Reviewed: Sirena Yachts 78

The Sirena Yachts 78 treads a fine line between modern and traditional. The yacht’s square stem, superstructure glazing and rectangular hull windows mark this model as thoroughly modern. Yet the curves and sweeps of the sheer, coachroof and transom, and the deep bulwarks, suggest something more timeless.

In many respects, this design is defined by what owners will want to do with the upper deck. The Sirena 78 is highly flexible in that regard. It can be specified with a conventional open flybridge—with or without a hardtop—in which case access is via stairs from the cockpit. Or, two-thirds of the upper deck can be partially or fully enclosed, with a second stairway from the main salon. With the space fully enclosed, this yacht effectively becomes a mini trideck with a sky lounge.

The first 78, which I got aboard, has the semi-enclosed setup. For many owners, this will be the best of both worlds. The choice will largely depend on how much time an owner prefers to spend in the air conditioning; the outdoor spaces are great for fresh air, with a full upper-deck overhang that protects the cockpit and side decks. The bow terrace has a sun bed immediately forward of the bridge windows, with a pair of sofas and pedestal tables beyond.

In the main salon, there’s a super-size lounge to port and an island galley amidships with a dining area forward of there. The main deck on Hull No. 1 has an open floor plan, and all I could see from there were the views beyond. That panorama is spectacular. Save for a fridge-freezer and some cabinetry in the galley, the vistas are virtually uninterrupted. There’s no lower helm to get in the way, either, although for those who prefer some segmentation, an enclosed galley is possible.

Like its sisterships, the Sirena 78’s interior design is by Cor D. Rover in the Netherlands. Three contemporary schemes are offered: Inspiration, Serenity and Elegance. Hull No. 1 has Inspiration, which provides a calm ambience with light-oak veneers. The Serenity scheme is a little richer and warmer, while the Elegance vibe is darker and more traditional.

Belowdecks are four en suite staterooms, all connected via a centerline corridor. The owner’s stateroom is amidships, occupies the full 21-foot-4-inch beam, has full-width hull windows on either side, and has a forward-facing king berth on centerline. His-and-hers heads are connected by a central shower stall, with the whole space serving as a sound barrier between the sleeping area and engine room. Alternatively, owners can trade one of the heads for a walk-in closet.

To me, the VIP is the nicest stateroom aboard. Tucked into the bow, it has an asymmetrical layout with an inboard-facing double berth to port that’s set at a transverse angle of around 30 degrees, which means it gets a proper view out the starboard-side window. A lounge here will make a great reading nook.

In between the master and VIP are two twin-berth guest staterooms. The starboard one shares its facilities as the day head.

The transom conceals quarters for three crew, although I think two crew would be sufficient for most uses. Owners can select single- or double-berth layouts. The nearby hydraulic platform will accommodate a 14-foot tender.

Hull No. 1 of the Sirena 78 has 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels on V-drives—neither the biggest nor the smallest motors available with this model. Other choices are twin 1,400 hp or twin 1,800 hp MANs, which the builder says produce top speeds of 24 and 29 knots, respectively. When we went out to sea with 50 percent fuel, 60 percent water and about 30 people, the yacht topped out just north of 25 knots.

The 78’s semidisplacement hull is all new for this model, but in terms of shape, it’s an evolution of the smaller and bigger Germán Frers-drawn Sirenas, which always perform predictably. The props spin in half-tunnels, and there is such a smooth delivery of power that it can be deceptive just how quickly you are cruising.

Underway, I found the steering a little heavy and the handling rather sprightly. Humphree electric-fin stabilizers were engaged the entire time, leaving very little heel in even the tightest turns. Gyrostabilization is an option.

With the V-12s spinning at 1,000 rpm, the yacht registered a slow chug, just shy of 10 knots. Allowing for a 10 percent reserve, that means a working range of around 1,200 nautical miles and a consistent fuel burn of 1.7 gallons per nautical mile. Double things up to 2,000 rpm, and the maximum speed will be around 21 knots, with fuel burn a little over 55 gallons per nautical mile and a working range of 400 nm.

At least the first four Sirena 78s are already sold: two with semi-enclosed flybridges, one fully enclosed and one with an open fly. Clearly, the flexibility of this model is one of its highlights.

On the Rise

Sirena Yachts in Turkey was founded in 2006. Having built smaller motoryacht models for Azimut in its earliest days, as well as various sailboat ranges of its own, the yard has been building under the Sirena brand for six years. It offers a range of composite models from Argentinian yacht designer Germán Frers. Already there are around 100 Sirenas in service worldwide.

Sirena Yachts is preparing to enter the alloy superyacht market. The yard has developed three trideck platforms: the 115-foot Sirena 35-Meter, 138-foot 42-Meter and 164-foot 50-Meter, all based on fast-displacement hulls developed by Van Oossanen in the Netherlands. These yachts will be offered with Van Oossanen’s Hull Vane technology, and with conventional or hybrid propulsion. Exterior styling is by Italian designer Luca Vallebona, with owner’s-choice interiors. A new production site in Yalova, south of Istanbul, is being  constructed to build these steel-aluminum designs. The first 50-Meter hull should start this year.

Origin Story

The first Sirena 56/58 and Sirena 64 paved the way for the brand in 2017. These models have since been joined by the new-in-2021 Sirena 68 and the 3-year-old and present flagship, the Sirena 88. This latest Sirena 78 adds to the lineup.

Sirena CEO shares exclusive insight into the brand-new Sirena 78

Less than two months after Sirena Yachts presented its new and creative 25 metre model – the Sirena 78 – the builder had already secured three orders. These orders make up just some of the busy Turkish builder’s order book, which sees all models sold out until 2024 and beyond.

Sirena’s success can be partly attributed to the brand’s long-standing relationship with leading designers such as the Sirena 78’s exterior design studio Frers Naval Architecture and interior designer Cor D. Rover, who have collectively packed the new yacht with distinct characteristics that set her apart from the competition.

To find out why the Sirena 78 is flying off the shelf, Sirena Yachts’ CEO, Çağın Genç, shares more details about the new pocket superyacht and its position in the market.

What brought you to the decision to create the Sirena 78?

First and foremost, there was a size gap in our range between the Sirena 68 and the Sirena 88. We regularly keep in touch with our existing owners, and some felt that the Sirena 88 was too big and the Sirena 68 was too small. It is thanks to this feedback that the concept for the Sirena 78 began.

And how did you decide on her range of features?

Sirena is well-represented in the United States and we have a great network of dealers there. At the moment, more than 50 per cent of our sales are delivered to the US and so these dealers have a great insight into our client base. They were the ones who gave us the idea to include the main-deck island kitchen. This galley doubles as another entertainment space with a large central island, long countertops, a deep sink and full-size appliances. These are the type of features that are favoured by our American owners, as is the dedicated owner’s area on the main deck. This, along with the idea to have the option to have an enclosed flybridge, was fundamental to the design and we continued to innovate from there.

Would you say that the Sirena 78 is solely tailored to the US market? Or can this design go global?

The actual configuration of the Sirena 78 is all about flexibility and customisation, so she can be tailored to suit any owner anywhere in the world. We offer both a traditional open flybridge design and a semi-enclosed one, in addition to the fully-enclosed design. One defining feature of the Sirena 78 is the high-volume layout, which is something an owner can fully customise including the main deck layout and the location of the driving dashboard.

What is the motive behind Sirena’s strategy and move into Asia? Can you share more about Sirena’s strategy to get up and running in Asia?

The Asian market tends to veer towards day boats and so we are finalising how to alter the design of the 78 further to suit this market.

We want to be global. But we will achieve this slowly, step by step. Ever since launching our first boat in 2017, we have become well-known and established in the US and Europe, and so it is reassuring to have secured approval from these markets so we can move on to the next.

Who are your clients for the three sold Sirena 78s?

One of the happy owners is upgrading from an original Sirena 64 that was purchased from us three years ago. Since then, this model was updated and rebranded as the Sirena 68. The family are Turkish and love to cook, so when they first saw the Sirena 78 and her huge galley, they fell in love.

Keeping in touch with our customers is a big part of the business, especially as they are all granted a two-year warranty with each boat. And we love to have repeat customers, it feels like the brand has found its niche and customers like you for it.

What does the future look like for Sirena?

As we announced during the Monaco Yacht Show, we have just launched our superyacht range which is already a great asset for us. Our workforce of over 1,000 employees is essential to making these kinds of developments work – especially as we look to double our capacity next year once we find a new facility. Now we are full!

We are one of the top players in our field, and things are going well for the yard at the moment – I think the same goes for pretty much every superyacht builder at this time, which is great to see.

Adding an enclosed flybridge, taking away a helm station and doubling up on salons, the Sirena 78 is an exciting calculation in modern yacht design.

Bridging the gap between the excellent four-cabin 68 and award-winning 88 flagship, the Sirena 78 is undoubtedly an important model in this modern trawler range, but with so many outstanding siblings around it, what can this still four-cabin cruiser bring to market? Well, for a start it comes with Sirena’s first enclosed flybridge. But that is just the start of the story.

Performance & Handling

The German Frer designs that run across the Sirena range are all about relaxed passage-making backed up by a proper turn of speed and the kind of confidence that comes from RCD Catergory A classification. 

Naval architecture is fairly true to traditional semi-displacement form, featuring a sharp entry to cut through the chop, some fuller sections as you move aft to create the lift for planing speeds and a keel for stability. Frers adds rounded sections to the chine for a softer ride, the addition of a stabiliser and, as with the test boat, Humphree Interceptor tabs help to keep the boat stable.

The test boat also came with the larger 1,550hp MAN V12 engines, an option that pushes the Sirena 78 towards 25 knots but more importantly creates the power and scope for useful 20-knot cruising.

From the Helm

I would probably struggle to describe our late evening run out of Cannes as a full sea trial but it did show me enough of the boat’s handling credentials to know this is a good cruising yacht.

Loaded with way more people than any owner would sensibly entertain, we managed to hit 24 knots, the boat responding well to the helm and always feeling poised. 

At a ludicrously laid-back 15 knots, we recorded 34g/hr (130l/hr) per engine, giving the yacht an easy 500nm range that pretty much continues up to 20 knots. Drop the speed back to around 10-12 knots and the range stretches out past 1,000nm with Sirena claiming a maximum of around 1,500nm at 10 knots.

What will linger longest in the memory from my time at the wheel is the feeling of steadfast ability. The Sirena 78 feels like it will push through anything. There is solid, no-nonsense feedback through the hull and steering and whilst there wasn’t anything in the vicinity to even remotely prove this theory it is one I am happy to stand by, underwritten by that RCD Cat A insurance.

The visibility from the upper deck’s helm is exceptional if you’re standing up, with a clear view down to the stern quarters and a 360-degree unobstructed seascape. For such a statesmanlike ride, the helm station does feel a little lightweight with its discreet design and a single helm chair that needs some extra thinking for a good seated position.

Design & Build

Sirena and German Frers are the design disruptors of the motor yacht market. Designs go their own way, and, for a comparatively new brand, have created a recognised look and onboard culture that few more established names have managed.

So much of the Sirena character is about striking exterior design and impressive interior space. The 78 delivers both. Frers high-volume semi-displacement hull delivers a 21ft (6.5m) beam, that’s 12in more than many yachts in this class, nearer 2ft more than some, and you really feel it onboard - although it is still only the usual four-cabin layout, plus a proper crew quarters aft.

The exterior design is typically modern and clean. The trawler yacht association is more about excellent function and cruising practicalities than form, the refined topsides starting with a sharp vertical bow that flows aft with linear confidence. 

The superstructure appears to be made entirely from glass, with discreet structural posts merging with heavily tinted windows. Unlike some other enclosed flys of similar size, the Sirena’s upper deck does not look too tall or ungainly, its dimensions suitably lower and more understated than the main deck.

The Luxury of Choice

The 78 is the first model to offer the choice of a fully or semi-enclosed flybridge, as well as a conventional open deck - even the flagship 88 offers no enclosed flybridge option. 

This large yacht device creates an upper lounge, with a sunroof and electric side screens opening things up so you never feel too shut off. It also creates options below on the main deck. For semi and enclosed boats, Sirena has done away with the lower helm so you win a long sweep of salon that pushes right up to the elegantly curved forward windscreen. 

Like the Princess X80, another enclosed fly design, the galley and dining area sits in this new-found forward space. Unlike the X80, Sirena does not offer the option of switching this galley for a main deck owner’s stateroom, something that feels like a miss, given nearly every X80 buyer has chosen the stateroom option.

Interior Accommodation

While the upper deck on the 78 is the big news, the main deck is still the big space. Lined by glass and pushing right up to the rounded forward screens, the deck salon starts with a relaxed lounge, dotted with refined beach-club style free-standing furniture, but works in plenty of cabinet space for storage. 

The aft lounge sweeps forward to what must be the biggest and most impressive galley under 30m. The test boat came with the island option, with a massive slab of worktop sitting centrally and housing the cooking station with a bank of extractors worked into the counter. That leaves space for a wall of cold storage, with full-height refrigeration and deep freezers, and another worktop and cleaning station with a dishwasher and deep lockers. The design creates enough storage for a month of supplies. 

The option, theoretically for a more crew-focused operation, is a more traditional U-shape galley pushing out from the port side. This will allow cooking to happen behind closed doors but still leaves the forward section open for dining.

The semi and fully-enclosed yachts have two sets of salon stairs, one up to the flybridge, the other down to the cabins. The open version only has one set down; we don’t really understand why? 

Even on the fully enclosed model, the flybridge still feels like a deck and that is where we will look at it properly. First, let’s move down below and to a full-beam owner’s stateroom that is clearly enjoying all of this Sirena’s 21ft width.

All Below 

The owner’s ensuite runs amidships, insulating the cabin from the engine bay beyond, and can be delivered in the full-beam his-and-hers style on the test yacht or sharing its width with a walk-in style closet. The closet option frees up storage and cabinetry space in the cabin for an extra lounge but on both layouts, you have a study-come-dressing table.  

The stateroom has such an easy, relaxed style, flanked by hull-side glass, a dressing table and lounge. The cabin is the perfect place to consider the three trim levels on offer. The test boat came with the Inspiration finish, full of light fabrics and grey tonal cabinetry. At the other end of the spectrum is the more masculine Elegance, with contrasting dark woods and white leathers, that we saw on the Sirena 88 review. In between is Serenity, an interesting mix of warm woods and leathers that I would, personally, like to see very much. 

The companionway forward has two ensuite twin cabins with the forward VIP using the hard-working offset berth design to good effect, creating a full-beam feel.

Helm Station

The neat, tidy and discreet upper helm station sits over to starboard, with an optional docking station to port on the aft deck. It is a minimal design, intended not to interfere with the business of deck lifestyle, but it is the only helm and so it really needs to be more serious about its status. As a 1,500nm yacht, a chart area and the ability to screen itself off for night passages feels a basic right. The optional adjustable helm seat is a must. 

We have to start up on the flybridge, with its various states of enclosure. Sirena says the semi-enclosed option is proving popular, possibly because you win both the feel of an upper deck lounge and one that is allowed to open onto the aft deck completely. But the optional doors, folding right back to each side, wouldn’t get in the way very much and would allow you the luxury of complete enclosure and climate control. Perhaps the extra €100,000 the doors cost puts people off?

In both semi and enclosed versions, you win electrically operated drop-down side windows and a sunroof, adding yet more versatility. With the teak deck and free-standing beach-club-style furniture the mix of deck lifestyle and luxury lounge is near perfect - the furniture on the test boat is designed to pull out and form various social layouts.

Simply Good

The overall design of the flybridge is fairly understated. The smaller Sirena 68’s flybridge works incredibly hard to deliver its wonderfully sociable lounge and bar layout. The 78 has more space to play with and seems less concerned with being clever, and happy to just lay on the various features. The bar is barely noticeable up by the helm and the open aft deck is clean and clear for loungers. In keeping with this boat’s culinary focus, between the lounge and deck lies a very well-appointed wet bar and grill that begs for frequent barbecues.

One thing that impresses on every Sirena I have seen (and I think I've seen them all) is the level of finish across the decks. Teak may be a dwindling resource, but not in Turkey it seems. Rich warm wood adorns every inch of the deck, from smooth borders to the aft deck seating to the magnificent cappings along the deep wide side decks. Along with chunky, large gauge stainless steel, it all adds a very real level of nautical tradition to these modern vessels. 

The aft deck is accessed up two sets of steps up from the hydraulic platform. The platform can take up to 800kg and is the main access point for the crew quarters.

The aft deck lounge flows nicely on from the salon, with a useful wet bar lying between. The side decks, with full overhangs and lighting, lead to a foredeck lounge that would be the main highlight on almost any other 25m yacht. Incredibly broad, it has two separate L-shape lounges forward, looking aft onto a massive sun pad. A perfect in-port retreat, the foredeck comes with smart bar tables and plenty of cold storage.  

Value For Money

It seems fitting that, as serious cruising yachts, Sirenas are also easy boats to navigate when it comes to options. There are gradual, €100,000, increments up from open, to semi-enclosed and on to fully enclosed flybridge models. The three interior finishes come with no cost penalty and Sirena is happy to work with buyers to create a more personal yacht.

The uprated 1,550hp MAN V12s worked well but so will the standard 1,400hp engines, with the 78’s relaxed 10-15 knots cruising and 1,500nm range both assured. The 1,800hp option and its extra couple of knots doesn't seem a must-have for this kind of yacht, you will need to add a hefty stabiliser cost, but that goes for every other boat too. 

They’re are some easy wins for the 78, it is noticeably bigger than the 68 and usefully less money than the 88. It also has the option of that enclosed flybridge, a first for Sirena. A 1,500nm range and solid seakeeping add to the feel of a liveaboard yacht designed for serious cruising, even if the helm needs a few easy fixes. The 78 has few rivals on size and specification, although, the decision not to offer a main deck stateroom option might be an issue. The 78’s biggest challenge may well come from within. If you don’t want to enclose the fly, the excellent 68 can deliver four cabins and enjoys one of those designs that just seems to hang together superbly well, while the five or six cabin 88 is on a completely different level to pretty much every other boat around 25m.

There is a growing crop of next-generation designs that mix flybridge, trawler and, quite often, something unique into one very usable serious cruising yacht.

The Sirena’s own mix of space, unapologetically modernist design and cruising performance is matched by the Princess X80 which adds the option of a five-cabin layout with a spectacular main deck owner’s stateroom at the expense of a forward kitchen and dining area. The X80’s interior design is a masterclass with a superb main salon and galley. It also has an enclosed upper lounge that includes the sole but very impressive helm station where the yacht’s 30-knot performance can be enjoyed.

If trawler style is your thing, the Azimut Magellano 25M delivers a more respectful, charm-laden but still modern interpretation. The pilothouse design reflects the serious cruising credentials of the yacht, as does a 1,000nm range. The pilothouse also allows the main deck salon to push right forward with a galley up towards the bows. Below decks, four spacious ensuite cabins will look after eight people. The design also sets the crew forward so there’s space for a tender garage aft. 

Reflecting contemporary flybridge design the Australian way, the big, powerful Riviera 78 Motor Yacht is available with an enclosed flybridge. Its 10,000 US gal (38,000-litre) fuel tanks and capable hull will push past 34 knots but also reach 2,500nm at 7 knots.

If an enclosed fly isn’t a priority then you must look at the Absolute Navetta 75 , a similarly modern take on the trawler yacht that feels as big as the 78 and comes with two excellent staterooms and a vast upper deck.

A Closer Look

The Sirena 48 takes the luxury of choice to a new level for a yacht in this size range. The design offers deck space and creative use of its hull volume to offer comfort for a large group of guests for a day cruise, while the accommodations can readily welcome family and friends for an extended cruise.

The hull design creates the same luxury of choice, with available speeds offering a bracing cruise to a secluded cove for exploring and a swim, and a prompt return to port, while an efficient slow cruise makes longer voyaging across blue water a welcome respite from the concerns of daily life.

Never resting on past successes, Sirena Yachts has turned its creative powers to the idea of creating an efficient cruiser using hybrid propulsion to drive the hull at a variety of speeds. The time to adapt serial hybrid propulsion to cruising yachts is upon us, since we all need to strive to reduce our carbon emissions, and lighter electric motors and batteries are creating greater range opportunities for yachts equipped with hybrid systems.

Sirena has stayed true to its well-found yacht-building tenets, and delivers a distinctive design in a hardtop version of the Sirena 48 launched last year. The hardtop profile creates less windage and offers a lower center of gravity than the flybridge version.

The popular SIRENA 58 rides on a super-efficient, dual-mode hull designed by revered naval architect, German Frers. Built to Category A standards, she is available in 2-cabin and 3-cabin lower deck layouts, including the award-winning twin master arrangement with the forward master featuring direct access to the foredeck.

The flybridge deck is the largest and most functional in its size class, while the carbon fiber superstructure affords SIRENA 58 a very low center of gravity for superior comfort and seakeeping.

Sharing a common hull with her SIRENA 58 sibling, the SIRENA 58 Coupe was specifically conceived to seamlessly blend interior with exterior spaces. Space and volume throughout is class-leading. The sleek exterior lines are elegant yet purposeful, featuring a low air draft allowing the SIRENA 58 Coupe to clear most all bridges.

The expansive cockpit space is unrivaled in space and comfort, while the adjacent galley spans across from port to starboard.

The new 68 is built on a hull that marries efficiency and performance seamlessly. The hull shape encapsulates a cavernous volume of space, allowing everyone onboard to spread out and get comfortable, but still be together.

The interior is a special kind of intersection where craftsmanship meets utility, elevating every aspect of the space to make it feel welcoming, comfortable, and human size..

The Sirena 78 offers creative enhancements that signal an even more rapid evolution of design and innovation to improve the on-the-water experience. She effectively advances the idea of the cruising yacht by delivering a combination of interior comfort and a wide range of efficient performance.

Mytishchi is a mid-sized industrial city in North Moscow Oblast , which borders Moscow to the southwest. It is perhaps Moscow Oblast 's principal industrial center, particularly for machinery and armaments.

A convenient elektrichka route (in fact, the first elektrichka route in Russia) runs frequently all day between Mytishchi and Moscow's Yaroslavsky Train Station. Rapid trains (Sputniks) bound to Pushkino and Bolshevo also stop here.

You can also get here pretty easily by taking the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya metro line to the end at Medvedkovo and there catch a bus or marshrutka to the Mytishchi center from the metro station.
