Victorious might look shiny-new, tied to her superyacht dock at this week’s Miami International Boat Show. But it took more the 18 years to get here.

Rewind to 2006. The steel-and-aluminum shell of a 252-foot explorer yacht is sitting in a shipyard in Santiago, Chile, with no money to complete. Kiwi serial yacht owner and billionaire Graeme Hart puts in an offer, and has the yacht towed to his native New Zealand for completion.

After two years of work, Hart switches his attention to his new superyacht project, the 380-foot Kleven-built explorer called Ulysses . Eight years later, he sells the yacht in 2016 to Turkish entrepreneur Vural Ak. After having the yacht towed to Istanbul, Ak he creates a shipyard, appropriately called AKYacht. The yard extends the hull’s length 18 feet and creates a beautiful interior. Victorious is finally completed in 2021. The following year it receives a “2022 Robb Report Best of the Best” award.

After three years of circling the globe, Victorious is now looking for a new owner, with an asking price of $129 million.

37,000 Nautical Miles Without Starting an Engine

Part of the remarkable story about Victorious was that, before its completion in 2021, it was towed a total of 37,000 miles, from Chile to New Zealand, then New Zealand to Istanbul, Turkey. Starting life as the 252-foot Gin Tonic II at the Marco Yachts yard in Santiago, the bare-bones vessel was bought by New Zealand billionaire Graeme Hart in 2011. The empty hull was then towed, along with 100 containers of parts, across the Southern Ocean to Auckland. After on-again, off-again work, the yacht was sold to Vural Ak in 2016, who had her towed back to Turkey. 

Built for a Sportscar Enthusiast

The checkered-flag burgee on Victorious ‘s bow gives a hint as to the interests of its high-profile owner, Turkish billionaire Vural Ak. The founder of Turkey’s biggest rental-car firm, Intercity, is said to have an eclectic collection of over 300 vehicles, including an array of Porsches, Lamborghinis, and even tractors. He has raced in the GT3 series across Europe and competed in the grueling Dakar Rally. Ak also loves F1, so he owns the Intercity Istanbul Park racetrack in Turkey, which plays host to the Turkish Formula 1 Grand Prix. When Victorious debuted at the Monaco boat show in 2021, Ak parked a new Bentley Continental GT on the helipad. 

The Yacht Can Travel 24,000 Miles on a Single Tank

Victorious is powered by a pair of industrial-grade Caterpillar 3512B 12-cylinder turbocharged diesels packing 1,475 hp apiece. These can push the superyacht to a top speed of 17 knots, though it’s designed more for comfort than speed. At a 13-knot cruising pace, the yacht has a range of 14,000 nautical miles. But throttle back to an ocean-crossing seven knots and it will cover a staggering 24,000 nautical miles with 70,000-gallon fuel tanks. So filling up at $4-a-gallon would cost $280,000.

Space for a Very Large Family

For its role as a globe-trotting family yacht, Victorious has space to spare. The 12 cabins create space for 24 guests, with the owner enjoying the vast, full-beam master suite on the bridge deck facing aft or the equally spacious VIP suite on the main deck. For fun at sea, the boat has a 10-seat, tiered, sound-proofed cinema, a playroom for the kids, an observation lounge with full-size grand piano, and a formal dining room for 14.

All the Toys

The biggest “toy” on board is a 42-foot custom-built, all-aluminum limousine catamaran, designed by Britain’s H2 Design, with a special drop-down section on the bow for beach landings. It’s powered by twin 480 hp Cummins diesels and sits on the superyacht’s huge back deck and is launched by a 6.7-ton-capacity crane. For fishing adventures, a 38-foot Fountain center console with twin 300-horse outboards does the trick, and when the kids want to go water skiing, the crew will fire up the rugged 25-foot Nordkapp Airborne 8 RIB. Add to these three Sea-Doo GTX 230 jet bikes, four Seabob F5s, two electric Fliteboard foilers, and a pair of Radinn electric jetsurfs.

Going off the Grid

Come the Apocalypse, Victorious can go off the grid and be totally self-sufficient for up to six months. With full water tanks, it carries 33,655 gallons of water, supplemented by watermakers that can churn out 13,000 gallons a day. For internal power, there are no fewer than five generators, including two 465kW Caterpillar C18-powered units, and to keep the food frosty, there are 18 fridges, freezers, and ice makers. For the Dom Pérignon, there are two EuroCave 200-bottle chillers. Add to these seven Miele washing machines, six dryers, and five dishwashers. And if anyone gets sick, there’s an onboard hospital. 

A Day at the Beach

No need to head to the real beach when Victorious ‘ lower-deck beach club spans 2,153 square feet. It features an indoor pool open to the stern deck that can be filled with either fresh or salt water, with a counter-current for exercising. Steps away is the yacht’s wellness center with a massage room, a beauty salon, a spa and a hamman steam room. The fitness room comes with the latest Technogym equipment. For perfecting your best Greg Louganis dives, there are oversized fold-down terraces at sea level on both port and starboard. 

Top Deck Gentleman’s Club

Step into the somewhat risque-sounding Gentleman’s Club on the top deck, and one of the highlights is a stunning, wood-burning marble fireplace, fed by more than two tons of logs the yacht carries onboard. Installing traditional fireplaces on a yacht is a challenge at best, so a separate air conditioning and air-filtration system was installed, along with smoke-resistant upholstery. There is also a cigar bar with an aft terrace to enjoy that stogie under the stars, plus a wine cellar and humidor. Perhaps the pièces de résistance are the massive, ’30s concert-hall-style, floor-to-ceiling speakers on either side of the fireplace, for blasting out tunes.

It Rescued Capsized Sailors in the Caribbean

Back in December 2022, the explorer was on a transatlantic crossing from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean island of Saint Martin when it intercepted a distress signal from the five-man crew of a capsized 50-foot catamaran. Petar Milkov, Victorious ‘s captain, responded by changing course and starting a search pattern. After 15 hours of crisscrossing, and at 11.30 p.m., his crew spotted a speck of light on the horizon. The sailors, most badly injured in their inflatable raft, were able to fire off a distress flare, allowing Victorious to pinpoint their position. Early in the morning, the sailors were pulled aboard and the yacht rushed to Saint Martin for medical assistance.

EVERYTHING WAS CONSIDERED FOR YOU

With an exceptional list of features. On the lower deck there is a 200 square meter beach club and wellness center with a large pool, two lounge and bar areas, sea terraces to port and starboard, private gym, massage and treatment room, hammam and beauty salon. There are also double and twin cabins on the lower deck for guests, children or staff. From the lower deck there is step-free access to an elevator serving the bridge deck.

There are five more guest suites on the main deck, including a children's playroom, a tiered movie theater and a full-beam VIP suite with a private lounge. Aft of the main deck is a huge area dedicated to the stowage of three of the yacht's four tenders. These include a 12.5 m (41 ft) custom-built aluminum catamaran limousine/beach-lander, an 11.6 m sport fishing Fountain 38 and a RIB, as well as a covered stowage area for the collection of water toys. Once the boats are launched, this area has the potential for a range of guest activities.

ANOTHER WORLD ON EVERY FLOOR

On the bridge deck, the owner's suite faces aft, with en-suite bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and access to the Jacuzzi and sunbathing areas on the aft terrace. The side decks lead towards the seating forward of the bridge. There are also two children's cabins on the upper deck, which can also be used as staff cabins. The 12 cabins can accommodate up to 24 guests.

The upper deck is all about entertaining. The aft deck features a sit-down bar, an outdoor dining area for 16 people and banquette seating, as well as a Jacuzzi and sun loungers. Walking side decks lead to the touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck, which can also be used as an entertainment area or sun lounge. Inside the sky lounge there are lounge seating and a seating bar, an observation lounge with wrap-around views and a baby grand piano up front, as well as a formal dining room and a second, more intimate lounge.

There are two lounge areas with their own working fireplace on the sun deck for after dinner and also a wine cellar, humidor and an outdoor terrace aft to enjoy your cigar.

Twin 1,475hp Caterpillar diesel engines give her a top speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 13 knots and an expedition yacht range of 14,000nm. It also features zero speed stabilizers to ensure comfort on arrival.

This is what a day on board a €125million superyacht is like

The prime position of the 85-metre explorer yacht Victorious at the recent 2021 Monaco Yacht Show meant that those who didn’t already know the rip-rolling story behind her build soon did. The construction process flitted between multiple owners and designers for over 14 years until finally, victory was had.

As many saw in Monaco, the rescue mission orchestrated by Victorious ’ owner and founder of Turkish yacht builder AKYACHT truly paid off, and what was achieved by H2 Yacht Design, the yard and Michael Leach Design can only be described as a super-stylish home at sea in the form of a more-than-capable superyacht.

With many intrigued by what day-to-day life could be like on the mighty Victorious , here are just a few of the delightful design details and key areas that a future owner, charterer and their guests can expect to indulge in during an unforgettable 24-hours on board.

Supreme hang out spots

In the part of the yacht where most would expect to see a sundeck, H2 Yacht Design formed a swanky club-style lounge. It’s an area in which guests can unwind at the end of each day, and make the most of the cigar humidor, glass-fronted wine cellar, angular marble fireplace and curved cream-coloured sofas for evening soirees. For taking some time out to thoroughly enjoy a cigar under the night sky, guests can move to the adjoining aft open-air terrace.

Nearby in the sky lounge, guests can gather upon the seating area for a more intimate occasion, or chill out, drink in hand by the sit-up bar. Styled as an “Ibiza lounge”, the beach-house vibe of the upper main saloon is enhanced by nautical-inspired rope set into the bar and bursts of marine blue across the furnishings. From either space, the wraparound views grant the all-important vistas, and the baby grand piano can be played to perfect the ambience.

If the occasion suits, the helicopter (an AC145 or equivalent) can be boarded from the touch-and-go foredeck helipad reachable from the sky lounge via the walkaround side decks. As this space was built to be multi-purpose, it can also serve as an entertainment platform or a daytime sunbathing spot.

Another firm favourite feature of Victorious is her main-deck cinema room. With deep, plush velvet sofas, a tiered layout and a dark grey interior, this cosy spot is where guests can switch off and be engrossed in one of the latest blockbusters.

Child-friendly design

As the first owner of Victorious is a family man who has owned a handful of family boats in the Mediterranean, the interior required a child-proof design that didn't fall short of the level of refinement expected of a luxury charter offering. In terms of facilities for the younger ones, the main deck has a children's playroom and the two upper-deck children's cabins can also serve as staff cabins. All of this is evidence of the designer’s efforts to make a yacht that is both functional, beautiful and can stand the test of time.

Guests will find the practical interior remains entirely elegant to form a welcoming villa-esque style with warm natural woods, teak and white oak, and occasional deeper Macassar. Rippled glass, onyx, silver travertine and Calacatta marble add subtle glimmers here and there to promote a relaxed vibe.

Extra additions

The original design lacked a dedicated lower-deck dive store or storage cupboard, which for most, is an essential feature for any big explorer yacht intended to go the distance. As a result, the designers created a well-thought-out area with a storage room for wetsuits and cold weather gear. Once the adventurous guests are good-to-go, two of the yacht’s three tenders – a 12.5m custom limousine catamaran tender (designed by H2 Design) and an 11.5m Fountain 38 tender – can be launched from the main deck aft stowage space. With the tenders off the deck and either moored alongside the yacht or off on an escapade, the main deck aft is a fresh open space that can host anything from a sundown disco, lunchtime buffet to a games or sports event.

The crew are, naturally, more than qualified to be handling the yacht and all her specialities – especially the full-to-the-brim toy store. Here, guests can get to grips with any kind of on-water board, dive deep with the SeaBobs and scuba gear, be ambitious and try their luck fishing, or just have some carefree fun on some of the many inflatables. While these special moments are happening, the one member of the crew who is also a drone pilot can capture it all on camera for guests to keep as a happy keepsake.

Extra-large beach club

One of the first phases of Victorious ’ construction oversaw a 6-metre extension of the stern to accommodate an indoor pool in the beach club, along with the addition of a two-metre bowsprit bringing the total length to 85 metres. Since then, the 200-square-metre stylish beach club was further equipped with a wellness centre with the pool decorated with sky-blue mosaic tiles, two lounges and bars, three folding sea terraces, a dedicated gym, a massage and treatment room, a hammam and a beauty salon. For any treatment or spa service, guests can rely on the two crew members who are fully qualified as an expert masseuse and spa therapist and fitness instructor. From here, there is step-free access to an elevator serving all five decks up to the bridge deck.

Circumnavigation capability

Able to reach a top speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 13 knots and an explorer yacht range of 14,000nm, Victorious has got the guts to make it across the globe. • The superyachting world is a very small one, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
• That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
• These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts.

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land-dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crewmembers should stay tightlipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-per-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke to requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes.

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So, expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs.

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to potential clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. Though, as we mentioned above, this tip probably only applies when they're on land.

Book your massage early.

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he's implemented a booking system to ensure people aren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses will be so busy they won't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms.

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are still very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aiden, pirates are a cause of concern. In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion.

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything.

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are completely custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are still things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborgini. The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crewmembers say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht.

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly. Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So, the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does. And who invites you along, of course.
