Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Bristol 29.9

'How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat', an eBook by Dick McClary

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of just 14.9 suggests that she'll need a stiff breeze to get her going. In any other conditions, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands, motor-sailing will be the way to go.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 41.6 means that she'll stand up well to her canvas in a blow, enabling her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 279, tells us she's clearly a heavy displacement cruising boat. You can load her down with all your cruising gear and equipment and it will hardly affect her waterline. Not an ideal choice for coastal sailing, but will come into her own on an offshore passage in testing conditions.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 23.6 suggests that crew comfort in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a moderate offshore cruising boat - most seasoned sailors can handle that.

5. Her Capsize Screening Formula (CSR) of 2.0 tells us that she would be a better choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSR rating of more than 2.0 - but with the CSR being right on the cusp, it's marginal.

More about the Bristol 29.9...

The Bristol 29.9 is a classic American sailboat that was designed by Halsey Chase Herreshoff, a renowned naval architect and grandson of the legendary Nathanael Herreshoff. The boat was first built in 1977 by Bristol Yachts in Rhode Island and was intended as a racer-cruiser that could compete in the Midget Offshore Racing Class (MORC) and the International Offshore Rule (IOR) . The boat was also designed to be comfortable and seaworthy for coastal cruising and weekend sailing. The Bristol 29.9 is a well-built and elegant boat that has a loyal following among owners and admirers.

Bristol 29.9 Layout Plan

Accommodation The Bristol 29.9 has a spacious and cozy interior that can sleep up to six people. The boat has two factory cabin layouts that were available, differing in the galley location. In one layout, the galley is located on the port side of the main cabin, opposite the dinette settee that converts into a double berth. In the other layout, the galley is located aft on the starboard side, next to the navigation station and the quarter berth. The boat has plenty of storage space in lockers, drawers, and shelves throughout the cabin. There are ten cabin ports, four of which open. The boat also has an electrical system with 12-volt lighting and outlets, as well as shore power connection and battery charger.

Hull and Deck The Bristol 29.9 has a solid fiberglass hull with a balsa-cored deck. The hull shape is moderate, with a fine entry, a long waterline, and a reverse transom. The boat has a white gelcoat finish with blue stripes and trim. The deck has molded-in nonskid surfaces and teak toe rails. The boat has a large cockpit with wheel steering, pedestal-mounted engine controls, and cockpit cushions. The cockpit also has two large lockers for storage and access to the engine compartment. The boat has stainless steel bow and stern pulpits, stanchions, lifelines, cleats, chocks, and handrails.

Mast and Rigging The Bristol 29.9 has a masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars and stainless steel standing rigging. The mast is deck-stepped on a compression post and has single spreaders and an internal halyard system. The boom has an outhaul, reefing lines, and a topping lift. The boat has jiffy reefing genoa tracks and four cockpit winches for sail handling.

Keel and Rudder The Bristol 29.9 has two keel options: a fixed fin keel or optionally, a stub keel and centerboard. The fin keel is made of lead and has a draft of 4.33 ft (1.32m). The stub keel is also made of lead and has a draft of 3.5 ft (1.1m) with the centerboard retracted and 7.5 ft (2.3m) with it extended. The centerboard is made of fiberglass and is operated by a winch in the cockpit. Both keel options provide good stability and performance for the boat.

The boat has a skeg-mounted rudder that is controlled by a wheel on a pedestal in the cockpit. The rudder is made of fiberglass and has a stainless steel shaft and fittings. The rudder provides good manoeuvrability and balance for the boat.

Bristol 29.9

I would like the thoughts of other Bristol owners. Would you consider the 29.9 a blue water boat or not.

tempest

I owned a 29.9 for about 9 years, ( centerboard, Atomic 4, wheel converstion, dinette model), I would consider it a great coastal cruiser. It was perfect for me, on the east coast of the US with some of the shallow bays and inlets. It was very sturdy and would handle a blow. It took a reef early, but once reefed had a very solid feel. For extended offshore travel I would think that you'd have to overcome a few factors. Tankage for both water and fuel was pretty limited ( I don't remember the exact capacities) The standard electrical system was very basic by todays standards. When I purchased the boat the PO had added things like, auto-pilot, loran, depth, electro-san head..VHF, radio etc, and ran them all directly from the batteries. I had a new electrical panel built and ran all these accesories to the panel. here's a Jack Horner Review. BoatUS.com: Boat Reviews by Jack Hornor, N.A. - Bristol 29.9 It doesn't really answer your question. I agree with the Stand-up to a blow comment. I also never felt that it was sluggish..I had a very early unreliable, 150 roller furling and took it off the furler and had a sail loft put hanks on, preferring to hank on my sails at the time. More often than not, the 110 was plenty of sail to keep her moving.

Personally, I think my B29.9 is a little to light to do serious off-shore work. But then it depends upon what kind of weather you get caught in. The original owner of my boat took it from Portsmouth NH to Bermuda twice that I know of and had no difficulties.

johnshasteen

You can take a 29.9 anywhere and in any weather you are dumb enough to sail. We've owned Paloma since she was almost new and sail offshore most of the time. We have sailed her all over the Gulf of Mexico, including the 600+ mile trip Isla Mujeres several times and the Galveston to Vera Cruz race three times. Twice, over the years, we have been caught in Force 10 storms, the most recent was in March of '08 - according to Coast Guard New Orleans, and confirmed by Coast Guard South Padre, the winds were 50-60, gusting higher and seas were 28-30 feet in the area were were in - we ran before the storm for some 36 hours before it finally abated - we worried for ourselves, but not for Paloma. John, s/v Paloma, B29.9 #141

I think any sail boat can go anywhere, with the proper preparation and a little luck. John Vigor talks about modifications to a Catalina 27 that would need to be made for bluewater sailing in his book, "Twenty Small Boats to Take You Anywhere." I imagine similar modifications would need to be made to a Bristol 29.9 for offshore sailing.

You can't compare the build quality of a Bristol 29.9 to an older Catalina. There's a whole extra safety margin inherent in the quality and weight of the Bristol's construction. Equipment is another matter.

I'm also seriously considering a 29.9 for our next boat. We would be moving up from a hunter 27 and are looking for something that can comfortably make the passage to Bermuda (from NJ) in the near future. Understanding that these boat can stand up to heavy weather, are they comfortable in bigger seas? Do they pound excessivly? And lastley is the centerboard a concern when in bad weather? i.e. banging around or bouncing up and down? I am also kind of partial to Bristols, my second boat was a beaten up caravel that we broght back to life and I was impressed with the over craftsmanship on the boat, especially when compared to our current Hunter...

Thanks Mark, I'll check out the yahoo group

S.v. Paloma

I personally believe these boats are great offshore blue water boats. The boat we have has history within the 29.9 world. She has been around the world a couple of times and she also won the Houston to Veracruz race 3 times. She is hull number 200.

1961 Huckins Linwood

1961 Huckins Linwood

Make Huckins

Model Linwood

Category Motoryachts

Posted 1 Week Ago

She is currently on the hard having the bottom sanded and painted for the 2019 Season. We are planning to revisit and for detailed photos and video May 2019. All bright work redone with Bristol Finish Stock #148944 The largest Linwood built, the only one built on the 64' hull and the only one fitted with V-12 engines at the factory! The 1961 Huckins 60' is a true endeavor with the passion for a romantic elegance restored to timeless beauty. Innovators who changed the way things were done, showed the impossible to be possible and whose legacies are integral within the foundations of what is today taken for granted, whether it be the first practical and affordable private jet, a revolutionary hull design that gave a smooth, fast and dry ride like none before, or designing the earliest planning hulls including the legendary PT boat and later among the first pioneers to sheath wooden hulls in fiberglass. For over nine decades and several generations of pleasure boat evolution and refinement Huckins has been there all along, still in the family, still innovating, still preserving, still striking the right balance between that which offers new possibilities and that which assures known qualities. Possibilities such as lighter weight, tighter construction tolerances or greater performance and efficiency, qualities such as reputation, durability and classic good looks. As is always the case among those who remain in business, let alone in the top tier for generations, it requires walking the high wire between the radical and the rational, a balancing act perhaps only made possible by generations of family ownership, a series of steady hands on the tiller sharing a common gene pool. Which brings us to the subject vessel at hand, the 1961 Huckins Linwood sixty footer, if not the finest example of the brand certainly one of them. Purchased first as an object of love by the current owner, she then became a mission and eventually an obsession, and just as it takes a special breed of innovator to give birth to a classic, it is often the case that love and obsession, not to mention sufficient means, are necessary attributes among those who wish to preserve them. Thus the mission became the total restoration of the vessel to her finest, few expenses spared, no lack of sand in the hourglass. The entire exterior hull was stripped of glass to the bare wood, completely refastened and then re-covered with West System Epoxy and 18oz bi-axial cloth. The keel and chine were reinforced with four layers of cloth, and all the topsides and decking with 10oz cloth. The structural necessities having been addressed, the more remarkable aspect of the project was restoring the power configuration to original. You see, among her past interesting owners was a drug running operation that doubtless appreciated her fine seaworthy qualities and speed, so much so that they reconfigured her to straight inboard with a dummy fuel tank sealed with contraband abaft, then loaded her topsides with bales of marijuana and abandoned her off the coast of Florida... whereupon the Coast Guard seized her and impounded her conveniently on land where the clever villains were able to sneak in under the cover of darkness, cut open the fake tank and recover the real contraband... yet another example of innovation by those obviously at the top of their game. So, out went that renegade power package and in came a pair of 12-V71 TI Diesel The mission is to reconstruct, restore and refit her as classic vessel to cruise 20 knots operating around 29 gallons/hour. To achieve this performance over Fifteen thousand hours highly skilled professionals completed the following: Exterior Hull Stripped to bare wood outside Entire hull re-fastened and covered with West System Epoxy (18 oz. bi-axel cloth) Keel and Chine reinforced with additional four layers of 18 oz. bi-axel cloth. Top sides and deck two layers 10 oz cloth and West-System Epoxy Two Detroit 12-V71 TI Diesel engines, 650 hp, 1980. Frame out rebuild 2005 (approx. 800 hours) Two Walter Heavy Duty V-drives Two four-blade 34 x 36 medium cup propellers (2011) All new half shafts, couplings, etc. Northern lights generator in soundbox (2010) Cruisair 24,000 BTU AC/heat (2005) Wiring (Anchor) replaced (2009) Plumbing (Pex) replaced (2009) Water Heater 40 gallon (2009) Engine room fire extinguishing system (2010) Reason for selling is building a residence in florida.

2006 Maxum 2700 SE,This is a highly desirable boat for many reasons and has been maintained with an open checkbook with every receipt. I am the owner, not a broker. Comes with galvanized trailer built in 2012. It has the 9.5' beam, huge difference than the standard 8.5' beam found on most boats in her class. Fits in 25' slip, anchor pulpit mod allows this. Fully rigged she is 29' long. Save $ on slip fees and you can store on trailer for winter months. Bristol condition, can eat off bilge area. Radar, GPS, fish finder, removable bait tank, 10 rocket launchers, removable seat for fishing use, water ski tow hook, new eisenglass enclosure. underwater lights. Every amenity including flat screen tv/dvd and a shower you can actually use. Too much to list, she is loaded. Everything works as it should. text or email for details. She is turn key, and ready for test run. In San Diego now, just made the move from dana point, 65 miles she ran perfect the whole way. No mold, no wierd smell. I don't have kids but I've taken families kids to catalina and would never hesitate. Reliable, clean and ready for new owner. Fresh bottom paint in march . Engine pulled for new oil pan this winter. No deferred maintenance, this is a perfect example of a well kept vessel and an owner that cares. Thanks for looking .760.822. zero two six nine $45000, 7608220269

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally the 29.9 was delivered with a Universal Atomic 4 gas engine. Later models were powered by a 15 hp Yanmar. By 1983 a 16 hp Universal diesel was standard. 19. Comments on Bristol 29 / 30 ?

Well obviously a boat with more displacement will carry more and with a longer LWL will be faster. The B35.5 displaces about 16,000 pounds to the 29's 9000 and has an LWL of over 27 ft, as compared to the B29's 22.8 LWL; however, for a 30 ft full keel CCA designed boat, the B29 has a very long LWL. Since the mathematical difference in hull ...
