CL Yachts CLB65 Reviewed

The CL Yachts CLB65 pairs traditional good looks and a timeless profile with impeccable planning for short-handed cruising by owner-operators. It’s also the first CL Yachts model with an aft galley, a design choice that underlines a clear objective: entertaining.

Seaworthy touches can be found in spots such as the cockpit, where a joystick control station is concealed in each cabin side to make docking painless, and where husky warping winches are on each stern quarter to take the muscle out of line handling. But at the same time, the entire after bulkhead of the yacht’s house is glass that folds up or hinges to the side, opening the salon for alfresco living. With the galley aft, the chef can pass food to the casual dining settee to starboard or across the cockpit bar to the outdoor table. Inside, a U-shaped couch is forward with a cleverly designed coffee table that morphs into a laptop desk.

The decor is also designed to look timeless and, for owner-operators, to be easily maintained. Off-white bulkheads are accented by exquisite joinerwork. The wraparound galley has Corian counters, a Bosch four-burner cooktop, a Vitrifrigo stand-up fridge, two under-counter drawer fridges and a convection oven.  Stowage reaches into the farthest corners, and dishware is secured in a dedicated pull-out drawer. A wine chiller is accessible from the salon or cockpit.

At the helm, there’s a double-wide Stidd seat abaft dual 17-inch Garmin multifunction displays. The list of standard electronics spans three pages and includes Fantom 54 radar and VHF radios. Four cameras (aft, on the side decks and in the engine room) share the monitors, and the entire package is duplicated on the flybridge. Other controls include the Volvo Penta IPS joysticks, a CZone electrical panel and Volvo Penta active Interceptor trim tabs. Next to the skipper, a pantograph watertight door opens to the side deck.

The side decks are comfortably wide at 20 inches with high coamings capped by 40-inch-high rails for safety. They lead to a sitting area on the foredeck with a couch and chaises, ideal for a private moment at anchor or when Med-moored. A stout Maxwell windlass handles the 200 feet of chain rode.

Another interesting detail is that the CLB65 is built on a shortened version of the CLB72 hull, so this yacht has the nearly 20-foot beam of the longer yacht. Designed by Howard Apollonio, this hull design is noted for its comfortable seakeeping ability. Construction is of exceptional quality, with multiaxial E-glass using blister-preventing vinylester resin. Carbon fiber is used in load-bearing areas, and the CLB65 is built to the RINA class that starts with the original drawings and continues with regular inspections during construction.

When it comes to accommodations, the CLB65 takes full advantage of that wide beam. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is precisely amidships for minimum motion at sea. Its king-size berth is offset to allow for two full-height closets, bureaus and a vanity. The master’s head (with a one-piece ceramic sole) has Euro-style his-and-hers sinks with Grohe faucets, while the stall shower has a wall spray and a rain shower. Hidden outside in the companionway is a full-size GE washer-and-dryer setup.

The forepeak VIP has an island queen-size berth, a cedar-lined closet, hidden lighting and a vanity. Its en suite head also has the ceramic sole and stall shower. Off the center corridor is the en suite guest stateroom, with twin berths that convert to a double. On the CLB65 that I got aboard, a utility room abaft the engine room was optioned to become an en suite crew cabin.

Up top, the flybridge is accessed via gentle stairs. There are two wraparound seating areas, along with a dining table, a fridge, an ice maker, a grill and a sink. Much of this area is shaded by the fiberglass hardtop that is integral to the radar arch.

The engine room showcases CL Yachts’ commercial shipbuilding experience with rails around the engines for safe underway checks, space to access all systems, and meticulously labeled wiring and plumbing that is secured to high standards. A shiplike electrical panel fills the forward bulkhead, and oil and water filters are at knee level. The 27 kW Onan genset sits on a raised platform, and a Delta-T system reduces moisture. The CLB65 I was aboard also had the optional Seakeeper gyro, CMC at-rest stabilizer, Blue Water watermaker and Besenzoni passerelle.

Power for the CLB65 is a pair of 800 hp Volvo Penta IPS1050 diesels, which provided fingertip precision for maneuvering and docking, and a surprising turn of speed. This yacht hit 24.4 knots and settled into a 21-knot cruise at a cost of about 50 gallons per hour, a testament to Apollonio’s slippery hull form when moving 40-plus tons of luxurious fitments.

With beautiful lines, impeccable detailing, a robust build and solid performance, the CL Yachts CLB65 is worth a look for owner-operators who want timeless styling, cruising adventures, and at-sea entertaining with friends and family.

Volvo Penta Interceptor System

Conventional trim tabs raise or lower a yacht’s bow when running, or correct heel from wind or weight. Volvo Penta Interceptors, part of the company’s Electronic Vessel Control setup, have an auto mode to adjust the boat to its most favorable running angle. But unlike hinged trim tabs, Interceptors drop vertically to create the same effect. They’re built with corrosion-free materials, so they do not require protective anodes.

What Is RINA Class?

RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) is an international classification society for boatbuilding safety in design, construction and maintenance. RINA’s team starts by approving yacht-design drawings, and then monitors vessel construction and provides periodic surveys to maintain a yacht’s RINA status.

The midsize motoryacht will make an appearance at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show.

CLB65 represents a new entry point into CL Yachts’ lineup, but what she lacks in length overall she makes up for with luxurious features inspired by her larger sisterships.

With standard twin 800-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS1050s the 64-foot, 6-inch yacht can hit an impressive top end of 27 knots and cruise at a very respectable 21 knots. The confidence-inspiring maneuverability of the Volvo Penta pod system is always helpful, whether the boat is out at sea, or making intricate maneuvers as she pulls into a crowded marina.

CLB65 has multiple helm stations – one on the main deck and one on the flying bridge, so that owner-operators have a choice of staying protected or fully enjoying the marine environment around them. Additionally, two wing control stations to either side of the aft deck are incredibly helpful when getting in and out of marinas.

An aft galley on the main deck is a first for CL Yachts. With a hinged door and flip-up glass, the main deck can be fully opened. It’s an exciting development that makes food service to the salon or the cockpit equally easy, and helps make CLB65 an excellent entertainment platform.

The salon has multiple seating options, including a large U-shaped settee forward and to port that will be a focal point for conversation.

The yacht was imagined with volume and comfort in mind. To that end, it was built on the same hull mold as the larger CLB72, and has the same beam as that boat. The benefits of this choice are obvious to anyone who steps aboard, particularly in the full-beam, en-suite, amidships master, which has extraordinary volume and remarkable natural light. A forepeak en-suite VIP carries on the 5-star-hotel vibe with a luxurious island-queen berth and lots of stowage.

A spacious guest stateroom to port has twin berths that are perfect for guests. All staterooms on the lower deck have opening port lights to enhance ventilation.

Throughout the interior – which can be done in either walnut or hickory – beautiful oiled veneers and a neutral color palette mean the CLB65 is effortlessly cool and timelessly stylish.

As for outdoor entertainment spaces, the yacht has an expansive flybridge with everything needed for alfresco cruising, including multiple settees, a barbecue and wet bar at amidships, with a hardtop to provide shade for the whole proceeding. A foredeck lounge with a sunpad provides a further entertainment area, and one which will provide much welcome privacy when this vessel is moored stern-to.

The RINA-certified yacht will be in attendance at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show, where it will surely set the crowds to gawking thanks to its design and a bevy of exciting features.

A full range of speed numbers has not yet been released, but the top end is said to be 27 knots, which should make cruise somewhere in the neighborhood of 21 knots.

Both the lower and upper helms are complemented by seating areas so that guests can comfortably keep the captain company on both day trips and longer weekend hops.

Another owner-operator feature is the aft galley, a first for CL Yachts. The placement of this space accomplishes two things. One, a chef can serve both the interior and exterior portions of the main deck with equal ease. And two, much like the captain, the chef will be able to socialize while cooking.

“Volume and comfort were of utmost importance to us during this yacht’s design,” says Martina Lo, CL Yachts’ director, during a tour of the boat.

The glazing in the hull, as well as the large windows (some of which open) surrounding the salon are part of what Lo refers to as “a blurring between outside and inside.” That effect is heightened by the interior’s neutral color palette, highlighted by some truly beautiful oiled teak on pieces like the salon’s dinette.

One area where the CLB65 may not be to an owner-operator’s standards is the engine room. It’s an orderly space with a white gelcoat sole good for spotting spills. But headroom is low in some spots.

Despite that, the CLB65 has a well-thought-out layout and design, with genuine pedigree. With five generations of boatbuilders in the Lo family, it’s no surprise that the clan figured out ways to make its newest baby stand out.

CL Yachts’ new CLB65 is built for boaters

The new CLB65 isn’t the flashiest vessel in its class, but it’s among the most practical for a couple that wants to cruise. Yacht Style steps aboard. Words: Michael Verdon; Photos: CL Yachts

CLB65 has a top speed of 30 knots with the optional 1,000hp engines

One of two CL Yachts models that premiered at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last October, CLB65 is a completely different proposition to the flagship CLX96 that debuted alongside it. For starters, it’s for buyers keener on island-hopping than doing a non-stop, 1,000-mile voyage.

I’d consider owners of this motor yacht to be boaters rather than yachties, for one big reason: CLB65 can be handled by a couple with many sea miles under their belts, although CL Yachts has included a captain’s stateroom at the rear of the boat.

Even though it’s the baby of the CL Yachts portfolio, the interior size is impressive since it’s built on the CLB72 sistership’s hull. Along with the 65ft 9in overall length is a 19ft 10in beam, which is 2-3ft wider than many European-built models of similar length. That adds up to a lot of extra living space.

The exterior areas offer generous spaces with smart layouts that should please any cruising couple. The aft cockpit has a table and lounge, while the two side walkways lead to a lounge and sunbed in front. This bow area is significant because it’s divided between socialising and the working end for anchoring. The high stainless rails are designed for moving around safely in choppy seas.

The flybridge also has plenty of room to roam, with a hardtop, upper helm station, two separate lounging zones, outdoor grill and open area at the rear. The deck can easily accommodate 10 to 15 guests.

There’s also an outsized swim platform at the stern for either carrying a tender, or just providing easy access to the water. It’s about 4ft deep and spans almost the full beam of the hull, so three or four guests in bathing suits could use it as another place to hang out, at least in calm seas.

Hull number one at Fort Lauderdale was powered by twin Volvo Penta 1050s with IPS drives. This standard engine option will deliver a top end of about 27 knots, which given the IPS manoeuvrability, is highly respectable. If you want a bit more oomph at top end, upgraded Volvo IPS 1350s are also available.

A BOAT FOR BOATERS

My first impressions of the interior, with its galley aft, side aft cabinets and forward saloon, were mixed. The white upholstery and other materials, mixed with the walnut woodwork, were nice, bright and functional, but basic compared to some of the brand’s Italian and British competitors.

But then it hit me: this boat doesn’t have to be flashy or ultramodern. It has to be practical for that boating couple wanting to use it as a second home on the water. It doesn’t need the Italian marble, the leather-clad walls or mirrored insets to appeal to that real-boater couple, who might well be embarrassed by the excess anyway.

There was a nice sense of simplicity about the main deck, especially in the open-plan saloon forward and dining area starboard of the aft galley. Due to the rear opening window and cockpit door, both interior and exterior can be joined for dining, so two groups can eat simultaneously if there are a lot of guests.

The galley has a convection stove, large fridge, freezer and sink, with windows that give the chef an ocean view. Just forward, portside, is a large lounge with a C-shaped sofa and a table beside an electric up/down window.

To starboard, the raised helm platform with two seats allows a measure of privacy for driving the yacht, which offers excellent navigation, due to the large windows and easy-read consoles on the dash.

Behind the helm is a storage cabinet with a white top that matches the rest of the interior. You could spend many hours in this saloon, either under way or at anchor. The design firm Interiors by Carmen created two interiors for the boat, the walnut version we viewed and another with hickory.

LIGHT & BRIGHT

On the lower deck, the three staterooms are divided into a VIP forward, a midships master suite, and a twin cabin, all with en-suite bathrooms.

The master is a handsome combination of walnut cabinets, drawers and trim, with a queen-sized bed placed in the centre. The en-suite features two stylish round sinks, large toilet, and an enormous glassed-in shower with enough space for a wood bench for seating. Details like this emphasise the 65’s liveability.

Considering it’s in the bow, the VIP is also generously sized, with the bed in the centre and cabinetry around. The head, while not as large as in the master, also has a glassed-in shower area (again with wooden bench seat) that delivers on the sense of space. To port, a twin guest cabin with en-suite bathroom rounds out the accommodation.

From the crew cabin accessed from the swim platform, I had a chance to peek inside the engine room, and while it was clean and tidy, headroom was tight, which is slightly problematic if you’re a cruiser who likes to do preventative maintenance. Still, all things considered, it’s a minor problem considering the smart layout of the rest of the yacht.
