Boat of the Week: Inside ‘Galactica,’ the World’s Largest All-Aluminum Superyacht
Heesen's behemoth has a high-tech "backbone" running its length to provide enough rigidity for the boat to reach a blistering 30 knots., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

What has an aluminum-plate backbone, more than one head, and runs faster than Usain Bolt? Heesen ’s superyacht Galactica— or “Project Cosmos,” as it was formerly called by the yard. The largest boat built by the Dutch shipyard to date is getting ready for its spring debutante ball. Fast, sporty and 262 feet long, the owner refers to Galactica as his “ultimate superyacht.”

Hundreds of yachts around the world are larger than Galactica . None of them are built entirely out of aluminum. For the owner who likes to make a statement with his custom new builds, Galactica had to be his largest and fastest one yet. The owner decided he wanted a 30-knot top speed—greased lightning for a yacht this size and a conundrum for the shipyard.
A 262-ft. steel-hulled boat with conventional propulsion wouldn’t be able to reach that 30-knot mark. But an all-aluminum boat might, though that metal doesn’t provide the type of structural support that heavier steel does. Such a yacht had never been built, even by an aluminum specialist like Heesen. It would take serious creative engineering.

The owner has history when it comes to these types of requests. His previous two yachts, Galactica Star and Galactica Super Nova are both all-aluminum with top speeds nearing 30 knots. At 230 feet in length, the latter was Heesen’s largest-ever build when delivered in 2016. Galactica is 30 feet longer, and while that doesn’t sound like much in the scheme of things, the technical ingenuity required to make it work had Heesen’s top engineers scratching their heads. The answer lay outside the boating industry, in the construction industry’s I-beam.
“Everyone knows the I-beam where you have the material on the outer veins of your structure,” Peter van der Zanden, Heesen’s general manager of design, development and engineering, told Robb Report . “That’s where our inspiration for the backbone came from, where we have the majority of materials in the bottom of the boat and on the main deck—our ‘outer veins’.”
The name “backbone” suggests a spine or something with flex, but the patented box-shaped structure is anything but. Composed of 15-mm aluminum plate, it’s lightweight and strong, running almost the full length of the yacht.
Glass was a main priority for the owner’s third boat in the Galactica series. Courtesy Heesen
“We knew the design would work, our only concern was if it would work well enough,” says Van der Zanden.
Heesen created a scale model of the boat in water, divided into four segments, and simulated the pressures and forces at sea. When the results exceeded the requirements set out by Lloyd’s, the yard patented the design.
Of course, there’s more to Galactica than its hidden backbone. Key defining features of the Winch Design exterior include large sweeping panes of glass that trace the arching line of the superstructure. A bow helipad doubles as a cinema with seating and a screen that folds away into the deck. The glass-bottomed pool on the main deck reflects sun rays on the beach club below. Increasing the amount of light—both natural and artificial—throughout the boat was a chief request in this latest version of Galactica.
On its journey from the Oss shipyard to North Sea sea trials, the clearance between the top deck and some bridges was less than six inches. Courtesy Heesen
“The owner’s previous experience has certainly influenced the way Galactica looks,” James Russell, exterior designer at Winch, told Robb Report . “It takes time to learn what you love, and particular focus has been paid to areas where more time will be spent, such as the beach club.”
Inside, an interior by Sinot Yacht Design & Architecture includes a central glass elevator, brushed oak and marble finishes, and in the main deck lounge, hand-cut glass ceilings. Galactica ’s windows incline at 45 degrees, rather than the standard 90 degrees, to give the illusion that the panes of glass are larger than they are.
Glass is a recurring theme, from the glass detailing in the straw marquetry and stainless-steel wall located in the main deck lounge, to the drinks display cabinet on the bridge deck with bespoke-sized backlit glass cubes sized to fit individual bottles. But glass is heavy. For the yacht to be fast, it needs to be light.
The helipad converts into an open-air cinema, with a screen that rises from the deck. Courtesy Heesen
On a yacht of Galactica ’s size, everything is large, from the four MTU V20 engines (12 tons each) and the two gearboxes (13 tons each), to the air-intakes and the fuel tanks. But everything was made as lightweight as possible. The boat totals only 1,700 gross tons. The owner’s 30 knots will come from the MTUs’ 19,320 horsepower as well as the variable-pitch propellers.
Nothing has come easy with this yacht build. Its January journey from Heesen’s shipyard in Oss to the port of Harlingen where the boat is undergoing final testing in the North Sea was a game of inches. It passed through villages and squeezed beneath canal bridges with less than half a foot to spare, a hair-raising exercise for an undelivered superyacht. It will be turned over to its owner in April.

Galatica launch in Holland
Heesen ’s 265-foot-long superyacht newly named Galactica is the largest yacht the Dutch yard has ever built. It’s so large in fact, that its recent transit under a bridge on the River Maas near the shipyard drew quite a crowd of skeptical yacht watchers.
“It was quite funny,” says Heesen project coordinator Arjan Veldman. “The press and public that were watching from the river bank didn’t understand all the precise measuring operations we conducted. They thought we were just ‘trying’ to pass under the bridge and got stuck. But, for us, these operations are just business as usual. We’ve been going through locks and under bridges like this for over 40 years.
Heesen Yachts flagship Galactica clears several low bridges during its recent launch
“After seeing these photos,” he adds with a smile. My family and friends are still mocking me and asking if I need a tape measure to take with me to work. Who knows, maybe as a joke we’ll create a Heesen tape measure to hand out at the next Monaco Yacht Show, where Galactica will be on display!”
Meanwhile, Galactica is also touted to have a top speed approaching 30 knots. So, instead the normal steel that the largest superyachts are built with, this new flagship is built of aluminum to provide strength to the design without adding extra weight to the overall structure.

Duck! Heesen Yacht flagship Galactica clearers another low bridge in Holland
And even though the top deck needed to be removed to get under that bridge (with mere inches to spare!), you can still see how elegant the exterior is. But that comes as no surprise since it features clean lines and the extensive use of glass comes from the British studio of Winch Design . “The Winch vision for Galactica was to retain Heesen’s sporty DNA but blend it with an innovative, futuristic spin. Curved glass forms smooth, sculpted shapes, creating a feeling of slick, contemporary charm,” said Jim Dixon, Director of Yachts and Aviation at the British design house.

“The brief stressed that she had to have a strong and unique signature whilst retaining the Heesen DNA that we all know and love,” James Russell, Winch Design Associate, Yacht Exteriors adds. “The emphasis was on creating a fast-looking yacht that sits elegantly on the water, a feat that has been cleverly achieved through the use of sculptural, curved forms and perfectly balanced proportions.”
Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design was responsible for the interior design that features a neutral color palette with splashes of blues throughout. But unfortunately, we’ll have to wait to see those photos!
This photo is very, very Dutch!
Meanwhile, Heesen Yachts CEO Arthur Brouwer speaks like a proud parent when he describes watching the recent launch of the company’s newest flagship.
“Building large and complex superyachts is exciting, both from an engineering and construction perspective. We are incredibly fortunate to have the best naval architects, engineers and craftsmen in the country to build our yachts. In spite of all the challenges imposed by the pandemic, we also managed to keep the construction on schedule – which was no mean feat. This yacht is the ultimate expression of our ability to build daring projects that stretch the imagination of its engineers and craftspeople.
And its launch (clearing under that bridge with mere inches to spare!) shows just how precise Dutch engineers can be too!

Heesen’s Galactica Makes it to Sea With Inches to Spare
The 262-ft superyacht had to navigate narrow canals and low bridges after leaving Heesen's shipyard.
By Alex Martin
This is the nail-biting moment a multi-million dollar, 262-ft superyacht navigated its way to the North Sea with just inches of space to spare. The Galactica yacht is the biggest ever built by Dutch shipbuilder Heesen and as these images suggest, there wasn’t much scope to make it any bigger.
Previously known as Project Cosmos , Galactica is the longest and fastest all-aluminum yacht in the world. Due to be delivered in April following four years of construction at Heesen’s shipyard in Oss, she undertook her maiden voyage this week ahead of her final sea trials.
In a testament to precision engineering, the yacht was left with just three inches on either side as she navigated miles of narrow canals, several lock gates and six bridges. With such small margins to play with, the journey from shipyard to sea was meticulously planned over four months. Once plans were in place, Heesen had to wait for a calm day with no winds before giving this fraught journey the green light – the slightest gust would have been enough to set Galactica off course.

But whereas the width of the canal is set in stone, the water levels rise and fall. At one point, Galactica faced the prospect of turning back as the water level in the River Maas was too high for the boat to pass underneath the Heusden Bridge. But after waiting for the tide to be at its lowest, the yacht was eventually able to pass under the Heusden Bridge with three inches of clearance.
Heesen’s CEO Arthur Brouwer said: “Building large and complex superyachts is exciting, both from an engineering and construction perspective. We are incredibly fortunate to have the best naval architects, engineers, and craftsmen in the country to build our yachts. In spite of all the challenges imposed by the pandemic, we also managed to keep the construction of Project Cosmos, now known as MY Galactica , on schedule – which was no mean feat.

While Galactica is the biggest yacht ever built by Heesen, the shipbuilder’s location in Oss has long shaped the design and construction of its projects. That means many key components, such as the radar, can only be attached once it has successfully navigated the canal system. The yacht arrived safely in the port town of Harlingen where the finishing touches will be applied before sea trials are undertaken.

Ordered in 2018 by an anonymous buyer, Galactica was incredibly ambitious, not least because of the size. The brief called for a 262-ft (80m) superyacht capable of speeds approaching 30 knots. The size of the yacht required significant structural strength. A steel hull would have done the job but would have made her too heavy to reach the required top speed. To ensure she was fast enough, they used aluminum, which according to technology at the time, was not strong enough. It was a big problem that no shipbuilder had ever had to face and required out-of-the-box thinking.

Speaking to Elite Traveler in 2020 , sales director Mark Cavendish said: “It is ok to build boats up to 50m (164-ft) in aluminum using conventional construction techniques, what’s called longitudinal framing. When you get this long, to 80m, and the kind of power and weight of engines and the metal, you need to have more structural integrity in the yacht, so we invented this method of construction which we call the Backbone. We have ended up patenting it, so it is something quite special.
“It’s more or less the same principle as the regular steel I-Beam girder. We’ve got the two sides of the ship and then at the bottom we have the keel and they’re all linked through the structure in the middle that gives the rigidity and stops the boat from bending. All the strength is in the structure.”

The aesthetics of Galactica are just as striking as the engineering. Yacht designers Winch Design have blended timeless aesthetics with a dash of Heesen’s forward-thinking DNA. A project of this magnitude requires meticulous planning both inside and out. Every piece of furniture that will go on the boat will be customized to fit the interiors. All the bathrooms will be clad in marble while other areas will use luxurious materials like black onyx, straw marquetry and crystal panels. Galactica also has a bespoke tender, designed and built to look like a miniature version of the superyacht.

A Closer Look at Beyonce's Galactica Star
When not busy running their music and acting careers, power couple Jaz-Z and Beyonce Carter are enjoying their superyacht, Galactica Star. Jay-Z reportedly purchased the yacht for $70 million for Beyonce's birthday after the couple enjoyed it with their daughter Blue Ivy when they rented Galactica during the summer of 2015. The yacht is large and incredibly fuel-efficient. Both the interior and deck are spacious and offer panoramic views of the sea. The yacht comes with a lot of perks including three upper deck areas, several outdoor and indoor lounging areas, a pool and Jacuzzi, a state of the art galley, plenty of dining space, a state of the art control room and accommodations for up to twelve guests and thirteen crew members. Here's a closer look at Beyonce and Jay-Z's yacht, Galactica Star.
A Birthday Gift
Jay-Z and Beyonce were spotted sailing on the Galactica Star with their daughter Blue Ivy in 2015. It's believed that the yacht's owner rented it out to celebrities for nearly a million a week. The couple purchased the yacht from Kola Aluka, a Nigerian oil tycoon for purportedly $70 million. It was a 32nd birthday gift to Beyonce from her husband. The growing family has been spotted sailing their yacht in the Mediterranean Sea several times with family and guests.
Fast and Fuel Efficient
Galactica Star was designed by Omega Yachts and built-in Heesen's Dutch shipyard. The designers and shipyard are well known for creating luxury yachts with the latest technology and fuel efficiency. The 213-foot yacht was launched in 2013. At the time of its launch, it was the world's "fastest displacement yacht". It reaches a top speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. The sleek, aerodynamic design and aluminum hull give this yacht high performance with low resistance. The result is fuel efficiency. The Galactica Star burns much less fuel than other yachts that are the same size. It can travel thousands of nautical miles on just one fuel tank. Stabilizers keep guests comfortable. The control room is state of the art with the latest in technological equipment and touch screen displays. The Galactica Star yacht is said to be highly maneuverable.
Outdoor Space
Omega Yachts stopped at nothing when designing the sleek exterior of the Galactica Star yacht. The multiple decks fit in well with the yacht's sleek, sophisticated design. The yacht is filled with luxury amenities to enjoy travel on the sea. The two-story Beach Club features a Jacuzzi and lounging area on the upper deck with a 10 square meter balcony to lounge on below leading off the air-conditioned lounge and bar area. There is also a sauna. There is a glass-bottom pool on the Galactica Star's main deck with a large 22 square foot swim platform to enter the sea. The yacht also features an ample tender garage under the foredeck to store all of Carter's sea toys for them and their guests to use as they enjoy the water while cruising off the Mediterranean coast. The fore deck's sunbathing deck transforms into a helipad for the Carters and their guest's convenience. There is plenty of space to get fresh sea air along the side decks of the Galactica Star. The outdoor lounge and dining area and the decks blend seamlessly with the yacht's interior.
The award-winning interior design of the Galactica Star yacht was the work of Bannenberg & Rowell of London. The design won an award for best yacht interior design at the World Yacht Trophies in Cannes in 2014. The Galactica Star accommodates up to twelve guests. There is a large master suite on the main deck with a stone and marble master bath as well as a desk and dressing table. The yacht also features a VIP suite on the upper deck. In addition, there are four cabins, two with double beds and two with twin beds. There are also accommodations for thirteen crew.
The Galactica Star features natural wood, with natural tones of cream, gray and brown. There are accents of sea blue and green sea tones. Mirrors increase the sense of space. There are several lounging areas with ample comfortable seating and plasma televisions. Off the main salon is a wide bar that leads to the large dining area. The galley is filled with state of the art cooking equipment. The chic main staircase features a combination of high gloss flooring and plush carpet. The interior spaces have floor to ceiling windows so no one will miss the fact that they are at sea and open spaces to enjoy the fresh sea air.
Beyonce & Jay-Z
Certainly, Beyonce and Jay-Z are enjoying their superyacht whenever they get a chance. They have been spotted on the yacht with family and friends including the couple's children Blue Ivy and twins Rumi and Sir. Throwing $70 million on a yacht that they can enjoy in their spare time isn't that much when you consider Jay-Z's net worth is about $1 billion and Beyonce's net worth is about $355 million. Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) has led a successful career as a rapper, songwriter, producer and record executive since starting his career in 1989. He also has businesses including his Rocawear clothing line, Aspiro technology company, Tidal music streaming service and a sports bar chain, 40/40 Club. Beyonce has had a successful career as a singer since debuting with the group Destiny's Child in 1997 and continued her success with her solo career. She's also an actress with her latest role being the voice of Nala in the new "Lion King" movie. She also sings on the soundtrack. Jay-Z and Beyonce married in 2008 and are one of the most important power couples today. They deserve a little time off from their work to enjoy friends and family on the Galactica Star.

What it's like inside the £50 million yacht that Jay Z and Beyoncé used for their holidays
Jay Z and Beyoncé recently took a holiday on the Galactica Star , an ultra-luxury yacht reportedly owned by Nigerian energy magnate Kola Aluko .
The yacht, which costs £50 million (€65 million, $73 million), is 65 metres in length and can travel at 28 knots (32 mph) in favourable conditions. Because of clever hull technology, the boat is also very fuel-efficient, requiring up to 30% less power for the same speed as boats of a similar size.
The Galactica Star can sleep up to 12 guests with a full-beam master suite, an upper-deck VIP cabin, and four further double cabins. Beyond this, there is a "beach club" with a 10-square-metre balcony, tons of space to entertain guests, and a helipad.
Despite reports that the yacht costs $900,000 a week (£580,000) to charter, it's actually far more exclusive: To stay on the yacht, you also have to know the owner.
Here's what it looks like.
Unveiled in 2014, the Galactica Star won a Neptune Trophy at an event described as "the Oscars of the super-yacht industry."
The interior was made by Bannenberg and Rowell Design, one of the most prestigious names in yacht design. The inside is meant to reflect the sleek, metallic look of the hull.
The Galactica Star sits at 213 feet (65 meters) in length and is 37 feet (11.3 meters) wide.
The yacht is kitted out with everything you could need at sea, catering especially for warmer climates where the guests can relax in the sun.
The Galactica Star has provision to land, and store, a helicopter, making getting to and from the shore an easy task.
The Star can sleep 12 but can accommodate a lot more across the multiple levels with various seating areas. Guests can be looked after by trained staff, who also live onboard.
Despite weighing in at around 560 tons (with a 50% load), the Star can still travel at up to 28 knots (32 mph), making it one of the fastest boats in its class.
The top deck includes a Jacuzzi, bar, large seating area, and viewing platform as well as Galactica Star-embroidered towels.
While the Star is big, it's also thoughtfully designed to look appealing, with swooping curves engineered out of an all-aluminum body.
Beyond guests, the boat can house staff and has a dedicated kitchen used to prepare food for those onboard.
The control room is state of the art, featuring large touch-screen displays that can be used to drive the yacht for over 4,500 nautical miles on a single tank of fuel.
Beyond the 106-square-meter sundeck, complete with bar and Jacuzzi, the Star also has a 64-square-meter "living deck" on the front (which doubles as a helipad) and a further 80 square meters on the lower aft deck when the tenders are moved to the front garage.
At night, the ship becomes beautifully lit and is the perfect location for hosting parties.
The modern and forward-looking design includes a lot of glass, helping to keep the space airy and light.
At £50 million (€65 million, $73 million), the Galactica Star costs about the same as a really big mansion.

Heesen launch Galactica, their largest yacht to date
Heesen claim this to be the biggest and fastest all-aluminium yacht ever built….
At 80 metres, with a gross tonnage of 1,700GT and a top speed of almost 30 knots, Heesen claim that this is the biggest and fastest all-aluminium yacht ever built. This is achieved thanks to the lightweight and low-drag hull design, coutesy of Heesen’s naval architects, an iteration of the Fast Displacement Hull Form devised by van Oossanen, and assembled by Heesen’s welders. Ensuring sufficient longitudinal strength was one of the biggest technological challenges facing Heesen’s engineering team, who designed and patented the Backbone - an intricate, full-length structural reinforcement system. The power comes from diesel propulsion - four engines, two gearboxes, variable-pitch propellers and ultra-innovative Promas rudders.
The superyacht will be able to house 12 guests in six state rooms where they will be able to enjoy a glass bottomed pool with waterfall, glass elevator, and a fully-rated helideck transforms into an open-air cinema.
“Today, we are celebrating the launch of a unique yacht,” said Heesen CEO Arthur Brouwer. “Unique not only for our shipyard, as she is the largest we have ever taken on and represents the pinnacle of our achievements to date. Cosmos is also unique in the industry - the largest and fastest aluminium yacht in her class ever built.”
Cosmos’s exterior comes from the renowned British studio of Winch Design. “The Winch vision for Cosmos was to retain Heesen’s sporty DNA but blend it with an innovative, futuristic spin. Curved glass forms smooth, sculpted shapes, creating a feeling of slick, contemporary charm,” said Jim Dixon, director of Yachts and Aviation at the British design house. “The brief stressed that she had to have a strong and unique signature whilst retaining the Heesen DNA that we all know and love. The emphasis was on creating a fast looking yacht that sits elegantly on the water, a feat that has been cleverly achieved through the use of sculptural, curved forms and perfectly balanced proportions.” Said James Russell, Associate, Yacht Exteriors.
Sinot Yacht Design and Architecture was responsible for the light and soothing interior design. While the overall palette is neutral, splashes of a range of blue hues are infused into the design throughout. The backlit onyx bar with centrally positioned seating is the focal point of the ample and airy space close to the water. Sinot collaborated closely with Heesen’s in-house engineers to ensure that their stringent weight calculations were always met.
Following her launch, Project Cosmos will remain at Heesen for commissioning before undergoing intense sea trials in the North Sea commencing in February. She will be delivered to her owners in April 2022.

70m Heesen motor yacht Galactica Super Nova for sale
The 70.07 metre Heesen motor yacht Galactica Super Nova has been jointly listed for sale by Burgess and Arcon Yachts.
Built in aluminium by Heesen to a design by Espen Oeino International , she was delivered in 2016 as the flagship of the Dutch shipyard.
She welcomes 12 guests in six cabins. The full-beam owner's suite is forward on the main deck and features onyx panels and his and hers bathrooms are linked by a large walk-in rainfall shower. There is a VIP apartment with elevated views on the upper deck, complete with en suite, private study and a lounge that can convert into a seventh guest cabin, a second study or a staff cabin. There are four double cabins, all en suite, on the lower deck.
Her huge sun deck has an oval observation lounge forward of another lounge area with coffee tables. Sliding glass screens keep the wind away from the fully equipped sit-up bar, buffet and open-air dining area. All of this section is shaded by the hardtop. Aft of this is a lounge area with custom club chairs and sun pads surrounded by glass screen to preserve the views while blocking the breeze.
The main deck aft has a six metre infinity pool with resistance jets, spa jets, glass panels in the bottom and an atmospheric waterfall feature below skylights in the overhang above. Forward of the pool is a lounge area and aft steps lead down to a large swim platform.
To starboard, the side deck leads forward to steps leading up to the multipurpose foredeck, which serves as a touch-and-go helipad, outdoor cinema with a four metre screen rigged on removable carbon poles and surround sound, as well as sun loungers and entertainment space. Tenders and toys are stowed below and launched through shell doors.
Twin 5,766hp MTU diesel engines driving propellers and a 4,184 MTU-powered booster jet combine to give her a top speed of 30 knots and she also has a transatlantic range of 4,000 nautical miles at her passage speed of 12 knots. Quantum stabilisers keep her guests comfortable at anchor and underway.
Galactica Super Nova is asking €75,000,000.

At 14 knots, Galactica Star can enjoy a reported 4,200-mile range. As much as the FDHF impressed the buyer of Galactica Star (the project started on spec), so, too, did the yacht's amenities.
