3-day Weekend Getaway Cruises to the San Juan Islands

These trips leave Friday morning and return on Sunday evening. We leave Bellingham around 9am and can be in the San Juan Islands in time for a beach walk or short kayak paddle before dinner. We anchor in a different location each night. Enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, and kayaking, as well as a good night’s rest in one of our cabins with comfortable queen-sized beds and private heads. 4-day San Juan Island Escapes

These cruises are longer and give you more time to explore the San Juan Islands. They leave out of Bellingham at 9am on Thursday morning and return on Sunday around 5pm. We offer 4-day cruises on our schedule, but we also welcome custom and private cruises that are for as long as you like.

We take our time cruising at about 7 knots to each night’s destination. Along the way we will make stops for hiking, tide pooling or shopping at one of the many small towns that make up the charming character of the San Juans. As with all of our cruises, your vacation includes all meals cooked by Christine on her wood cook-stove. Guided Kayak Mothership Cruises (By Special Arrangement)

Let the David B be your base camp. On our guided kayak tours you’ll explore a new area each day. In the mornings, you’ll be guided on an easy paddle of 1 1/2 to 2 hours before coming back to the boat for lunch and a change of location.  In the mid-afternoon, we’ll re-launch the kayaks for a comfortable paddle before a filling dinner with wine and conversation.

All of the sea kayak equipment, meals and, of course, guides are included. No kayaking experience necessary, the trips are open to adventurous people of all abilities, and because of the small group size (8 passengers max.) we can easily guide guests with different paddling abilities.

New maintenance and refit yard in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Ports Authority and Isla Borinquen LLC have announced the execution of a long-term lease to create San Juan Yacht & Ship , a superyacht maintenance and refit yard at Pier 15 near the Convention Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Project highlights include a 196-metre (645-foot) graving/dry dock, use of the 289-metre (950-foot) outfitting pier and 8 acres of uplands to support a variety of yachts and commercial vessels up to 190 metres (625 feet) in length. The dock has water depths greater than 8.8 metres (29 feet). San Juan Yacht & Ship will also invest in a floating dry dock and mobile trolley system to lift and haul yachts and ships on the property and use the 102,000 square feet of buildings which will be renovated on site.

The $15 million (c. €12.6 million) phase one investment and renovation will be completed over a two-year period, however yachts can begin in-water refit in late 2021 while long term improvements are being completed. Site features will include security, 480v 3 phase power, water, sanitary, and a clean working environment. The improvements will also include upgraded offices, crew quarters, tiki-bar and lounge. Superyachts recently utilised the facility in 2015.

The project is projected to create thousands of jobs over a three-year period including many trades, namely welders, electricians, plumbers and carpenters. San Juan Yacht & Ship is planning to work with Escuela Vocacional Miguel Such and local universities to develop a training and apprenticeship programme modelled after similar programs in Florida. 

The superyacht industry has had a substantial expansion over recent years and yacht builders are seeking additional refit locations, including this prime location in the Caribbean, to meet the needs of superyacht owners that travel the traditional navigational routes from the Caribbean in the winter to the Mediterranean in the summer. The yachting industry is projecting an increase from 5,200 yachts greater than 30 metres (100 feet) in length, to 7,500 in 2030.

ISLA has already been approached by several key yacht builders and refit groups to help establish San Juan Yacht & Ship as a leading shipyard, rivalling those in the Mediterranean and quality superyacht yards in South Florida.

The San Juan Yacht & Ship team includes Ronald Schults, PE of Edgewater Resources LLC , and is recognised as one of the most notable waterfront and marina development experts in the world. Schults shares his combined passion for community development, coastal engineering and sailing to focus on projects that help preserve waterways and sustain the economic growth and vitality of waterfront communities across the US and around the world.

It also includes Ivan Rodriguez, a Puerto Rican native and Baseball Hall of Fame Champion, and Mark Payne, a local Puerto Rican businessman with 20 years’ experience in the San Juan ship refit/marine industries on site. Strategic partners include Buddy Haack, of Berth One Palm Beach, and Debora Radke and Daisy Ortiz Lenit of American Yacht Agents. Ortiz Lenit is a Puerto Rican native, and Radke has brought yachts to San Juan in the past as a yacht agent. Nathan Goodwin of All Points Boats has also committed to providing yacht refit services at San Juan Yacht & Ship. Numerous other yacht refit partners will be announced in the coming weeks. These specialists will bring expertise and training to create local jobs at San Juan Yacht & Ship.

M/V Catalyst is a historic 11-guest (Alaska) or 12-guest (Pacific Northwest) yacht with a warm wood interior that takes guests back to a time when craftsmanship was the rule, not the exception. Common Areas Aboard Catalyst

Aboard this small ship are a bow deck, covered side decks and a covered aft deck, all offering perfect opportunities for wildlife and landscape viewing. A spacious galley and a warm wood-paneled salon, each with a table and two benches, provide gathering space and a place to enjoy the excellent food and company the ship shares.

History Aboard Catalyst

Catalyst’s storied history is part of what makes this ship and her itineraries so appealing. She was the University of Washington’s first oceanographic research vessel. In 1932 Thomas G. Thompson began a personal crusade to establish a school of oceanography at the university. With the help of a $60,000 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, he started both the school and the construction of Catalyst. The Catalyst launched as the most state-of-the-art research vessel of her time. She was completed in June of 1932 and took her maiden cruise through the Inside Passage and across the Gulf of Alaska and served as research ship for scientists and students for many years. During WWII the Navy conscripted the vessel, mounted a machine gun on top of her pilot house and racks of depth charges on her stern. She spent the war years patrolling the Aleutian Islands for Japanese submarines.  

The Catalyst was built to last, constructed of white oak, Alaskan yellow cedar, Douglas fir, teak and Australian ironwood. After the war, the Catalyst was handsomely refit. Over the next 40 years, she was used for everything from delivering mail to mining supplies and being used as a floating dentist’s office. As a floating marine laboratory she won national acclaim; more importantly, she touched the lives of all who knew her and continues to do so today.

In 1984 she was restored to being the passenger ship Catalyst and began operating tours; she has been doing so under our operator partners Pacific Catalyst II , ever since. Refurbishments in 2013 included: rebuilt bulwarks on the starboard and stern; a rebuilt stern; Port Oxford cedar beams to strengthen her frame; a Cabin 5 redesign; and a “stern lift” to put the steering gear below decks and arrange a more comfortable sitting area on the back deck.

Dining Aboard Catalyst

Food is a sacred thing aboard the Catalyst. The philosophy aboard is that food aids and abets the spirit of community on the vessel, nourishing guest (and crew) along with the beauty of the scenery, the activities of the day and the pleasure of each others’ company and life stories.

Food is prepared from fresh, natural ingredients, including produce that is purchased from local Alaskan or San Juan farmers and fishermen. The chef avoids processed foods; using organic, fresh ingredients instead. A sample menu may comprise of: smoked chicken sausage, kale and sweet potato stew and garlic scape pesto spiral biscuits or seared halibut with wild mushroom vinaigrette, brown rice risotto and asparagus. Guests can enjoy local Washington wines and fair-trade, shade-grown coffee from beans that have been roasted locally following their purchase from small co-ops around the world. In this way the Catalyst supports local communities, embracing the idea of eating locally and using green practices whenever possible. Wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary aboard the Catalyst.

Activities Aboard Catalyst

The Catalyst is a perfect base camp for exploration, with daily off-vessel activities offered. Six double sea kayaks and three single sea kayaks are enough for the entire complement of passengers to experience naturalist-led kayak tours. The Catalyst carries a 12-foot aluminum skiff and a 17.5-foot inflatable utility boat to explore up close and ferry guests ashore for hikes. The Catalyst also holds permits to visit specific areas only offered for small groups. Aboard the Catalyst wildlife viewing is primary; watch humpback whales, Dall’s porpoises, sea otters, moose, bears and more from the viewing decks; listen to the whales underwater with the ship’s hydrophone; enjoy the ship’s viewing aquarium and microscope; learn from the presentation projector and two laptop computers, one for navigation, one for digital pictures from the boat’s camera; and use one of the twelve pairs of binoculars for guests.

Cabins & Deck Plan Aboard Catalyst

Catalyst’s classic accommodations include cozy private staterooms. Despite stateroom capacity reaching beyond 11 guests, the Catalyst keeps an intimate feel by only offering bookings for up to 11 guests in Alaska, and up to 12 guests in the Pacific Northwest. Cabin #1 is on the main deck and can be accessed from the main salon. Cabins #2-5 are located below deck and are accessed by steep stairs. Likewise Cabin #6 is on the upper deck and accessed by a steep outside stairway. Cabins #4 and #5 have shared bathrooms while all others have private bathrooms with a sink, toilet and shower en-suite. All cabins have portholes except cabin #6, which has a window. Regular 110-volt electrical outlets are in each cabin. 

Cabin #1 on the Main Deck measures 10’6″ x 6’2″ and features a private bathroom with shower. Double bunk (49″ x 74″) with a single pull-down upper bunk (32″ x 74″). Private door to deck and one opening porthole.

Cabin #2 on the Lower Deck is located on the forward, starboard side, measures 6’10” x 7’0″ and features a full private bathroom with sink, toilet and shower. Double bed (50″ x 78″) with four drawers under bed, hanging closet, storage closet, bookshelf and two non-opening portholes.

Cabin #3 on the Lower Deck is located on the forward, port side, measures 6’10” x 6’6″ and features a full private bathroom with sink, toilet and shower. Double bed (50″ x 78″) with two drawers, storage locker and two non-opening portholes.

Cabin #4 on the Lower Deck is located on the aft, starboard side and measures 6’0″ x 7’0″ less a 4′ x 2’6″ companionway. Single bed (43″ x 84″) with storage under gear hammock and one non-opening porthole. Shared bathroom and shower located across the hall.

Cabin #5 on the Lower Deck is an aft family cabin measuring 13’0″ x 13’0″ and sleeping up to four people. Two single beds (36″ x 77″) and one double bed (50″ x 78″) with two bench seats with storage underneath, six opening portholes and four non-opening portholes. Shared bathroom and shower located across the hall.

Cabin #6 is located on the Upper Deck behind the pilot house and features a private bathroom with shower. Double bed with no bunk (50″ x 78″). Private entry from outside of pilot house; drawers and storage space; bookshelf; opening porthole and windows.

Everything about the Catalyst was perfect. Every kayaking and hiking event was amazing, again, always with information about the geography, natural history, and general history of Alaska. I came home feeling like I had a better understanding of Alaska.

We loved this trip. It was a high point of our life together. The Catalyst was a joy. Its character (beautiful craftsmanship and design) as well as how it traveled and fit so well into the beautiful environment. We felt very close to the ocean, the forests, and the surprising life that we encountered.

I'm really glad that Nick recommended the Catalyst. It was exactly what we hoped for - and more. On a small ship like Catalyst, the experience was very much like being welcomed into the home of our hosts.

We've done a fair amount of travel and have never had a better trip. We wanted to travel with a small group vs a monster cruise. Good travel companions. Small group made it an especially comfortable and friendly environment.

Up close and personal with nature and the animals. Saw so many rare things that few get to see. Very memorable trip. Very secluded adventure, would be only boat anchored or only people on the trail.

World-class vessel, crew, and activities. Exceeded all expectations. I've never met a crew who took it as their mission to make sure the atmosphere was always upbeat and who showed so much care and good will toward their guests.

Everything about the Catalyst was perfect.  Bill, Tracy, Sarah and Rob were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, competent and fun. Tracy is an amazing chef - providing creative, healthy meals with fresh produce brought out to the ship. People should be aware that the space is limited, bathrooms are shared and privacy is scarce. With this group of people there were no problems, everyone was flexible and accommodating. The hiking and kayaking were great - Sarah is a knowledgable naturalist. I enjoyed spending time in the wheel house, learning about navigation, weather, and the history of Alaska. Every kayaking and hiking event was amazing, again, always with information about the  geography, natural history, and general history of Alaska. I came home feeling like I had a better understanding of Alaska. Every meal was outstanding, and this group was very cohesive - there was always laughter and enjoyment of each other's company. Nightly entertainment was provided by the crew in the form of readings, music, slideshows.

Accommodations Review

Accommodations were clean, warm and dry. People just need to be aware going into it that space is limited, bathrooms are shared and if privacy is important this probably isn't the trip for them.

I liked everything. No improvements. It couldn't have been better.  Creative meals with healthy ingredients.

Crew & Guides Review

Bill - the captain - knowledgable, friendly, competent, safety conscious, a great teacher, fun to interact with, great sense of humor,  enthusiastic about the voyage and his ship. Tracy - an amazing chef - creative, focused on good nutrition and use of healthy alternatives to provide incredible meals. Also friendly, helpful, a good musician, provided great after dinner entertainment. Rob - engineer- helpful, friendly, shared his knowledge about the engine and the ship, always willing to help with getting towels and clothes hung up to dry in the engine room, shared his knowledge of engines, sailing, wildlife. Sarah - what an impressive young woman. Very knowledgeable about Alaska, flora and fauna, great and supportive kayaker. She is creative, enthusiastic, shared her art work and created take home CD with pictures, slide show, hand drawn details on maps of where we had been. She is an incredible artist. All of the staff were warm and friendly, created a family atmosphere  with a lot of energy and laughter.

Be open, flexible, have a sense of adventure and a sense of humor.

We loved this trip. It was a high point of our life together. Traveling the Stephens Passage was amazing. On the 28th (my birthday no less) we saw more than 40 humpback whales, and porpoises played back and forth under the bow as we traveled. The glacier close up as it calved was unforgettable, and the bears at Pack Creek...  It's hard to rank experiences like these or treat them as separate from each other. Each day had special moments.

The Catalyst was a joy. Its character (beautiful craftsmanship and design) as well as how it traveled and fit so well into the beautiful environment. We felt very close to the ocean, the forests, and the surprising life that we encountered. We loved especially how well everything worked physically. We slept well in the room and enjoyed the shower.

Michael's cooking was amazing.  Please try to keep him on.

Paul and Christa were especially fine leaders. Jimmy was outstanding too, a joy to be around.

• Alaska's Eastern Passages

On a small ship like Catalyst, the experience was very much like being welcomed into the home of our hosts - Paul, Sarah, Shane, and Michael. We had the good fortune to be able to dine with them at meals and join them in the pilot house or the kitchen. Captain Paul had an eagle eye for wildlife, and we changed course and often stopped the boat so that we could watch whales, dolphins, bears, moose, and a wolf.

We wanted to go on an Alaska cruise, and after doing some research, we knew that the big cruise ship experience wasn't for us. We are active people, and we participate in outdoor activities, so we were looking for something that would allow us to paddle and hike. We knew that we would visit some of the towns in Alaska, so we weren't really interested in cruises that took a day or two visiting ports along the route. Adventure Smith's collection of small ship cruised helped to put all of the options in one place, and after speaking with Nick, his suggestion of the Catalyst proved to be right on the mark.

Cabin was small, but we knew this when we booked, and it worked well. Overall quality of the vessel was exceptional. We had enough space that we could choose to engage with others, or just sit quietly.

The food on Catalyst was exceptional. Fresh produce from a local farm, an herb garden in containers on the top deck of the boat, and berries picked on our hikes as a garnish for meals and deserts were just some of the features. Chef Michael was a real treat! Meals were healthy, imaginative, well portioned, and very tasty. The only thing I would have liked, as an early riser, is some type of self-serve breakfast (granola or a muffin) that I could eat when I got up, rather than having to wait for breakfast. Juice would also have been a welcome addition to breakfast.

We were glad to put ourselves in their hands and enjoy the experience. The crew had a really good sense of where we should go each day - keeping in mind tides, currents, and weather. Sarah, our naturalist, was knowledgeable, personable, and really keen for all of us to have an excellent experience. Captain Paul was also knowledgeable, personable, and eager to share his experiences with us, as well as answer any questions we had. Shane, the engineer, knew every inch of his boat. He was also a delight to have on shore or kayak expeditions.

Good selection of cruises, good advice, and the carbon-free cruising program. I got questions answered promptly and thoroughly.

I'm really glad that Nick recommended the Catalyst. It was exactly what we hoped for - and more. I don't think that I would have found this option without Nick's input. We also value AdventureSmith's carbon-free cruising program.

Come prepared to enjoy whatever you see and experience, and make sure you have lots of layers of clothing so that you can enjoy sitting outdoors during the cruise.

The only thing I wish I had known about before I booked was the tipping requirement. I know it's not supposed to be a "requirement", but it seems to be expected. Because we were at the top of our price range when we booked, the need to tip put us over budget. We aren't experienced cruisers (this was the first time we had ever been on a cruise) so it wasn't something we knew about.

We've done a fair amount of travel and have never had a better trip. We had never visited Alaska and wanted to see at least a small part of it. We wanted to travel with a small group vs a monster cruise. We prefer active trips rather than sightseeing, so the hiking and kayaking were exactly what we wanted. Kayaking Ford's Terror in the rain [was an] engaging activity in a peaceful and beautiful setting. Campfire/dinner on the beach at The Brothers was unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable evening on shore whale watching and wildlife viewing everywhere. Crew did a great job of spotting and allowing opportunities to view a wide variety of wildlife. Low-tide hike/excursion at Wood Spit was difficult footing in places was really the only negative. Good travel companions. Small group made it an especially comfortable and friendly environment. 

Individual cabins were admittedly very small, but the Catalyst was more comfortable and accommodating than we expected. The addition of the private head in our cabin was an unexpected plus. We loved the boat!

Paul, Shane, Caroline, Michael and new trainee, Jimmy, made a wonderful team. Always professional, yet very personable and engaging as individuals. Constantly interacting with guests. Paul was great at spotting wildlife, getting the boat in the best position and allowing us to linger and watch. Caroline was always enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable about all things animal, plant, and other. Shane never failed to entertain and demonstrate/explain the running of the boat. 

Andrew provided complete/thorough information. We felt very prepared. 

Meals prepared by Michael - delicious, beautiful presentation, varied and always interesting. No room for improvement.

Be flexible.  Leave expectations at home and just enjoy what comes. We did decide that headlamps/flashlights are not necessary in Alaska in June.

Great experience. Up close and personal with nature and the animals. Saw so many rare things that few get to see. Very memorable trip. Very secluded adventure, would be only boat anchored or only people on the trail. Learned so much about nature and animals. Very friendly, interesting group to be with, everyone got along.

World-class vessel, crew, and activities. Exceeded all expectations. I've never met a crew who took it as their mission to make sure the atmosphere was always upbeat and who showed so much care and good will toward their guests. They did everything in their powers to make our wishes for a wonderful trip come true. It went way beyond a job for them, they were genuinely heartfelt souls. With 8 sunny days we achieved all our goals for seeing Alaska and its wildlife. It was mind-blowing! I'd spent decades traveling in Africa and needed a new challenge. Alaska was it.

It was an honor to be on such a historic and beautiful vessel.

The food had flavors I've never tasted before which is great. The red wines and that final port were especially great, but all the wines were very good and obviously specially selected. Thank you.

The two captains were stellar. They worked very, very hard to find the wildlife we'd come to see and to make our way thru some pretty challenging channels/canyons. Our guide/naturalist was a great educator and lovely person. We were blessed to have this crew. It will be a sad day when the Catalyst is sold. The current owners and crew will be sorely missed.

Make sure you bring the proper clothing for rain and cold as recommended.

Itinerary Review

[I most enjoyed] Humpback whales bubble netting and calling, Orcas, Dall's porpoise, brown bears at Pack Creek, ice fields and glacier calving, Ford's Terror, kayaking, sitting on the bow and watching the mountains/ice/snow, experiencing what it is like to enter into the rainforest that is like being inside a fantastical new world. This was my first trip to Alaska so it was all amazing.

[I least enjoyed] Entirely due to the weakened condition of my knee replacement, I found one of the hikes very challenging. I only mention this because the crew should be especially commended for their recognizing the hiking limitations of some in our group, adjusting their hiking plans accordingly, and demonstrating enormous amounts of patience and kindness toward us. This crew has great heart.

The literature you provided for trip planning was perfect. I had everything I needed to book my flights and hotels. Taylor took great care of me. AdventureSmith has a good selection of trips.
