Thirty Z44s were sold over the next few years, despite the economic recession the world was experiencing. It’s stunning lines combined with a silent and smooth ride was attracting owner after owner. The Z44 offers the finest interior finishes, as well, for those with the most discriminating taste. There isn’t anything left out that had worked before, as they’ve steered closely to ensure the Z44 keeps with traditional craftsmanship, yet does not leave out any of what modern technology now has to offer.

Curves, curves and more curves…mmmmmnnmmm… the type of curves that require 42 different molds. With double curved windows in the hull, all eyes will have no break in following the curved lines throughout. Offering it’s discerning owners a rest-assured ease in operating her with a high bow that provides protection against high seas and it’s double chines deflect the waves to keep everyone aboard nice and dry.

Keeping her speed to 35 knots, instead of its competitors 40 knots, was intentional to prevent slamming in the waves. Her joystick system is just that - a joy - as it will enable anyone the capability to run and dock her with the greatest of ease.

While Sietse Koopmans is a born sailor, his path to the ownership of a yacht building company was not entirely straight-forward. Growing up in the Netherlands, Koopmans would spend his weekends navigating the waterways, canals and lakes of this low-lying and seafaring nation, before earning his sea legs on the choppy waters of the North Sea. As an adult, Koopmans established a successful engineering firm before graduating to the ownership of his own personal yacht, in which he circumnavigated the globe, covering more than 100,000 nautical miles and visiting 46 countries in the process. To gain a better understanding of boats Koopman then volunteered at a boatbuilding firm, and liked this experience so much that he bought the company, modernized its practices and renamed it. And so Zeelander Yachts was born.

With a factory located on the banks of the picturesque Lek River in the Zeeland province of the Netherlands, Zeelander’s first model, the Z44, was unveiled to the public at the 2008 Monaco Boat Show. The Z44 was characterized by a distinctive European style, but with North American creature comforts and amenities for a truly widespread appeal. Entertaining space was at the heart of the yacht, with a collapsible swimming platform, teak-decked aft and spacious salon making the vessel a superb option for the day-boating crowd. Its ergonomic exterior, almost entirely free of straight lines or right-angles, was fashioned with help from industry titans Cor D Rover and Frank Mulder and was inspired by the graceful profiles of European sports cars like Porsche. This dayboat drew such universal acclaim that in just a few short years more than 30 models were sold to buyers across Europe and, in particular, the United States. Today Zeelander sells so many of their yachts to North American clients that the firm operates a customer service facility in Florida’s Fort Lauderdale to provide better after-care for the Zeelander community.

Perhaps because of Koopmans engineering background, Zeelander yachts are developed utilizing some of the most hi-tech equipment and industrial processes possible. Zeelander has pioneered the use of virtually silent motor systems such as gas turbine generator sets, which also come with the added benefit of much reduced effluent discharge. Similarly, Zeelander models make use of the latest advancements in battery energy storage for increased fuel efficiency, while the firm’s yachts boast S-shaped sheerlines that not only look great but deliver increased stability at sea.

Zeelander’s most recent models include the Z55, launched in 2015, and the firm’s flagship model, the Z72, that debuted in 2019. Yet the firm have ambitions for the production of even larger yachts in the future, such as the Z164, a concept model currently in the embryonic stages of its development. In 2020 Zeelander expanded their shipyard, located a short distance outside the port city of Rotterdam, by some 5,000 square feet, a move that will allow the company to work simultaneously on the construction of five yachts. A recent collaboration with globally renowned Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, meanwhile, ensures that Zeelander Yacht interiors remain as modern and stylish as ever.

Zeelander Z72

Zeelander’s flagship model is a 72-foot work of art. Designed in partnership with Cor D Rover, this sleek yacht boasts sparkling brightwork, a hull finished in water-resistant navy blue paint, and sublime curved edges that glide through the water as swiftly and smoothly as an arrow through the air. Interior spaces include three lower-deck staterooms, including a full-beam master suite at the bow, and a saloon, formal dining room and galley on the main deck. These are tastefully decorated with lacquered mahogany panelling, white leather furnishings, Esthec railing and beige carpeting for a sedate and refined atmosphere. Privacy is guaranteed with the use of windows that tint at the touch of a button, while a good night’s sleep is ensured through the use of noise-minimizing generator equipment. Spacious outdoor entertaining areas on the main deck mean that more than 20 guests can party the night away aboard this yacht, while the extendable swimming platform provides a “Cabana” style beach club aft-deck of 110 square feet. The yacht also features a larger than expected tender garage with plenty of room for your water toys, and can be fitted with rod holders and other fishing accessories for those who want to make this the ultimate adventure yacht. Triple Volvo IPS Penta 950 engines power this vessel to top speeds well in excess of 40 knots, while at pacey cruising speeds of 24 knots the yacht has an enviable oceanic range of 640 nautical miles.

Zeelander Z55

A mid-sized sports cruiser that is sure to turn heads as it glides into the most desirable destination marinas around the world, the Z55 measures some 55 feet in length when the aft swimming platform is fully extended. A free-flowing main deck space boasts an L-shaped sofa to the helm, a kitchen-bar area ideal for entertaining, and a U-shaped sofa to the aft for intimate afternoon gatherings. Two below-deck staterooms and crew quarters for a total occupancy of 5, and a dynamic, curved kitchen bar with full amenities mean that this yacht is ideal for weekend trips around the Caribbean or to the Florida Keys. Decor is neutral and tasteful throughout, with grey oak surrounds, washed teak flooring, veneered composite panelling and stainless-steel fixtures delivering a polished and refined ambiance. A pair of Volvo Penta IPS 1350 engines, and a striking deep-V hull give this yacht power and stability as it races through the waves, with top speeds of up to 42 knots.

Zeelander Z44

The original Zeelander, and the yacht that sealed this innovative firm’s reputation, the Z44 is a compact day yacht that won the title for “World’s Best Superboat” at the 2019 Motor Boat Awards held in London. Though only 44 feet in length, this vessel has the feel and finish of a much larger, and much more expensive, superyacht, with gleaming brightwork and refined detailing delivering the wow factor. The yacht is also a pleasure to ride, with a high bow and double chine providing protection from spray, and twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 engines giving a full throttle top speed of 36 knots. Two below deck, en suite staterooms provide occupancy for four guests, with entertaining likely to take place on the yacht’s large aft deck, equipped with a fitted, U-shaped sofa and collapsible transom that doubles as a bathing platform.

Reviewed: Zeelander Z72

You can spot a Zeelander’s profile from afar, particularly because of its high bow and signature raked and rounded transom. Essentially, Zeelanders are modern commuter yachts with a retro twist. Credit for the styling goes to Dutch designer Cor D. Rover. His first Zeelander, the Z44, launched in 2008 and that model has since been joined by the Z55 , and now the Z72.

I got aboard Hull No. 1 of the new flagship along the river Maas in the Netherlands, where Zeelanders are built. The river runs across the top of the Port of Rotterdam, from whence this Z72 will ship to Massachusetts to replace her owner’s previous Z55 at his summer home on Nantucket. She will winter in the Bahamas.

Stepping into the cockpit, I first saw the Z72’s bar, which is a work of art. What my eye initially registered as high-gloss woodwork, wasn’t. It was a paint job that created a faux grain for the bar, barstool backs and window frame. The same treatment is given to the aft deck’s table, the radome, the windshield surround and the cap rails, where the effect is like a zebrano wood on steroids.

The window at the afterdeck bar drops down to connect the space with the galley aft, beyond which are booth seating and the helm station in the salon. The helm has three seats with reversible backs. Visibility is uninterrupted. Light and bright are often overused terms in our business, but not in this case. There is really very little structure to obscure a nearly 360-degree view. I’d go so far as to say this yacht has some of the cleanest sightlines I can remember. The windshield is a simply whopping piece of curved glass from U.S.-based ProCurve at roughly 10 feet, 8 inches wide and 3 feet, 6 inches high.

The owner of this Z72 selected dark leather tiles for the sole throughout the lower deck—an interesting choice. I liked them for their natural patination, which should improve with age and wear, and because they’re softer and a little warmer underfoot than a hard laminate.

Being a boutique builder, Zeelander offers several lower-deck configurations on the Z72. This first hull has three en suite staterooms, with the owner’s stateroom forward. There’s at least 6 feet of space between the master’s door and the berth, with square-shaped hull windows on either side, creating an open feeling.

This owner configured the crew cabin with a single berth; it also can come with twins. Accessed via an afterdeck hatch, the crew space is finished to a similar standard as the guest staterooms, including having a rain shower in the head.

The Z72 is not just stylish. She offers brisk performance. Standard engines are triple 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950s, which should deliver 28 to 29 knots at top hop, according to Zeelander. Hull No. 1 has the biggest engine combination available: triple 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1350s with Q7 props and Active Ride Control trim tabs. The wing pods steer with the middle pod is fixed.

At just under half-load, this Z72 was on plane in a little more than 10 seconds. In about 30 seconds, she whisked along at a hair over 42 knots with the diesels spinning at their maximum 2,370 rpm. She delivered a 40-knot average from reciprocal headings along a reasonably fast-flowing waterway.

In proper cruising mode with full tanks and throttled back to 10 knots (600 to 650 rpm), the Z72 could cover more than 1,800 nautical miles before heading for the fuel pumps, and that’s allowing for a 10 percent reserve. At 35 knots, owners could manage about 450 nautical miles, which means just over 13 hours, or a full day’s fast cruise. Most are likely to want something in between.

Whereas a Dutch contract-molding specialist laminates smaller Zeelander models, an Estonian contractor produced the Z72’s hull and superstructure. Both sections are infused using vinylester resin and closed-cell foams, and then post-cured at 140 degrees Fahrenheit for four days. The construction felt solid and relatively quiet on the water. My sound meter registered a little more than 77 decibels at the helm at her top speed; 65 decibels is the level of normal conversation.

The Z72’s tender garage is an unusual feature for a yacht of this size, and its transverse configuration is noteworthy. The garage is amidships with a lift-up door to starboard and large enough to accommodate a Williams Turbojet 325 plus a smaller personal watercraft or a rack of Seabobs. There’s a watertight crawl-through door from the tender garage to the engine room, with main engine-room access from a cockpit hatch that lifts up.

Beyond the IPS engines, other notable options aboard this yacht include metallic paint, a Quick gyrostabilizer, Volvo Penta’s Dynamic Positioning System, a five-year factory warranty on the engines, and various TracPhone and Vision Marine equipment. The sun pad aft can be swapped for a hot tub.

The ability to design a yacht with a retro aesthetic that could have wide appeal, and the use of a thoroughly modern build process, is no small combination. Zeelander has achieved it in the Z72. Her style should stand the test of time.

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag.
