the team from Glaze for their initiative in entering this voyage into these prestigious global awards. Thanks should also go to the owner of Glaze who has supported Carl and the crew in their endeavours to promote Australia.

“Captain Carl Brandes is from Sydney and he is passionate about promoting Australia and the safe, pristine, secluded cruising destinations on offer here. Carl has confirmed the significant spend Glaze and other international visiting superyachts spend in Australia while here providing significant support to regional economies. This is a fact also confirmed by the recent economic impact study.

“It is fantastic that Tourism Australia also sees the potential in this industry sector and are providing the much needed professional marketing advice and tools that the industry needs to compete in a very competitive global market.

“Our key goal is attracting vessels away from the traditional cruising grounds of the Med and the Caribbean and wins like this International prestigious Voyager’s award will definitely put a spotlight on Australia.

“We are also excited to announce Melanie Brandes will attend the ASMEX conference to talk with MC Martin Redmayne from the Superyacht Report about the award entry which Melanie put together and about their fantastic Kimberley voyage.”

Super yachts add to prosperity

Super yachts add to prosperity

By Nicholas Li

City of Melbourne has its sights set on attracting boats of all sizes, including super yachts, to Melbourne City Marina in Docklands.

According to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, the council’s new $3 million dollar marina lounge and waterways office is growing in popularity with both multi-million-dollar super yachts and smaller boats.

Super yacht Glaze was berthed at Melbourne City Marina throughout March.

“When we built the Melbourne City Marina, we were hoping to get yachts, specifically super yachts, into Docklands. In the last year it’s just exceeded our expectations by so far it doesn’t matter,” the Lord Mayor said.

“These are the sorts of vessels that cruise the world. We want them in Melbourne. We want them activating Docklands.”

“It is the stuff of dreams. This is a floating embodiment of enjoying your success,” he said.

Cr Doyle said the construction of the now completely finished marina was needed.

“We probably haven’t utilised the water as much as we should have. But over the last year we’ve redressed that with the Melbourne City Marina,” he said.

According to Cr Doyle, the marina received 570 bookings during the summer period, with the average stay increasing to around three nights, translating to more activity and more spending in Docklands.

The marina can accommodate casual and short-term berths for boats up to 70 metres and the dedicated super yacht marina can accommodate up to four yachts of up to 65 metres.

“Docklands boasts Victoria’s only harbour for super yachts. We received steady bookings from these luxury vessels over the summer period. There is huge potential to grow this market and attract more top-end travelers to Melbourne,” the Lord Mayor said.

The council’s plan to attract maritime visitors coincides with the council’s continued focus on developing nightlife.

As well as promoting local facilities in Docklands, the council hopes to draw visitors into the CBD by extending alcohol licenses to select venues until 3am.

In the wake of recent national controversy surrounding alcohol related violence, Cr Doyle was careful to separate the city’s plans from the issue.

“These are not the establishments which give us any trouble. The clientele appreciate quiet enjoyment of the city at night,” he said.
