Cool Spaces: Step aboard Tilman Fertitta's luxury mega-yacht

At 164-feet long, 31-feet wide and almost 500 tons, this is no ordinary yacht. Welcome aboard "The Boardwalk", Houston businessman Tilman Fertitta's luxury ocean vessel and favorite toy.

The $40 million yacht has 12 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, grand salons, and a true chef's kitchen with steamers, warming drawers, and walk-in fridge and freezer.

The master suite features an owner's office, opulent bedroom with space to spare, and a gorgeous bathroom.

No expense was spared on the outdoor space either. "The Boardwalk" boasts multiple decks, lounges, scooters for land excursions, and even a helicopter pad.

Fertitta, his family and crew travel the world on the yacht. Some of his favorite stops are the Bahamas and the Mediterranean.

"It's one of those things I always wanted and I'll always have. It isn't cheap, I can tell you that," Fertitta said with a smile. "But every time I walk on it, I tell myself, 'God, I love this boat.'"

HOUSTON – Houston billionaire and Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta showed KPRC 2 inside his luxurious new yacht he docked in Galveston around Mardi Gras.

This is Fertitta’s sixth yacht. The owner of the restaurant giant Landry’s, Inc. and Golden Nugget Casinos told KPRC 2′s Frank Billingsley he played an integral part in designing “the boat” -- the term he prefers for the massive yacht he has dubbed The Boardwalk. The yacht, he explained, was ordered several years ago and took two-and-a-half years to build. It was finished during the pandemic.

Fertitta said in addition to a pool, luxury accommodations, bars on each level and water sport vehicles, the yacht has a full office with full communications around the world.

In addition to docking in Galveston, Fertitta said in the next few years he plans to enjoy “the boat” around the world, with plans to dock in places like the Bahamas, Mexico, Greece, Croatia and more.

Tilman Fertitta debuts new $150 million mega-yacht in Galveston

The Mardi Gras floats may be put away until 2023, but Tilman Fertitta's new mega-yacht, "Boardwalk," will probably be afloat indefinitely.

Fertitta introduced the 252-foot floating palace last week in Galveston during his family's annual Mardi Gras bash, the San Luis Salute.

Actually, this is the second "Boardwalk." It replaces an apparently used-up and obviously inferior 153-foot model.

Designed by De Voogt Naval Architects for about $150 million, the new-and-improved boat has 12 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, a genuine chef's kitchen, a swimming pool, and a helipad.

Don't forget the wine room, crystal chandeliers and a 16-seat dining table. And since it has three levels, it comes with a handy elevator.

The family will apparently hold on to the original "Boardwalk," presumably for navigating waters that won't accommodate the larger craft. Or perhaps for hosting B-List celebs.

Fertitta, CEO and owner of Landry's Inc., also owns the Houston Rockets.

Houston Billionaire Tilman Fertitta’s Superyacht Causes a Greek Stir — The Boardwalk Continues to Turn Heads

The houston rockets owner travels on an anything but ordinary boat and the stories behind it are becoming legendary.

W hile hiking through the woods lining Greece’s Corinth Canal, a local Greek television reporter took a video of billionaire Tilman Fertitta’s superyacht Boardwalk squeezing through the Corinth Canal. He documented a snippet of the four mile journey and posted it on the TV station’s website with the headline: “Who is its billionaire owner?”

It didn’t take long for the Greek news hounds to discover that entertainment and sports mogul Fertitta was the owner. The video posted on the website shows the 252 foot long, 40 foot wide yacht gliding through the canal, which at its most narrow point is 69 feet. The manmade canal is the watery path leads from the Aegean to the Ionian sea, which opens to the Mediterranean

Sailing on a superyacht from the Greek Isles to the enchanting coast of Italy is definitely the realm of the world’s richest.

Recent reporting in national publications are shedding more light on the superyacht ‘s mastery of luxe design. Among the numerous amenities in the Tilman yacht that sleeps 14 — including the VIP suite — are a 120 bottle wine cellar, a lavishly decorated beauty/massage room, a 19-foot-long swimming pool, a bronze sculpture of a female form by Estella Fransbergen with a dress of flowing crystals, diamonds and pearls, and the billionaire requisite — a helicopter pad.

“I don’t think any other owner pays as much attention to the details,” Fertitta told Robb Report during a visit to his yacht. “If you look at the bigger yachts, they really don’t vary much with standard features like ceilings and lighting.”

Robb Report first gushed over Fertitta’s superyacht in the luxury lifestyle magazine last year.

In addition, the magazine quoted Seattle-based yacht interior designer Amy Halffmann. “Tilman came in with all the important details — all the details that really make the difference in this boat. He’s an extreme detail man, down to the quarter of an inch,” Halffmann told the magazine.

The luxe interiors of the Fertitta superyacht include 54 different types of stone, marble and tiles, including mother of pearl tiles, a light pendant by Charles Loomis , appliqués by Wired Custom Lighting and a glass sculpture from David Wright .

“I was going for classic elegance – beautiful spaces that could stand the test of time, and I think we achieved that,” Halffman tells Boat International .

A limited number of Houstonians and Galveston residents are privy to the superyacht as each year Fertitta transports this — his second Boardwalk — to Galveston during Mardi Gras. He entertains VIP guests at a cocktail reception aboard the superyacht before the billionaire and friends join a police escort caravan to the Galveston Convention Center for Fertitta’s San Luis Salute to Mardi Gras.

Now, the rest of the world is getting in on the fascination.

Tilman Fertitta drops $450M to buy upscale River Oaks District

Acquired mixed-use complex from JPMorgan affiliate

Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta reached deep into his pockets to acquire a high-end mixed-use complex in the Galleria area.

Fertitta paid an estimated $450 million for the 14-acre River Oaks District, at 4444 Westheimer Road, the Houston Chronicle reported , citing sources familiar with the deal. 

The seller was an affiliate of JPMorgan Asset Management, which purchased the complex for  $550 million in 2016, a year after Oliver McMillan completed the development.

The River Oaks District comprises more than 300,000 square feet of high-end retail space with renowned brands such as Hermes, Cartier and Rolex, alongside upscale eateries and IPIC Theaters. The district is also a stone’s throw from Fertitta’s Post Oak Hotel and his Post Oak Motor Cars, which sells Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Bugatti vehicles.

“This is the perfect moment in time to add this premier mixed-use development to our luxury portfolio, creating incredible cross-promotional opportunities and elevating the standard for luxury dining and shopping for Houstonians and international travelers alike,” Fertitta told the outlet.

The purchase, facilitated by JLL, includes the 279-unit Grey House apartments and 67,000 square feet of fully leased office space, anchored by U.S. Capital Advisors. The retail component of River Oaks District is 90 percent occupied, the outlet said. 

Fertitta, who also owns Landry’s and the Golden Nugget casino chain, has made several eye-popping acquisitions in recent years, paying an estimated $1.1 billion on luxury real estate assets since November 2022.

The River Oaks deal coincides with a sluggish period for retail sales amid high interest rates and tougher lending standards. Notably, transactions in this sector have increasingly involved private capital, a trend exemplified by Fertitta’s acquisition.

The River Oaks District encompasses more than 300,000 square feet in Houston’s wealthiest neighborhood. It’s home to brands such as Cartier and Hermès, restaurants including Steak 48 and Le Colonial, and an Equinox gym. There’s also more than 67,000 square feet of office space and 279 apartments. The financial-services firm U.S. Capital Advisors is the main tenant, with the office space fully leased and the apartments 90 percent leased.

Fertitta’s acquisition of the mall follows his purchase of California’s Montage Laguna Beach resort in late 2022. In that deal, he reportedly spent $650 million for the property. Around Houston, he also owns the five-star Post Oak Hotel, just a mile from the River Oaks District, as well as a luxury car dealership selling Bentleys and Rolls-Royces. All of that contributes to his $11.6 billion net worth, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

As a big name in Texas, Fertitta has worked to bring more money to the state and Houston in particular. He’s lobbying for Texas to overturn a gambling ban , which would potentially allow him to open Golden Nugget casinos in the Lone Star State. “Let’s do something to bring tourism and the business traveler and conventions to Texas—and these need to be billion-dollar properties that do that,” he said last month. “We need to do it right and build the casinos, and not have a bunch of slot machines at every single little grocery store.”

And while Fertitta already owns a basketball team, he told Bloomberg last month that he has been speaking with the National Hockey League about bringing a hockey team to Houston’s downtown.

T ilman Fertitta has made his mark in Houston with many businesses that he owns throughout the community, and the billionaire hasn't stopped yet. 

Fertitta, 66, bought the River Oaks District , a high-end mixed-use center east of the Galleria, for $450 million to continue the expansion of his entertainment and wide-range hospitality empire. Now, he owns 300,000 square feet of retail, including branded stores by Hermes, Cartier, Rolex, Dior and Van Cleef & Arpels. 

Fertitta's latest purchase has some anticipating what he plans to buy next. Until then, let's take a look at what he already owns in the Bayou City and other locations. 

WHO IS TILMAN FERTITTA? : Houston billionaire who owns the Rockets, Landry’s and more

Fertitta Entertainment

Tilman Fertitta is the sole owner of Fertitta Entertainment which hones his companies, businesses and investments. The company, also known as "A Tilman Fertitta Company," is located on the West Loop South in Houston. 

Landry's Inc. 

In the 1970s-1980s, Tilman Fertitta first grew his empire by opening a string of businesses and then acquired restaurants founded by brothers Bill and Floyd Landry and became the sole owner of Landry's Seafood and Willie G's in 1988. He soon became the CEO and President of Landry's Inc., which grew to own more than 600 properties in 36 states, including Texas, and more than 15 countries . 

The business ventures led to his nickname being the "World Richest Restaurateur." 

Laundry's, Inc. also includes Morton's The Steakhouse, Rainforest Cafe, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., McCormick & Schmick's Seafood & Steaks, Saltgrass Steak House, and more.

Houston Rockets

Fertitta succeeded former Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander after a unanimous decision by the National Basketball Association (NBA) Board of Governors in 2017. Fertitta paid a record $2.2 billion for the team and control of the operating rights of Toyota Center. He was initially a limited partner with the Houston Rockets in 1986. 

Currently, there's construction underway for a $70 million Memorial Hermann Houston Rockets Training Facility  located in the Galleria area. The 75,000-square-foot facility is expected to be finished by the summer of 2024.

The Post Oak Hotel

Located in Uptown Houston, the 700,000-square-foot  Post Oak Hotel is also owned by Fertitta. The Post Oak Hotel opened on the West Loop in 2018 and is next to Fertitta's headquarters. The luxury hotel has 250 rooms from standard (500 square feet) to presidential suite (5,000 square feet). The presidential suite includes private elevator access, a media room, an exercise room and a secluded terrace. 

The hotel also gained attraction for its exclusive two-story penthouse suite worth $125,000 a night located on the 32nd and 33rd floors filled with luxury furnishings, high-end marble, quartzite and tile, exquisite lighting and original art. 

Under his leadership, the hotel earned a  historic double five-star rating from Forbes in 2020 which made it the first in Texas. In 2023, the hotel was issued another five-star rating by Forbes in 2023 . Post Oak Hotel also ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News & World Report's Best Hotels in Texas in 2021 and received the Travel + Leisure's Best City Hotel Award in 2022 . 

Golden Nugget Casino

Being the owner and shareholder of Catch Hospitality Group, Fertitta also owns several casino gaming businesses, including the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino. He bought the Golden Nugget casinos in 2005 but not from Houston, in the state known for its gambling city — Nevada. 

Galveston Island's Pleasure Pier

Fertitta's 60 million entertainment district venue called the Galveston Island's Pleasure Pier has been a staple within the Houston area. Opened in 2012, the pier included a 100-foot Ferris wheel and other amusement park rides, and carnival games, a boardwalk and food. 

CNBC's Billion Dollar Buyer

Although he doesn't own the channel per se, Fertitta does have a reality TV show called the  "Billion Dollar Buyer."  According to CNBC, Fertitta spends time with small businesses to find out where they can improve by providing his expertise. In the end, he will decide on whether to place a transformative purchase order with one, both or neither companies. 

Author of "Shut Up and Listen"

Just when you thought it ended here, Fertitta pushed out a book in 2019 about the "hard business truths" that could help someone succeed called "Shut Up and Listen. He was also honored of bring the New York Times best-selling author.
