Ferretti

Luxury throughout.

Boat Test #1732 By: Captain Christopher Kourtakis

Breathtakingly beautiful, astonishingly comfortable, the Ferretti Yachts 500 ushers in a new era for the brand. The brand-new yacht combines nautical adventures with domestic spaces that you would expect to find on their larger yachts. This yacht allows you to immerse your guests and family, while allowing you to discover life’s pleasures.

As you enter the cabin through the sliding glass door, the galley is immediately to the port. Forward you have a plush L-shaped dinette to the port and a large bench immediately across. The helm is functionally laid out with two large multi-functional displays and all the controls at your fingertips.

The master stateroom is midship and provides a large airy cabin with windows adoring either side of the cabin. There is plenty of storage on either side, along with a built-in love seat. The mirrored wall just above the bed expands the size of the cabin. The forward cabin is just as luxurious with plenty of natural light and a berth fit for a queen. The third stateroom has two bunk beds that each have their own nightstand.

The bridge is open and provides a breathtaking view from any one of the seats. To the aft is a L-shaped dinette. The helm is forward on the portside with a large sun pad immediately to the starboard. The forward sun pad on the bow of the boat is plush and provides room for three to four adults. Teak decking can be found throughout the bow and the rest of the walking surfaces.

The main deck outside seating area is spacious and protected from the elements.

The massive swim platform can be accessed from either side of the cockpit. The bow area is easily accessible with the integrated stairs on both the starboard and port side of the cockpit. The plush seating area can accommodate up to four adults comfortably and room for two more if you want to add a couple of chairs.

The lines of the 500 are like no other. They stretch the boat out to look and feel larger than it is. The placement of the windows and the design of the main cabin windows create sleekness yet open the interior. The 500 is timeless and breathtaking. No wonder as she is made by Ferretti!

Ferretti Yachts 500

The Ferretti Yachts 500 is being promoted as a new model that ushers in an entirely new era for the Italian builder, with its design elements and styling expected to appear in larger models right up to Ferretti’s flagship.

Ferretti’s Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari worked on the design with the Ferretti Group’s Engineering Department, architect Filippo Salvetti (on exteriors) and design studio Ideaeitalia (on interiors).

“The design of the new Ferretti Yachts 500 highlights an overall dynamism thanks to new and innovative stylistic features of the superstructure,” Salvetti stated in a press release. “A natural heir to the Ferretti Yachts 720, it reinterprets the new styles of the range in a very personal way.”

Ferretti Yachts 500

Owners can choose one of two interiors: classic, with dark oak, glossy and matte lacquers in black and white, brown and beige fabrics and leathers, and shiny nickel and dark marble; or contemporary, with sand-shaded oak, glossy and matte white lacquers, glass and polished steel accents, fabrics in gray, light blue and beige, and white marble.

Furnishings and accents in both interior schemes are by Graniti Fiandre, Galassia, OML, Colombo, Cadorin, Pellini, Paffoni and the Gentili Mosconi Home Collection of fabrics for Ferretti Yachts.

Ferretti Yachts 500

What are the performance projections? With twin 550-horsepower Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels, the top speed is 30 knots and the cruising speed is 25 knots, according to preliminary data from Ferretti Yachts.

The new Ferretti Yachts 500 Takes Comfort to a New Level

By Victor Baker

Published on November 30, 2020

Ferretti Yachts 500 1

What better way to start the week than daydreaming about your favorite destination and some good weather? Better yet, the brilliant team from Ferretti Yachts has unveiled the first unit of the new Ferretti Yachts 500, making sure we can all dream about this stunning vessel as well, while imagining how we can enjoy life to its fullest next year.

The result of a collaboration between Piero Ferrari’s Product Strategy Committee, the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, Italian yacht designer Filippo Salvetti, who imagined for the exteriors of this vessel, and IdeaeItalia, the design firm in charge of the new interior concept, this vessel has plenty going for itself – and we haven’t even discussed any of its features yet.

Ferretti Yachts 500 2

Well, we can start with this: it looks absolutely stunning! Coming in at 15.33 meters in length (around 50 ft), this yacht puts out a familiar vibe while being as comfortable as the brand’s larger projects. On the outside, the new 500 motor yacht shows off an aerodynamic design, with streamlined styling, while benefitting from generous areas and large windows.

The main deck invites passengers to enjoy a spacious lounge area, with comfy sofas and a modern table with a stainless steel base. The stern swim platform, featuring optional steps when submerged and fitted with a cool generation lift system is another highlight of this yacht.

Ferretti Yachts 500 4

The cockpit area is where everyone aboard is welcomed to relax. The flybridge features an aft dining area, furnished with a C-shaped sofa that extends on both sides, while the huge sun pad on the starboard was fitted with a double backrest for maximum comfort. Are you feeling overwhelmed yet?

On the lower deck, Ferretti Yachts made sure customers may choose one of two different layouts: one with a spacious master cabin and a VIP cabin, both with a private bathroom and small laundry, and the other choice including a smaller master cabin, a VIP cabin, and a double with two single beds and two bathrooms. Which one do you prefer?

Ferretti Yachts 500 5

The full-beam master cabin from the first layout could make your choice very difficult. It has a mirror behind the bed that stretches across the entire width of the cabin, a 43-inch TV and various other seductive design choices can be found here.

Speaking of choices, the first unit of Ferretti Yachts 500 features cool decor elements inspired by the colors of Santorini and furnishings such as Graniti Fiandre, Galassia and OML, Pellini lacquered Venetian blinds, and much more. Had enough?

Ferretti Yachts 500 6

The new Ferretti Yachts 500 comes packing a pair of Cummins QSB 6.7 engines, each of them good for 550 ponies and able to deliver an impressive top speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots – promising optimized fuel consumption.

Ferretti Yachts 500: Your Private Island

  • June 16, 2021

With two units already in Asia, Ferretti Yachts’ new 500 features Filippo Salvetti’s familiar clean exterior lines but is the brand’s first model to feature interiors by IdeaeItalia, which offers high-end elegance in two distinct moods.

ferretti yachts 500 review

Stepping aboard the first Ferretti Yachts 500 in Asia, it’s the ample space that first grabs my attention, despite the fact this is the Italian builder’s new entry-level model. Firstly, the depth of both the swim platform and cockpit belies the fact that this is a 50-footer. Then again, this is no ordinary 50ft motor yacht.

Making its debut at the Ferretti Group Private Preview at the Monaco Yacht Club last September, the 500 is the third and smallest of four Ferretti Yachts models featuring an exterior by the renowned Filippo Salvetti along with the 670 (2018), 720 (2019) and the flagship 1000 (2021), which premiered at this year’s Venice Boat Show.

Furthermore, it’s the first Ferretti Yachts model to feature an interior by IdeaeItalia, the design studio based in La Spezia, which is also home to one of Riva’s biggest shipyards. And despite being one of the smaller models produced within the Group, only a dozen or so units are scheduled to be built each year.

The first Ferretti Yachts 500 in Asia proves an ideal way to escape the city

“It’s not a mass-production yacht,” stresses Fabiomassimo Discoli, Sales and Marketing Director of Ferretti Group Asia Pacific, as he guides me around the first 500 in Hong Kong before she headed to Taiwan for delivery to her owner. “The high level of finishing and details, especially in the interior, have been mentioned by those seeing it in Asia via video and in other parts of the world.

“Usually in a boat of this size, the competition is in the price. Unfortunately, Ferretti Yachts cannot compete on price because our engineering and production follow the same path as our bigger boats, despite the size of the 500.

“The engineering, the mould, bonding, materials and finishing are still very expensive to manufacture. We do want to be in this size segment, though, to attract newer clients. Some may aspire to own a Ferretti and would like to own a small one.”

ferretti yachts 500 review

The sofa and table in the aft cockpit can be set up in various ways

The previous 45ft model in this line had been produced with a different concept in mind, a little more conscious of budget, but the newcomer has the same DNA as its big sisters.

“The 500 feels like a larger Ferretti Yachts model in terms of the luxury experience. In the interior, you can’t see any fibreglass,” Discoli emphasises.

“Everything is covered by wood, leather or other materials. IdeaeItalia was able to understand that we want this feeling of being in a fresh, contemporary luxury interior that is understated and very nautical [in practicalities]. All corners are rounded, for example, which is very important for a small boat.”

AFT ENTERTAINING AREA

Those soft corners inside the saloon are all the more important due to the generously-sized cockpit, which has been noted as a key attraction by would-be owners internationally. The multifunctional bench seating and table set are the focal point, transforming in seconds from a tilting back rest, to a flat lounge area, to upright seating with raised, full-size solid-teak dining table.

ferretti yachts 500 review

The sliding doors and raised galley window create a connected, covered social zone

Within reach is an outside cabinet with refrigerator and ice-machine option, adjoining the galley, positioned aft of the saloon to be fully open if desired. This allows meals or cocktails to be easily served, especially if self-piloting without a crew.

Crew-cabin access is via a concealed hatch within the cockpit bench. The cabin has natural ventilation via portholes as well as air-conditioning. Mooring lines are kept out of sight and harm’s way within flip-up cladded housing.

ferretti yachts 500 review

Also with safety in mind, two steps down, the swim platform descends and ascends on an outward sloping angle without ever losing contact with the stern, a signature feature on Ferretti Yachts models that prevents any potentially dangerous gap.

A shortened platform length is available, making manoeuvrability a little easier if self-captaining. Importantly, the reduced length makes the model eligible for use with a Pleasure Vessel Operator Grade Two licence in Hong Kong, which allows piloting of vessels under 50ft, while the standard FY500 is classified as Grade One.

INNER SALOON

With the galley-up configuration as standard, meals can be had at an extendable portside table with C-shaped banquette seating that fits up to six. With a reduced table size, this spot makes a good lounging or viewing area opposite a two-to-three person sofa to starboard, behind which a 43-inch flat-screen TV gently rises at the touch of a control button.

ferretti yachts 500 review

The galley is aft, while the saloon is a step up

IdeaeItalia has created two interior ‘moods’ for owners to choose from. Asia’s first hull has the Contemporary selection, with its subtle palette of grey, blue and ivory, inspired by Mediterranean hues. The Classic mood features more earthy and natural tones.

The galley itself is equipped with a microwave oven, four-ring stove (two-ring is standard), full-size refrigerator and freezer drawers, a dishwasher (an additional option) and plenty of storage cabinets and drawers.

ferretti yachts 500 review

The saloon enjoys excellent views, while the table can be adjusted for casual use or dining

Furnishing materials in the saloon and elsewhere feature top-grade upholstery fabrics and panel claddings, such as Alcantara synthetic and washable suede covering for ceiling panelling.

“Durability is important,” says Discoli. “We plan for the quality of materials to stay the same for 20 years.”

Grey-stained, attractively-grained engineered walnut wood veneer atop composite cabinetry is used to help keep weight down.

ferretti yachts 500 review

The lower helm station is comfortable and comprehensive

A customised stainless-steel steering wheel at the helm is covered in cream leather that matches the captain’s chair. Sunken spotlighting in the saloon can be dimmed to avoid reflection when underway at night, and two micro-sized spots above the helm can be illuminated.

STAIRWAY TO HAVEN

The flybridge is accessed by a newly designed cockpit stairwell that has wide, deep, round-edged steps and easy-to-reach rails of generous girth each side, suitable for passengers of any age. Salvetti has lowered the height of the top deck compared to previous models to improve stability in open water and impart a sleeker silhouette to the vessel.

ferretti yachts 500 review

The flybridge has a large sofa and a table aft, plus a wet bar to port

A spacious helm station is within talking distance of a versatile lounger, with thoughtful wraparound “place-all” shelving. The grill station, basin and fridge-freezer behind the helm are convenient for the L-shaped bench seating and table area. A sturdy flybridge canopy is fitted as standard and goes up in minutes at low speeds or when stationary.

The bow, accessed by side decks from the cockpit, is a tranquil, expansive sunpad area with drinks holders at each side.

ferretti yachts 500 review

The flybridge also has a large sunbathing area by the helm

Accessed by a central stairwell in the saloon, the standard three-cabin configuration presents noticeably generous headroom throughout the lower deck.

The midships master cabin has an ensuite bathroom and makes full use of the 14ft 2in beam, with large windows and portholes bringing in light and ocean-level views.

ferretti yachts 500 review

Lit by large hull windows, the master suite has lots of storage to starboard and a sofa to port

The roomy VIP suite forward and a twin-bunk cabin to starboard share another bathroom. All cabins contain good storage space. There’s also an option for just two guest cabins on the lower deck, with

Discoli is confident that the Ferretti Yachts 500 will continue to attract owners in Asia, where a new unit for sale recently arrived in Hong Kong, home to Ferretti Group’s regional headquarters.

ferretti yachts 500 review

The forward VIP cabin is among two or three guest cabins

“There is a lot of space on board for a family of four or more,” he says. “I’ve already had talks with long-term clients in Hong Kong who own the previous 450, 460 or the old 500 who are interested in upgrading.” www.ferretti-yachts.com www.ferrettigroupasiapacific.com

Ferretti 500 first look: New entry-level model to expand Italian yard’s range

  • Top stories

The Ferretti 500, which comes into the range beneath the 550, is the new gateway into the Ferretti Yachts family.

There is skill in designing a so-called ‘entry- level’ boat for a brand like Ferretti , customers don’t expect to feel they are getting an inferior product because the model is the cheapest in the stable yet the margins on boats of this size are wafer thin.

This hasn’t stopped the Italian yard from throwing the big guns at the Ferretti 500. Filippo Salvetti penned the exterior, while Ideaitalia is responsible for the interior. The result is a boat that is handsome and classy if a little safe in its design language.

The idea was to create a boat that feels like home, according to the yard, and though endless levels of customisation aren’t practical on production boats of this scale, two distinct interior finishes – light oak Santorini and the darker Portofino – give customers a degree of control over the look and feel of their Ferretti 500.

It is available with either two ensuite cabins and a utility space, or three cabins and two bathrooms, the latter a good choice for a 50-footer. The sole engine option of twin Cummins 550s keeps things simple, the 30-knot top speed enough for most, with an estimated range of 200nm at 25 knots.

The Ferretti 500 looks a classy addition to the 50ft flybridge arena.

Ferretti’s New 50-Footer Blurs the Lines Between Cruiser and Luxury Yacht

FY500

Fifty feet seems to be the informal cutoff point between cruisers and motoryachts. After that, the interiors get larger, engines have more horsepower and rooms become more spacious. Ferretti Yachts has done some serious redesign work on its new 500 to turn it into a complete motoryacht, with the features borrowed from larger superyachts.

The 50-footer has larger-yacht features like dual staircases from the swim platform (which submerges for easier tender deployment/retrieval or a swimming area) up to the cockpit. The cockpit is more than a nook on this yacht, but a legitimate social zone, with an enormous sofa (which reclines) and table to accommodate up to 10 people for al-fresco dining. Up on the flybridge, the rear area is also set up for dining with the lounge and table, with a large sun pad in the forward section. On the bow is a third social zone with sun pads with reclining backrests.

Stefano de Vivo, chief commercial officer of the Ferretti Group , told Robb Report that the new design is aimed to reflect Ferretti Yachts’ new internal mantra, “Just Like Home,” in an upscale, luxurious way. Home will have dual meanings in this case, since Ferretti is offering “classic” and “contemporary” interiors, each with a different type of Italian personality.

FY500

The Ferretti Yachts 500’s classic interior uses darker woods and fabrics to create a sense of warmth across the cabin.  Ferretti Yachts

The 500 is actually the first of a complete redesign of Ferretti Yachts’ model lineup. “This project is ushering in a new era for the brand,” designer Filippo Salvetti told Robb Report . “We want to combine the adventure of ocean cruising with a domestic dimension. That will come through larger spaces of the interior and many other solutions found on much larger yachts.”

Salvetti says the new designs will focus on how people use their yachts, rather than simply designing them as nautical trophies. Yet, all will retain elements of luxury such as the Gentili Mosconi Home Collection of Fabrics that define the salon and staterooms, or small but important details like Cadorin parquet, Pellini-lacquered Venetian blinds and Paffoni sink taps in the en suites, to create a complete picture of home.

The Classic interior, says Salvetti, was inspired by warm tones, including dark oak bulkheads, brown and beige fabrics and leathers, as well as shiny nickel detailing, among other features.

FY 500

Just Like Home 2: The full-beam master with the Contemporary interior uses more colors, lighter wood tones and white ceiling to create a bright ambiance.

The Contemporary interior is more about Mediterranean brightness, with light oak bulkheads, decor and flooring, along with glass, polished steel, and fabrics of light blue, gray and beige. The idea is to provide contrasts between the materials and colors for a balance that is both elegant and relaxing. “The two different moods of decor by the Ideaeitalia studio perfectly reflects our Just like Home philosophy,” Salvetti says.

The Ferretti Yachts 500 will be powered by twin 550-hp Cummins QSB 6.7 engines, which will deliver a top speed of 30 knots and cruising speed of 25 knots.

Ferretti 500 Project

Ferretti 500 Project

  • 12 Passengers

Description

Ferretti shipyard announced its newest project for 2020. In September, a modern Ferretti 500, the heir to 720 and a successful 450 models, will be shown at a boat show in Cannes. The new concept involves a style revolution that starts with a 50-foot segment and spans the entire fleet range. The design of the exteriors was done by architect Filippo Salvetti, and the design was done by Ideaeitalia. The interior uses only hypoallergenic materials and offers two colors.

The cockpit has increased due to the length of the yacht. The main deck has a spacious lounge area. On the wide flybridge there is enough space for relaxation, the installation of a grill bar and a control post. Climbing it is more convenient thanks to the stairs with an increased inclination. Flybridge can be covered from the sun by a built-in bimini tent. Convenient movement on the yacht is provided by extended side walkways. The windows in the building have acquired modern forms.

The layout includes three cabins: for the captain in the aft and two guest rooms with separate bathrooms. The maximum number of passengers is 12. You can order a third guest or laundry.

Ferretti Yachts 500 will receive the energy of two Cummins QSB engines with 550 horsepower, which will allow you to develop a cruising speed of 25 knots, a maximum of 30. It is possible to additionally install the Seakeeper pitch stabilizer, which will provide maximum stability at anchor and during navigation, and will allow comfortable traveling along rivers and the sea.

Ferretti Yachts 860 Review (2022 Edition)

The Ferretti 860 replaces the 850 and comes to the market bristling with fresh design touches and 30-knot performance.

Ferretti Yachts 860 Review (2022 Edition) image 1

The all-new Ferretti 860 slots into the range between 780 and 920 and in replacing the 850 it has the tough task of taking the reins from one of the most popular models in the Ferretti range.

Given the number that had found owners even before we caught up with it at the 2022 Cannes Boat Show, it would seem that the design team has got the formula right. The headlines are that the 860 has four ensuite cabins and space for four crew, a tender garage large enough for both a tender and a jet-ski and with twin 2,000hp MAN V12s it will crack 30 knots. Read on to see what it's like on board and from behind the helm.

Our Scores Explained

Performance & Handling

Whichever of the two MAN V12 engine options you opt for, the 860 will not be lacking in power. Most will forgo the 1,800hp versions and go for the 2,000s that were fitted to our test boat, which are good for a top speed of around 32 knots and a fast cruising speed of anywhere between 22 and 27 knots. With the 1,800s expect to top out at 28 knots and cruise at 24.

Ferretti actually quotes the fast cruising speed as 27 knots and a range of 290nm and, though we weren't able to get a full set of our own figures due to the constraints of testing during a boat show, these numbers did tally up with what we saw on the test. The top speed was just shy of the 32 knots Ferretti quotes but that's understandable given there were about eight other journalists on board plus the boat's crew.

You won't find Ferretti underpowering its boats and much like Sunseeker and Princess, the boats are designed to comfortably top 30 knots, not just reach that speed. Considering the size of this boat the feeling of power and urgency as the throttles surge forward is absolutely remarkable.

Ferretti 860 running

The 860 is fitted with Xenta's fly-by-wire steering system, which returns the rudders to the centre automatically. This feels much like the power steering system in a car and it takes a little getting used to on an 80-tonne flybridge cruiser but once acclimatised it makes the boat feel amazingly responsive and agile for such a large machine. It's not artificially light like IPS, either, so there is a nice weightiness and an appropriate amount of resistance when you swing the hefty metal steering wheel through your hands.

Future Proof

The boat we tested didn't have it but there is a Xenta joystick available which offers a suite of features to make controlling the boat easier at slow speeds. It will combine the props and the proportional bow and stern thrusters to give 'push and twist' control of the boat and, much like Mercury's Skyhook or Volvo's Dynamic Positioning System, it will hold the boat in place using GPS. The X-AID (Adaptive Integrated Docking) system accounts for wind and tidal effects when coming into a berth and automatically holds the boat in place when the joystick is released. Xenta has even developed an autonomous berthing system dubbed X-SELF, which will move the boat in and out of its berth without human intervention and will be available on the 860. It's a technological tour de force from the helm station(s) but at its core, the 860 has the powerful, solid feeling through the water that is expected from Ferretti Yachts.

The Bay of Cannes didn't dish up much in the way of challenges for the 860's hull but it feels incredibly planted and shouldered away any wash we did encounter without batting an eyelid. There is a reassuring depth of engineering throughout the 860 and that solidity makes itself felt out on the water. With its RCD Category A rating (the highest in the EU) the 860 is certified to tackle waves up 4m (13ft) so it should look after you if the swell kicks up.

Design & Build

Ferretti 860 tender garage

Ferretti's design language evolves at a leisurely pace so don't expect anything radical here. These are boats that age well and have a certain timelessness, even if they maybe aren't the most exciting to look at. But compare the 860 to the 850 that it replaces and you'll see some key changes, such as the orientation of the cockpit furniture, the transparent transom and the significant increase in the amount of glass in the superstructure with open gunwales ensuring views out from the main salon isn't compromised. It's evolution, not a revolution, which is a terrible cliché but it's appropriate here.

Solid Foundations

Ferretti has a reputation for quality construction and engineering and though it's difficult to assess that off the back of a quick sea trial during a boat show the 860 certainly feels like a high-quality machine from the gloss and thickness of its mouldings, to its study mooring gear and the finish inside the engine room. You can tell quite a lot by the way an engine room is put together and on top of the finish that is as neat as they come, there are some thoughtful touches that will make the day-to-day running of the boat a bit easier. Things like having fresh water wash down inside the space in case there is a spillage and a light on a reel that can reach and hang in all corners of the engine room so you don't have to rely on the light of an iPhone torch when working in the darker reaches.

Interior Accommodation

Ferretti 860 saloon

The main salon is 27 square metres but it feels larger than that thanks to the vast floor-to-ceiling windows, which fire natural light into the space and deliver wonderful views. The open gunwales bolster the effect and create an unbroken vista out over the water when seated. This area feels more open and relaxed than the 850 thanks to its stylish art deco free-standing furniture and a more contemporary palette that includes two "moods", Classic and Contemporary. The former is a combination of darker woods and warmer colours, the latter more pale, modern and monochrome. Ferretti speaks of a "just like home" concept and the Classic palette of our test boat certainly had a warm and inviting feel.

There are a couple of layout tweaks on offer but the basic layout, with the lounge aft, opposite a simply enormous 75in TV, and dining table forward is fixed. There is the option to have a longer dining table rather than the sqaurer, more informal one on our test boat and the galley can either be left open to the saloon or partitioned off, which is particularly useful if the boat has crew. There are also double sliding doors on the starboard side behind the table, so the salon can be opened up to the elements if guests are dining inside and there is another access point in and out of the main deck. The galley is nicely specified with a domestic fridge/freezer, a Siemens induction hob and an oven and plenty of storage dotted around the place.

Opposite the galley is a day head with a toilet and sink, sensibly located close to the side access door so that guests can easily pop in from the deck space and use the facilities.

Ferretti 860 VIP cabin

Access to the cabins is via a helical staircase opposite the dining table; the forward companionway by the lower helm leads down to the crew accommodation.

Guests are catered for across three cabins: a VIP forward on the starboard side, another double ensuite aft of that and a twin ensuite on the opposite side of the deck. The layout of these cabins is interesting. Because the crew accommodation occupies the forward portion of the deck, the VIP ensuite is located further aft with its bed running across the boat and the bathroom opposite on the port side. It's an irregular layout but it works well and doesn't suffer from the challenging shaping of the space that can come with having the cabin tucked into the point of the bow. The other benefit of this location is that if the boat is on anchor or tied to a buoy overnight, you won't hear the slap of water against the hull that you might get if the cabin is right at the forward end of the deck.

The other guest cabins are spacious and well-endowed with storage plus every cabin being served by its own ensuite means that privacy is excellent.

The owner's cabin is another area where the design has been improved over the 850, specifically the position of the ensuite. On the 850 it was tucked in the corner of the cabin but the 860's runs behind the bed, sharing the full beam of the cabin with a walk-in wardrobe that is accessed on the starboard side of the bed. Not only does this deliver a far more spacious bathroom but it acts as a sound barrier between the cabin and the 4,000hp churning away on the other side of the aft bulkhead. As an option, this cabin can be specified as a cinema room with no bed at all so in this layout the VIP would become the master with two further guest cabins.

The rest of the cabin is as spacious and luxurious as you would expect of an 85ft yacht and it is effortlessly stylish. I particularly like the TV that is cleverly integrated within the mirror on the forward bulkhead.

Helm Station

Ferretti 860 lower helm

Both helms suffer the same fate of being stylish and great to look at but a little compromised when it comes to ergonomics. The dashboard at the lower helm is an imposing structure topped by triple Simrad MFDs that display everything from charting software to boat system information, radar and even the boat's instruction manual. The screens are a fair old stretch from the twin helm seats, though, and a lot of the instruments on the lower dashboard are mounted flat and are therefore pretty tricky to see when seated. Ferretti has always been a bit of a "you should stand to drive a boat" type of shipyard and the dash certainly works much better if you're standing in front of it using the seats to lean against.

The other slight issue here is that because the galley is directly behind the helm station and there is no side door at the helm, the aft view isn't great, so you have to rely on the crew to spot boats coming up behind you and to give the all clear when pulling a hard turn to port.

There are no such issues at the upper helm, though the lack of an effective windscreen does make things a little breezy when the boat is in full gallop. That said, the driving position is better and you sit much closer to the helm with the major controls in easier reach. Having two separate helm seats rather than a bench is a plus, too. It's not perfect but it works.

Ferretti 860 foredeck

The deck spaces on the 860 come together really well and offer three spacious, well-designed living areas. You could have a lot of guests on board this boat and they're going to easily be able to find their own space to relax and soak up the surroundings.

Most boats in this sector have a decent foredeck lounge but the 860's is a great space with extended loungers positioned at the foot of the windscreen and an opposing U-shaped seating area with a table that has pop-up backrests that make it for more comfortable sunbathing. There are fiddles for loose items and cupholders dotted around the area so this really is the place to be if you're in the business of catching rays.

Despite the open gunwales, the side decks feel safe and well-protected thanks to the overhang above and the sheer height of the bulwarks, which came up to around armpit level on me at 6ft (1.83m) tall.

Ferretti isn't the first brand to orientate the cockpit seating along the boat's centerline rather than across it but it's an effective use of space. This arrangement means that half the party don't have to stare back into the boat and the use of glazing in the aft balustrade maintains the connection with the water in the same way the broken gunwales do so inside the salon. The practical stuff is on show, too, like dedicated slots for two boat hooks built into the base of the sofas.

Underneath this deck, there is tender a garage large enough to hold a Williams 395 Sportjet and a two-seater jet-ski. It's a flooding garage so the top hatch opens and then the hydraulic platform drops down to flood the space and aids the launch of tenders and toys.

Flying High

The flybridge feels absolutely vast and part of that is down to the open feel of its aft end. There's no fixed furniture here but the option to fill this space with whatever style of furniture the owner wants. The test boat has a pair of sunloungers, which seemed a sensible enough use of the space. Forward, the imposing hard top offers some shade over the dining table to port and bar opposite. There's a useful split in the dinette table so that guests can get in and out without having to shuffle the entire party off the end of the sofa. The bar is also split between cooking and cooling space and it's a well-specified area that has all the amenities to prep a decent meal on the top deck.

There are three choices of sunroof for the hard top: fixed glass, slatted metal with panels that pivot like a Venetian blind or a fabric roof that opens all the way back. Our test boat had the glass but I reckon the fabric roof offers the most flexibility.

Ferretti 860 stern

Value For Money

Ferretti's are towards the higher end of the sector when it comes to cost but there is a price to pay for the obvious quality of finish and engineering that is on show here. The quality of construction is high and the same can be said for components. As has been covered above, Ferretti doesn't underpower its boats and it takes some serious machinery to make something this large do over 30 knots. There's an argument that some may yearn for a more exciting design for this sort of money but you can bet that this is a design that will age gracefully and hold up strongly on the secondhand market.

Our Options & Pick

We would certainly go for the 2,000hp engines as the cost to upgrade will be a drop in the ocean in the grand scheme of buying this boat. I would also have the Xenta joystick because its suite of clever systems goes so much further than simple joystick control. For the virtual anchor alone it's worth the investment.

There is the option of both gyroscopic and fin stabilisers on the 860. Fins would make the most sense given they work at rest and will likely have a greater effect when the boat is moving. They do add drag, though, and create obstructions beneath the boat that you don't have with a gyro.

Ferretti will never chuck the baby out with the bath water when they design a new model but the soft evolution of the 850 into the 860 has created a boat that is beautifully balanced and will age with grace. The changes that have been made like the cockpit design, enhanced glass area and reorientation of the master cabin improve life on board and that fabled engineering prowess shines through. Then there's the performance, which is smooth, effortless and rampant for a boat of such dimensions. There is a confidence and solidity to the way a Ferretti powers through the water that is hard to describe but it feels like a yacht that will look after you. It says a lot that despite the odd foible at the helm stations the 860 is still a very rewarding boat to drive. Ferretti has a reputation that means its yachts must live up to a high standard and the 860 most certainly does that.

Reasons to Buy

  • Timeless design
  • Big tender garage
  • Four double cabins
  • High quality engineering
  • Gutsy performance

Things to Consider

  • The Ferretti name commands a premium
  • The looks are a little bland
  • Helm station design

There are a lot of very good boats in this sector and they carefully tread the line between being run by crew and owner operated. Let's see what the Ferretti 860 is up against.

The Sanlorenzo SL86 is a seriously high-quality machine and even in a sector where customisation is very much on the agenda, this boat stands out because of just how bespoke it can be for each customer. Short of moving bulkheads, there is an almost endless amount of personalisation on offer, which comes at a cost but will appeal to those who want a boat that feels truly unique. Speaking of uniqueness, there aren't many boats of this size that have an internal staircase to the top deck but the SL86 is one of them and it's a feature that we really like. On the lower deck, there are four cabins with the option to have the third cabin as either a double or a twin and, with the crew space right forward with space for four crew members, there is room aft for a side-loading tender garage - a real superyacht touch. In the engine room, a pair of 1,800hp MTU M96's will propel the SL86 to a top speed of 30 knots and it has a range of 1,150nm at 10 knots.

The Azimut Grande 26 Metri is the baby of Azimut's Grande line but it is packed with interesting features. Its looks nor the whacky Achile Salvagni interior will suit everyone but this pod drive, 5-cabin near 30-knot cruiser certainly puts a cat amongst the pigeons. It's slightly shorter in length than the Ferretti but it packs in five cabins, including a full-width main deck owner's cabin on the main deck and three doubles and a twin on the lower deck, all of which are ensuite. It's a clever feat of packaging and there is more because Azimut has even found a way of including a tender garage at the aft end of the lower deck and sizeable crew quarters at the forward end. The innovation continues below the waterline where the 26 Metri uses fixed ZF pod drives linked to MAN V12 1,550hp or 1,650hp engines for a top speed of 30 knots. The YachtBuyer test team have sea-trialled this boat and can attest that its performance out on the water is one of its most impressive attributes. Its design is more decisive than the Ferretti's but it's an impressive package.

The Sirena 88 is another rival that is shorter than the Ferretti but packs an awful lot into its voluminous interior. It also has serious long-distance cruising potential thanks to its semi-displacement Germán Frers hull and a fuel capacity of 11,000 litres as standard or 16,500 litres as an option. The upshot is that with twin MAN V12 1,550hp engines the 88 will top out at 25 knots but cover over 2,000nm at a cruising speed of 9 knots. Like the Azimut above the Sirena has five guest cabins with a main deck master, though this once includes the added luxury of a drop-down balcony. Aft, the tender stows inside a deep garage that, with the tender out of the way, transforms into a beach club with a dinette and lounging area that lead straight out onto the bathing platform. The interior, by Cor D. Rover in the Netherlands, is warm and luxurious and doesn't follow the clean-edged minimalist trend of its Italian rivals. It feels like a bit of old-school luxury and all the better for it. If the intention is to cover lots of miles and live on board for extended periods this is a great option.

The 860 directly replaces the 850 and it's always interesting to see what a new model brings to the market when it replaces an old one. The 860 isn't much bigger than the boat it replaces but it's a great indicator of how far boat design comes in just a few years. There is so much more unbroken glass aboard the 860 so the views out of the main deck and the amount of light allowed in are much improved. The cut-outs in the bulwarks are an obvious design change on the exterior but they also do a great job of maintaining the views out over the water. One key difference is that the owner's cabin's ensuite is no longer tucked in a cramped corner but instead runs behind the bed to both create more space for the bathroom and add another layer of insulation from the engine room, which is just behind the aft bulkhead.
