Explore the Gallant Lady Yacht With Our Insider’s Look

Ian Fortey

The Gallant Lady dates back to 2007 when it was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and built by Feadship Shipyard. The yacht was originally built for billionaire Jim Moran however Moran did only a short time after the yacht was finished, in April 2007 so he was never able to personally take ownership and use the yacht.

The yacht interior was designed by John Munford while it features exterior design work by Richard Jorden. The hull is aluminum with a superstructure that is also aluminum and it features teak decks. Much of the rest of the yacht was designed to be lightweight and eco-friendly which includes aircraft design tech, the first time Feadship used such technology in its yacht builds.

Who Owns the Gallant Lady Yacht?

gallant lady yacht owner

The original owner was intended to be Jom Moran, a billionaire known for his auto empire and philanthropy, but the vessel passed to the estate after his death.

The yacht was put up for sale a couple of times over the years but in 2022 it was finally sold after being available for just 90 days. The deal was made through yacht brokers acting on behalf of the Moran family as well as the buyer and, because the sale is still relatively new, it’s not actually known who purchased the yacht. As of 2023, we can’t say who is the current owner of the Gallant Lady.

Gallant Lady Confusion and History

There is conflicting information online that states the ship features a steel hull and that it was built in 1995. Based on my research, I believe this is a mistake regarding earlier, smaller yachts that Jim Moran once owned and this version does have the lighter weight aluminium hull.

In fact, Moran owned 8 different yachts in his life that were known as Gallant Lady at one time or another. Many were later renamed, but Moran was an avid yacht fan and that was his go-to name for each vessel. The Gallant Lady we’re talking about was his final and largest Gallant Lady. The name of this yacht seems to have actually recently changed to ACTA.

How Big is the Luxury Yacht Gallant Lady?

gallant lady yacht owner

The Gallant Lady, while not the largest yacht in the water, still measures at 168.0 ft in length. In terms of displacement she has a gross tonnage of 765 GT. The vessel has a beam of 31 ft and a draft of 7 ft 1 in.  The relatively shallow draft means the yacht is designed for and especially adept at sailing waters around places like the Bahamas.

How Much Did the Gallant Lady Yacht Cost?

gallant lady yacht owner

Back in 2012 the Lady Gallant was put on sale for $49,500,000 but the price was reduced fairly quickly down to $42,500,000. Since that time her reported value has dropped significantly down to about $25 million which was the asking price for her sale in 2022.

Can You Charter the Motor Yacht Gallant Lady?

gallant lady yacht owner

Under the name Acta you can, in fact, charter the Lady Gallant. Charter prices for the ACTA start at $235,000 per week, not including expenses. This gets up to $255,000 in the high season during the winter, but could go higher depending on demand.

How Fast is the Gallant Lady Yacht and What Engines Does She Use?

gallant lady yacht owner

The Gallant Lady is powered by a pair of Caterpillar 3508B DITA engines that produce 1000HP each at 1,600 RPM. It has a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots. She has a range of 4,200 nautical miles

What is the Interior of the Gallant Lady Yacht Like?

gallant lady yacht owner

As part of that eco-friendly and lightweight design, the Gallant Lady uses a lot of natural wood, though not necessarily the everyday stuff you might imagine. It features  black walnut, sycamore, eucalyptus and myrtle burl.

The interior design is inspired by Europe in the 18th and 19th century, most specifically France and Europe, giving it an opulent and high class feel.

The vessel underwent a refit in 2020 as well that reportedly cost just shy of $7 million. The electrical system was overhauled and it received new paint throughout at this time. Many interior spaces such as the galley and main-deck crew pantry were upgraded. The generators were rebuilt and a year later the engines were serviced.

The yacht accommodates 10 guests aboard in five staterooms. The master stateroom is on the bridge or owner’s deck.  The master suite features floor-to-ceiling windows to ensure plenty of natural light and amazing views. There is a king-size bed and a large en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, solarium and so on. To the aft is the owner’s private alfresco deck space that features both a spa pool and a dining area.

The guest quarters feature two queen beds and two twins and can be accessed through a guest foyer, while the master suite is reached by the elevator.

Features and Amenities

gallant lady yacht owner

The yacht was designed to be sleek, light and eco-friendly. We’re not entirely in the know about what changes the new owner may have made, if any, in the last few months but there are some features that are touted when you’re looking to charter the vessel that bring up these highlights. Towards that end it does feature some innovative features that make it a standout.

  •  An environmentally safe bio-reactive waste sewage treatment plant
  • An elevator allows access to all decks of the yacht, including the owner’s deck
  • A well stocked exterior bar ensures guests can get refreshments while enjoying the sun at sea
  • A swim platform
  • Numerous sunpads for lounging on deck
  • Upgraded electronics and entertainment systems
  • Plush living and dining spaces

Like any good yacht, the Gallant Lady/ACTA also has some water toys on board for guests to enjoy when they want to get out and have some fun. These include things like:

  • A SeaDoo Waverunner
  • A pair of Seabobs
  • A variety of inflatable and towable water toys
  • A pair of stand up paddle boards
  • A wide array of fishing gear
  • Snorkeling equipment

The Bottom Line

gallant lady yacht owner

The Gallant Lady was commissioned by billionaire Jim Moran in 2007. It was built by Feadship with naval architecture by de Voogt. Moran had a history of yacht ownership dating back decades and had, in fact, had seven previous ships that were also called Gallant Lady.

Moran passed away early in the year and his family took control of the vessel, trying to sell it several times over the years. It was finally sold in 2022 to an undisclosed buyer for $25 million. The buyer has since made the Gallant Lady available for charter but it’s under a new name – ACTA. You can charter ACTA for about $235,000 per week.

The vessel is about 168 feet in length and maintains a cruise speed of 12 knots with a maximum speed of 15 knots. There is room on board for 10 guests in five staterooms. The entire vessel was refit in 2020 and it’s unknown if the new owners made any additional changes when they purchased it in late 2022. That said, the boat had new paint and interiors and an overhauled electronics system as well.

In addition to some of the standard features you’d hope to find on a yacht, it’s also been designed to be more lightweight and eco-friendly than some similar designs.

52m Feadship Gallant Lady emerges after year-long refit

The 52.46 metre Gallant Lady is en route to Rotterdam following a full-scale refit at Feadship's Aalsmeer shipyard. The yacht entered the refit shed almost a year ago and is set to be redelivered in the coming weeks after the successful completion of sea trials.

The yacht has undergone significant work to both her interior and exterior and the yard has also performed scheduled maintenance and technical upgrades to bring her up to 2022 standards.

In a statement, Feadship described the refit as "intensive". The yard hasn't disclosed all of the specifics of the work, but it has said that the interior has been "completely reconfigured".

The yacht has also benefitted from new alfresco areas, including a the addition of a new beach club and reconfigured flybridge.

Gallant Lady was delivered in 1996 to a design by Rick Jorden with interiors by Paola D. Smith. Her striking profile features a contrast of horizontal and vertical segments of glazing, and, unusually for a yacht of this size, is home to a flybridge with a control station.

Meanwhile, the yacht's interiors have been kept under wraps since she hit the water, however it is known they follow a classic theme.

It comes at a busy time for Feadship, with the yard having recently redelivered Mogambo fresh from an eight-month refit .

A design that was considered unfathomable in the mid-1990s changed how yachts were constructed thanks to the innovation of Jim Moran and JM Family Enterprises. The signature of Gallant Lady is three two-story windows. Believe it or not, Gallant Lady is not one but many yachts owned and operated by the private South Florida corporation. Here is everything you need to know about Gallant Lady Yacht.

Who Owns The Gallant Lady Yacht

When asked who owns Gallant Lady Yacht know that you are referring to more than one vessel sharing the same name. The late Mr. Jim Moran, a businessman from Chicago, established JM Family Enterprises in Deerfield Beach. Since Mr. Moran’s passing, the Gallant Lady yacht owner 2021 is JM Family Enterprises.

JM Family Enterprises is a distributor of Toyota vehicles throughout the Southeastern portions of the United States. Since its inception, the company has been wildly successful and has owned a substantial number of yachts since 1968.

Today, the company employs over 4,000 people and boasts a marine and aviation department. The marine and aviation departments focus specifically on the maintenance, operation, and hosting of guests aboard the series of yachts and jets.

Despite Jim Moran founding the company and being known as Jim Moran yacht owner, he also began a series of charitable organizations within the South Florida community.

How Many Vessels Are In The Gallant Lady Fleet

The number of yachts under the JM Family umbrella varies based on the year, as they are notorious for buying and selling vessels.

On average, the company owns between three and five vessels exceeding thirty feet in length. When it comes the length the largest yacht in the fleet measures 172 feet. The yacht complete construction in 1996 by Feadship.

In addition to the large vessel, two to three tenders are an intricate part of the fleet. All vessels are name Gallant Lady.

How Much Is The Gallant Lady Yacht Worth

The yachts vary in value ranging from the hundred thousand dollar mark in access of thirty million dollars.

Today, the two most valuable yachts under the company ownership are a 168 foot Feadship constructed in 2007 and a 172 foot Feadship constructed in 1996. Despite the similarities in appearance on the outside, the interiors and materials used in construction are vastly different.

The 172 and 168-foot Feadships are constructed with steel hulls; however, the structure forming the upper decks is built opposite as far as materials are concerned.  A key difference between the vessels is the formation of the super structure. One utilizes steel while the other aluminum.

In addition to the vast difference in weight when comparing steel versus aluminum, additional efforts were made to reduce the draft.

Again, when comparing the two yachts despite the nearly identical appearance. Lightweight materials makeup the yachts interior to allow the vessel to enter more shallow waters.

Can You Charter The Gallant Lady

The Gallant Lady yachts are not available for charter. In the yachting industry, the vast majority of are available for charter to help cover annual operating costs between fuel, maintenance, crew, and other expenses.

Charters operate significantly different than privately owned vessels. Despite Gallant Lady being operated by a corporation. The people chartering the watercraft are the decision-makers for destinations, food, and entertainment. Essentially, depending on how much the guest will spend, the more extravagant the journey is.

Guests of the vessels are by invitation only and include business partners, company associates, and donors to charitable organizations operated by JM Family Enterprises. Unlike charters, the guests are flown to where the boat is docked or anchored and guided as to daily experiences while aboard. However, this does not mean that invitees lack the novelties of the most exclusive charters.

The Feadships accommodate up to ten guests with more than 11 crew members per yacht. Guest cabin space includes four staterooms and one main suite on each of the two Gallant Lady yachts.

What Is The Gallant Lady Yacht Location

South Florida between Deerfield Beach and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida are home to Gallant Lady yachts.

As you can imagine, vessels measuring more than 150 feet require deep water marinas with ample dockage space. One of the largest marinas is Bahia Mar, which provides dockage space when the vessels are not traveling.

When the Gallant Lady boats are traveling they stop in destinations including the Bahamas, Caribbean, Jacksonville, Charleston, and the Northeast.

The smaller Gallant Lady yachts are docked at varying South Florida marinas. When traveling, one to two vessels support the yacht by taking guests fishing on the Viking Gallant Lady fishing boat, cruising, to restaurants, snorkeling, and sightseeing.

Considering the number of boats in the fleet, the crew is substantial in size. Watercraft require significant maintenance; therefore, the crew constantly shifts to ensure all vessels are in tip-top shape.

Gallant Lady Yachts Are Premier Yachts Under The Umbrella Of A Superb Company

JM Family is notorious for signature yachts thanks to Jim Moran yacht owner. The yachts include black-tinted two story windows against bright white paintwork. The company is top notch when it comes to the way it treats its associates including those who host guests in the marine department. The next time you’re gazing from the beach in Georgia, South Carolina, and North you may see the vessels passing by.

Boat of the Week: Meet ‘Catch,’ a Classic 87-Foot Sportfishing Yacht That Just Got a Modern Makeover

Catch is a 78-foot Feadship built in 1984 that has undergone an extensive refit at the Dutch yard.

Pampering, for most boat owners, means the occasional wash and wax, an oil change, and perhaps a fresh coat of varnish for the woodwork.

Take the latest owner, a Florida-based Feadship enthusiast who bought the yacht just a year ago. After changing the name from Patriot to the more fishing-appropriate Catch , he felt a freshening was in order, even though the yacht was reportedly in near-perfect shape.

'Catch' is a 78-foot Feadship built in 1984 that has undergone an extensive refit at the Dutch yard.

But instead of commissioning a U.S. yard to do the work, in June last year he loaded his new pride and joy onto a transport ship and sent her back “home: to Feadship in Amsterdam, a trans-Atlantic journey of 4,600 miles.

During the 10-month refit, which has just been completed, Feadship’s team of artisans completely repainted the yacht, laid new solid-teak decks on that long foredeck, created an additional crew cabin below decks, modernized most of the soft furnishings, and did a top-to-bottom systems overhaul.

“The yacht was in excellent condition at the time of the sale, but the owner was determined to bring her back to the Netherlands to ensure his Feadship remains a Feadship,” said Pier Posthuma de Boer, director of Feadship Refit & Services.

'Catch' is a 78-foot Feadship built in 1984 that has undergone an extensive refit at the Dutch yard.

Peter Wilson, of Annapolis-based Marine Construction Management and the owner’s hands-on representative during the refit, explained that much of the previous work had focused on updating mechanical systems.

“It was time to make the interior spaces a little more contemporary, a little more sophisticated. Taking the yacht back to Feadship gave us the quality and craftsmanship we were looking for. And the yard was genuinely thrilled to be working on her again,” Wilson tells Robb Report .

After purchasing the yacht in 2005 from its original buyer, South Florida mega-auto dealer Jim Moran, who originally named it Gallant Lady , the new owner immediately sent the yacht to refit specialist Derecktor in Dania, Florida.

Here, during 15 months, the yacht, renamed Patriot , was taken down to the bare aluminum hull, and the interior completely stripped, reconfigured, and rebuilt using top-grade materials. At the same time, the enclosed bridge was removed and redesigned, and a major focus placed on shaving weight and reducing noise levels throughout the yacht.

The work also included replacing the original 1,320hp MTU diesels for a pair of brand-new 12V2000 MTUs, packing 1,800-hp a piece, that would raise the top speed to over 26 knots.

gallant lady yacht owner

The bill at the end of the 15 months was reportedly in excess of $10 million. A coffee table book created to show the details of the refit is said to have cost a staggering $250,000 to produce.

And it didn’t stop there. There was more major work carried out between 2015 and 2016, and again between 2019 and 2020. Top of the list during the work in 2020 included yet another complete hull re-paint.

“ Patriot ‘s owner created an absolute work of art with his extensive refits. His goal was to produce a state-of-the-art, one-off Gentleman’s sport yacht with flawless styling, quality construction and incredible performance,” says Chris Collins, former broker with Denison Yachting who ran the listing for the yacht before last year’s sale.

De Voogt is said to have based his design on the iconic American fishing “battlewagons” built by the Rybovich yard in Palm Beach County, Florida, with trademark broken shearlines, long, open foredecks and soaring aluminum tuna towers.

Today, Catch has luxurious accommodations for six guests in three, ensuite cabins, with the master suite forward and two twin cabins midships. Its big-windowed salon features a large galley stocked with Sub-Zero appliances. The quality of the cherry woodwork throughout is exquisite.

'Catch' is a 78-foot Feadship built in 1984 that has undergone an extensive refit at the Dutch yard.

Right now, the yacht is on its way back to the U.S. where the plan is to spend the summer in the Chesapeake and Northeast, before heading to Florida and the Bahamas for the winter—with, inevitably, some more pampering in its future.

GALLANT LADY is the eighth Feadship built for her owner. Being the first Feadship launched under the Royal DeVries designation as well as the first Feadship built with an interior utilizing lightweight aircraft technology to ensure her shallow draft, this yacht represents aesthetic and technical achievements second to none. GALLANT LADY is an ecofriendly yacht incorporating advanced innovations. Her owner is a founding member of the Seakeeper’s Society and the GALLANT LADY was built to reflect their longstanding commitment to the ocean environment.

Designed by her owner, the GALLANT LADY’s signature vertical windows, stacked decks and raked bow are accented with the debut of a three dimensional wave-like scrollwork and “F” signature on the bow. A recurring “X” theme can be found throughout the yacht and appears in design details as fine as the air conditioning vents or as grand as her polished stainless steel pillars.

Unique to a yacht of her size and quality, the shallow draft greatly increases her cruising capabilities, yet she is very stable thanks to her Quantum Marine zero speed stabilizers.

The rich interior showcases beautiful woods ranging from black walnut, sycamore, eucalyptus and myrtle burl. Stunning glasswork artfully combined with seventeen granites and marbles create the feel of romantic elegance. Custom-made Tai Ping carpets and silk panels accentuate luxurious textures throughout the yacht.

+ ACCOMMODATIONS

The GALLANT LADY accommodates ten guests in five staterooms.

The MAIN SALON defines classic elegance. A palette of black walnut, myrtle burl and eucalyptus complement rich fabrics and contemporary-styled furniture. Day or night the eight large windows create a spacious ambiance.

Moving forward to the MAIN FOYER there is a spectacular four-person circular elevator comprised of a monolithic pane of glass framed in polished stainless. Beautiful marble inlays custom cut in Holland were used to create a Koi pond motif on the elevator floor. The elevator itself required more

than a year to complete. The elevator is wide enough to be wheelchair accessible.

Starboard of the elevator is a dramatic floating-spiral staircase spanning two decks and taking full advantage of the GALLANT LADY’s vertical windows.

Forward of the elevator are two identical DAYHEADS featuring Blue Siena and Rosso Verona marbles.

Continuing forward, seven raised steps lead to a DINING SALON offering spectacular panoramic views. An opulent custom starburst mahogany veneer table easily extends to accommodate up to twelve guests. Azul Aran granite window sills complement myrtle burl and black walnut cabinetry. Custom built floor-to-ceiling cabinets conceal a full complement of Bernardaud china, Varga crystal and Christofle cutlery. A custom made and beautifully inlayed Tai Ping carpet adorns the floor.

Of special interest beneath the Dining Salon is one of Feadship’s most significant technological achievements. Concealed therein is a state-of-the-art ducted air conditioning system once reserved for the abundant space of deep fulldisplacement hull. A massive central air conditioning plant remains hidden under the semi-raised floor with large ducts incorporated into the ship’s structure. While previous designs would incorporate chilled-water air handlers in perimeter cabinetry, this innovative design permits the induction of cooled air through a decorative grill spanning the entire length of wall with warm-air returns discreetly concealed in the Dining Salon’s tray ceiling. This breakthrough design permitted window lines to be lowered significantly with an equally dramatic increase in spaciousness and view.

The GALLEY, redone in 2020, is conveniently located aft of the Dining Salon. Along with the spacious DINING SALON PANTRY and MAIN SALON PANTRY, these areas provide a streamlined approach for service to guests in either the Dining Salon or aft Main Salon. There are professional quality refrigerators and freezers, ample prep areas, and storage for crew to have a proper work environment. The pantries have granite and marbles throughout, along with beautiful woodwork creating a feeling of elegance.

The AFT MAIN DECK serves as the GALLANT LADY’s primary al fresco dining area with comfortable table seating for ten guests. A settee, small table and two chairs provide additional seating. Staircases on port and starboard provide direct access to the RECREATION PLATFORM and Lazarette. OWNER’s DECK, accessed by the elevator from the main deck (second deck amidship aft),for the utmost in privacy, the OWNER’s FOYER has two sets of double doors.

The full-beam OWNER’s STATEROOM is bright, radiant and the epitome of luxurious comfort. Fluted columns and curvaceous floor-to-ceiling doors generate a classic ambiance with giant windows bathing a king-size bed in natural light. The Owner’s Stateroom is a spectacular private space. The massive interior volume of GALLANT LADY is showcased in the OWNER’s BATHROOM area. These 125 square meters (408 square feet) of space are dedicated to his and her toilets, bidets, dressing areas and wardrobes. A walk-in shower and solarium with pantry complete the space. Designed to create a warm and mellow ambiance, Sunshine marble with accents and inlays of Afyon and Blue Siena are ed. The etched shower doors and walls have an “Orioles in Oleander” theme which was custom designed for the area. Variable controls allow the illumination of glass art to be adjusted for color and brightness.

An even finer vista is provided from the Owner’s private shaded AFT DECK area, which incorporates a spa pool and dining area.

Instead of the wheelhouse above the Dining Salon, GALLANT ADY has an intriguing CLUB LOUNGE forward, which ogether with the Owner’s Stateroom aft creates a true WNER’s DECK. Large windows, a high-back settee and a elcoming bar provide an ideal retreat to relax and admire he view.

The OWNER’s DECK PANTRY and CAPTAIN’s CABIN are just ortside and aft of the Club Lounge area. The Captain’s Cabin and athroom are fitted with White Calcutta marble with Verde Giada ccents. The cabin includes a desk, ensuite shower, remote engine oom alarm panel and B&G HS-2000 weather monitoring system.

BRIDGE DECK

With an elevated settee, the Wheelhouse is spacious enough o accommodate guests observing the running of the yacht. he bridge includes two Recaro Captain’s chairs and a world lass complement of navigational and electronic equipment.

Aft is the SHIP’s OFFICE containing ample work space. he SUN DECK has room to hold a 20’ tender as well as antilevered wing platforms to port and starboard. This deck rea also doubles as a spacious guest area for sunbathing or iewing the stars.

FLYBRIDGE / CROW’S NEST:

Located atop the Wheelhouse, this semi-enclosed flybridge as an ingenious window arrangement which can be adapted o any wind condition. There is port and starboard access to spacious observation wings which can be utilized by the Captain for enhanced visibility while maneuvering. The com station has been completely reconfigured & updated in 2020.

Guests are treated royally onboard GALLANT LADY, with a fabulous GUEST FOYER on the lower deck opening into the four spacious GUEST STATEROOMS. Her two queen and two twin guest staterooms are appointed with rich fabrics, handsome cabinetry crafted with three exotic woods and autiful Giallo Reale, Emparador and White Callacatta marbles. The bathrooms are of unprecedented size for any yacht. The bathrooms include custom-etched glasswork shower doors in “Humming Birds in Tulip Tree” and “Macaws & Shefelera” designs.

In addition to the Captain’s Cabin aft of the Club Lounge, there is berthing for ten crew members in five twin CREW CABINS forward of the engine room. Each cabin is outfitted with a full head, shower, sycamore cabinetry, light green Corian countertops and individual drop-down entertainment monitors with headsets for each bunk. The area contains a spacious CREW LOUNGE with L-shaped settee.

The LAUNDRY area is well designed with two sets of washers and dryers and ample counter workspace.

The technically advanced ENGINE ROOM is located at the center of the lower deck. This well- designed multi-level space is exceptionally well-lit, fully air conditioned and visible to the air conditioned CONTROL ROOM which is adjacent starboard and forward. The engine room epitomizes the high standards of a “GALLANT LADY."

GALLANT LADY

The 161-foot  GALLANT LADY , with an aluminum hull and composite superstructure, is the definition of casual elegance. Long oval windows create a distinctive profile and dramatic interior features. Exquisite control of proportion and line maintains harmony between the four decks. The hallmark of her design is the inspired flow throughout her rooms and decks, and the harmonious relationship of space. An entrance salon welcomes all with gracious informality; a single staircase transports guests from the grandeur of the foyer to the intimacy of the sun deck lounge. The yacht’s traffic flow is unique; two separate stair towers connect three decks, as does the interior crew stairs. Outside, discontinuous stairways link the exterior spaces from stern to crow’s nest, moving traffic both fore and aft.

Among the most detailed and beautiful interiors seen in yachts of similar stature,  GALLANT LADY   earned a prize at Showboats International Award for Best Motor Yacht Interior. This was a well-deserved honor, witnessed in the deep, satin-finished African mahogany used throughout her interior, which showcases joinery, inlays, and signature three-dimensional panels. Most of the stonework is granite, which adds beautiful color and greater versatility.

GALLANT LADY  delivers the ultimate in quiet, vibration-free cruising. To accommodate her owner’s request for close-in intracoastal cruising, she has a mere 6-foot, 10-inch draft and is capable of extraordinary beach access for a yacht of this size. To ensure the peacefulness of the four suites, their floors and walls are suspended from the yacht’s structural frame on special vibration-absorbing mounts. Sound is further dampened through high-tech construction techniques that employ a sandwich of acoustic materials. The padded-silk wall coverings above the mahogany chair rail are the final strategic element, soaking up any last traces of ambient noise. The curved wall at the back of the stair column not only looks beautiful, but cutting-edge materials beneath the silk upholstery absorb noise that might otherwise travel between decks. She combines the best of new technology and traditional beauty, providing an unforgettable experience for those lucky enough to experience the aptly named  GALLANT LADY .

U.S. Eyes $156 Million Yacht in Dubai Linked to a Russian Oligarch

The U.S. Justice Department is taking steps to seize the Madame Gu, a 324-foot luxury yacht, but it will be diplomatically thorny.

By Kate Kelly ,  Michael Forsythe and Julian E. Barnes

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — On a clear morning in late October, the jewel-blue hull of the Madame Gu, one of the world’s most luxurious superyachts, gleamed, its aluminum rails shimmering in the sun. Workers on the pier said they had recently seen people painting, cleaning and generally keeping the ship with its helipad and six guest staterooms in pristine condition.

In past years, such a scene would not have been noteworthy. Many superyachts come and go from Dubai’s Mina Rashid Marina, best known as the home of the Queen Elizabeth 2, the trans-Atlantic ocean liner-turned-hotel that dominates the waterfront here.

But Russia’s war in Ukraine has turned an otherwise routine tableau into a diplomatic battleground between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, an important American ally that has established itself as a safe haven for Russian money and assets out of the reach of U.S. sanctions.

The $156 million Madame Gu epitomizes the problem. In June, the United States designated the vessel, which is linked to Andrei Skoch, a Russian steel magnate and lawmaker under sanctions, as blocked property. That means the yacht cannot use American companies for its upkeep, employ U.S. citizens or even use the dollar. The Justice Department is now taking steps to seize the Madame Gu, according to people with knowledge of the plan.

But the United States can’t seize property in a sovereign nation without permission from its government. The Emirates, which has taken a friendlier position toward Moscow, is balking at cooperating with the United States to pursue oligarchs, American officials said. The Kremlin is also using oligarch-controlled companies in the Emirates to acquire war supplies that the West is trying to keep out of Russia’s reach, according to a Western official involved in the sanctions effort against Russia.

Emirati officials did not comment specifically on the Madame Gu but said in a statement that they took their role “protecting the integrity of the global financial system extremely seriously.”

A closer examination of Russian assets in the Emirates shows that even before the war in Ukraine, Dubai had become a playground for Russians with links to President Vladimir V. Putin. At least 38 businessmen or officials with ties to the Russian president own homes in Dubai that are collectively valued at more than $314 million, according to the Center for Advanced Defense Studies. Five of those owners are under U.S. sanctions.

Since the Russian invasion, Dubai has established itself as a safe haven for Russian yachts and aircraft unable to sail or fly elsewhere. After Russian jets were barred from the European Union in late February, the Emirates became the destination for 14 percent of all private flights leaving Russia, up from 3 percent before the invasion.

“It’s frustrating when you see huge assets that are sitting out there and it appears that the country is not cooperating,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, referring to the Emirates. “It would be nice if there were more common cause against Putin while he’s busy shelling hospitals and schools.”

Mr. Whitehouse is sponsoring legislation that would use proceeds of the sales of seized Russian assets to help rebuild Ukraine. Senior officials at the Treasury and State Departments have also complained publicly about the situation.

U.S. officials view the presence of superyachts in places like Dubai and Bodrum, Turkey , as a symptom of wider Russian circumvention of sanctions and continued access to financial markets. Yachts have also come to symbolize the decadence of Russia’s oligarchs, especially at a time when Russian soldiers are scrounging for body armor and sleeping bags on the front lines.

Pursuing the Madame Gu

Built by the Dutch firm Feadship and put into service in 2013, the Madame Gu has a large helicopter pad on its forecastle with a hangar underneath that can double as a squash court when the chopper isn’t on board. The vessel has berthing for 36 crew members, according to one trade magazine.

Mr. Skoch, a member of Russia’s Parliament who is linked to assets worth billions of dollars, according to U.S. court filings, has had sanctions imposed on him twice by the United States, first in 2018 and then after Russia’s invasion this year. The Treasury Department has cited his “longstanding ties to Russian organized criminal groups.”

Mr. Skoch could not be reached and did not respond to messages left at his office at Parliament.

In an interview in October about the government’s broader efforts to go after the assets of oligarchs, Andrew Adams, a federal prosecutor leading the Department of Justice’s KleptoCapture task force, declined to discuss the Madame Gu. But the United States, he said, is warning companies they must not do business with individuals and assets under sanctions. The government, he said, will pursue oligarch-owned assets whose sale could be used to aid Ukraine.

“Where we know there is an asset that can potentially provide significant remuneration for Ukraine, that obviously is an attractive case to pursue,” he said.

U.S. officials are likely to use the case they made for impounding a $90 million Airbus business jet linked to Mr. Skoch in August as a blueprint for seizing the Madame Gu, said people familiar with the plan.

That means investigators will aim to show that the owner of the vessel, or the companies that have been providing services to it, have intersected with the U.S. financial system.

“If there are U.S. dollars or a U.S. nexus associated with supporting this vessel, massive enforcement actions could take place,” said Adam M. Smith, a former official overseeing sanctions at the Treasury Department. Companies that provide support to entities under sanctions could potentially face their own sanctions, said Mr. Smith, who is now a lawyer at Gibson Dunn in Washington.

This year the United States has carried out two high-profile seizures of yachts tied to Russians under sanctions, working with cooperative governments. The $300 million Amadea was taken in Fiji in May and sailed to San Diego under an American flag. In April, the United States worked with Spanish police to seize the $90 million Tango.

A Problematic Partner

Diplomatically, the Emirates has been reluctant to take a clear anti-Russian position when it comes to the war in Ukraine. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, recently met with Mr. Putin in St. Petersburg, and the Emirati foreign minister recently hosted his Russian counterpart. Yet Sheikh Mohammed has also talked with Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, more than once and recently gave the country $100 million in humanitarian aid.

The United States has publicly expressed dismay over the mixed messages.

During a visit to Dubai in June, Wally Adeyemo, the U.S. deputy treasury secretary, warned of the need for vigilance and proactive steps in combating Russian evasion. That same month Barbara Leaf, the State Department’s under secretary for Near East Affairs, said at a congressional hearing that regarding the Emirates, she was “not happy at all with the record at this point” on sanctions enforcement. Mr. Adeyemo reiterated his concerns in a meeting with Emirati officials in October in Washington.

A senior State Department official said in a statement to The New York Times that the agency continues “to reinforce the importance of conducting enhanced due diligence to prevent sanctions evasion and investigating allegations of such activity” to the Emirates.

The Treasury Department declined to comment on the Madame Gu or the relationship with the Emirates.

Last month, the Treasury Department announced it had placed sanctions on an Emirates-based company, Constellation Advisors Ltd., that the American government said was operating on behalf of a nephew of another Russian oligarch, Suleiman Kerimov. Mr. Kerimov, according to American court documents, was the owner of the Amadea superyacht .

American officials are also worried the Russian government is using the Emirates to acquire military supplies for its war in Ukraine. On Nov. 15, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on two Emirates-based transportation firms that had worked with another Iranian firm under sanctions, which in turn had helped transport drones and personnel from Iran to Russia.

Moored in Dubai

Based on a recent visit to Dubai’s Mina Rashid Marina , where the Madame Gu is moored, it is clear that international companies are playing a critical role in its care.

The Emirates-based company DP World, through its subsidiary P&O Marinas , oversees the pier where the Madame Gu is moored. Employees from another DP World subsidiary , World Security, staff the small guard box at the entrance. That makes DP World, which is owned by Dubai’s royal family, potentially vulnerable to American sanctions.

DP World “fully complies with all applicable local and national laws and intends to continue doing the same regarding the Madame Gu and other vessels utilizing our services,” said Adal Mirza, a spokesman for the company. He added that DP World had not yet heard from the United States or other countries that had placed Mr. Skoch under sanctions, including Britain and the European Union.

A generator set that dock workers said in late October was powering the Madame Gu — two container-like structures near its stern — bore the distinctive orange logo of Aggreko , a British company. The generator set was connected to the superyacht by thick cords; one of the containers was emitting grayish exhaust.

At the Mina Rashid Marina, soon after Aggreko was contacted by The Times, workers removed the generator. “Having identified that the generator was being used to power a vessel that is allegedly connected to a sanctioned person, we immediately terminated this rental and have since recovered the generator,” the company said in a statement.

Mr. Mirza, the DP World spokesman, said the Aggreko generator had been replaced with one from a local supplier.

P&O Marinas arranged for the diesel generator to provide power for the Madame Gu because that part of the pier, a holding area, has no shore-supplied electric power, said a port official in Dubai, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press.

“At the end of the day, if the U.A.E. hasn’t imposed sanctions, it’s not really their job to enforce other countries’ laws within their borders,” said Nabeel Yousef, a Washington-based partner at the law firm Freshfields, where he runs the sanctions practice. Nevertheless, “companies should not take comfort in the fact that their country has not imposed sanctions,” he added, “because even the smallest connection to the U.S. can lead to U.S. penalties.”

There has also been a notable absence onboard the Madame Gu in recent weeks: a flag. Unlike other ships moored nearby, including the Quantum Blue, a superyacht linked to the billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the Madame Gu appears to be stateless, apparently having been deflagged by the Cayman Islands.

Cayman Islands officials didn’t respond to an emailed inquiry about the ship’s status.

If DP World were to face fallout from U.S. sanctions enforcers, it wouldn’t be the first time the company has been the focus of attention in Washington. In 2006, DP World was seeking to manage some terminal operations at six American ports but dropped out of the deal after a bipartisan uproar in Congress.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Russian missiles streaked into Kyiv  in the biggest assault on the Ukrainian capital in weeks, injuring several people and damaging several buildings.

Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s top national security official, made a secret trip to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine.

Under pressure to come up with billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s military, the E.U. said that it had devised a legal way to use frozen Russian assets  to help arm Ukraine.

Symbolism or Strategy?: Ukrainians say that defending places with little strategic value is worth the cost in casualties and weapons , because the attacking Russians pay an even higher price. American officials aren’t so sure.

Elaborate Tales: As the Ukraine war grinds on, the Kremlin has created increasingly complex fabrications online  to discredit Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, and undermine the country’s support in the West.

Targeting Russia’s Oil Industry: With its army short of ammunition and troops to break the deadlock on the battlefield, Kyiv has increasingly taken the fight beyond the Ukrainian border, attacking oil infrastructure deep in Russian territory .

About Gallant Lady

The third Gallant Lady was far more of a yacht - the previous two Gallant Ladys being a Sports Fisherman. In 1984, the owner invited a team from Feadship to come on board his yacht at the time with one simple question: ''Can you build something like this - but better?' The resulting 40.07m Gallant Lady launched a year later, had more of a Feadship flavor to it than its predecessor, especially in the styling of the bow and the cockpit design.

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

gallant lady yacht owner

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

gallant lady yacht owner

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
