Hanse 675: Meet the New Uber Cruiser from Germany

Standing on the floating docks at October’s Annapolis Sailboat show next to the new Hanse 675 is a humbling experience. I had seen the top of the mast from across the show stretching high above all of the others around it, but that didn’t prepare me for the sight of this new design up close and personal.

The deck level was above my head and from stern to bow, the look was of a mega yacht instead of what one might consider a family cruiser. The flat sheer line, the broad transom, the slab hull sides and the large black windows combine to give the 675 an aura of hugeness.

The 657 joins a fleet of large, production-built cruisers that includes the Beneteau 62, Dufour 63 and Jeanneau 64. The semi-custom builders like Oyster build yachts of this size and much larger. At the production-boat level, these are massive boats for a couple to consider cruising. But as we keep witnessing, size matters and bigger is better.

In that contest, the new Hanse 675 is now the leader and with its size it also introduces some very cool refinements and innovations. Most noticeable is the carbon-fiber, hard-top Bimini over the cockcpit. Amel introduced a similar concept last year but the Hanse version seems to get it really right. The hard-top stretches aft to offer full protection to both helm positions. In the aft half there is a retractable shade that allows you can see the mainsail from the helms yet still be somewhat protected from sun and rain.

The next refinement that stands out is the dinghy garage built into the transom. This is an idea that has been around for a while, but once again, German engineering has got it right. A Williams 385 dinghy fits neatly on the sliding cradle and can be easily winched into its garage by one person.  It launches again just as easily.

The 675’smast stands 104 feet above the water. That’s 40 feet taller than the height restriction of the East Coast’s ICW, which is to say that the sail plan on this boat is massive. Hanse tends to make their rigs powerful and reliant on a huge mainsail and smaller 100-percent, self-tacking jib. Having sailed a Hanse 51 across the North Atlantic, I can attest that this rig configuration is fast, easy to handle and needs to be reefed early and often. The 675 has an in-boom furling system as an option and this will make life mush easier than struggling with a standard slab reefing system, particularly when you need to get the sail reduced to a third reef; this is something you will want to do more often than you might think.

The cockpit is huge and well laid out with the twin helms aft, a bench settee to port and a dinette that can seat up to eight to starboard. You can install a built-in grill right next to the starboard helm, too. The hard top offers protection from above and a dodger over the companionway can protect the cockpit from spray and wind. It looks like the whole cockpit can be enclosed with Isinglass panels.

Down below Hanse offers several arrangement plans to suit the various needs of owners. The master stateroom forward can have either a centerline double with a separate head and shower layout, or you can have and angled double and a larger head-shower combo.  Just aft you can have two large sleeping cabins or you can convert the port cabin into an office. With three cabins forward of the saloon, those onboard as owners or guests will have plenty of privacy.

The saloon is vast and has a ton of headroom.  To starboard there is the aft head, the aft-facing chart table and a large L-shaped sofa and coffee table. The TV is built in over the chart table so you can recline on the sofa to watch movies or your favorite shows.

There is one quarter cabin aft on the starboard side that can be configured with a double berth or upper and lower singles. The huge galley is to port in the area usually occupied by a quarter cabin. Instead you have a galley that can be closed off from the saloon. This is a proper kitchen that will make all of the cooks on board happy.

The way the after quarter cabin and galley are set up, and joined by a door, is an excellent arrangement for a captain and cook who could have their own space and tend to chores in the galley out of the way of the owner’s party or a charter party.

The fit and finish of the new generation of Hanses maintains the builder’s modern Euro-styling with wide open spaces, the light-colored bulkheads and large windows. The interior is modern, clean and has just a hint of tradition that many sailors like. Hand holds are a bit scarce in the expanse of the saloon.

At about $1.3 million, the Hanse 675 is not for every family. There are smaller versions that fill that need. But for qualified owners who want a luxurious, spacious yacht, with room for family, guests and a crew, the new design is the new Uber yacht in the marina.

The sailing yacht Hanse 675 has been produced since 2015 and has the international CE (A) certification, which allows sailing on the high seas. The length of the fiberglass hull is 21.1 meters, the width is 5.9 meters, and the draft is 3.1 meters. The model is equipped with fourteen seats and six berths for passengers.

The cockpit of the vessel is equipped with a hard roof that protects it from the sun. Under it there are two sofas for several people with built-in lockers, compact folding tables and a refrigerator. Behind them there is a captain's post equipped with an electronic control panel and two chairs. At the stern of the vessel, there is a retractable platform with a removable ladder for access to the water, metal handrails and a tow bar. Through the walkways fenced with railings along the sides, you can enter the Hanse 675 bow platform, equipped with two sun loungers.

The main cabin of the yacht includes two corner sofas with dining and coffee tables, a control panel with electronic displays, a TV, and a galley with oven and electric ovens, sink, refrigerator and several drawers for food / dishes. In the bow and stern of the vessel there are spacious sleeping cabins equipped with double beds, compact sofas, wardrobes, drawers for personal belongings and separate rooms with bathrooms and showers.

The total sail area of the model is 244.5 m². A stationary 150 hp engine is installed on it. The fuel tank holds 1,100 liters, the fresh water tank 900 liters.

The new Hanse 675

The new flagship of the HanseYachtsAG, floats rigged and ready to sail in the port of Greifswald.

The 32 meter carbon mast reaches into the sky and gives the Hanse 675 her last touch, creating a 21-meter-long high-tech luxury yacht. The Hanse 675 not only breaks the record as the biggest ship ever built by the HanseYachts AG, she is also Germany’s largest yacht build in series production.

“With emotion and high-tech, our new queen of the seas embodies the Hanse design philosophy of sensual clarity and modern luxury, an even more avant-garde interior and with fluid exterior lines, a milestone in series yacht building” says Dr. Jens Gerhardt, CEO of HanseYachts AG.

As all Hanse yachts, the Hanse 675 was developed by judel/vrolijk& co. With clear shapes, smooth surfaces and the typical uncluttered deck layout she conveys corresponding sportiness. The elongated teak fore deck as well as the flowing rooflines provide the perfect place to enjoy the sun.

“Life at sea implies light, air, water and distance. We have transferred these attributes to the interior of the yacht, creating a spacious and bright interior, resembling the elegance of marine life”, says Interior Designer JörgHeuser.

Large windows in the hull and a long panoramic roof with an electrically openable section on deck contribute to the elegant appearance and give an idea of how the sunlight floods the interior. The optional hardtop with integrated speakers and spot lights provides shade and can be opened while sailing.

The multimedia package of the Hanse 675 also impresses. The cockpit has three 21 inch screens, which can be used either as plotters or for entertainment purposes.

“Based on examples and solutions, as they can only be found in nature, we created a world that will amaze the viewer with its many highlights.” Soft curves and smooth transitions of various fabrics, such as hand-made leather to panels of fine wood, create a hand-flattering atmosphere, which is rarely seen in a series yacht.

In the owner’s cabin, the centerpiece of any luxury yacht, a wave shape design has been implemented to use the available space in the best possible way. Artfully mounted shelves and sideboards make the impression, “to float in the air”.

The spacious salon offers a cozy atmosphere and invites guests with its unique design to be carried away by the artistic shapes. The card table is provided with a large screen and can be used as a comfortable office at sea. The coffee bar is lovingly encased in the side wall and supports the stylish ambience. A wine cooler is also included in the interior and ensures the optimum temperature.

In the various bathrooms, the structure, optimized by evolutionary processes, continues. Round showers not only look attractive, they simultaneously create more space and therefore more comfort. At the same time, HanseYachts has combined high quality building materials such as stainless steel and fine wood veneers with neatly accentuated lighting architecture. Another highlight in the bathroom is the genuine stone, which has been installed the first time in a Hanse.

An additional feature is the unique layout, which provides the owner and his guests the highest level of privacy. The crew has a separate entry on the port side of the cockpit that leads both into the kitchen area as well as to the spacious crew cabin for up to three, with an adjacent wet room. The kitchen and utility area are separated from the living area, allowing the guests to relax undisturbed.

Hanse Yachts has issued a powerful statement of intent with the launch of the new Hanse 675, which it terms as a ‘mini superyacht’.

The yacht will feature vinylester sandwich construction with the main bulkhead laminated to the deck and hull for rigidity. She will retain Hanse’s trademark self-tacking headsail which, married to her cockpit set up with all lines running back to the helmsman, should make her simple to sail short-handed.

This Judel/Vrolijk design is bang up to date and features a full electric sunroof over the saloon, which in turn features very modern ‘loft style’ decor. In common with recent Hanses, the saloon will also be incredibly light and airy, with no fewer than 24 separate portlights and skylights. There will also be a number of interior options including the possibility of an unusual aft galley. There is a separate crew companionway to keep the crew quarters self-contained from the owner’s.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
