StingraySailing

Cayman's favorite stingray friendly, stingray city tour.

StingraySailing Catamaran

Avoid the crowds for a better experience at Stingray City.

20 passenger max

Our trips are done on the sailing catamaran the Far Tortuga. The Far Tortuga is forty-three feet long and twenty feet wide.  With trips with a maximum of twenty people, there is always lots of room aboard. Instead of sitting on a bench rubbing shoulders with the person next to you, we give you space to lay out in the sun to work on your tan. Under power or under sail, it is always a smooth ride on the Far-Tortuga.

How About a Private Charter?

A private charter allows you to make to most of your time on the water. You can customize your tour to suit your group's needs. Request an early departure to beat the crowds, or a later departure to enjoy a peaceful afternoon or sunset. Whatever your needs, a private charter allows you to achieve them. Able to accommodate up to 25 guests

Contact us for Charter prices and get the boat for yourselves.

Be a Part of our Group Tour

We are back in action and pleased to be offering our full range of services once again. We have reduced the number of guests on our group tours to further improve our ability to offer our guests a more personalized and memorable experience. Our Group tours typically spend three hours on the water and include two stops. One stop is to play with our friendly stingrays at the SandBar and another stop at the reef for snorkeling. We provide food to feed the stingrays and Masks for snorkeling.

Catering to Both Guests arriving by Cruise ship and those staying on the island.

$85 Per person. Limit of 20 passengers per trip

Daily Schedule

Our schedule varies from day to day based on the time of year and the schedule of the ships that are in port. We typically offer a morning and afternoon trip and will modify the timing of these to either accommodate guests from the ships or to avoid the ship crowds to create a better experience for our on-island guests. Let us know when you are available and we will match you up with the tour that best suits your needs.

Satisfaction Guaranteed

We have built our reputation around the idea of staying in balance with nature. Many of the bigger operators at Stingray city depend on catching stingrays to show one to their guests. We find that if you treat them nicely and just sit back, they will come to you. This often results in us having more rays than the competition and other operators coming to our boat to kidnap rays when they can not find any for themselves.

Sounds like a bold claim to make? Come and see for yourself.

Stingray City

Local legend has it that the stingrays began gathering in the area decades ago when fisherman would return from an excursion and go behind a reef into the sound and clean their fish in the calm water of the shallows and sand bar area. The fish guts were simply thrown overboard and the stingrays eventually congregated to feast on the discarded guts. Soon the stingrays began to associate the sound of a boat engine with a free meal.

ABOUT STINGRAY CITY

If you're searching for a unique and exhilarating experience when visiting Grand Cayman, Stingray City is a must-see. It's a wide sandbar surrounded by barrier reefs that's home to a variety of fish and, most notably, stingrays. The fact that the southern stingrays that inhabit the area are exceedingly friendly makes Stingray City the most popular activity on the island. These massive sea creatures are so accustomed to human interaction that they allow people to feed, play with, pet, and photograph them. It's a Caribbean adventure unlike any other! Stingray City is a 25-minute boat journey from the beach and a fantastic destination for families, couples, and lone visitors. Head to the sandbar, where the shallow water only reaches 3-4 feet, for a more relaxed experience. You can have as much fun as you want with the stingrays here. You can also try one of the Turtle Center's snorkel tours if you want a more exhilarating experience. Any of our Stingray City Tours can be supplemented with visits to Starfish Point, Coral Garden, and the Turtle Center.

It's easy to see why visitors come to Grand Cayman's Stingray City, which boasts crystal clear water and one of the most close encounters you'll ever have with wild stingrays. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you won't want to pass up while on vacation in the Cayman Islands. Take part in the fun by booking one of our Stingray City Tours. 1. George’s Watersports – 4-Stop Stingray Eco Tour

grand cayman catamaran stingray city

George’s Watersports offers a unique 4-stop stingray eco tour that goes to the following four spots, all in one tour:

– Stingray City Sandbar – Snorkeling at the Barrier Reef – Starfish Point – Mangrove Forest

This tour is great because you experience Stingray City, but also so much more. This is a must do tour whilst vacationing in Grand Cayman! This tour takes small groups, allowing for a less crowded experience.

Below is a video showing this 4-stop stingray eco tour:

2. George’s Watersports – Private Stingray City Tour

image of boat at Stingray City from the air

This private 4-stop stingray tour goes to the following spots:

This is basically the same as the “ 4-stop stingray eco tour ” mentioned above, except this is a private charter, meaning that you have the entire boat to yourself.

The type of boat is also different, as this charter uses a 29-foot center console boat with twin-200hp outboard engines. This boat can hold up to 10 guests.

Below is a video showing this private 4-stop Stingray City tour:

3. Captain Marvin’s – 2-Stop Stingray & Snorkel Tour

picture of stingrays underwater

This tour has two stops: Stingray City sandbar and one snorkel spot (either Coral Gardens or the Barrier Reef).

The positive aspect of this tour is that it is slightly cheaper than other similar tours. However, group sizes can be relatively large with the potential for crowds.

4. Moby Dick Tours – Stingray & Snorkel Tour

Picture of man holding a stingray

This tour is similar to number three above. It is two stops, going to both Stingray City sandbar and then snorkeling at the Barrier Reef.

This tour is usually occupied with cruise ship passengers, meaning that it is more likely to be crowded compared to other companies that take smaller groups. However, this tour could be a good choice if you are visiting Grand Cayman on a cruise as it will likely depart at a time that is receptive to cruise schedules.

5. Frank’s Watersports – Stingray City Tour

image of women holding a stingray

Frank’s Watersports offers a 2.5 hour long Stingray City tour.

This tour can accommodate both cruise ship and hotel guests. This company has been operating for over 40 years, so they have a lot of experience in the industry.

6. Anchor Tours – Stingray & Snorkel

picture of boat

Anchor Tours is a company in Grand Cayman that offers Stingray City tours.

This company has a larger boat and takes larger groups.

7. Ebanks Watersports – Jet Ski Stingray & Snorkel Tour

Picture of people and jet skis at Stingray City sandbar

This 2.5 hour tour is designed for people who like adventure. You take a jet ski to Stingray City sandbar and also to the Barrier Reef to snorkel.

This tour has a much higher chance of cancellation if the weather is rough, compared to regular Stingray City tours that operate on larger boats. Also, if you have back problems, then this tour is not a good idea.

8. Get Bent Charters – Private Stingray Tour

picture of boats at Stingray City sandbar

“Get Bent Charters” offers private Stingray City tours.

They can accommodate up to 12 guests on their boat. Typical length of their charters are between 4 to 6 hours. You can also add snorkeling to this trip.

9. Fat Fish Adventures – Jet Ski Stingray, Snorkel & Mangrove Tour

picture of a jet ski on a beach

Fat Fish Adventures offers this three stop tour that goes to Stingray City sandbar, snorkeling at the Barrier Reef, and the mangroves.

This is a great excursion for thrill seekers, but this tour is not recommended for people that have back issues or disabilities. Also, there is a much higher chance of cancellation since this tour operates with jet skis, which cannot handle rough waves, meaning that if it is too windy (too rough), then the tour will be cancelled.

10. Nick’s Private Charter – Stingray & Snorkel Tour

picture of people on a boat

Nick’s Private Charter offers private trips to Stingray City.

This is a good company for smaller groups that want a more private experience away from the crowds.

11. Happy Day Charters – Private Stingray City Tour

picture of boat

Happy Day Charters specialises in offering private tours to Stingray City in Grand Cayman.

Their boat is about 30 feet in length, which is perfect for groups of 5 to 8 people. Since they offer private tours, you can customise your experience, by adding other stops to the trip such as snorkeling or Starfish Point.

12. Red Sail Sports – Catamaran Stingray Tour

catamaran boat at Stingray City

Red Sail Sports offers a unique tour that goes to Stingray City sandbar using a “ catamaran ” sail boat.

Catamarans are very spacious, however, they are quite slow, so you end up spending more time getting to the destination, than actually being at the destination.

This tour takes about 40 people per trip, so it isn’t the best option for people that are looking for a small group excursion.

13. Cayman Turtle Divers – Dive At “Deep” Stingray City

woman scuba diving with stingray

Technically there are two different Stingray Cities.

There is the regular “Stingray City sandbar”, which is the main location that 99% of people go to. This is a shallow sandbar in the sea which you can stand at, since the water is only 2 to 3 feet deep.

Then there is the “Deep Stingray City”, which is about a mile away from the sandbar, and is about 12 feet in depth, meaning that you cannot stand there. Cayman Turtle Divers does a scuba diving tour to the “Deep Stingray City”. You can feed and dive with the stingrays underwater. This adventure is only for people who are certified scuba divers. If you want to simply snorkel, then it’s better to book a regular “Stingray City sandbar” tour, as most of those tours include a snorkel stop at the Barrier Reef.

14. Rowan Watersports – Private Stingray City Trip

picture of boat in sea

Rowan Watersports has a large 45-foot boat that you can rent to Stingray City.

Their crew is experienced and professional. This company is a good choice for largers groups who want to avoid the crowds.

15. The Sweet Spot – Guided Jet Ski Stingray Tour

two people on a jet ski at Stingray City

“The Sweet Spot” is a tour company that operates from the Kaibo area in Grand Cayman. If you are a tourist staying on the East side of Grand Cayman, then this may be a more convenient location for you (compared to driving to the west side of the island).

This tour takes you to both Stingray City sandbar and snorkeling at the Barrier Reef, via jet ski. This is a guided tour, meaning that you will have an experienced tour guide to lead you throughout.

This tour is not recommended for people with back problems or disabilities.

How much does it cost to go to Stingray City in Grand Cayman?

The cost can vary between $100 USD per person to $150 USD per person. It depends on the tour company that you go with, and what type of tour you do.

Is Stingray City suitable for kids?

Stingray City is fine for kids that are 3 years or older. If you have kids that are under 3 years, then it is probably too hot and rough for them.

How many people go to Stingray City a day?

It depends on the time of year. In the busy months, there can be over two-thousand people going to Stingray City in a single day. In the slower months, it may only be a few hundred people each day.

Final Thoughts

There are many companies that you can choose to go to Stingray City with.

All of the companies on this list are great choices, but the best overall experience is the “ 4-stop stingray eco tour ” by “ George’s Watersports “. This 4-stop stingray eco tour shows you the best parts of Grand Cayman, all in a single tour, giving you more value for your money.

A Visitor’s Guide to Grand Cayman’s Stingray City

Picture yourself as a tropical dancer: twirling on your tiptoes in the aquamarine tide, sashaying across glittering white sand, basking in the golden sunlight. Your stage is a place called Stingray City.

And, you’ve got a dancing partner, too. Elegant and graceful as a butterfly, mysteriously gliding through crystal waters and a colorful reef. But, it isn’t a human or even a mermaid. You’re two-stepping with a stingray.

Where is Stingray City?

image of Stingray City

Fortunately, Stingray City isn’t an apparition like Atlantis or Emerald City. It’s a real place, bobbing in the Caribbean, offshore from Grand Cayman. And it’s definitely not a beach! It’s a sandbar and diving hotspot in the Cayman Islands.

But, where is  Stingray City in Cayman Island ? Find it with quintessential island flair: first step, land on Grand Cayman. Second, charter a boat from Rum Point. Third, drift 2 miles out into the Caribbean sea. Fourth, dunk yourself into the North Sound.

Stingray City’s History

Stingray City in the Cayman Islands began as a simple sandbar where fishermen cleaned their catch, inadvertently feeding local Southern Atlantic Stingrays. Over time, these stingrays grew accustomed to human presence, associating boats with food. This unique interaction between fishermen and stingrays set the stage for what would become Stingray City.

As its fame grew, it transformed into a popular tourist attraction by the 1980s. Visitors now flock to swim, feed, and interact with the friendly stingrays, making Stingray City a symbol of harmonious coexistence between humans and marine life, as well as a beacon of sustainable tourism in the Caribbean.

Stingray Ray City & Stingray Sandbar

Grand Cayman’s legendary Stingray City is made of two parts: 1. Stingray City Valley of the Rays and 2. Stingray Sandbar. Both are within a shallow protected keyhole bay called North Sound, located off Grand Cayman’s north coastline.

It’s a dreamy, wild destination where stingrays bide their time with the ocean-loving humankind. The calm, clear, warm, shallow waters make it prime pickings for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. And, it’s also the legendary Grand Cayman hub where stingray encounters abound.

Valley of the Rays

The first, Stingray City, also called Valley of the Rays, is the better destination for those who want to dip their noses below the surface. It’s an area of the North Sound suitable for snorkeling, diving, and anchoring a dive boat or catamaran. The main draw is the opportunity to swim and interact with a large population of local stingrays in deeper water, up to about 12 feet in depth.

Stingray Sandbar

The latter, Stingray Sandbar, holds greater appeal for the masses, particularly those who aren’t strong ocean swimmers, who don’t crave the snorkeling or diving experience, or who simply prefer to keep their toes firmly planted in the sand. Here, the friendly ocean giants love to be pet and handfed in shallow waters (3 to 5 feet deep).

They are also known for rubbing against your legs, much like a puppy does.

The stingrays are not captive and come and go as they please. It’s important to understand they are definitely wild but are somewhat domesticated, as they have been interacting with tourists in such a way for decades.

How to get to Stingray City

Stingray City Valley of the Rays and Stingray Sandbar are both located offshore, in the North Sound Harbor of Grand Cayman. This protected area is within the Barrier Reef and is much too far offshore to reach via swimming or kayaking on your own. Plus, you need special permits to enter this section of the sea. It’s only accessible by boat and is reached via guided tours.

The boat ride out to the sandbar takes about 25 minutes, and usually includes stops at other key points in the North Sound like Rum Point and Starfish Point. The tours provide history lessons, ecological insights, animal intel, safety guidance, plus any supplies you might need like snorkel gear and fish to feed the rays. The full excursion can last from 1.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on what you choose.

Best time to visit

There are numerous departure times offered by a multitude of tour companies, so it’s fairly easy to grab a boat at any time of the day to visit Stingray City. And the stingrays are always present, friendly, and snack-ready. But, it’s still necessary to make a reservation and to consider a few factors to ensure you find the best time to visit Stingray City.

One of the best tips is to book an evening tour, especially on the weekends. Stingray City is one of the biggest tourist attractions on Grand Cayman, and midday during the week can be quite bustling. These are the most common times for cruise tours to frequent the area.

So, if you’d prefer a little more space, quiet, and one on one time with the rays, choose a less popular tour time at the close of the day and on a Saturday or Sunday.

The Catamaran will take you snorkeling in the beautiful Cayman waters or visiting our beautiful Barrier Reef or Coral Gardens following the Stingray interaction.   The Coral Reef formation offers vibrant Coral, Sponges, a multitude of Tropical Fish of all species, Eels, and the occasional turtle.

The Barrier Reef will show you the most pristine coral, tropical fish, and marine creatures in the protected, calm, shallow waters of Grand Cayman.

Grand Cayman's East End is known for its dramatic landscapes, and none is more famous than the area's famous blowholes . Located on the southeastern coast, this area is characterized by its rugged natural beauty. This region also sees fewer tourists, as many visitors to Grand Cayman tend to stay on the west side of the island. In the East End, visitors can witness the magnificent blowholes in the area as seawater forces its way through natural rock formations. These ancient caves offer a unique opportunity to explore vast stalagmites and crystal-clear pools. When budgeting for a trip to the Cayman Islands , travelers must factor in a trip to these crystal caves.

Guided tours allow guests to discover the caves' geological wonders and historical significance. The island's earliest inhabitants sought shelter in these caves, which pirates also utilized as hideouts. Some legends say that buried treasure might still be hidden deep underground.

  • Cost: Around $45
