The Largest Superyacht Launches of 2022

By Emily Dawkins

2022 has been a phenomenal year. Welcoming the return to a ‘new normal’ following the turbulent effects of the pandemic, the past year has seen several incredible milestones for the superyacht industry. As the year draws to a close, we take a look back at the largest, and most significant Top 100 vessels that have joined the global superyacht fleet.

Builder:  Lurssen

The largest superyacht launch of 2022 was Lurssen Yachts' 160m BLUE. Hitting the water at the end of February, this magnificent, and highly-anticipated, 160m superyacht took the industry by storm when she was revealed from her shed at Lurssen’s Bremen-based facilities at the beginning of the year.

With little revealed at her launch, later at the time of her delivery in July, the German shipyard revealed that BLUE has been built to be as environmentally friendly as possible; fitted with a brand new, highly efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept.

Equipped with cutting-edge features, it was only fitting for BLUE’s substantial profile to be of equal grandeur; designed inside and out by world-leading yacht designer Terence Disdale Design.

After her launch, BLUE became the fifth-largest superyacht in the world, and the second-largest Lurssen-built superyacht, 20 metres behind its iconic 180m AZZAM.

Another spectacular new superyacht that was launched from Lurssen’s facilities in 2022 is 146m OPERA. Despite being briefly spotted in May 2021, OPERA was hidden from the world until her launch in mid-September, which showcased her numerous decks, twin helipads and stunning white profile.

After her launch in September, it was confirmed that Terence Disdale Design penned both the exterior and interior of OPERA: another incredible 2022-launched superyacht from the drawing boards of the London-based design studio. Featuring similar design qualities to 160m BLUE, OPERA steals the limelight with her elegant profile which combines taut lines with curvaceous accents; a worthy vessel for the number 10 spot in the Top 100 largest yachts in the world.

As the second megayacht launched in 2022 by the recognised German shipyard, there is no doubt that Lurssen has once again proved itself as the industry leader in regard to building some of the largest superyachts in the world.

Builder:   Oceanco

The world’s largest sailing yacht, codenamed Y721, hit the water for the first time this August. Built by leading Dutch shipyard Oceanco, the record-breaking vessel stands at an incredible 127 metres: becoming the largest sailing superyacht in the world, and the largest yacht (by length) to have ever been built in the Netherlands, and by Oceanco.

Details of the 127m Y721 have, as always with yachts of such size, remained tightly under wraps since the news of her sale in 2018. Rumoured to be built for American tech entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, Y721 was first revealed when she was rolled from her shed in Zwijndrecht, the Netherlands in October 2021.

The three-masted schooner’s black steel hull features a dramatic red line, whilst her superstructure is finished in white and warm woods. Y721 is yet another magnificent build from Oceanco, which has once again achieved its mission in creating the most advanced and inspiring motor and sailing yachts in the world. Y721 now sits in the 25th position in the Top 100 as she awaits delivery to her owner.

118m Project 1010

Builder: Feadship

The forth largest vessel to hit the water this year was Feadship’s Project 1010. Leaving her Makkum-based outfitting shed in August, Project 1010 becomes the Dutch shipyard’s largest superyacht build to date, standing at an incredible 118m in length.

After year’s of industry anticipation, there was plenty of excitement surrounding the mammoth superyacht’s final design. With such sheer size, the challenge was accepted by celebrated yacht designer Espen Øino.

Featuring a breathtaking midnight blue hull, bright white superstructure and attractive curved lines along her profile, Project 1010 is a completely unique superyacht from the yard. Images reveal several of her luxurious features: a main deck swimming pool; large, upper deck helipad; and an impressive glass pod skylounge.

As the largest build from Feadship, Project 1010 is now ranked 33rd in the largest superyachts in the world.

109m SEVEN SEAS

Largely recognised by her codename Y720, 109m SEVEN SEAS marks the fifth largest superyacht to be launched this year. Another milestone in 2022 for Dutch shipyard Oceanco, SEVEN SEAS stunned the industry with her unique pale grey hull, and most notably, the significant amount of glass and windows that impressively stretch around her main, upper and bridge deck.

The spectacular exterior and interior designs of SEVEN SEAS were crafted by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, who worked closely with the owner to ensure that the 109m remained completely one-of-a-kind. Alongside her impeccable design, SEVEN SEAS is fitted with technologically advanced environmental systems, that have been engineered specifically and as a result, now exceed the current regulations.

At 109m, the launch of SEVEN SEAS this year has placed her as the 52nd largest superyacht in the world.

Year after year the superyacht industry celebrates the launch of bigger, bolder and better designs. There is no doubt that 2022 has been an extraordinary year for superyacht launches, with shipyards, in many ways, delivering the next generation of Top 100 vessels.

It goes without saying however, that these monumental superyachts would not exist without the hard work of thousands of industry specialists, yachting experts and talented professionals. Superyachts.com would like to applaud the hard work of each and every individual who has been involved in the incredible superyacht builds that we have witnessed launch this year.

We're certainly looking forward to next year.

By Nina Done   1 July 2022

After her inaugural launch in February 2022, followed by successful sea trials in April, the official name of the highly-anticipated 160m (525ft) Lürssen mega yacht has now been unveiled as superyacht BLUE as she gets ready to depart the German yard’s facilities in Bremen and head to the Mediterranean following the handover to her Owners.

The impressive 15,320 GT yacht features exterior and interior styling by the esteemed British studio Terence Disdale Design, while naval architecture comes from Lürssen ’s in-house team. Showcasing the yard’s pedigree sleek exterior contours, she sports a crisp white hull and superstructure with extensive glazing across her four upper decks, giving her a sharp and elegant profile.

Efficiency and the desire to be as environmentally friendly as possible were key drivers for the technology on board.

While few details thus far have been revealed, what we do know is that on-board features include a pair of helicopter landing sites, comprising a large helideck at the bow and a smaller helipad aft, as well as an extensive swim platform providing guests with seamless access to the water. This area also adjoins a beach club.

Motor yacht BLUE  boasts an array of al fresco relaxing and social living spaces across her decks, courtesy of her vast 22m (74ft) beam, as well as a crowd-pleasing Jacuzzi on her sun deck.

Lurssen mega yacht Project Blue

Accommodation is rumoured to be for 48 guests across 24 cabins ensuring a variety of guest party configurations.

The superyacht will be the world’s 4th largest yacht, and 2nd largest in terms of gross tonnage, behind another Lürssen superyacht, DILBAR , which has a volume of 15,917 GT and was delivered back in 2016.

It is not yet known whether M/Y BLUE will become a luxury yacht for charter. If you'd like to charter a yacht of a similar calibre, you can view and compare all Lürssen superyachts for charter . Speak to a yacht charter broker today for more information about making a booking.

A New Host of Mega Yachts

Making the high seas more luxurious, written by kevin koenig, january 14, 2022.

There is perhaps no truer staple of the ultra-elite than the mega yacht. Art, diamonds, planes, perhaps a library at a NESCAC school of your choice— these things  all cost money, but few of them across the board can compete with a proper super yacht for the pure punch of opulence.

Case in point is Tilman Fertitta’s 252-foot  Feadship   Boardwalk , which dominated the docks at the  2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show . The Dutch-built super yacht reportedly cost $150 million, and it’s no surprise why. An  Airbus EC-130  helicopter sat on the aft portion of its top deck, leading gaggles of showgoers to crane their necks skyward.

Imagery courtesy of Francis Vermeer at Feadship

Onboard, a massive beach club had a full gym and a stocked bar that looked as if it belonged in the lobby of a five-star hotel. Art Deco design is the word of the day in the interior where muscular and geometric patterns show up everywhere, from the artwork to the bannisters. A massive swimming pool on the forward portion of the top deck is reportedly Fertitta’s favorite spot to relax. When playtime is over, he also has a fully appointed office adjacent to the master suite. After all, these boats don’t buy themselves.

Besides Boardwalk , three large Italian builds have also caught our particular interest as of late—call them a Roman triumvirate, if you will.

Imagery courtesy of Azimut Yachts of Sculati & Partners

First is the  Azimut  Grande 38 Metri Trideck. The boat’s interior, done by  Achille Salvagni , absolutely pops. Salvagni concentrated on keeping the spaces fluid, informal, and organic—so much so that he eschewed a formal dining table in favor of al fresco options complemented by a casual dining nook in the upper salon. The vessel’s namesake third deck also makes her distinct among her peers. It resides above the swim platform, and could perhaps best be described as an elevated cockpit of sorts. Extra privacy and a deep connection with the marine environment are the intention with this design.

Imagery courtesy of Benetti Yachts of of Sculati & Partners

Azimut’s sister company  Benetti  has also found time to shine, with its new B.NOW 66M Oasis . The mega yacht is notable particularly for its cockpit and beach club setup. The cockpit has massive terraces to either side that greatly expand the entertainment area. It also has an infinity pool on the aft end that peers out over a beach club that acts as the ideal setup for all water-based activities. The exterior design of the two areas is such that the cockpit seems to cascade like a waterfall down to the beach club and the waterline. It’s a striking appeal to the eye that has made the model extremely popular both in the domestic market and abroad.

Imagery courtesy of Sanlorenzo Yachts

Lastly, the  Sanlorenzo  62M named Cloud 9 rounds out our list. With a traditional profile opting for clean, straight lines, as opposed to the swirling and bending lines that have become en vogue as of late, the yacht harkens back to a different time (albeit not so long ago, as super-yacht design trends tend to turn on a dime). The steel-hulled beast has a Jacuzzi plunge pool on its top deck, a swimming pool on the main deck, a movie theatre, and a spa and beach club down close to the water’s surface. It is, in effect, an entertainer’s dream—and worth every cent of her reported 66-million dollar price tag.

The 10 biggest superyachts currently listed for sale

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Want to know how much boat you can buy for your buck? BOAT takes a look at the biggest yachts currently for sale, starting with the iconic 114.5-metre superyacht Pelorus ...

Pelorus | 114.5m

Year: 2003 Builder: Lürssen

Pelorus was commissioned by a Saudi businessman who enjoyed one long, glorious cruise aboard his new superyacht before tycoon Roman Abramovich made him an offer too good to refuse. Easily the largest yacht to be built by Lürssen at the time, her Tim Heywood exterior features a top deck "lido" with two swimming pools, two helicopter pads and a vast, sea-level platform revealed by opening the transom. Interiors were carried out by Terence Disdale , who opted to use natural materials wherever possible to maintain a "casual" atmosphere – in the hopes it would offset the yacht’s imposing frame.

Pelorus is asking €185,000,000 with Burgess .

Moonlight II | 91.4m

Year: 2005 Builder: Neorion

The brainchild of the late Andreas Liveras, Moonchild II was originally commissioned as the 85.3-metre Alysia alongside sistership Annaliesse (now Queen Miri ). Her transformative 2015 refit added the extra 6.1 metres alongside a brand new beach club made complete with a well-stocked bar, sunbathing areas and shell doors that reveal far-flung ocean views. Other highlights include a touch-and-go helipad and a full-beam spa with massage room, beauty salon, steam shower and gym.

Moonlight II is asking €68,000,000 with Fraser .

Phoenix II | 90.1m

Year: 2010 Builder: Lürssen

Phoenix II  takes a page (or two) from The Great Gatsby with her cherry velvet flooring and gilded details. The owner commissioned Winch Design to create her intricate "Art Deco meets the New York skyline" design concept, including a 5.7-metre phoenix figurehead modelled after the Chrysler building's mounted eagles. Roaring highlights include a sommelier room, three swimming pools, a plush cinema room and a custom Steinway for some musical accompaniment at mealtimes.

Phoenix II is asking €124,950,000 with   Cecil Wright and Burgess .

Lady Lara | 91m

Year: 2015 Builder: Lürssen

Debuting on the brokerage market in September 2023, Lady Lara has eluded the public eye for eight years – with BOAT International only recently stepping on board . She was designed inside and out by Reymond Langton and features two standout swimming pools . The first transforms into a dance floor with surround-sound while the second is fitted with a swim-up bar, large day bed and sunlounger. Lady Lara 's recently-completed winter works were valued at a staggering €15,000,000.

Lady Lara is asking €230,000,000 with Y.CO and Merle Wood & Associates .

Year: 2009 Builder: Abeking & Rasmussen

Another Reymond Langton entry, B2 remains the second-largest launch by the German shipyard (beaten out by the 118.2-metre Livao ). Her recent four-million-euro refit saw the hull extended by seven metres – allowing room for a spacious beach club, with a glass-bottom infinity pool acting as its rippling, refracted ceiling. The beach club is also outfitted with lounge chairs, a drinks bar and flatscreen television.

B2 is asking €79,000,000 with Moravia Yachting .

Chakra | 86m

Year: 1963 Builder: Van Der Werf

Delivered first as a commercial vessel, Chakra was converted into a full-fledged superyacht in 1998 by Devonport Yachts . The change saw her five decks rearranged with a dedicated yoga area, spa pool, beauty parlor, massage room and gym. This unconventional yacht also boasts a globe-trotting range (in exces of 10,000 nautical miles) and a spacious tender garage housing Yamaha Wave Runners, two RIBs and a 12-metre Sessa dayboat.

Chakra is listed for sale with Merle Wood & Associates, with POA.

O'Ptasia | 84.7m

Year: 2018 Builder: Golden Yachts

Superseded by 95-metre sistership O'Pari in 2020, Golden Yachts' former flagship is still one of the largest yachts on the market today. Her most attention-pulling feature is the beach club spa, fitted with a steam room, dry Finnish sauna, Hammam and massage room. Continuing the theme of wellness, a touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck can double as a yoga studio (with a view like no other) while her waterfall Jacuzzi is also a rejuvenating spot.

O'Ptasia is asking €89,999,000.00 with Burgess.

Elements | 80m

Year: 2019 Builder: Yachtley

The newest delivery on the list, Elements is Alpha Marine -made and "one of the world’s few purpose-built SOLAS yachts" according to her broker. Worthy of note is the master cabin, complete with its own oval lobby that doubles as a walk-in closet and a private deck with helipad, swimming pool, Jacuzzi and small private dining table. Her opulent Cristiano Gatto interiors see unconventional features (think Grecian-style pillars and etched-mirrored glass) incorporated alongside gold, silver and mother of pearl inlays.

Elements is asking €112,000,000 with Camper & Nicholsons .

Amaryllis | 78.4m

Year: 2011 Builder: Abeking & Rasmussen

Inspired by the Belle Époque, Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, it's no wonder Amaryllis'   interiors (owed to Reymond Langton) always dazzle those who step aboard. Leisure highlights include a piano lounge, cinema suite and five-metre pool with colourful underwater lighting for night-time swims. Her waterside set-up also impresses, with a beach club that features a fully-equipped (and perfectly paired) gym and spa.

Amaryllis is asking €89,000,000 with Moravia Yachting.

Yersin | 76.6m

Year: 2015 Builder: Piriou

Designed by Pierre-Jacques Kubis in the same scientific spirit as her namesake , Yersin is equipped with a barge, seaplane and enough provisions to keep 18 people fed for 50 days. But this military-style explorer is built not just for getting to extraordinary places, but also for making the most of them once there. Guests have free reign over a 30-square-metre spa, cinema and a pool deck complete with a teppanyaki galley, sushi bar and a large swimming pool. Other highlights include a library and an elevator accessing all decks.

Yersin is asking €59,000,000 with Fraser.

Photos show the luxury mega yachts that belong to Russian oligarchs — some of whom have hidden their ships as the UK ramps up sanctions.

  • Sanctions targeting Russian oligarchs threaten their luxury assets — including their mega yachts.
  • Many countries have implemented sanctions targeting Putin and Russian oligarchs following Russia's attack on Ukraine.
  • Insider compiled a photo list of some of the luxury vessels.

Insider Today

Russian billionaires' assets — including their megayachts — are in danger of being seized as countries continue to impose sanctions on Russian oligarchs in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden announced that the US will make a substantial effort to seize Russian oligarchs' assets.

"We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets," Biden said in his State of The Union address on March 1. "We are coming for your ill-begotten gains."

Since the US is not in "armed conflict" with Russia it may be legally tricky to seize assets like yachts, Insider reported .

"The threshold for seizing assets under sanctions is that the US has to be in armed conflict with the owner of the assets," Brian O'Toole, an economic sanctions expert, tweeted last Friday. "The idea of turning Russian corruption into Ukrainian assistance is lovely but this idea is illegal, period."

It can also be difficult to find out who the owners of these yachts are.

Offshore companies typically own the luxury vessels, but enough "public speculation" pointing to a Russian oligarch as an owner is likely "sufficient for a seizure," Insider reported .

Many of the oligarchs moved their yachts to places where they can't be seized, such as the Maldives, which does not have an extradition treaty with the US.

Insider has compiled a list of photos with mega yachts linked to Russian oligarchs.

Galactica Super Nova

mega yacht 2022

Amid sanctions and seizures targeting Russian billionaires, Galactica Super Nova — said to be linked to the CEO of Russian oil firm Lukoil — is no longer detectable via ship tracker site MarineTraffic , The Daily Beast reported Thursday.

The superyacht — whose owner is named Vagit Alekperov — had just been in Montenegro last week, Insider reported .

Alekperov is not currently the target of any sanctions.

The yacht is almost 230 feet long and can hold up to 12 guests and 16 crew members, according to the ship maker Heesen Yachts .

The ship also has a helicopter pad that can turn into an outdoor movie theatre, also according to the ship maker.

The Amore Vero

mega yacht 2022

France seized Amore Vero, a 281-foot megayacht linked to oligarch and politician Igor Sechin, on March 3.

The yacht, Amore Vero, is estimated to have a value of $120 million . It has a swimming pool that doubles as a helicopter pad and a private deck for its owner, according to Oceana , the ship maker.

Per The Wall Street Journal , officials believe that Amore Vero is "owned by a company whose majority shareholder was Mr. Sechin," though the outlet does not provide the name of the company.

Sechin is the CEO of Rosneft, Russia's oil giant, and a former deputy prime minister. A known Putin ally , he was sanctioned by both the EU and the US before France seized his yacht last week .

Sechin was one of seven oligarchs sanctioned by the UK on Thursday.

People in Russia have referred to Sechin as "Darth Vader" and "the scariest man on Earth," according to The Guardian .

mega yacht 2022

Alisher Usmanov has been sanctioned by the EU, the US, the UK, and Switzerland. His boat remains in Germany, but the country says it hasn't seized it.

Usmanov's Dilbar is "is the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage," according to Lürssen , the German ship's maker.

It's 512-foot long and weighs 15,917 tons. The ship has been docked in Germany for months undergoing a "refitting," but last week Forbes reported that it was unable to leave the dock.

Germany, however, has denied that it formally seized Dilbar.

Forbes said that "the German federal customs agency is the 'responsible enforcement authority' and would have to issue an export waiver for the yacht to leave, and that 'no yacht leaves port that is not allowed to do so.'"

Still, multiple outlets reported that Usmanov has fired the crew on the Dilbar.

The Uzbekistan-born oligarch is a supporter of Putin.

"I am proud that I know Putin, and the fact that everybody does not like him is not Putin's problem," Usmanov told Forbes  in a 2010 interview.

mega yacht 2022

Suleyman Kerimov was sanctioned by the US, and his son, Said Kerimov, owns ICE. The superyacht is worth is an estimated $170 million.

The Kerimov family owns the majority of Polyus Gold, Russia's biggest gold producer .

ICE was dubbed "Superyacht of the Year" in 2006 at the World Super Yacht Awards, according to Boat International . It is approximately 300 feet and has its own resident helicopter, according to Club Yacht .

Quantum Blue

mega yacht 2022

Sergey Galitsky's ship, Quantum Blue, has an estimated value of $250 million and is last known to be docked in Monaco.

Galitsky is the founder of one of Russia's largest supermarket chains, Magnit.

His name is not currently on the list of sanctioned Russian oligarchs,

mega yacht 2022

Though he also is not the target of any current sanctions, Vladimir Potanin's superyacht, Nirvana, is one of at least four ships docked in the Maldives .

Potanin is the Former First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and was a longtime trustee for the Guggenheim museum before stepping down on March 2, according to The New York Times .

Nirvana is not Potanin's only superyacht, he also owns another named Barbara, according to Fortune .

Keeping up with the Bezoses: Mark Zuckerberg buys a super yacht, reports say

M ar. 21—Given that Mark Zuckerberg enjoys a respectable 16th place on a list of the world's richest people, he probably figured it was time for him to acquire one of the ultimate status symbols for the mega-wealthy — a super yacht.

A new report from The Sun said that Zuckerberg is now the proud owner of a $300 million vessel that he has christened "Launchpad." The 387-foot-long vessel, which comes with a helipad and a $30 million companion boat, was seen docked this week at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its unique chrome finish reflecting in the sun.

This purchase shows, among other things, that the Facebook and Meta founder and CEO has branched out from buying islands and building an underground complex to help him survive the apocalypse. Perhaps, he wants to cruise the Mediterranean this summer and be among the moguls who can play host to Leonardo DiCaprio.

The yacht definitely grants him admission to the watery playgrounds of such multibillionaires as Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates and any of the Russian oligarchs who haven't been the target of sanctions imposed by the United States or its allies over Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In fact, Zuckerberg reportedly came by Launchpad due to the misfortunes of one of those oligarchs. The yacht originally was commissioned to be built by Vladimir Potanin, one of Russia's richest men who is on multiple sanctions list, according to a report by Autoevolution.com , a transportation industry site. The yacht was known as Project 1010, and the shipbuilder in the Netherlands was legally barred from delivering it to Potanin when it was completed in 2022, though Autoevolution also said that Potanin was not the yacht's actual owner.

It's not known when or how Zuckerberg acquired the yacht. Autoevolution reported that he had been seen at the Feadship shipyard in the Netherlands in December, showing "a clear interest in Project 1010."

The Sun reported that the yacht recently received "special permission" to be imported. It has since arrived in the United States, a couple months ahead of Zuckerberg's 40th birthday on May 14 — which raises the question of whether he meant Launchpad as a birthday gift to himself.

It's quite a gift: Launchpad can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard. It also requires a crew of 48 and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com . But shelling out $30 million for maintenance a year shouldn't be a problem for Zuckerberg, who reportedly earns between $6 million and $12 million a day, The Sun said.

But as spectacular as Launchpad sounds, super yacht fans might say it's not as spectacular as Jeff Bezos's super yacht, Koru. The $500 million sailing vessel features very tall masts, a swimming pool, a helipad and room for a second, smaller yacht. The most noteworthy thing about Koru is that Bezos commissioned a special sculpture to decorate its prow. It's a "curvaceous winged goddess" that is said to bear a striking resemblance to his fiancee Lauren Sanchez.

The Amazon founder, his wife-to-be and the goddess figurehead spent much of last summer sailing around the Mediterranean, cruising from Spain to Croatia and hosting such famous guests as Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Usher. The couple also threw a lavish engagement party off the coast of Positano on Italy's Amalfi coast, attended by another pack of famous friends, including Kris Jenner, Wendi Murdoch and, yes, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Mark Zuckerberg’s $300million ‘birthday present’ mega yacht arrives in US – it even has its own $30m ‘wingman’ boat

FACEBOOK founder Mark Zuckerberg has shown off his wealth at sea, bringing his multimillion-dollar yacht to the United States just weeks before his birthday.

After rumors the billionaire was looking to invest in a yacht began circulating, Zuckerberg was quick to snag a $300 million mega yacht complete with its own $30 million partner boat.

Mark Zuckerberg's $300 million mega yacht arrived in port just weeks before the billionaire's 40th birthday

He was seen in the Netherlands touring Project 1010, a Russian-commissioned mega yacht, in early March.

Due to sanctions involved in importing the vessel to the United States, delivery of Zuckerberg's multimillion-dollar boat was delayed.

It was first spotted in home waters on March 20.

The 387-foot-long vessel docked at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its chrome finish reflecting a harsh sun.

Project 1010 made its maiden voyage from the Netherlands after receiving special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg's birthday, which is on May 14, raising questions about whether it could be a gift to mark the occasion.

The mega vessel is not far off the size of Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos' $500 million 417-foot tall mega yacht, Koru, which was spotted in the same state in November 2023.

The Abeona, his mega yacht's support vessel, a 264-foot garage to hold Bezos' luxury cars, private helicopter, and jet skis, was docked at a slip four miles away.

To put into perspective the additional costs Zuckerberg is looking at, Bezos reportedly bankrolled a $16,500 per week bill for Koru to stay at the port, part of the $25 million in annual costs the ship will rack up.

But cost is no object to 39-year-old Zuckerberg, as he was the youngest billionaire to make the top 10 wealthiest people in the world list.

In 2021, Zuckerberg was reportedly worth $108 billion, an amount that rose to $138.4 billion by January 2024.

Zuckerberg is hardly known for conserving his money when faced with large purchases.

In December 2021, it was reported that Zuckerberg was breaking ground on an estimated $270 million, 57,000-square-foot Doomsday bunker.

Plans for the structure include filling the football field-sized space with 30 bedrooms, elevators, a swimming pool, sauna, tennis court, and full-sized gym.

EARNING $48,328 - MINUTE BY MINUTE

While a $330 million purchase might sound outlandish to most, especially when coupled with a $270 million bunker, Zuckerberg can make that money back in about two months.

The Meta, formerly Facebook, founder reportedly makes between $6 million and $12 million each day, equating to an estimated yearly earning of more than $3 billion.

In 2018, Zuckerberg earned roughly $1.7 million an hour, according to previous Business Insider calculations.

By 2020, he ranked as the fourth richest person on the planet.

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

Metro city Moscow: The megacity that won’t slow down

Russian designer Constantine Konovalov and producer Natalia Moskaleva have laid out their vision for a new Moscow metro map for 2030.

By Nikki Peach

“T he Queen’s Gambit , except it’s me visualising the metro map on my ceiling when I can’t sleep.” That’s Samantha Berkhead of the Moscow Times’ review of what’s set to be the world’s most complex transport map. At first glance, proposals for the 2030 Moscow metro map are enough to keep anyone up at night, with its complex web of coloured lines, shapes and route transfers resembling the strategic imaginings of a grandmaster – memorising a single station would serve you well at a pub quiz.

But like a brilliantly thought-out chess game, the logic of the map is best understood by its designers.

While Moscow is a formidable, even hostile, city by many estimations, it’s also one that has ongoing plans to become the most well-connected megacity in the world. The latest map for the expanding metro network , designed by Constantine Konovalov and produced by Natalia Moskaleva, does just that; it uses innovative and comprehensive design to map out a city that won’t stop expanding, in a way that continues to reflect these changes.

When the wider Moscow region (also, rather glamorously, known as ‘the Moscow megalopolis’) is included, the city’s population exceeds 20 million , making it the largest megacity in Europe and one of the biggest in the world. It is unsurprising, then, that connecting its citizens and visitors within the city itself is high on the agenda.

This might sound like a perplexing strategy during a time of social distancing, QR codes and remote working, especially as Russia faces a third renewed surge of Covid-19. But its capital city, and indeed the part of the country with over 1.5 million cases, is looking to the future.

Mapping out the future

The Moscow metro first opened for passengers in May 1935 , to a much smaller Soviet Moscow, and its image – and purpose – have remained malleable ever since. The current map is no longer fit for purpose as the city’s increasingly complex transit network needs one that reflects its geography. Not only that, but the metro network has become something of a tourist attraction itself, and it needs a comprehensive new system for citizens and tourists to enjoy – even at the risk of being overwhelmed.

Moscow’s metro has a long and rich history, so redesigning its entire appearance is no mean feat.

Often known as a city of rings, looping together roads, railways and Russians alike – as its population grew, so too did the cyclical infrastructure. Home to the Boulevard Ring, The Garden Ring – notorious for its lack of gardens – and the Moscow Automobile Ring Road, among others, the logic of loops, circles and rings maintaining a constant connection between people and place is central to Moscow life.

The first historical circular line appeared in the country’s metro scheme between 1950–1954. However, encircling the centre of the city and only 19.4km long, it left a lot to be desired as the city continued to mutate . While more circular lines appeared, slowly integrating railway lines along the way, the shape of the city – or rather its transport network – has had to unclench its fist to offer its citizens a more sensical and inclusive map that reflects where users physically are within the city.

Round in circles?

The original structure, some 70 years old, is something that designer Constantine Konovalov and producer Natalia Moskaleva are choosing to reform rather than regurgitate, as they present their vision for the map of 2030. Konovalov, who has worked with Moscow metro before, having previously designed the metro logo – another symbol of Muscovite transport that has seen its fair share of redesigns – which is characterised by a red letter M. It is unsurprising, then, that he and Moskaleva have been trusted with crafting the future metro map.

The designers have created a new approach to the graphic grid, one that currently looks like a sibling structure of the London underground network, shunning the classic scheme construction of a 45º angle grid, the post-popular schematic map design in the world and one that was, in fact, first introduced by Harry Beck for London tube lines.

What sounds like a minor change to someone more accustomed to using the subway than designing it, the new 60º axes will provide a more effective and balanced line network that diverges from the centre of the city, mirroring the real geography of the stations. The designers’ two new rings are not round, doing away with traditional Moscow logic, and all of the lines intersect with each other.

The science behind the new design is one of logic, practicality and style – taking into consideration geography, previous map lines, polygon angles and, of course, circles. The designers said : “When looking for a shape we wanted it to meet three requirements: visual equability (no empty or packed spaces), ease in finding your way and a recognisable shape of rings.”

They added, “we made the historical Circle line (5) round, but the new circular lines (11 and K) are hexagonal. This approach takes into account the further evolvement of the metro. Hexagons became the basis for a rare, yet geographically elegant grid with 60º angles.”

When looking for a shape we wanted it to meet three requirements: visual equability (no empty or packed spaces), ease in finding your way and a recognisable shape of rings.

By unravelling the complex intersections of the existing metro map, the designers exposed the bending lines outside of downtown Moscow. The result is, they hope, easier navigation and the juxtaposition of metro and city maps. The design does not just incorporate the routes themselves but has simplified transfers into “capsules” between stations, so users can easily understand when and how to move from hub to hub.

Mega Moscow

Moscow’s urban development is not only vast in scale but also fast in pace. Konovalov explains, “in recent years the pace of construction has increased so much that the number of stations on the scheme will double in the near future”. This is clear to see when the map of 2013, or even of today, is compared with the vision for 2030 – it looks like the network of two entirely different cities. And perhaps that’s the point, Moscow is a city that is only getting larger – in size and in scope.

While the complete vision of Konovalov and Moskaleva’s metro map is still a long way off, major developments to the network are due to be finished as soon as 2022. The underground Great Ring Line will be completed next year and is 70km long, with two new rings depicted by the designers as hexagons.

Russia’s status as an unmissable tourist destination is debatable, but it’s clear that a large ‘open’ sign hangs above the capital for its ever-growing population. There is no doubt that these changes are sure to attract tourists from elsewhere in Russia, as well as the rest of the world.

For Muscovites that manage to understand the map, they are set to have the world’s largest rail network on their doorstep, while Londoners still struggle to cross the Thames in under an hour.

In the contest to be crowned Europe’s greatest megacity, is this checkmate?
