$125M super yacht reportedly owned by an English billionaire is cruising the Great Lakes

No, your eyes don't deceive you — that is a 217-foot, $125-million super yacht cruising the Great Lakes.

The Hampshire, reportedly owned by English billionaire Andrew Currie, has been making its way around the Upper Peninsula this month, stopping in various destinations, including Mackinac Island.

Currie, a biofuel executive who is a director with chemical company Ineos, is worth about $3.5 billion, making him the 504th richest person on Forbes' billionaires 2019 list .

While Currie is not publicly connected to the ship, MLive and the Mining Gazette   report the multibillionaire owns the Hampshire. Currie is also connected to Hampshire I, another super yacht that appeared at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The Dutch-built Hampshire can sleep 12 guests and carries a crew of 17 people, according to Boat International . The boat also features an on-deck pool.

The yacht stopped in Milwaukee on Aug. 7, according to the  Milwaukee Business Journal , then headed toward Traverse City.  TV6 also caught the yacht Aug. 12 in Marquette's Lower Harbor, where the station reported that crew members stopped on shore to support local business.

A Mackinac Island State Harbor employee said the Hampshire docked at the island Monday and was still there Tuesday morning. According to boat tracking site Vessel Finder , the yacht has a set destination of "cruising Great Lakes."

Maui Yacht Owner: ‘I Didn’t Know What I Was Getting Into’

Jim Jones says he wants to make things right, but former employees and Maui residents say he shouldn't have a boat.

Jim Jones says he wants to make things right, but former employees and Maui residents say he shouldn’t have a boat.

The owner of a luxury yacht that ran aground last month in Honolua Bay is trying to salvage his reputation as efforts continue this week to remove his 94-foot Sunseeker from a delicate reef off Maui.

“We are taking full responsibility for this,” Noelani Yacht Charters owner Jim Jones said Thursday. “We’re not running.”

That assurance may not be enough to persuade Maui politicians, community advocates and local mariners who say he shouldn’t stay in business at all. Several of his former workers have said he repeatedly ignored state boating regulations and skirted recommended safety practices, to the point where multiple people who worked with Jones said they quit because of risky behavior.

“He shouldn’t be allowed to have a boat,” a former worker said, speaking on the condition of anonymity .

Jones said he started out with a dream to buy a boat. A woodworker by trade, he began looking for one a few years ago around Honolulu and first set his eyes on a 65-footer — a “big monster boat.”

But his friend, a boat captain, cautioned him against getting one so big for his first vessel. Plus, harbors to store boats of that size are scarce in Hawaii. Where would he put it?

So Jones kept looking until 2020, when he settled on what he thought was the perfect opportunity: a 74-foot yacht that came with its own slip in Kewalo Basin Harbor. It had been used for charters in the past, and by renting it out in the future, Jones hoped it would pay for itself. The owner agreed to let him pay it off over time, sealing the deal.

In the height of the pandemic, Jones began pouring his resources into marketing and establishing a “luxury yacht image,” equipped with private chefs, bartenders and local musicians.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what I was getting into. I just figured it was something to pay the bills,” Jones said. “And then once this thing took off, we’re going, ‘Holy shit.’”

Now Jones is trying to assure government officials and the community that he will cover the cost of a nearly $500,000 salvage job .

On Feb. 20, Jones said he was on a family outing, spending the weekend in Honolua Bay, when his mooring line failed while attached to a mooring that’s only allowed to be used for two hours at a time.

The Nakoa, a 94-foot yacht that Jones said he brought to Hawaii in December, ended up drifting onto the reef. By the next day, the hull had been punctured, and diesel fuel spilled into the water leading into one of Maui’s most beloved marine sanctuaries .

In the days that followed, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources announced that it was putting up $460,000 to try to haul the 120-ton yacht away. But after unsuccessful attempts and delays because of stormy weather, the yacht remained on Thursday evening.

DLNR officials said earlier this week that the salvage ship Kahi, operated by Visionary Marine, will return to Maui on Friday or Saturday.

“We’ve been talking to the DLNR to let them know we’re not leaving them with the bill,” Jones said.

Jones said he was working with his insurance company to cover the cost. Asked to provide a copy of his coverage, he declined, citing the current investigation into the incident. He said he didn’t know the specifics of his insurance policy or how much it covered.

“I feel his actions were extremely irresponsible,” said Maui County Council member Tamara Paltin, who has long fought to protect Honolua Bay. “I don’t think he fully understands how special a place Honolua is to so many of us and just how much aggravation he has caused our community.”

As Jones works with attorneys, insurance agents and the state, he said he’s also determined to make amends with the Maui community and work to restore his company’s reputation. Since the incident in Honolua, he said he’s continued to run charters on his Oahu-based yacht, the Noelani, which will help him pay the debts he owes.

But the Noelani has its own history of problems. The boat caught fire in Kewalo Basin Harbor in October, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.

Asked about the incident, Jones said the fire broke out in a guest suite, just as he was flying out of state to purchase the Nakoa. He blamed the fire on incandescent light bulbs that are common in older boats. Fortunately, he said, the Honolulu Fire Department responded and contained the fire from spreading out of the room.

“When I first got a boat, my friends were telling me, ‘No, don’t get a boat; it’s nonstop problems,’” Jones said. “There’s constantly stuff going on.”

But mariners interviewed by Civil Beat say fires aren’t one of the nonstop problems boat owners regularly face.

“I can’t think of a reported fire incident in Maalaea Harbor in the 40 years I’ve been here,” said Michael Wildberger, a captain on Maui who’s run thousands of snorkel tours.

Catering To The Jet Set

After buying his first yacht in 2020, Jones said he quickly realized that catering to the ultra-wealthy in search of day trips on megayachts was an untapped market in Hawaii. High-end hotels were looking for luxury activities to send their clients on, Jones said.

In his marketing strategy, he made it clear: Noelani Yacht Charters wasn’t a basic fishing or snorkeling charter. His website advertises trips on Maui starting at $9,800 .

“We cater to these guys that are flying in on their private jets,” Jones said.

delta victor yacht bay harbor owner

For almost two years, Jones grew his business with the Noelani, until he found an investor willing to help him acquire the Nakoa, the vessel that ran aground last month.

At first, Jones said he thought the investor would pay the transportation costs to have the Nakoa sent to Hawaii from overseas. When the investor suddenly said he wouldn’t cover that cost, Jones said he put up the money for the transport, which meant he missed out on paying almost $290,000 for the final payment he owed for the Noelani.

He was later sued for not making that payment, as well as failing to pay back $100,000 he borrowed from another person to pay for the Noelani.

Jones downplayed the lawsuits, calling them mutual agreements and “just records of the payment plans that we’ve created.”

With the Nakoa, Jones dreamed of expanding his business to allow multinight charters to Maui, where he planned to whisk clients away to snorkel trips around Molokini or head over to Hulopoe Bay on Lanai. He said he discovered Honolua Bay during trips on the Noelani, describing it as a place he couldn’t believe he could visit with a yacht of that size.

Jones said he took his family to Honolua for a holiday weekend last month, and tied up at the mooring that’s only supposed to be used for two hours at a time. Asked if he was aware of the rule, Jones said was never informed of it by the Coast Guard or DLNR but had been “getting flak from day one” from Maui tour companies in the bay.

“When you have the same company coming in, they’re switching boats every two hours,” he said. “What’s the difference of that versus us just staying there?”

It’s not the only law that community members have complained about Noelani Yacht Charters allegedly violating.

A month before the Nakoa ran aground, Tina Wildberger, South Maui’s former state lawmaker, wrote to DLNR about a dinghy shuttling passengers between the yacht and Kihei Boat Ramp, which she said isn’t allowed without a permit.

“There’s some serious high end pirate action happening here with these yachts,” Wildberger said in her January email to DLNR. “Does this vessel have a special permit to pick up passengers at Kihei Boat Ramp today?”

The next day, Wildberger got her answer: The boat didn’t have a special permit.

Jones said he often stopped at Kihei Boat Ramp to make crew runs, including going to Ace Hardware. He denied picking up passengers though. He said that he doesn’t have a commercial permit for the Nakoa, but that he operates his business in a way that allows him to get around that.

“That’s a whole other gray area,” Jones said.

His first boat, the Noelani, has a commercial permit. But Jones said he ran the Nakoa with a workaround called “bareboat charters.” That means that he rents the boat out to people without providing any crew. Instead, he can suggest when they rent the boat that the clients hire the crew that he’s vetted ahead of time. It’s a business model that’s popular among yacht rental businesses.

For now, Jones said he’ll keep running tours on the Noelani out of Oahu while charting his next steps. He’s hoping to find a replacement for the Nakoa and continue his expansion to Maui — if residents will have him.

“I’m hoping that we can meet everybody personally, to apologize to them face to face — let them know that and show them that I am local,” Jones said. “I think once we talk, they’ll realize I’m just like them.”

Craig Stolzenfels began his hospitality career while attending West Virginia University. After a summer internship at a golf resort in West Virginia overlooking Cheat Lake, Craig realized that hospitality was his passion.

Craig has been fortunate enough to work with some incredible resorts. Craig began his management career at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania, leading a team that earned the coveted AAA 5-Diamond rating and a Forbes Travel Guide 5-Star award.

Career goals took him and his family to the beautiful British Virgin Islands, where he ran a resort on Virgin Gorda for over 2½ years. Biras Creek Resort was a 31-villa ocean-front property. Biras Creek Resort was renowned worldwide for its incredible service and high-quality food and beverage program. The resort genre fits Craig’s management style, and he enjoyed his time at the resort.

Upon returning to the U.S., Craig was hired to run two ski resort hotels; one at Seven Springs Mountain Resort and the other at the Hidden Valley Resort, both near Champion, Pennsylvania. A year and a half later, he concluded that small unique properties are where his heart lies. While overseeing 700 rooms and two ski resorts was an exciting opportunity, Craig missed being able to provide a certain sense of refinement and luxury to resort guests.

A year ago he was given the opportunity to take the helm at The Inn at Leola Village, a boutique property in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Inn at Leola Village has a 4-Star Forbes Travel Guide rating for lodging and a restaurant with a 5- star rating. While the property was beautiful, Craig and his family knew the location was not ideal for them.

When given the opportunity to work for Victor International for the second time, and live and work along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, it was an opportunity too exciting to pass up. “Luxury,” “Unique,” and “Independent” are three descriptors of a property that Craig most likes leading; the Bay Harbor Village Hotel & Conference Center is an ideal match.

Made in America, Invictus is designed for world domination

The owner of the new Delta Invictus is very pleased. ‘The marble work throughout the boat is incredible,’ he indicates as he shows me around. ‘Our goal was to build an American boat that would rival any boat coming out of Europe, and I think Delta nailed it, and then some, in terms of woodwork, finish, design, technical specs – everything.’

The 65.5 metre Invictus , launched in 2013, is certainly one of the most significant new launches in North America in recent times. At first glance, you can sense she is a large yacht, but her incredible volume of 1,945 gross tonnes is well disguised in her classic, elegant lines. Even armed with the knowledge of just how much interior space she offers, nothing prepares you for the sheer scale of her social areas. I’m not talking straight floor area here, although she certainly doesn’t fall short on that count, but in the main deck aft saloon, for example, the deckheads rise into coffers producing an incredible nine feet (2.7 metres) of headroom. The extraordinary airiness this creates, combined with giant floor-to-ceiling windows, means that Invictus ' saloon area, with its sofas, seating areas, fireplace, piano and bar, feels both homey and unrestrained. The décor has room to breathe, and while the finish shows great depth and intricacy, it never becomes overwhelming.

The reason for the towering headroom has to do with the genesis of the project. Begun as a hull with expedition intent, the original lines included a helicopter hangar on the main deck. When the project evolved into what it is now, complete with a slight stretching in the overall length of the Ice-Classed hull, the height of the space created by that hangar was kept and translated into the impressive headroom the yacht offers today. ‘It went from a yacht that was conceived around a helicopter to a yacht that didn’t really need or care about a helicopter,’ says Christian Oliver, a senior designer in Delta’s design department.

‘We had a significant amount of deck-to-deck space to work with between the main deck and the owner’s deck that allowed great expanses of headroom and still left plenty of room to run our systems,’ adds Jay Miner, chief naval architect at Delta. ‘We had more of a challenge on the level below the main deck because that’s where we were paying that price. In the tender bay we had to work hard to get the headroom in there and get the gantries mounted and the tenders and the hull doors in, so that was one region of intensive engineering.’ The tender bay holds both a Novurania Chase 27 sports boat and a custom-built Comitti 8.5 metre tender crafted by a yard based on Lake Como.

Following the dramatic entrance to the saloon from the aft deck, the main deck continues forward with a full-tiered cinema where you might expect to find a formal dining area. ‘It’s got a 103-inch screen, and we put proper windows in there,’ says the owner. ‘So if you want, you can just go in there and cruise and read.’

The forward half Invictus ' of the main deck becomes the family wing for the owner’s children, when running in private mode. Six cabins, three on either side, offer plenty of space and large en suites, and each has a distinctive colour theme chosen by the children. Two further cabins are on the lower deck, while the master suite takes pride of place forward on the upper deck.

Here, a central corridor leads first to a panelled sitting room to starboard then on to his-and-hers en suites outboard on either side. Hers contains a large bath, while his offers a huge shower. Each has floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the elevated view, along with doors to the sidedecks to access the forward owner’s seating area. Gates aft on the side deck can be closed to indicate to crew that privacy is required.

The real wow factor on Invictus , though, is reserved for the forward sleeping area, surrounded by near full-height windows that offer a stunning panorama even from the bed. Windows throughout the yacht are built as close to the deck and as wide as possible. ‘That was always the design intent,’ the owner explains. ‘We wanted to maximise views whenever possible. Even in the cabins on the lower deck the oval windows are huge.’

The aft part of the upper deck is an ample formal dining area with two snug seating areas forward on either side. ‘We travel with a lot of friends, so Delta built us an amazing table that could seat 22,’ says the owner of Invictus . ‘We designed the area so you can have a cocktail and relax before stepping to the table. And when the kids want to break off and watch TV and we want to sit and talk or have a drink, we’re not separated. That’s why we made sure we had a bar at every level – you’ve got to be prepared.’ For the dining service, pantries with dedicated china are on every level, ready to receive dishes from the industrial-standard galley located on the lower deck.

The bridge is pushed to the top deck, giving captain and crew a commanding view, while aft is an outboard gym to port with doors that open to the fresh air. Farthest aft is a bar and saloon that, with matte black and plush red décor, feel like they have been lifted from a Parisian nightclub. ‘This has become one of the more popular spaces,’ the owner of Invictus says. ‘It’s a big bar where you can lounge and relax, and a TV comes up from the cabinet. The detail in the metalwork and ceiling, and the backlit bar, are incredible. Delta did an unbelievable job. Our designer Diane Johnson is great with details and making rooms very accommodating.’

Not surprisingly, exterior spaces are equally remarkable. Invictus' huge sundeck – built of carbon fibre to save weight aloft – includes an aft spa pool, a bar under the arch, sunbeds, big awnings, a large dining table and loose seating and furniture. ‘The space up top is so important. We were careful to make the most of it,’ notes the owner.

Apart from a large circular dining table on the bridge aft deck, nearly all the deck furniture is freestanding. ‘The yacht was intended to be more like a great home, a great apartment that you would find in London or Manhattan,’ notes the owner. Furniture that’s not built-in felt more like home to us.’

The concept of Invictus was based on the owner’s experience with his previous boat, a 45M Bennetti. ‘We travel with a lot of people, have a big family, and enjoy entertaining, so we wanted spaces that are comfortable and fun, where you can relax and it still feels like a home even though it’s a big boat.

‘We are all very proud of her. It’s been a great effort,’ says the owner as we finish our tour. ‘You know, there are a lot of great yachts out there, but this stands above them all. I’m a little biased probably, but I think it’s true!’

About Bay & Delta Yachtsman

Bay & Delta Yachtsman’s humble beginnings date back to over 45 years ago when a Delta boating couple created a newsletter with information for other boaters in the area – a breezy little publication in which boaters could share ideas and find out what was happening around the waterways of Northern California.

delta victor yacht bay harbor owner

It took off like a speedboat, quickly evolving into a large-format magazine printed on newsprint. Later it was graced with a four-color cover, and still later this cover was printed on glossy stock. Yes, this was a boating magazine that looked right at home on the coffee table of any posh yacht or comfortable houseboat.

The evolution continued. Today Bay & Delta Yachtsman is printed on fine glossy stock. Thanks to the very latest in computers, digital photos, and other production equipment, Yachtsman is able to go to the printer on very tight deadlines that allow us to very often provide readers with late-breaking news. If it’s happening in Northern California boating, you can be sure you’ll read about it in Yachtsman.

Because our writers and editors live and breathe the Northern California boating scene – and have been doing so for more than a couple of years – you can expect them to put their knowledgeable spin on the news. You not only get the news, but you also learn how it will affect you.

Our writers try to handle news with a lighthearted touch when possible. Although boating is their way of life, they can see the humor in it. This good humor is reflected in the sensibility of the Bay & Delta Yachtsman reader.

Our readers are a progressive bunch; they know what they want, and they are not afraid to tell us. As far as they are concerned, Bay & Delta Yachtsman is their magazine, their voice of boating. They communicate with us by telephone, via the fax machine, Uncle Sam’s mail system, and by e-Mail. Our Letters to the Editor section is growing, and it reflects easy give and take between our readers and writers.

We will continue to strive mightily to maintain that friendly feeling of a close-knit boating community, while at the same time committing ourselves to change and grow. Our readers expect a lot from us, and we plan to continue to deliver it to them. They are the best, and they deserve the best. Now you can watch us grow on the web, or better yet, climb aboard and grow right along with us.
