Land Yachting – Sailing for Those who prefer land

September 30, 2019 Rob Sayers Experience Days , Extreme Outdoor Activities , Fun Outdoor Activities , Land Activities , Outdoor Sports , Physical Challenges 0

land yachting ireland

Blasting down the beach with your backside inches above the ground makes land yachting one of the most exhilarating sports I have tried. Powered purely by the wind in my sails, I joined a posse of stockbrokers who were intent on fulfilling their need for speed.

I tried land yachting as an outdoor activity gift from my wife through Red Letter Days . Activity gifts are one of the best ways to guarantee successful gift giving, at least for me.

What is Land Yachting?

The land yacht had three wheels for stability. In case you didn’t realise, it can be quite a challenge to get a four wheeled vehicle to have all four wheels evenly on the ground unless you put in some decent suspension. Land yachts don’t have suspension, and so you feel all of the bumps and bounces. Traction is provided through wind blowing in a large triangular sail attached to a mast mounted at the front of the land yacht. You sit in a very reclined position and hold onto a rope that pulls the sail in or releases it.

Do I need to be able to Sail to Control a Land Yacht?

Sailing a land yacht is far simpler than sailing a boat. There is no risk of waves, capsizing or falling overboard. Also, because you are lying down in the land yacht, there is no risk of being hit by the sail boom when you tack across the wind.

Your instructor will tell you the circuit for the day in relation to the wind and the technique for getting around corners to keep the wind. All you have to do is pull the sail rope and steer to avoid any of the other land yachts, dogs, people on the beach.

How to Control a Land Yacht

You steer a land yacht with two pedals, left and right. Some land yachts have hand levers for steering, but that only leaves one hand free for pulling the sail rope.

If you are facing the right way, all you need to do to get the land yacht moving is to pull the sail rope tight and keep it held tight. You musn’t loop the rope around your hands though, because if the rope pulls too much you could get rope burns or cuts. Land yacht racers usually wear gloves to protect their hands.

The tighter you pull the sail rope, the faster the land yacht will go, as long as you are not heading directly into the wind. As with any sailing sport, you have to work out which direction the wind is blowing to get the most speed. If you get it right, you find yourself hurtling down the beach with a rather huge grins on your face. Tight turns can lead to flying along on only two wheels, which is a bit hairy but awesome fun.

The Thrill of Land Yachting at High Speed

My Land Yachting Gift Experience

Whenever I get a gift experience I always open it with a sense of trepidation, wondering what experience I will be getting myself into. The Tiger Moth flight was a bit scary, mostly because people kept telling me that they had had dreams of me crashing and also because you didn’t get parachutes.

I was very excited when I opened the Red Letter Days envelope with a gift voucher for land yachting. It was something I had wanted to try for quite a while. I booked the two hour session on a beach near Rye in Kent and eagerly awaited that windy day.

It was easy to find, not least becuase of the big van plastered with signs for the land yachting company. The guys running the day were busy setting up the land yachts, which were left lying on their sides so that the wind didn’t blow them down the beach before time. There were quite a few rather nice cars parked at the side of the road, and talking to the other peope waiting most of them were stockbrokers. Land yachting must be one of those sports that attract people who have a need for that adrenalin rush. Engineering doesn’t necessarily give you such a buzz, but using some of the things you design certainly does.

We were given a brief training session on safety and how to control the land yacht. Then it was pretty much in you get and of you go. At first, it was a bit tricky getting around the first corner because you had to cross the head wind. If you didn’t turn quickly enough, you slowed down and stopped facing the wind. No amount of tugging on that sail rope would get you moving. the instructors stood on that corner to help get you moving again. After a few laps, I got the hang of it. At this point the instructors called me over to the centre to stop. I wondered what was up, and then they increased the height of the mast, which in turn unfurled more sail. This meant more speed! Awesome!

I was back out into the circuit and amazed by the increase of speed from increasing the sail size. One by one, the other bankers were pulled over to have a mast extension. Things then became quite competitive. Overtaking and racing ensued. I got such a thrill from overtaking others and a great sense of satisfaction if one of them lost the wind on a corner.

All in all, the two hours whizzed by and I was left wanting more.

How can I get to try Land Yachting?

You do need a licence to sail a land yacht on a public beach in the UK. The best way is to find a land yacht racing club.

If you want to buy your own land yacht, Blokarts are the most popular brand. The Potty is a UK land yacht design that will fit into the boot of your car.

If you want to try land yachting, you can buy land yachting gift vouchers from Red Letter Days. .

Kite Surfing & Sandyachting

  • « Activities

Whether sand yachting, kite buggying, land yachting or land sailing, this thrilling sport is perfectly suited to Ireland’s winds and wide sandy beaches. It’s still a minority activity but its history in Ireland spans fifty years and it’s growing in popularity.

While Ireland’s Atlantic west coast has traditionally been more associated with sand yachting, the 11-kilometre stretch of Benone Strand, east of Lough Foyle, is fast establishing itself as a centre for kite sport.

At low tide and in a northerly wind, the beach is ideal for sand yachting, and the Irish Power Kite Sandyacht Association (IPKSA) holds several training and race events there during the year. Training is provided free to brand new members and newcomers who don’t have their own equipment can, by arrangement, have use of mini-yachts for event weekends.

Benone Beach which faces north-northeast is also becoming popular with kite surfers. The kitesurfing ‘season’ usually begins in March and ends in November although kiters may be seen at other times, being whipped across the waves, if the wind blows the right way. Kiting is not allowed between RNLI flagged swim zones.

In Carlingford, the sandy, sheltered Templetown beach is also popular with kite surfers. It is protected on each side by low-level rock promontories and has Blue Flag status. Both beaches are lifeguarded during the summer, and parking and toilets are available.

Kitesurfing lessons from qualified instructors are essential before attempting this thrilling sport.

Weather wise April, May and June are often spectacular months. This region is heavily weather dependent as there is a lot of ocean off its coasts. The winds blow predominantly from the west making this west coast a lee shore and the weather can change unexpectedly. The coastal currents can also be strong, often developing a nasty chop. Like elsewhere, weather forecasting has improved over the years and the marine forecast issued by the met office is broadcast on the regional coast guard VHF stations. It is then repeated at intervals in its original form throughout the day unless a change is warranted.

Sailing Ireland: southern ports and harbours to cruise to

Miranda Delmar-Morgan

  • Miranda Delmar-Morgan
  • August 31, 2022

Sailing Ireland is ideal for those who have limited time afloat, and the ports, harbours and anchorages in the south offer a varied cruising ground

Newlyn is a good leaving point for Southern Ireland. It is the last place with (a few) marina berths.

One favoured route is to take the ITZ (Inshore Traffic Zone), and a tidal lift, inside the Off Land’s End TSS to just above Cape Cornwall and then start your crossing of the Celtic Sea from the northern tip of the TSS.

Alternatively the Isles of Scilly shorten the distance, New Grimsby Sound is a good jumping-off or arrival point and passages between southern Ireland and the Isles of Scilly: avoid the Traffic Separation Schemes.

Kilmore Quay is delightful. It is a very busy fishing port, with resident seals, and fine for a departure but not so good for an arrival owing to shallow water outside.

A boat moored in a loch with flat water

Barlogue Creek is in a loch with a safe anchorage and handy for Loch Hyne. Credit: Miranda Delmar-Morgan

Dunmore East is a favoured landfall with deep water, a pontoon and is a nice little place.

Waterford is a long way up the river but sheltered and an interesting trip. The pontoons are near the town, facilities modest. Waterford Crystal have tours around their factory.

Crosshaven is the best place from which to visit Cork since there are no facilities on the city pontoon.

However, the trip up the harbour is very scenic with handsome Anglo-Irish houses looking out to sea.

At the city pontoon you can step ashore into the centre of Ireland’s second city.

The Royal Cork Yacht Club, Salve Marina and Crosshaven Boatyard all have some visitors’ berths.

Kinsale is a very popular small town with two good marinas and anchoring and mooring buoys.

Blind Harbour in Glandore Bay has a very pretty anchorage but is open to the south.

Barlogue Creek is in a beautiful small loch which provides a well protected anchorage. You can dinghy in and watch the rapids at Loch Hyne.

Baltimore is within a large bay protected by Sherkin Island. You can anchor on the east side of Sherkin for shelter in westerlies, it is exposed to easterlies.

It is subject to swell but has good holding on sand.

Crookhaven, Schull and Union Hall at Glandore have visitors’ moorings.

If you get the opportunity to go out and do a tour around the Skellig Islands it is well worth it. There is a small quay but landing is discouraged with the exception of a daytripper boat.

There are precipitous steps and beehive huts at the top.

From there you can make for the island of Valentia and the little town of Cahersiveen which has pontoons.

The Shannon estuary has several anchorages and a marina at Kilrush.

View of buildings in Kinsale from a boat

Kinsale has many historic buildings and plenty of pubs for the thirsty tourist. Credit: Miranda Delmar-Morgan

The west coast of Ireland is completely exposed to the full force of the Atlantic.

The deep inlets and peninsulas mean that you have to work your way back out again, so you can end up feeling vulnerable.

It is quite possible to get stuck and be unable to get out.

There are places to hide, but often only at anchor and supplies may be difficult to acquire sometimes, so you need to stock up as and when you can.

The surrounding countryside is verdant, unspoilt and beautiful and the welcome ashore with lively music in the pubs is wonderful.

Land Yachting on the Beach at St Andrews

land yachting ireland

On your marks… Get set and sail! Head to St. Andrews for a two-hour land yachting session. If you’ve never experienced sailing on wheels, then get ready for tons of fun as you whiz up and down the beach only a few inches from the ground. This exhilarating experience is undoubtedly something you don’t want to miss out on while you’re in St. Andrews. The key thing to master is how to stop as there are no brakes. Slow down by turning into the wind or easing the sail.

Where can I go land yachting in Scotland?

‘Blown Away’ offers a range of activities, including land yachting, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and surfing. They also cater to larger hen, stag, or corporate parties who are looking for something different to add to their bucket list. The two-hour session costs £55 per person or £45 for those under 16.

Land Yachting Guide

  • Sailing a land yacht is easier than sailing a boat. There are no waves or risk of capsizing or falling overboard.
  • Remember the sail is your accelerator. If your need to stop or gain control let go of your mainsail.
  • Land yachting is considered a safe sport in comparison to other action sports. Always wear a helmet.

St. Andrews, home to Scotland’s first university founded in 1413, is a great place for a day out and exploring. St. Andrews is most famously known as the “Home of Golf” and even if you don’t play you can watch golfers tee off on the Old Course. With lots of cafes and pubs to meet up in after a fun day at the beach, this is a great place to try this thrilling sport! West Sands Beach was the film location for the opening scene of Hugh Hudson’s, Academy Award-winning film, ‘Chariots of Fire’.

  • Master the basic skills in as little as 15-20 minutes
  • Receive a full demonstration of how to sail and then get out there to practice
  • Pre-booking is required and bookings are subject to change depending on the weather
  • Helmets are provided but please bring gloves and protective goggles
  • Please contact ‘Blown Away’ for special group rates and availability

About Ireland

Why is Ireland a good sailing destination?

Ireland, with its emerald landscapes and azure waters, paints a dreamscape that beckons sailors and maritime enthusiasts alike. Yachting.Rent invites you to discover why this enchanting isle, where legends intertwine with reality, is rapidly climbing the ranks as a sought-after sailing destination.

Firstly, Ireland’s geographical beauty is undeniable. As you sail along the Wild Atlantic Way, you’re greeted by a dramatic tableau of towering cliffs, secluded coves, and pristine beaches. Places like the Cliffs of Moher don’t just offer panoramic views; they transport sailors back in time, evoking tales of ancient mariners and mythical sirens. Further, with its intricate maze of rivers and lakes, Ireland’s inland waters, like the Shannon River, present a contrasting, serene sailing experience, rich with wildlife and pastoral splendor.

Diversity is a hallmark of the Irish coast. From bustling modern marinas in Dublin and Galway to quaint, timeless harbors in towns like Dingle and Kinsale, sailors can oscillate between vibrant maritime festivities and tranquil anchorages. This blend of the old and the new, the lively and the peaceful, ensures that every sailor, regardless of preference, finds a haven in Ireland.

However, it’s not just nature that crowns Ireland as a top sailing destination. The cultural immersion, the warmth of its people, and the rich tapestry of history and folklore add depth to the journey. Imagine docking at a harbor, being greeted by the lilting tunes of traditional Irish music, and indulging in local legends over a pint at a nearby pub. Or perhaps, exploring ancient ruins and castles that dot the coastline, each with its own tale of battles, love, and treachery.

With Yachting.Rent, sailing in Ireland transforms into an odyssey of discovery. We don’t just offer charters; we curate experiences. Whether you’re keen on tracing the paths of Viking invaders, participating in local regattas, or simply surrendering to the spellbinding beauty of the Irish seascape, we facilitate your dream voyage.

In essence, Ireland, with its unique blend of nature, history, and hospitality, stands out as a gem in the world of sailing. And with Yachting.Rent by your side, the Emerald Isle’s maritime treasures are yours to explore, experience, and eternally cherish.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Ireland

The undulating waters around Ireland, a land steeped in myths and bathed in raw natural beauty, offer a tantalizing choice for sailors: the classic elegance of a sailing boat or the spacious luxury of a catamaran? With Yachting.Rent, discover which vessel complements your vision of the perfect Irish maritime adventure.

Sailing Boat: Embracing Ireland’s Rhythmic Charm A sailing boat provides the quintessential way to experience Ireland’s maritime legacy. With its graceful contours and responsive nature, it allows sailors to feel every pulse of the Atlantic and connect deeply with Ireland’s waterways. Drift past landmarks like the Giant’s Causeway or skim the waves of Galway Bay, echoing the adventures of the Celts and the Vikings who once sailed these waters. The compact design of sailing boats provides intimate access to Ireland’s smaller ports and hidden coves, making them ideal for those who seek both history and seclusion.

Catamaran: Reveling in the Broad Horizons of the Emerald Isle For those whose maritime dreams are painted on a larger canvas, the catamaran emerges as the vessel of choice. With its dual hulls offering stability and an expansive deck, a catamaran provides an unparalleled platform from which to bask in Ireland’s coastal panoramas. Whether you’re anchoring in the expansive bays of Kerry or hosting a sunset soirée off the coasts of Donegal, the catamaran ensures comfort and a generous view. Its spacious layout makes it perfect for families or groups, ensuring everyone has a prime spot to enjoy Ireland’s nautical wonders.

Guiding you in this choice is Yachting.Rent, your trusted partner in curating bespoke Irish sailing experiences. We understand that the vessel is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a vessel for memories, stories, and adventures. Our experts are on hand to match you with the perfect ship for your journey, ensuring that your exploration of Ireland’s coastal splendors is as unique as the waves that carve its shores.

In the end, whether aboard a sailing boat or a catamaran, the Irish seascape promises magic and memories. With Yachting.Rent, you’re not just choosing a vessel; you’re charting your own legend on the waters of the Emerald Isle.
