Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club History and Founding

The Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club was founded in 1977 and is located on a barrier island in St. Petersburg, Florida. The club has an 18-hole golf course designed by Mark Mahannah, Sr., and his team of golf architects. The course is simply coined “Isla del Sol” by islanders and members of the community.

The original architects of the golf course were Chip Powell, Mark Mahannah, Sr ., Charles Mahannah, Jr., and Robert Walker. Mark Mahannah, Sr., was a well-respected golf course architect who designed over 100 courses in his career. He was known for his creative use of water hazards and his ability to create courses that were both challenging and enjoyable to play.

The Isla Del Sol golf course is a par 72 course that plays to 6,307 yards from the back tees. The course has a slope of 130 and a USGA rating of 69.1. The fairways are wide and the greens are large and undulating. The course is also known for its many water hazards, which come into play on over half of the holes.

The Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club is a private club with over 500 members. The club offers a variety of amenities, including a golf course, tennis courts, a marina, and a clubhouse. The club is also home to a number of social and dining facilities.

In 2018, the club underwent a major renovation of its golf course. The renovation was led by golf course architect Richard Mandell, who worked with the club to update the course’s bunkers, greens, and tee boxes. The renovation also included the addition of new water features and the widening of some of the fairways.

The Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club is a popular destination for golfers of all levels. The course is challenging but fair, and the views of Boca Ciega Bay are stunning. The club is also a great place to relax and enjoy the Florida lifestyle.

Famous Golf Tournament held at Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club

There is no famous golf tournament held at the Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club. The club does host a number of golf tournaments throughout the year, but none of them are considered to be major or prestigious events.

Some of the tournaments that the club hosts include:

  • The Isla Del Sol Member-Guest Tournament
  • The Isla Del Sol Women’s Golf Association Tournament
  • The Isla Del Sol Junior Golf Tournament

These tournaments are open to members of the club and their guests. They are all 18-hole scramble tournaments, and they typically have a shotgun start. The winners of each tournament receive prizes, such as trophies, gift certificates, and golf merchandise.

Arrival Information Details

Advanced reservations are strongly recommended at Simpson Bay Marina. Berthing is not guaranteed without a confirmed reservation. We ask that you provide advanced notice, when feasible, of your approximate arrival time so we can be fully prepared for your arrival and minimize any inconvenience to you.

After passage through Simpson Bay Bridge, you will be escorted to your slip by an IGY Marinas tender. Dock attendants will guide you in and assist you with docking. Once comfortably settled, we ask that you visit our marina office to check-in. The staff will quickly register you and answer any questions.

Please Note:  Captains and his/her assignee must check-in/check-out with the marina office for each stay unless otherwise arranged with marina management.

Early Check-In / Late Check-Out

If a slip is occupied after 10:30am on the day of your scheduled departure, an additional night’s dockage will be charged to your account.

We will do our absolute best to accommodate your requests whenever possible. In most cases, if your slip is available prior to 4:30 pm on the day of your arrival, or after 10:30 am on the day of your departure, we will allow you to remain in the slip at no additional charge. Prior arrangements must be made with the marina office for early arrival or delayed departure in order to avoid unnecessary charges.

Temporary Slips

In the event an early check-in and/or late check-out is unable to be accommodated in your current slip, we will try to accommodate by making another slip available until such time your slip is available or you are ready to depart the marina.

In the event a temporary slip is made available to you, and you do not relocate the vessel, the marina reserves the right to charge you two times (2x’s) the original daily rate for each night you occupy the temporary slip.

This is necessary as the Simpson Bay Marina has limited availability and at times operates at full occupancy. Failure to relocate the vessel could negatively affect other guests.

CANCELLATION POLICY

All non-peak season reservations require a 72-hour cancellation notice.

*Peak Dates & Restrictions: Peak dates December 1st thru April 30th are not eligible for a refund.

Please note:  Cancellation policies are subject to change. Please refer to your reservation confirmation or contact the marina office direct for confirmation of cancellation policy. Simpson Bay Marina teamed up with The Yacht Club at Isle de Sol and held a charity fair to raise money and awareness for the following charities:

  • St. Maarten Nature Foundation
  • St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation
  • Kidz at Sea
  • Carib Swim Team
  • I Can Foundation

Each charity held events at each of their booths and around the marina to help raise money for their charities.  There was a reef clean-up, mangrove clean-up, sail boating demonstrations, swim lessons, tournaments, and lots of items for sale throughout the day.

Charities like the  Nature Foundation St. Maarten  work towards educating the youth on conservation issues and promoting environmental awareness in the community to stop environmental pollution, protect the environment and reduce single-use plastics.  Also, they help to protect and enhance wildlife and marine life species on St. Maarten.  To donate directly to the Nature Foundation St. Maarten click  here .

Our number one goal is to work together inspiring others through the act of giving back our time, support efforts, accessible resources, goods and services.  Please contact us  for further information.

Simpson Bay Marina Rules

To make your stay with us more enjoyable, the following set of guidelines should be followed. These are merely suggested rules of etiquette and regulations to make the Marina and its facilities more enjoyable for all customers.

  • Do not leave garbage on the docks to be picked up.  Garbage should be bagged and tied and then properly placed in designated receptacles, or be placed in the garbage truck, not loosely scattered or abandoned.
  • Oils and fuels should be disposed of properly and not in Marina trash can.  Please ask for assistance when disposing of oils, fuels, or chemicals, your concern for the environment helps.
  • Try not to introduce any effluents into the Marina lagoon.  Use holding tanks if possible.
  • Do not attempt to turn on your own water and electricity.  Please have a dock attendant do it so you can be properly metered in and out.  Using pliers or screwdrivers will damage the equipment and you will be charged.  It is suggested that you read meters along with our dock attendant to ensure accuracy in your metered charges for utilities.
  • Anyone caught taking water from another yacht’s tap shall be responsible for the entire water cost of the metered yacht.  Please use your own water.
  • Keep power cords and water hoses in a neat and orderly fashion so that no one will trip in the dark or while carrying objects.
  • Please wash sails on lawn areas where water outlets and drying spaces are available, or do it aboard your yacht.
  • When marking anchor chains with paint, use paper or cardboard beneath your chain to keep wet paint off the docks and other customers’ shoes.
  • When cleaning dinghies, make sure you rinse debris and growth off of the docks when finished.
  • Lock your boat when leaving it unattended.
  • Lock your dinghies and outboard at night, especially Friday nights.
  • Try to keep excessive noise down after 10 pm as some people do need their rest.
  • Boat repairs being performed at the docks should probably not include grinding and/or power sanding.
  • Barbecue and cooking on the docks is prohibited.  Barbecue and cooking should be done on board in suitable equipment and self contained.  Any other way is dangerous and frowned upon.  Kindly clean up after yourself when finished.  Charcoal ash and debris are not to be disposed of into the lagoon.
  • When docking, keep bowsprits and davits over water’s edge and not protruding across the docks.
  • If bright deck lights or spot lights are to be used at night, avoid pointing them at nearby boats, especially down or into their cabins.
  • Try to control your pets.  Some people do get upset by animals, especially when nature calls on their boat.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Yacht Club Isle de Sol Launches Anchor Bar Ahead of Caribbean Season

yacht club at isle de sol

Over the years, St. Maarten’s reputation as the perfect spot to start or end a Caribbean yacht charter has grown exponentially.

The island’s half French, half Dutch status affords it enviable and wide-ranging accessibility while its geographical Northeastern location in the calm, natural lagoon of Simpson Bay - virtually equidistant between Antigua and St. Thomas - makes it an obvious choice for owners and guests wishing to make the most of the BVIs, USVIs and St. Barts.

With IGY’s recent launch of Isle de Sol’s newly upgraded F&B offering Anchor Bar, the glamorously updated Sky Lounge and upcoming events offer even more great reasons to visit the island’s premium superyacht marina .

Anchor Bar: the ultimate crew clubhouse in St. Maarten

Unveiled in mid-November, this popular outpost has undergone an exciting and modern refurbishment to elevate it to one of the most well-equipped and enjoyable crew-oriented marina facilities in the entire region.

Centred around a beautiful pool, Anchor Bar’s high end yet comfortable and down to earth ambience aims to provide a home away from home, social clubhouse feel for off duty crew to kick back and relax with their peers.

“We’re happy to look after everyone, but first and foremost, this is a crew-oriented space with video games, a pool table and foosball table where we can get crew off the boat, make them happy and encourage them to meet up and explore what St. Maarten has to offer,” explains Brian Deher, IGY’s VP of Operations for the Caribbean and Latin America.

“It’s their club – the video games, pool, gym, tennis, basketball and pickle ball courts are all free for them to use as a benefit of being a marina guest. A happy crew makes for a happy charter after all, and they have the chance to work hard, play hard right here at IGY!”

Upscale food and cocktails for crew downtime

Anchor Bar is overseen by a former Culinary Institute of America manager who understands that yachties are excited to experience familiar comfort foods such as great burgers and freshly made pizzas after spending time on the yacht catering to owner’s and guest’s culinary desires.

“The biggest challenge for the highly experienced chefs and kitchen staff is creating dishes that give the feeling of home without their traditionally upscale presentations - we have to keep reminding them to keep it simple, because they are tempted to go artistic!” adds Brian with a smile. “Anchor Bar chefs make their own bread, pizza dough and focaccia. While the emphasis is on more casual dining, everything is very authentic and I think people will love it.”

Isle de Sol Anchor Bar 3

Casual it may be - with bookings not necessary – but there’s no compromise when it comes to quality. Typical dishes include passion fruit tuna tataki, truffled parmesan, cheddar bacon or chili garlic home fries, hummus with roasted bell pepper and caramelised onions, tomato bruschetta and Bourbon BBQ chicken wings as well as a delicious selection of salads.

“We are focused on the crew, making sure they have a good experience, but we want to provide good food as well,” adds Andy Caballero, IGY’s Regional Manager for the Caribbean and Central America.

“Our chefs and managers have pushed the level of food service as high as possible – they create outstanding chicken wings, amazing double smash burgers and incredible pizzas, so the crew feel comfortable and don’t have to leave as everything is here. After long trips and excursions, they can take a break and just relax, eat, have a couple of drinks and dance.”

A signature cocktail list features fun concoctions such as a Basil and Cucumber Smash with gin, Picante Jalisco and Amaretto 4ever, as well as classic cocktails, beers and wines and Brian adds: “One of our bartenders makes the best espresso martini that quite a few guests have ever tasted!”

The perfect venue for private events at Isle de Sol’s Sky Lounge

Isle de Sol’s impressive third floor Sky Lounge, which boasts spectacular views across the whole lagoon, is being primed as the ideal entertaining space for launches, corporate hospitality, and intimate parties.

‘Whether you want a corporate event promoting your brand, you’re targeting yachting as a service provider or even just thanking your customers, we want this to be the place you think of to do that,” says Brian. “It’s a new offering in terms of hosting special events to promote brands and it’s also available for IGY Trident members to come in at any time and host parties for their crew or guests as part of their VIP experience.”

The venue’s large kitchen will also cater for big events and service Simpson Bay Marina’s new upland build, which includes an events space, pool and gym, so that guests staying there can also enjoy a full resort-style experience.

While Anchor Bar is aimed primarily at crew, IGY hopes it will also become a hit with the local St. Maarten community. “We’d love to keep it open through the summer months and year round,” adds Brian, “and we’re aiming to do that through offering an events program and summer camps using our sports facilities to attract locals.”

Crew Year’s Eve Event at Isle de Sol

At the height of the season while the crew are gearing up for their most highly anticipated charters over Christmas and New Year, the Isle de Sol team is preparing an alternative Crew Year’s Eve, one week after the real thing.

“People are so happy to see each other because it’s the time of year when they have just completed their most important charters of the season, so early January is their time to have fun, relax and ‘be the guest’ for a change, so that’s when we shift gears and put on more activities for them.

“On January 6 th , we are holding the Crew Year’s Eve Event with a firework display that you’d usually expect to see on New Year’s Eve, so that crew who were working and serving over the holiday can experience the countdown.

“For us, it’s a whole other holiday event which neighbouring businesses and restaurants can also enjoy, so it’s good for the island and the marina. We hope a few people on other islands come back in time for the Saturday night fireworks and celebrations. We’ve been hosting this event for years but we recently started working more closely with the community and we’re hoping to grow this event and others in the future.”

Regattas, festivals, and community spirit

Further highlights of the St. Maarten social calendar include the Caribbean Multihull Challenge at the beginning of February, the Heineken Regatta at the beginning of March, Carnival in April and May and the SXM Electronic Dance Festival, which is hugely popular with owners’ families, who often fly in specially to attend.

“At the end of the season, we have the SXM Lagoon Festival - a series of events which take place at each of the largest marinas on the island - with opportunities for learning new skills, mentorship, attending sailing schools, seminars and taking courses,” adds Brian. “The marinas do a great job of collaborating together to create this fun showcase, which attracts boats here from surrounding islands.”

Isle de Sol Anchor Bar 6

Where better to start or end a Caribbean yacht charter?

St. Maarten is unique not only in being ideally situated for easy access to other islands but in offering the best of all worlds thanks to its dual French-Dutch heritage. “The French side is part of the EU and technically a French department, so all the regulations for companies and individuals working in Europe can be done on the French side, just as if you’re in France,” explains Brian.

“And while the Dutch side is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it is not part of the EU so it provides different opportunities. It’s a little more Americanised, and The Friendship Treaty dating back to World War II means a US citizen can get residency and a job permit to work on St. Maarten just as easily as a Dutch national can.”

Consistently voted one of the best marinas in the world to start and end a yacht charter, Isle de Sol’s location on a private island in the middle of the lagoon, with just one access point, makes it a super secure little enclave adjacent to the busiest part of St. Maarten, the Simpson Bay strip. It has played a key role in building St. Maarten’s reputation as an idyllic, ideally located, can-do Caribbean playground.

“Both St. Maarten and Isle de Sol are best in class brands,” says Brian. “While IGY’s marina offers a Four Seasons type of service, St. Maarten has become recognised as the place to find high service levels, great provisioning and accessibility. Quite simply, it’s the place to go.”

Yacht Club Isle De Sol 2001 to 2004

CMMC N.V. prepared all design work and layouts, managed all facets of construction and later managed the Isle de Sol facility from day one. The Yacht Club at Isle de Sol in St. Maarten, is still today one of the world’s leading mega yacht facilities. The facility is currently owned by Island Global Yachting and is one of if not their premier facility. From first inception, Isle de Sol was planned, designed and constructed in just under 8 months and reached 100% occupancy in just under 11 months. This was completed on budget and 12 days prior to its scheduled completion. Construction values on the project were in excess of 15 million US. In 2003 CMMC N.V. also arranged and negotiated a lease for the Port De Plasiance Yacht Club which CMMC had built and earlier operated, thus re- assuming management of this facility. www.igy-isledesol.com
