CHAIRMAN & CEO | Mikołaj Król
Gdansk, Poland is an up-and-coming name in the luxury yacht industry and it is also one of the most historic shipbuilding cities in Northern Europe. Conrad Shipyard was founded in 2003, but the Conrad Shipyard site, named after Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad (Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski), was originally established during the German occupation in 1942-1945.
THE SHIPYARD
In partnership with our parent company Marine Projects Ltd., which specializes in commercial shipbuilding, we have all the necessary talent, tools, and facilities to build your dream yacht virtually completely in-house. That includes a robust engineering team actively engaged in the improvement of existing and development of new technologies.

Poland’s Thriving Yacht Building Industry: Yacht Style Special, Part 1
In the first of a two-part feature on Poland’s booming boat building industry, Yacht Style focuses on luxury yacht brands Sunreef, Galeon and Conrad.
Sunreef Yachts has been helping raise the international profile of Polish yacht building since Frenchman Francis Lapp founded the luxury catamaran builder in 2002 in the historic Gdansk Shipyard, on the country’s north coast. And Poland’s profile as a major player in the yachting world recently took another leap after Rafa Nadal was announced as a future owner of the new 80 Sunreef Power.
Rafa Nadal, with Francis Lapp, will receive his 80 Sunreef Power catamaran in 2020
Nadal – one of tennis’s all-time greats, with 18 Grand Slam titles – viewed the model’s world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, although his customised version, hull number four, is due for delivery in 2020.
“As someone from an island, the sea is part of our lives and it’s not a secret that I love the sea,” said the Spaniard, who has previously visited and chartered Sunreef catamarans. “When I’m at home in Mallorca, I try to go out and find that time where I can just enjoy my time on a boat. I am very happy to be on board with the Sunreef Yachts family and would like to thank Francis Lapp for making this possible.”
Lapp’s company has been on a roll in the past year and has already sold over a dozen units of its 80 sailing catamaran, which only made its debut at Cannes last year. From producing about 10-14 units a year, Sunreef completed 17 in 2018 and this year expects to produce about 24, a company record.
“It has been a spectacular year for us,” says Karolina Paszkiewicz, PR and Marketing Director of Sunreef. The company now has over 720 employees, with about 500 from Poland and over 200 from Ukraine, a remarkable head count for a company that customises the layout and interior of every yacht.
Sunreef has sold over a dozen units of its 80 sailing catamaran
Yet Sunreef’s super-luxurious catamarans are a stark contrast to the historic but decaying brick-walled sheds in which they’ve been built for the past 17 years. The company is now in a transition to a nearby four-hectare (40,000sqm) facility, with the move from Gdansk Shipyard set to be complete by 2020.
GDANSK BECOMES BOATING HUB
The enormous shipyard is situated on the side of the Martwa Wisla river and on Ostrow Island, and established Gdansk as one of northern Europe’s leading shipbuilding cities.
It was also the site of iconic protests in 1980 led by former shipyard electrician Lech Walesa that led to the foundation of the Solidarity movement and eventually the end of communist rule. In the mid-2000s, Jean-Michel Jarre and then Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour played big concerts here in tribute to the movement.
Gdansk Shipyard was founded as a state-owned company in 1945 on the sites of former German shipyards considerably damaged in the Second World War, while other large-scale shipyards emerged in neighbouring Gdynia, as well as Szczecin to the west.
Sunreef, founded in Gdansk in 2002, displays its catamarans in the Old Town for the Pomorskie Rendez-Vous
Poland also developed as a boatbuilding nation after the Soviet leadership chose it to produce yachts, among other products, for all countries from the Eastern Bloc. Even today, many yachts cruising the waters of the former Soviet states – Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia – are labelled as ‘Made in Poland’.
In the 1980s, yachts built in Poland started to be exported, primarily to northern and western Europe, and North America. However, with the political changes following the end of communism, many of the biggest yacht-building companies went bankrupt and new privately owned companies emerged.
BOAT FACTORY OF THE WORLD
Poland became home to production facilities for many foreign brands, including several from yachting’s two biggest conglomerates – France’s Beneteau Group and USA’s Brunswick Group.
In 1992, Jeanneau was among the first foreign companies to build boats in Poland. Today the Beneteau Group has a 16-hectare (160,000sqm) facility in Ostroda, an hour’s drive southeast of Gdansk, that employs about 900 people and builds Beneteau and Jeanneau boats, including the Merry Fisher 895 Marlin that features in this issue’s Islands & Coasts .
Sailing boats by prolific Polish builder Delphia Yachts, which was acquired by the Beneteau Group late last year and is now focusing on motor boats
Last year, Beneteau Group added a second facility in Poland – and another brand – when it bought Delphia Yachts, one of the country’s biggest yacht builders and now focused on motor boats at its facility in Olecko in the northeast of this country of 38 million people.
Brunswick brands like Sea Ray, Bayliner and Quicksilver are also built in Poland, while other foreign companies that have boats built in the country include Hanse from western neighbour Germany, Denmark’s X-Yachts, Finland’s Axopar, and Norway’s Windy and Askeladden.
The vast majority of yachts built in Poland, including by local brands, are exported and overall production has ramped up dramatically in recent years. According to Polboat (Polish Chamber of Marine Industry and Water Sports), the value of the country’s exported boats doubled from 2013 to 2017, rising from €241m to €484m.
Polboat also announced that the country’s annual production recently returned to its pre-2008 financial crisis high and has since bettered it, with 23,000 boats in a year and turnover increasing by 15 per cent. About 95 per cent of the boats are exported, primarily to Norway, France, USA, Netherlands and Germany.
Polboat President Sebastian Nietupski says Poland has benefited from European grants
Furthermore, Polboat states that Poland is Europe’s leading producer of motorboats with outboard engines from 6-11m (20-36ft), while globally it’s second only to the USA.
“Poland produces a lot of boats for local brands and also a huge number for foreign brands. This shows we’ve built trust and that this is one of the best countries to produce boats and invest in,” says Sebastian Nietupski, President of Polboat.
“This is now one of the best times ever in Poland as we have benefited from European grants for new projects and investments, so many of our boatyards have brand-new machinery and the latest technology. This is a really strong asset.
“But we don’t just want to produce or follow. We want to be leaders, to be the best. We want Poland to be known for the best fuel-economy solutions or the most innovative designs. In fact, because of brands like Galeon, foreign shipyards are now copying our design ideas.”
GALEON MOTORS AHEAD
There’s a healthy representation of local brands among the massive number of Polish-built boats exported around the world, with Galeon leading the local charge and still growing fast, globally and particularly in the US.

Established in 1982 in the communist era, Galeon now has 1,400 staff working on 30-49ft models in its inland site in Straszyn and 50-78ft yachts at its bigger site, with marina, along the Martwa Wisla river.
From building about 80 boats in 2016, its units increased to 120 the following year and 150 in 2018, even though the company is slowing down production of its 30-40ft models.
Across the world, Galeon has become renowned for innovations like the rotating cockpit sofa and ‘Beach Mode’ drop-down sides, features first incorporated on the Tony Castro-designed 500 Fly unveiled at Cannes in 2015. Such features have since been rolled out on other models including the 460 and 640.
The brand’s huge growth in the US has followed its sales partnership from 2016 with MarineMax, the world’s largest yacht retailer, while other dealers around the world include Hong Kong-headquartered Asiamarine and Alexander Marine Australia.
“Our innovations have brought us a lot of success around the world in the past few years, although we’ve only been really active in the US in the last three,” said Grzegorz ‘Greg’ Tuszynski, Galeon’s Managing Director.
Galeon’s riverside facility has a marina and is the larger of its two production sites
“Last year we were already fourth in sales among 40-70ft motor yachts in the US, making us the top European or non-American brand. We expect this ranking to increase in 2019 and are hopeful of eventually becoming No. 1, while also growing in Europe, Asia and Australia.”
CONRAD BRINGS SUPERYACHT ACCLAIM
Poland enjoyed further acclaim in May when the Conrad 133’ Viatoris , built in Gdansk, was honoured at the World Superyacht Awards in London, winning Best Displacement Motor Yacht 300- 499GT – 30-47.9m.
Conrad Shipyard has generally been a custom-boat builder and has in the region of just 80 full-time staff, but can also draw on the resources of its parent company, Marine Projects, which has about 400 people working in its waterfront site on the Martwa Wisla.
With a name inspired by Heart of Darkness author Joseph Conrad (born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski), Conrad was established in 2003 and has worked on a wide variety of motor yachts, classic tugboats and large sailing yachts, including tall ships such as the 67m Le Quy Don for the Vietnamese navy.
However, when the 40m Viatori s, designed by Reymond Langton for a Russian owner, was shown at both Cannes and the Monaco Yacht Show last year, it enabled Conrad’s build quality to be compared with the most renowned superyacht builders.
Conrad’s 133ft Viatoris, pictured in the heart of Gdansk’s Old Town, was a winner at the 2019 World Superyacht Awards, another success for Polish yacht building
“Presenting Viatoris at Cannes and Monaco put us in a completely new market. Viatoris showed we can be compared with superyachts from the Netherlands, for example, and for a good price,” says Michael Michalczewski, Conrad’s Marketing and Sales Director.
“Also, as it was more of a commercially viable project, we can now go down the route of offering semi-custom builds, using the Conrad 133’s naval architecture.”
Because of its rich shipbuilding history, Poland is well known for its body work, and local shipyards often construct the hulls or superstructures for globally renowned superyacht builders, particularly from Germany and the Netherlands.
Dutch conglomerate Damen Group, the parent company of renowned superyacht builder Amels, has a marine-components facility in Gdansk and its own shipyards in Gdynia and also Kozle in the south, west of Krakow. In recent years, Damen Shipyards Gdynia built the 140-tonne aluminium superstructure for the 83m Here Comes The Sun , Amels’ largest yacht to date.

Poland: Europe’s quiet achiever, major innovator
- December 15, 2022
Poland remains Europe’s leading producer of outboard motorboats, many for international brands, yet the country is also a hotbed of innovation and ambition. This year alone, Sunreef has launched two sailing catamarans from its pioneering Eco series, Galeon has released three models ranging from a 50-knot outboard to an 83ft flagship, while Conrad launched its biggest luxury superyacht to date.
Galeon has been celebrating its 40 th anniversary in 2022
Marking four decades since it was founded in 1982 during Poland’s communist era, Galeon has been celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2022 with a bang.
One of the world’s leading mid-range luxury yacht builders, Galeon has about 1,600 staff working in Gdansk on 30-49ft models in its inland site in Straszyn and yachts 50ft upwards at its bigger site along the Martwa Wisla river, where it has its own marina.
Galeon’s flagship 800 Fly
This year’s new models from its two facilities in and around the north-coast city have included the 375 GTO, 440 Fly and long-awaited flagship 800 Fly, which was a world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October.
The 375 GTO and 440 Fly had their global debuts at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September, although seven weeks earlier the former was unveiled for its Polish premiere at the third Polboat Yachting Festival in Gdynia, a nearby sister city to Gdansk. (The fourth Polboat Yachting Festival will be held from July 27-30, 2023).
Galeon’s 375 GTO
Galeon was again the leading exhibitor at the Polboat Yachting Festival, which was held at Marina Yacht Park and organised for the third year by Polboat (Polish Chamber of Marine Industry and Water Sports).
The builder displayed the 375 GTO alongside the 325 GTO, the first model of the brand’s Grand Touring Outboard series, and also showed a 400 Fly, 460 Fly and 680 Fly, a 425 HTS sport cruiser and a 510 Skydeck.
Galeon display at Polboat Yachting Festival
However, the 375 GTO was the star attraction, as the first example of the new GTO series growing in length. There was also extra interest because the unit on show was built for speed … serious speed.
Engine options on the 38-footer include triple 300hp or 400hp Mercury outboards, but if you really want to muscle up, you can upgrade further to twin 600hp Mercury V12 Verado outboards. This was the case on the second hull, chosen for the model’s Polish premiere.

Pawel Gorski, Galeon’s Business Development Manager, said the effect of these twin beasts was astonishing. “We almost touched 50 knots. We were basically at 49.5 knots,” he said. “It’s sharp, very stable but very fast, so you have to hold on when you’re turning at speed. It’s a really nice ride.”
BOATBUILDING FORCE Sunreef Yachts, which employs 2,000 staff across its two shipyards in Gdansk, displayed a 60 Power catamaran at the Gdynia show, but otherwise the models were typically smaller, more in keeping with the Central European country’s status as a world leader in the production of small outboard motorboats.
The 2022 Polboat Yachting Festival featured about 100 boats
Boasting a population of 38 million, Poland has 112 yacht builders employing 48,800 staff plus 121 boat accessory and marine equipment manufacturers with a further 6,780 employees, according to figures from Polboat.
Last year, the country’s production of 24,000 boats included 22,000 outboard motorboats up to 39ft, with small sailing boats making up two-thirds of the remaining 2,000, according to Polboat figures. Most are for foreign brands and 90-95 per cent are exported, whether it’s north to Norway, west to Germany, Netherlands and France, or across the Atlantic to the USA.
The Polboat Yachting Festival is held at Marina Yacht Park in Gdynia
Since its modern economy emerged post-communism, Poland has become home to production facilities for many leading international brands including several from yachting’s two biggest conglomerates – France’s Groupe Beneteau and USA’s Brunswick Group. In 1992, Jeanneau became one of the first foreign companies to build boats in the country.
Most yachts are built in four northern regions: Western Pomerania (Szczecin), Pomerania (Gdansk, Gdynia), Warmia-Masuria (Ostroda, Olecko, Gizycko) and Podlasie (Augustow) to the east.
Polish brands and Polish-built models dominate the Polboat Yachting Festival
An hour’s drive southeast of Gdansk, Groupe Beneteau has a huge facility in Ostroda that builds Beneteau and Jeanneau boats. In 2018, Groupe Beneteau added a second facility in Poland – and another brand – when it bought Delphia Yachts, one of the country’s biggest yacht builders and now focused on motor boats at its Olecko facility.
Brunswick brands like Sea Ray, Bayliner and Quicksilver are also built in Poland, while other foreign companies with boats built in the country include Germany’s Hanse, Denmark’s X-Yachts, Norway’s Windy and Askeladden, and Finland’s Axopar and Saxdor.
THIRD POLBOAT FESTIVAL International brands at this year’s Polboat Yachting Festival included the likes of Nimbus, Bayliner, Saxdor and Windy, but the show is a far bigger occasion for local builders such as Parker, Northman, Balt, Cobrey and emerging companies including D-Boat, Vulcan, Nautic and VTS.
Polboat Yachting Festival featured fellow local builders like Balt, Northman and Parker
Parker showed four models, Cobrey showed three including its 50 Fly, Vulcan presented its JP 47, Balt debuted its flagship 37 Grand, while the Northman 1200 was among other boats in the water.
In the mid-1980s, Parker entered the leisure boat business in Poland as the distributor for Mercury Marine then started building boats in the 1990s, initially focused on RIBs. Today, the company has about 1,000 staff split between building Parker boats up to 38ft and for foreign brands including Nimbus and Windy at its Model Art boatyard.
Cobrey, founded in 2004, showed three motor yachts including its 50 Fly and 42 Fly
Meanwhile, D-Boat co-founder Szymon Zielinski was proud to announce 16 sales to date – including four to the US – of the 37-knot Diamond 550, an impressive return since exhibiting the first hull at the show’s predecessor in Gdynia in 2019.
Back then, Zielinski was a first-time boatbuilder and part-time DJ, but is now fully focused on D-Boat, proudly making the step from start-up to production builder.
The four-day show featured regular water toy demos and trials
This year’s exhibition also offered lively watersports demos and a variety of toys including SeaDoo and Kawasaki water scooters, RIBs from Sportis, Airslide hovercraft, as well as Awake jetboards and Hobie kayaks presented by Passionautica. Mercedes-Benz BMG Goworowski was among the event’s luxury partners, while Marina Yacht Park owned by PHN Group was a strategic partner.
“Poland is one of the world’s best-performing exporters of boats and yachts, so it became obvious that we should have an exhibition like the Polboat Yachting Festival,” said Michal Bak, General Secretary of Polboat, whose representatives attended this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival and Monaco Yacht Show, before hosting a booth at Metstrade in Amsterdam in November.

“The third edition was a huge success. We see a lot of improvement compared to last year and have been receiving great feedback from exhibitors and visitors. This year, we brought in more luxury brands and international exhibitors, and truly believe the 2023 show will provide an even greater experience for visitors.”
LUXURY CATS FROM SUNREEF A Sunreef catamaran hosted the opening ceremony for the second year, with the 60 Power playing the role a year after Double Happiness, the Sunreef 80 sailing cat that was the star of the 2021 show.
The 60 Sunreef Power in front of the tented booths
Like Galeon, Sunreef has been hosting a notable anniversary this year, having been founded in the Gdansk Shipyard in 2002 by Francis Lapp (click for 20th anniversary feature) . The French entrepreneur, who has also held Polish citizenship since 2014, has overseen the company’s growth to become the world’s premier builder of large luxury catamarans, highlighted by the launch of the 100 Sunreef Power in late 2021.
As the company celebrates its 20th anniversary, Lapp reflected on why he chose to build in Poland, where he had already been working for a decade before building his first luxury sailing cat, the Sunreef 74 Che launched in 2003.
A 60 Sunreef Power hosts the opening ceremony led by Polboat President Sebastian Nietupski
“Poland has a lot of experience in boat building,” Lapp said. “When I started Sunreef Yachts, I was already established in Poland with my business. I knew the country’s potential and had no doubt that it was the right place to start building yachts.”
Sunreef currently employs about 2,000 staff across its Gdansk Shipyard site and its new 80,000sqm site further east along the Martwa Wisla river.
Fernando Alonso on the first Sunreef 80 Eco, which debuted in 2022
Over the summer, during a tour of the two shipyards, Sunreef was building 36 yachts simultaneously, a remarkable figure considering the best-selling models are the Sunreef 80 sailing cat and 80 Sunreef Power, while the smallest models are the Sunreef 50 and 60, and 60 Sunreef Power.
Furthermore, the complexity of models has increased with the launch of the Eco range, in which an advanced solar-panel ‘skin’ is integrated into the hull sides, superstructure, hard top roof and even the mast on sailing models.
The first Sunreef 60 Eco also launched in 2022
Other green tech on Eco models can include hydrogeneration, wind turbines, ultra-light lithium batteries, and sustainable materials used in the finish and décor or even superstructure. This year, Sunreef has launched the first 80 Eco and 60 Eco sailing models, as the builder works hard to keep up with demand.
“The Gdansk Shipyard has a great reputation and has access to many skilled workers, although finding enough workforce for both sites has been a challenge recently,” Lapp said. “That’s why we employ many workers from abroad and are on a constant search for more staff.”
SUPERYACHTS CONRAD Conrad Shipyard, named after Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad, was founded in Gdansk in 2003, a year after Sunreef. The brand was created as a luxury-yacht arm of the Marine Projects shipyard established in 1989 and today the companies have about 400 staff between them.
The 40m Viatoris, the first C133 by Conrad
Mikolaj Krol, son-in-law of the shipyard’s owner, is CEO of Conrad and has overseen the company’s up and downs for almost 20 years.
“I was green when I started, but my father-in-law had faith in me running the company. If I had known at that time how hard the work would be, I would never have done it,” laughed Krol, who was initially an architect. “Anyway, after many years of superhuman effort by everyone, I’m proud of where we are. We’ve outlasted some competitors elsewhere in Europe.”
There’s good reason for his optimism. Conrad’s business started with the 27m Bill Dixon-designed Escape S (now Chillin ) launched in 2005 and has included a hugely diverse range of custom motor and sailing yachts, refits and short-lived series.
Interior of Viatoris
The early years also included two stylish 15m tugboats developed with Polish designer Juliusz Strawinski, the jet-powered Capo series of aluminium motorboats, and the 55-knot SUC Docksta line of luxuriously finished patrol-boat-style vessels built for Middle East clients.
Later models included Lunar (2013), the 35m aluminium ketch motorsailer, and Bellkara (2016), a 28m aluminium sloop, while in 2014 the yard completed a refit of the classic 46m steel schooner Malcolm Miller launched in 1968.
However, it was the 40m Viatoris for a repeat client that put Conrad on the luxury superyacht map, especially following its world premiere at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show.
The 44m Ace is the first C144S by Conrad
Featuring an exterior by UK-based firm Reymond Langton and naval architecture by Dutch studio Diana Yacht Design, the C133 model won multiple awards and inspired the upcoming C144S that has received not one but two orders.
Like the 393GT Viatoris , the C144S is designed by Reymond Langton and Diana Yacht Design but is bigger in every way, with an overall length of 44m, a beam of 8.9m and a volume of 494GT. The S is for ‘straight bow’, with the plumb bow adding extra volume for a yacht with an owner’s suite, four VIP guest cabins, four double cabins for crew and a captain’s cabin on the bridge.
Notably, the C144S is the first Conrad yacht to not feature interior design by Krol himself, with Italy’s m2atelier taking on the role. The first hull, Ace, launched in October (click for article) and was handed over to its Swiss owner in December, while the second hull sold to a French client is scheduled to launch in 2023.
Ace in Gdansk, home to Poland’s leading luxury yacht builders
“The C144S is like a big sister of the C133,” Krol said. “The first hull is for someone who liked Viatoris , but wanted a more modern silhouette, a plumb bow and more volume for crew. Both have timeless designs and I think both Viatoris and the C144S will still look great in years to come.”
After years of one-off superyachts, Conrad will mark its 20 th anniversary in 2023 with ongoing production of their biggest model to date while promoting the C133, C133S, C144S, C155 and other designs on the board.
“We’re now in a position to start building customised superyachts on a more regular production scale,” said Krol. “However, there’s a special spirit at Conrad because we’re not too big and every client can still discuss everything with me directly. I’m personally connected with each yacht – they’re like my babies.”

The mBoat is a rapidly growing boatyard that focuses on building and equipping motor boats and floating houses. Thanks to its extensive experience in boat rental in the Masuria region (customer service, powerboat service), mBoat can guarantee professional advice on the selection of motor boats from its extensive fleet portfolio (boats for sale and rent). We are a member of:
Long-standing production of boats in Poland – we draw our knowledge from the best builders
Boat building in poland – leaders in europe.
HIGH-QUALITY TACTICAL SOLUTIONS
The Polish marine industry has a long tradition. Many boatbuilders were established after World War I when Poland regained its independence in 1918. There are also shipyards that were already known in the 19th century.
Over the last two decades, the production of yachts in Poland has been growing rapidly. At the beginning of the 1990s, the value of about 3000 finished yachts was several million dollars. Currently, the production amounts to over 20,000 sailboats and motor yachts and is worth several hundred million dollars. Let’s also add that between 2005 and 2007, when production worldwide grew at a rate of several percent per year, the sales of Polish yachts exceeded 22.5 thousand per year! It can be assumed that this is also a real potential of Polish boat builders. The global economic crisis has caused a deep recession in the maritime industry. In the United States sales fell by more than 50 % and the situation in Europe was only slightly better. Polish boat manufacturers are highly dependent on exports, as about 95 % of their production is shipped abroad.

Boat manufacturing since 19th century
The largest and most important boat builders are located in four Polish regions: Western Pomerania, Pomerania, Warmia and Mazury and Suwałki. This is where more than 80% of Polish sailing yachts and houseboats are produced. These four regions are the cradle of Polish sailing and maritime industry.
It is there that the industry’s scientific and research facilities are developed, which in turn has given it a strong position on international markets. It took many years and many skilled people to create this base. Our high position is the result of the work of people who have spent many years designing and building sailing yachts and power boats ( day cruiser , pilothouse and cabin cruiser ).
For more than 40 years we have belonged to a block of countries where each country has designated sectors to specialize. Poland has been chosen as the main producer of tanks ( displacement hull ) and yachts ( planing hull ), among others.
The production of armoured combat vehicles has not been a great success, but the production of yachts has managed quite well and is also flourishing in today’s market economy. Many yachts sailing in the waters of the former Soviet Union – Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – are already labelled “Made in Poland”.
However, it was only after the political transformation that the market economy was able to develop freely in Poland, as well as the maritime industry, with its extraordinary dynamism. Foreign capital began to flow into Poland. The biggest producers in the world placed orders for their yachts and boats in Polish shipyards, not only because the labour force is cheaper in Poland, but also because there is a professional and highly skilled staff in Poland who can cope with difficult production (like boats with flybridge ). Seeing a chance for profit, new domestic economic entities are created, as well as boat manufacturers and factories producing yacht equipment.

Poland Pleasure Boat Market
The pleasure boat building industry in Poland is very well developed, and Poland is ranked fifth in the world in yacht production volume. Poland is the world’s second largest producer of small yachts up to 10 meters in length (after the United States). It is one of the few countries in Europe bucking the trend with increased boat production each year. According to Polboat, the Polish Chamber of Marine Industry and Water Sports, the annual production of yachts in Poland ranges at 22,000 units. Cost-effective labor rates, a skilled workforce and the excellent quality of Polish yachts have created an attractive base for Poland’s boat building. Many globally known brands are produced in Poland, including Brunswick, Jeanneau-Benetau Group, Windy, Sea Ray, Bayliner and Askeladden. Every third yacht sailing in Europe was built in Poland. Some of the Polish builders produce parts of the boats for European shipyards, and there are many shipyards that are subcontractors for foreign brands. Although builders are mostly focused on boats from 6 to 10 meters, there are shipyards producing larger boats, superyachts and luxury catamarans for individual orders. Seventy percent of total annual output is provided by seven leading shipyards: Galeon (yachts and motorboats up to 25 meters), Delphia Yachts (yachts and motorboats of 7-15 meters), Sunreef Yachts (large custom-made luxury yachts: catamarans, power boats and superyachts), Ostroda Yacht (motorboats and sailing boats for Jeanneau-Beneteau brands), BaltYacht, Model Art/Parker, and Slepsk. Nighty five percent of local production is exported worldwide, mainly to Western Europe (Norway, France, Germany, Sweden, Finland), North America, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. The local market is supplied in similar proportions by local and imported boats. With an import value of $2.2 million, the U.S. is the fourth largest import market of pleasure boats for Poland, with motorboats being the major category imported. The total number of boats registered in Poland is estimated at 27,000 (while the total number of boats stationed in Poland is estimated at 60,000). Motorboats represent the major market segment (80% of all boats registered), and pleasure boats of up to 10 meters dominate the local market (89% of all registered boats). Although the number of registered yachts of more than 10 meters long is increasing every year, small boats enjoy the best popularity. The demand for high-end yachts and motorboats is small. Since the local production of pleasure boats is very well developed, the boat accessories segment represents good prospects for local and foreign suppliers. Opportunities include almost all accessories, including also high-end products. The local production of boat engines is insignificant, and the majority of them are imported. Major engine brands present in the Polish market are Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda (outboard engines) and Mercury. There are plenty of companies involved in yacht chartering that also represent a significant market opportunity. During last several years, with funds available from the EU infrastructure cohesion program, Poland has witnessed development of marinas and yacht ports. There are 38 marinas and 1236 harbors in the country, including over 60 marinas and ports located on the Baltic Sea, with capacity to accommodate 3,600 boats. Inland ports and marinas located on various waterways and lakes can accommodate over 60,000 boats. Also, local authorities’ strategy is to integrate existing waterways for better sailing opportunity.
