Yachts racing at the Superyacht Cup Palma 2023

The Superyacht Cup gets underway this month in Palma, marking a significant occasion as Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta and one of the first racing events of the Mediterranean season. The four-day regatta runs from 21 June to 24 June and will see a fleet of high-performance sailing yachts put through their paces in the Bay of Palma. Leading the charge out on the water will be two Js - Velsheda and Svea – joined by bluewater cruisers and high-performance carbon flyers. Take a look at this year's lineup...

Length: 43.6m Builder: Vitters

The largest (and newest) member of the J Class fleet, the 44-metre Vitters Svea , will be back racing in Palma for the cup after being crowned overall winner of the J Class last year. The original lines for this Super J were designed by Tore Holm in 1973 and Hoek Design Naval Architects was called on to revive the 75-year-old drawings and bring her up to date, complete with a 53.75-metre carbon fibre main mast. As a result, Svea displaces just 182 tonnes — two tonnes less than her fellow J Hanuman and six tonnes less than Ranger . After her first regatta season under new ownership last year, she is back and ready to take gold again.

Length: 39.5m Builder: Camper & Nicholsons

Velsheda was built in steel in 1933 for WL Stephenson, the chairman of Woolworths in Britain, and named after his three daughters Velma, Sheila and Daphne. This 38.5-metre yacht is the only original J Class not to have been built for the America's Cup . In 1996 she was purchased by Dutch fashion entrepreneur Ronald de Waal who commissioned Southampton Yacht Services to rebuild her. She is a regatta veteran and a regular contender at the Palma Superyacht Cup, returning to face her larger and newer J Class sibling Svea .

Length: 33m Builder: Vitters

Ribelle was built for a highly experienced sailing yacht owner who wanted a boat that could cruise worldwide, but could also offer superior sailing performance when flicked into 'race mode'. Vitters was chosen to build the carbon fibre racer-cruiser, with Malcolm McKeon devising the design. Ribelle can sail at 20 knots in moderate conditions, with the assistance of a self-tacking jib and furling downwind sails and has been a regular competitor participating in regattas such as Les Voiles de St Tropez, St Barths Bucket and Maxi Rolex Cup. In 2017 she competed her second-ever regatta which was the Superyacht Cup in Palma.

Pattoo , formerly Missy , like Ribelle , is a McKeon-designed, Vitters-built yacht. Last year she returned to Palma under her new ownership and took sixth place overall, and is back to climb her way up the finishing order. As a carbon-fibre performance cruiser, she has a carbon-fibre mast from Southern Spars (with ECsix carbon rigging) and carries a sail wardrobe from North Sails. Other features include her lifting keel that extends from 3.75 metres to five metres.

Miss Silver

Length: 36m Builder: Alloy Yachts

Fresh off a victory at the 2021 New Zealand Millennium Cup and on completion of a multi-million-dollar refit, the 36-metre Lady M is ready to do battle in the Bay of Palma. She was built in New Zealand at Alloy Yachts in 1995 as a fast cruising sloop designed by the legendary Ed Dubois. Her refit included a new helm and control stations, and new sails ready for this year's racing scene.

Length: 30.1m  Builder: Nautor Swan

Swan 100 sailing yacht Onyx will be making its Palma Superyacht Cup debut this summer. The 30.1-metre was built by the Finnish yard Swan to a design by German Frers , who also completed the naval architecture. She was the first in the series to feature a semi-raised saloon configuration, giving her a low-profile coach roof. She underwent a major rebuild between 2021 and 2022 at Baltic Yachts in Mallorca, including new decks, new sails, machinery and more.

Length: 24m  Builder: Nautor Swan

Another Swan competing in this year's regatta is Umiko . She returns to the competition after her debut in 2021, where she claimed a podium place in the last race. Proudly part of the Finnish brand’s Swan 80 series, she is one of the smaller contenders, featuring naval architecture and an exterior design by German Frers . Since her launch in 2000, she has benefited from multiple refits, allowing her to retain her competitive edge.

Length: 39m Builder: Fitzroy Yachts

The 39-metre Lady M will be making her debut appearance at the 2023 Superyacht Cup Palma, but she is no stranger to the racing circuit. She was launched in 2006 as the third Dubois performance sloop and had previously competed in regattas around the world under her former names Zulu , Ganesha and Mia Cara . She has recently completed a six-month refit with KRM Yacht, including a full repainting of the hull and superstructure, an interior refresh and replacement of the teak decking. She has had a successful and eventful racing career, participating in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, the Dubois Cup and The Superyacht Cup.

Length: 24m Builder: Wally

The 24-metre wallycento is back for her second successive year after taking a race win on her Superyacht Cup Palma debut last year. Delivered in 2006 as Tango G, Rose has a flush cockpit-less deck, 45-metre carbon rig and 3DL self-tacking jib, setting her up nicely for racing. In "race mode", she has a crew of 24 and offers a total sailplan of 640 square metres upwind. She was delivered as the fourth wallycento model but it’s immediately clear that she differs from her siblings, thanks to her unique design team: Pininfarina for the interior, and Mills Design for the naval architecture and exterior design, which was developed in collaboration with Wally.

Palma international boat show (pibs) and the superyacht village (psv) return to the centre of palma de mallorca 27th - 30th april….

Back for a bigger than ever year, the Palma International Boat Show (PIBS) and The Superyacht Village (PSV) herald the beginning of the 2023 summer season in style over four days at Moll Vell in the centre of Palma de Mallorca 27th - 30th April. The 2022 show attracted more than 32,000 people and brought together 276 companies, this year record numbers are expected to descend on the largest of the Balearic Islands, in celebration of all things nautical.

''The setting for PIBS is spectacular'' says Arne Ploch, Managing Director of the Palma Superyacht Village. ''In the heart of beautiful Palma, surrounded by amenities, luxury hotels and world-class restaurants, in the springtime sun, clients are flying in from all over Europe and further afield, it's a really enjoyable time and a great way to start the summer.''

Clients are not only flying in to enjoy the boat show atmosphere, but they are also coming ready to buy, Ploch explains. ''Having PIBS in the springtime is a great opportunity for buyers, they can potentially sign a contract right after the show in May and a month later be out on the water fully enjoying the Mediterranean season aboard their new vessel, that's a unique and very alluring prospect. Palma Superyacht Village, a show organized by the Balearic Yachts Brokers Association for the industry is the perfect platform to introduce newcomers to yachting as well as cover all services an experienced owner is looking for.”

palma yacht

Palma also has the distinction of being one of the sailing yacht capitals of the world. A strong pedigree of not only sailing yachts but also motor yachts from 24-55m+ will be found at PSV in-water display, for sale and charter. In 2023 there are more yachts available to charter at the Superyacht Village than ever before, as the brokerages respond to an ever-growing client base wishing to spend time on the water.

PSV is also an important date on the B2B calendar, as the professional yachting industry converges in Palma to meet, network, collaborate and exchange ideas. The ever-popular Re-fit & Repair area and the raft of shoreside exhibitors will feature both local and international companies and this year is sponsored by new brand partner Estrella Galicia.

Also new to the Superyacht Village is the Innovation Corner in collaboration with leisure marine entrepreneurial community hub Yachting Ventures. The Innovation Corner will provide a space for nautical startups to showcase new technologies, and to promote dialogue between young companies and the wider yachting industry.

"We are thrilled to announce that the Innovation Corner, a new initiative in collaboration with Yachting Ventures and the Palma Superyacht Village, featured at the 2023 edition of the Palma Boat Show," continues Ploch. "As an island, we understand the tremendous contribution of the yachting industry to our economy and acknowledge the significance of remaining innovative. We are eager to meet the selected start-ups participating in the Innovation Corner and offer them the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the attendees of PIBS this year."

palma yacht

Commenting further on the partnership, Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures adds, "We're delighted to offer startups the opportunity to showcase their solutions to the industry by participating in the inaugural Innovation Corner at PIBS. There's always a real buzz at this show, and I grew up in Mallorca so the event is personally one of my favourites on the yachting calendar. It signifies the start of summer in the Mediterranean, and it is especially important because it inclusively spans all sizes of yachts and watercraft.''

The yachts are not the only attraction at The Superyacht Village, food enthusiasts will be delighted by Mallorca resident and Michelin-starred chef Mark Fosh and his team who once again will bring the Fosh Lounge to the Superyacht Village for delectable bites and refreshments in a luxurious setting, this year brought to life in collaboration with Bentley Barcelona.

Gourmets will also love sampling the offerings from Tast Out catering, who will provide their take on local cuisine during the show via their first-class catering services to exhibitors and boats.

Whether you are coming to Palma to do a little yacht shopping, meet with industry colleagues and friends, discover new technologies and innovations or sit back glass of rosé in hand and soak up the atmosphere of all things nautical in one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular destinations the place is to be is Palma International Boat Show and The Superyacht Village, Moll Vell, Palma de Mallorca this month 27th - 30th April.

Mallorca is a fine place to sail, with a coastline that seems to be made up almost exclusively of superb beaches and incredibly picturesque calas, complete with turquoise blue water and funky-coloured sea-life. There’s fine anchorages and excellent marina facilities, and interesting exciting places to see, great weather, and reliable winds. It’s a sailor’s paradise.

From Palma you can hop around the Balearic islands: the natural wilderness of Cabrera and the UNESCO protected oasis of Menorca are within easy reach, and it’s possible to get down to Ibiza at a slog. Under Pressure

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Palma

Palma is the capital of Mallorca, and located close to the international airport, so it’s a convenient and well-connected place to set sail from. From Palma you can circumnavigate the whole island (but at 160 nM it’s a bit of a slog to do it in one week), head up either side of the Mallorcan coast (though the Eastern side is better), hop over to nearby Cabrera or Menorca, or even traverse 56 nM to Ibiza or the Spanish mainland. Each direction offers warm seas, generally reliable winds, and exciting places to discover.

Palma - 6 day Sailing itinerary

Our itinerary is only six days because you’re unlikely to sail on the first Saturday (you only get on the boat from mid to late afternoon), and it takes time to get the provisions and the crew on board so you’ll likely only be able to set off bright and early on Sunday morning. At the other end of the week, the boat will need to be back in Palma for Friday evening, though you can stay on-board for one last night, before disembarking on Saturday morning.

Cabrera

Today is the longest leg of our trip, which should help to get your crew licked into shape, and to give everyone a chance of taking the helm. You’ll need to have been organised before the trip, as our first port of call, Cabrera, is a natural wilderness and you’ll need to have pre-booked a spot on the island if you want to stay overnight (If you haven’t then sail this itinerary backwards and get Cabrera booked in for your last night – your charter company will be able to sort this for you).

We’re sailing out and south to Cabrera, pretty much running with the prevailing summer winds which arrive from the north and sort of swirl around the island before rushing onwards towards Sicily. Cabrera is an uninhabited island, and, due to its remoteness, pretty much always has been – which means that the natural coast, plants, birds and animals are unspoilt and thriving. It’s a Special Protection Area by law to try and keep it that way (and a fascinating place to spend the night).

Cala D’Or

Once a cute fishing village, Cala D’Or, which is a complex of three inland bays and seven beaches, is now a popular destination with land-lubbing tourists, who appreciate the picturesque golden sands, pine forests and clear blue seas. The marina is in the bay on your port side as you enter the bay area.

As well as the beaches, Cala D’Or has a great range of restaurants, bars, and places to sit and enjoy the sunshine, and, although there are quite a number of fancy hotels in the area, the town has managed to retain an authentic Mallorcan charm.

Porto Cristo

Porto Cristo was so named in 1260, when a driverless fishing boat containing only a crucifix was washed up on the shore here. Porto Cristo is also popular with (quieter) tourists, but it is different to the other towns along the coast because it also continues to be a working fishing village – and you’ll taste some of the freshest fish in the Med here.

In terms of tourist attractions, there’s some nice beaches nearby, as well as some caves where you’ll be able to wonder at the size of some stalactites and stalagmites, but it’s nice just to stroll around the town and admire the pretty old buildings. Of note, Porto Cristo is 5km from where a certain Rafael Nadal, was born (in Manacor).

Cala Figuera

Our end point for the day is Cala Figuera, which is a natural harbour. In contrast to the rest of the coastline, and mainly owing to the fact that it is 4km from the nearest sandy beach, this cute little fishing village is pretty much a town for the locals (or for rich Spaniards who have second-homes here), so it is about as authentic as you can get: with whitewashed buildings down to the shore, and local fishermen mending their nets on the pavements.

On the way, there’s two hidden gems of beaches in the nearby Cala Mondrago (the next bay after Portopetro), which surely have some of the clearest water in the Med. There aren’t too many visitor berths in Cala Figuera, though, so if your here in August, you might prefer to get moored up sooner rather than later. There’s a decent choice of fantastic (seafood) restaurants if you stroll around the village.

Sa Rapita

Eventually you’ll sail up past a headland-town of Colonia de Sant Jordi, famous for manufacturing high-grade salt, which marks the start of the best beach in Mallorca: Es Trenc. It’s three kilometres of fine white sand and turquoise seas, reminiscent of places in the Caribbean. There’s plenty of space for everyone – particularly as it’s quite difficult (and slow) to get to the beach by car.

Take a dip, then head to Sa Rapita marina, where you’ll notice the ‘Son Duri’ watchtower, which was once a part of a key defence system for Palma – for 300 years from 1595 there were (at least) two men stationed here, day and night, watching the horizon, ready to light their beacon at the first sign of any trouble arriving by sea. Similar to Lord of the Rings, this triggered the neighbouring beacons to be lit, passing a message back to Palma to prepare the troops for battle.

Palma

You’ll need to refuel the boat on arrival in the port area of Mallorca, then it’s time to head back to the marina and to moor the boat up for one last time. You can stay on board tonight, before disembarking tomorrow morning. If you haven’t yet explored Palma itself, then it’s a historic city with a fine old town which is packed with magnificent architecture – including the cathedral which dates back to 1229. There’s bars, tapas restaurants, ice cream shops and you’ll find most luxury brands have a store here somewhere.

Hopefully you’ve had a wonderful time here in Mallorca, and you’re leaving with even better friends than you arrived with, as well as a sackful of wonderful memories of your time on-board. If you’ve had a really good time, then maybe you’re already thinking about where you all want to go sailing together next year – in which case, head to PlainSailing.com and see where else you can charter from with us. Have a safe trip home, and hopefully we’ll see you online soon!

Sailing Conditions

Spain Sailing - Wind Conditions

The winds around Mallorca are interesting and unusual. Whilst they are reliably strong, the direction from which they arrive at depends very much upon where on the island you are. In summer, the prevailing winds principally rush down from the north, from the Spanish mainland, then whip around both sides of the island before heading off East to Italy, Greece, and eventually Turkey.

That means that as you go around the island, you’ll find that the wind direction changes, so you’ll find that you’re constantly trimming and re-trimming your sails – which is good news if you enjoy tinkering with the sails.

The wind tends to be stronger in spring and autumn, and in winter, the wind can arrive from pretty much any direction, so do pay attention to the weather forecasts.

Palma - Average Temperature

Palma is the capital of Mallorca, which has been welcoming sailors for hundreds of years. You'll get the chance to explore the old town at the start or end of your holiday - there's a fair chance that you'll have a good view of the castle from your boat!

If you need somewhere to stay near the marina, then we recommend the Dalt Murada for chartering from La Lonja marina or Sercotel Hotel Zurburan  if you're starting from Marina Palma Cuarentena, but there are lots of hotels in Palma, though the ones on the sea-front tend to be expensive.

La Lonja Marina, Mallorca

There's a number of marinas in the Palma area, but La Lonja marina is the 'charter marina' and is co-owned by the six or so Charter operators which offer boats from the marina. It's recently had a facelift, and offers basic facilities (but you're within walking distance of Palma town itself, for shopping, eating, drinking and any other facilities you will need).

Palma Yacht Crew

Crew Housing

palma yacht

Finding a roof over your head and a place to crash upon arriving at a new destination can be a daunting task. Fortunately, in this day and age, it is fairly easy to prepare ahead. However, it is worth keeping in mind that the yachting hubs tend to get very busy with crew houses known to be fully booked during these periods;

Antibes : March – June and end of September – October

Palma : March – June and end of September – October

Fort Lauderdale : Middle of January – June and September-November

Newport : May – September

Caribbean : End of November – March

If you decide to stay in a crew house, you are recommended to make a reservation WELL IN ADVANCE! It is always a good idea to bring a printed confirmation (or screenshots) just in case of problems with your booking. Please bear in mind that it can be challenging for some crew house owners to take reservations due to the nature of tenants coming and going at a random pace. For this reason, not all crew houses will take bookings far in advance. NB: Some crew houses require tenants to present a Seaman’s Book, STCW certificate or a yachting CV.

You can also check these helpful sites, which will help you find alternative accommodation worldwide:

A QUICK FAVOUR TO ASK: Unfortunately, contact information changes from time to time. To help others find up-to-date-information on the site, please report any broken links to [email protected]

  • Facebook Of course, the biggest network to connect everyone. You can often find rooms for rent or ask for one in the Facebook group covering your destination. This is likely your most flexible option.
  • Roomster Roomster helps you find private rooms worldwide – great for small budgets!
  • Hostelworld.com HostelWorld.com is an awesome hostel-search engine, where you can see photos and compare hostels not just locally but also worldwide. You can also find hostel deals and see the location of the hostels in relation to the marinas. It is well worth checking out!
  • TripAdvisor TripAdvisor is always a good choice if you want to check the reviews before booking, whether it be a hotel, hostel, restaurant, bar etc. Discounts are often available from their platform as well.
  • FairBnB You may never have heard of FairBnB. This new platform shares their commission with a local community project each time you make a booking through them – without the host being paid less. This is “Community Powered Tourism” at its’ best!
  • AirBnB AirBnB allows you to find private accommodation in a safe environment worldwide. Perhaps not the cheapest form of housing, but if you are unable to book a room, a crew house or a hostel then this is a good place to continue your search for a place to stay.
  • Flipkey Flipkey is a great alternative to AirBnB and definitely worth checking out if you are looking for something a little more private.
  • Sublet Sublet is a brilliant site which helps you find rooms and apartments short term or long term worldwide.

This isn’t the end of all our crew housing – but for specific destinations on crew housing check out our destinations pages for a more comprehensive list.

Why the U.S. put a $1 million bounty on a Russian yacht’s alleged manager

On Sept. 3, 2020, the staff of a $90 million yacht placed an order with a U.S. company for a set of luxury bathrobes that came to $2,624.35.

For roughly two years before that, according to federal prosecutors, the yacht’s management had been falsely claiming it was working for a boat named “Fanta.” But the luxury bathrobes came embroidered with a monogram that, prosecutors said, revealed the yacht’s true identity: “Tango.”

That was a problem, officials say in court papers, because Tango was owned by a Russian billionaire under U.S. sanctions, and doing business on his behalf violated federal law.

Late last month, U.S. authorities unveiled a $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest and or conviction of the man they say was running the yacht staff and orchestrated the deception with the robes — Vladislav Osipov, 52, a Swiss-based businessman from Russia. In a new indictment , federal prosecutors say Osipov misled U.S. banks and companies into doing business with the Tango yacht despite the sanctions on the Russian owner, whom the Justice Department has identified as billionaire Viktor Vekselberg .

Osipov has denied the allegations. Osipov’s attorney has said that the government has failed to demonstrate that Vekselberg owned the yacht, and that its management was therefore not a sanctions violation.

The reward offer for Osipov reflects the latest stage in the evolution of the West’s broader financial war against Russia two years into the war in Ukraine, as the United States and its allies increasingly target intermediaries accused of enabling Russian oligarchs to circumvent sanctions.

Many Russians close to President Vladimir Putin have been under sanctions dating to 2014, when Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine and sent proxy forces into that country’s eastern Donbas region. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, President Biden vowed to deal a “crushing blow” with a barrage of new sanctions on financial institutions, industries, business executives and others tied to the Kremlin. But roughly two years later, Russia’s economy has proved surprisingly resilient after the nation poured tens of billions of dollars into ramping up its military industry. Moscow has also worked around the sanctions, finding new third parties to supply it with critical military and industrial hardware, as well as countries beyond Europe to buy its oil.

Now, the West is trying to increase the reach of its sanctions by digging deeper into Russian supply chains. Late last month, the Treasury Department announced more than 500 new sanctions targeting Russia , primarily on military and industrial suppliers. The Justice Department also announced charges against two U.S.-based “facilitators” of a Russian state banker who is under sanction, as well as the guilty plea of a dual national based in Atlanta who was accused of laundering $150 million through bank accounts and shell companies on behalf of Russian clients.

Prioritizing criminal charges against — and the arrests of — Western employees of Russia’s elites represents a new escalation of the U.S. financial war against Putin, experts say. One Moscow businessman, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said many influential Russians are concerned about the arrest of two associates of Andrey Kostin, the head of VTB, Russia’s second-biggest state bank. These associates, Vadim Wolfson and Gannon Bond, were charged with helping Kostin evade sanctions by maintaining a $12 million property in Aspen, Colo., for Kostin’s benefit while concealing his ownership. Kostin has said that the charges of sanctions evasion against him are “unfounded” and that he has not violated any laws . Bond has pleaded not guilty; Wolfson hasn’t made an initial court appearance yet.

Wolfson, also known as Vadim Belyaev, had been a Russian billionaire until the Russian government took over his bank in 2017. Bond, 49, is a U.S. citizen from Edgewater, N.J. For all Russians living abroad and working with people in Russia, the threat of criminal charges is a much more worrying prospect than the sanctions imposed by the Treasury Department last month against hundreds of individuals and entities, the businessman said, in part because sanctions are far easier to dodge than criminal charges.

“What you have seen through today’s public announcements are our efforts at really targeting the facilitators who possess the requisite skill set, access, connections that allow the Russian war machine [and] the Russian elites to continually have access to Western services and Western goods,” David Lim, co-director of the Justice Department’s KleptoCapture task force, which is tasked with enforcing U.S. sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, told reporters last month.

Thad McBride, an international trade partner at the law firm Bass Berry & Sims, said the crackdown on intermediaries reflected the natural evolution of the U.S. sanctions campaign in response to Russian adjustments.

“It seems to me they have gone through a comprehensive list of the oligarchs, and you can debate whether or not it’s had a meaningful impact on the Russian war effort,” McBride said. “Because they’re getting smarter about who’s who, they’re finding other people who play meaningful roles in these transactions, even though they’re not showing up in the headlines.”

The charges against Osipov related to his alleged management of the Tango yacht illustrate the mounting potential consequences for people in Europe and the United States who attempt to do business with Russians targeted by Western allies, as well as the opaque structures allegedly employed by those seeking to evade sanctions.

With a net worth estimated by Forbes in 2021 at $9 billion, Vekselberg, 66, has long drawn scrutiny from the West — and sought to safeguard his wealth. He made his initial fortune in aluminum and oil in Russia’s privatization of the 1990s and then expanded into industrial and financial assets in Europe, the United States and Africa, with Putin’s blessing. In addition to the yacht, federal prosecutors say, Vekselberg acquired $75 million worth of properties, including apartments on New York’s Park Avenue and an estate in the Long Island town of Southampton.

Vekselberg, who declined to comment for this article, has not been criminally charged by the Justice Department. In a 2019 interview with the Financial Times, he denounced the sanctions as arbitrary and harmful for international business, saying he had been targeted just because he was Russian and rich and knows Putin.

In April 2018, the Treasury Department under the Trump administration sanctioned Vekselberg and six other Russian oligarchs as part of broader financial penalties over the Kremlin’s invasion of Crimea, support for President Bashar al-Assad in Syria and interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Vekselberg was also targeted for his work for the Kremlin as chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation, an attempt to create Russia’s version of the Silicon Valley — evidence that appeared to undermine the Russian businessman’s claims that he operated independently of the Kremlin.

But with Vekselberg’s payments monitored by U.S. banks, according to the federal indictment , Osipov used shell companies and intermediaries to avert the bite of sanctions. Vekselberg kept other major assets out of the reach of U.S. authorities by making use of the Treasury Department’s 50 percent ownership rule, which stipulates that it is illegal to transact with firms only if an owner under sanction controls more than 50 percent of the business.

For example, a month after Treasury imposed sanctions on Vekselberg in April 2018, his Renova Innovation Technologies sold its 48.5 percent stake in Swiss engineering giant Sulzer to Tiwel Holding AG, a group that is nevertheless still “beneficially owned” — meaning, owned in practice — by Vekselberg through Columbus Trust, a Cayman Islands trust, according to Sulzer’s corporate filing. Vekselberg’s longtime right-hand man at Renova, Alexei Moskov, replaced one of Vekselberg’s direct representatives on the board. Moskov told The Washington Post that he stepped down from all his executive positions at Renova Group in 2018 after U.S. sanctions were first imposed and from that moment ceased to be Vekselberg’s employee.

The attempts to circumvent the sanctions appear to have found some success in the U.S. legal system. Columbus Nova, a U.S.-based asset management fund controlling more than $100 million in assets in the U.S. financial and tech industry, is run by Vekselberg’s cousin, Andrew Intrater. The firm battled for more than two years to lift a freeze on Columbus Nova’s assets, imposed by Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control because of the sanctions on Vekselberg, and won, reaching a settlement agreement with the Treasury Department. After renaming itself Sparrow Capital LLC, Columbus Nova successfully argued that Intrater — not Vekselberg — owns the fund. Intrater argued that the company was 100 percent owned by U.S. citizens and that no individual or entity under sanction held any interest in it. Intrater said Columbus Nova had earned fees for managing investment funds owned by Renova. He said he had repeatedly told Treasury he would not distribute any funds to Vekselberg.

Now Osipov, the alleged manager of Vekselberg’s $90 million yacht, is attempting a similar argument as U.S. authorities seek his arrest on charges of bank fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and violations of sanctions law.

The federal indictment states that the Tango was owned by a shell corporation registered in the British Virgin Islands that was in turn owned by several other companies. The Virgin Islands shell company, authorities say, was controlled by Osipov, who also served in senior roles for multiple companies controlled by Vekselberg. U.S. officials also say Vekselberg ultimately controlled the other companies that owned the Virgin Islands shell company.

According to the indictment, a Tango official instructed a boat management company in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to use a false name for the yacht — “Fanta” — to disguise its true identity from U.S. financial institutions and firms, which try to avoid doing business with an entity or person under sanction.

Working at Osipov’s direction, according to the indictment, employees for Tango bought more than $8,000 worth of goods for the yacht that were unwittingly but illegally processed by U.S. firms and U.S. financial institutions, including navigation software, leather basket magazine holders provided by a bespoke silversmith, and web and computing services. The management company running Tango, run by Osipov, also paid invoices worth more than $180,000 to a U.S. internet service provider, federal prosecutors say.

The Tango was seized by the FBI and Spanish authorities in the Mediterranean not long after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, and Osipov was first indicted last year. The owner of the Spanish yacht management company hired by Osipov, Richard Masters, 52, of Britain, was criminally charged last year by federal prosecutors with conspiracy to defraud the United States and violating federal sanctions law. A request for comment sent to Masters’ firm was not returned.

But in recent court documents, Osipov’s attorney argues that the yacht was not more than 50 percent owned by Vekselberg, and that the government hasn’t demonstrated it was. Barry J. Pollack, an attorney at Harris, St. Laurent and Wechsler, also says the government never warned Osipov of its novel and “unconstitutional” application of federal sanctions law.

“The government points to no precedent that supports its extraordinary interpretation and cites no authority that allows the traditional rules of statutory construction to be turned on their head,” Pollack wrote in a defense filing. The filing adds: “[Osipov] is not a fugitive because he did not engage in any of the allegedly criminal conduct while in the United States, has never resided in the United States, did not flee from the United States, and has not concealed himself.”

Still, the State Department’s Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program has said it will provide up to $1 million for information leading to Osipov’s arrest, warning that he may visit Herrliberg, Switzerland; Majorca, Spain; or Moscow.

The case demonstrates the extent of the U.S. commitment to tighten the screws on those seen as aiding Russian elites, even if they themselves are not closely tied to the Kremlin.

“When DOJ levels legal action against an individual or entity, they have quite a bit of evidence, especially because the threshold to press charges for money-laundering and sanctions evasion is so high,” said Kim Donovan, director of the Economic Statecraft Initiative within the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center. “We’ve had quite a bit of experience targeting Russia directly, and what you’re starting to see is the U.S. go after the facilitators enabling sanctions evasion. That’s where the U.S. is focusing its efforts right now.”
