Boat underway

A 1982 Pelle Petterson design, one of two built for the Helsinki Europeans the same year. Helmed by Pelle Petterson, she then won the 1983 World Cup in Newport Beach. Under the name Da Capo, she came in 5th place in the 1996 European Championship in Cannes, France. After that – and a keel change – she became Dietrich Gruenau’s GER104 Courage VII in which Dieter had finished 3rd in the Worlds at Hango in 1999 and 2nd at St. Tropez in 2003. He also finished 2nd in the 2000 Europeans at St. Tropez, and 3rd in both 2002 in Denmark and 2004 in Porto Rotondo. Beat Furrer, a previous ISMA President, then bought her and finished 7th in Flensburg in 2006. He subsequently finished 3rd in the 2010 Europeans at Brunnen, 5th in the Worlds at Helsinki, 5th again in the 2012 Europeans at Nynashamn.

“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

Sailing Vessel Irene

Where will your next adventure take you, welcome to sailing vessel irene, 110 years of maritime heritage, inspiring sailing trips, voyages and holidays on board an historic, traditional vessel.

Join the crew of Irene this year for the voyage of a lifetime on board this historic tall ship.  Enjoy some of the finest sailing locations in the British Isles, with abundant wildlife, stunning scenery and outstanding company.

Throw yourselves into the activities by joining the crew in raising the sails, hauling up the anchor or helming the ship.  Alternatively, sit back and watch the scenery drift serenely past the decks.  This is your holiday, you choose.

With fabulous en-suite cabins and great food cooked fresh on board, our reputation for the finest hospitality is not an idle boast either.  We might be over 110 years old, but some modern facilities are worth embracing!

We run traditional sailing voyages from a single day to a week in the areas around the West Country, the Scilly Isles and the West Coast of Scotland.  These are planned between April and September each year.

Our Voyages

No experience necessary.  let our crew take you on the voyage of a lifetime..

From the Westerns Isles to the Scilly Isles, Irene’s voyages last from a single day to a week or more.  We take in some of the most stunning sailing destinations in the UK.  From beginners to old hands there’s something for all experiences.  Whether you fancy a wild thrash up the Irish Sea or a gentle potter round the Cornish coast.    Sea kayaking, hill walking or whisky tasting – add in some extra experiences to make your voyage truly memorable.

About Irene

What you should expect if you join us..

From Edwardian cargo vessel to family home to play thing of the rich and famous, Irene’s had a fascinating life.  She’s been the darling of the silver screen, burnt and sank in the Caribbean and now earns her keep as a charter vessel.  She’s has all the safety equipment you’d expect and is regularly inspected by the MCA.  She carries a crew of professional mariners who love sharing their passion for this old lady of the seas.  If you’ve sailed tall ships previously, Irene may surprise you with her private ensuite cabins and wonderful hospitality.

Events, Media and Festivals

Alongside our sailing charters, Irene has a history of undertaking corporate events, media work, films and private events.  Whether you’re considering the next marketing event for your company, planning a wedding with a difference or looking for a historic set for film or television, please do get in contact.  Irene has experience in all of these!

Film Location

With credits including Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice Through the Looking Glass, Irene is no stranger to the silver screen!  Looking for a historic sailing vessel to add realism and character to your film?  We are used to working with film and media companies.  At sea or in harbour we can work with your team to ensure you get the perfect shot and our crew will ensure Irene is painted and rigged in a manner to play the part to perfection!

Private Events

Weddings, special birthdays or other celebrations?  Why not charter the whole vessel and make it a party to remember.  We can host parties of up to 60 people and you can be assured that the ship will be dressed appropriately for the occasion.  Get in touch if we can help you celebrate.  As much notice as possible is appreciated as we need to ensure our charter programme will accommodate any event.

Gallery of a recent wedding onboard.

Maritime Festivals

We love to bring Irene to maritime festivals and have been recognised by National Historic Ships with their Flagship of the Year award for our efforts to bring maritime heritage to the public.  We’ve been regular attendees at Brest, Douarnenez, Milford Haven and Bristol Harbour festivals in recent years.  We’re happy to attend as a floating exhibit, to provide corporate entertainment or offer sailing experiences for your visitors.

From Our Guest Book

Guests from last season have been kind enough to share their thoughts on their voyage on Irene.  Some of the highlights are below.  Thanks to everybody who joined us and made it such a memorable year.

Absolutely recommend. My first time sailing and I was a little apprehensive but no reason to be. This a safe and enjoyable introductory experience with just the right amount of encouragement to participate. SO 2019
Just returned from my first ever sailing trip, which happened to be on board the beautiful Irene. I had no idea what to expect – but it was great! The crew made me feel very welcome. Lovely people, lovely company from the other guests, and a real adventure. SS 2019
What a week of amazing experiences – incredible crew (thank you!), sailing and food.  Topped off by seriously good whiskies! Heaven! KA 3rd June 2017

OYSTER ANTIGUA REGATTA 2023

Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua, 5th - 8th April 2023. A special edition of the Antigua Regatta which celebrates 50 years of Oyster Yachts

Regattas • 5-8 April 2023

Oyster antigua regatta, back in oyster’s spiritual home in the caribbean, nelson’s dockyard in english harbour, the 2023 oyster antigua regatta brought the oyster family together for four days of action-packed racing and special celebrations..

We welcomed back the Oyster World Rally 2022-2023 fleet from their 16-month circumnavigation, and all Oyster owners were invited to attend a very special dinner to celebrate 50 years of Oyster Yachts.

The Regatta, now in its 45th edition, saw a combination of course racing and pursuit racing, and took the fleet up the east coast of the island for a night at a secluded anchorage. In true Caribbean style, the social programme did not disappoint, with drinks parties and steel bands, iconic sunsets and the legendary, Regatta finale party.

Dolphin Sails, Lewmar, The Glenturret and Antigua Distillery were the official Regatta partners for 2023 and were at the event supporting owners on the dock and onboard during races with their service teams.

  • All event documents were sent electronically via email and the Oyster app to reduce paper waste
  • No single-use plastics were supplied, and all caterers provided environmentally sound alternatives
  • Participants were given the opportunity to donate to local marine organisations - the Environmental Awareness Group Antigua and  Antigua National Parks  coral restoration and turtle conservation projects

We would like to thank all the participants who made smart choices to help protect the water and ecosystems we love so dearly and support this program.
