There are mechanical gauges, blowers, oil change systems and painted surfaces to make the engine room easy to work in.

The 151 square foot cockpit provides ample room for fishing and houses every convenience to fish with. It received all new teak flooring in 2017! The tackle center is to port with a sink and pull-out fixture. 4 storage doors are under the sink and hidden behind a flush fitting door. The large freezer is beside the tackle center and centerline. Engine room access comes next, followed by the salon door, with storage and a drink cooler in the steps. On the starboard side is the large ben for the ice machine to dump into. Everything is painted white, providing a clean, comfortable place to manage the cockpit. The washdown water is hidden behind doors as are the electrical connections. Cockpit coaming padding runs from the pilasters. The transom fish box gives additional storage when the large in- deck fishbox is full. Transom door, rudder access hatches and a large fighting chair round out the cockpit.

Local news | marina building at cape hatteras national seashore gets a new life and is set to open in early may.

Renaissance Construction owner Steve Daniels grew up on the docks at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, later becoming a mate and then working as a charter boat captain for many years. He remembers watching fascinated as a boy as crews unloaded the day’s catch.

Today, Daniels’ company is nearly done with construction on a new, almost 10,000-square-foot marina building anchoring the fishing center at the famed inlet joining the Pamlico Sound to the Atlantic Ocean. The marina is home to one of the best commercial charter fleets on the East Coast, “if not the world,” he said. But to many locals, it’s much more.

“I got a lot of memories right here,” Daniels said during a Tuesday morning ribbon cutting for the new marina building set to open in early May. The building sits where the original building stood before it was destroyed in a storm in 1962, a fact that makes Daniels proud. “I’m looking forward to this summer, getting some fish and chips and watching one of the greatest fleets unload on these docks.”

On Dec. 31, 2018, the King family entered a 20-year lease agreement to operate and improve the 71-year-old marina on Cape Hatteras National Seashore south of Nags Head. The business had been managed for decades under a National Park Service concession contract with a corporation owned by local charter captains and boat owners.

Under the new lease, Manteo resident Steve King, his son Russell and other family members — operating as Oregon Inlet Fishing Center LLC — rent the 61-slip marina and grounds for $40,000 per month along with 5% of gross receipts. The company receives rent setbacks for improvement projects.

The park service lease spelled out required and needed improvements in its June 2018 bid for contracts, including the extensive repair or rebuild of a new marina building. The long-term lease is the first of its kind for the park service.

The new building and restaurant will cost Oregon Inlet Fishing Center LLC roughly $4 million, National Park Service spokesman Mike Barber said.

The project “has been one of most satisfying things I’ve worked on in terms of results,” said David Hallac, National Parks of Eastern North Carolina superintendent. “In this case we have a lot of results to show for the partnership we have here with our lessee.”

The old, weathered 6,000-square-foot marina building, constructed in 1964 following the devastating Ash Wednesday Storm of March 5-9, 1962, was in poor condition and vulnerable to storm surge and sea level rise, the National Park Service said in the request for bids.

Construction began in June 2022 on the new building, which sits 11 feet above sea level and is built to Miami hurricane codes, with a roof rated for winds up to 150 mph, said Russell King, managing operator for Oregon Inlet Fishing Center LLC.

The first floor of the new building, covering more than 5,000 square feet, includes a charter reservation area, a small museum, a restaurant and the new ship’s store operated by Oceans East Bait and Tackle.

When the building officially opens May 1, hours will be 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The retail store offering clothing, sunglasses, snacks, drinks, and beach and fishing gear will be Oceans East’s second location; the original store on the Nags Head-Manteo Causeway will remain open.

The building’s first floor also will be home to Sea Chef Dockside Kitchen, with the restaurant set to open this Wednesday. The eatery, described on its Facebook page as a counter-service “fish shack,” will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to start.

The marina building’s upper floor will house administrative offices and meeting space, with a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, Marc Basnight Bridge, Pamlico Sound and Bodie Island Light Station.

At the marina basin, Oregon Inlet Fishing Center LLC has replaced the aged fuel pumps with non-ethanol and diesel in-slip fueling and a transient fuel dock, eliminating the old system where boats had to maneuver in and out to fuel. The 1,700-foot wooden dock and bulkheads around the marina also are undergoing repair and replacement, with Titan plastic marine decking built to last 20 to 30 years or more being tested this season, Russell King said.

Other work includes new parking areas and adding a driveway for multiple air pump stations, a vehicle fuel area in a new location with a new driveway, adding pedestrian paths and boardwalks, maintaining and dredging the marina basin and building a new wastewater pump station and drain field.

“The goal was to build a better set of buildings, more resilient to coastal environments,” Hallac said.

Some maintenance and upkeep will still fall to the National Park Service, which will grade, add drainage and pave the parking lot and continue to maintain the boat ramp and kayak launch. Oregon Inlet Fishing Center LLC operates the marina building, boat slips, dock and bulkheads and fuel pumps.

The old marina building will be torn down later this spring, taking with it the days of boarding up windows before storms and replacing siding that flies off during high winds.

Steve King called the new marina headquarters “a marvelous building, something that will be a stopping off point for all visitors to the Outer Banks for decades to come.”
